Cherah is just a few days old, but she is already a favorite at the Denver Zoo.

The female Sumatran orangutan was born on March 25 in “a natural and uneventful birth,” according to the zoo’s Facebook, to mom Nias and dad Berani.

Cherah, which means “bright” in Indonesian, is not on public display. She and mom, who are both healthy, are taking some time to bond behind the scenes before they are introduced to zoo visitors some time in the next week or so.

The baby primate is sure to be a hit. Not only is she adorable, she seems to have a knack for comedy, often pulling funny faces in the Facebook photos the zoo has shared.

Stephen Fry Reportedly Faces Blasphemy Probe After Calling God A ‘Maniac’

English comedian Stephen Fry is reportedly under investigation for blasphemy after calling God “utterly evil” and a “maniac” during an interview with an Irish TV show two years ago.

An unidentified member of the public told the Irish Independent they had reported the outspoken atheist’s comments to authorities in western Ireland because they were doing their “civic duty by reporting a crime,” not because they were personally offended.

Individuals who publish or speak blasphemy can face a fine of up to €25,000 under the Republic of Ireland’s Defamation Act 2009, according to the BBC.

Fry, who currently stars in CBS’s “The Great Indoors,” criticized God on TV channel RTE in 2015 after being asked what he’d say to “him, her or it” if given the chance.

“I’ll say: Bone cancer in children, what’s that about? How dare you create a world where there is such misery that’s not our fault? It’s utterly, utterly evil,” he told Gay Byrne, host of program “The Meaning of Life.” “Why should I respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid god who creates a world which is so full of injustice and pain?”

“The god who created this universe, if he created this universe, is quite clearly a maniac, an utter maniac, totally selfish,” Fry added. “We have to spend our lives on our knees thanking him. What kind of god would do that?”

“Yes, the world is very splendid, but it also has in it insects whose whole life cycle is to burrow into the eyes of children and make them blind,” he said.

The individual claiming responsibility for reporting Fry’s comments told the Independent that they traveled to the Ennis Garda station to file the report shortly after the interview aired. They’ve repeatedly followed up with police ever since.

“I told the Garda I wanted to report Fry for uttering blasphemy and RTE for publishing/broadcasting it and that I believed these were criminal offenses under the Defamation Act 2009,” the person told the news site. “I simply believed that the comments made by Fry on RTE were criminal blasphemy and that I was doing my civic duty by reporting a crime.”

Local authorities told the Independent that they are investigating the complaint but that charges are unlikely.

Other atheists have since rallied behind Fry.

Atheist Ireland, which has called the defamation law “silly, silencing, and dangerous,” responded to news of the investigation by publishing 25 other blasphemous quotes that they released after the Irish law first went into effect.

The British Humanist Association also released a statement on Saturday defending Fry’s words and also calling for the dissolution of Ireland’s blasphemy law.

“It is ridiculous that Stephen Fry is being investigated for a possible breach of Ireland’s blasphemy laws,” BHA Chief Executive Andrew Copson said. “Not only are such laws detrimental to free speech here in Europe, but they also enable countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Iran to justify their own laws, which in the case of 13 states come with a death sentence.”

A spokesperson for Fry, reached by the Telegraph, declined comment, stating: “[There is] nothing for us to say while this is under investigation.”

French Presidential Candidate Faces Fashion Flap

SUIT FLAP: Beleaguered French presidential candidate François Fillon made headlines again on Sunday, but this time with allegations of a sartorial nature.
The politician, who represents the right-wing Les Républicains party, is the protagonist of a feature story in Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper, whose headline reads: “Qui a payé les costumes de François Fillon?” (or “Who paid for François Fillon’s suits?”).
According to the article, Fillon has long been a client of the tony men’s wear maker Arnys, as were François Mitterrand, Andy Warhol, François Truffot and Marcello Mastroianni before him. (Arnys since 2012 has been owned by LVMH Möet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, which applied the men’s firm’s expertise into Berluti’s expansion drive.)
“But who pays for his made-to-measure suits, blazers and trousers? According to our information, since 2012, the former prime minister was gifted almost 48,500 euros [or $ 51,773 at current exchange] of clothing. Of that, 35,500 euros [or $ 37,895] seemed to have been paid in cash.”
The paper wrote that on Feb. 20 two suits were paid for by a friend with a check for 13,000 euros, or $ 13,877.
The report about the pricy gifts to Fillon — a vocal proponent of French people making “sacrifices” — was being picked up and circulated wildly

Ones to Watch: New Faces of Streetwear From London

London is known for its streetwear scene, composed of a mash-up of subcultures including hip-hop, skateboarding and surfing. The popularity of the urban market has grown recently with obscure labels becoming more mainstream and newer brands launching. Here are a few designers on the rise who are getting set to present their collections during London Fashion Week Men’s.
A-Cold-Wall
Samuel Ross named his label A-Cold-Wall as a nod to Britain’s melting pot culture. “The inspiration behind the name came from the familiarity of environments,” the designer said. “Multiple class systems interact, with the people overlapping and integrating.”
Calling London a “mishmash of high/low property piled on top of each other” with its “distant relationships of working class and upper middle class areas,” these influences appear in A-Cold-Wall’s deconstructed workwear that includes oversize scarves used as a utility holster — a bestseller.
The 25-year-old Ross — who launched his label in 2015 — was born and raised in South West London and studied graphic design and contemporary Illustration at DeMontfort University in Leicester.
Before delving into fashion, he worked on graphic and product design at Imperial Design GB and Story Worldwide and dabbled in homewares, commercial buildouts and advertising campaigns. He also worked as a street artist and

Pedro Almodovar’s Women: The Two Faces of Julieta

Pedro Almodovar loves women. His films feature memorable female roles: look at Kika, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Talk to Her, Volver, yet another great part for his protégé Penelope Cruz, and now Julieta, the titular protagonist penned for two fine Spanish actresses: Emma Suarez as the mature Julieta, and Adriana Ugarte, Julieta as a young woman. Based on short stories by Canadian author Alice Munro, Julieta further illustrates Almodovar’s literary bent–The Skin I Live In, for example was an adaptation of Thierry Jonquet’s revenge tale, Migale, but just right for his style, on the verge of melodrama. His women, in every case, are out there. Last fall, I had the opportunity to talk to his stars about working with this unique Spanish auteur, and how he prepared them for playing Julieta.

Penelope Cruz has said she would drop anything to work with Pedro Almodovar. Is that the general attitude among actresses?

Emma Suarez: He’s an amazing director with an international career. So when you work with Pedro you know that film will get international distribution. Not all Spanish directors have that certainty. I have worked with many directors so I know very well what it means to go to Cannes. His movies start with a good script. You have a role. He wants everything and more. That means you also have to find more inside of you.

How did you prepare?

Each of us has to face the project from a personal place. I asked Pedro to give me references. It’s not like you can naturally bring out that kind of pain, the kind he’s interested in unearthing. Once the tears have dried, then you confront that place again. Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking was the determining piece for me. I had a lot of time to prepare, to read and look at art. I looked at Lucien Freud.

Tell me about his casting you.

I have been working since 1979. Pedro was starting to make cinema then. I ran into him at John Waters’ Pink Flamingos. At the San Sebastian Film Festival, he told me about this project. I got some scenes to read. By the third test, Pedro said, I like you a lot. When he told me he wanted to work with me, I was hoping for a comedy.

This film is not comedy, especially the relationship of mothers and daughters.

What Pedro’s really after is the mystery of why we abandon the people we love. It could be your mother, lover, someone else. The key is abandonment. Pedro added that to the story. I think that for Alice Munro, this is more a mother- daughter story–and about the generation gap. But Pedro wanted to go deeper than that.

Almodovar treads a fine line between tragedy and melodrama. Is your character tragic?

I don’t think this is a melodrama: Pedro was after was restraint. He wanted to keep things tight. This was difficult for me because the emotion had to be transmitted through the gaze, especially because the adult Julieta is mostly silent. Tragedy can be more spectacular. I don’t think you have to be a mother to interpret mothers. The film is also talking about the passage of time, and ways in which the present forces you to look back at a past that remains in fog. Julieta’s courage is that she knows she will go into this painful territory, and she goes there anyway. She doesn’t have a choice. Maybe that is tragic.

Adriana Ugarte plays the younger Julieta. Pedro Almodovar worked with her in an entirely different way.

How were you cast?

Adriana Ugarte: I did a reading and did not know who the director was. I just was told he was a famous, important director. When I was young, I didn’t allow myself to dream one day I will work with Pedro.

How is it to work with Almodovar?

For me, it is an addiction to a drug. It’s complicated not to fall in love with him. The process was great. Pedro did not give me any references. I did not read the Alice Munro stories. We wanted to make something new. We built the character together. I need to hear my characters in my dreams. I wait for her voice. When I read the script, I felt that Julieta is a pure woman; she does not prejudge, she is sexual. Maybe in the ’80’s we were more open-minded and relaxed with our bodies. In the train she enjoyed the moment. Sometimes in life you need to do that, to believe in another reality. I needed to be Julieta.

Does he have a special gift for understanding women?

Pedro gave me advice, when I had doubts about playing Julieta well. He said, “Perfection does not exist. But, you should always look for it. Stop crying. Try again.” He’s a magician. He can understand women in a deep way, because he is connected with Mother Nature, and the origins of life. Everything interests him: Your mouth. A baby. He focuses on everything.

Take me through one scene and show me how he directed you.

In the bath scene I was like a zombie; he directed me, “You are not sad, not dead, I want you to be empty. You have nothing inside. You don’t have bones, muscles, or oxygen.” This was a mix of very physical and psychological training. I am in the bath and the audience thinks Julieta is dead.

In your view, is Julieta a mother-daughter story?

It is about parents and children, family relations that are delicate and fragile. We think our family will not accept us in fear of the consequences. Maybe it is better to show yourself as you are, better to be sorry for the things you say than not say them. Relationships are not perfect. We try to create the perfect family, but all families have problems.

Is Julieta a tragedy?

If life is a tragedy, then this film is a tragedy. We decide many things but matters of love, health, we don’t decide. We are trapped in our own drama. Julieta is a tragedy with hope.

Djokovic wins, and again faces questions about match-fixing (Yahoo Sports)

For the second time in three days, Novak Djokovic won a match at the Australian Open and was confronted by questions about match-fixing in the sport. The five-time champion had just beaten 19-year-old French wild-card entry Quentin Halys 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (3) in the second round on Wednesday night – his 34th win in his last 35 matches at Melbourne Park – when his news conference veered to questions about the issue that has overshadowed the start of the season’s first major. After his first-round win, on the day when the BBC and BuzzFeed News published reports alleging match-fixing had gone unchecked in tennis, the No. 1-ranked Djokovic recalled when a member of his support team was approached with an offer to throw a match in Russia in 2007.

Painfully Close Photos Of Human Faces Look Strangely Inhuman

Glance at a crowd of people from a great enough distance and they’ll cease to even look human, their particular parts fading out of focus until the pack resembles a uniform army of flesh-colored toy soldiers.

Zoom in and you’ll see their hands and hair and the choice of shoes. Keep going and you’ll make out the shapes of their noses, the textures of their faces, the color of their eyes. Keep zooming and the temporary relief of human familiarity is ripped off like a scab, as every tooth, every ear, every pimple, every scar, becomes a singular visual event.

Brooklyn-based photographer Bruce Gilden gets close. So close, in fact, that by gazing upon one of his color portraits you can almost feel hot breath emanating from them, smelling just a bit sour. “You know, I’m photographing people that are not only left behind in most cases, but they’re actually invisible because people don’t want to see them,” Gilden explained in an interview with GUP Magazine.

“I get close because I try to get close to the soul of the people in my pictures,” he added. On the way to the soul, Gilden surely gets a good glimpse of the face, every blemish, wrinkle and pore, turning one of photography’s most tried and true tropes — portraiture — into something unsettling, a little gut-wrenching.

Gilden, who is now 68 years old, has been taking photographs since 1968, when he was a student in college. He’s known for his impulsive style, catching intriguing pedestrians off guard, leaping before them with his camera in one hand and his flash in the other. “Some are taken unawares, some are surprised,” he told PBS. “Some didn’t know what hit them. And I think most people like to be photographed. But since I work in a spontaneous way, I have to be a little bit sneaky because I don’t want them to know that I’m going to take a picture of them.”

Gilden’s series, “Face,” captures the full frontal expressions of people he describes as “underdogs,” those outside the zones of gentrification, not privileged enough to possess the plasticky exterior of the masses. Finding subjects in places from Las Vegas to Des Moines to Milwaukee to West Bromwich, England, Gilden snaps their every quirk and blemish with the authority of a mugshot and the precision of a medical image. Whiteheads bulge with the promise of puss, foundation cakes up like dust gathering on a corpse. What Lucian Freud did to the body Gilden does to the head.

Gilden is not, however, spotlighting his subjects as particularly grotesque aberrations of the human being. He himself identifies with the outsider status of his subjects, and he respects them for it. “I identify with these people in my pictures, because I’m actually photographing myself. The people in my pictures interest me. I like them, and they motivate me.”

Gilden’s portraits may be unforgiving, brutal, ugly, even grotesque. Yet this visceral ugliness isn’t the signal of a monster, but of a human being. One not sanitized and scrubbed clean, buttoned up and plugged in. For Gilden, the ugly is the good stuff, and maybe even lets the soul peer out.

14 Badass Girl Athletes Show Off Their Game Faces

The 2015 Women’s World Cup begins on June 6, and to commemorate the occasion, the clothing brand Wildfang is showcasing some badass young female soccer players.

The company’s CEO Emma McIlroy teamed up with photographer Andrea Corradini to create “#GameFace,” a series of fierce photos of 14 athletes ages 5 to 14. “We are beyond excited about the Women’s World Cup. It’s one of the most amazing moments in sports and women get to take center stage,” McIlroy told The Huffington Post, adding, “We wanted to look forward to the next generation of female footballers and, as you can see, the future of the sport is in good hands.”

The creators reached out to local soccer coaches in Portland, Oregon and invited their young female players to show off their “game faces,” which they define on the Wildfang website as “their most authentic moment, right before they stepped out onto the pitch.”

gameface
Tess, 11: “Cheetahs are my favorite animal — they’re almost as fast as I am.”

Unsure if anyone would show up to the photo shoot, McIlroy and Corradini were pleasantly surprised when over a dozen bold, young athletes stopped by — most coming right before or immediately after practice. With “zero styling,” each girl proudly displayed her purest game face.

“They showed up with such innocent and fierce pride,” Corradini told The Huffington Post. “They were confident, yet giggly. Independent, yet bonded with their teammates. They had no reservations about just being themselves and letting me photograph them in their most natural and authentic way.”

“We wanted to show young females as they truly are — raw, powerful, beautiful,” McIlroy added, noting that she hoped the photo series would provide a refreshing alternative to the images of “young women in pink and wearing princess dresses” that seem so pervasive in today’s society.

The Wildfang CEO also said she hopes other women can “see a little of themselves” in the hardworking female athletes depicted in #GameFace. “We hope they remind them to be a little bolder and tougher and ultimately be really proud of being who they are,” she continued. “Our hope is these images leave you feeling inspired to go kick ass in your day.”

Keep scrolling to see the badass young women of #GameFace and visit the Wildfang blog to learn more about the series.

American Apparel Faces Tough Set of Challenges

American Apparel Inc. is teetering on the edge of chaos.
And if that in itself is nothing new, this time around the retailer’s facing an unusually thorny set of challenges on multiple fronts:
• Ousted founder Dov Charney continues to stir up trouble, from agitating an already disgruntled workforce to seeking a backer to buy the firm, moving ahead with arbitration and, tonight, appearing on ABC’s “20/20.”
• Fourth-quarter losses widened as sales fell more than 9 percent and workers are being furloughed at the Los Angeles factory.
• The brand is being reimagined with more of a social emphasis and some of the scantily clad sales associates long featured in its ads will be replaced with models.
• Shareholders have sued the company, claiming it failed to maintain control of its colorful founder.
Under Charney, American Apparel honed controversy to a high art and lurched from one loan with a sky-high interest rate to the next — always keeping just a step ahead of both the debt collector and Miss Manners.
But this time it’s not Charney who’s courting lenders, pumping up the brand and generally keeping the plates spinning at one of the most prominent U.S. apparel producers. That job now falls to chief executive officer Paula Schneider, who
