Economic Incentives Key to Solving U.K. Fashion Industry’s Sustainability Issue, Says Parliament

LONDON — Sustainability campaigners have applauded a new report by the U.K.’s Environmental Audit Committee that highlights the culture of throwaway fashion and the unfavorable working conditions in the country’s apparel factories.
“The report is unequivocal in its message: ‘The fashion industry’s current business model is clearly unsustainable,’” said Prof. Dilys Williams, director at the London College of Fashion’s Centre for Sustainable Fashion. “Its call for action is one that involves us all, as designers, makers, sellers, buyers, wearers, investors, educators, communicators and legislators.”
Williams added that education, and ongoing collaboration, between tutors, students, researchers and NGOs, can be a big driver of change.
Frances Corner, head of London College of Fashion, focused on the report’s suggestion that schools teach younger students how to repair clothes. She said some of the most vital steps in addressing fashion’s sustainability issue is putting an end to “throwaway” fashion.
“I hope this report marks a turning point — as has been identified by Mary Creagh [the member of Parliament who spearheaded the investigation] that a voluntary approach to sustainability has not worked. It’s now time for the U.K. fashion industry to lead by example,” said Corner.
The report is the result of an investigation that took place throughout

Pitti Uomo to Open in Uncertain Economic Scenario

During the seasonal press conference held on Thursday by trade show organizer Pitti Immagine to present the schedule of Florence-based international men’s wear fair Pitti Uomo, running Jan. 10-13, Italian fashion and textile consortium SMI Sistema Moda Italia released its research on the status of the country’s textile and fashion compartment.
According to the study, after a positive first quarter that saw revenues gain 2.2 percent, compared with the same period last year, the second quarter slowed down, posting a 2 percent decrease. This referred to the textile, ready-to-wear and accessories markets. SMI provided a scenario, but not detailed figures.
According to data elaborated on the base of companies’ forecasts, the negative trend would continue in the third quarter of the year, with revenues expected to be down 2.4 percent.
Data provided by the Italian National Institute of Statistics pointed that, in the first eight months of the year, the exports of textile and fashion products were up 0.5 percent to 17.5 billion euros, or $ 18.6 billion at current exchange rate, compared to the same period last year. While the total exports toward European countries, mostly Germany and France, rose 2.2 percent, those directed to the extra-European markets were down 1.6 percent. In

Women’s Quest for Economic Equality

Women’s Quest for Economic Equality

It may seem to the casual observer that women have made striking gains in their quest for equality with men since the early 1960s. But have they really improved their lot? Are they really better off economically? In this clear, compact, and controversial book Victor Fuchs makes plain that except for women who are young, white, unmarried, and well educated, today’s women have not gained economically at all relative to men. He shows that although women are earning a lot more, they have much less leisure time than they used to while men have more; the decline of marriage has made women more dependent on their own income, and their share of financial responsibility for children has grown.Scrutinizing this relative lack of progress and the reasons for the persistence of occupational segregation, the infamous wage gap, and the unequal responsibility for housework and childcare, Fuchs shows that the standard explanations?discrimination and exploitation by employers?are not the most important causes. Women’s weaker economic position results primarily from conflicts between career and family, conflicts that are stronger for women than for men. Fuchs assembles many different kinds of evidence to suggest that, on average, women feel a stronger desire for children than men do, and have a greater concern for their welfare after they are born. This desire and concern create an economic disadvantage for women, even women who never marry and never have children.

Fubarnomics: A Lighthearted, Serious Look at America’s Economic Ills

Fubarnomics: A Lighthearted, Serious Look at America’s Economic Ills

FUBAR, an acronym stemming from World War II GI slang, means “fouled up (or some other “F” word) beyond all recognition.” To the author, “fubarnomics” perfectly captures the sorry state of our economy today. In this witty, informative, and nonpartisan overview of contemporary economic ills, Wright takes a fresh approach to public policy by finding fault with both the government and the market, and with both Democrats and Republicans. The author convincingly shows that major economic trouble has almost always been the result of a hybrid failure, a combination of both bad policy making and marketplace deficiencies. He examines contemporary and historical examples of FUBAR across a wide spectrum, from mainstay social institutions such as higher education to cataclysmic national upheavals such as the Great Depression. In analyzing our most current crises, he offers unique insights into the recent crippling recession, including the subprime mortgage meltdown, as well as the looming healthcare crisis, and the perennial problem of social security. Beyond identifying the major problem areas, the author also offers practical solutions. From creating combined life-healthcare insurance policies and divorcing healthcare from employers, to government education subsidies for students only, and using long-term bonds to pay for private insurance that mimics social security, his suggestions are provocative and creative, and may just solve some of the thorniest problems facing us toda

Frieze London Sees Strong Sales, So Far, in an Uneasy Economic Climate

ARTFUL DODGING: Frieze Art, the London contemporary art fair, wrapped up Saturday with sold-out stands and no hint — yet — of cash-strapped collectors or repercussions from the economic slowdown in China. In the third quarter, the country notched its slowest growth in six years.
“A lot of our galleries are experiencing their best Frieze ever,” said Abby Bangster, the artistic director for Frieze Americas and Asia. “I’ve spoken to the galleries that are based in China and are here, and they have completely sold out. It’s not just Chinese buying Chinese, they have big London and American buyers. We also have a good number of Chinese collectors. We so far have not been impacted, but it is certainly something that we’re watching.”
The 13th edition of the four-day fair, held at Regent’s Park in London, saw 164 galleries from 27 countries take part. Galleries showcased works by artists including Camille Henrot; Mary Weatherford; Gabriel Orozco; Abraham Cruzvillegas, and Jimmie Durham.
While Frieze did not disclose the total amount of sales at the fair, it did release some figures from individual galleries. White Cube sold a painting by Damien Hirst for 750,000 pounds, or $ 1.16 million, while a work by Gabriel Orozco sold for $ 900,000 at Kurimanzutto. An oil painting by Chris Ofili

World Trade Law after Neoliberalism: Reimagining the Global Economic Order

World Trade Law after Neoliberalism: Reimagining the Global Economic Order

The rise of economic liberalism in the latter stages of the 20th century coincided with a fundamental transformation of international economic governance, especially through the law of the World Trade Organization. In this book, Andrew Lang provides a new account of this transformation, and
considers its enduring implications for international law. Against the commonly-held idea that ''neoliberal'' policy prescriptions were encoded into WTO law, Lang argues that the last decades of the 20th century saw a reinvention of the international trade regime, and a reconstitution of its internal
structures of knowledge.

In addition, the book explores the way that resistance to economic liberalism was expressed and articulated over the same period in other areas of international law, most prominently international human rights law. It considers the promise and limitations of this form of ''inter-regime'' contestation,
arguing that measures to ensure greater collaboration and cooperation between regimes may fail in their objectives if they are not accompanied by a simultaneous destabilization of each regime''s structures of knowledge and characteristic features. With that in mind, the book contributes to a full and
productive contestation of the nature and purpose of global economic governance.
