Diving Into Lorde’s Dreamy And Dramatic Album Art

Lorde revealed the album art for her sophomore album “Melodrama” today, a painting by New York–based artist Sam McKinniss. The image depicts our Lorde and savior tucked into bed, locking the viewer in with her signature intense-as-hell gaze.

McKinniss has described intensity as a core element of his artistic practice, illuminating a parallel between the two artists’ penetrating styles. “I think that’s always been my style really, just looking at pictures intensely,” he told Gayletter in 2013. “Being intense. And see if you can respond in some way to the world that you live in visually with light and color.”

It’s understandable why an artist obsessed with intensity, light and color is the perfect choice to visualize the album whose first single is called “Green Light,” and was described by Lorde on Twitter as “the story of the last 2 wild, fluorescent years of my life.

LANA 4EVER

Along with intensity, McKinniss’ paintings, which often feature pop culture icons as their subjects, feed off drama. Talking to ArtNews, he described “human perversity, elegance and drama” as the key motivations behind his work.

In his loving yet slightly depraved depictions of cult celebrities from Lana del Rey to Winona Ryder, McKinniss’ fixation with spectacle is on full view. His painted subjects are drenched in shadow and electric light, elevating them from humans to icons, celebrities to artworks. Sounds just about right for an album called “Melodrama.”

From the little we’ve seen and heard regarding Lorde’s upcoming album, McKinniss’ blend of neon light and dark underbelly makes for a stunning visualization of Lorde’s matured sound. More, please, soon.

The Photos From Chanel’s Show In Cuba Are Absolutely Dreamy

Chanel continuously pushes the boundaries when it comes to its runway shows. But now, its all-mighty leader Karl Lagerfeld has literally crossed a boundary few of us in the United States can say we’ve crossed: He debuted Chanel’s 2017 Cruise Collection in Havana, Cuba.

With the imminent change in rules and regulations over travel to Cuba from the U.S., it was only a matter of time before someone Lagerfeld pulled a move like this. While traveling there is still out of the realm of possibility for many, some, like beloved fashion site The Coveteur, got to experience it first hand.

The website’s co-founders Jake Rosenberg and Stephanie Mark were on-site for the exclusive, dreamy event, capturing scenes from Havana’s beautiful surroundings and the show itself, which they explained had “essentially taken over an entire city plaza.”

There were colorful cars! Mojitos and lemonade! Tilda Swinton! And arguably most shocking of all: Lagerfeld in an uncharacteristically colorful outfit.

Check out all the dreaminess below, and to see more head to The Coveteur

Surrealism Is Alive And Well In Roberto Gil de Montes’ Dreamy Depictions

Roberto Gil de Montes’ paintings exist in a hazy terrain somewhere between Mexico and Los Angeles, art history and folklore, a memory and a dream.

His works are tapestries of life as it exists around us and as it lives in our minds, weaved together into two-dimensional fields. His colors are as buttery and sharp as morning, rendered with the soft edges of a legend partly forgotten. “Hecho en México,” a new series of neo-surrealist artworks, are the perfect antidote to gallery trends and their clever emptiness.

“I paint as a way of discovering stories hidden within myself, peeling away layers, digging deeper each time, revealing images of forgotten stories,” Gil de Montes says in the gallery statement. Gazing upon his artworks feels like traveling through time, unearthing Pre-Columbian symbols and painted allusions without a singular guide to navigate the journey.

Rather than merely depicting the world, Gil de Montes invites viewers to physically experience it,” the L.A. Times wrote in 1996. “His painting’s stark, jarring contrasts and highly animated patterns stimulate your retinas, causing your body to respond well before your brain has a chance to intervene.”

In his works you’ll recognize reincarnations of Paul Gauguin’s “Spirit of the Dead Watching” and Henri Rousseau’s “The Sleeping Gypsy.” Yet scroll further and you’ll see a delicate rendering of a shirtless selfie of two men entitled “Facebook Photo.” Despite the thematic leap from mythical badlands to social media uploads, the sense of mystical possibility lingers. The electric potential lies in every colored mark, each one drawing the viewer deeper into a vibrant land where enchanted tigers and computer screens can coexist.

“Hecho en México” runs from April 5 until May 10 at Lora Schlesinger Gallery in Los Angeles. See a preview of the work below.
