Cabana, Funkshion Link for Magic City Fair in Miami Beach

When IMG pulled out of Miami Swim Week in 2015 after a 10-year run, it sent brands and buyers into a tailspin. Without a central location and schedule, attendees wore themselves out scrambling from makeshift venue to makeshift venue or threw their hands up in frustration and skipped fashion shows altogether.
After hearing enough complaints, Sam Ben-Avraham, founder of Cabana trade show and Liberty Fairs elsewhere, and Aleksandar Salé Stojanovic, founder of Funkshion, a fashion and event production company in Miami, hope to fill the hole with Magic City. Their five-day, multi-platform fashion and lifestyle fair centers on Cabana’s and Funkshion’s respective locales across Collins Avenue from each other between 21st and 22nd Streets in Miami Beach.
“By joining forces, we’re able to go to the next level of production, logistics and hospitality,” said Stojanovic, of curating fashion shows, educational trade seminars, networking parties and lifestyle activations like culinary demonstrations, concerts and volleyball games with the same scrutiny as Cabana’s vetting process to avoid oversaturation. “The idea is to improve on IMG, and the city of Miami Beach is being financially supportive. They’re 100 percent in because they recognize the potential.”
In the past few years, Funkshion has presented runway collections in a 500-person tent

Natalia Vodianova’s star-studded annual Fabulous Fund Fair is coming for New York.
Vodianova’s Naked Heart Foundation will throw its fourth annual Fabulous Fund Fair this October, and for the first time the charitable bash will be held in New York. AmfAR is a first-time partner with the Naked Heart Foundation for the Halloween-themed event, which will take place on Oct. 28. Aside from the Halloween timing, the event promises to be “inspired by” artist Jeff Koons.
The first Fabulous Fund Fair was held in London in 2015, usually during London Fashion Week. A typically celebrity- and model-heavy event, guests have included Stella McCartney, Kristin Scott Thomas, Doutzen Kroes, Liv Tyler, Lara Stone, Baptiste Giabiconi, Toby Huntington-Whiteley, Yasmin and Amber Le Bon, Justine Skye and Corinne Bailey Rae.
Karlie Kloss played cohost with Vodianova for this past February’s event, which raised $ 585,000. Tickets and more information, including location, for this fall’s New York event will be released in the coming months.

Thieves Steal $3.9 Million in Jewels From London’s Masterpiece Art Fair

HOT WEATHER HEIST: Thieves quietly swooped on London’s Masterpiece Art Fair, an annual event that takes place in Chelsea, stealing jewels worth 3 million pounds, or $ 3.9 million, from the Geneva-based jeweler Boghossian.
The ticketed fair, which showcases high-end art, antiques and jewelry, has round-the-clock security. It takes place every year at Royal Hospital Chelsea and draws up to 44,000 visitors. According to police, the thieves struck between 5 p.m. on Tuesday and 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
The fair ran from June 29 to July 5, and was open every day from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., which meant that the robbery could have taken place while the fair was still open for business. The thieves were thought to have used distraction techniques to carry out the robbery.
The fair said it is “fully cooperating with the police,” who have been examining the CCTV camera in the space. However, no arrests have been made and there were no witnesses to the theft. Guests are checked on their way into the fair, and on the way out. All bags are opened and examined upon arrival and as people are exiting.

London’s Fashion Illustration Gallery Mounts Art Fair

COLOR COUTURE: “Fashion illustrations have always been almost like a secret beauty that has been sleeping for a number of decades,” said the British illustrator David Downton at The Fashion Illustration Gallery’s second annual art fair in London.
Downton, who is also artist-in-residence at Claridges, joined artists including Gill Button, Tanya Ling and Blair Breitenstein, whose work is on show at the three-day fair held at The Shop at Bluebird in Chelsea.
Works by 30 artists are on display, and prices range from 150 pounds for a small print by Sunflowerman to 25,000 pounds for an original Andy Warhol print. The event is being held in association with Yu Capital and Fashion Illustration Gallery founder William Ling.
“There is something for every eye and every taste. There are nice established talents and new talents. What it does is to create more and more and more buzz. I have probably been doing interviews for five years about the revival of interest in fashion illustration. But, now, I say what revival? It is really here and I’m thrilled.”

Emma Watson Fires Back At Critics Of Her Vanity Fair Shoot

Emma Watson on Sunday responded to critics who said she strayed from her feminist roots when she posed for a revealing photo in Vanity Fair.

In a recent shoot for the magazine, the 26-year-old “Beauty and the Beast” star appears in a white crocheted jacket with no shirt or bra. The pictures, shot by fashion photographer Tim Walker, sparked backlash across social media and from some media outlets.

Watson told Reuters that she’s simply confused by some of the flak she’s received. “It just always reveals to me how many misconceptions and what a misunderstanding there is of what feminism is,” she said.

“Feminism is about giving women choice,” she went on. “Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality. I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it. It’s very confusing.”

“I’m confused. Most people are confused… I’m always just kind of quietly stunned,” the former “Harry Potter” star added.

Along with the criticism, though, came plenty of support for the photo shoot.

For her part, Watson enjoyed the photo shoot, calling it “incredibly artistic.”

“I was so thrilled with how kind of interesting and beautiful the photographs [were],” she said.

Watson has long been an advocate for women’s rights, teaming with the United Nations as a Women Goodwill Ambassador and working on the HeForShe campaign.

“Beauty and the Beast” opens in theaters on March 17.

Rumer Willis Slams Photographers For Allegedly Retouching Her Jawline In Vanity Fair Photos

Rumer Willis loves her jawline just the way it is.

After an outtake from a Vanity Fair photo shoot appeared online, Willis took to Instagram to express her disappointment over what she seems to think was a Photoshopping job gone wrong.

The 27-year-old actress wrote that the size of her jawline was reduced in the high-fashion spread, but photographers Mark Williams and Sara Hirakawa quickly responded to Willis’ claim, explaining that the photo was not retouched “to alter or modify anyone’s face.”

“The photographer Photoshopped my face to make my jaw smaller and I find it really offensive for anyone to try and change the way you look so drastically,” Willis captioned the photo on Instagram.

“I love the way I look and I won’t support anyone who would feel a need to change the way I look to make me beautiful. Whether or not they realize it, it is a form of bullying, which I won’t stand for,” she continued.

After Willis posted the image, the photographers issued a statement to The Cut to explain their editing choices, claiming that “there was never any intention … to alter her appearance.”

Read their response below:

The retouching that was done to the photograph was only done to resolve some distortion with using a wide angle lens for a group shot, and not to alter or modify anyone’s face. We used a wide angle lens, and it might’ve made Rumer’s chin look smaller from the higher angle that we shot the image. We did correct for the optics of the lens slightly as people’s heads get distorted through the wide angle lens. We certainly did not intend to change the way she naturally looks. Our intention was to capture the special bond between Rumer and her sisters.

It saddens us that Rumer feels the way she does about the image and hope she understands that there was never any intention with it to alter her appearance.

We should make clear that this image was an outtake and was not published in Vanity Fair or vf.com nor did they ever see it.

Regardless of the motivation behind the retouching, Willis, the eldest daughter of superstars Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, has been routinely criticized for her appearance from a young age. She’s been vocal about her battle with insecurity and the pressures of fame in the past, penning a powerful essay in Glamour after taking home the Mirror Ball trophy on “Dancing with the Stars” last year.

“When you grow up in the public eye the way that I did, everyone’s looking at you and waiting for you to do something crazy or say something wrong or have a meltdown,” she wrote. “I was constantly bullied because of my looks, so I struggled a lot with my body image.”

“After I finished [the show] I felt more beautiful than I had in my entire life … because of what I’d accomplished and worked so hard for,” she continued. “What it comes down to is this: We all need to stop bullying ourselves and being cruel to other women.”

All’s Not Fair in Love and War

When people try to put human faces on the those affected by World War II, they often focus on Nazi rallies, the Holocaust, the Luftwaffe’s bombing of London, and the Japanese who survived the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In its dual capacities of documentary and narrative films, cinema has captured many historical moments (as well as producing some fine dramas set during World War II). Whether composing music for the 1952-1953 television series entitled Victory at Sea or the Broadway stage (South Pacific, The Sound of Music), Richard Rodgers made indelible contributions to how the effects of war were framed in people’s minds. His musical theme entitled “Beneath the Southern Cross” reappeared in Me and Juliet (which opened on Broadway on May 28, 1953 and ran for 358 performances). The show’s hit song, “No Other Love,” uses the same music.

Now that 70 years have passed since the end of World War II, it’s interesting to look at it from new perspectives. Although I doubt there was any collaboration between the two San Francisco summer festivals that did so, the results were fascinating.

* * * * * * * * * *

One of the documentaries featured in the 35th annual San Francisco Jewish Film Festival focused on the cinematic propaganda machine created by the United States Office of War Information. The agency’s efforts aimed at domestic audiences were obviously intended to support the war effort.

Newsreels and short films created for foreign markets (especially after the war’s end) were crafted to give the war’s battered survivors a more favorable impression of Americans and counter any prevailing negative stereotypes.

What most people don’t know is that the OWI’s newsreels were produced under the leadership of screenwriter Robert Riskin (who won an Oscar in 1935 for It Happened One Night) and was a frequent collaborator with director Frank Capra. Riskin was also married to Fay Wray (the star of 1933’s King Kong). Among the many talents that worked for the OWI were Aaron Copland, Alan Cranston, Lee Falk, Archibald MacLeish, Gordon Parks, James Reston, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., Robert Sherwood, and Josef von Sternberg, Without a doubt, the favorite OWI film shown around the world was 1943’s The Autobiography of a Jeep.

In retrospect, some of the OWI’s films may seem a bit campy to today’s audiences. Many, however, were translated into 20 languages and screened around the world. Narrated by John Lithgow, Peter Miller’s documentary, Projections of America, pays tribute to the work of Riskin and the OWI’s secret film unit.

2015-07-31-1438304526-1922562-projectionsamerica1.jpg

Poster art for Projections of America

Because of the film’s dual narrative (covering Riskin’s marriage as well as the demands of his work for the government), Projections of America is a oddly compelling documentary which packs a lot of history into 52 minutes. Here’s the trailer:

* * * * * * * * * *

Stock footage from World War II (such as the material included in the following clip) plays a major role in the design and dramatic exposition of Two Women, a new opera by Marco Tutino (with lyrics by Tutino and Fabio Ceresa) which received its world premiere from the San Francisco Opera in June. Directed by Francesca Zambello (whose integration of film into the San Francisco Opera’s recent production of Der Ring des Nibelungen was a major factor in its dramatic strength), Two Women’s use of archival film — combined with S. Katy Tucker’s projections — created a stunning solution to shaping a story about the brutalities of war and the misery of those who suffer through them.

A co-production with the Teatro Regio in Turin, the new opera is an adaptation of Vittoria De Sica’s 1960 film starring Sophia Loren, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Eleonora Brown, and Raf Vallone. Because the Music Critics Association of North America was in town for the world premiere, a great deal of copy was generated debating whether Tutino’s score should be called neo-Verismo, faux-Puccini, or mildly derivative.

Fuck that shit. Having attended far too many operatic premieres (which were not just musical duds, but crashing bores as well), I was thrilled to be fully engaged with a new piece of opera/musical theatre whose score positively yearns to be sung. Tutino’s orchestral interludes have a near-cinematic sweep. Even with a full orchestra, I never had the feeling that his writing overwhelmed (or ignored) the singers — an extremely rare achievement for a contemporary composer. This is passionate, theatrical, and highly accessible music free from the curse of academia.

In his conductor’s note (as told to Marina Romani), San Francisco Opera’s musical director, Nicola Luisotti, states:

“I am enthusiastic about composer Marco Tutino’s creation. This opera was born out of a conversation we had years ago, one evening in my house in Tuscany. I asked Marco, ‘You know which opera is missing today? La Ciociara (Two Women)!” Operatic elements were present already both in the novel and film. And why? Because of the presence of a heroine, Cesira, that comes from the people. Famous characters don’t need to have their stories told — history tells their stories. A popolana, a woman from the people, doesn’t have the same privilege. Cesira’s story is incredibly touching, but it would not have ended up on the front pages of the newspapers because it was nothing compared to the bombed cities and concentration camps of World War II. Yet, on stage, with the right music, the humblest stories become eternal. Cesira’s story becomes about us, about deeply understanding the personal suffering experienced during the war.”

(Anna Caterina Antonacci), are in a state of shock
after being raped in Two Women

“It is important in our time to write stories and music to which everybody can feel connected. I consider this to be an invitation to all artists: ‘Write the present while looking at the past to navigate the future,’ as Verdi said. For example, Marco’s music is rhythmically and harmonically complex, but at the same time, it is connected to bel canto. In his score, there are harmonic explosions in which you recognize yourself and say, ‘This is the music that belongs to me and speaks to what I am feeling!’ When Cesira sings a lullaby to her daughter after they are raped, she sings a song of how profoundly she feels the tragedy of their situation, and how much her daughter needs to sleep, and to forget — even just for half an hour.”

Traumatized by her rape, Cesira (Anna Caterina
Antonacci) cries before the villagers in Two Women

From a musical standpoint, the evening was a triumph for the singers as well as for the musicians in the pit. As Cesira, Anna Caterina Antonacci delivered a heartbreaking performance as the mother who leaves Rome, hoping to find a safer life for her child back in her home town, only to end up getting raped alongside her 16-year-old daughter. Sarah Shafer’s Rosetta was tenderly sung when her character was sane as well as subsequently, when she appeared to be mentally defeated and sexually starved following her rape.

Dimitri Pittas as Michele in Two Women (Photo by: Cory Weaver)

Dimitri Pittas made a smashing debut as Michele, the schoolteacher and tender-hearted intellectual whose concern for Cesira and Rosetta was a far cry from the brutish behavior of Giovanni. With a powerful tenor voice (which one hopes to hear more of in future seasons), Pittas commanded the audience’s attention whenever he was onstage. As Giovanni, Mark Delavan pretty much recycled his portrayal of Scarpia (the loathsome and similarly amoral villain from Puccini’s Tosca).

Making solid contributions in smaller roles were Eddie Nelson as John Buckley (a wounded American soldier); Joel Sorensen as the frightened Italian lawyer, Pasquale Sciortino; Buffy Baggott as his mother, Maria; Christian van Horn as the Nazi villain, Fedor von Bock; and Zanda Svede as Lena.

Peter Davison’s sets worked well as a framework for the stage action as well as the filmed projections with Jess Goldstein’s costumes adding plenty of local color. At the risk of spouting heresy, I have to admit that I was much more drawn to Tutino’s passionate writing for Two Women than I was to Hector Berlioz’s mammoth score for The Trojans. Here are some highlights from Tutino’s new opera:

Ellen Page Grills Ted Cruz While He Flips Pork At Fair

DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowans assume they’ll see plenty of familiar faces at their state fair as election season heats up, but witnessing a famous actress and a presidential candidate engage in a tense discussion over gay rights isn’t something most people expected.

As Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was grilling pork chops surrounded by media on Friday afternoon at the fair, actress Ellen Page, clad in a hat and oversized sunglasses, pushed her way to the front of the pack to ask the GOP presidential hopeful about discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

“LGBTQ people can be fired for just being gay, just being trans,” Page said. “How do you feel about that? That doesn’t sound very American to me.”

“At the end of the day, what we should not be doing is persecuting people,” Cruz replied, not appearing to recognize the Canadian actress.

 Watch the video above.

Page sought out the exchange, which occurred hours before Cruz’s religious freedom rally, for her Vice show called “Gaycation,” in which she shows how LGBT culture is perceived around the world. The Canadian actress came out as gay last year.

“I’m happy to answer your question, but not to have a back-and-forth debate,” Cruz said following one of Page’s interruptions.

“Religious freedom was often used to justify LGBTQ discrimination,” Page said, comparing the Texas senator’s argument to the one used to justify segregation. “A lot of religious people use the Bible to defend segregation.”

Cruz debated with Page about whether private business owners can refuse to serve customers based on religious beliefs, utilizing hypothetical scenarios but also citing an example of an Iowa couple who lost business after they refused to allow a same-sex couple to have their wedding at their venue.

“They were driven out of business … they laid off their employees.” Cruz said while flipping pork chops over a grill. “That is fundamentally wrong. It’s inconsistent with who we are.”

The two then got into a debate about gay right around the world.

“ISIS is executing gay people,” Cruz said. “Iran is executing homosexuals. On the left, you hear complete silence.”

“That’s not true,” Page interrupted.

“And yet, the Obama administration is sending over 100 billion dollars to a regime that murders homosexuals. That is fundamentally wrong,” Cruz continued.

The confrontation lasted a little over six minutes, abruptly ending as Cruz expressed his disapproval of the Obama administration’s lack of action on behalf of LGBT people who are being persecuted in other countries.

“In Iran, it is the governmental body that is executing them for being homosexual, and why does the Obama administration not stand against it?” Cruz asked.

“I don’t know; I would love to talk to Obama about that,” Page replied.

“Well, good, then we are agreed on it,” Cruz responded.

A Fair Way to Choose Candidates for Republican Debate: Learning From the Oscars

The Republican Party is holding its first presidential debate on August 6, to be televised on Fox News. Fox has decided against inviting all 17 declared presidential candidates to the main debate, and will limit inclusion to the 10 candidates with the highest average poll rating among five recent credible (if still undefined) national polls of Republican voters. The controversy over its decisions points to a better way: lessons from how the Oscars came to be nominated with the fair representation (or “proportional representation”) form of ranked choice voting.

With seven candidates to be relegated to a pre-debate forum in the afternoon — albeit an inclusive one for which Fox recently dropped its requirement of one percent standing in the polls — there is much controversy over criteria for inclusion. Some critics like Larry Sabato call for an expanded number of participants in at least this first debate, perhaps by randomly dividing the field into two debates to be held one after the other. Others suggest new standards to establish an even smaller field of the most credible candidates.

Cutting candidates certainly is not an easy call. Of the 17 Republicans, 14 are either a current or former governors or U.S. Senators, with two of the remaining three (Donald Trump and Ben Carson) sure to make Fox’s top 10. That leaves on the sidelines six prominent Republicans who have won statewide, along with the field’s only woman (businesswoman Carly Fiorina).

I’ll set aside the question of being as inclusive as possible and focus on a fairer way for Fox to pick its ten candidates. But first, let’s acknowledge the elephant in the living room. Even though the major parties go out of their way to be inclusive in debates during their nominating process, they have colluded to block any presidential candidates other than their own from general election debates.

With a board co-chaired by two prominent major party activists, the self-appointed Commission on Presidential Debates has established an indefensible debate inclusion rule for the general election that has kept all independents and minor parties out of the debates since Ross Perot’s first presidential run in 1992. It requires candidates to have an average of 15 percent in national polls despite the Catch-22 of such candidates being likely to be relegated to second-class media status in large part to the assumption they won’t be in the debates.

Applied to this year’s Republican field, the Commission’s 15-percent threshold would leave Fox’s stage with exactly one candidate: Donald Trump. The absurdity of that outcome underscores the case for broader debate inclusion, at least in the first Commission-sponsored debates. As a start, the call by Change the Rule for a process to guarantee a third voice in the debates, deserves strong support.

Anyone who thinks the Republican debate could be effective even when including just three of the current candidates as opposed to two of them should support Change the Rule’s call for changes for general election debates.

Let’s return to Fox’s Republican debate. As a start, consider a party’s goals for debates, such as:

• See how potential nominees articulate their policy proposals and hold up under pressure.

• Allow a full airing of the diversity of perspectives within the party.

• Attract as many potential voters to watch so that the party’s eventual nominee is stronger in the general election.

• Help identify the candidate best able to represent the party and win the general election.

Applying these criteria, it’s important not to have an overly majoritarian perspective in the early debates. While the ultimate nominee should reflect true majority support among party backers, these debates are a time to hear more voices within the party, not just echoes. Allowing the party’s diversity of views to have time on the stage means that those backing those views have more reason to watch — and ultimately care about and be invested in the eventual nominee.

So that means striking some ideas based on finding which 10 candidates comes closest to reflecting majority views within the party. For example, a poll could ask each respondent to select 10 candidates, and the top 10 would go to the debate. But this “winner-take-all” approach could block out important views within the party with passionate followers — for instance, a Rand Paul or Ben Carson.

For implications for rules for debate inclusion, let’s turn to people who know something about how to attract and hold an audience: the Academy of Motion Pictures, which organizes the Oscars every year to celebrate achievement in movies. Notably, eight decades ago the Academy adopted the practice for selecting all multiple nominees in all major categories with ranked choice voting (or, in wonk talk, “the single transferable vote”). Their goal was to have a system that maximized the number of Academy voters who felt they had a stake in the outcome on Oscar night – that is, the number who helped some person or movie get nominated.

Here’s how their ranked choice voting system works when selecting more than one winner:

• Academy voters rank potential nominees in a given category in order of preference. Every voter has one vote, but ranks backups to help ensure their vote counts. For voters’, it’s literally as easy as 1-2-3.

• The share of the vote necessary to earn a nomination is determined. That threshold is the lowest share of the vote that only the winning number of candidates can achieve. When the Oscars have five nominees for Best Actor, that means it takes about 17% of the vote to be sure of winning a nomination – that’s because once five actors have 17%, there’s only 15% left for the next highest vote-getter. With 10 candidates getting to the debates, that means that 9.1% would do it.

• Right now, of course, few candidates have at least 9.1% support in the polls. The tallying process essentially simulates what happens in presidential caucuses. First, imagine if every voter were standing behind their favorite candidate. If your favorite has more than 9.1% support, then that candidate has earned in the debate, and some of you can go to your second choice. (More precisely, an equal portion of each ballot goes to the first choice for a total of 9.1%, and the remaining value of each ballot is added to the totals of the second choice.) Once all the votes have been counted for next choices, we’re now left with some winners and mostly candidates still short of the threshold. At that point, the last-place candidate is eliminated, and all that candidate’s votes are counted for the next choice on each ballot at full value. This process of distributing votes continues until 10 have been selected.

• For the Oscars, ranked choice voting means that some 83% of Oscar voters typically help elect a “candidate” in their category — best actor, best director and so on. (For Best Picture, they modified this counting process a few years ago when allowing an undefined number of movies to be nominated – still using a ranked ballot and still generally trying to make sure that as many Academy voters have a hand in nominating a process, but changing the specific counting rule.) For picking 10 candidates to debate, you’d have more than nine in ten Republicans feeling directly represented on stage, with most of the rest happy with one or more of the candidates.

For Fox, this process would mean not relying on the mathematically-questionable task of averaging five polls that will leave some candidates out due to a tiny difference that will be far less than the polls’ margin of error. Instead, they would do a single poll in which they ask respondent to rank the candidates in order of preference – asking people to rank 10 should be fine, and something most Republican voters would be ready to do at this point. We already see plenty of use of “second choice polling,” as I wrote about last week with Molly Rocket. This poll would be a time to push poll respondents to think more about the candidates in a survey that was focused only on the task of identifying candidates for the debate.

This same ranked choice process could be used as debates proceed. If they decide to narrow who’s on stage after Iowa and New Hampshire, for example, they could have Republicans living in states holding the next contests to use ranked choice voting to five debates, for example, and later on reduce the field to three or even two.

Going forward, Republicans would also be wise to use a ranked choice voting ballot in each primary and caucus to determine that contest’s real winner. Guides to parliamentary procedure like Robert’s Rules of Order recommend ranked choice voting when people can’t vote repeatedly in person, and hundreds of significant organizations do so –including nearly every political party in Canada and the United Kingdom, such as the Labor Party’s leadership contest right now. That is, when you establish your number of winners as one, it takes getting a majority of the vote in the final “instant runoff” round of counting to win. If maintaining his frontrunner status in polls, for example, Donald Trump would need to show he wins one-on-one against his toughest opponent.

That’s what the Oscars have been doing for Best Picture ever since they allowed up to 10 nominations. Instructively, they still allow a “plurality vote” when there are only five nominees in categories because it can make for good television- e.g., the “upsets” that keep people watching are almost always by a person or movie that is benefiting from a split in the majority. For Best Picture, however, the Academy decided it was more important to get the outcome right. That same calculus should govern how we vote for president, starting with large field nomination contests.

There’s probably not time for Fox to change its rules for August 6, but let’s hope organizers of upcoming debates find a better way to determine who’s on stage. Ranked choice voting would be a good place to start.

Tracy Morgan In Fair Health Condition After New Jersey Crash

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan has been upgraded to fair condition following the New Jersey highway crash that badly injured him and killed one of his friends, his spokesman said Monday.

“His personality is certainly starting to come back as well,” spokesman Lewis Kay said. The 45-year-old former “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” star suffered broken ribs and a broken leg in the June 7 crash on the New Jersey Turnpike. The crash killed fellow comedian James McNair and seriously injured two other people.

Prosecutors say Wal-Mart driver Kevin Roper’s truck hit Morgan’s limo. The Jonesboro, Georgia, resident has pleaded not guilty to death by auto and assault by auto charges.

A criminal complaint alleges Roper hadn’t slept for more than 24 hours before the accident when he swerved to avoid slowed traffic on the turnpike and plowed into Morgan’s limo.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, Arkansas, has not explained what Roper’s driving route was. It has said it believes he was in compliance with federal safety regulations.

Morgan’s assistant, Jeffrey Millea, of Shelton, Connecticut, has also been upgraded to fair condition, Kay said. Hospital officials said comedian Ardie Fuqua, of Jersey City, remains in critical condition.

1964 World’s Fair Towers Could Be Torn Down As NYC Debates Future Of Queens Icons

NEW YORK (AP) — They were designed for the 1964 World’s Fair as sleek, space-age visions of the future: three towers topped by flying-saucer-like platforms, and a pavilion of pillars with a suspended, shimmering roof that was billed as the “Tent of Tomorrow.”

That imagined tomorrow has come and gone. Now the structures are abandoned relics, with rusted beams, faded paint and cracked concrete. As the fair’s 50th anniversary approaches, the remains of the New York State Pavilion are getting renewed attention, from preservationists who believe they should be restored, and from critics who see them as hulking eyesores that should be torn down. Neither option would come cheap: an estimated $ 14 million for demolition and $ 32 million to $ 72 million for renovation.

“It is the Eiffel Tower of Queens,” says Matthew Silva, who’s making a documentary about the pavilion in Queens’ Flushing Meadows Corona Park, comparing it to a remnant of the 1889 Paris Exposition that was also threatened with demolition before it was saved.

Designed by famed architect Philip Johnson, the New York structures debuted with the rest of the World’s Fair on April 22, 1964, and quickly became among its most popular attractions.

Visitors rode glass “Sky Streak” elevators to the observation deck of a 226-foot tower — the highest point in the fair. The two shorter towers, at 150 and 60 feet, held a cafeteria and a VIP lounge.

The pavilion’s 16, 100-foot-tall concrete columns supported what was then the largest suspended roof in the world, a 50,000 square-foot expanse of translucent, multicolored tiles. On the floor below was a $ 1 million, 9,000-square-foot terrazzo tile map of the state, with details of cities, towns and highways.

In the years after the fair, the pavilion was used as a music venue for such acts as Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead and Fleetwood Mac. In the ’70s, it became a roller skating rink until the collapse of the ceiling tiles, leaving only bare cables behind.

The towers, while still structurally sound, were abandoned as observation decks long ago for safety reasons. Their retro-futuristic look has been most widely known from its use in such movies as “Men in Black” and “Iron Man 2.”

Although occasionally opened for tours, the towers and pavilion — the last major structures still standing from the World’s Fair that have not been preserved — have largely served as a stoic landmark for travelers on the Van Wyck Expressway. Two pad-locked gates — one chain-link, one metal — keep the Tent of Tomorrow shuttered.

“It should be called the ‘Tent of Yesterday,'” says Ben Haber, who lives near the park. “This is not the Parthenon, it’s not the Sphinx, it’s not the pyramids. … So what’s so special that we should keep it?”

At the heart of the debate is the cost. While the city’s Parks Department commissioned studies on the cost of scrapping or renovating the complex, it is still unclear where that money would come from and, if restored, how the structures would be used. If the money comes through, work on the city-owned pavilion could begin as early as next year once officials make a decision.

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz has formed a task force dedicated to preserving the pavilion, noting that other structures from the World’s Fair have been saved, most notably the 12-story-tall metal globe called the Unisphere, the Hall of Science and the Queens Museum.

Among the ideas are to convert the towers once again into observation decks or an elevated garden or even a platform for bungee jumping, with the open-air pavilion turned into a performance space with a removable stage and bleachers.

While that debate plays out, a small group of World’s Fair buffs has formed to repaint the pavilion so it can be open to the public briefly for an April 22 anniversary event. The towers will still be off limits.

“I just loved this pavilion,” says 63-year-old volunteer painter John Piro. “And as the years went on I saw it decay and it just like tore my heart.”

Haber, the Queens resident, argues that nostalgia is fine, but the cost of saving the complex is just too much.

“Urban parks are the backyards for people who don’t have them — so they can sit on the grass, look at trees, flowers, water,” Haber says. “They do not want to look at glass, steel and cement structures.”
