‘Spider-Man’ Producer Uses Perfect Word To Explain Why The Cast Is So Diverse

With a great “Spider-Man” movie comes a greatly diverse cast.

Marvel and Sony’s new spin on the story, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” includes actors from all different backgrounds, ethnicities and ages taking on pivotal roles. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon play Spider-Man’s friends, Laura Harrier is his love interest, and Marisa Tomei plays a younger version of Aunt May.

Everyone seems flipped around in one way or another, and the actors are into it.

At the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” press conference in New York on Sunday, Latino actor Tony Revolori thanked producers for giving him the role of Flash Thompson, which is traditionally a white character.

“Thank you to Jon [Watts], Amy [Pascal] and Kevin [Feige] for casting a 5-foot-8 brown guy to play a 6-foot-2 blond, blue-eyed guy,” said the actor.

The actors and producers of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” were asked about the inspiration behind the casting during the press conference, and producer Amy Pascal stepped up and dropped the mic.

“I would say the inspiration for it was reality,” said Pascal.

Yup. Reality.

The response was met with applause and “amens” from the cast and audience.

It appears everyone in production was on the same page from the beginning. Director Jon Watts previously addressed the diversity topic, similarly telling The Daily Beast:

Peter Parker goes to high school in Queens, and Queens is one of ― if not the ― most diverse places in the world. So I just wanted it to reflect what that actually looks like.

By looking at the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” cast, it’s clear this is not the same old “Spider-Man” movie we’ve become accustomed to. This is something better, and it has the positive social media reviews — and will likely get the box-office numbers — to prove it.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” swings into theaters July 7.

7 Doodles That Explain Why Introverts Act The Way They Do

Introverts interact with the world differently.

While extroverts get an energy boost from chatting with friends at a party, for example, the same experience drains an introvert’s internal battery and makes him feel like he needs a rest.

If you’re an introvert yourself, it can be difficult to feel like these tendencies are understood. Not to worry; illustrator Debbie Tung of Where’s My Bubble? breaks down your M.O. in these delightfully simple doodles:

Chrissy Teigen And John Legend Finally Explain That Obama Sex Thing

God bless Andy Cohen for finally getting John Legend and Chrissy Teigen to explain the connection between Obama and their sex life.

Last year, the two were walking a red carpet and asked by Extra about the “most public place” they’ve ever done it. Never one to hold back, Teigen simply replied, “Probably the Obama thing” before laughing and leaving a shocked and speechless Legend by himself.

When the couple stopped by “Watch What Happens Live” on Wednesday, Cohen asked them to describe that “Obama thing.”

“It wasn’t at the White House, to be clear,” Legend said. “It was at a campaign event that we happened to be at.”

Legend and Teigen revealed that the encounter took place in a bathroom, though they couldn’t agree if it was a public or private.

When the Bravo host tried to compliment the couple on their amazing sex life ― especially after being together for nearly a decade ― Legend and Teigen chimed with a hilariously self-deprecating response.

“This was 2008, by the way ― let’s not get 10 years of credit,” the singer said to laughs, while Chrissy added, “This was a long time ago.”

Watch them dish about their recent hookups (cough, Fred Segal, cough) in the clip above.

Ken Burns Explain Why the Real Jackie Robinson Was the Most Important Baseball Player Ever

Ken Burns agrees that we can’t remember Jackie Robinson enough. He just wants us to remember the real Jackie Robinson.

So he’s taken the Robinson segment of his Emmy-winning 1994 Baseball series and expanded it into a four-hour documentary on the life of the man who 69 years ago this month integrated Major League Baseball.

2016-04-10-1460306700-9801350-jackie4.jpg

Jackie Robinson airs Monday and Tuesday, 9-11 p.m. ET, on PBS.

Burns says it’s the least he can do.

“Jackie Robinson was the most important player in the history of Major League Baseball,” says Burns. “Maybe not the best, but the most important.”

Baseball itself honors Robinson in a number of ways. With the retirement of Yankees’ reliever Mariano Rivera, no player on any team will again wear 42, the number Robinson wore for nine seasons with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The only danger, says Burns, is that in enshrining an iconic figure, we could forget who Robinson really was, and how he really lived his life on and off the field.

Jackie Robinson focuses on how involved and active a life he led, before, during and after his baseball career.

Robinson grew up in the Jim Crow West, Pasadena, Calif., and he spent his life fighting to erase the corrosive effect of racial discrimination.

In the process he didn’t always make friends and he didn’t always serve his own health well. He was 53 when he died.

“In the mythic view,” says Burns, “Jackie Robinson was able to integrate baseball because he agreed not to fight back – to ignore the racist taunts and behavior.

“For his first three years – one with the Triple-A Montreal farm team and two with the Dodgers – he did that. It was a remarkable achievement.

“But that wasn’t the real Jackie. Once he completed that agreement with [Dodgers president] Branch Rickey, you saw a very different person. He argued with umpires, he spoke out to his teammates, he told the press what he was really thinking.”

2016-04-10-1460306772-5928488-jackie1.jpg

The unchained Jackie emerged in the 1949 season, Burns notes, “and 1949 was the best year of his career. He had his best statistics and he won the National League Most Valuable Player award.”

Jackie Robinson features footage of Robinson arguing with umpires, who he suspected sometimes tended not to let close calls go his way. It notes that his outspokenness at times led to negative press from writers who had admired the more reserved Robinson of his first two seasons – the one who, by implication, knew his place.

The documentary also notes some of the other realities of baseball’s early integration, like the fact that Robinson often couldn’t stay with his team at Southern hotels or eat in the same restaurants.

Inside the Dodgers’ clubhouse, Robinson was often isolated. While not all his teammates openly shunned him, like outfielder Dixie Walker, Burns says he found no evidence to support the famous feel-good story about teammate Pee Wee Reese publicly embracing him on the field after a torrent of racist taunts in Cincinnati.

“It’s a great story,” says Burns. “There’s a statue in New York commemorating it, and we know Pee Wee supported Jackie. We just couldn’t find any evidence that specific incident really happened.

“Robinson presented a dilemma to his teammates. Carl Erskine remembers going back home to Indiana in the off-season and having people ask,’Do you take showers with him?’ “

Robinson could also create dilemmas for those who admired him, which happened when he began working with New York’s Republican Gov. Nelson Rockefeller.

The Republican party had a far more influential moderate and liberal wing then, Burns notes, but when Robinson also embraced the candidacy of Richard Nixon, he heard accusations of selling out.

He eventually broke with Nixon, but as the 1960s Civil Rights movement became more aggressive, Robinson was seen by some as a vestige of an earlier day.

All this “wore on him,” Burns says, “but to his credit, he never stopped speaking out. From the time he signed with the Dodgers he was a public figure. He knew that and he accepted it. He never stopped fighting.”

2016-04-10-1460306840-2361858-jackie2.jpg

Accepting a ceremonial honor at a baseball park one night after his retirement, he remarked that the honor would mean more if he could look out over the field and see black faces in coaching and management positions.

In a way, Burns suggests, history’s challenge with Robinson is the same one it faces with Dr. Martin Luther King.

Because of King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, he often is portrayed as a sort of abstract feel-good moral idealist, when in reality he spent much of his life in the trenches and some of it in jail.

Burns further suggests that President Barack Obama has in some ways been “our version of Jackie Robinson” – someone who, for all his skills and qualifications, still has to convince a lot of people that he belongs in the position to which he ascended.

Nor is that the only link Burns sees. “Barack Obama would never have become President without Jackie Robinson,” he says. “Jackie opened that door.”

So yes, Burns thinks the country is moving in the right direction. Just taking a long time to get there.

“You see progress,” he says. “From 1619, when the first slaves were brought here, to 1863, when slavery was abolished. Then to 1965 with the Civil Rights Act. But progress engenders resistance. We see that today.”

2016-04-10-1460306895-658158-jackie3.jpg

Jackie Robinson saw it, too, and Burns argues that the more we humanize him, the better we can appreciate how hard and well he fought it, on and off the baseball diamond.

3 Cute Country Singers Explain Why Guys Love Girls in T-Shirts and Jeans

When it comes to go-to outfits, there’s not much better than a favorite pair of jeans and a basic T-shirt. It’s comfortable, easy to dress up or down, and works on every body shape, tall or short, curvy or willowy. It also happens to be a guy magnet, with men everywhere routinely saying it’s their very favorite look to see on a girl (forget a sexy body-con dress). To figure out just what makes the simple style so appealing—and in in the spirit of last night’s CMA Awards—we asked a few hot country singers to spill.

“I like girls that don’t try too hard,” Canaan Smith told us in between stops on his current tour. “There is something about a t-shirt hanging off her shoulder that will never not be sexy.” (Psst—get to know him better: he he let Glamour in on a day in his country-cool life).

The classic outfit spelled love and creative success for Ryan Michaels, who’s half of country duo Haley & Michaels with new bride Shannon (they were married this May and, yup, her walk down the aisle was to a song they wrote together just for the occasion).

“When I met Shannon, she was wearing jeans and a James Taylor T-shirt, which totally rocked,” he remembered. “I’ve always thought it showed confidence to be understated. To me, girls are always sexier when they’re not trying too hard.”

“Maybe it’s just the country boy in me, but I’ll take jeans and a T-shirt on a girl any day,” singer Cole Swindell echoed (his first-ever headlining tour kicks off this month, confirming he’s pretty much becoming a big deal). “I think it shows a laid-back chill side, and that’s sexy to me.”

Three makes a trend, y’all. It appears safe to say that the universal, time-tested appeal of a woman wearing jeans and a t-shirt is that it’s easy (why we love wearing the look!). There’s still something warm-and-fuzzy special about getting a glowing response when you’ve put time into a big night, getting ready and picking out a special dress, but when it’s all said and done, the most magical style moment might just happen when we’re dressed down.

Beauty Matters and 7 Drawings That Help Explain Why

When our children were younger, my husband and I had date night on Sundays. If I was feeling emotional and didn’t know why, I would take a drawing pad and colorful pens with me to dinner. In the restaurant, I would draw stick figures to express myself to my husband. I’m joyful about X, upset about Y, conflicted about A, B and C and so on. To his credit, he listened and smiled while I drew. This is when I first learned that I could say a lot with stick figures.

These days, I’m still using drawings to process emotions and counsel myself. Recently, when I sat down with pen in hand, I found that I was writing notes to myself about beauty. My stick figures were giving me messages about the importance of seeing and cherishing beauty in the world.

By beauty I mean the physical, “holy smokes can you really believe that a moon rise can be that seriously sacred and serene?” I also mean the beauty of human interactions. I was at an outdoor free yoga class on Saturday to celebrate the summer solstice and I watched a mother and her 4-year-old son practicing yoga together. He copied every move she made. When he laughed, she smiled — the mom was upside down, the son was upside down, but the world was right side up.

Beauty can be tiny, specific interactions and as wide ranging as sounds: tastes, touches, a thought, a prayer, a silence, a gong, a gesture, an action. Beauty is everywhere, and here’s what I’ve decided based on the messages my stick figures have been offering me: I don’t ask myself often enough to notice beauty and soak it in.

It seems I’m good at going over and over in my mind when someone has hurt my feelings. (I have drawings to prove it. With the stroke of a pen, I can draw piles of cow pies on the offending party’s head.) I am also capable of not being able to draw. Some news hits me like an 18-wheeler and I’m left flattened at how horrible humans can be to each other. “Retreat! Retreat!” my inner intercom system says.

But when I do crawl out from wherever it is I go, and I start to draw, the pictures tell me what it is I must do. I’d like to share some of these drawings with you.

First note to self: When horrible things happen in the world, I want to block my ears and cover my eyes, but the best thing I can do is to go out into the world and be kind. Any act of kindness is beautiful.

2014-06-24-horrible_pic.png

Second note to self: Sometimes I miss the beauty of a moment because I’m listening to brain noise: sorrow, fear and worry. Note to self: Pay attention. Beauty is everywhere.

2014-06-24-brainnoise_pic.png

Third note to self: Try really, really hard NOT to step on beauty. Beauty matters.

2014-06-24-dontsteponbty_pic.png

Fourth note to self: When my heart breaks, it’s best to fill the broken places with beauty.

2014-06-24-heartbrks_pic.png

Fifth note to self: Let the simple beauty of a flower make your day.

2014-06-24-flowerbty_pic.png

Sixth note to self: Some days it’s important to hold onto beauty with all that you’ve got.

2014-06-24-holdonto_pic.png

Seventh note to self: Life’s goal: Let go and smile.

2014-06-24-Lifes_goal_pic.png

I included the last picture, because every smile is beautiful and easy to share with anyone at any time.

I’d love to hear from you on what beauty fills your soul.
