Padma Lakshmi Supported Lena Dunham Prior to Her Hysterectomy: ‘I Recommended the Doctor’

Padma Lakshmi revealed she was a confidant to her friend Lena Dunham as the actress battled endometriosis and ultimately underwent a hysterectomy.

“I knew a lot about it before that article came out,” said Lakshmi, 47, who co-founded the Endometriosis Foundation of America after struggling from the disease herself. “I was on the phone with her, you know, when it happened I recommended the doctor that she did that with.”

When the Top Chef host saw Dunham, 31, struggle, she had to help.

“ somewhat part of the process from the beginning because I felt that Lena wasn’t getting the care that I felt she should have when I heard her talking about the doctors she was seeing before she got to my co-founder,” she says. “It’s a very personal thing. You don’t want to push your advice on someone, but I kept saying, I wonder is she should have a second opinion?’ I know you love your doctor and they sound great, but for comparison.”

She continued: “And went through a lot of trouble before she got to that point. She would tell you this herself, it was such an odyssey, and everything happened that could have happened. She had a lot of complications so, her case, like my case is a great example.”

Lakshmi, who has been an outspoken advocate for women’s health as well as for endometriosis, is hoping to bring more awareness to the causes close to her heart.

“You know, Lena and I have access to really great medical care, and for many, many millions of Americans, especially American women, that care is not available to them … and we need that as women.”

Lottery Winner with Cancer Dies Three Weeks After Finally Being Able to Afford Doctor

A winning lottery ticket worth a million dollars offered hope to one New York man, but the life-changing event would be short-lived as he lost his life to stage 4 cancer just three weeks later.

Donald Savastano, a self-employed carpenter living in upstate New York, struck it rich when he was driving home from work in early January and stopped at a convenience to purchase lottery tickets. The 51-year-old walked in and bought a Merry Millionaire ticket, and scratched it while on his way back to the car—revealing he had hit the $ 1 million grand prize.

“I couldn’t believe it!” Savastano told the New York Lottery in an announcement of his prize. “I brought it back in and scanned it under the ticket checker and knew it was a winner.”

Savastano decided to take the one-time lump sum payment, totaling $ 661,800 after withholdings. The winnings, he said, would allow him to build for the years to come.

“Being a self-employed carpenter, I didn’t really have a plan for retirement,” he said. “The money will help with that. I don’t have any other extravagant plans. I’ll buy a new truck, pay off some debt and invest for the future.”

One of those plans was finally going to the doctor for a check-up because he hadn’t been feeling well. But the visit resulted in terrifying news: Savastano had stage 4 metastatic cancer.

Danielle Scott, an employee at the store where the ticket was purchased, told ABC 7 that Savastano didn’t have insurance.

“He had a friend come and talk to me,” told ABC 7. “They told me that he was very sick and that he had brain and lung cancer and that he was in the hospital and they didn’t think he was gonna make it.”

Savastano died from the disease on January 26, just 23 days after purchasing his ticket.

“I was hoping that the money was maybe going to save his life,” Scott told the news station.

An obituary for Savastano he learned carpentry from his father as a child growing up on Long Island.

“He was known for his high-quality work and perfectionism,” the obituary reads. “He always tried to reach out and help those he could by teaching them ‘the right way to do things.’ “

Savastano lived with his girlfriend of 12 years, Julie Wheeler, and helped to raise her two sons. The family is asking for donations to be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory.

People Are Crushing On This Pakistani Doctor Who Needs A Room In New York City

Meet Rehan Munir. He’s a 26-year-old med school grad from Pakistan who also happens to be a model.

Here’s Munir in a TV commercial for Hush Puppies Pakistan.

Talk about a well-rounded guy, right?

Munir told HuffPost he hopes to do rotations in various hospitals across the U.S. to gain experience. He’s currently looking for housing in New York City, though ― a search he called “quite the ride.”

A post shared by Rehan Munir (@rehanmunir) on

Some of Munir’s New York-based friends recommended he post an ad on Gypsy Housing, a closed Facebook group for people looking for housing and roommates, so earlier this month, Munir did just that.

“I’m Rehan and I’m looking to rent a furnished room on the Upper East Side, Upper West Side or Midtown Manhattan,” the post read

“I’m professional, friendly and easy to live with,” he added. “Most of all, cleanliness is of utmost priority to me. Please let me know if you have any leads.”

In response, the 26-year-old got way more than housing offers:

“You can totally find a room for $ 800! Just will have more than a few roomies, so be warned,” one woman wrote. “Also, and I apologize if this is inappropriate, but umm … boyyyy you fine!”

Others got real bold and straight-up proposed to Munir:

The post had 363 “likes” at last count and got plenty of media attention. Munir said he never expected such an “enthusiastic” response when he wrote the listing.

“It was pretty overwhelming,” he told HuffPost. “I wrote it and the next day I wake up and I see my post has been inundated with messages and it’s reached a number of blogs locally and internationally. I found it hilarious! The Internet is really an unpredictable place.”

Though people have been “very helpful and kind” in helping Munir look for a room, he’s still mulling over his housing options.

And to answer the question on seemingly everyone’s minds: Yes, your boy is single.

“I’m single but trying to focus on my career at the moment,” he told HuffPost.

New Doctor Who Review

Spoilers follow for this episode of Doctor Who.

Last week it was to the future for the Doctor and Bill, but with this week’s episode the new friends have wound up more than 200 years in the past. For Bill, who’s still finding her TARDIS legs as a companion, a mere couple of centuries is more than enough time to drive home how much London, and society, will change by the time she’s born. But even more alarmingly for her, she’s also getting a better sense of who the Doctor is… and what he’s capable of.

“Thin Ice” takes the opportunity to visit an actual historical event, specifically the “Frost Fairs” that would pop up on the Thames during the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries when the river would occasionally freeze. The TARDIS, “bad girl” that she is, arrives at the last of these fairs in 1814, when, yes, an elephant walked across the river. But that’s not the only giant creature doing the bidding of man during this particular moment of London’s past…

Meet Pearl Mackie, The 20-Something Shaking Up ‘Doctor Who’

When Pearl Mackie began the audition process for “Doctor Who,” she didn’t know she was auditioning for “Doctor Who.”

She’d been starring in the West End production of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time” when her agent asked if she was available to tryout for a part in a show called “Mean Town.” With little more information, Mackie said she was free and agreed to wait for more details on the opportunity. When her agent contacted her again, she told the actress that “Mean Town” wasn’t actually a show, it was an anagram for “Woman Ten.” Turns out, Mackie wasn’t just auditioning for a poorly titled drama or sitcom, she was now in the running to become the newest female companion on “Doctor Who” Season 10.

“I was like, riiight, OK, I’m never gonna get that,” the London-born Mackie told The Huffington Post in a phone interview. Long story short, she did. After an initial audition, she performed lines alongside a theatrical Peter Capaldi, the resident Doctor entering into his final season as a time-traveling alien this year.

“He’s running pressing buttons and pulling levers, because he knows where everything is in the TARDIS,” Mackie recounted. “And I’m sort of just standing, open-mouthed, looking around in wonder, kind of thinking ― What is going on here? This is the maddest experience of my life. I’ve just had the most intense experience, and I can’t even tell anyone about it.”

Secrecy is par for the course when it comes to the BBC show, which ran for 26 seasons between the 1960s and 1980s, only to return in a 2005 revival that’s about to air its Season 10 premiere on BBC America on April 15. But Mackie’s character, Bill Potts, is anything but traditional. According to The Guardian, she’ll be the show’s first openly gay companion, a woman who’s been described as “completely fresh and new,” perhaps due in part to the fact that the actress behind the role has never really watched more than one episode of the show.

Check out our entire interview with Mackie, in which we talked about her character’s persona, the pressures of joining the “Doctor Who” family, and what representation on television means to her.

I love your character’s name ― Bill. Is there anything behind the name? Is it short for anything?

Well, no, not as far as I know. She’s just called Bill! I wondered the same, but I haven’t discovered anything, unless they’ve got big plans for a reveal later on. No, as far as I know, it’s just Bill.

Fans have been speculating that Bill is from the ‘80s and that there might be a parallel to a former “Who” companion, Ace ― is any of this true? I’ve read that “Doctor Who” showrunner Steven Moffat has hinted otherwise.

She is not from the ‘80s, no. She is very much from now. She’s very much a present-day woman. Kind of a normal young woman, really. Kind of a nod there, in her vintage-inspired outfits, but she’s definitely not from the ‘80s.

Is there anything else you can tell us about Bill’s origins that won’t incite utter rage from the BBC?

Yeah! In terms of personality, she’s very open and she’s very real. When I read Steven’s script, I was very struck by how fully rounded the character was. Not sort of struck in terms of being surprised by Steven’s writing ― because, I mean, we all know how good that is ― but it was very much more that I felt she was already there. She had a history. She felt like a real person that you would meet. And someone that you’d like. She’s quite open. She’s quite honest ― sometimes to her detriment. She doesn’t necessarily always think things through before saying them. But I don’t do that very well either, so maybe that’s why I related to her. But yeah, she’s quite witty and quite intelligent and very human and driven by her gut and the way she feels about things, which is something that I really liked.

Do we know how old she is or where she was born?

I mean, she’s about early 20s, I would say. Yeah, that kind of age. Aaand I don’t know if I can say where she’s born. In the U.K.! To be vague.

Well, obviously the entire “Doctor Who” universe is filled with a ton of secrecy and a lot of these really really dedicated fans. I saw that kids are already dressing up as your character online. What has your life as a companion been like so far ― even before the show has aired?

It’s been kind of a whirlwind. It’s sort of like being welcomed into like the biggest, most enthusiastic family at a family gathering and being introduced to them all at the same time. And, you know, everyone’s got really strong opinions about what it is you’re about to do, which can be a little bit overwhelming at times. But I think, for me, it’s been amazing. It’s such a wonderful thing to be part of a show that means so much to so many people. You know, people relate to “Doctor Who” in such a personal way, which I think is why people have their own personal favorite Doctor, their favorite companion, their favorite monsters, their favorite episodes. It’s a very strong relationship for a lot of people. And it’s been wonderful to be to be welcomed so wholeheartedly into it.

Did you do any particular research before you took on the role? Did you brush up on any of the history or any of the fan theories?

You know, I didn’t watch much of “Doctor Who” when I was a kid. I didn’t watch any of the feature series ― I think I’ve watched one episode. But obviously you’d have to be living in some type of a hole to not be aware of the show. After getting the job, I said to Steven and [executive producer] Brian [Minchin], “Look, give me the back catalog and let me watch everything.” And they said, “Well, what you’re doing at the moment is great. You’re bringing a really nice sort of freshness to it. And, you know, you experiencing things as Bill is kind of experiencing things seemed to work really well. So don’t watch it!”

And also, I kind of felt like as an actor watching someone play what is essentially your role [as a companion] and watching them do it so well, it would be hard not to borrow a little bit here and there, even subconsciously. And I really didn’t want to do that because I thought Bill was supposed to be completely fresh and completely new to this. So I thought it was best not to [watch].

Did Peter Capaldi or some of the other cast and crew members give you any memorable advice during your first moments on set?

Peter was great. He gave me a little card and a scented candle for my new flat in Cardiff. It was really sweet. It’s such a big beast of a show, you know, in terms of its its reach and its fan base and all the extra little bits that make up the world of Doctor Who. But he said, “Remember why you’re here. You’re here because you’re really good.” Which was very kind of him to say. “The acting is what you’re here to do ― that’s the main job. We’re here to create this show and everything else is on top. But all of that can be a bit too much sometimes. It can seem like a lot, but if it does, here’s my number. Feel free to have a chat with me about it if anything seems too overwhelming.” Which was very lovely.

The trailer for the upcoming “Who” season contains the line, “2017 needs us.” And Peter Capaldi has hinted in interview that while Season 9 began to reflect on the modern world a bit more, he thinks we might see more of that in Season 10. Does this mean we’re going to hear about contemporary politics at all on the show?

Ummm, there might be some areas of contemporary politics in this series. Yes, indeed. But not in a very direct way. In a way that is open to interpretation, as all good art that imitates life is. If you know what I mean? Am I being too abstract?

I can’t imagine keeping secrets, so I applaud you. On to the next question! One of my favorite “Doctor Who” fan theories claims that the Doctor always regenerates into a face he’s seen before. So, is there any chance the character of Bill is just one giant teaser for your eventual takeover as the Doctor? Would you turn down the role?

What, would I turn down the role of Doctor Who? No, I’d be mad to do that, wouldn’t I? Can you imagine if someone was like, “Do you want to be Doctor Who?” And you were like, “Nah, I’m alright. One of the most exciting jobs in television? Nah, you can leave that, actually. I’m over it.” That’s not to say that’s what is going to happen. I mean, who knows?

There’s been loads of discussion about the all-male Doctor roster ― we’ve yet to see a woman tackle the role. What do you make of the show’s track record with representation?

I think in terms of representation, this series is doing pretty well from what I’ve seen so far. Hopefully, by the end of the series, we might have another conversation, or you might think the same. But in terms of playing the character of Doctor Who next, hopefully, they get whoever is best for the job, whatever gender or race that may be.

You mentioned in a Guardian interview that you didn’t see many people who looked like you on TV growing up. When you think about your role on this show, are you thinking about the fans today who might still feel the same way you did?

I think as an actress of color, there’s always that kind of responsibility. And especially in a prime-time, widely reaching show. For me, if even a couple of kids can look at Bill on “Doctor Who” and think, hey, she looks like me, maybe that means there’s more room for me in the world of acting or the world of television or the world of fighting aliens, then that’s a good thing, you know? I think it is important to see people that look like you and to show that there is a place for you in the world. That you do exist and that you are important. But then, that said, you know, I am only playing one person and she’s not supposed to be representative of every person and every young woman of color, because that would be a generalization that we wouldn’t want to make either.

“Doctor Who” Season 10 premieres Saturday, April 15 at 9 p.m. ET on BBC America.

Tilda Swinton Releases Email Exchange With Margaret Cho About Whitewashing In ‘Doctor Strange’

Everyone in Hollywood has apparently learned a lesson from the Taylor Swift/Kim Kardashian Snapchat debacle of 2016: always keep your receipts.

On Wednesday, comedian Margaret Cho revealed that Tilda Swinton reached out over email to discuss the controversy surrounding her casting as the Ancient One in “Doctor Strange,” a character who is a Tibetan man in comic book canon. Swinton’s casting was immediately met with resistance from the Asian and Asian-American community, which has historically been erased and stereotyped on screen due to Hollywood selecting white actors to play roles intended for them.

“Tilda eventually emailed me and she said that she didn’t understand why people were so mad about ‘Doctor Strange’ and she wanted to talk about it, and wanted to get my take on why all the Asian people were mad,” Cho told actor Bobby Lee on his podcast TigerBelly. “It was so weird.”

Cho and Swinton evidently had a “long discussion” about whitewashing in the film industry, which the “Snowpiercer” actress asked her not make public. The conversation struck an uncomfortable note for Cho, an unapologetic critic of Hollywood’s representational deficiencies, who in her own words, ended up feeling like a “house Asian.”

In response to Cho’s interview, Swinton’s team released the entire unedited email exchange on Friday for “the opportunity to clarify and with all good wishes to all,” according to Vulture. Later that night, Cho made a statement reiterating that “Asian actors should play Asian roles,” but writing that she remains a huge fan of Swinton’s.

The five emails between the two actresses were written in May 2016 months before the premiere of “Doctor Strange,” as the backlash to Swinton’s casting gained traction. You can read them below:

On Friday, May 13, 2016, Tilda Swinton wrote:

Dear Margaret,

We’ve never met, but you’ve been in my head for years – I’m a fan.
I want to ask you a favour now which is sprung out of a truly important social conversation but may be heading for some crazy-making shit.

The diversity debate – ALL STRENGTH to it – has come knocking at the door of Marvel’s new movie DR STRANGE.

I am told that you are aware of this.  But since I am that extinct beast that does no social media, I am unaware of what exactly anybody has said about any of it.  I believe there are some ironies about this particular film being a target, but I’m frankly much more interested in listening than saying anything much.

I would really love to hear your thoughts and have a – private – conversation about it. Are you up for this?  Can we e-mail?

No wrong answer here.  Tell me to fuck off if you feel like it.  In any and every case,

Much love to you,

Sure! I’m a big fan of yours – since orlando!

Well, what do you know so far? I can tell you from my perspective what’s happening!

The character you played in Dr Strange was originally written as a Tibetan man and so there’s a frustrated population of Asian Americans who feel the role should have gone to a person of Asian descent.

The largerpart of the debate has to do with the ‘whitewashing’ of Asian and Asian Americans in film. Our stories are told by white actors over and over again and we feel at a loss to know how to cope with it.

Protest seems to be the only solution- we just want more representative images of ourselves in film. TV is getting better in terms of diversity but film is lagging behind.

Anyway – hope this helps! We can totally email and we can be private! Best, m

On Friday, May 13, 2016, Tilda Swinton wrote:

Thank you so much for your reply! So grateful to have a chance to chew this cud with you.  Super clear.

Here’s the situation I reckon Marvel was in. The old comic books from way back when are stuffed with stereotypes that we could all find offensive for any number of reasons.

The film – like any film adaptation – is a riff on the books. The Ancient One may have been written as a Tibetan man in the comics, but Marvel, in a conscious effort to shake up stereotypes, wanted to avoid tired cliché. They cast Chiwetel Ejiofor as the second lead – a white Transylvanian in the books. And wrote a significant Asian character to be played by Benedict Wong.

With The Ancient One (the ‘wise old Eastern geezer’ Fu Manchu type in the book), wanting to switch up the gender (another diversity department) and not wanting to engage with the old ‘Dragon Lady’ trope, they chose to write the character as being of (ancient) Celtic origin and offered that role to me. Presumably on Ancient grounds. I accepted happily, impressed that, for once, they aimed to disrupt the ‘wisdom must be male’ never-ending story – and, by the way, for once, wanting to feature a woman who’s a badass, over 26 and not simply bursting out of a bikini.

The biggest irony about this righteous protest targeting this particular film is the pains the makers went to to avoid it.

A  – personal – irony to my being even remotely involved in this controversy is what I stand up for and always have.  Whether it is challenging the idea of what women look like, or how any of us live our lives, or how we educate our children, diversity is pretty much my comfort zone.  The idea of being caught on the wrong side of this debate is a bit of a nightmare to me.

I am as sick as anybody at the lack of a properly diverse cinematic universe. Pretty much sick of the Anglophone world in general, sick of all the men’s stories, sick of all the symmetrical features and Mattel-inspired limbs..

I’m a Scottish woman of 55 who lives in the Highlands. There’s precious little projected on contemporary cinema screens that means a great deal to my life, if truth be told.

So

How best might we focus this thing?  To offer intelligent and empowered thinking..  And see something constructive coming out of this moment?

Ducking the issue is not what I am about.  I want to meet it, but, if possible, move things forward by how I meet it.

I realise, as far as I am concerned, this possibly means saying nothing:  so far I have attempted to correct the notion that I accepted an offer to play an Asian.. (!!) the most significant and damaging misunderstanding out there, it seems. Beyond that, I don’t feel it appropriate for me to add anything, certainly at this point.

But I would love to know what ideas you – or anyone you know –  have of something properly progressive to bring to this table. The debate is so important for all of us. It needs to build itself on strong ground.

love

Subject: Re: Strange matters

I’m totally unfamiliar with all the comic books so I can’t speak on anything about that – and the efforts to make this film more diverse is unfortunately lost in the translation here. Hopefully that comes up more when the film comes out and is finally brought to audiences!

I think that it’s just a timing thing – Asian Americans are fed up with not being given roles even if the part called for someone of Asian descent  – and that the Ancient One role was being used as another example of ‘whitewashing’. Social media has grown to the point where we can use it effectively to express – well whatever.

I believe very much that you as an artist are about diversity and your body of work shows that – but this particular case of the Ancient One is just another in a long list of ‘whitewashed’ Asian characters and so you’re likely to feel the heat of history.

I am not sure what to say other than I am glad you want to meet the issue head on – it’s a tough one I know.

I think that talking about the issue frankly – as you have done with me is the right way to go. It’s hard I know – people get very angry and it’s difficult to know what to do to get around that anger. But you should know that it’s anger built up over many many years of invisibility within film/tv/media that’s just exploded now with this film. And it’s not just you – It’s also directed at Scarlett Johanssen for Ghost in the Shell.

Maybe what’s best is the highlight the diversity that you do see in the film and that being why you felt drawn to the project.

Also acknowledge that you’re all about diversity and how you want the films you make to be diverse and how film can benefit from that.

I’d even suggest getting into producing content that would give Asian American voices a platform? That’s really what is being asked for. Asian Americans feel as if we have no place in film and so we want one to be created. Whether that is found in supporting projects that would bring Asians into the foreground or even just discussing what it would take to do such a thing would help.

On Friday, May 13, 2016, Tilda Swinton wrote:

I can’t thank you enough for this.

It really helps me sort out the lay of the land. To be continued.

By the way, the project I have been developing as a producer over the past two years is with Bong Joon Ho – my colleague from SNOWPIERCER – a film called OKJA shooting this summer in Korea, NYC and Vancouver – to my knowledge the first ever half Korean/half English speaking film, which we are making with Plan B and Netflix, in which the lead is a 14 year old girl from Korea and which stars Steven Yeun, amongst others..  fingers crossed it will be a big deal and help the landscape somewhat.. I hope and believe it will.

5 Things to Know About The Serial Killer Doctor Who Murdered for Revenge

On the afternoon of March 13, 2008, Dr. William Hunter, a Residency Program Director for the Department of Pathology at Creighton University, discovered the bodies of his 11-year-old son and housekeeper, Shirlee Sherman, in their Omaha home. Both victims were brutally stabbed in the right side of the neck.

Five years later, tragedy struck again at Creighton University’s pathology program: Police discovered the bodies of Roger and Mary Brumback, both 65, in their West Omaha home on May 14, 2013. Roger, the chair of Creighton’s Department of Pathology, was discovered in the entranceway, shot three times and stabbed six times in the neck. Mary was found nearby in the living room, stabbed more than 20 times in the neck.

Months later, the chilling truth came out when police arrested their prime suspect, Anthony Garcia, a former Creighton pathology resident. Authorities believe the killings were fueled by Garcia’s long-simmering rage after Brumback and Hunter fired him from Creighton University in 2001 and later wrote letters that kept him from getting medical licenses in different states and acceptance to other residency programs.

• For more on the revenge killings by Dr. Anthony Garcia, subscribe now to PEOPLE, or pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands today.

Garcia was charged with four counts of first-degree murder in July of 2013. In October, a jury found Garcia guilty of the murders. He was also was convicted of four counts of use of a deadly weapon and one count of attempted burglary. He has yet to be sentenced.

Here are five things to know about the serial killer doctor who murdered for revenge.

1. Anthony Garcia Was a Regular at Terra Haute Strip Clubs

Garcia was a regular customer at strip clubs in Indiana, where he was known as Dr. Tony. The week after his arrest, police interviewed a stripper who told police that Garcia admitted to killing a “young boy and an old lady,” says Sean Lynch, deputy Douglas County attorney.

2. Garcia was Terminated from Creighton After Attempting to Sabotage a Fellow Resident

Police learned Garcia was put on review status after a botched autopsy and was later terminated by Brumback and Turner for attempting to sabotage a fellow resident who was taking a “high stakes” exam.

“He called the guy’s wife and said your husband was supposed to work tonight at Creighton and he needs to drop what he is doing and get to work,” explains Omaha Police Department detective Derek Mois. “He wanted to derail him taking the exam.”

3. The Latter Two Victims Were Killed Two Weeks After Garcia Was Fired from Another Residency Program

Authorities believe Garcia finally snapped in February of 2008 when he was fired from the Louisiana State University residency program for having failed to disclose his termination at Creighton. LSU officials had confirmed his dismissal with William Hunter.

4. Garcia Was Initially Booked for DUI on the Day of His Arrest

Police say when Garcia was pulled over, he was intoxicated and initially booked on a DUI charge.

“When I told him he was under arrest for the murder of four people, his only response was, ‘Oh ok,’” says Mois. “An innocent guy is going to pull a complete tantrum in my mind. This guy was as calm as a cucumber. He had zero reaction. I don’t think he blinked. What we walked away from is this was a guy who knew this day was coming. It was reckoning day.”

5. Garcia Allegedly Had More Targets

Police believe that Garcia wasn’t finished killing. “He had done research on other people who had perceivably wronged him,” says Mois. “I believe he had another victim in mind. We found enough that makes me say fairly confidently that if he had not been arrested when he was, there was going to be another potential victim.”

‘Doctor Strange’ Takes Top Spot At The Box Office For Second Weekend In A Row

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – Alien invasion thriller “Arrival” capitalized on strong reviews to score an impressive debut, while Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” topped the box office for the second consecutive weekend.

The superhero adventure picked up $ 43 million to bring its domestic total to $ 153 million. DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls,” another holdover, came in second, earning $ 35 million to bring its stateside haul to $ 94 million after two weeks of release.

“Arrival” took third, easily outpacing pre-release tracking with a debut of $ 24 million. Heading into the weekend, the film was expected to launch to $ 16 million. “Arrival” was directed by Denis Villeneuve, who has built a steady following with the likes of “Prisoners” and “Sicario.” It focuses on a linguist (Amy Adams) who is recruited to try to communicate with alien visitors. Paramount picked up domestic rights to the film for $ 20 million. FilmNation, Lava Bear and 21 Laps financed the $ 47 million production.

“Arrival’s” strong box office result is a shot in the arm for Paramount, which has weathered a string of flops such as “Zoolander 2,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows,” and “Ben-Hur.” The instability starts at the top. Viacom, Paramount’s corporate parent, was engulfed in an internecine war for much of the past year, as Shari Redstone, the daughter of founder Sumner Redstone, successfully worked to oust Philippe Dauman from his perch as the company’s CEO. Paramount chief Brad Grey is trying to convince Shari Redstone that he has the vision to lead the company out of its doldrums, and has pointed to films like “Arrival” as proof that the studio’s slate is improving.

Universal’s “Almost Christmas” debuted to a solid $ 15.6 million across 2,376 locations for a fourth place finish. The comedy about a dysfunctional family gathering for the holidays after their mother dies was economical to produce and carries a $ 17 million budget. It stars Danny Glover, Gabrielle Union, Kimberly Elise and Jessie Usher.

Liongate’s “Hacksaw Ridge” rounded out the top five, earning $ 10.8 million to bring the war drama’s total to $ 32.3 million.

Among the weekend’s other wide releases, EuropaCorp’s “Shut In” stumbled out of the gate, kicking off to a paltry $ 3.7 million from 2,058 locations.

Sony bowed “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” on two screens where it made $ 120,300. The Iraq War drama is shot at an accelerated framerate, but few theaters will be able to exhibit the film at that speed. The limited release did exhibit the picture in the immersive format that director Ang Lee has pushed theaters to incorporate. It was screened in 4K, 3D, and at 120 frames per second. “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” will expand next weekend on to more than 800 theaters.

In limited release, Sony Pictures Classics debuted “Elle” on two screens where it earned $ 56,012. The thriller stars Isabelle Huppert as a woman who plots revenge against the man who raped her.

The Spanking Doctor

The Spanking Doctor

Dave loved to spank women and Melanie, his steady girlfriend of 2 years was happy to be on the other end of his strong arm whenever he wanted her. Their recent games with other couples had given them both a bit of a taste for other women and Dave was itching to chastise another man’s wife. Melanie had the idea: why not advertise for one?Extract: Does your wife need a spanking? Are you a wife who is gagging to have her bottom reddened? Are you confused about domestic discipline? Stop worrying and call the spanking doctor. Dave jumped straight in. “Why do you want your bottom spanked Angela?”There was a pause while the woman thought about that. “Erm, I do a job where I’m bossy all day and sometimes I feel I just want somebody to tell me what to do and sort of take me in hand. Is that all right?” she added hopefully.”That’s very honest of you, Angela. What is your job?”I’m a maths teacher.”I see!” Dave paused for effect. “How would you describe yourself Angela? Physically I mean. Will I find you attractive?”Well, I’m five foot nine, with light brown hair that goes to my shoulders. I’m told my face is pretty; I have large brown eyes and pouty lips…”What are your measurements, Angela?”36C-24-34.”Very nice. Describe your nipples. Do they stick through your clothes when you’re cold or excited?”Yes, they are very obvious.”Do other men find you attractive?”Yes.”How do you know?”I often catch them looking at me when they think I haven’t noticed.”Good. Are they sexually excited?”Sometimes!”So you look straight back at their cocks! What about other women?”Excuse me…Master David?”Do you catch other women looking at you?”Angela paused and was clearly embarrassed when she answered in a low voice. “Yes.”Are they sexually excited?”Erm, I’m not sure… Yes, I suppose so.”And does that excite you Angela?”…yes!

Dave Grohl’s Doctor Joined The Foo Fighters To Cover The White Stripes

Orthopedic doctors can be rock ‘n’ roll stars too, if just for one night.

During the Foo Fighters’ show at Fenway Park in Boston on Sunday, Dave Grohl’s doctor joined the band for a White Stripes cover — typical orthopedic surgeon duties. Dr. Lew C. Schon is the physician who performed surgery on Grohl’s leg, which the frontman broke during a stage-jump in Sweden last month.

During the Foo Fighters’ stop in Boston, Schon came on stage to help cover The White Stipes’ “Seven Nation Army.” While Grohl performed from his light-up guitar throne, which he thought up while on morphine in the hospital, the doctor joined his patient on lead vocals for the White Stripes classic, and totally killed it. (Watch out, Jack White.)

After Schon left the stage, Grohl explained to the crowd who he was.”Holy shit, that’s actually my doctor,” Grohl said. “What a badass.” If you need orthopedic work and want to do karaoke after, Dr. Schon is your guy.

2014-12-19-Whoville2014.jpg

Santa Claus is a Time Lord. Like the ancient race of Gallifreyans from the 51-year-old British sci-fi series Doctor Who, St. Nick can manipulate time and space, uses “bigger on the inside” tech with his bag of toys, loves candy (maybe even Jelly Babies), and generally encourages a sense of optimism and wonder around his companions of choice: humans.

Santa as a Time Lord is not a new concept; actually it kind of was when I suggested it last year with my first Christmas in Who-ville Gift Guide. But what began as a nerdy theory for last year’s 50th anniversary of the long-running show feels even more like a reality now that Santa Claus is teaming up with the Doctor in the annual Doctor Who Christmas Special, “Last Christmas,” airing stateside at 9 p.m. on Dec. 25.

Over the past nine years, the Christmas specials have become a modern holiday tradition for fans, but showrunner Steven Moffat said in a recent interview the connection between the Saint and the Doctor runs deeper. Like the holiday season, he said the show is something that brings families together.

Doctor Who isn’t like other sci-fi shows because it’s kind of more magical than that,” Moffat added. “It’s a sort of a magic man in a magic box all like dressed up in sci-fi language … and it features at its core this improbable man with a time machine who does feel like the science fiction equivalent of Santa Claus.”

Aside from a comic strip featuring the first incarnation of the Doctor (played by William Hartnell), “Last Christmas” is the first time the two will square off. And if the teasers are any indication, sparks between the two guardians of humanity will fly.

To celebrate this meeting of two larger-than-life characters, I present my second Huffington Post Christmas in Who-ville Gift Guide. Whether you’re buying for yourself or your favorite companion, what follows are perfect goodies for Whovians. And although the shopping days until the 25th are dwindling, remember that time is never really an issue for Time Lords and Ladies.

Expert Who-ligans
Artist Ian Leino’s “Doctor Who-ville” Seussian tee (above, $ 20) was a perfect blend of holiday joy and sci-fi nerdiness when it first debuted. It featured 11 generations of the Doctor, and K-9, singing a Time Lord carol around the TARDIS. But this year Leino has updated the design to include not only the War Doctor but Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi and The Moment device. The image is ccreenprinted on American Apparel 100% soft jersey cotton shirts. And while you’re at it, check out Josiah Bancroft’s Who-liday poem on Leino’s site.

2014-12-19-PixelWho.jpg
Another fan whose work is right at home in Who-ville is Nathan Skreslet and his Pixel Who art. Combining 8-bit pixels with an insane amount of knowledge about the show, Skreslet has created some of the most detailed Who designs out there. The prints are essentially character line-ups from the show, largely focusing on various incarnations of the Doctor. Even for an expert Whovian, the level of minutia he fits into the prints is staggering. Check out the two-part Fourth Doctor set ($ 57) as an example – and let it serve as a warning never to challenge Nathan in Doctor Who trivia.

2014-12-19-DoctorWhoWatch.jpg
Timeless style
Not to borrow from a different sci-fi franchise but you can’t help but look at this collector’s watch and think, “Shiny!” A fantastic item with stainless steel bezel and leather strap, the TARDIS watch ($ 180) features elements from the iconic blue police call box. With Gallifreyan script and Roman numerals on the face, this would easily be appreciated as a designer timepiece if seen by the non-Whovian (though they might wonder about your affiliation with the St. John Ambulance Association). But when spotted by a true believer, you’ll receive a nod of approval. This is a gift for the discerning fan who wants to live like a Time Lord every day. Meanwhile, the “Spin Doctor” from Paul Michael Design is a gorgeous Doctor Who-inspired pendant ($ 295+) available in sterling silver, 14 karat white and yellow gold as well as platinum. It can also be customized in an enameled version, or with diamonds and sapphires and created gems. Take it for a spin on the town or through the galaxy.

Bath Time Lord
Do you wish you had more time to enjoy the shower? Incorporate a little Doctor Who into your bathroom, and you might start to feel like you have all the time in the universe to enjoy your morning routine. It can feel like you’re stepping inside a TARDIS when you hang the blue police box shower curtain in your loo ($ 20), but you should make your cleaning space feel bigger on the inside with the Who shower rack ($ 30). On the outside, step onto a soft blue box with the TARDIS bath mat (also great for living spaces), and dry off with the plush 100 percent cotton three-piece TARDIS towel set tastefully designed with police call box images ($ 50). To round out your morning, spend some time in the Fourth Doctor robe ($ 70). Brown like Tom Baker’s coat, with a multi-colored collar resembling his scarf, this is the perfect wardrobe to spend a luxurious day (or seven seasons) in.

2014-12-19-DoctorWhoKitchen.jpg
Kitchen Master
One of the truly great parts of all these products dedicated to the show is how great they look even to non-fans. The blue police call box design is minimal and modern, and catches the eye without being gaudy. As such, I give you TARDIS teatime, an assembly of Who items for your eating space. Protect your tabletops with a TARDIS tablecloth made out of a cotton/polyester blend, measuring 54.8″ x 73″ ($ 20), and set the table with four Melamine square plates ($ 25) featuring the classic call box elements. The light-up TARDIS Cookie Jar ($ 20), which makes VWORPing sounds, will also perfectly hold some Jammy Dodgers. Of course you’ll need to serve up some biscuits on a blue TARDIS tea tray ($ 30), which actually fits quite a bit – including a lightweight ceramic TARDIS teapot. Unlike the time machine, you can pop the top off this box, brew 25 ounces of tea within it, and easily pour it out through a big blue spout (definitely a Cyberman-approved upgrade). In case of spills, you should also order a set of machine washable cotton tea towels, one that looks like the front of the TARDIS while the other is the telephone panel sign ($ 20).

2014-12-19-DoctorrWhoTheMattSmithYearsBluRay.jpg
View to a Who
It has been about a year since Matt Smith departed from the series, but the actor’s legacy as one of the show’s most popular Doctors lives on. To celebrate his time on the TARDIS, BBC released the “Complete Matt Smith Years” Blu-ray collector’s set ($ 134). Presented within a lovely book – designed to look like silver Gallifreyan symbols carved into worn TARDIS-blue wood – the 16-disc collection includes every Matt Smith episode, along with “The Day of the Doctor” 50th Anniversary Special, “The Time of the Doctor” Christmas Special and the “An Adventure In Space And Time” TV movie. It additionally contains a previously unreleased bonus disc chockablock with the “Doctor Who Proms 2013,” “The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot,” “Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide,” and Smith’s two-episode appearance on The Sarah Jane Adventures. The set is a must-have for Smith fans, and an ultimate send-off to the immensely popular Eleventh Doctor. After saying goodbye to 11, say hello to the Twelth Doctor with the complete Season Eight on DVD ($ 72). Starring Peter “attack eyebrows” Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, the (appropriately)12-episode season set includes behind-the-scenes footage for each installment, a tour of the TARDIS, and a mini-doc following the “Doctor Who World Tour.” It also includes a video for The Foxes’ version of Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” as seen on the episode “Mummy on the Orient Express.”

While not a Time Lord, the Great Detective Sherlock Holmes is something of a spiritual cousin to the Doctor, and as such has earned a spot on this list. Also executive produced by Steven Moffat (and co-created with Whovian Mark Gatiss), Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Smaug/Khan/Dr. Strange) and Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins/Arthur Dent) 21st century versions of Holmes and trusty Watson. This limited edition Blu-ray set ($ 150) collects every episode from the show’s exceptional three seasons, and also includes two original art cards and a bonus disc that with “never-before-seen” outtakes, a deleted scene, BBC archive interviews, and audio commentaries. But there is no mystery to the fact that the Sherlock and John mini-busts are the best part of the gift, and would look great on a bookshelf in any home or TARDIS.

Doctor Who Season 8, Episode 11: Dark Water

SPOILER ALERT: Don’t read ahead if you haven’t watched Doctor Who series 8, episode 11: Dark Water

With all the shade I’ve thrown at Steven Moffat during his reign as the Doctor Who show runner, one thing I can’t hate on is how well he knows and trolls the fandom. Last week Tumblr was buzzing with a phenomenal theory that Missy was a dark iteration of Clara merged with The Great Intelligence resurfacing from the Doctor’s Timeline. It seemed like all the loose ends since the introduction of Clara Oswald as the new companion would get tied up in a pretty bow. It would explain who gave Clara The Doctor’s number, who placed the ad in the paper and maybe even answer my favorite mystery of why River was able to maintain a psychic link with Clara after the latter jumped into The Doctor’s timeline. Moffat very skillfully reinforced those speculations in the preview for ‘Dark Water,’ cutting together scenes that made Clara and The Doctor seem at odds. It was a similar strategy that we saw for ‘Mummy On The Orient Express,’ as Clara was completely left out of the trailer, launching the fandom into a frenzy over her departure from The Doctor.

I had the same reaction to the revelation of Missy’s identity as I’ve had to most other Moffat mysteries, shocked and not surprised all at the same time. But before diving into the big reveal, we have talk about the true lifeline of this season, Clara’s relationship with The Doctor.

‘Dark Water’ made me seriously fall in love with Clara’s dynamic with Capaldi’s Doctor. For much of Jenna Coleman’s initial tenure as the companion, I had a hard time buying into her disposition toward The Doctor. However with so much of this season focused pretty much entirely on Clara as a three dimensional character, the emotional narrative arc feels like it is coming to a logical conclusion. In the past my biggest issue with Moffat’s treatment of Clara has been the lack of reasoning behind her actions, but this season everything she’s done makes perfect sense.

After a tragic phone call with Danny, Clara attempts to black mail The Doctor into rewriting history. She is so distressed by her loss that she completely betrays The Doctor. This is a defining moment in their relationship and specifically for the new Doctor. We see him being completely empathetic towards a friend, despite an entire season of being an old grouch. There is nuance to his personality, it makes him relatable and a hero an audience can identify with.

Overall, Capaldi was magnificent in this episode. It took me a long time to warm up to his portrayal, especially as a lot of the lines he was given in the beginning of the season were simply annoying. In ‘Dark Water’ he finally struck the right comedic balance that didn’t feel forced. In most of the episodes we’d seen so far he seemed like a formulaic one trick pony per episode, either constantly rude, or constantly “dark” and mysterious, or constantly goofy. The writing in ‘Dark Water’ highlighted the best assets of Capaldi especially his comedic timing.

The character narrative on the show is at its highest, however the same can’t be said for the plot. As we finally found out that Missy is a regenerated Master. The last we saw of The Master, he was bent on revenge against Rassilon following him into the time locked Time War. This may mean that we’re about to finally revisit the fate of Gallifrey narrative, but judging by the reveals this week, I’m hesitant to bet on any one theory. As reveals go, it was almost painfully obvious, but I will reserve my last judgment until the finale.

The presence of cyberman is a little confusing, but The Master does have a history with robotic humanoids (Toclafane anyone?). I’m not really sure how the cyberman will be taking over the dead in order to take over the earth, but I guess we shall see.

It seems that the real battle will be unfolding closer to home for Clara and The Doctor. We saw Danny manipulate Clara into shutting off their connection in order to keep her form ending up in The Nethersphere, but my guess is that she will soon see through that. The most interesting cliffhanger of this episode is Danny’s fate. There’s an obvious question of why Clara was calling Danny while he was struck by a car, which ties into the story of Danny’s grandson Orson Pink. In ‘Listen’ Orson clearly implied that he and Clara were connected, leading fans to conclude that Danny and Clara would end up together… or at least have kids together. Now whether Danny will be alive to see his kids grow up is what remains to be seen next week.

Finally for those of us still holding out for the return of River Song… I’m gonna leave this right here.

The Doctor Is in

The Doctor Is in

On the day the doctor comes to the farm, ten animals line up in the barnyard. They whinny, moo, and bark, wishing that their aches and pains would go away. The animals checking in with the nurse include a pig with a runny nose, a horse with a stone in his shoe, a lamb with burrs in her coat and a rooster with a cut on his beak. There’s also a cow with a bellyache, a rabbit with a cut on his back, a crow who can’t fly, a goat who cut his mouth on a tin, a cat with a kink in his tail and a dog with a swollen paw. How will the doctor be able to help them all? “The Doctor’s In” is a wonderful tale that teaches pre-school and kindergarten-age children that a visit to the doctor doesn’t have to be a scary or painful experience.

‘House’ Helps Doctor Solve Real-Life Medical Mystery

LONDON (AP) — If you’re unlucky enough to be stricken with a rare medical condition, you’d better hope your doctor watches the right television show.

That was the lesson for one German man with severe heart failure and a puzzling mix of symptoms including fever, blindness, deafness and enlarged lymph nodes, which baffled doctors for months. The 55-year-old man was diagnosed only when he was referred to Dr. Juergen Schaefer, a fan of the U.S. television medical drama, “House.”

“After five minutes, I knew what was wrong,” said Schaefer, who works at the Center for Undiagnosed Diseases in Marburg, north of Frankfurt.

He said the man’s symptoms matched up almost perfectly with a patient on an episode in which the fictional Dr. Gregory House, played by British actor Hugh Laurie, identified cobalt poisoning as the cause. The series ended in 2012 after an eight-year run.

Schaefer regularly uses the television series to teach medical students. When he saw the patient with heart failure in May 2012, he had recently prepared a lecture on the show’s cobalt poisoning case, where House’s future mother-in-law falls ill after receiving a faulty metal hip.

Though the German patient’s previous doctors thought he needed a heart transplant, Schaefer and colleagues immediately tested his cobalt levels after he complained his problems started after his last operation to replace a broken ceramic hip.

Schaefer said some small fragments of the ceramic hip remained and were grinding into the metal replacement, which leaked cobalt and chromium into the patient’s bloodstream. Once the hip was replaced, the patient’s heart got better and his other symptoms improved.

Schaefer and colleagues wrote about their experience in a case report published online Friday in the journal, Lancet. The patient wasn’t identified.

“We would have diagnosed this even without Dr. House,” Schaefer said. “You could have also typed his symptoms into Google and gotten the diagnosis.”

He said doctors should be aware of possible cobalt poisoning in patients with metal hip replacements.

While Schaefer said he is sometimes referred to as the German Dr. House, he isn’t sure the nickname is a compliment. The television doctor was known as much for his rude, abrasive manner as for his expertise in diagnosing rare ailments.

“I would have fired this guy after the first three episodes,” Schaefer said. Still, he said the fictional doctor’s appalling bedside manner was ultimately outweighed by his unparalleled diagnostic skills.

“It’s important to be nice, but you don’t get patients healthy just by being nice.”

When is a TV show more than a TV show?

When it’s the 50th anniversary of ‘Doctor Who’, being shown on cinema screens around the world, amid plot hints and red herrings by writers, storyline clues pounced upon and debated by eager fans,

Because Steven Moffat and his team have been successfully secretive about the events around tonight’s festivities, we only know some bare bones.

Special guests at tonight’s party include Daleks, Zygons and Elizabeth I. Current companion Clara (Jenna Coleman) is joined by a familiar face in Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), during three unfolding plots set in different times, destined to unite in one almighty battle.
