John Stamos Shares Adorable New Photo of Son Billy in Honor of Father’s Day

John Stamos has played a longtime bachelor-turned-grandfather on Grandfathered and the beloved Uncle Jesse on Full House, but his most fulfilling role yet is being a dad to 2-month-old son Billy.

“My first Father’s Day means that I don’t have to hand a kid back to the parents when someone yells cut. It means when people ask me if I’m a father, I don’t have to use the goofy line, ‘No, but I play one on TV,’ ” Stamos said on Instagram Sunday along with an adorable father-son portrait.

“My first Father’s Day means that from this day forward— I will start to look my age (and older). Most importantly, it means that for the rest of my life, I’ll always be known as someone’s dad. And that’s all I ever wanted. Happy Father’s day,” he added.

Stamos became a father for the first time on April 10 when he and wife Caitlin McHugh welcomed their son William “Billy” Christopher into the world.

“Happy 1st Father’s Day to the best new daddy! I knew you’d be a great father, but you’ve exceeded expectations. You change diapers! Lol, and so much more, of course. We love you most,” McHugh said in a tribute to her husband on Instagram Sunday.

And after a celebratory Father’s Day weekend, Stamos is looking forward to spending more bonding time with his son.

The actor will be bringing Billy along on his first cross-country trip as the Fuller House star/producer returns to host PBS’s annual broadcast of A Capitol Fourth, the national 4th of July celebration in Washington, D.C.

It’ll be baby Stamos’ first cross-country excursion, coming on the heels of a slightly not-so-smooth local road trip.

“It was Mother’s Day and Caitlin’s birthday, so we went down to Laguna , and it was the first time we didn’t have a nanny — that was rough!” he told PEOPLE in late May. “ so far, it’s been a dream, and when I look at him, I feel like I’ve been thinking about that face for a long time.”

Stamos also said that fatherhood has been everything that he expected it would be, and it’s deepened his connection to his country.

“I always knew it was going to be like this,” he explained. “It took me longer than it should’ve, but I knew that I would be a family and be contributing to this country, and holding onto the morals and the values that my parents had, that I like to think of the world having. It’s a time to be kind and graceful to people. It just takes so much energy to block all the negativity. I’m really trying to get people together.”

Father’s Day Spending Expected to Hit $15.3 Billion This Year

Dads can expect a little less to be spent on them for Father’s Day this year.
According to a study by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics, spending on the holiday is projected to reach $ 15.3 billion this year, down just slightly from the $ 15.5 billion spent last year.
This translates into an average of $ 133 a person for the 77 percent of Americas who plan on celebrating the holiday on June 17. Individuals between 25 and 34 years of age are expected to spend the most, an average of $ 188.
“We are pleased to see consumer confidence continue to rise, leading to another near-record holiday spend on Father’s Day,” said NRF president and chief executive officer Matthew Shay. “Leading into the second half of the year, Americans are looking forward to treating their dads, and retailers will be prepared to offer a variety of gift options that will create new memories on this special day.”
According to the survey, consumers plan to spend $ 2.2 billion on apparel, which is expected to be purchased by 43 percent of shoppers; $ 2.1 billion on gift cards (42 percent), and $ 1.8 billion on consumer electronics (20 percent). In addition, $ 878 million will be spent on home

Bride Showered with Late Father’s Funeral Flowers at Wedding: ‘I Felt His Presence’

When Kait Olidis lost her father to cancer in 2015, she knew she wanted to honor him in a special way. So, she saved some of the roses that his beloved friends and family brought to his funeral, and kept them for just the right moment.

“They stayed tucked away until I figured that I wanted to incorporate them in my wedding,” Olidis, 28, tells PEOPLE. “Confetti is kind of one thing that’s a lot of fun during weddings when people are coming back down the aisle, so with all the rose petals that we did have, I thought it would be special to have them thrown at us.”

A little more than two years after her father, Jim, died, Olidis and her now-husband Benett wed on Aug. 26, 2017, at a picturesque Canadian hotel resort. As they walked down the aisle as husband and wife, about 100 friends and family members showered them with the flower petals.

“That was definitely a really, really special moment. I kind of felt his presence even more because that was part of him, his favorite flowers. They also had been saved from his service so a lot of emotions were running through that day.  Olidis, of Toronto, tells PEOPLE.

“It’s one thing walking back down the aisle as newly pronounced husband and wife and you’re excited in that aspect too. The flowers kind of added a touch.”

Photos from the ceremony showed Olidis and Benett sporting wide smiles as they walked down the aisle hand-in-hand. The bride says she also honored her father in other ways at the wedding.

“We had little memory charms with his photo on each of our bouquets, mine including my bridesmaids and my mom had one,” she says. “My husband had one …  we all had a little memory charm on our bouquets or corsages. There were photos put up throughout. We had saved him a seat as well.”

The sign on Jim’s empty seat read: “I’m in heaven for your wedding, so what shall I do? I’ll come down to earth to spend it with you. So save me a seat just one empty chair. You may not see me but I will be there.”

Olidis and Benett have been together for nine years, with Benett proposing to her just months after her father died. She says Benett and her father had a great relationship, and Jim loved them as a couple.

As for Olidis, she says she misses her father’s “big, contagious smile” most of all.

“He was a great dad. We had a pretty close family growing up and everyone was a part of it, in terms of friends as well. He had a big impact on not only our life, but my friends’ as well,” she tells PEOPLE.

“There have been a lot of life events that have happened since he’s been gone. him being here.”

Jodi Arias Might Request Prison Leave to Attend Father’s Funeral: Relative

The father of Jodi Arias has died in California, and the 37-year-old convicted murderer is distraught — and considering requesting a supervised leave from prison to attend a funeral, PEOPLE has confirmed.

William A. Arias died of undisclosed causes on the evening of September 19. He was 68.

According to a relative, Jodi Arias, who is in prison for the murder of ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander, is distraught and looking into the possibility of applying for a supervised visit so she can attend a memorial service.

“She’s really upset,” the relative tells PEOPLE. “It’s hard for her to know that he’s really gone. She wants to see her family and pay her respects.”

Under Arizona law, inmates can apply for an escorted leave visit to attend the funeral or memorial service of a loved one. If the request is granted, the inmate will be supervised by authorities the entire time.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

However, Arias would very likely be unable to attend her father’s memorial service if it’s held in California. Inmates who are granted an escorted leave visit must remain within Arizonas. Funeral visits are not available for closed casket services, or memorials where the body has already been cremated.

“She wants to go, but it seems impossible now,” says the relative. “The logistics just don’t work out. And yes, it’s sad for her, but it can’t be the family’s problem. They’re grieving the loss of a beloved man.”

Andrew Wilder, the Director of Communications and Media Relations for the Arizona Department of Corrections, tells PEOPLE that Arias “has not requested to attend a funeral.” The approval process can take several days.

Arias was convicted of first degree murder in the 2008 stabbing and shooting death of Alexander. She was sentenced in 2015 to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

25 Father’s Day Books That Cover All of Dad’s Interests

This article originally appeared on Real Simple.

What do you get for the father who has everything? He already has every power tool on the market, season tickets to see his favorite teams, and enough cool techy toys to last him a lifetime. Although he might not fancy himself a big reader, there’s nothing more thoughtful, or personal, than a book picked just for him.

The great thing about giving books as gifts is that even the father who thinks he’s learned it all can still explore a new world, learn more about his favorite hobby, or be entertained by a fun cast of characters.

If your dad loves to eat but can’t cook to save his life, gift him Dude Food, a men’s cookbook full of simple, yet delicious recipes with the extremely amateur chef in mind. If he’s mastered food and is ready to move on to more complex recipes, challenge him to brew his own beer with a step-by-step guide to home brewing.

If you’re looking to show your dad how much you love and appreciate him, how about a book of letter prompts, so you can write him letters about all the wonderful memories you’ve shared together? Any time he misses you, he can flip back and read your letters and feel closer to you, no matter how far you are.

For the dad who loves to watch sports, gift him a book about the lesser-known players in baseball. Although he might be able to rattle off every famous shortstop in history, he’ll be fascinated to learn about great supporting players and how they made it to the Major Leagues.

Flip through Real Simple’s list of the best books to give to your dad to find something special for him this Father’s Day. No matter his interest, from sports history to science projects, these picks will be sure to entertain him for hours.

1. 1,000 Record Covers, by Michael Ochs

For the dad who still has a collection of records somewhere in the house, this anthology of album art will capture his interest for hours. Famous music archivist and rock photographer Michael Ochs has selected the best covers from his extensive private collection, and his book takes readers through the evolution of rock music from the 60s to the 90s.

To buy: $ 18, amazon.com.

2. See America: A Celebration of Our National Parks & Treasured Sites, by the Creative Action Network

Given the National Park Service celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, this book is both thoughtful and timely. If Dad is an avid traveler or just has a serious case of wanderlust, he’ll love thumbing through the various graphic posters illustrating a beautiful park or national monument.

To buy: $ 12, amazon.com.

3. Letters to My Dad

A collection of envelopes, each with a different prompt for the letter inside. Prompts include: “the best adventure we’ve had together,” “my favorite memory,” and “one thing I love about our family.” What results is a time capsule of memories and letters that Dad can read and re-read for years to come.

To buy: $ 12, amazon.com.

4. The Smartest Book in the World, by Greg Proops

This combines two of Dad’s favorites—comedy and the quest to know it all. The culture compendium covers tons of historical and current references, meaning he’ll be equipped with plenty of trivia to share at future family gatherings.

To buy: $ 4, amazon.com.

5. The League of Outsider Baseball, by Gary Cieradkowski

This book of baseball history is perfect for the father who grew up playing (or just loving) the sport. It includes stories of baseball’s lesser-known players, as well as a look at great athletes before they hit the Major Leagues. Pages include portraits and vintage-style baseball cards, making this one book he’ll want to read and display on the shelf.

To buy: $ 7, amazon.com.

6. Miracle at Augusta, by James Patterson and Peter de Jonge

If he’s a Patterson fan, the author’s newest novel is a necessary addition to his bookshelf. It centers on Travis McKinley, an amateur golfer who unexpectedly wins the PGA Senior Open. He pairs up with a troubled teenager to conquer the world’s most respected golf course.

To buy: $ 14, amazon.com.

7. Mastering Homebrew, by Randy Mosher

If Dad loves beer, this handbook covers everything he needs to know about brewing his own—from buying the perfect equipment to crafting a flavor that’s all his own.

To buy: $ 19, amazon.com.

8. Dead Wake, by Erik Larson

This New York Times bestseller examines and retells the story of the Lusitania, a luxury ocean liner considered to be the fastest cruise ship in the world during WWI. The ship sank in May 1915, carrying with it a record number of infants and children. Larson’s carefully researched story attempts to answer many of the questions surrounding the disaster.

To buy: $ 17, amazon.com.

9. Dad’s Book of Awesome Science Experiments, by Mike Adamick

This book has 30 interactive experiments for Dad to try in the house (or outside if they get too messy). It covers all of the sciences, from chemistry to human anatomy. You can even make “Marshmallow Pulse Keepers.” Curious yet?

To buy: $ 15, amazon.com.

10. The Ghost Army of World War II, by Rick Beyer and Elizabeth Sayles

To buy: $ 12, amazon.com.

12. Tom Brokaw: A Lucky Life Interrupted, by Tom Brokaw

Brokaw’s memoir is based on a journal he kept during the scary, emotional year that he was diagnosed with cancer. In addition to remembering his career highlights, he treats his illness like a reported story—and aims to help people understand his illness and handle similar battles in their own lives.

To buy: $ 9, amazon.com.

13. Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future,by Ashlee Vance

For a technology junkie dad, give him the authorized biography of one of Silicon Valley’s most exciting entrepreneurs—the brain behind Tesla, PayPal, and SpaceX, among others.
To buy: $ 14, amazon.com.

14. Who Built That, by Michelle Malkin

If Dad loves to know where things came from, or how they were built, he’ll appreciate this history of the American pioneers and inventors who created some of the most essential items we take for granted—like railroad signs, plastics, and even bottle caps.

To buy: $ 11, amazon.com.

15. Menswear Dog Presents the New Classics: Fresh Looks for the Modern Man, by David Fung and Yena Kim

Fashion-forward dogs model the classic menswear items and must-haves for every man’s closet, mixing essential style advice with seriously cute photos that will make any Dad smile.

19. Being a Dad Is Weird: Lessons in Fatherhood From My Family to Yours, by Ben Falcone

Your dad may know Ben Falcone for his appearances in the movies Enough Said and Bridesmaids, or his work as the director of The Boss and Tammy, but his most challenging role to date has been the one of a father. Your dad will relate to his struggles as he tells of the hilarious adventures he and his wife, Melissa McCarthy, have had raising their two young daughters.

To buy: $ 15, amazon.com.

20. Notes on a Banana: A Memoir of Food, Love, and Manic Depression, by David Leite

Foodie fathers will love this memoir from the James Beard Award-winning creator of the website Leite’s Culinaria. In his youth, Leite struggled with manic depression, which went undiagnosed until his mid-thirties. Until then, he found relief through food, watching Julia Child, and cooking for others. Twitter Had A Field Day With The Ivanka Trump Brand Father’s Day Gift Guide

Father’s Day is fast approaching, and lifestyle brands are sharing their top gift recommendations ― that includes Ivanka Trump’s brand.

On Tuesday, Ivanka Trump HQ tweeted out its Father’s Day gift guide.

The tweet features a photo of gift options, like grilling tools and coasters. “Whether a football lover or a coffee aficionado, these picks will please every dad,” Ivanka Trump HQ wrote.

Trump has made moves to distance herself from her clothing and lifestyle brand and currently serves as an “assistant to the president,” but “Team Ivanka” remains in operation.

When Twitter users saw the Father’s Day gift guide, they were quick to direct their responses to the brand’s founder and namesake.

Others referenced reports about the Trump campaign’s suspected collusion with Russian officials who interfered in the 2016 election.

The gift guide itself includes a $ 250 coffee maker, $ 325 briefcase and a $ 117 set of grooming products.

Some dads also chimed in to share their thoughts on the gift offerings.

This Twitter kerfuffle comes less than two weeks after the account was criticized for a Memorial Day tweet about “champagne popsicles.”

Many people referred to the tweet as “tone deaf.”

Father’s Day Spending Expected to Hit $15.5 Billion

It’s expected to be a record for spending on Dad this year.
According to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey conducted by Prosper Insight & Analytics, spending is expected to hit $ 15.5 billion this year, the highest figure in the 15-year history of the survey. Last year, spending was $ 14.2 billion.
According to the survey, shoppers are expected to spend an average of $ 134.75 this year, up from last year’s $ 125.92.
“It’s encouraging to see that consumers are spending on special occasions such as Father’s Day,” said Matthew Shay, president and chief executive officer of NRF. “This is a positive sign of strong consumer confidence heading into the second half of the year, and a good deal for all the dads who will reap the benefits.”
The survey found 27 percent of dads would love to receive a “gift of experience” for Father’s Day — and 25 percent of shoppers will fulfill that wish by buying their fathers tickets to a concert or a sporting event.
Gift cards are expected to account for $ 2.2 billion in spending, given by 43 percent, the same that will be spent on apparel. Consumer electronics will account for $ 1.8 billion, personal-care products such as a bottle of cologne will total $ 888

Khloe And Kourtney Kardashian Accept Award On Late Father’s Behalf

Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian picked up an honor for their late father in New York on Monday but sister Kim pulled out of the event to tend to her rapper husband Kanye West.

The reality TV sisters and their mother, Kris Jenner, were attending the Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research yearly fundraiser.

“It’s such a lovely event that Kim usually comes to. Khloe and I have never been. So we’re really excited and cancer is something that’s really near and dear to our hearts,” Kourtney Kardashian told reporters on the red carpet.

Attorney Robert Kardashian Sr. died in 2003 just two months after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He was honored on Monday with an award recognizing his philanthropic contributions during his lifetime.

Jenner presented a check to the foundation for $ 250,000 from all of her children.

“We’ve been coming to the event for a few years and it’s been one of the most rewarding things that we do on an annual basis,” Jenner said.

The foundation was set up by songwriter Denise Rich and is named after her daughter, who died 20 years ago.

Kim Kardashian had been expected to make her first public appearance since being robbed at gunpoint in Paris in early October. But she pulled out after West was hospitalized in Los Angeles for exhaustion.

The night’s other honorees included Dr. Carl H. June, the director of the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies and director of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at the University of Pennsylvania, and Australian billionaire Heloise Pratt, chair of the Pratt Foundation.

Louis C.K. Gets The Best Father’s Day Message From His TV Daughter

If any grumpy, balding, middle-aged dad is going to earn admiration from his kid, it’s going to be Louis C.K.

Hadley Delany, who plays one of the comedian’s daughters on “Louie,” had a Father’s Day message for her show-biz pop. It beats Hallmark treacle any day.

“You taught me the most important rule of all: never, ever get fat,” she says in a Made Man video posted last week.

Later in the clip, she asks, “What other dad would catch their daughter smoking pot and then take her out for burgers? That’s like an irresponsible level of cool.”

Hey, nobody said the guy was Ward Cleaver.

Check out the full video above. And a belated happy Father’s Day to all of you other stand-up dads, even if you don’t do standup.

On Father’s Day: War, Memories and Moving On

The essay below is adapted from my first book, “Perfume Dreams: Reflections on the Vietnamese Diaspora.” On Father’s Day, as a child of a veteran, I am posting this in commemoration of all those who fought and live still haunted with memories of wars.

Home for the weekend recently, I chanced upon my father’s South Vietnamese Army uniform, the three silver stars still pinned meticulously onto each lapel. Once in that tropical country, my father had worn it regally, a warrior in a civil war he bravely fought and lost. Once, as a child, I had looked up to a man who had seemed more like a deity. Hadn’t I imagined myself as an adult walking in his soldierly footsteps?

A particular night emerges from my childhood memories: the cool wind blows through a villa where distant B-52 bomb explosions echo, melding with the monsoon rain. I am 10 years old, an army brat living with my family in the imperial city of Hue, near the DMZ (demilitarized zone). Somewhere in the servant quarters our two German shepherds are barking loudly as a few army jeeps screech to a halt on the cobble stone courtyard.

2014-04-14-ScreenShot20140414at9.16.49AM.png

My father’s hat and cane, relics from the Vietnam war.

“Papa’s home! Papa’s Home”! I yell and rush to him — he laughs as he lifts me up for a warm embrace. His wet uniform emits the smell of sweat, cologne, mud, cigar and gunpowder — smells that I will always associate with the battlefield. But it does not matter — I am happy in that embrace, happy in that house by the Perfume River when history was still on our side.

A few years later, however, the war ended — badly for us. When we set foot on the American shore, history was already against us; Vietnam went on without us; America went on without acknowledging us. In America, there were no territories for father and son to defend, no war to fight. Instead, a gap slowly widened between us.

Though he managed to remake himself as a banking executive with an MBA — a remarkable feat for someone who came to America in his 40s and who spoke English as his third language — my father’s passion remains extraterritorial. At dinner time, after a drink or two, he would relive the battles that he had fought and won. The Vietnam war has become for him “a twenty-five years century” — the epitome of his life.

My father’s booming voice shook every pane of glass in our new home and filled me, slowly but surely, with an impending sense of doom. His war, my inheritance; his defeat, my legacy. By the time I was 12, I, too, had become a bitter veteran of a war — but one I had never actually fought.

What my father rarely mentioned was the last time he wore his uniform — the day South Vietnam surrendered. My father had commandeered a navy ship full of army officers to the Philippines. Nearing shore, he changed into a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, threw his gun into the Pacific Ocean, and asked the U.S. for asylum. I was not there but that image, more than any other, spelled the end of my childhood mythology.

When I turned 18, my father — a big fan of Napoleon — took the family to Europe for vacation. Paris, where he had once been a foreign student, was the main attraction but he insisted on seeing the battlefield of Waterloo in Belgium. We spent hours driving through the Belgian countryside until, at last, we found the place. Climbing to the top of the hill overlooking the field, my father began narrating where Napoleon’s army stood, and how the Duke of Wellington arrived just on time to turn the tide. I already knew the story and I was no longer intrigued. I suddenly realized that passions are not inherited — that what the pasture I was gazing at invoked in me was not a martial ethos but poetry.

2015-06-21-1434908284-369257-GenThiLam_1474x245.jpg

My father visiting West Point as a general during the Vietnam War.

Somewhere in between the boy who once sang the Vietnamese national anthem in the school yard in Saigon with tears in his eyes and the young man preparing to go to college believing in his own power to shape his destiny was the slow but natural demise of the old patriotic impulse. The boy was willing to die for his homeland. The man had become circumspect. The boy had believed that the borders, like the Great Wall of China, were real demarcations, their integrity not to be disputed. The man discovered that the borders have always been porous. The boy was once overwhelmed by the tragedy that had fallen on his people, had resented history for robbing him and his family of home and hearth and national identity. The man, though envious of the primacy of his childhood emotions, has become emboldened by his own process of individualization.

Indeed, the Cold War and its aftermath has given birth to a race of children like me — transnationals. The greatest phenomenon in this century, I am now convinced, has less to do with the World Wars than with the dispossessed those wars sent fleeing. Today displacement — movement — has become the contemporary narrative.

Today in America, in retirement, my father watches CNN and practices his martial arts. He does not expect history to be kind and is, therefore, not an unhappy man. He watches the collapse of communism around the world with glee and sips his wines.” Perhaps one day soon, when communism fails there too and democracy reigns, my father will return to Vietnam, if only to dance one last dance on his enemies’ graves.

Whereas I…

Every morning I write, rendering memories into words. Only this morning, waking from a recurrent dream in which I am diving into the ocean to retrieve a rusty gun, do I begin to appreciate how tricky history is, how powerful its grip on one’s soul. Always in the dream I reach out for the gun but it dissolves into sand, into mud, and sifts through my clutching fingers.

Every morning I write, going back further, re-invoking the past precisely because it is irretrievable. I write, if only to take leave.

A kiss then for my father as the weekend visit ends. I tear a hole through the army uniform’s plastic cover, lean close and sniff. There is no odor now of gun powder, no smell of scorched earth, no cigar stench — only the faint smell of mothballs, old dust.

Comedian Jim Breuer’s Father’s Day Message of Hope and Healing

“If we don’t find the funny, there’s not too many other ways of healing.”

— Jim Breuer

Jim Breuer knows funny. The comedian who was named by Comedy Central as one of the greatest standup comedians of all time has been entertaining us since his days on “Saturday Night Live” to his recent Epix special, “Jim Breuer: Comedy Frenzy.” But it was his movie “More Than Me,” a documentary of Breuer’s experience taking his elderly and sick father on his comedy tour, which was perhaps one of the pinnacles of his career.

At the end of the movie, Breuer tearfully contemplates losing his father. Breuer’s father died of cancer in August 2014, making this Breuer’s first Father’s Day without his father. And Breuer is sharing a simple but powerful message that he learned from, and with, his dad:

You don’t have to hide from life’s uncomfortable truths — sickness, death, fear — you can look them in the eye, laugh and move on.

Breuer described how his relationship with his dad changed over time. “Well, with my dad, he was a solid-rock man. For me, fearless. I’m going to assume that came from his World War II days. And really quiet. We never had big talks. They were always short conversations,” he explained. “But every pivotal move in my life, he gave the perfect man, fatherly advice. Leaving school, chasing my career, to getting married — everything. One little line here, one little line there. He was so big and powerful.”

But as time went on, Breuer’s dad became older and struggled with his health. The comedian was taken aback as his father appeared to be aware of his own waning health. “So when he started getting old, I remember being in this kitchen, and he looked a little off, and I’m like, ‘What’s the matter, Dad?’ And he goes, ‘I think I’m coming into my last days,'” he recalled. “So, why would you say that? ‘Do you feel like you’re having a heart attack or something?’ [He said] ‘No. I’m just coming into the end of my days.'”

This was a powerful lesson for Breuer. His dad was calmly and assertively facing sickness and death. And this may be the healthiest choice. Studies suggest that far from improving well-being, suppressing or avoiding one’s experience can actually worsen mental and physical health.

And it meant that Breuer himself had to face that reality. “It was so profound. He just knew. ‘I want you to know, I’m out of here soon,'” he said. “When I heard my dad say that, he was the one thing where I was like, ‘Oh, he’s going to live forever.’ Then I went, ‘Oh, my G-d, he’s leaving.’ And I didn’t know when or what.”

It was then Breuer started to see a different side of his father. Breuer describes: “[F]or the first time, I saw him vulnerable. Never saw him vulnerable,” he explained. “And I’d get him in the shower and get over that whole ‘I’ve got to get over looking at my father naked, and clean his rear end and scrub him.’ I know he’s embarrassed. He’s not going to say he’s embarrassed. But I can tell by his face he’s embarrassed. He’d be completely humiliated.”

So Breuer took the lesson from his dad and explored how to make the best of a terrible situation. The comic started by remembering how what his dad had done for him. “And then as he started deteriorating, I just remembered all the little things he’d do for me to keep me going. And they were so little. But they were huge,” he recalled. “And so when he started going down, it’s those moments when you look at what’s really important. I’m going to start lifting him up.”

And so Breuer turned to what he knew best — humor. This was a wise choice; not only because of his chosen profession, but also because of the evidence that humor can improve many aspects of functioning from mood, to immune functioning to learning.

“[W]e’re going to laugh about it. I’m going to drive him nuts. I’m going to do what I do best. I’m going to drive you nuts. … I would laugh so hard, busting his chops,” Breuer said. “And he loved George Carlin. That would be the only thing that would make him belly-laugh. It’s just something you take on. And I did everything in my power, and I think I succeeded to make that the best I could. We laughed. We’d make it a project. We’d laugh about it. It sucked at first. But then I’d overcome it.”

And it was a two-way street. “As much as I’d bust his chops, he’d bust mine in different ways. He knew I’d get mortified when I’d say certain things in public. He got off on that,” Breuer recounted. .”The laughing was always the healer.”

For Breuer, the laughing was not an attempt to avoid the truth, but rather what made it easier to embrace truth. “Sometimes, people don’t want to acknowledge the raw truth. Sometimes the truth is dark and ugly and hurts,” he explained. “And that goes with death and everything else. And sometimes it’s not pretty. Some of it’s just plain evil.”

And there’s one raw truth that Breuer found he was able to accept over time.

“Men like that don’t say ‘I love you so much.’ They say, ‘I did the oil in your car.’ That means, ‘G-d damn. I love you.'”

‘There’s $ 20 on your bed means ‘G-d damn. I love you.’ That’s their way.”

“And that’s up to you to figure out what that means.”

Big Slick: Celebs gather in Kansas City to focus on family, charity this Father’s Day weekend

Back in 2010 I called two friends from my hometown of Overland Park, Kansas with an idea for a charity poker tournament. The friends were Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis, and the goal was to have fun with our family and friends while raising $ 50K or so for Children’s Mercy Hospital. It took nine weeks to plan. I named the event Big Slick, and celebrated as year one exceeded expectations both in regard to total money raised and the generosity of all those involved – including friends like Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, George Wendt and Will Forte who flew in for the cause.

This weekend marks the 6th annual Big Slick Celebrity Weekend fundraiser. It’s also Father’s Day. And while the holiday overlap wasn’t intentional, it beautifully highlights everything Big Slick has grown to be about over the past five years. The event has increased in size, awareness, donations and celebrity attendance, but it still remains all about family: those families impacted by childhood illness and seeking care from the incredible doctors and team at Children’s Mercy; as well as my own family – and those of fellow co-hosts Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, David Koechner and Eric Stonestreet – who volunteer countless hours to make Big Slick and the more than $ 2.2MM it’s raised (a record $ 1MM in 2014) possible.

Throughout the months leading up to Big Slick, it really is a familial effort that makes it all happen. My sister Julie and brother-in-law Mark are on the organization board along with Paul’s mother and sister, Jason’s mom, David’s sister, Eric’s sister… not to mention volunteer committees full of countless childhood and college friends. It’s an annual family reunion of sorts that keeps us connected to our roots, introduces new friends to a city that we love, rallies the entire region around charity and continually humbles and inspires us – all while having fun.

The fun of Big Slick weekend includes a variety of fundraising events ranging from celebrity vs. celebrity softball on the field at Royals’ Kaufman Stadium to song and dance numbers and high-ticket auction items. However, the best part of the weekend is always away from the crowds. It’s the hours spent in the halls at Children’s Mercy. Those moments in the hospital are also what brings us, all the volunteers and our celebrity friends – most of whom have no personal connection to Kansas City or the Midwest – back to support Big Slick year after year. Once you meet the children and their parents, hear their stories, meet the nurses and staff… there’s no denying that it’s worth taking the weekend to help these individuals – even if it means being away from your own kids on Father’s Day in order to support these fathers.

There’s an incredible documentary called Inside Pediatrics that was filmed at Children’s Mercy last year, narrated by Paul Rudd and including a glimpse of Big Slick weekend. Whether you’re familiar with the Kansas City area or not, it’s a moving look at the current work being done in child medicine and the challenges faced by our neighbors impacted by illness. It’s what inspires me. This Father’s Day or any day – whether in your hometown or current town – I encourage you to find what inspires you to act. Making a difference could start with something as simple as an idea and phone call. To learn more about Big Slick, visit BigSlickKC.org or Crowdrise.com/BigSlick.

Oliver Peoples Box Set by Byredo

2015-06-05-1433528478-8607714-3Byredo.jpg

Cooler (potentially younger) dads will already know about niche fragrance house Byredo and optical enthusiasts Oliver Peoples. The two brands have collaborated in a “synesthetic” project that demonstrates the influence of color on smell.

The new Oliver Peoples box set includes a pair of limited edition specs along with a bottle of Byredo’s new eau de parfum (also named Oliver Peoples — natch). The specs are available in three different photochromic lens colors including Indigo, Champagne and Green; the bottle will match the lens color you chose. The idea here is that the color you pick out will invariably have an effect on what you smell most in the multi-faceted fragrance. Weird but true. You may pick out anything from the juniper berries and Californian Lemon in the top of the fragrance to the musks, warm sand and patchouli that are deeper in the mix. And if the sensory illusion is completely lost on you, you can always buy the fragrance separately — it smells just as good without tinted specs.

He captures the rainbows, cheap thrills, and irritating potholes of parenting with splendid understatement.”– Library Journal (Starred Review) After three decades of being a father, Clyde Edgerton-with four kids ranging in age from six to 30-is supremely qualified to give tips to dads of all ages. His fathering advice, pre-birth through schooling, involves plenty of his trademark humor, but also sound guidance enhanced by his training and experience as an educator. Papa Edgerton suggests that on occasion a father might forego reading and just point to the pictures of dogs and cats in baby books, and also that he might place a blanket on the lawn, lie on his back with the whole family, and watch Sky Television. Edgerton’s humorous and helpful counsel will guide new parents on interacting with in-laws and coping with sleep deprivation, while also providing strategies for recovery after you’ve cursed in front of a mimicking baby. “If you don’t feel apprehensive just before your first child is to arrive, you are abnormal,” writes Edgerton. Yet by way of his experience, observation, and imagination, he provides caution and pure joy in equal measure.

Our Fathers’ War

Our Fathers’ War

A powerful and unique portrait of generational strife and changing styles of masculinity as seen through the stories of ten World War II veterans and their baby boomer sons. It is fair to say that Tom Mathews’s relations with his father, a veteran of World War II’s fabled 10th Mountain Division, were terrible. He came back from the war to a young son he’d barely met and proceeded to bully and browbeat him-for his own good, he thought. In the course of puzzling out almost fifty years of intermittent conflict, Mathews came to understand that their problems were not simply personal, they were generational-and widely shared by millions of other baby boomer sons. And so, to write this powerful book, which traces the kinetic effect of the war on the men who fought it, their sons, and their grandsons, Mathews has uncovered nine other dramatic and telling father-son tales of veterans in some ways missing in action and how internal war wounds shaped their lives as fathers. These include a combat infantryman whose life was saved by the fabled Audie Murphy, and a black member of the storied Tuskegee Airmen corps. In a moving final chapter, he and his father return together to Italy to revisit scenes from the war-and attempt, at long last, to forge their own separate peace. In a very real sense, Our Fathers’ War tells the secret history of World War II and its echoes down the years and generations. In the course of doing so, it offers a portrait of evolving styles of American manhood that many, many fathers and sons have been needing and awaiting.
