Diego Dolcini to Unveil Crystal-Heeled Baccarat Shoe Capsule

CRYSTAL VISIONS: Crystal slippers are no longer limited to fairy tales. Celebrating 25 years of heels, Diego Dolcini has collaborated with Baccarat on a limited-edition capsule of 15 footwear designs sporting crystal heels — a “first in the history of shoemaking,” according to the footwear designer.
Dubbed Cristal Couture, the capsule is also designed in signature Baccarat colors: ruby, amber, amethyst and black.
Dolcini named a ruby satin sandal with a torsade-shaped crystal heel echoing Baccarat’s Zenith chandelier after French singer Lou Doillon, dedicating the collection to “iconic French women of today and of the future.” (Think Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve and Mélanie Laurent, “to name but a few.”)
Hailing a “new chapter” for Baccarat, Daniela Riccardi, chief executive officer of the crystal house, in a statement said the team has been mulling “the idea of bringing Baccarat into the world of couture, catwalks and fashion shows” for some time.
The house will present a retrospective of Dolcini’s footwear oeuvre in the Salle de Bal at the Baccarat headquarters on Place des États-Unis during Paris Couture Week, with a cocktail scheduled for July 1.
The Italian designer has headed the footwear departments of brands including Gucci, under former creative director Tom Ford, Pucci, Dolce &

Diego Della Valle Not Stepping Aside

NOT SO FAST: Diego Della Valle is not relinquishing any role within the Tod’s Group. Asked to comment on a Reuters report on Tuesday, following a Tod’s investor day and based on two sources speculating the chairman and chief executive officer is “reviewing his role” with plans to “step aside,” a spokesperson for the Italian luxury group refuted this. “Nobody knows when and if this will happen. Mr. Della Valle said that when the management will be in place, when the time will be right, when it will be opportune, one day” he may consider this, explained the spokesperson.
As reported, on Monday Tod’s announced a 4.7 percent decrease in sales to 722.2 million euros in the first nine months of the year and the appointment of a new managing director, Umberto Macchi di Cellere, who will succeed longtime coceo Stefano Sincini.
While the spokeswoman said no financial targets were given to the investors, Della Valle stated on Monday that “for the current year, we are confident to deliver results in line with market expectations.” The 2017 consensus pegs revenues at 981 million euros with an EBITDA margin of 17 percent.
Tod’s shares closed down 3.89 percent at 54.40 euros on Tuesday on

Varvatos Opens Store in San Diego

John Varvatos has chosen Southern California for the site of its latest store. The 3,500-square-foot store at the Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego marks the company’s 23rd store.
“With its cool and laid-back attitude, San Diego is the perfect location for a John Varvatos store,” said designer John Varvatos. “The John Varvatos brand and aesthetic is very much in tune with the Southern California lifestyle, while offering a very strong and distinct masculine point of view — something that is unique in the area.”

Celebrate Love and Equality at Pride Music Festival in San Diego

2015-07-02-1435876581-6502834-Pride.jpg

The art of change is one that occurs slowly, its early brushstrokes seemingly unclear except to the eyes of its believers. As the painting becomes more complete, a vision begins to materialize, a vision that many saw all along. When true change finally occurs, a masterpiece is unveiled. The United States of America has seen many changes over the past decade, but one of the most colorfully celebrated is the 2015 Supreme Court ruling that made same-sex marriage a constitutional right (which it always has been) nationwide.

Pride celebrations began long before this ruling and will continue on long after. However, the timing is impeccable as the pride celebrations are just a little more special this time around. San Diego Pride is proud to present Pride Music Festival, the San Diego region’s biggest and most grandiose music festival celebrating diversity and equality. This epic event will unite over 40,000 people over two days from across the nation to celebrate, rejoice, dance, and of course, share love.

In addition to being a massive city-wide party, this event also supports dozens of charitable organizations and has raised and donated over $ 2 million over the years. The surrounding neighborhoods as well as the city and county of San Diego have long supported Pride Music Festival because of its respectful and excellent reputation for safety. Among many other things, Pride Music Festival will feature an open-air art gallery, food trucks, craft beers, spirits and more than 200 exhibitor and vendor booths. There is also a VIP section available which offers a VIP entrance, restrooms, catered food, and four hosted drinks each day.

Providing the pulse of Pride Music Festival will be five electronic and live music stages sprinkled amid the lush greenery of San Diego’s Balboa Park during the weekend of July 18th-19th. The recently unveiled lineup includes current dance, pop, hip-hop, Latin and many other genres of music such as Emma Hewitt, Late Night Alumni, Mary Lambert, Ruby Rose, Pierce Fulton and Taryn Manning, just to name a few. Even Carmen Electra will be showing her support by hosting the mainstage on day 1, keeping attendees rallied.

The 2015 theme is “Liberty and Justice For All,” a true call-to-action for equality not just in the U.S., but globally. “It’s a memorable experience to unite with thousands of people, taking pride in who you are and celebrating each other,” said executive director Stephen Whitburn. “Pride Music Festival is for everyone.”

Music festivals are currently one of the strongest uniting forces in popular culture. Combining the unity of a music festival and the power of the Pride movement creates a unique and unforgettable experience that will keep this event alive for years to come. Pride Music Festival 2015 will not only be an epic party, but a beautiful moment in history shared even by those who cannot attend. It will represent a time when the voices of millions were finally heard, where full acceptance and equality are not just possible but necessary, and when an entire nation finally shares this same freedom. Under the warm San Diego sun, humans will dance and celebrate together united beneath the banner of love.

Diego Rivera: Murals for the Museum of Modern Art

Diego Rivera: Murals for the Museum of Modern Art

In 1931, Diego Rivera was the subject of The Museum of Modern Art’s second monographic exhibition, which set new attendance records in its five-week run. The Museum brought Rivera to New York six weeks before the show’s opening and gave him on-site studio space. There he produced five “portable murals” -large blocks of frescoed plaster, slaked lime and wood that feature bold images drawn from Mexican subject matter and address themes of revolution and class inequity. After the opening, to great publicity, Rivera added three more murals, now taking on New York subjects through monumental images of the urban working class and the city during the Great Depression. Published in conjunction with an exhibition that brings together key works made for Rivera’s 1931 show, this catalogue casts the artist as a highly cosmopolitan figure who traveled between Russia, Mexico and the United States and examines the intersection of artmaking and radical politics in the 1930s. Illustrated with reproductions of each panel as well as related paintings, drawings, prints and documentary photographs, the book’s essays investigate the international politics of muralism, Rivera’s history with MoMA, the iconography of the portable murals and technical aspects of the artist’s working process. Diego Rivera (1886-1957) was a central figure in the development of Mexican muralism, an ambitious public art initiative intended to relay Mexico’s ideals after the Revolution (1910-1920). A highly cosmopolitan artist, Rivera had spent many years in Europe before returning to Mexico in 1921, and in 1927 he traveled to the Soviet Union where he met Alfred Barr, the soon-to-be founding director of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Rivera’s artistic celebrity benefitted from major commissions in the United States, including murals for the Pacific Stock Exchange, the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, MoMA and the Detroit Institute of Arts. By the 1930s, he enjoyed an unrivaled status at the

San Diego Noir

When it’s done right, noir is a darkly delicious thrill: smart, sharp-tongued, surprising. The knife goes in at the end with a twist. San Diego Noir, a new 15-story collection by some of the region’s best writers, has all that going for it, and the steady supply of hometown references makes it even more fun.”-San Diego Union-TribuneBrand-new stories by: T. Jefferson Parker, Jeffrey J. Mariotte, Martha Lawrence, Diane Clark & Astrid Bear, Debra Ginsberg, Morgan Hunt, Ken Kuhlken, Taffy Cannon, Don Winslow, Cameron Pierce Hughes, Lisa Brackmann, Gabriel R. Barillas, Gar Anthony Haywood, and Maria Lima. Launched with the summer ’04 award-winning best seller Brooklyn Noir, Akashic Books continues its groundbreaking series of original noir anthologies. Each book is comprised of all-new stories, each one set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the city of the book. San Diego is home to miles of beaches, Balboa Park, a world-famous zoo, and some of the country’s most expensive home and resort real estate. Yet the city also houses a few items that aren’t actively promoted by the visitor’s bureau: a number of the country’s most corrupt politicians, border-related crimes, terrorists, and the occasional earthquakes. A noir feast! In the 50-plus years since Raymond Chandler set Playback in Esmeralda, his name for La Jolla, the population has grown by more than a million, and crime has proliferated as well. San Diego of the past and the present offers the book’s contributors a rich selection of settings, from the cross on Mount Soledad to the piers of Ocean Beach, and perpetrators and victims from the residents of its wealthiest enclaves to the inhabitants of its segregated barrios.

Better, Stronger, Faster: San Diego Comic Con, 2014

In 1995 I made my first trip to Comic Con (at the time there seemed to be but one), and I was quite excited, not sure what to expect, and my thought going into the ginormous San Diego Convention Center was: “I’m an adult; what if somebody sees me?” That concern lasted about three seconds. We bought our tickets at the door (imagine that, way back in the 20th century), and immediately we were treated to — I’m just gonna go for it — the biggest, happiest gathering of creative and imaginative souls on this planet.

Will Eisner was just walking around, talking with people. Matt Groening was drawing Bongo over and over again. There were Boba Fetts. There were Wonder Women. I kept wanting to buy everything. It was amazing.

I loved it. I still love it. About a hundred and thirty thousand people join me in loving it (and that’s just in the notorious Hall ‘H’).

If you want to go to dinner sometime, I can blather about this event — this phenomenon! this institution! — from soup to nuts. But for ease of handling, here I simply present a few pix — the photographic equivalent of 20,000 words — with a dash of commentary. I didn’t chase the celebs — plenty of people did that, and did it well — and you know: astonishing things are headed your way from Middle Earth, and Gotham City, and the Pacific Rim, and wherever Mad Max lives. These are just some phone snaps I took as I ran around, loving life. May you know this feeling.
