The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture

The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture

This volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture examines how mass media have shaped popular perceptions of the South-and how the South has shaped the history of mass media. An introductory overview by Allison Graham and Sharon Monteith is followed by 40 thematic essays and 132 topical articles that examine major trends and seminal moments in film, television, radio, press, and Internet history. Among topics explored are the southern media boom, beginning with the Christian Broadcast Network and CNN; popular movies, television shows, and periodicals that have shaped ideas about the region, including Gone with the Wind, The Beverly Hillbillies, Roots, and Southern Living; and southern media celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Truman Capote, and Stephen Colbert. The volume details the media’s involvement in southern history, from depictions of race in the movies to news coverage of the civil rights movement and Hurricane Katrina. Taken together, these entries reveal and comment on the ways in which mass media have influenced, maintained, and changed the idea of a culturally unique South.

Encyclopedia of Cold War Espionage, Spies, and Secret Operations

Encyclopedia of Cold War Espionage, Spies, and Secret Operations

The cold war officially lasted from 1945 to 1991; however, many operations and individual spies often are found beyond these dates, with some previously unknown operations and names having surfaced only recently. Based on all the latest research, the core part of the book consists of over 330 individual entries that include biographical accounts of the lives and operations the individual spies and secret agents took part in. In support of the entries, the book provides important useful tools: a complete chronology of significant espionage activities; a glossary of key terms and figures providing additional background to the entries; references to other sources, either in print or electronic formats; and extensive cross-references for all entries. Reaching as far back as 1917 and the Soviet seizure of power in Russia, Encyclopedia of Cold War Espionage, Spies, and Secret Operations covers the entire range of Soviet Bloc and Western espionage. The book explores in depth the critical cold war years, 1945-1991, alongside all the extended ramifications of espionage, up to the spies and operations most recently unveiled. The bulk of the entries centers on the cold war conflict of the United States and NATO-allied countries against the USSR and Communist China, though many other countries were involved in cold war espionage operations as well. Selected fictional characters and operations created by John LeCarré, Ian Fleming, and Robert Littell are also included in a separate section due to the image, accurate or imaginary, of the intelligence operative that was either reviled by the professionals or enthusiastically embraced by the general public.

Encyclopedia of Agrophysics

Encyclopedia of Agrophysics

This Encyclopedia of Agrophysics will provide up-to-date information on the physical properties and processes affecting the quality of the environment and plant production. It will be a “first-up” volume which will nicely complement the recently published Encyclopedia of Soil Science, (November 2007) which was published in the same series. In a single authoritative volume a collection of about 250 informative articles and ca 400 glossary terms covering all aspects of agrophysics will be presented. The authors will be renowned specialists in various aspects in agrophysics from a wide variety of countries. Agrophysics is important both for research and practical use not only in agriculture, but also in areas like environmental science, land reclamation, food processing etc. Agrophysics is a relatively new interdisciplinary field closely related to Agrochemistry, Agrobiology, Agroclimatology and Agroecology. Nowadays it has been fully accepted as an agricultural and environmental discipline. As such this Encyclopedia volume will be an indispensable working tool for scientists and practitioners from different disciplines, like agriculture, soil science, geosciences, environmental science, geography, and engineering.

Encyclopedia of Rural Sports V2

Encyclopedia of Rural Sports V2

And The Various Rural Games And Amusements Of Great Britain And America. The full title of this work is Encyclopedia of Rural Sports: Consisting of Shooting, Hunting, Coursing, Fishing, Boating, Racing, Pedestrianism, Cricket, Base Ball, &c. and the Various Games and Amusements of Great Britain and America. Reproduced here in facsimile is the first American edition, which was published by Porter and Coates, Philadelphia, and which is an expansion of the British edition. In his Introduction, Walsh broadly defines “rural sports” as inclusive of nearly all outdoor pastimes. Perplexingly little can be learned about J. H. Walsh and his voluminous compendium. He is conspicuously absent from the British Dictionary of National Biography and other major references. Nor is the Encyclopedia … noted in John C. Phillips’ comprehensive American Game Mammals and Birds, A Catalogue of Books, 1582 to 1925, Sport, Natural History, and Conservation (1930). We do know that Walsh was English, that he lived from 1810 to 1888, and was bewilderingly knowledgeable about English outdoor sports, many of which he was proficient in, during the 19th century. His work, astonishing in scope and detail, is equally enigmatic.–Henry M. Reeves.
