Charlie DePew Dishes On ‘Famous In Love’ And Bella Thorne

Freeform’s “Famous In Love” was everyone’s guilty pleasure TV series this spring. The show featured rising star Charlie DePew who played Jake Salt, an aspiring screenwriter who’s best friends with Bella Thorne’s character. We chatted with DePew about the series’ dramatic twists and turns, his love of social media and the actor that’s inspired his career.

A post shared by Charlie DePew (@charliedepew) on

What’s the best part about being in “Famous in Love”?

The juicy drama. In a teen drama like this, it’s a little more soapy. Usually in TV you don’t get drama that’s this exaggerated. There’s a lot of conflict that wouldn’t happen in a usual storyline and I kind of like that. There’s all these plot twists and turns. Another reason why I like it so much is I’m a mega-fan of “Entourage,” so I really like playing the teen girl version of that.

What do you and your character Jake Salt have in common? What makes you different?

Well, Jake is very ambitious and motivated, and I would say I’m the same. I think Jake is a little more straight-edge than I am. I like to have a lot of fun and go to music festivals and that kind of thing, which I don’t think Jake would ever do. He’s a little too much of a nice boy and he’s also a little more earnest. I’m much more of an assertive person. If I like something or don’t like something, I’m usually more open about it. But Jake and I definitely do share traits as far as ambition and motivation goes. And we’re both screenwriters. I got almost halfway through a degree in screenwriting at USC, and I still am a writer. I still have a few scripts, but I don’t write with the passion and tenacity that I used to.

You and Bella Thorne have undeniable chemistry. What’s it like working with her?

We knew each other before “Famous in Love,” but we weren’t close. We would just see each other at birthdays. And then when I got cast in “Famous in Love,” we got closer. I have this straight-edge front, but then you take me to a festival and I’m the first one to be dancing in the mosh pit. I think she just liked that I let loose. We just kind of hit it off. We’re pretty close now.

A post shared by Charlie DePew (@charliedepew) on

“Famous in Love” seems like a really fun group of people to work with. Are you and the cast friends off-set?

It’s literally the perfect crew. I love everyone. They’re all amazing. They all have their own little thing that makes them awesome. We were all basically thrown in a room together and told to be friends. Luckily, with us, it worked.

What’s one of the biggest challenges you faced while filming “Famous In Love”?

I actually started a business two and a half years ago with a couple buddies called Respark, we do digital and social media marketing for companies. We basically own and manage a bunch of themed Instagram accounts that have over 150 million followers. We were in the middle of making an app right when we went to production. So I was thrown into this, and I still had to work and I was running double time to make sure everything got done. That was not easy, and managing expectations on both fronts was a challenge for sure.

Since Respark is all about managing massive Instagram pages, what’s one tip you have for anyone trying to build an Instagram following?

Themed accounts are a lot easier. You can just do shoutouts. You get bigger players to shout your page out and you shout them out, and then eventually you get 100 thousand followers. It’s a long process, but it works. For personal accounts, it’s just content. The more content you have, the better. Posting three times a day, your friends may hate it, but that will land you on the Explore page at some point. Keep your page consistent and make the content interesting and fun.

I. Marlene King produces “Famous In Love” and also “Pretty Little Liars.” What’s she like?

She’s legendary. She just knows what she’s doing all the time. She knows exactly what needs to be done and she gets it done. And that’s the mark of a legend, in my opinion. I just like her ideas for making the characters’ choices unpredictable. It’s one of her best traits when it comes to writing.

A post shared by Charlie DePew (@charliedepew) on

Let’s talk about your upcoming movie “The Bachelors.” This is totally different from your TV show. What can fans expect to see?

They can expect a completely different Charlie. The role I have in that is polar opposite of Jake. It was really fun to play, but he’s a complete d**k in the movie. I play the bully character to the lead kid. There’s a scene in the cafeteria where we get into this brawl and it’s so well-shot. It’s very cool.

What was it like working with Oscar winner J.K. Simmons on “The Bachelors?”

I’m pretty honest when people ask me about actors and how they are. He’s a nice person. He’s just quiet. He’s very focused and into his work. He was amazing though. He pulls it out of thin air and at a moment’s notice he’s crying or knocking his head against the wall. He’s really good.

Who’s an actor that inspires your career?

Heath Ledger, for sure. I think one of the huge things that propelled me to act is I was really quick with impressions. Ever since I was a kid, I could get an accent down or get somebody’s voice down. Right after “The Dark Knight” came out, within a day or two I had The Joker impression pretty much locked down. I’d do it at school and my friends thought it was the coolest thing ever. From there I ended up going out for the sixth grade play.

What’s one piece of advice you wish you could have given yourself when you first started your acting career?

Just prepare more. Early on, I wasn’t always prepared going into auditions, but every single one is an opportunity so you have to make sure you do your best for each one.

If you could guest star on any TV show right now, what would it be?

“Game of Thrones.”

What are you most proud of having worked on so far?

My company, Respark.

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?

At this very moment I want to go to Hawaii. I’ve never been!

If you could have dinner with any three celebrities, dead or alive, who would they be?

Leonardo da Vinci, Nikola Tesla and Michael Faraday.

Bill Cosby’s Face On Famous D.C. Mural Replaced With 15 Black Stars

Ben’s Chilli Bowl in D.C. is a restaurant known for its famous cooking and brick mural that features famous black stars including Bill Cosby ― that was, until Wednesday.

The restaurant unveiled a brand new mural during a special ceremony Wednesday morning that showed 15 other famous black stars where Cosby used to be. The original mural, which debuted in 2012, also featured local musician Chuck Brown, local radio personality Donnie Simpson and then-President Barack Obama but the painting of Cosby drew heavy criticism, and had even been defaced after dozens of women came forward with allegations of sexual assault against the comedian. (Cosby was charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault in a case involving Temple University employee Andrea Constand which ended in a mistrial last week.)

The mural, by artist Aniekan Udofia, now includes First Lady Michelle Obama, Muhammad Ali, abolitionist Harriet Tubman and singers like Chuck Brown, Gladys Knight, and Prince as well as contemporary artists like actress Taraji Henson, comedian Dave Chappelle and rapper Wale.

Chapelle  attended the ceremony to celebrate the new artwork and to express how honored he felt to be included.

Those selected to be featured on the new mural were chosen through an online voting process that attracted more than 30,000 votes from across the world, according to Washington City Paper. It is expected to stay for at least the next five years.

13 Awesome Baby Names That Pay Tribute To Famous Icons

We know that celebrities inspire popular baby names, from Audrey (Hepburn) to (John) Lennon. But celebrities also choose famous names for their children, with actors and musicians paying homage to legendary stars with their name choices.

Our report on this trend from a few years back highlighted picks like Mariah Carey’s Monroe and guitarist Slash’s Cash.

The trend hasn’t slowed down one bit! Those names remain in the headlines, but there’s a whole new class of celebrity baby names inspired by stars.

Bowie

Baby name Bowie made our original list, thanks to Rebecca Minkoff’s daughter, Bowie Lou. Since then, Zoe Saldana has welcomed a son named Bowie, as have Tess Holliday, and Dane DeHaan and Anna Wood. One reason for the acceleration? The early 2016 passing of music legend David Bowie has put this musical surname in the same class as Marley and Hendrix.

Presley

Jackson Rathbone’s younger child carries a doubly musical name: Presley Bowie. The middle is both a family name and a tribute to the late singer. Rathbone noted that Presley combines their family’s Southern heritage with a rockabilly vibe. After all, when the “Twilight” star isn’t acting, he’s also a musician. They’re not the first family to name a baby after Elvis: nearly 2,000 newborn Presleys entered the world in 2015 alone.

Etta

Carson Daly and Siri Pinter welcomed daughter Etta in 2012, just a few months after legendary singer Etta James passed away. Jazzy and sophisticated, Etta makes a logical successor to favorites Emma and Ella. It’s currently right outside of the U.S. Top 1000 list, but has risen steadily over the last few years.

Arlo

Legendary folk singer Arlo Guthrie’s unusual given name has become a rising favorite with plenty of parents. Leighton Meester and Adam Brody gave the name to a daughter; so did Johnny Knoxville. But we like this best for a boy, as chosen by actress Toni Collette, and more recently, English musician Charlie Simpson.

Axl

Fergie’s name for her young son came to her in a dream. The singer imagined herself watching legendary Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose perform at a festival. When she awoke, she and husband Josh Duhamel instantly knew it was the name for their son. Traditional Scandi Axel has history galore, but lately rock ‘n’ roll Axl is trending, too.

Greta

Count Greta as an early starbaby example of the trend – Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates gave name to a daughter years ago; so did David Caruso. But Ty Burrell of “Modern Family” puts Greta on the list of recent celebrity baby name picks. It brings to mind screen legend Greta Garbo, fitting right in with girls called Audrey and Ava.

Harlow

Nicole Richie chose a glam girl name when she and Joel Madden welcomed their daughter in 2008. Harlow comes from Jean, the original Blonde Bombshell of the 1930s silver screen. Plenty of other parents followed her lead, sending the name soaring. In 2015, “American Idol” alum Kimberly Caldwell welcomed a daughter with a double dose of blonde ambition: Harlow Monroe.

Hemingway

Parents love literary Harper and Holden. No surprise we’re looking for similar inspiration. Ben Hollingsworth of “Code Black” chose a little-used literary surname for his son last year: Hemingway, as in Ernest. The author is remembered for his writing, but also for his love of travel and sense of adventure. It makes a powerful combination for a child’s name.

Dusty

Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo have yet to confirm the reasons behind their daughter’s distinctive name ― though we know that Ellen DeGeneres suggested Dusty. Could it be inspired by 1960s icon Dusty Springfield, who recorded hits like “I Only Want to Be With You” and “Son of a Preacher Man”? It’s a fitting choice for the daughter of a singer and a supermodel.

Everly

The Everly Brothers were among the first class of musicians inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 1986. Anthony Kiedis, frontman for 2012 inductees Red Hot Chili Peppers, was among the first to use the name, for a son in 2007. But it’s Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan who sent the name skyrocketing, after they welcomed daughter Everly in 2013.

Isley

Glenn Howerton of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” fame solved the baby naming puzzle when he heard a song by the Isley Brothers. With singles like “This Old Heart of Mine” and “It’s Your Thing,” the brothers scored a string of hits in the 1960s and 70s. Today, their surname name fits right in with names like Riley, Miles, and even Isaac and Isaiah.

Montgomery

Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen prove that Old Hollywood works for boys’ names, too. The couple named their third child, and first son, Montgomery in 2015. A year later, “The Young and the Restless” actor Greg Rikaart also gave the name to a son. Oscar-nominated actor Montgomery Clift used the nickname Monty; so do these newest little stars.

Ozzie

Max Greenfield is yet another dad to find a name that nods to his musical hero – Ozzy Osbourne. Son Ozzie James arrived in 2015. In an interview, Greenfield joked that it was an appropriate name in case his son turned out to be “a maniac.” Osbourne himself was born the much milder John Michael.

An entire book of good stories. . [Leung] gains trust the old-fashioned way-through confidence, craftsmanship and compassion. There are no shortcuts here, no tricks or gimmicks, no glib patinas to conceal weak underpinnings. . This is a book about loss, twined irrevocably with hope, a hope that surges below the surface of all life. . Read [it] and see a bold new writer making himself vulnerable on the page. He gives us all hope.”-Chris OffuttSweeping and fearless, World Famous Love Acts overrides stereotypes of race, age, gender, and sexuality. In this remarkable debut collection, Brian Leung creates a diverse landscape of distinctive characters. Among them, a 4′ 10″ hyperblonde Asian adult-film actress in Los Angeles, an archeologist working in China with her sun-scarred skin, a Midwestern screenwriter trying to “burn off” his accent, and a man with AIDS waiting to go home to die. Loneliness and a persistent reach for meaning and comfort hold all these characters together. In “Six Ways to Jump off a Bridge,” a Chinese egg-farmer confronts the solitude of old age after learning yet another person has made a suicidal jump from the bridge overlooking his home. In “Executing Dexter,” two young boys from broken homes invent ways to torture and kill handmade dolls. And “Leases” takes place during “the time of morning to choose names for babies that will never be born” as a man waits to meet his wife in an apartment where for years he has brought male lovers. Brian Leung writes like a true anthropologist, as both passionate outsider and gifted empath. His prose is crafted but genuine, both controlled and embracing. There seem to be no shoes he won’t try on as he poignantly brings to life the search for a world of rescue and absolution. Born to a Chinese father and Euro-American mother, Brian Leung is a native of California, where he is now an assistant professor at California State University, Northridge. Dallas Is Where I Finally Get to See The Famous French “Déjeûner sur L’herbe” Painting By Monet

2016-11-24-1480010837-9205425-dejeunersurlherbe2parties.jpg

Dallas-Fort Worth.

One could possibly think that the Dallas-Fort Worth appellation is just an indication of a big twin megapolis, when in fact, as I discovered Sunday, it’s two very distinct cities, not even remotely touching, with a Grand Prairie in-between – grande prairie means large field in French.

So it took me an hour to drive from Dallas to Fort Worth Arts District to reach the Kimbell Museum.

Needless to say, I was starving when I reached the museum. True fact is that I always eat first at art exhibits, firstly because I am always starving, and secondly because museums have the best cafés and shops.

The Kimbell has a unique flat rate fee for plates of three sizes – small, medium, and large. The menu is the same for all. But you pay by the size of your plate. Some people have mastered the art of piling up tons of food in a precarious balance on their plate. I saw some lunchers with a small plate who had more food than me on my medium one.

Was it “worth” it?

But I digress. Claude Monet is one of these great French painters that everyone knows. They may not know his name but will recognize his art. He is a familiar painter with a subdued and sweet domestic life that accompanied his paintings all his life. His paintings of Venice, London, and Paris are vital witnesses to the cities’ daily landscapes.

Organized in collaboration with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, thanks to loans from 10 countries, and a handful of private collectors, the show offers a unique view of the early years of the master, starting when he was 17 years old and painted the “View at Rouelles” where he lived.

All the paintings presented at the Kimbell are from Monet’s early years and have seldom been seen in museums. The precious exhibit is a must-see for lovers of impressionists’ work.

Le Déjeûner sur l’Herbe.

My favorite Monet piece is the whimsical lunch on the grass, for its romantic setting, the fashion so beautifully described, and the funky story of its missing part. You will only see two pieces of this large painting at the Kimbell, as this is the only remaining parts of the massive representation of a lunch in the woods. Monet explained how the painting got cut up and subsequently gone shorter:

“I had to pay my rent, I gave it to the landlord as security and he rolled it up and put in the cellar. When I finally had enough money to get it back, as you can see, it had gone moldy.”

When his landlord finally gave it back, Monet cut it up and kept only three pieces – but the third part has now disappeared.

Pricey grain stacks.

The auction house Christie in New York just sold last week the piece “Grain stack” for a hefty $ 81.4 million, when the hope was to sell it for half of that. I won’t tell you who bought it, because it’s a secret – the 1891 canvas was won by an anonymous collector bidding over the telephone.

The wheat stack sold is not at the Kimbell, but a couple of the series of about 20 stacks canvases are on view – better hurry to see them before they sell for millions and vanish into some lucky private living room!

2016-11-24-1480010925-9365746-monet.jpg

Another Monet had already set a record for the painter; his “Water Lily Pond” was sold for $ 80.4 million in 2008. The 19-part elliptical painting of the “Nymphéas” is another familiar sight for many. A special studio was built for the size of his project, and he devoted the rest of his life to the large masterpiece.

We are treading far away from cutting up paintings to pay the rent! If only Monet could see the frenzy of collectors around his art today.

Claude Monet was a great impressionist master – good at drawing, and even better at rendition of material such as clouds, water, and snow. Friends with Renoir, his flowers show the influence the other master had on him.

” Qu’y a-t-il à dire de moi ? Que peut-il y avoir à dire, je vous le demande, d’un homme que rien au monde n’intéresse que sa peinture – et aussi son jardin et ses fleurs ?”

(What is there to say about me? What can possibly be said, I am asking you, about a man that nothing in the world interests except his painting – and also his garden, and his flowers?)

Famous After Death: A Novel

Famous After Death: A Novel

Noel Hammersmith used to have dreams of fame as a playwright, not to mention personal happiness. But in 1984 his girlfriend has just decamped, he’s putting on poundage by the day, and his literary success stems from the self-help tomes he edits at Acropolis Books–an outfit he can’t help calling Necropolis. Yes, this New Yorker is a dab hand at acquiring and then whittling down titles such as The All-Poison Diet and the stroke-of-genius alphabet series (which includes H Is for Hemorrhoid and P Is for Premature Ejaculation). What he’s not so good at is keeping his own weight–and consumerist obsessions–under control. As the hero of Benjamin Cheever’s Famous After Death becomes increasingly preoccupied with false advertising and corporate irresponsibility, he mounts a hilarious letter-writing campaign. Suffice it to say that the discontinuation of the Brooks Brothers Blue and the culinary degradation of Gerber Baby Food are very much on Noel’s mind. But there are hints that he’s involved in a deadlier sideline. Is he in fact the infamous Wordsworth Bomber, a man for whom “quality control was an issue worth killing people for”? Cheever’s third novel is an artful mix of Noel’s correspondence and journals. His transcriptions of his psychiatric visits alone are worth the price of admission. But this burlesque is also a serious–and seriously funny–examination of the distance between our values and the goods we seem to value more. Of course, in an

Well, according to Us Weekly, the 28-year-old posed for the Kardashian-inspired pic in honor of her husband Spencer Pratt’s 32nd birthday.

That’s love, guys. That, right there, is love.

The 7 Famous Hats That Rocked Pop Culture

Hats are an under-appreciated accessory (unless you’re Kate Middleton, in which case they’re constantly celebrated). While they might not get a lot of shelf space in our own closets, they’ve commanded our collective attention plenty when it comes to pop culture, celebrity, and news moments.

jackie-kennedy-pillbox-hat
First Jackie Kennedy’s most iconic item? Easily the pillbox hat.

blossom-tv-show-hat
You’re not alone if your elementary school self had a fascination with floppy, flower-topped crusher hats. Credit goes to Mayim Bialik, who made the accessory all her own on Blossom.

The most talked-about beret—ever—belonged to Monica Lewinsky.

Clueless had multiple hat moments, but top prize goes to Stacey Dash’s Dion, who brought it with bold colors and big shapes.

When Kate Middleton and Prince William got married, hats were everywhere. None received as much commentary as the one Princess Beatrice chose, which elicited comparisons to a certain part of the female anatomy.

Never has a hat been such a red carpet conversation-starter as the Vivienne Westwood number Pharrell chose for last year’s Grammys.

Isiah Whitlock Jr. Will Teach You His Famous ‘Wire’ Catchphrase

Senator Clay Davis is back to teach you how to say “Sheee-it.” In a new YouTube trailer for “Whitlock Academy,” actor Isiah Whitlock Jr., who starred as Davis on “The Wire,” instructs students how to say his character’s famous catchphrase.

“Heh, heh, heh, what is the Whitlock Academy?” the actor said in an interview with the Baltimore Sun on Tuesday. “It’s where actors come to finish their training. We’ve basically decided that no actor’s training is complete until they properly learn to be able to say the word, ‘sheeeeeeeee-it.'”

“I would just say, over the next couple of weeks, we’ll let it roll out and see how people respond to it,” he continued.

More information can be found on the Whitlock Academy website. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee …

Watch Unearthed Footage Of A Teenage Katy Perry Before She Was Famous

“I have lots of songs to write about. Lots of things to write about.” So says a teenage Katy Perry — then Katy Hudson — in a newly unearthed video from 2001 posted to Vimeo by award-winning cinematographer and videographer Jim Standridge.

“I was very fortunate to meet and hangout with this genuine talent in the beginning of her career,” Standridge wrote in a note accompanying the video. “The other day I was cleaning out some old footage in my office and found 90 minutes of raw footage I had totally forgot about. […] I think Katy has grown into an amazing entertainer and woman.”

Standridge cut the 90 minutes down to just under 13, and the package showcases Perry’s preternatural talent. Then a Christian singer-songwriter, Perry’s work has an unmistakable Alanis Morisette vibe, but there are some guitar licks that also sound a little like early Radiohead (specifically from “The Bends”). The video closes, appropriately, with Perry singing “Last Call,” one of the tracks from her 2001 album, “Katy Hudson.”

HuffPost Entertainment contacted a representative for Perry to see if the singer had any comment or remembrance about the video. This post will be updated if and when they respond. In the meantime, watch Standridge’s video below.

We’re Pretty Sure These Famous People Are Aliens

Today happens to be World UFO Day, so forgive us if we seem a little more alert than usual about who walking among us may or may not be… of this world. We’ve quietly been collecting our evidence, and feel pretty confident in questioning the origins of the following “people.”

Ryan Seacrest: Definitely An Alien
Consider the Evidence:

1. Let’s get the obvious out of the way: The man has like 20 jobs. When does he sleep? Or even worse, binge-watch a TV show?

2. He just signed a deal with CBS, so now he’ll have hosting gigs on all 4 major networks. Whether you like it or not, you’re going to be seeing a lot of Seacrest. Evil master plan much?

3. The man lives off Crest White Strips. Stare too long and he’ll blind you with his smile.

2014-07-01-showImage.jpg

4. Fellow aliens Brad and Angelina refuse to acknowledge his existence, because the number one rule of alien life is to not talk about alien life.

2014-07-01-brangelinaseacrest.gif

5. 500 episodes of American Idol later and he still hasn’t grown tired of screechy renditions of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” He must be an alien.

Kelly Lin

Chris Harrison: Probably An Alien
Consider the Evidence:

1. He lacks the cognitive dissonance an actual human would experience from explaining how the exploitation of people’s emotions for commercial and personal profit is really about finding the One.

2. He convinces otherwise sane contestants that it’s not only possible, but probable, that they will find true love in a group of 25 people who are hand-picked to cause trouble.

3. His buoyant mannerisms and weird elocution are a little too…deliberate? Practiced?

4. Real humans can’t compete on Chris Harrison’s level of professional amiability.

5. Every week, when there’s only one rose left and everyone in the room is fixated on it, Chris Harrison steps out from the shadows and tells everyone there’s one rose left. He’s done this for almost 20 years.

Katherine Rea

James Franco: 100% An Alien
Consider the Evidence:

1. This photo from James Franco’s Instagram:

2. This photo from James Franco’s Instagram:

3. This photo from James Franco’s Instagram:

4. This photo from James Franco’s Instagram:

5. This photo from James Franco’s Instagram:

And what better cover than playing a character called “Alien?”

Naivasha Dean

Stephen Colbert: Almost Certainly An Alien
Consider the Evidence:

1. Extreme Intelligence: A recent report showed that viewers of The Colbert Report are more well-informed about political and social issues than viewers of “legitimate” news programs on ABC or CNN. Most alien experts agree that our interplanetary friends have a level of intelligence far beyond human capabilities. Of course, this could also mean that regular Colbert Report viewers are being groomed for abduction, but hey, at least we know that the alien anal probers from Colbert’s species will be well-informed on the process.

2. Superhuman Physical Abilities: The ability to arch only one eyebrow has long been considered an extraterrestrial trait by those of us “two-browers.” The single-brow arch is clearly a genetic mutation of out-of-this-world proportions. We’re looking at you, too, Chris Hardwick.

3. Immunity From Human Disease: Think about it. Have you EVER seen Colbert get sick? Ever? What kind of “regular” human being can consume Bud Light Lime on a regular basis on air and still not get sick?

4. Love of Space: In 2009, Colbert started a public campaign urging his viewers to vote for the new treadmill on the International Space Station to be named after him. Colbert won in a landslide. The real question is: Why was this campaign so important to him? Is it a message to his extraterrestrial cohorts that he’s officially “in control” of the human race and ready for the overlords to move in?

5. Focused on Global Domination: Most human comedians would be more than happy to live out their days on a mega-hit show on basic cable. But Stephen Colbert is making the jump from his cushy Comedy Central spot to the highly precarious network late night battle. Why? Because he desires complete global domination for himself and his kind — and basic cable just doesn’t have that kind of distribution.

Liz Brown

January Jones: Definitely An Alien
Consider the Evidence:

1. From Betty Draper to Emma Frost, she has the ability to play every character
with perfect woodenness every time — and get away with it. This is a superb kind of mind control.

2. Is she emotionally and intellectually distant or is she just having trouble connecting with a different species?

3. She has a baby, but no one really knows where “he” came from.

4. She is way too gorgeous for her own good. She could be an alien that took over Grace Kelly’s body.

5. She’s suspiciously enthusiastic about eating her own placenta.

Sheila Dichoso

Stephen Amell: Probably An Alien
Consider the Evidence:

1. His face is oddly, perfectly symmetrical.

2014-07-01-Amell.jpg

2. No real human enjoys the kind of workouts he participates in regularly.

2014-07-01-salmon2.gif

3. He’s a little too comfortable lurking around in a cape.

4. He’s a little too savvy with social media for your average celeb.

5. Have you seen his abs?

Raef Harrison

Heidi Klum: A Very Pretty Alien
Consider the Evidence:

1. No human should be able to maneuver so gracefully with those endlessly long limbs.

2. She still looks flawless in her 40s (well, in human years.)

3. Her scientifically immeasurable ratio of sexy to cute.

4. When she says “auf wiedersehen” you know she’s talking to her people on her home planet.

5. Whether “you’re in or you’re out,” she’s certainly out of this world.

Note: On her home planet, she’s barely considered an 8.

Richard Ogawa

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Yup, An Alien
Consider the Evidence:

1. He is waaaaay too well-adjusted to have been an actual child actor.

2. Perfect lip synching to Nicki Minaj? Definitely some other-worldly abilities going on there.

2014-07-01-JGLMinaj.gif

3. He collaborates with actual unknowns. In Hollywood. Real famous people don’t do that.

4. No human actor could so successfully go method for “David After Dentist.”

2014-07-01-JGLDAD.gif

5. His best-known TV role was an alien. What better disguise than to hide in plain sight?

Kristin Knox

David Lynch: Are You Kidding? Alien.
Consider the Evidence:

1. Mr. Lynch’s comic instincts and timing are “real good.” As though he has been watching from afar for a long time.

2014-07-01-1LouisCKLynch.jpg

2. His signature cup of coffee: It’s organic. Fairly traded. And delicious. So good, it’s hard to believe it comes from Earth.

2014-07-01-2Coffee.jpg

3. His perfect hair. It controls the weather. But can hair that controls the weather and defies gravity be from Earth? No — Earth hair must choose one or the other.

2014-07-01-3PerfectHair.jpg

4. His debut feature film, Eraserhead. The baby in the movie looks like the alien version of E.T. That’s because, unlike E.T. (who was actually born to tax-payers in Cleveland), this baby’s daddy doesn’t call Earth his home.

2014-07-01-4AlienEraserhead.jpg

5. HIs hit television series, Twin Peaks. Its popularity. Its coffee. Its pie. As agent Dale Cooper might say, “Diane, this cultural phenomenon begs a profound existential question. Is Mr. Lynch the alien? Or are we? In other words, is the space out there? Or in here?” He might say that, but he didn’t. Because the answer is obvious. Mr. Lynch is an alien. And space is a conspiracy.

Maria Von Trapp Dead: Last Surviving Member Of Famous Musical Family Dies At 99

STOWE, Vt. (AP) — Maria von Trapp, the last surviving member and second-eldest daughter of the musical family whose escape from Nazi-occupied Austria was the basis for “The Sound of Music,” has died. She was 99.

Von Trapp died at her home in Vermont on Tuesday, according to her brother Johannes von Trapp. “She was a lovely woman who was one of the few truly good people,” he said. “There wasn’t a mean or miserable bone in her body. I think everyone who knew her would agree with that.”

Maria von Trapp was the last surviving member of the seven original Trapp Family Singers made famous in “The Sound of Music.” She was portrayed as Louisa in the 1959 Broadway musical and a 1965 film, which won the Oscar for best picture.

She was the third child and second-oldest daughter of Austrian Naval Capt. Georg von Trapp and his first wife, Agathe Whitehead von Trapp. Their seven children were the basis for the singing family in the musical and film.

“The Sound of Music” was based loosely on a 1949 book by von Trapp’s second wife, also Maria von Trapp, who died in 1987. It tells the story of an Austrian woman who married a widower with seven children and teaches them music.

In 1938, the family escaped from Nazi-occupied Austria and performed concert tours throughout Europe and then a three-month tour in America. The family settled in Vermont in the early 1940s and opened a ski lodge in Stowe.

Von Trapp played accordion and taught Austrian dance with sister Rosmarie at the lodge.

She wrote in a biography posted on the Trapp Family’s website that she was born in the Austrian Alps after her family fled fighting from World War I and that she was surrounded by music growing up.

“Father played the violin, accordion and mandolin. Mother played piano and violin,” she wrote. “I have fond memories of our grandmother playing the piano for us after meals.”

Her biography on the website also said that she worked as a lay missionary in Papua, New Guinea.

Rosmarie von Trapp, Johannes von Trapp and Eleonore Von Trapp Campbell were born to Georg von Trapp and Maria von Trapp.

Enid Blyton: Biography of the Author Behind Noddy, The Famous Five, and The Secret Seven

Enid Blyton: Biography of the Author Behind Noddy, The Famous Five, and The Secret Seven

ABOUT THE BOOK Enid Blyton (1897-1968) stands as one of the most popular childrens book writers of the 20th century. Her legacy continues through a devoted fan base of those who grew up with her stories of inquisitive children getting into misadventures in the English countryside. Blyton also appealed to younger readers with her Noddy series, about a little boy made out of wood who lives in Toytown; the series produced a total of 24 books and a string of popular TV series. The appeal of Blytons books for older readers, from ages eight to 12, was primarily the lack of parental supervision or interference; in the Famous Five books, the indulgent aunt and uncle generally let the kids go off, unaccompanied in caravans or on camping trips across the moors at the ripe old ages of 14 though 16. MEET THE AUTHOR Paula Whiteside is currently a freelance writer for several web content providers, as well as the copy editor for Wine Business Monthly, an international industry magazine located in the Sonoma Valley Wine Country. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Although her academic career was promising, her parents marriage was not as stable. Enid later recalled nights when she would comfort her brothers at the top of the stairs as their parents loudly argued below. Her father left her mother for his secretary at the wholesale clothing business he managed when Enid was 13. To keep up appearances, the children, when asked, would tell neighbors that he was away on a visit. Enid later used this ruse as the premise for her book The Six Bad Boys, which Blyton biographer, Barbara Stoney, called an unusual attempt for Enid at social realism.” With her greatest ally gone from the home, young Enid began writing as a way to escape her mother. This most likely contributed to her prolific writing output as an adult, writing up to 10,000 words a day. The young Blyton also entertained her brothers by telling them stories, made up rhymes, wrote in her diary and read prodigiously. Her work and deter

Jay Shells Posts Famous Rap Quotes Around Los Angeles In Clever Street Art Project

Get excited, California. Because artist Jay Shells has taken to Los Angeles with his clever guerrilla street sign installation, “Rap Quotes.”

New York art blog ANIMAL followed Shells as he cruised along the palm tree-lined streets of the Pacific coast city, placing his bright orange signs along the way. The declarations display quotes from famous hip hop artists like Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Warren G, and Notorious B.I.G., and are appropriately placed in the exact location the lyric calls out.

Take, for example, Warren G’s quote, “So I hooks a left on 2-1 and Lewis, some brothers shooting dice so I said ‘let’s do this,'” which can be seen on the corner of Lewis and 21st. Or Xzibit’s line, “Down La Cienega to bust a left on Venice where you can find me and mine,” which can of course be found on the corner of La Cienega and Venice.

The project aims to celebrate the roots of some of these artists as well as the cities that produce them. Shells previously took “Rap Quotes” to New York City, so we’re anxious to see which locale gets “signed” next. Feel free to speculate in the comments.

Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure

Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure

Deceptively simple and surprisingly addictive, "Not Quite What I Was Planning" is a thousand glimpses of humanity–six words at a time. When Ernest Hemingway famously wrote, "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn," he proved that an entire story can be told using a half-dozen words. When the online storytelling magazine SMITH asked readers to submit six-word memoirs, they proved a whole, real life can be told this way, too. The results are fascinating, hilarious, shocking, and moving. From small sagas of bittersweet romance ("Found true love, married someone else") to proud achievements and stinging regrets ("After Harvard, had baby with crackhead"), these terse true tales relate the diversity of human experience in tasty bite-size pieces. The original edition of "Not Quite What I Was Planning" spent six weeks on the "New York Times" bestseller list, and thanks to massive media attention–from NPR to the "The New Yorker"–the six-word memoir concept spread to classrooms, dinner tables, churches, synagogues, and tens of thousands of blogs. This deluxe edition has been revised and expanded to include more than sixty never-before-seen memoirs. From authors Elizabeth Gilbert, Richard Ford, and Joyce Carol Oates to celebrities Stephen Colbert, Mario Batali, and Joan Rivers to ordinary folks around the world, "everyone" has a six-word story to tell.
