PEOPLE Explains: Jessica Chambers’ Alleged Murderer Goes on Trial Again

The murder still startles with its brutality.

On a back road of Courtland, Mississippi, after sundown on Dec. 6, 2014, someone splashed an accelerant on Jessica Chambers and set both her and her black 2005 Kia Rio aflame. The 19-year-old former high school cheerleader, who was then working at a local department store, died hours after authorities discovered her walking near the vehicle with burns over 98 percent of her body.

Among her final words were those presumed to identify her attacker.

After months of investigation, prosecutors built their case against Quinton Tellis, now 29, a recent acquaintance of Chambers who had grown up in her neighborhood and attended her same high school years earlier.

The prosecution claimed phone records placed the two together before Chambers died and Tellis had admitted to police that they were together that day.

In alleging a motive, authorities said recovered text messages between the two showed that on the day she was attacked, Chambers had rejected Tellis’ requests for sex four times, reported TV station WMC.

In court last year, prosecutor John Champion argued that Tellis and Chambers eventually had sex that December night, after which he tried to suffocate her before setting her and her vehicle on fire, believing she was already dead.

But jurors who weighed the allegations — including the claim that several first-responders heard Chambers utter a name that sounded like “Eric” or “Derek,” neither of which fit the accused — were divided over guilt or innocence when Tellis was tried for capital murder last fall.

With the jury unable to reach a verdict, the judge declared a mistrial.

Tellis will go back on trial on Sept. 24 in a courtroom in Batesville, Mississippi, where the first trial unfolded 11 months ago.

He has maintained his innocence.

As the retrial moves forward, the identity of “Eric” has remained front and center.

Circuit Judge Gerald Chatham cleared Champion, the local district attorney, of misconduct after he was accused by the defense of coaching a potential witness to say that Chambers called Tellis by that name, according to the Commercial Appeal. Defense attorney Darla Palmer has appealed that decision.

If convicted of murder in the Chambers case, Tellis faces life in prison without parole.

The grisly mystery of who attacked the teenager lasted for more than a year — underscoring anxieties about a killer possibly hiding in the community and drawing scrutiny to the rough crowd with whom Chambers spent time, as local drug dealers and her exes were questioned.

Among the national headlines the case made was a PEOPLE cover story in January 2016.

After an extensive investigation, Tellis was indicted in February 2016. Authorities had zeroed in on the phone records that they alleged placed him with Chambers at the approximate time of her attack, with Tellis’ DNA on her car keys.

Defense attorney Palmer reportedly said Tellis was several miles away at a store purchasing a pre-paid debit card. She further argued that Chambers’ apparent identification of her attacker as “Eric” cleared her client, because neither Chambers nor the person who had introduced her and Tellis knew Tellis by that name, according to the Clarion-Ledger.

In turn, the prosecution called burn expert Dr. William Hickerson, who testified that injuries to Chambers’ mouth and tongue were so severe that she likely would not have been able to pronounce words correctly. (Chambers was unable to provide responders with more than a first name.)

Even so, the district attorney told jurors that investigators had considered and ruled out several Erics and Dereks before charges were filed against Tellis, whom authorities have described as a “habitual” criminal offender and who is accused in an unrelated killing in Louisiana.

The conclusion of his first trial last October had its own drama, as the jury initially filed into the courtroom to announce its verdict only to be short-circuited by one juror who said the unannounced decision was not unanimous, as required.

Judge Chatham, who oversaw that trial and will preside over the retrial, then sent the jurors back for further deliberations — and when they returned a second time, a verdict of not-guilty was announced.

But when Chatham polled jurors individually, several said they had voted “guilty.”

That led the judge to send the divided panel back a second time for further deliberations, and then again a third time, before he acknowledged they were “hopelessly deadlocked.”

Prosecutors quickly announced their intention to retry Tellis, who did not take the stand in his defense.

During police questioning, prosecutor Champion said, Tellis repeatedly changed his account of his whereabouts and activities on the day Chambers was attacked. Prosecutors further alleged that Tellis deleted all evidence of Chambers from his phone to distance himself from her.

“She had a life full of tomorrows, and she had every right to wake up on the morning of Dec. 7, 2014,” Champion said during his closing argument in the first trial. “Now, three years later, she’d be 22. Would she be married? Would she have kids? That was all taken away from her at 8:04 p.m. on Dec. 6, 2014.”

Tellis currently sits in a Mississippi state prison serving a five-year sentence after an unrelated conviction for burglarizing an unoccupied dwelling, jail records show.

He also is facing a murder charge in Louisiana, where authorities suspect he killed Meing-Chen Hsiao, a 34-year-old former Taiwanese exchange student found dead in August 2015 with multiple stab wounds, defensive wounds and slicing wounds in her upper back.

Tellis has pleaded not guilty in that case, which is pending the outcome of his trial in Chambers’ death.

Mark Hamill Explains Why He Rode a Wheelchair Through New York Airport

Mark Hamill has responded to worried fans on social media after he was spotted in a wheelchair at a New York airport on Tuesday.

Replying to a fan who asked if he was having health problems, the Star Wars actor wrote that he “tried the old ‘wheelchair trick’” to avoid autograph dealers “who constantly badger” him and his family.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Arriving to the airport at 5 a.m., Hamill was spotted slouched in a wheelchair with a wide brimmed hat pulled low over his face. He was also carrying his dog on his lap.

Hamill celebrated the pup’s birthday later on Twitter, writing, “We arrived in NYC just in time for the 6th birthday of none other than Millie Grace Hamill! Beloved family pet, world traveler & trusted career advisor.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The actor seemed to be in good health during an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show Tuesday, where he spoke about the death of his Star Wars costar Carrie Fisher.

“She’s like an irreplaceable member of the family, but the whole world feels that way,” Hamill said of Fisher, who died last December at the age of 60. “We are all sort of mourning her. I always think of her in the present tense. I don’t think of her in the past. Any time you were with her it was just fun.”

Hamill also seemed to be healthy and in good spirits while surprising guests at Disneyland just two weeks ago. The actor popped up on the new ride, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, and chatted with fans.

Hamill reprises his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, hitting theaters Dec. 15.

In Vintage Clip, RuPaul Explains How He Became A Drag Queen ‘By Accident’

RuPaul may be one of the country’s best known drag queens, but the show biz veteran has said that drag wasn’t always in the plans when he envisioned his path to stardom.

It’s a point RuPaul made more than 20 years ago when he appeared as a guest on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1995. While he’d fully embraced his uniqueness, RuPaul had assumed he would follow a well-trodden path to fame when he was young ― through the mainstream media.

“I always wanted to be a star ever since I was a little drag queen growing up in Georgia,” he told Oprah back then.

So, RuPaul began taking acting classes. Then, when he was 21, the budding entertainer wrote into a public access variety show. Appearing on free-spirited “The American Music Show” was RuPaul’s television debut, and he was hooked. Emerging on the drag scene, however, still wasn’t top of mind at the time.

“The drag thing, so, it really happened by accident,” RuPaul said. “I was doing punk and I’d had a mohawk and I’d play with makeup and stuff. Then, some people on a lark said, ‘Why don’t you do drag and see what it looks like?’”

As RuPaul quickly discovered, switching from his punk rock style to drag-queen glam drew rave reviews. “Honey. The reaction I got from people was amazing,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it!”

As RuPaul experimented with his identity, he found not just success ― he’s the charismatic host of the award-winning “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” after all ― but he also found more of himself.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said of dressing in drag. “I think everybody ought to get in some type of drag… It brings out different aspects of your personality. And I think when you’re on this planet, in this lifetime, it’s important to try different things. Life is a banquet and most people are starving to death.”

Mom Explains How Giving Birth Helped Her Learn To Love Her Body

A California mom’s side-by-side photos show how much she’s changed in 10 years ― and how much she’s learned to love her body.

Lindsay Wolf, an actress and writer, shared two side-by-side photos on Instagram on June 5. The first photo shows her at 23 years old, and in the caption, Wolf wrote that she was self-conscious then and “critical of her physical shape.” The second photo shows her at 33. Wolf wrote that the pic captures a “woman who is learning to love her body without pressuring it to be anything other than what it is.”

“And in the process, she is healing a lifelong struggle of never fully seeing herself for the extraordinary human being she is,” she wrote.

Wolf, who has an 11-year-old stepdaughter and a 19-month-old daughter, told HuffPost she felt motivated to share the post because her journey to completely loving her body has been “20 years in the making.” After she gave birth, she wasn’t actively attempting to make herself smaller for the first time in her life, which marked an incredible turning point for the way she viewed her body.

“It took becoming pregnant and watching my body support a baby, along with a weight gain of almost 50 pounds over the course of 20 years, to realize that my body is just right exactly as it is,” she told HuffPost.

Wolf said a photo her husband took immediately after she gave birth reflects the pride and appreciation she had learned to have for her body.

“I’m grinning from ear to ear at him in the photo, because while my body looks vastly different than it ever has before, I was basking in the immediate pride of my body doing something truly magical,” she said. “This body of mine held and grew and pushed out my incredible daughter.”

Through her post, Wolf hopes other women learn to embrace their bodies, especially moms after they’ve given birth. She pointed out how many moms are encouraged to erase their pregnancies from their bodies as soon as they welcome their babies.

“It’s funny ― women are cherished while in their pregnant bodies. We are constantly told things like, ‘You’re glowing!’ and how beautiful we are in the state of pregnancy,” she told HuffPost. “But it seems like as soon as we’ve transitioned into full motherhood mode, the appreciation for what our bodies continue to be capable of ― and how they look ― goes completely away.”

Though she’s focusing on moving forward, Wolf said if she could go back and tell her 23-year-old self anything, she’d tell her she is “so much more than her physical body.” She’d also tell her that one day she would learn to love herself unconditionally despite the harmful things she heard and damaging pressures she faced growing up.

“Most importantly, I’d tell her that she couldn’t control how others viewed and commented on her body growing up and that those destructive words slung at her body had nothing to do with her and everything to do with how little we are taught to love ourselves,” she said. “But it is now her responsibility to love herself as fiercely as she can.”

Stephen Colbert Explains Donald Trump’s Most Frustrating Contradiction

Much of America watched former FBI Director James Comey testify in front of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on Thursday. Nielsen Media reported around 19.5 million watched on television, but millions more streamed the testimony online since it took place during the typical work day.

President Donald Trump was among those watching ― and he soon publicly addressed the various accusations Comey leveled against him.

“Comey was pretty rough on the president,” Stephen Colbert said “The Late Show” Friday night. “But right after the testimony, Trump sent his longtime personal lawyer and devil who has a thing he wants you to sign, Marc Kasowitz to respond.”

The host played a clip of the lawyer claiming that Comey’s testimony vindicated Trump, because in Kasowitz’s words, the former FBI director confirmed publicly what he had told Trump privately. This referred to Trump’s insistence that Comey had told him that he was not under investigation by the FBI.

As a quick refresher into this confusing mess: It is true that when Trump asked Comey whether he was personally under investigation, he was not. But Trump associates were under investigation and Comey’s testimony on Thursday indicated that Trump may be facing an investigation into whether the president obstructed justice.

This is where Kasowitz began an extremely frustrating contradiction, as Colbert explained.

But even though, everything Comey said proved Trump wasn’t guilty, he was also a liar?
Stephen Colbert

“But even though, everything Comey said proved Trump wasn’t guilty, he was also a liar?” Colbert said.

He then played another part of the Kasowitz clip where the lawyer detailed the various ways Comey had allegedly lied during the testimony.

This bizarre argument tracked with what the president later tweeted.

During his testimony, Comey also called Trump a liar on multiple occasions.

It’s a classic he said, he said (American politics still being dominated by men, of course).

Now you’ve got to choose whether to believe the “Twin Peaks” character Agent Dale Cooper incarnate in Comey or… well… the apparent “liar in chief.”

Robin Wright’s Stylist Explains the Star’s Cannes Film Festival Fashion — Including Her No-Bra Look!

Robin Wright is the epitome of flawless right now at Cannes Film Festival.

The 51-year-old hit the festival in the south of France this week to promote The Dark of Night, a short film she directed. So far, she has attended a handful events with her fashion-forward style in full force — like this braless slip dress look above — which is why we caught up with her stylist Kemal Harris to get all the details on how she picked her ensembles.

“Cannes is a very traditional event but it takes place in a very bohemian, romantic, vacation-style location, so I tried to align the looks with that energy,” Harris tells PeopleStyle. (Harris also dresses Wright for her gig as Claire Underwood on House of Cards.)

First up, she went to the Opening Gala Dinner in this sheer deep-V look with plain black pumps. “Effortless, sexy and strong outfits” were the goal, notes Harris.

RELATED VIDEO: Robin Wright Fights for Equal Pay on the Set of House of Cards

Then, she hit the premiere of Ismael’s Ghosts in a Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello mini. “I loved the contrast of the sharp, tailored shoulders with the stone-encrusted fabric,” says Harris. “Sexy meets strong!”

Then she attended the Women in Motion event in a Stella McCartney suit. “I’m a huge fan of Stella’s tailoring and thought a suit would be a nice way to break up the dress story,” explains Harris. “I flipped the cuffs of the jacket and pants to show a bit more skin and added the leopard Schutz heels to keep it feminine.” (And you can get the shoes — they’re $ 170 on schutz-shoes.com.)

And, finally, what inspired the supersexy green slip dress by Los Angeles designer Michelle Mason for the Loveless premiere. “I loved its vintage feel but the fabric and fit is totally modern,” says Harris. “The jewel tone of the green inspired me to accent with the raspberry Stuart Weitzman heels and the royal blue velvet Hayward clutch. I topped it off with the Cartier Panthere bracelet because its green emerald eyes matched the dress.”

While this look is incredible body-conscious, it’s also “the most comfortable dress there is because it’s unstructured and the fabric is very light,” says Harris.

Though, she has one stipulation — you have to feel good enough to go braless, as Wright did. “You must have a confident attitude to wear a backless version — it means no bra,” says Harris. “I would also recommend seamless underwear by Commando or Calvin Klein.”

Tell us: What do you think of Robin’s red carpet looks?

Helena Christensen Explains How to Wear a Cape

Helena Christensen was in her element on Thursday night.
“I love capes. I’m obsessed with capes,” said the model, flitting through the intimate rooms of the Moda Operandi Madison outpost in New York. “I actually have a nice little, tiny collection of vintage capes. And I recognize a lot of the design and style in some of these — the embroidery, the lace.”
She’d come to the Upper East Side town house to check out Burberry’s “The Cape Reimagined” exhibit, inspired by British artist Henry Moore. The couture pieces had been reimagined in various ways: through feathers, furs, even pieces of ceramic. Each style was for sale exclusively through the retailer, and — if the price or buyer is right — were one-of-a-kind.
Various friends-of-the-brand made their way out for the celebratory event — Georgia Fowler, Riley Montana, Leigh Lezark, Poppy Jamie, Amber Anderson — and while all were dressed in Burberry, none were cloaked in the style of the evening.
“Capes are not always the easiest to wear,” Christensen admitted. “If you wear something that’s fitted, then it’s actually beautiful, because [a cape] breaks the whole contour. I like when things are not too tight; the cape is a good little cover. Also,

Gwyneth Paltrow Explains How You Can Drink a Lot and Still Look Like Her

Gwyneth Paltrow may look like she subsists primarily on wild salmon and cucumber water, but the actress admits she’s not above a good junk food splurge.

Eddie Murphy Explains Why He Wouldn’t Portray Bill Cosby On ‘SNL’ Special

Eddie Murphy says he chose not to reprise his famous impression of Bill Cosby on the “Saturday Night Live” 40th anniversary special because he didn’t want to joke about the embattled comedian’s sexual assault scandal.

“It’s horrible,” Murphy told The Washington Post in a lengthy interview published Tuesday. “There’s nothing funny about it. If you get up there and you crack jokes about him, you’re just hurting people. You’re hurting him. You’re hurting his accusers. I was like, ‘Hey, I’m coming back to SNL for the anniversary, I’m not turning my moment on the show into this other thing.'”

Cosby has been accused of sexually assaulting more than 50 women.

Murphy, a former “SNL” cast member, almost appeared in the sketch before changing his mind and deciding to simply give a brief speech instead. He told The Post he “totally understood” why “SNL” wanted to do the bit, which ended up starring current cast member Kenan Thompson as Cosby.

“It was the biggest thing in the news at the time,” Murphy said. “I can see why they thought it would be funny, and the sketch that Norm [Macdonald] wrote was hysterical.”

After the airing of the February special, Macdonald explained in a series of tweets that Murphy declined to play Cosby because “he will not kick a man when he is down.” In response, Cosby released a statement thanking Murphy for his decision.

“I am very appreciative of Eddie and I applaud his actions,” a Cosby spokesperson said.

Donald Trump Finally Explains Why He Doesn’t Apologize

If any of the presidential candidates have something apologize for, eh … it’s probably Donald Trump. But don’t expect to hear a “sorry” anytime soon.

“I fully think apologizing’s a great thing, but you have to be wrong,” Trump told Jimmy Fallon on his show Friday.

“This is unbelievable,” laughed Fallon. And it is.

During his brief time campaigning, Trump has managed to mock fellow candidates about their looks, publicly attack Fox’s Megyn Kelly over “unfair” questions during a debate and incense millions with his polarizing views on immigration.

Yeah, that’s pretty unbelievable. In Trump’s defense, however, he did say if he was ever wrong, he would apologize “sometime in the hopefully distant future.”

So, yeah, we’ll probably all be dead by then, but at least that’s something.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

This Theory Perfectly Explains Why ‘The Hobbit’ Movies Were So Bad

Look, some of us liked “The Hobbit” trilogy. They’re not the perfect movies, but it’s a perfect adventure. Oh, and there’s a dragon who’s a total baller.

Other people, however, didn’t really appreciate the films. In fact, they really hated them.

And that’s how frenemies are made.

The criticism has been that the movies were overly exaggerated, there was too much CGI and it didn’t need to be stretched into a trilogy. Now, a fan theory suggests the films were actually meant to be a little ridiculous and needlessly drawn out.

The Theory: “The Hobbit” films were bloated with CGI and long-winded because they represent Bilbo’s own exaggerated retellings of his adventure.

Redditor Questionbdp posed the idea as “internal justification” for why the movies were a “disappointment,” and it actually makes sense. The Redditor explains:

What Bilbo actually experienced during his adventure with the Dwarves was probably far less significant and monumental than the movies make it out to be, because the movies show how Bilbo retells his adventures, not how he actually lived them.

The theory goes on to say Bilbo probably felt bummed after he returned from his adventure to find all the other Hobbits didn’t care and were selling off all his stuff. (You nasty Hobbitses!) Because of this, he makes his story larger than life and “events which only filled a small book turned into three separate movies.”

Commenters called the theory “brilliant,” and one even joked, “Lol, Peter Jackson, is that you?”

Speaking of Jackson, even he says “The Hobbit” movies were meant to be a different tone than “Lord of the Rings,” but could this be the reason why?

In J. R. R. Tolkien‘s original stories, Bilbo authors his own memoir, There and Back Again, so it’s entirely possible that he embellished a bit. The dude was pretty good at making stuff up when explaining how he escaped the Goblin tunnels to his Dwarf bros, after all. And how else would you explain Legolas running up a crumbling tower?

Image: YouTube/MakeAGif

Ugh … #SMH.

Jackson said he doesn’t have regrets when it comes to the films, so we’re thinking he either completely missed that Legolas scene, or perhaps there’s a bigger plan at work.

Please let there be a bigger plan at work.

Pras Explains The Unexpected Outcome Of Wyclef Jean’s Failed Presidential Bid

The 2011 Haitian presidential election of was full of surprises. Grammy Award-winning artist Pras Michel had convinced his good friend and well-known Haitian singer Michel “Sweet Mickey” Martelly to run for office, then he heard that another famous Haitian musician had thrown his hat into the ring — his former Fugees bandmate Wyclef Jean.

“That was a bombshell,” he told host Roy Sekoff during Friday’s episode of “The HuffPost Show.”

While Jean’s camp had millions in his campaign fund, Sweet Mickey was getting by with much less, Michel explained.

“He’s the biggest Haitian international superstar, so he came in and we were the little train that could,” Michel said. “Wyclef came in with $ 20 million just to register. We had just $ 17,000.”

Michel said the competition from Jean gave Martelly an unexpected boost in the race. Once news outlets heard that Michel and Jean were on competing campaigns, the press coverage started flowing in.

“Actually, he helped us because his weight was so huge. Then everyone made it ‘ex-bandmate not supporting Wyclef,’ which helped Michel Martelly get some international coverage,” he said.

In the end, Martelly beat the odds, winning the election in a landslide vote after Jean was disqualified from the race — though no official reason was made public, press speculated it was because he had not met the residency requirement for the role.

Michel’s new documentary “Sweet Micky for President,” which chronicles Martelly’s road to victory, is slated to be screened at the L.A. Film Festival this year.

Bill Nye Announces the 2015 Fun Fun Fun Fest Lineup and Explains the Axis of Fun

Nothing validates a claim quite like hard facts from a scientist, which is why Fun Fun Fun Fest, Austin’s popular cross-genre Indie music festival, hand-picked Bill Nye to announce the 2015 lineup and provide evidence that this fest is, in fact, the most fun in all the land.

Fun Fun Fun X from funfunfunfestival on Vimeo.

Although The Science Guy clearly has the chops to crunch the numbers and appears to be all up in pop culture these days, how exactly did he end up as an ambassador for this fest?

“About 2 years ago, I wanted to find a better way of showing folks that FFF was different than other festivals, because I really believe that it is. It’s not a very credible thought coming from me though,” explains co-founder James Moody. “So we decided to work with a scientist to basically prove, through science, that FFF was special… and scientifically different from everything else out there. Thankfully Bill Nye agreed, likes tacos, and loves Wu-Tang, so here we are. Because science.”

To slam-dunk the case, Nye employs all the tools in his arsenal such as a Wu-Tang Periodic table, a mind-blowing fun equation and “Quantitative Bummer Observation” metrics to explain his conclusion. With the comedy lineup yet to be announced, it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see him show up on the Yellow stage come November but I don’t have the science to prove it yet.

Check out the video for this year’s lineup and the full demonstration.

Natalie Portman Explains What She Learned Going Through ‘Dark Moments’ At Harvard

Attending Harvard University, said actress Natalie Portman, “changed the very questions I was asking.”

Portman, a 2003 graduate of Harvard, was the keynote speaker at Harvard College’s Class Day on Wednesday. Portman joked up front that she had wanted some comedy writers for her speech because at her Class Day, Will Ferrell was their hilarious speaker. She didn’t get anyone to help her craft jokes, she said, and so Portman’s speech largely focused on her explaining how she confronted her own doubts when she went to Harvard.

In high school, she was voted most likely to be a contestant on “Jeopardy,” which Portman said was “code for nerdy.” But when Portman came to Harvard, after the 1999 release of “Star Wars: Episode I” that she starred in, she was worried she’d be viewed as unworthy and only gotten in because of her fame.

“I got in only because I was famous — this is how others viewed me and how I viewed myself,” Portman admitted. Portman said she would have some “pretty dark moments” as a Harvard student.

“There were several occasions I started crying in meetings with professors, overwhelmed with what I was supposed to pull off when I could barely get out of bed in the morning,” she recounted.

class day

Bouncing between researching about underground groups for her role in “V for Vendetta” and making the stoner comedy “Your Highness,” among other films, Portman said she learned to find her own meaning and not have her success determined by box office receipts.

Portman learned as she studied for her role in “Black Swan” that “the only thing that separates you from others is your quirks, or even flaws.”

“There was a reason I was an actor,” Portman said, “because I love what I do and I saw from my peers and my mentors that was not only an acceptable reason, that was the best reason.”

Science Explains How Your Spouse’s Personality Affects Your Career

Who you marry doesn’t affect just your happiness at home — your spouse can also play a major role in your career prosperity, according to new research from Washington University in St. Louis. This study, published in Psychological Science, discovered that it’s not only your personality that matters when it comes to achievement. Your spouse’s personality also affects your workplace success.

The five-year study examined 5,000 married people who ranged in age from 19 to 89. Approximately 75 percent of the sample included homes where both spouses worked. Researchers administered a series of psychological tests to assess participant’s scores in five broad areas of personality — openness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, and conscientiousness.

They also tracked on-the-job performance of working spouses by using annual surveys designed to measure occupational success. Each worker provided self-reports related to job satisfaction, salary increases, and the likelihood of being promoted.

While other studies have shown it’s helpful to have a spouse who ranks high in agreeableness, this study shows that workers with the most occupational success had spouses who scored high for conscientiousness in the personality assessments. Conscientiousness is characterized by a tendency to be organized and dependable. Conscientious people also show self-discipline, behave dutifully, strive for achievement, and prefer planned activities over spontaneous events.

Three Ways a Conscientious Spouse Contributes to Success

The study showed that a conscientious spouse promoted career success regardless of whether both spouses worked. It also concluded that a conscientious spouse was equally important for both male and female working spouses. The researchers discovered that a conscientious person is likely to support a spouse’s career in three pivotal ways:

1. Completing day-to-day tasks. The conscientious spouse is likely to do household chores, pay bills, shop for groceries, and care for children. This can free up the working spouse to focus on work outside the home.

2. Role modeling healthy skills. The working spouse may pick up on some of those good habits — like behaving diligently and reliably — which can boost career success.

3. Keeping the working spouse’s personal life running smoothly. The conscientious spouse reduces overall stress and promotes a healthy work-life balance which can assist the working spouse in career advancement.

What Can We Learn from the Study?

Spouses who can truly help advance your career go beyond simply encouraging you to ask for that raise or apply for that new job. Instead, career success relies heavily on having a spouse who keeps life outside of work operating smoothly for the long haul.

If you’re not yet married — and you’re ambitious about your career endeavors — a potential mate’s conscientiousness may be worth considering. If you’re already married and you’re concerned that your spouse’s personality isn’t exactly advancing your professional life, don’t run out and get a divorce with the hope of benefiting your career. Most of the research shows the stress of divorce causes decreased productivity for about five years.

Perhaps the most important takeaway from the study is that we should develop an awareness of how our own personalities affect our partners. Simply being aware of the characteristics and behaviors that may help — as well as hinder — one another can go a long way to working together as a team to reach your goals.

Dick Cavett Explains How David Letterman’s ‘Mask Of Innocence’ Helped Him Get Away With Anything

Late-night TV legend Dick Cavett joined HuffPost Live on Wednesday to look back on the legacy of David Letterman and say goodbye to the subversive comedy icon, who officially begins his retirement after his final “Late Show” episode airs tonight.

Cavett, a longtime fan of and former guest on Letterman’s show, told host Josh Zepps that the key to Letterman’s incredible interview style was his ability to hilariously insult his guests even as they sat right next to him, creating a unique “sense of danger” on his show. Cavett said Letterman was able to sneak by his biting barbs thanks to “that hayseed, rustic, Midwestern, innocent, clownish face.”

In order to do “those things that he was criticized for and the dummies didn’t get,” Cavett explained Letterman often hid his cutting wit “behind a wonderful mask of innocence, and I think that’s what made it effective for those who dug it, among whom I was one.”

Cavett added that often guests had no idea they’d been hilariously ripped apart by Letterman until after the interview was over.

“David’s attitude — it wasn’t so much ever what he said — but his attitude and his looks were priceless, and I’m sure some of [the guests] were stunned when they got home, saw themselves with David and saw what he had done to them,” Cavett said.

Lalaine Explains How That Magical ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Reunion Came To Be

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and that rock doesn’t have Wi-Fi), you’ve probably heard about the recent mini “Lizzie McGuire” reunion with Hilary Duff, Lalaine and Jake Thomas. If you did somehow miss it, just know their spontaneous meetup in a bowling alley was definitely what dreams are made of.

So this happened last night… #LizzieMcGuire

A photo posted by Jake Thomas (@sirjakethomas) on

Recently, Miranda Sanchez (known as Lalaine IRL) spoke with HuffPost Entertainment and explained why that impromptu meeting was totally fate.

Image: Tumblr

So how did this even happen?
I like to bowl. I have my own ball that my dude got me during Christmas, so we’re pretty into it. We started bowling and I swore I thought I heard [Hilary Duff]. Like her voice will never not be recognizable for me. I mean, c’mon, we were like family for how long? And then I looked, and it totally was her. We finally happened to be in the same place after 14 years. It was random and a little bit of fate maybe, so I forced fate’s hand a little bit and I immediately hit up Jake [Thomas] because he’s like less than a mile away from the bowling alley.

Oh cool, so you guys kept in touch?
Yeah, I have actually been very close with most of the people that were on the show. I was just on the phone with Adam [Lamberg] for example, so I just was like, “This is hilarious,” so I hit Jake up, and I was like, “Yo, at Pins. Hilary’s like four lanes down,” and he was like, “Haha! Oh my God! Should I come there?” So he came on over, and then we were like, “Let’s make this even more hilarious and send her a drink.” And we did. She waved to us, and she had no idea who we were because we were pretty far from her and it was dark.

But then she walked over and immediately saw me. As she was walking up, I’m just like, “Really, girl? Really?”… It hit her that it’s me. She turned around and was cracking up, and it didn’t even faze her that Jake was standing right next to me. I was like, “Are you kidding me? Did you not see this thing right by me?” She was like double stumped … It was just fate.

Image: Giphy

Wow, this is amazing. It’s the best Instagram post I’ve ever seen.
Oh for sure, and Jake was just like, “I get dibs on putting this up first,” and I was like, “I don’t care about that, dude.” It’s probably been a couple years less for him, like, maybe it’s been 12 years for him since he’s seen her, but for me it’s been like 14 … I was more on the fact that it was hilarious that all of us were here.

So was Gordo not invited because he hates bowling?
[Laughs] Oh my God! Adam would’ve totally been invited. Gordo may hate bowling, but who knows — after 12 years he might’ve changed his mind.

Might’ve changed his mind. Sure …

Elizabeth Gilbert Explains Why She Stopped Being ‘Anti-Social Media’

Elizabeth Gilbert readily admits that just a few years ago, she deliberately avoided using platforms like Twitter and Facebook. Like many others initially do, the Eat, Pray, Love author viewed social media as a vortex she simply didn’t want to get pulled into or caught up in. So, she always resisted it.

“I was very ‘anti-social media’ because I thought it was just going to be a giant time suck and a big energy waster,” Gilbert explains.

Fast-forward to the present day, however, and she’s got quite a different perspective. In fact, when Oprah asks the author about the first thing she does when she wakes up in the morning, Gilbert gives an answer than even she wouldn’t have expected two years ago.

“[I] check my Twitter,” she says, laughing. “Right there in bed.”

Gilbert’s first foray into social media began when she reluctantly joined Facebook. That’s when she experienced a profound shift. “I’m like, ‘Why did I wait so long to do this?'” she says.

What Gilbert found when she began using social media is that there is an engaged community of people with whom she can interact, talk to and learn from.

“The first thing I do every morning is I go to my Facebook page,” she says. “I engage in conversation with the women who showed up there that day. I answer their questions… and I ask questions. I say, ‘What are we going to do today, you guys? What are we going to work on? Here’s what I’m working on.’ Or, I’ll say, ‘I’m stuck. What do you guys do when you’re stuck like this?’ I begin a conversation that then goes on for the next 24 hours.”

It may not seem like a spiritual act on the surface, but Gilbert explains that the daily ritual of engaging in open conversation truly feeds her soul.

“There’s so much grace and love and community in that,” she marvels. “It’s communion.”

As a writer, Gilbert adds that social media gives her another outlet through which she can exercise — and evolve — her craft.

“I’ve expanded that definition [of my vocation]. It used to just be writing novels, writing books. But now, it’s also about writing things to people on Facebook, using words to try to get closer to the truth and the goodness and the glory,” she says. “That’s what I look forward to every day.”

John Oliver Explains How America’s Neglected Infrastructure Is Like A Lego Set

If you weren’t aware that U.S. roads, bridges and dams are in serious state of disrepair, allow John Oliver to put it plainly: “We aren’t just flirting with disaster, we’re rounding third base and asking if disaster has any condoms.”

On Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver broke down the sorry state of America’s neglected infrastructure, including “hold your breath” bridges, killer potholes, a severe lack of inspectors and potential floods from our half-century old dams.

“Much like most Botox recipients and competitive cloggers, the average dam is 52 years old and has something deeply broken inside of it,” said Oliver.

As Oliver explains, The White House is counting on the closure of corporate tax loopholes, no one wants to raise the gas tax and House Speaker John Boehner has his own ideas about fixing the problem which involves two years of not doing anything followed by ignoring Oliver’s phone calls, emails and Vines.

During a montage of politicians cutting ribbons with oversized scissors, Oliver also points out that repairing infrastructure isn’t as “sexy” as building anew, and backs it up with the perfect Legos analogy.

“Infrastructure is like Legos,” he said. “Building is fun, destroying is fun, but a Lego maintenance set would be the most boring fucking toy in the world.”

To top it off, Oliver presents a trailer for a new kind of summer blockbuster movie, one that’s more about fixing cracks and less about explosions.

Science Explains Why Kids Are Terrible At Sharing

When we were kids, sharing our snacks or toys was about as appealing as sitting in time out. We were hardly willing to give up our most prized possessions to our peers right away — and now neuroscience might be able to explain why.

According to a new study, it takes more of a controlled thought process for kids to be generous. While children have an immediate, emotional response in the brain when they witness positive or negative behavior, deciding to share something comes after evaluating the whole picture and reflecting on the morality of those actions.

“Moral evaluation in preschool children, similar to adults, is complex and constructed from both emotion and cognition,” study author Jean Decety said in a statement. “However, we found that only differences in neural markers of the latter predict actual generosity.”

Researchers from the University of Chicago recorded brain activity of children ages 3 to 5 while they viewed helpful and harmful scenarios, and then had to make a decision on how to treat another child they didn’t know.

The children were gifted 10 stickers, then were told the next child who came into the room wouldn’t be given any stickers. Researchers then asked if they wanted to give any of their stickers to the other child. The kids shared a little under two of their allotted 10 stickers on average.

The research suggests that the children’s judgments were influenced immediately by the harmful and helpful scenes they were shown, but they only chose to be generous after thoughtful processing of those scenes. The study is the first one of its kind to link immediate moral evaluations to actual moral behavior and the specific markers where it happens in the brain, researchers say.

In a time of the year where acts of altruism are so prevalent, the study authors suggest the findings could help parents who are looking to help instill the values of giving in their kids. Previous research also shows that giving back can have a host of health benefits, including lower stress, a happier disposition and even increased longevity.

The findings were published in the journal Current Biology.

Jon Stewart Explains His Unique Brand Of Activism

Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and the writer and director of the new film “Rosewater,” said he has a unique brand of activism that involves “living pleasantly.”

“People always say, ‘Well, are you an activist?’ and I say, ‘No, I’m not really an activist,’ but if there’s some measure of activism in me, it’s the quiet activism of living pleasantly,” Stewart said in a recent interview for Voice of America’s satirical show “OnTen,” which airs in Iran.

“That sense of, when you go to a restaurant, the person who’s waiting tables, like, don’t be a dick to them,” Stewart told VOA’s Saman Arbabi, a writer and producer who created “Parazit,” the VOA television show that has been called “The Daily Show of Iran.” “That mentality, I feel like, I try to infuse in my life and my work, if I can.”

When Arbabi admitted he’s “seen a lot of dickheads in this field,” Stewart laughed and revealed how he keeps his focus.

“I’ve worked a lot of shit jobs, and I’ve struggled a lot,” Stewart said. “I think you never lose, that person is always with you, to let you know that you’re not so great. I’ve been fired enough to know that that person is still in me, and that I have to work harder and get better.”

The episode of “OnTen” featuring Stewart will air on Friday.

Elizabeth Gilbert Explains What Everyone Gets Wrong About ‘Soul Mates’ (VIDEO)

How many times have you heard people say they’re looking for their “soul mate?” When she embarked on her now-famous Eat, Pray, Love journey, author Elizabeth Gilbert did end up falling deeply in love with her now-husband — but he isn’t the “soul mate” that so many people search for. And that’s exactly why Gilbert says their relationship has a lasting future.

“People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants,” Gilbert wrote in Eat, Pray, Love. “But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that’s holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life. A true soul mate is probably the most important person you will ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake.”

Before she journeyed to Italy, India and Bali for her book, Gilbert couldn’t make sense of the fact that she had found and subsequently lost a man she had believed to be her soul mate. Then, a friend of Gilbert’s carefully explained what a soul mate is — and why you don’t always want to marry him.

“He told me about somebody who I had lost — who I thought was my soul mate — he said, ‘He probably was. But you don’t understand what a soul mate is,'” Gilbert recalls her friend saying. “‘You think it’s all roses and happiness. A soul mate is somebody who changes you. And then, sometimes, they have to leave because the intensity of the relationship is so much that you can’t actually have [stability].'”

Rather than look to a “soul mate” for lasting love or marriage, Gilbert now believes in looking for something different.

“Your partner is something else,” Gilbert says. “That’s your friend. My husband is my best friend. He’s not the mirror that holds up my flaws. He’s just the guy who’s like, ‘I think you’re terrific’… It’s just simple, showing up for each other.”

Gilbert still admits that the fire and intensity of a soul mate isn’t without its merits. “Whatever they fired up in you, you might have needed fired up,” she says. “And then you might need them to go, so that you can go on your journey.”

The second part of Elizabeth Gilbert’s conversation with Oprah airs on “Super Soul Sunday” this Sunday, Oct. 12, on OWN at 11 a.m. ET, during which it also streams live on Oprah.com, Facebook.com/owntv and Facebook.com/supersoulsunday.

Young Poet Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner Explains The Essence Of Climate Change At UN Summit

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations,” John F. Kennedy proclaimed in 1964. “When power narrows the areas of man’s concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.”

Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, a 26-year-old poet from the Marshall Islands, recently demonstrated the impact a poem can have. She spoke during the opening segment of the 2014 United Nations Climate Summit this week. In a piece titled “Dear Matafele Peinem,” she managed to capture the stark reality of climate change in just over three minutes.

The entire poem, and the speech that preceded it, can be heard in the video below.

“To tackle (climate change), we need a radical change of course,” Jetnil-Kijiner explains. “This isn’t easy, I know. It means ending carbon pollution within my lifetime. It means supporting those of us most affected to prepare for unavoidable climate impacts. And it means taking responsibility for irreversible loss and damage caused by greenhouse gas emissions.”

“I ask world leaders to take us all along on your ride,” she added. “We won’t slow you down. We’ll help you win the most important race of all. The race to save humanity.”

Jetnil-Kijiner is a spoken word artist and co-founder of an environmental NGO in the Marshall Islands called Jo-JiKuM. The organization focuses on empowering youth by educating them on the importance of environmentalism and mobilizing them to work toward solutions to climate change issues. She was one of 38 civil society representatives chosen to present at the Summit.

An excerpt from her poem:

hands reaching out, fists raising up, banners unfurling, megaphones booming

and we are canoes blocking coal ships

we are the radiance of solar villages

we are the rich clean soil of the farmer’s past

we are petitions blooming from teenage fingertips

we are families biking, recycling, reusing, engineers dreaming, designing, building, artists painting, dancing, writing

we are spreading the word

and there are thousands out on the street, marching with signs, hand in hand

chanting for change NOW

Counting Crows Frontman Adam Duritz Explains Why No One Can Find Him On Tinder

Single ladies, take note: Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz is on the market, and he’s on Tinder.

You can follow in the footsteps of former Duritz love interests such as Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Emmy Rossum by simply downloading the dating app, which the musician recently joined. After tweeting a screenshot of his profile, he explained to HuffPost Live why he isn’t ashamed to use the popular dating service.

“Everybody is on Tinder,” he told host Ricky Camilleri. “My married friends are on Tinder. Seriously, there is nobody who is not on Tinder at this point. It’s a video game. My married publicist who told me not to go on Tinder is on Tinder, and so is her husband.”

Duritz is surprised that people even came across his profile to begin with.

“I don’t think most people would even have me on their [age] range. Most people my age aren’t on [Tinder],” the 50-year-old said. “They don’t even know how to use a phone.”

The singer seemed less surprised, however, at the fact that he was still single.

“You muddle through and you crash into a wall,” he said, referring to the relationship trajectory he finds himself frequently succumbing to. “I blame myself because it’s my fault. … I’m crazy, and I write a lot of songs about that particular wall. I don’t know why more people haven’t picked up on it.”

Lindsay Lohan Explains Why She Would Consciously Make Bad Decisions (VIDEO)

To help her start establishing a healthy lifestyle, Lindsay Lohan has been meeting with celebrity fitness trainer and life coach A.J. Johnson. When they sit down to talk about the bad decisions Lohan made in the past, Lohan admits she was sabotaging herself.

“I’ve known if something I’m doing is the wrong choice, but I’ve still done it anyway,” Lohan says in the above clip from OWN’s docuseries, “Lindsay.”

Johnson asks if she thought about the negative outcomes her choices have. “I wasn’t thinking about the consequences then,” Lohan says. “I think growing up and with age and time and experiences, and dealing with consequences, I’ve learned to look at things and look at the results of them afterward.”

Later, Lohan reveals why problems at home have made her feel she was in a vicious cycle.

“In the past, everything would be great, and then I’d sabotage it,” Lohan says. “Its good good, good, good, good — and there’s that thing in my head where it’s like, ‘Oh — time to sabotage.’ I think that it was because things would be really good at home for like, three to six months, and then my dad would disappear for a few nights, or disappear for week, and then it would all just happen again. So everything’s good, good, good, good — and then it just stops. And it’s bad again.”

“It was me recognizing what I was doing,” Lohan says. “And I didn’t recognize that for so long, and that was an awakening experience for me.”

“Lindsay” airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.
