Eco-Age Announces Finalists for Emerging Talent Prize

GREEN SHOOTS: Livia Firth’s brand consultancy Eco-Age gathered industry figures, including Italian Chamber of Fashion president Carlo Capasa, entrepreneur Carmen Busquets and British Vogue editor in chief Edward Enninful on the sidelines of Paris Couture Week to select the five finalists of its talent competition for emerging designers.
The 13 jury members met in a makeshift conference room in a stuffy apartment on Tuesday to look at the work of 10 shortlisted designers. The finalists will attend the second edition of The Green Carpet Fashion Awards, to be held on Sept. 23 at La Scala at the end of Milan Fashion Week.
The winner of the Franca Sozzani GCC Emerging Designer Award will have the opportunity to present at Milan Fashion Week in February, supported by the Italian Chamber of Fashion.
In addition, they will benefit from a one-year mentorship program with outlet center operator Value Retail, which earlier this year changed its name to Bicester Village Shopping Collection. Their collections will be featured in The Creative Spot, a platform dedicated to showcase new talents at Fidenza Village, just outside of Milan.
The finalists are Gilberto Calzolari, whose look was created using jute coffee bags from Brazil; Teatum Jones, who created a dress made

Sync Performance Launches ‘Elevate the Athlete’ Project to Enable Shoppers to Support Emerging Athletes

COMPLETE SNOW JOBS: Internationally renowned athletes can really break the bank, as Floyd Mayweather can attest with $ 275 million in salary/winnings and $ 10 million in endorsements.
The quick-footed fighter tops the 2018 Forbes List of The World’s Highest Paid Athletes with Argentina’s leading soccer player Lionel Messi ranking second with $ 84 million and $ 27 million in endorsements.
With a reported $ 4 million in estimated earnings from sponsors like Burton and Beats by Dre, three-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White was the highest-paid male athlete at this year’s Winter Games in PyeongChang. But the sponsored life is more of a challenge for unproven mountain athletes like ski racers, snowboarding and ski jumping even at the elite level. Snowboarder Jamie Anderson, who won two gold medals last winter, personally started pitching potential sponsors at the age of 10. Olympian Brian Fletcher worked part-time in a restaurant, snowboarder Jonathan Cheever punched the clock as a plumber and Ryan Cochran-Siegle worked at his family’s store to help get to this year’s Winter Games. To try to help offset athlete’s expenses — which extend beyond apparel and equipment — the Colorado-based brand Sync Performance has launched its Elevate the Athlete project. Shoppers can direct 10 percent of

What to Watch: How Emerging Streetwear Brands Are Navigating 2018

What’s next for streetwear? Critics of the category say the frenzy — see ComplexCon or the crowds that form around Supreme every week — is unsustainable and unhealthy for the market. Newer brands, meanwhile, believe it’s an ideal time to expand their businesses. Here, three young streetwear brands detail how they will approach the year and what they believe is in the pipeline for the category.

Guillermo Andrade opened his Los Angeles concept store, FourTwoFour, which is located on Fairfax, in 2010. He sold pieces from Fear of God along with more established firms such as Rick Owens and Thom Browne. By 2014, Andrade started his own line, 424, that’s been picked up by retailers including Barneys New York and SSENSE.
WWD: What do you think about the current state of streetwear?
Guillermo Andrade: It seems to me that it is very positive. The amount of opportunity out there for a young brand like mine is exponential.
WWD: How do you plan on navigating the industry in 2018?
G.A.: Amongst the sea of hype and all the noise around hot brands, there is one thing that cannot be forgotten and that is product is king. I will continue to focus

Trend Union’s Li Edelkoort: Goddesses Are Emerging Female Archetypes in Fashion

DRAPED CRUSADERS: As the social message of women’s empowerment continues to gain ground, goddess-like strength and traits are turning up in fashion.
Goddesses of all different heritages and persuasions were the focus of Li Edelkoort’s spring 2019 presentation for Trend Union at The New School in New York. The way she sees it, they are at the root of the emerging female fashion archetype for the industry with individuals determining their own goddess based on individual tastes. Predicting a revolution sparked partially from draping, folding and cuts, Edelkort expects normcore and streetwear basics to dissolve. That shift calls for “designers, not influencers,” she said.
With a myriad of colorful images that drew from art history, fashion, portraiture and nature, the trend forecaster offered a crash course in goddesses. Students and industry types learned of Aphrodite, Demeter, Hestia, Gaia, Flora & Fauna, Nike and others. Edelkoort also pointed to the increasing importance of the sack dress, regal colors and majestic fabrics. She also spoke of “this child woman” who is very dominant in society, accumulating jobs as if she is accumulating pairs of shoes. “She lives her life like a ribbon, like a bracelet — there is not a clear direction. She is

Google Partners With Emerging Artists to Design Pixel 2 Cases

Google has a very long and varied partner list, including Wal-Mart, Harvard Medical School and every major beauty influencer on YouTube. Over the past year, the tech giant has added more artists and designers, thanks to Google Artworks Series collaborations with Jeff Koons, Jeremy Scott, Opening Ceremony, FriendsWithYou and Skrillex, among others.
Today, two more officially join the ranks: The company worked with Los Angeles-based digital artist Petra Cortright and graphic artist Baron Von Fancy from New York on customizable Google Artworks Live Cases for its new Pixel 2 smartphone.
Emerging and influential artists, Cortright and Von Fancy each created a series of limited-edition digital canvases, giving the public access to their work in a convenient and affordable way. Customers can print the canvases for their cases or download the wallpapers for their homescreens from the Google store for $ 40.
Cortright’s digital canvasses showcase her signature impressionistic digital landscapes, formed from computer-rendered marks and strokes. “For my work, I source images from the Internet, and Google Images has always played a huge role in finding material,” Cortright said. “I thought it was kind of cool that this project would allow for my work to come full circle.”
The artist also conveyed her appreciation for

Emerging Designers Grab Spotlight at On|Off

SPACE ODYSSEY: On|Off, the London-based showcase that helped kick-start the careers of J.W. Anderson and Peter Pilotto, among others, took over London’s Oxo Tower on Friday to introduce three new designers: Luke Anthony Rooney, Jack Irving and Timothy Bouyez-Forge.
Taking cues from Rosalind Russell, the feisty, fashionable reporter who played opposite Cary Grant in the 1940 screwball comedy, “His Girl Friday,” Rooney offered a lovely wardrobe that oscillated between breezy weekend dressing and crisp workwear, in line with Russell’s character.
To wit, he paired a striped knitted sweater with a wonderfully light, silky slipdress and conjured a jumpsuit from a textured wool fabric donated to him by Christian Lacroix.
The group show quickly turned conceptual with Irving’s “army of alien showgirls,” as he called them. Cue corsets sculpted from plastic shards and matching headwear and zippy, sequined stretch bodysuits with inflatable spikes protruding from the back like a giant cosmic porcupine.
“I’m only 23,” Irving offered apologetically, “I don’t want to wash it down. I want to be more of an artist than a fashion designer,” he said. One could only picture Lady Gaga — an avid Irving supporter — sporting one of these.
Bouyez-Forge offered his take on inter-galactic street dressing. The spirited lineup featured handsomely distorted silhouettes done in

Socio-Economic Insecurity in Emerging Economies

Socio-Economic Insecurity in Emerging Economies

Taking a unique comparative approach to the respective development paths of India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA), this book shows that people and governments in all three countries are faced with similar challenges of heightened insecurity, caused by liberalization and structural adjustment. The ways in which governments, as well as individuals and worker organisations in IBSA have responded to these challenges are at the core of this book. The book explores the nature of insecurity in the Global South; the nature of the responses to this insecurity on public and small-scale collective as well as individual level; the potential of these responses to be more than neo-liberal mechanisms to govern and contain the poor and lessons to be learnt from these three countries. The first section covers livelihood strategies in urban and rural areas as individual and small-scale collective response to the condition of insecurity. Insecurity in the countries of the South is characterised by a high degree of uncertainty of the availability of income opportunities. The second section looks at state responses to insecurity and contributions on social protection measures taken by the respective IBSA governments. The third section discusses whether alternative development paths can be identified. The aim is to move beyond ‘denunciatory analysis.’ Livelihood strategies as well as public policies in some of the cases allow for the building of new spaces for agency and contestation of a neo-liberal mainstream which provide emerging and experimental examples. The book develops new thinking on Northern welfare states and their declining trade unions. It argues that these concepts, knowledge and policy innovations are now travelling in three directions, from North to South, from South to North, and between Southern countries. This book provides unique insights for researchers and postgraduate students in development studies, social policy and industrial sociology.

Emerging Drugs and Targets for Parkinson’s Disease

Emerging Drugs and Targets for Parkinson’s Disease

Affecting over 1.5 million people across the world, Parkinsons disease is a progressive neurological condition characterized, in part, by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. It affects 1.5% of the global population over 65 years of age. As life expectancy is increasing, over the next few years the number of patients with Parkinsons disease will grow exponentially. To date, there are no available treatments that are capable of curing Parkinsons disease, and the current goal of therapy, dopamine replacement strategies, is to reduce symptoms. After several years of disease progression, treatment is complicated by the onset of motor fluctuations and dyskinesias. This information reveals the great importance and social need of finding an effective therapeutic intervention for Parkinsons disease. This exemplary new book reviews some of the most outstanding examples of new drugs currently in pharmaceutical development or new targets currently undergoing the validation process to try to reach the Parkinsons drug market in the next few years as potential disease modifying drugs. Providing up to date and comprehensive coverage, this book will be essential reading for researchers working in academia and industry in any aspect of medicinal chemistry or drug discovery.
