Meghan Markle’s go-to stylist and closest adviser has a new gig at Hudson’s Bay as fashion and bridal specialist.
Already familiar face as a lifestyle commentator on “Cityline,” Jessica Mulroney is a stylist, p.r., brand and content strategist to major Canadian brands and labels. Having teamed with the retailer in 2014 to launch the Kleinfeld brand in Canada, her role has her helping “drive the fashion and bridal business” and acting as the spokeswoman for its new Core Life brand due out this fall.
Markle’s allegiance to Canadian labels like Sentaler, Line the Label, Greta Constantine and Mackage is believed to have been steered by Mulroney’s guidance. The stylist also is also chummy with Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, the wife of Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Born Jessica Brownstein, her family tree stems back to Browns Shoes founder Benjamin Brownstein. Mulroney’s husband Ben is a Canadian TV host and is the eldest son of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. The couple’s daughter Ivy has been tapped as a flower girl for the royal wedding and their twin sons Brian and John will be page boys in the wedding party. Jamie Anderson Shares Favorite Olympic Moments at ‘Bridezillas’ Pop-up

TRUE BLUE MEMORIES: Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Jamie Anderson made a drive-by at one of Times Square’s lesser-known destinations Thursday morning — WE TV’s pop-up “Bridezillas” Museum of Natural Hysteria.
As the first American woman to win two gold medals in snowboarding — first in Sochi and last month in Pyeongchang, Anderson has reason to hit the “Scream Booth,” but her placidness didn’t really translate. “I went in there but I had no energy to scream. I don’t like screaming. I did a little silent one. I was only an ‘Agitated Angel’ but I tried my hardest.”
Still running after appearances on “Ellen,” “Conan,” “The Chew” and a Wednesday night red-eye flight, Anderson will be checking in with The Players’ Tribune before hitting the Ralph Lauren store in SoHo tonight with a few of her fellow Team USA athletes. Wearing a Ralph Lauren white button down shirt, distressed black jeans and no-brand scubalike sneakers she bought in a thrift store in South Korea, Anderson started a conversation about her Olympic experience with “I am so grateful,”dragging out the adjective for effect. “Look” she said pulling her 2018 gold medal from a back pocket and handing it over. Kim Kardashian Returns to the House Where All Your Favorite Keeping Up Moments Went Down: ‘This Is So Nostalgic’

Kim Kardashian toured some serious Beverly Hills real estate on Wednesday, but she’s not house shopping.

“Can anyone guess where I’m at? You guys, this is so nostalgic,” the reality star says in a video posted to Snapchat, showing the Mediterranean-style facade of a very familiar home.

Longtime Keeping Up With the Kardashians viewers should recognize the comparatively modest Beverly Hills mansion. “My old house! Do you remember this?” Kardashian, 36, says, giving her followers a full tour of the property, which she found with the help of Million Dollar Listings’ Josh Altman.

RELATED: Angelina Jolie Struggled to Furnish Her New $ 25 Million Solo Home: Decorating ‘Was Always Brad’s Thing’

It seems whoever purchased the home was a KUWTK fan, too. Kardashian points out that all of her furnishings, which were included in the sale, are still perfectly undisturbed, down to her personal logo on the mirrors in her glam room. “They kept all my old furniture, every last piece of mine. Everything is exactly the same,” she says.

Kardashian also takes fans down memory lane with a tour making stops at each location in the house where a memorable TV moment went down.

“Do you remember the episode where Rob was sitting right here eating all the food?” she points out a spot at her kitchen island, which is of course right next to the double fridge where she and mom Kris Jenner got in a cupcake food fight at her welcoming party.

Heading upstairs she pauses at the site of a significant purging. “Do you guys remember cleaning out all of my shoes and they all ended up here?” she notes, pausing for a glam shot in the “same mirror.”

Things get a little weird in the master bedroom, where Kardashian notes, “This is my same exact bedding, you guys, and my home phones.” Unfazed, the beauty maven moves on to the master bath where she says she once dropped sister Kourtney’s son Mason — “it was no big deal, I caught him,” she notes — and, according to sister and co-tour guide Khloe, 33, she “had a bad reaction to botox.”

Before heading out she adds, “That shower . . . Don’t even want to tell you what’s gone on.”

“ glam room was everything to me,” she says. “This is where I would glam every single day. . . This is legendary.”

Back out front, she recalls two less pleasant memories. “You guys, this is where they TP-ed my house. Do you remember?” Cutting to her grassy driveway she adds, “This floor and heels never went together,” before saying “Bye to my gorgeous old house, where . . . a lot of my Keeping Up memories with my sisters were made.”

Pulling away with Khloe she pulls out one last fun fact: “This house next door was the house I grew up in with my mom and Bruce. Fun Keeping Up fact.”

Kardashian and husband Kanye West, 40, lived with Kris Jenner in Calabasas after their daughter North, 4, was born and moved into a Bel Air home they’d been renovating for three years after the birth of their son, Saint, 1. The first purchased the $ 11 million home in 2013.

You Can Now Download And Use The Fonts Of Your Favorite ’90s TV Shows

If you’ve longed to write “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” fan fiction in the exact font the iconic ‘90s horror anthology used for its logo ― well, dedicated SNICK follower, your time has come.

Thanks to this website, you can write all the teenage campfire drama you want, in the Benguiat Bold typeface you’ve come to love. In fact, you can even read a bit about the font’s origins, and other typefaces destined for ‘90s TV show stardom, thanks to typography expert Alexander Tochilovsky, the design curator of the Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography in New York City.

“The ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ logo is an interesting one,” he explains on the site. “While it’s seemingly very simple with the oval and a clip art like hand, the decision to use this particular typeface is slightly more sophisticated. Conceptually, though, it fits the show perfectly and has the right feel for the intended audience ― especially with the ‘glow in the dark’ vibe it carries.”

Not interested in Tochilovsky’s breakdown of “AYAOTD?” font? (For shame.) How about his take on the “Frasier” typeface? Or “Rugrats”? Or “Fresh Prince”? Or “Twin Peaks”?

The list goes on. Tochilovsky’s got a whole host of downloadable fonts on the site, courtesy of interactive content creation platform Ceros, along with blurbs that let you know that Gabriel Weiss’ “Friends” font is hand-drawn, and that the “Law and Order” typeface is called Friz Quadrata Std Roman, while the “90210” font is Newhouse DT SuperCondensed Bold.

Typography devotees, go ahead and enjoy a little bit of nostalgia with your dose of design.

Leonard Cohen’s Favorite Greek Singer: Athena Andreadis

Many years ago while visiting Greece, Leonard Cohen was asked who his favorite Greek singer was. “Athena,” he replied without hesitation. While making his final CD, “You Want It Darker,” Cohen found out that Athena had moved to Los Angeles and immediately asked her to sing the chorus of his song “Traveling Light.”

Before moving to Los Angeles, Athena had been on a dynamic trajectory in Europe releasing three albums and performing at the Glastonbury Festival, Royal Festival Hall and throughout France and Greece. The Guardian called her “brave and original” and The Daily Mail wrote that Athena was “Radiating class and oodles of talent… a voice blessed… this rare diamond ought to shine.” Here in the U.S., Billboard hailed her as “a talented rising pop star” with “a voice blessed.”

2017-02-03-1486163444-9414207-ATHENA4CCoverLG.jpg

Produced by Ethan Allen, Athena’s debut U.S. CD “Ready for the Sun” features studio greats Adam Levy (Norah Jones), Deron Johnson (Miles Davis), Jimmy Paxson (Stevie Nicks), Michael Ward (Ben Harper) and Jonathan Flaugher (Ryan Adams).

2017-02-03-1486163371-7009473-athena620.jpg

I was fortunate to see Athena perform many of the songs from the CD at Hotel Cafe last Tuesday. Personally I loved “Autopilot,” “Everything To Me” and the soulful, contemplative ballads “Where Wildflowers Grow” and “All of You.” In the tradition of Adele, Whitney Houston, and Aimee Mann, Athena’s voice is both heartwarming and majestic.

I asked Athena about the CD and she said that it was “about being ready for the light even in the darkest of places where our hearts have broken and it’s cold, where we have shrunk and dried up and it feels so very small and scary to be exposed, yet knowing, as so many poets – from Rumi to Mary Oliver to Leonard Cohen – have pointed to, that it’s those very cracks, those wounds, where the light enters, the joy too I feel seeing that people are gathering the courage to live in harmony with one another and with our own self within and that ‘peace’ to become the natural, the unquestionable, the mainstream.”

Who Kicked Off Coachella in Festival-Themed Underwear? See How All Your Favorite Stars Are Celebrating Weekend 1

Everyone celebrates the annual arrival of music festival season in their own unique way. While many of us are busy getting our finest fringed garments out of storage, dusting off our vast collection of fanny packs, and dyeing our hair some technicolor hue in anticipation, one celebrity festival attendee has taken Coachella-mania in an entirely new direction.

Poppy Delevingne clearly has an unparalleled passion for music, the desert, and the hippie-themed attire that naturally goes with both. So much so, she went ahead and had the name of her favorite festival embroidered across her underwear. The socialite posted a rather intimate shot to her Instagram account on Thursday night, showing off her new pair of briefs courtesy of Cheekfrills, simply captioned, “Ready.”

But perhaps this isn’t so much a testament to her love for the annual music-centric, star-studded weekend, but rather a logical extension of her days of the week underwear collection. After all, how else is she supposed to know which pairs to pack on her weekend excursion?

And Poppy’s not the only one celebrating this yearly sojourn into the desert. Tons of celebs are posting festival-themed pics in anticipation of their annual excuse to let loose and party for three days in a bikini top and short shorts under the guise of listening to music. But while the feeling of the festival may be footloose and fancy-free, we all know the actual effort that goes into those boho looks is anything but.

J.K. Rowling Shoots Down Your Favorite ‘Harry Potter’ Fan Theories

Sorry, Muggles. J.K. Rowling is going all Avada Kedavra on some of your favorite “Harry Potter” fan theories.

Up to this point, fans of the books and movies have analyzed the story so much that they’ve come up with a number of theories that are so crazy they have to be true.

As it turns out, nope, they’re just crazy. Here are the theories that must not be named anymore:

Ron Weasley is not a time-traveling Albus Dumbledore.

No! Not this one!

In the books, there are a number of physical descriptions and plot points that show major similarities between Dumbledore and Ron, but after a fan asked about it, Rowling confirmed they aren’t the same person:

Bloody hell …

Also, Draco Malfoy is not a werewolf and Snape is not a vampire.

What? OK, she’s just pouring it on now.

Because of their physical descriptions and some peculiar activities in the books, Draco Malfoy and Snape were thought to secretly be a werewolf and a vampire, respectively. Draco’s physical changes that occur in the book are seen as the result of a werewolf curse by some, and Snape’s pale complexion was viewed as evidence he was in fact undead. Unfortunately, these are not the case either:

After that, Rowling was done crushing all our Muggle dreams for one day.

Don’t be too disappointed, though. Rowling has also confirmed some other fan theories, and with her new play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” coming to the stage, you can be sure more theories are on the way.

My All Time Favorite Beauty Products and Why

Over the years I have tested and tossed a countless number of products. I like to keep up with the current trends and I enjoy testing out new things to find those hidden gems. More often than not, however, end up going back to my tried and true products that I have been using for years. I call these products my classics, and as long as they are on the market they will remain in my beauty arsenal forever. These products have never let me down and have been beneficial to me in my skin care, hair care and over all makeup routine. Below are my all time favorite products and why I love them so much.

Clearasil Daily Clear Daily Face Wash: 6.5 OZ

This face wash has worked wonders for me. It is better than any of the expensive face washes I have tried on the market. It is made from a gentle formula that is fragrance free and has never irritated my skin. I use it twice a day and it always leaves my skin feeling clean and soft.

Olay 4-in-1 Daily Facial Cloths, Normal Skin, 66 Count

These face clothes come in so handy when I’m traveling. They are convenient and work great. I never have to worry about spills in my luggage when using these. They lather up wonderfully and I can use the cloth to get a deeper scrub into my skin. I am always left with skin that feels soft, fresh and clean.

Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, 16.9-Ounce Jar

I style my hair often and unfortunately that means my hair is exposed to a lot of heat. I leave this mask in my hair for about 10-15 minutes twice a week and it helps put the moisture back in my hair and keeps it looking healthy and shiny.

Batiste Dry Shampoo, Clean and Classic, 6.73 Ounce

I definitely don’t wash my hair everyday. On the in-between days I like to use this dry shampoo to pull out the excess oils in my hair. I have used many dry shampoos and I have found this one to be the best. It doesn’t leave a build up and my hair looks and feels clean even on the days it isn’t washed.

Clarisonic Mia 1 Skin Cleansing System, White

I love this little machine. My skin has never been smoother or brighter. The motion of the bristles gently scrub away imperfections and dead skin. It keeps my pores clean and evens out the texture of my skin. It comes with its own cleaners but I use the cleansers of my choice and still get amazing results.

Tweezerman Stainless Steel Slant Tweezer, Pink

I am a huge advocate of getting your eyebrows professionally done. We all know, however, that sometimes we just don’t get around to it and are left with growing caterpillars above our eyes. For these desperate times I use the Tweezerman Slant Tweezers. These tweezers have the ability to grab hold of the tiniest hairs that I used to struggle with using other brands. They are extremely precise, even on the finest of hairs.

The Balm Mary-lou Manizer Aka The Luminizer Shimmer, Highlighter and Eyeshadow, with Twinbeauty Brush

Highlighting and contouring has been around forever but has recently become a huge trend. Beauty bloggers across the world post instructional videos on how to get the perfect highlight and contour. This product has been a wonderful highlight for me and I believe it is good for any skin tone. It leaves a golden look to the skin providing it with a healthy glow. A little goes a long way with this product so be careful not to overdo it.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment, Dry, Cracked and Irritated Skin Protectant, 14 Ounce

I have suffered from extremely dry skin my whole life. This is a condition that seems even more apparent in the winter months. After I shower I apply this cream all over my body for some dry skin relief. I even carry some in my bag to apply on my hands throughout the day.

Crest 3D White Luxe Whitestrips Professional Effects – Teeth Whitening Kit 20 Treatments

No more $ 400 whitening sessions at the dentist for me. For the past few years I have been using Crest White Strips every 12 to 18 months. The results are always mind blowing. After using these I notice I get a ton of complements on how white my smile is. I no longer have to deal with messy trays and goopy gels. These strips adhere nicely to my teeth and I only have to leave them on for 30 minutes a day. When the treatment is over I am always so impressed with the results.

Beauty Blender Original Blender Sponge – 0.15 oz

I know I talk about this product a lot but I cannot reiterate enough how helpful the beauty blender has been for my own application as well as the application of makeup on my clients. If you want airbrushed results without spending all that money on an airbrush machine I suggest giving this product a try. You wont regret it. I love how smooth my makeup looks after using the beauty blender to apply my foundation.

Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Normal, 4.0 fl oz

I have been using this product for well over 15 years now. Even when I try to swap out for some of the fancier products I still always come back to this. It does not flake like other moisturizers can and it looks great on the skin with or without makeup. I use this lotion every time I wash my face and it has never failed me. The formula is gentle, it doesn’t clog my pores and it leaves my skin looking hydrated all day.

The Ultimate Disney Dubsmash Has All Your Favorite Characters

Mickey Mouse, Buzz Lightyear, Pluto and the Little Mermaid are just some of the beloved characters featured in this awesome Disney Dubsmash.

The compilation, which is going viral on Facebook, shows clips of a man named Dustin Hayes using the Dubsmash app so it appears as if he’s singing to the costumed characters at Walt Disney World.

He sings Foreigner’s “Cold As Ice” to Queen Elsa from “Frozen,” mimics Ariel’s vocal gymnastics in front of the Little Mermaid herself, smolders for Rapunzel and does The Village People’s “In The Navy” with Duffy, the bear known for his sailor attire… just to name a few.

But what makes the clip work so well is how the characters all gamely play along.

Check it out in the clip above.

The clip was uploaded to YouTube earlier this month, but has been going viral since it was posted on Facebook over the weekend by a North Carolina radio station.

“It’s still blowing my mind that everybody loves this video, I cannot believe that I have a viral video now,” Hayes wrote in the comments. “Thanks for all the love everybody!”

Hayes, who according to his Facebook page works at Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park, has also posted a few other Disney Dubsmash videos on YouTube,  which you can see right here. He also has an Instagram page full of Disney photos, including some unique character shots.

London Fashion Industry Favorite, Kids Company Charity, Set to Close

END OF AN ERA: Kids Company, the London charity that has long been a favorite of many a British fashion label, is set to close its doors on Wednesday after months of turmoil and the resignation of its chief executive Camila Batmanghelidjh, who founded the charity in 1996. The charity, whose aim was to help vulnerable, inner-city children, is closing over claims of financial mismanagement.
Labels including Fendi, Stella McCartney, Mulberry, Folli Follie and Matthew Williamson have all hosted events or collaborated with Kids Company in the past. Last year, Fendi organized an auction of its Peekaboo bags, designed by celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Jerry Hall and Cara Delevingne, in aid of Kids Company. The event marked the opening of Fendi’s New Bond Street store.
In 2013, Paltrow and Williamson hosted a dinner in London to raise awareness for the charity, while in 2010 Stella McCartney hosted a Fashion’s Night Out event for the organization, showcasing creations by children that Kids Company supported. Folli Follie and Mulberry have both produced designs in collaboration with the organization.
Batmanghelidjh founded Kids Company in 1996, with the aim of supporting children, young people and families in need. Batmanghelidjh, who cuts a striking figure, with her

See All The Epic Orgies From Your Favorite TV Shows (NSFW)

On Sunday night, “True Detective” had one of the most upscale, creepiest orgies shown on the small screen when Rachel McAdams’ Ani went undercover. But that may make you wonder, have there been other orgies depicted on TV shows? Why yes, of course!

To refresh your memory, The Huffington Post found all the orgy scenes we could (our jobs are tough) and made one big orgy of an orgy video. There’s goofy orgies, like that “Eyes Wide Shut” spoof from “It’s Always Sunny,” there’s Jerry Seinfeld rambling about how he’s not ready to be “an orgy guy,” and then of course there’s the best, and most diverse, sex-capade in the history of TV orgies in Netflix’s “Sense8.” Check out the very NSFW video to get your orgy fix.

4-Year-Old Cancer Patient ‘Marries’ Her Favorite Nurse

Chemotherapy treatments aren’t something most people look forward to.

But thanks to a nurse by the name of Matt Hickling, 4-year-old Abby Sayles doesn’t seem to mind them. She especially looked forward to her session last Thursday, when, thanks to the hospital staff at the Albany Medical Center, she ”married” Hickling in an impromptu wedding:

Video of the lighthearted ceremony, shared on the Albany Medical Center’s Facebook page, shows Abby entering the hospital room along with a handful of nurses who served as bridesmaids.

A local florist donated a bouquet, corsages and a boutonniere for the occasion, reports the Albany Times Union, along with a puppy-shaped basket of flowers.

While the “groom” didn’t have a suit for the occasion, he did sport the next best thing: a tuxedo t-shirt.

“Our patient shyly asked me to marry her,” Hickling recalled in a post on his Facebook page. “I didn’t hesitate to say yes, I got a HUGE hug and we sealed the deal with ring pops being placed on our fingers!”

“So today I got to help make a 4 year old leukemia patient’s ‘wedding’ to her favorite nurse happen at the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancers at [Albany Medical Center],” one of the nurses, Lori Ciafardoni, wrote on Facebook.

“Thanks to Scott Wright the team at the Enchanted Garden for donating your time and amazing flowers and to everyone at AMC that helped pull this together in less than 24 hours.”

“You people are amazing,” she added. “THIS is why we go into nursing.”

prints-pair-and-a-spare

A Pair & a Spare

A retro print is a whimsical way to make tailored shorts feel youthful. Team it up with a simple tank top and some neutral brown or tan accessories, like a fedora and cork heels.

prints-tyler-joe

Tyler Joe

For the more daring dressers, reach for a bold, graphic print. With prints of this nature, seek a dress silhouette that is elegant in shape, like this waist-defining sundress. Try it with metallic shoes and a sleek black clutch to modernize the look.

prints-dress-up-for-armageddon

Dress Up for Armageddon

Why not go for a matching set, like this culotte-and-camisole number? The length and cut of these culottes makes the printed look seem more ladylike than a shorter matching bottom. Feel free to mix prints with a contrasting accessory, like this striped bag.

katie-sturino-12ish-style-3

Whether you’re headed to the office or drinks with friends, a micro print is just the thing your tailored shirtdress needs to pack a bit more punch. Grab a leather jacket and chunky sandals and you’re good to go!

prints-corporate-catwalk-2

Corporate Catwalk

For the office, opt for a more monotone, abstract print. This midi skirt pairs perfectly with a white camisole and classic pumps. Not to mention that with a black-and-white look, it leaves room to mix in some brighter accessories.

prints-luella-june

Luella & June

Date night may call for a sexier number, but that doesn’t have to mean a micro-mini! The cutout detail and waist-defining silhouette of this printed dress is certainly after-hours-approved. Style with simple accessories to keep all the attention on that cutout!

prints-what-the-chung

What the Chung

When hitting the beach, grab a printed caftan or cover-up to allow yourself to feel a little bit more festive. This polka-dot maxi is an easy poolside pairing for your favorite summer suit. Belt it or wear it loose and add some scrappy flats to finish off the look.

prints-something-navy

Something Navy

Sure, we love a pair of blue jeans and a white tee, but sometimes we yearn for a little bit more pizzazz. Opting for a bright, printed blouse is an easy way to make an otherwise simple look more eye-catching.

prints-mk-steinmiller-getty

Every girl should have a printed dress to throw on and go for summer. For a piece that will take you from morning to night, we suggest a micro print in neutral tones.

prints-merricks-art

Merrick’s Art

Try a blousy printed silk T-shirt with a midi skirt for work. The proportions are perfection.

prints-atlantic-pacific

Atlantic Pacific

A rule of thumb when mixing prints (or shopping for a piece with two prints, like this dress) is to make sure the prints are of similar color families, but different scales. Try a micro print with an oversize print to maximize the effect.

prints-blonde-salad

The Blonde Salad

Try a sophisticated romper in printed silk. It has the ease of a sundress and the functionality of shorts. Pair with espadrilles.

prints-cupcakes-cashmere

Cupcakes and Cashmere

Anchor a matching set with a denim jacket. It helps to prevent your print of choice from feeling too overwhelming.

prints-damsel-dior

Damsel in Dior

With simple silhouettes, like a flowy silk midlength dress, look for a large yet understated pattern. With this much surface area, graphic prints in pretty pastels flatter best. Wear with neutral suede sandals, nothing too aggressive.

prints-pursuit-of-shoes

Pursuit of Shoes

A sweet patterned top softens up edgier pieces. Try a half-tuck of your top and style with a black mini and ankle boots (it’s also a great look to transition to fall).

prints-hello-fashion

Hello Fashion

A fun way to play with pattern this summer is to look for a dress with both a print and a texture. The design gives a colorful print interesting dimension.

prints-tina-leung-bfa

BFA

If you’re itching for a way to wear a large, bold pattern but still feel ladylike, look no further than the silk pencil-skirt-and-cami combo. Reach for a large-scale print with a neutral base color and tuck in a coordinating top.

12 of Your Favorite Summer Camp Trends Are All Grown Up

camp-collection

Nostalgic for the care-free days of summer camp? Though you may have outgrown the canoeing, craft-making, and color wars that made up the childhood experience, allow us to offer you a consolation prize: The trends you loved as a kid—friendship bracelets, tie-dye, ringer tees, and more—are back and all grown up. Take styling tips for how to rock these pieces as an adult from any of the 12 stylish ladies featured.

tie-dye-atlantic-pacific

Elevate tie-dye, the ultimate summer camp DIY, with single-hue prints in tailored silhouettes—think a midi skirt or shirtdress.

jean-shorts-where-did-u-get-that

Where Did U Get That

Shredded denim shorts don’t have to be tossed now that you’ve entered adulthood. Create your own from an old pair of jeans, then pair them with a crisp, tailored top and elegant shoes to make them feel more styled.

sweatshirt-sincerely-jules

Sincerely Jules

As a child, campfire nights called for crewneck sweatshirts, but the cozy style has reentered the wardrobe mix in a totally different way. Try styling it with a ladylike skirt and heels for a summer Friday at the office.

We Wore What

If you’re looking for casual, cool comfort turn to a pair of Converse sneakers. The rubber-soled classic works with everything from denim to silk chiffon!

overalls-look-de-pernille

Look de Pernille

If you haven’t jumped on the overalls train yet, summer is the perfect chance to do it. As a child you probably wore them with little more than a bathing suit underneath, but as an adult we suggest paring them with a crisp button-down shirt and flats.

Patches, the ultimate badges of honor and skill, now function as little accents that personalize leather bags and jeans alike.

bracelets-man-repeller
Friendship bracelets, arguably the most quintessential summer camp piece, can be worked as an adult with a few minor tweaks. Go with a tassel bracelet, an updated version of the camp staple, then upgrade it with bracelets and bangles made of silver and gold.

Camille Over The Rainbow

We crowned pool slides and Birkenstocks one of eight ugly trends we refuse to give up, and with good reason. Sometimes a gal just wants to be comfortable! Use them as the off-kilter finish to either a full-on normcore-inspired look or to style down a tailored look of trousers and a silk blouse.

Chicken: The Dangerous Transformation of America’s Favorite Food

Chicken: The Dangerous Transformation of America’s Favorite Food

Anthropologist Steve Striffler begins this book in a poultry processing plant, drawing on his own experiences there as a worker. He also reports on the way chickens are raised today and how they are consumed. What he discovers about America’s favorite meat is not just unpleasant but a powerful indictment of our industrial food system. The process of bringing chicken to our dinner tables is unhealthy for all concerned-from farmer to factory worker to consumer. The book traces the development of the poultry industry since the Second World War, analyzing the impact of such changes as the destruction of the family farm, the processing of chicken into nuggets and patties, and the changing makeup of the industrial labor force. The author describes the lives of immigrant workers and their reception in the small towns where they live. The conclusion is clear: there has to be a better way. Striffler proposes radical but practical change, a plan that promises more humane treatment of chickens, better food for the consumer, and fair payment for food workers and farmers.

See Your Favorite Supermodels in Their First Late Show With David Letterman Appearances

Entertainment stars bid farewell to David Letterman on his final show last night—and so did fashion stars, like Christy Turlington Burns, who posted this gem on Instagram:

My 2nd appearance on The Late Show at age 24 talking about @calvinklein #ThanksDave

A photo posted by Christy Turlington Burns (@cturlington) on

The legendary funnyman was known for interviewing many models early on in their careers. Among those who have passed through the hallowed halls of the Ed Sullivan Theatre: Naomi Campbell, Gisele Bundchen, Cindy Crawford, and Claudia Schiffer. These clips from the early ’80s and ’90s prove that in addition to being drop dead gorgeous, these supermodels are whip-smart, offering tart retorts to Letterman’s friendly jabs.

Turlington hit the show right after shooting an underwear commercial for Calvin Klein. The then-24-year-old told Letterman that she’d like to go back to school and become a writer someday when she retires from modeling. She went back to school indeed, but Turlington is still in hot demand today in fashion.
Naomi Campbell had a laugh with Letterman in 1995 when he noted that no one helped the supermodel up after a royal tumble on the runway in mile-high platform shoes.
A shy Cindy Crawford hit Letterman right after she famously signed on with Revlon. She told the host she went to college to become a chemical engineer, to which he responded, “Chemical engineers tend to be good looking?”
A 22-year-old Claudia Schiffer was full of zingers. When Letterman asked if Prince Albert of Monaco had proposed marriage, she played coy and teased that she had heard gossip that Letterman had an affair with Princess Diana.

The Gekkopod: My New Favorite Photography Accessory

2015-05-21-1432219933-8574980-GekkopodTrio.jpg

Accessories are a photographer’s best buddy in the field. From filters to tripods to camera bags, there are so many to choose from, and figuring out what works best for your needs can be daunting. I learned this recently when I started a YouTube series titled “In the Field with Heather Hummel Photography” where I walk viewers through the shot being captured and the settings used. It has been a lot of fun taking my audience into the field with me. My iPhone captures great videos; the only problem was trying to set it up where it would stay stable while recording the in-the-field footage! My short-term solution was to hold the iPhone myself and video the scene before me. This worked as a good solution because viewers can see the scene through my eyes. However, I like to connect with my viewers on a personal level and by my not being in the scene, I felt a bit disconnected. That is until I discovered the Gekkopod!
2015-05-21-1432220034-6116952-Gekkopod021BrickWallLR.jpg

I’ve written about the importance of using a tripod in low light photography, and now I have to share my new favorite accessory in the tripod division. The Gekkopod. Developed by Zuckerim, this cool, five-legged handy gadget has quickly become my go-to accessory for my iPhone when I use it to video record the “In the Field with Heather Hummel Photography” series.
2015-05-21-1432220088-8182227-Gekkopod019OutonaLimbLR.jpg

What I love about the Gekkopod, and although I have only had it for a short while, is that I am discovering countless uses for it. I use it as a simple stand for my iPhone, whether on my desk or nightstand. As a cyclist, I can wrap it around my handlebars, keeping my iPhone in view as I use the AllSport app, my speed and mileage et al tracker. Other athletes, especially those with GoPros, can take it on the run, bike, hike, or paddle with them and be able to capture their moments without needing someone else to take the shot or without having to outstretch an arm. Which brings me to one of the best aspects…the Gekkopod eliminates the need for the typical selfie, whether taken with an arm or a stick (which still often requires an outstretched arm to use it). Instead, with the Gekkopod, I can stand it up on a surface or wrap it around a branch or pole a few or several feet away. Then, I set the self-timer on the Camera app and within a few to ten seconds I have a natural looking shot without a bicep taking up half of the frame!
2015-05-21-1432220137-7026984-Gekkopod024OntheRocksLR.jpg

Weighing in at just 50-grams, I can clip the Gekkopod to my camera bag or wrap it around my tripod while trekking to my shoot without adding hardly any weight at all. The Gekkopod fits all popular smartphones. I have the iPhone 5s and it snaps in perfectly. There are also a few add-on adapters that allow me to swivel and turn the iPhone from horizontal to vertical, and anywhere in between, allowing for a variety of shots or to accommodate awkward angles. For example, if I’m shooting a video on a hiking trail and wrap the Gekkopod around a tree limb, I can adjust the swivel to make the iPhone as level as I need it during a shoot.
2015-05-21-1432220177-849912-Gekkopod026OntheRocksVerticalLR.jpg

As I shoot new footage for the “In the Field with Heather Hummel” series, I will be using the Gekkopod to ensure my ability to be in the shot. While I’m on my bike rides, I’ll be using it to stabilize my iPhone as I track my success for each mileage covered. While at my desk writing my next book, one of which is due to my publisher in ten days, I’ll use the Gekkopod as a stand to hold my iPhone next to my laptop. The next time I Skype with a client, I’ll also use it as a stand. The uses are countless, and this five-legged gadget will surely go on a lot of photography adventures with this photographer.

Dancing With the Stars Exclusive: Erin Andrews Picks Her Favorite Looks From Season 20!

Dancing With the Stars went big for season 20, and so did Erin Andrews. Not only did she take more fashion risks (jumpsuits and crop tops, anyone?), but she also ditched her Gisele-like extensions and cut her hair the shortest we’ve ever seen it. Before the first half of this week’s two-night finale, Erin exclusively talked to Glamour about her favorite looks of the season, and the reason behind that majorly chic chop!

erin-andrews-10-pantsuit

erin-andrews-crop-top-pantsuit“The two looks that I loved the most were two pantsuits, because that’s so me” Erin says. “I was so pumped to be able to do that in a fun way that was proper for the ballroom. Wearing a ball gown is great, but I feel more myself when I’m in pantsuit.”

erin-andrews-disney-night-2015“I really loved the yellow Prada we did for Disney night. It was just so perfect, and kind of like a Disney dress,” she says. “I stood in front of the [step and repeat] and started spinning around and it just felt so princess-y. The show was so magical that night.”

“A lot of people have been so sweet about [this Monique Lhuillier dress],” Erin says. “[People] said I either looked like a Disney princess of Glenda the Good Witch.”

erin-andrews-belted-dress-cream“The Stella McCartney one I wore the night of my birthday was a nice cream,” she says. “I cut my hair that day. We can all be honest, I’m obsessed with Gisele, but I was tired of the mermaid weave, and who was I really fooling with that whole thing after a while? I just wanted to change it up for a bit. It’s a different look and fun to play around with it.”

erin-andrews-red-dress-latin-night
“The red Dolce and Gabbana I wore for Latin Night I really liked. It was lace. We did a fun side ponytail.”

I mean….Thank you @martinkatzjewels @dancingabc

A photo posted by Erin Andrews (@erinandrews) on

“It’s been a major tease to be able to wear Martin Katz jewels this season because it’s the most gorgeous diamonds I’ve ever been able to wear,” she says. “I hate taking them off at the end of the night! The pictures and television don’t do it justice, but when I put it on in my dressing room, everyone gasps.”

“For tonight’s show, we originally weren’t into the dress I’m going to be wearing. But once I cut my hair, we tried it back on the other day and it looked great. I think for the finale, I’ve worn a little fancier, grander, ballroom gown, so we’ll probably do that again. Maybe the same color Rhianna wore to the Met Gala.” (Ed. note: Follow us on Twitter at @glamourmag for an exclusive first look at what Erin will wear tonight!)

So who does Erin think will win the special gold Mirrorball trophy tomorrow night? “Riker Lynch and Rumer Willis obviously have had the judges scores, but Noah Galloway is America’s sweetheart right now. People are pulling for him as they should for what he’s went through in his life and what he’s done for our country. I’m so excited. I’m honored that I got to know these three stars and everybody has been wonderful to work with. I think it’s going to be an emotional two nights.”

By the way, if you can’t get enough DWTS, check out our exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes scoop here. And join us on Periscope tonight prior to the show as we broadcast from behind the scenes!

What was your favorite look of Erin’s this season? Who do you think will win season 20 of DWTS?

‘Pinterest, You Are Drunk’ Is Your New Favorite Website

Pinterest is the intersection of achievable DIY projects and out-of-this-world, inspiring ideas. Channel Your Favorite Hollywood Mega Babe This Summer With This New Collection

Many an iconic swimsuit moment has resulted from classic movies (think Elizabeth Taylor’s so-simple-it-hurts white suit in Suddenly, Last Summer). Modern bikinis have never made it easy really capture the same vibes—until now. Super swimsuit purveyor Everything but Water set out to celebrate its 30th anniversary by recruiting 30 designers to create styles inspired by some of the most classic beach moments, ever. With new iterations of major moments from Brigitte Bardot and Farrah Fawcett, capturing the essence of your favorite vintage sexbomb has never been easier.

bo-derek-swimsuit-everything-but-water
Designer: Alé by Alessandra
Swimsuit Inspiration: Bo Derek in 10
The iconic still of Derek running on the beach in a nude one-piece with beads in her hair is a universally known image—and most of us have no idea what the movie’s actually about. Since it’s unlikely your summer look will involve the same braids, the new suit does it for you. “I knew the beads had to be part of the swimsuit,” Alessandra Ambrosio explained. Turning the one piece into a 21st-century monokini completed the modernization. Shop here.

marilyn-monroe-polka-dot-bikini-everything-but-water
Designer: Luli Fama
Swimsuit Inspiration: Marilyn Monroe
The design team of Luli Hanimian and Augusto Hanimian took bombshell inspiration from a photo of Marilyn wearing a polka-dot bikini in the ’50s. “Even though she was a sex icon, she was never a Barbie,” they wrote, and the idea inspires this combo of sexy cut with playful print. And like all things Marilyn, a suit this basic will never go out of style. Shop here.

brigitte-bardot-white-bikini-everything-but-water
Designer: Zimmermann
Swimsuit Inspiration: Brigitte Bardot in A Very Private Affair
Designer Nicky Zimmermann was drawn to the pic of Brigitte for its free, independent vibe. The original’s flirty ruffled skirt is reinterpreted with playfully trimmed briefs, still as girly but more figure-flattering, and the magic of modern fabrics means that today’s suit will hold its shape if you’re lounging à la Brigitte or getting into a game of beach volleyball. Shop here.

sally-field-gidget-yellow-bikini-everything-but-water
Designer: PilyQ
Swimsuit Inspiration: Sally Field in Gidget
“Our mission is to make women feel beautiful and confident in what they’re wearing. The most important accessory is always confidence,” designer Pily Queipo told us. Field’s spunky surfer girl Gidget had that in spades, as exemplified by her sunflower-yellow suit. The bright hue and ruffles stayed, but coverage was cut back to modernize the style. Shop here.

farrah-fawcett-becca-one-piece
Designer: Becca
Swimsuit Inspiration: Farrah Fawcett’s famous poster
That poster was on every boy’s wall across this country, and she was my icon even at an early age. I spent hours trying to get my hair to look like hers,” designer Rebecca Virtue told us. There’s little about the simple tank that can be improved upon (the relaxed V-neck is super flattering on all busts), but the team left their own mark with new-for-now rings bringing an extra dose of sizzle. Designer: Despi
Swimsuit Inspiration: Phoebe Cates in Fast Times at Ridgemont High
“Phoebe’s look in the movie’s hot hormone-raging pool scene is epic. It captures the glory days of youth,” designer Despina Filios wrote. Since part of what earned this little red bikini its spot in the swimsuit hall of fame is the way it’s presented, slowly emerging from the pool, Filios made sure to re-create the effect with crystal tassels. And since no one’s itching to get back to high-cut ’80s bottoms, this one is done for now, with special seaming on the rear to create “a heart-shaped bottom.” Shop here.

Here’s How to Wear Your Favorite Summer Prints to Work

Florals, gingham and polka dots aren’t exactly what you think of when it comes to getting dressed for work in the spring and summertime. But we say there’s no reason to reserve these fantastic prints for the weekend.

Dressing in prints is all about balance and working within a color family to make the look cohesive. Take a cue from the work-perfect looks here:

office-prints-girl-with-curves
Polka Dots
When wearing polka dots, especially to the office, it’s best to keep the print on the small scale—less Minnie Mouse, more Marilyn Monroe. We love this tan microdot skirt and simple black cap-sleeve top and skinny belt. Throw on a pair of city sandals and you’re good to go.

office-prints-what-the-chung
Abstract Prints
Working in the same blue color family, she’s able to combine stripes and an abstract-print pencil skirt. The navy blazer pulls it all together seamlessly.

office-prints-imaxtree
Stripes
Stripes are the most basic print to work into any part of your work wardrobe. This understated striped top with a feminine midi skirt and city sandals make for the ideal work-to-outdoor-drinks look.

office-prints-style-heroine
Gingham
Gingham is one of the more challenging prints to pull off at the office. It becomes office-appropriate when done in a shirtdress. You can also opt for a gingham button-down shirt to pair with a midi skirt. A brown or black belt and simple pumps are a must with gingham to give your summer work look the extra-tailored appeal.

Roses are red, violets are blue, what a favorite color says about a kid is really, really true. It’s common knowledge that girls like pink and boys like blue and that there’s no changing that.

Or is there?

Well, I did some digging into what a child’s favorite color actually says about their identity, and the results are astounding.

How Cell Phones Would Have Ruined Most of Our Favorite Movies

If you’re a pop culture maven, most likely it can be agreed that the modern cell phone can be traced back to two classic TV series of the 1960s: Star Trek and Get Smart. Captain James Tiberius Kirk and his USS Enterprise crew were always armed with their “communicators” when traveling abroad on a distant planet. They were palm-sized devices with covers the flipped open, providing instant connection with the orbiting space ship. This design was aped, no doubt, by former Trekkies for the classic “flip phone” design that ruled the high-tech roost in the late 90s and early millennium.

Secret Agent 86 Maxwell Smart had his shoe phone, surely the most creative (and ridiculous) example of technology ever invented by someone who was most likely thought to be a creative and scientific genius. However, it did enable Max to get out of one sticky situation after another. After all, how many bad guys confiscate a spy’s shoes after he’s been captured? With these questions in mind, we’ll take a look at a handful of classic movies, and how they literally couldn’t have played out, if they had been set in a cell phone-ruled universe.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Spirited teen Dorothy Gale runs head-on into a 19th century Kansas tornado in search of her terrier, Toto, who’s run off. Now, if Oz had taken place in 21st century Kansas, not only would Dorothy and all her relatives, farm hands and neighbors have smart phones stuck into that big front pocket of their overalls, Toto would have been stuck with a microchip by the local vet when he was just a pup, enabling Dorothy to track him via Google and changing her desperate, fumbling search for him through the cornfields into an easy search that would have taken all of ninety seconds. Cut to Dorothy: “Bad dog!” Dorothy snatches up said dog, scrambles into the storm cellar with time to spare, grabbing a piping hot biscuit for herself from Auntie Em’s fresh batch in the kitchen, and a stew bone for Toto. No conk on the head. No hallucinating about Munchkins, poppy fields and animated scarecrows. And no drug problem for the college-bound Dorothy a few years later because, let’s face it: once you’ve been to Oz, you’d wanna keep going back. And back. And back…

Casablanca (1942)
Former lovers Ilsa and Rick are reunited in Nazi-occupied North Africa. There is still major chemistry between the two, but Ilsa’s heart belongs to her husband, noble Hungarian freedom fighter Victor Laszlo. If Ilsa and Rick had cell phones, their first meeting never would have taken place. Think about it: a chick dumps your ass in Paris, the most romantic city on Earth, in the middle of a frickin’ rainstorm. What’s the first thing you do? You defriend her sorry excuse for a girlfriend on Facebook and get all your real buds to do the same! The minute Ilsa and Victor arrived at Rick’s Café Americana, and of course “checked-in” on Facebook, that one semi-catty female “pal” that stayed in touch with both Rick and Ilsa would inform Rick post-haste that Ilsa was in his establishment. Rick would then text Captain Louis Renault, dropping dime on the fact that the Nazi-wanted Laszlo was in his joint. Louis and his boys would arrest the hot couple on the spot, without Rick ever having to deal with them directly. End of story, with revenge served as the coldest of cold dishes on Rick’s part. Final fade out has Rick telling Sam to tinkle the ivories with the J. Giles Band classic “Love Stinks” as Rick dances with a beautiful Casablancan gal.

Vertigo (1958)
Alfred Hitchcock’s classic, cited by the British Film Institute as the greatest film ever made, could have played out much the same for its first half, until Kim Novak’s Madeline Elster character is “reborn” as Judy Barton, discovered by James Stewart’s ex-cop Scottie Ferguson on the streets of San Francisco. In the world of cell phones and the Internet, Scottie would have become a shut-in after the trauma of losing Madeline, spending all his time surfing dating and hook-up sites on the web and his phone. While cruising chicks on Tinder one lonely night, Scottie would have discovered Madeline/Judy’s profile, as the forlorn girl is now looking for love herself. Scottie quickly puts the pieces together via Photoshop, comparing and contrasting picks of Madeline and Judy under extreme magnification, realizing they’re one and the same. After setting up a Coffee Bean date with “Judy” using a fake Tinder profile picture, Scottie spikes her chai latte with drugged almond milk, taking her to the Golden Gate Bridge, making her confess all as she comes to. As the cops drag Judy off, Scottie throws his cell phone into the San Francisco Bay, deciding to move up to an Oregon commune where all technology is forbidden.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
“E.T. phone home!” Well, here’s the thing: if we’d had cellphones in 1982, what do you think an uber-advanced alien would’ve had at that point? He would’ve phoned home. As in post-haste. As in, “Dude, what h-e-double hockey sticks are you guys thinking?! You left me stranded!” The captain of E.T.’s ship, scared shitless that his commanding officer, who happens to be E.T.’s uncle, will find out about this, uses a top secret do-hickey to travel back in time to the point where E.T. wandered off in the first place, grabbing him and dragging him onto the ship, chastising his subordinate for being “a space cadet.” Meanwhile, Elliott, Gertie and the nice suburban family have a normal suburban life, and adopt a Golden Retriever puppy a few months later. They name him Fernando, which translates to “brave traveler,” and got the idea from a new naming app Gertie downloaded onto her iPhone 6.

Kelly Clarkson And Jimmy Fallon Sing All Your Favorite Duets

“The Tonight Show” just went all “From Justin Jimmy to Kelly.”

Singer Kelly Clarkson made headlines recently when she said no one wanted to do duets with her. Well, you can pretty much forget about that because Clarkson joined host Jimmy Fallon on Monday to sing some of the greatest duets ever.

In “History of Duets,” the pair covered everything from Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe” to Diana Ross & Lionel Richie’s “Endless Love.”

Fallon’s other “History” videos have included rapping with Justin Timberlake and hip-hop dancing with Will Smith. Whether you think this new version takes two steps forward or two steps back, as Paula Abdul and MC Skat Kat would say, it comes together ‘cuz “Opposites Attract.”

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

5 Reasons Rod Stewart Is Our Favorite Frontman On His 70th Birthday

Rod Stewart turns 70 on Saturday (Jan. 10), and in addition to wishing the rocker a happy birthday, we’d like to pay him a little tribute. Here are five reasons why we love him — a lot:

1. He is one of the last frontmen still standing.
Don’t believe us. Even Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin fame noted in The Telegraph, “There are only three or four frontmen left, from our time, who actually just kick the mic stand up and do it, and that’s me, Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger.”

Last October marked the 50th anniversary of Stewart’s release of his first single, his take on the blues classic “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl.” That’s staying power and Stewart is proof that if you love what you are doing, you can just keep doing it. He maintains an active touring schedule which this year includes New Zealand, Australia and Las Vegas, of course.

2. Half the world’s post-50 population lost its virginity with “Maggie May” playing in the background.
OK, a slight exaggeration, but please raise your hand if you associate that classic with the smell of Brut or English Leather. Uh-huh, point proved.

3. He’s on Facebook.
Sure, a lot of celebrities from the music world are on social media. But how many of them at his age rack up engagement numbers like Stewart’s? He regularly amasses 1.2 million views of his videos posted on Facebook (including the multiple times we hit the play button at work.) And how can you not love a guy who posts photos from his Rome hotel room without his pants on?

4. He invented the long shag haircut for men.
OK, maybe he didn’t invent it, but he sure brought it to the world stage. Stewart was way ahead of those long-shag cuts on Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee. Stewart’s hair style was hair “possibly the flagship mane for this specific mens’ haircut,” according to the Men’s Hair Forum on rock star hairstyles. There you have it.

5. He values education, even if it means paying more in taxes.
Rod Stewart left Britain for Los Angeles in 1975 to avoid paying 83 percent of his income in taxes. In fact, his 1975 album “Atlantic Crossing” is a reference to his repatriation in the U.S. But last summer, he announced that he would be returning to his birth land so that his youngest two children (he has eight in total) could be educated there.

So what do YOU love about Rod Stewart? Let us know in comments.

Remember Your Favorite Fleece From College? Designers Say It’s Time to Bring It Back

altuzarra-fleece

In his fall show, Altuzarra sent models down the runway in evening dresses and skirts styled with what we can most accurately describe as Patagonia-style fleeces. Though the styling was epically amazing, it may have fallen a little short of practical for most of us. That being said, it did nothing to stop us from swooning over each and every piece.

Altuzarra reminded us of the Patagonias of our past that we didn’t even realize we had forgotten about. So, in lieu of a black-tie event fit for the likes of his satin gowns, the winter season is the perfect time to appreciate a great fleece. Cozier than anything you will ever own, your fleece can be rocked everywhere from the ski slopes to the city streets. This winter, I definitely pulled a few of my old fleeces out of storage and—confession time—I even bought an awesome pullover from Crewcuts (seriously, shop some of the larger sizes in the boys’ department and you’ll be surprised what you can find!).

Now, some of you may have already tossed the fleeces of your past, and others are not overly enthusiastic to shell out designer prices for your fleece of choice. For both those reasons and more, we have rounded up 20 of the best fleeces of the season. Grab one before the holidays and cozy up at home with your family and friends!

How do you stay warm through the winter? Do you love the retro fleece trend as much as we do?

Christmas in Who-ville 2014: A Doctor Who Gift Guide for Your Favorite Time Lords and Ladies

2014-12-19-Whoville2014.jpg

Santa Claus is a Time Lord. Like the ancient race of Gallifreyans from the 51-year-old British sci-fi series Doctor Who, St. Nick can manipulate time and space, uses “bigger on the inside” tech with his bag of toys, loves candy (maybe even Jelly Babies), and generally encourages a sense of optimism and wonder around his companions of choice: humans.

Santa as a Time Lord is not a new concept; actually it kind of was when I suggested it last year with my first Christmas in Who-ville Gift Guide. But what began as a nerdy theory for last year’s 50th anniversary of the long-running show feels even more like a reality now that Santa Claus is teaming up with the Doctor in the annual Doctor Who Christmas Special, “Last Christmas,” airing stateside at 9 p.m. on Dec. 25.

Over the past nine years, the Christmas specials have become a modern holiday tradition for fans, but showrunner Steven Moffat said in a recent interview the connection between the Saint and the Doctor runs deeper. Like the holiday season, he said the show is something that brings families together.

Doctor Who isn’t like other sci-fi shows because it’s kind of more magical than that,” Moffat added. “It’s a sort of a magic man in a magic box all like dressed up in sci-fi language … and it features at its core this improbable man with a time machine who does feel like the science fiction equivalent of Santa Claus.”

Aside from a comic strip featuring the first incarnation of the Doctor (played by William Hartnell), “Last Christmas” is the first time the two will square off. And if the teasers are any indication, sparks between the two guardians of humanity will fly.

To celebrate this meeting of two larger-than-life characters, I present my second Huffington Post Christmas in Who-ville Gift Guide. Whether you’re buying for yourself or your favorite companion, what follows are perfect goodies for Whovians. And although the shopping days until the 25th are dwindling, remember that time is never really an issue for Time Lords and Ladies.

Expert Who-ligans
Artist Ian Leino’s “Doctor Who-ville” Seussian tee (above, $ 20) was a perfect blend of holiday joy and sci-fi nerdiness when it first debuted. It featured 11 generations of the Doctor, and K-9, singing a Time Lord carol around the TARDIS. But this year Leino has updated the design to include not only the War Doctor but Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi and The Moment device. The image is ccreenprinted on American Apparel 100% soft jersey cotton shirts. And while you’re at it, check out Josiah Bancroft’s Who-liday poem on Leino’s site.

2014-12-19-PixelWho.jpg
Another fan whose work is right at home in Who-ville is Nathan Skreslet and his Pixel Who art. Combining 8-bit pixels with an insane amount of knowledge about the show, Skreslet has created some of the most detailed Who designs out there. The prints are essentially character line-ups from the show, largely focusing on various incarnations of the Doctor. Even for an expert Whovian, the level of minutia he fits into the prints is staggering. Check out the two-part Fourth Doctor set ($ 57) as an example – and let it serve as a warning never to challenge Nathan in Doctor Who trivia.

2014-12-19-DoctorWhoWatch.jpg
Timeless style
Not to borrow from a different sci-fi franchise but you can’t help but look at this collector’s watch and think, “Shiny!” A fantastic item with stainless steel bezel and leather strap, the TARDIS watch ($ 180) features elements from the iconic blue police call box. With Gallifreyan script and Roman numerals on the face, this would easily be appreciated as a designer timepiece if seen by the non-Whovian (though they might wonder about your affiliation with the St. John Ambulance Association). But when spotted by a true believer, you’ll receive a nod of approval. This is a gift for the discerning fan who wants to live like a Time Lord every day. Meanwhile, the “Spin Doctor” from Paul Michael Design is a gorgeous Doctor Who-inspired pendant ($ 295+) available in sterling silver, 14 karat white and yellow gold as well as platinum. It can also be customized in an enameled version, or with diamonds and sapphires and created gems. Take it for a spin on the town or through the galaxy.

2014-12-19-TardisBathroom.jpg
Bath Time Lord
Do you wish you had more time to enjoy the shower? Incorporate a little Doctor Who into your bathroom, and you might start to feel like you have all the time in the universe to enjoy your morning routine. It can feel like you’re stepping inside a TARDIS when you hang the blue police box shower curtain in your loo ($ 20), but you should make your cleaning space feel bigger on the inside with the Who shower rack ($ 30). On the outside, step onto a soft blue box with the TARDIS bath mat (also great for living spaces), and dry off with the plush 100 percent cotton three-piece TARDIS towel set tastefully designed with police call box images ($ 50). To round out your morning, spend some time in the Fourth Doctor robe ($ 70). Brown like Tom Baker’s coat, with a multi-colored collar resembling his scarf, this is the perfect wardrobe to spend a luxurious day (or seven seasons) in.

2014-12-19-DoctorWhoKitchen.jpg
Kitchen Master
One of the truly great parts of all these products dedicated to the show is how great they look even to non-fans. The blue police call box design is minimal and modern, and catches the eye without being gaudy. As such, I give you TARDIS teatime, an assembly of Who items for your eating space. Protect your tabletops with a TARDIS tablecloth made out of a cotton/polyester blend, measuring 54.8″ x 73″ ($ 20), and set the table with four Melamine square plates ($ 25) featuring the classic call box elements. The light-up TARDIS Cookie Jar ($ 20), which makes VWORPing sounds, will also perfectly hold some Jammy Dodgers. Of course you’ll need to serve up some biscuits on a blue TARDIS tea tray ($ 30), which actually fits quite a bit – including a lightweight ceramic TARDIS teapot. Unlike the time machine, you can pop the top off this box, brew 25 ounces of tea within it, and easily pour it out through a big blue spout (definitely a Cyberman-approved upgrade). In case of spills, you should also order a set of machine washable cotton tea towels, one that looks like the front of the TARDIS while the other is the telephone panel sign ($ 20).

2014-12-19-DoctorrWhoTheMattSmithYearsBluRay.jpg
View to a Who
It has been about a year since Matt Smith departed from the series, but the actor’s legacy as one of the show’s most popular Doctors lives on. To celebrate his time on the TARDIS, BBC released the “Complete Matt Smith Years” Blu-ray collector’s set ($ 134). Presented within a lovely book – designed to look like silver Gallifreyan symbols carved into worn TARDIS-blue wood – the 16-disc collection includes every Matt Smith episode, along with “The Day of the Doctor” 50th Anniversary Special, “The Time of the Doctor” Christmas Special and the “An Adventure In Space And Time” TV movie. It additionally contains a previously unreleased bonus disc chockablock with the “Doctor Who Proms 2013,” “The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot,” “Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide,” and Smith’s two-episode appearance on The Sarah Jane Adventures. The set is a must-have for Smith fans, and an ultimate send-off to the immensely popular Eleventh Doctor. After saying goodbye to 11, say hello to the Twelth Doctor with the complete Season Eight on DVD ($ 72). Starring Peter “attack eyebrows” Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, the (appropriately)12-episode season set includes behind-the-scenes footage for each installment, a tour of the TARDIS, and a mini-doc following the “Doctor Who World Tour.” It also includes a video for The Foxes’ version of Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” as seen on the episode “Mummy on the Orient Express.”

While not a Time Lord, the Great Detective Sherlock Holmes is something of a spiritual cousin to the Doctor, and as such has earned a spot on this list. Also executive produced by Steven Moffat (and co-created with Whovian Mark Gatiss), Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Smaug/Khan/Dr. Strange) and Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins/Arthur Dent) 21st century versions of Holmes and trusty Watson. This limited edition Blu-ray set ($ 150) collects every episode from the show’s exceptional three seasons, and also includes two original art cards and a bonus disc that with “never-before-seen” outtakes, a deleted scene, BBC archive interviews, and audio commentaries. But there is no mystery to the fact that the Sherlock and John mini-busts are the best part of the gift, and would look great on a bookshelf in any home or TARDIS.

Polyenso’s ’17 New Years’ Just Created Your New Favorite Genre Of Music

It’s late on a Wednesday in September, and the boys of Polyenso — Alex Schultz, Brennan Taulbee and Denny Agosto — are headed to The Bends, one of their favorite bars in St. Petersburg, Florida. The walls adorned with oddities: a brass taco, a caged monkey, a gargoyle who looks like a demonic Yoda and a picture of a youthful, mustachioed Burt Reynolds enshrined above the center of the bar. The Bends acts as Brooklyn-ish transplant, serving as a refuge for the young adults of St. Pete who are looking for something outside the stale polos and short-sleeve, button-ups that permeate so much of the city like a bad rerun of “Miami Vice.”

As our basic introductory conversation begins budding into new friendship, an informercial, of sorts, comes on the television that flickers on the back wall of the bar. Sequence after sequence, middle-aged men in suits cut through pig’s heads, turkeys and rope pillars with two-handed swords, axes and all sorts of exotic knives. The set looks like a medieval dining hall. Enraptured by the video’s absurdity and awesomeness, we are all struck by the same thought: “We are totally going to cut some large objects with a sword one of these nights.”

And so we did. It’s funny how far a joke can go after a trip to Walmart and a few stops at bars.

“It just has so many deep, beautiful meanings to it. To us it represents perfection within imperfection.”
Polyenso breaks down into two parts: “poly” and “enso.” “Poly,” the prefix meaning “many,” also captures the band’s proclivity for polyrhythms. “Enso” is a symbol in Zen Buddhism that is a circle drawn in a single brushstroke. Never a perfect circle, thicker and thinner at certain sections, among many things it expresses a “moment when the mind is free to let the body create.”

“We knew the music was going to have these electronic elements sprinkled in,” Schultz said. “We knew it was going to be some types of music that maybe people haven’t combined before. ‘Poly’ kind of had that futuristic thing to it that we loved. But then we ditched ‘poly’ and I discovered ‘enso’ and brought it to the guys. It just has so many deep, beautiful meanings to it. To us it represents perfection within imperfection. You do it once and the beauty is in that imperfection. We went back to ‘poly’ and not only did it have this ring to it, but now we have ‘enso’ and we’re each our own. It represents something a little different for each of us.”

The band released their debut album, “One Big Particular Loop,” at the beginning of 2013, an exceptional record that captured stylings of acts such as Radiohead, R.E.M. and Coldplay. For several months now, the band has been in studio crafting their sophomore album, before premiering the first track, “17 New Years.”

While there is a tying thread between their harmonic choices, rhythmic choices and Taulbee’s vocals, Polyenso’s new work is a significant departure from their debut. Described as “urban indie progressive” by Agosto, the album demonstrates their listening habits of hip-hop, neo-soul and experimental electronic music, mashing elements from acts like Flying Lotus, Bonobo, Common, The Roots, Bright Eyes, Bob Dylan, The Beatles and Justin Timberlake. But when it comes down to it, Polyenso has created a sound that is entirely their own. As Schultz notes, the failure to sound like your idols is how you create your own sound.

“The common goal is to find our version of a universal sound, as hard as that is because you can’t please everybody,” Agosto said. “I feel like it’s important to take a lot of those modern influences or old influences and put it in a cadence that is simple to understand, and, at the same time, be new and recycled.”

“It appeals to a wider genre, but taps into a more abstract style,” Taulbee said.

Recording in label Big3’s studio in St. Petersburg, the band came to producer Jason Pennock’s attention after a local promoter told him there was “only one band here worth knowing.” A long history in the business, having worked on a variety of hip-hop and pop records from Tupac to The Pussycat Dolls, Pennock described Polyenso as “some of the most creative people he has ever met.” He labeled his role as more of a psychiatrist, pushing and nudging the band instead of controlling, and encouraging the guys to be “wickedly honest” with each other.

“We’re all in the room a slave to the song,” Pennock said. “The song is actually more important than any of us, so leave the ego at the door because as much as I’d like my precious idea on the song, it’s more about the song dictating itself. They just live inside that space. There’s so much trust. They allow each other to make mistakes and explore.”

“That way you aren’t just hearing the guitar, drums, bass, piano, whatever your instruments may be. You hear almost a whole movie scene.”
For the new album, the band decided to rid themselves of all rules and barriers and experiment with a whole different approach to songwriting. Written almost entirely while in studio, they have forgone concerns of live-performance translation, choosing to focus on each song in that exact moment. Even when a track is fully written, they can think of something different, switch out those parts and give the song an entirely different vibe from where it started.

Hanging out in the studio’s kitchen, Schultz explained how each member has a hand in every instrument, and that there is no limit to the sounds they are hoping to capture on the album.

“This is one of my favorite instruments,” Schultz said, pulling out a wooden bowl from below the sink. We were sipping on rum and cokes. “It just sounds so good.”

“And the spatula that he plays it with,” Pennock added.

“The spatula was a great find,” Schultz said. “That’s on like three tracks.”

Besides kitchen utensils, Agosto has taken his passion for sound design to add organic noise into the songs.

“Brennan showed me this Bright Eyes song from the album ‘Digital Ash in a Digital Urn,’ and the lyric was, ‘I feel like a piñata, why don’t you take a swing at me,’” Agosto said. “They put sample in the background of kids smacking on something, and they were laughing at the same time, and that painted the scene for me. I’ve heard it in other things before, but it never got my attention like that did. From then on, and that was quite some time ago, now I want certain parts or certain words in songs to make you feel like you’re there. I just take live sounds of certain things, and make instruments and samples out of different things that I hear. That way you aren’t just hearing the guitar, drums, bass, piano, whatever your instruments may be. You hear almost a whole movie scene.”

For example, one song includes the lyric “I’ll be going away for a little while, getting on a plane, thinking about not landing.” When Taulbee sings “getting on a plane,” Agosto added the ding of the seatbelt sign he recorded on an airplane, and when Taulbee sings “not landing,” he added a recording of a pilot saying, “Enjoy your flight.” They are subtle details, but they add an incredible amount of depth to the record.

“It’s the shallow part, so if the singer is sexy, it’s like, ‘Hell yeah, man, I wanna date this band!’”
“17 New Years” is about a moment in a relationship when you realize that the person you love is using you as a scapegoat for their past emotional injuries. And despite how much you care for them and want them, you can’t let them bring you down. “Is that all I meant to you?” the chorus begs, even though the answer is already known.

“It’s a really relationship-y record,” Taulbee said. “It’s about being friends, having your heart broken and really loving somebody.”

The song marks the first vocal appearance by Schultz, who handles the chorus. Taulbee sings the verses.

“There’s this dynamic between the two of them that was never there before,” Pennock said. “I’m a big fan of Brennan’s voice; he’s like a god to me. Being involved with projects, it’s like when you meet a girl, the lead singer is so important because no one falls in love with a girl at first because of her personality. It’s always the pretty factor, so the singer is that. It’s the body. It’s the shallow part, so if the singer is sexy, it’s like, ‘Hell yeah, man, I wanna date this band!’ And then you meet them and you realize they’re the marrying type. Not only is she hot, but she likes football, too. It’s the singer first, and the songs and always these little qualities and you think, ‘I can bring this band home to mom.’ Now, his dynamic has changed it. He didn’t do a lot of singing before, but it all just started with one part in one song. […] Could I listen to a whole album of just Brennan? For sure, but each have their own tone, so adding Alex’s vocals in just takes it to the next level.”

“It’s better to be original than good. I don’t think good is enough anymore.”
Music is at a turning point. The rise of streaming services have opened up a pool of options that is larger than one person could consume in a lifetime. With unlimited access to any song at any time in any place, the blending of genres has never been more important. As Pennock noted, “It’s better to be original than good. I don’t think good is enough anymore.”

That’s what Polyenso represents. It is truly rare to witness individuals who are absolutely in tune with their artistic vision and capabilities at work. It feels like a step into the future, where not only can you see the significance of what they are currently creating, but also how important they will be going forward. There’s something very spiritual to their music. From start to finish, their songs capture you in a moment, and in that moment we are all imperfect perfect beings together.
