California Lawmakers Pass Talent Protections Act to Help Models and Entertainers Fight Sexual Harassment and Eating Disorders

FIGHTING HARASSMENT: Models in California now have a little more legal reenforcement thanks to the passage of the Talent Protections Act, which was created to fight sexual harassment and eating disorders. While not designed solely for models, the law is geared for the state’s fashion and entertainment industries. California Gov. Jerry Brown signed it into law Sept. 30 and it will take effect in January.
The Model Alliance, the New York-based organization that champions models’ rights, worked closely with California State Assembly member Marc Levine, detailing models’ experiences to help develop the law and calling for its support.
Under the law, talent agencies must create educational materials about sexual harassment prevention and retaliation, as well as information about good nutrition and eating disorders for adults. For minors starting out in the entertainment industry, they and their parents, or respective legal guardian, will be required to have training in these areas. The law also mandates that information about nutrition be provided to fashion models.
Models are routinely advised to lose weight, according to what is said to be the largest survey to date on eating disorders among professional models. Published last year in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, the study was an effort

Cardi B Mourns Mac Miller’s Death Shortly Before Fight with Nicki Minaj: ‘It’s Very Sad’

Shortly before attacking Nicki Minaj at a party on Friday night, Cardi B shared a heartfelt message about Mac Miller, who was pronounced dead from an apparent overdose hours earlier.

It’s very sad,” the “I Like It” rapper, 25, told Billboard while attending the Harper’s Bazaar ICONS party during New York Fashion Week, where she would later get into a physical altercation with Minaj.

She went on to share that she hoped that at the end of his life, Miller, 26, wasn’t struggling with “the pressure that fame brings you.”

“I feel like people don’t know that fame brings you a lot of sadness, a lot of pressure,” she remarked. “I just hope that now he’s in a better place.”

When asked whether she had a message for the late rapper’s family, Cardi replied, “Stay strong, look in the sky, look for messages — he will be sending some.”

“They always send messages in the weirdest way. Maybe in a dream, maybe something. You’ll find it,” she added.

Miller, whose real name was Malcolm McCormick, was pronounced dead at 11:51 a.m. at his Studio City, California, home on Friday, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE.

A cause of death is yet to be determined, but a source told PEOPLE that Miller had gone into cardiac arrest after appearing to suffer a drug overdose.

In an interview with the rapper that was released just one day before his death, Miller told Vulture that he did experience “pressure” growing up in the public eye, especially as he’s been very open about his struggles with drugs and sobriety.

“A lot of times in my life I’ve put this pressure to hold myself to the standard of whatever I thought I was supposed to be, or how I was supposed to be perceived. And that creates pressure,” he explained.

“It’s annoying to be out and have someone come up to me and think they know. They’re like, ‘Yo, man, are you okay?’ I’m like ‘Yeah, I’m f— at the grocery store.’ You know?,” he added. “It’s the job. This is what I signed up for.”

RELATED VIDEO: LISTEN: Mac Miller Was Working on Music Hours Before His Death

Following his Macadelic tour in 2012 and the release of his first studio album Blue Slide Park, Miller admitted he turned to drugs to cope with stress.

“I love lean; it’s great… I was not happy and I was on lean very heavy,” Miller told Complex in 2013. “I was so f—ed up all the time it was bad. My friends couldn’t even look at me the same. I was lost.”

While Miller attempted to turn his life around within the past couple of years, he was arrested for DUI in May, shortly after news broke that Miller and Ariana Grande had split.

Last month he told Rolling Stone he doesn’t classify himself as a drug addict. “If a bunch of people think I am a huge drug addict, Okay. Cool,” he said. “What can I really do? Go talk to all those people and be like, ‘Naw man, it’s really not that simple?’ Have I done drugs? Yeah. But am I a drug addict? No.”

Balenciaga Apologizes to Chinese Customers for Fight at Printemps

BEIJING — A video clip of a violent scuffle involving several Balenciaga customers at Printemps in Paris has prompted an apology from the brand, after it fielded accusations that it discriminated against Chinese shoppers.
According to the user who uploaded the video, the fight broke out when French shoppers attempted to enter, bypassing a line of Chinese customers waiting for their turn.
“Boycott Balenciaga discriminating against Chinese. Really angry, queuing up and yet get hit by the people cutting in line. From now on, buy Chinese Li Ning [the sportswear brand],” the video caption read, adding that Balenciaga would not be able to sell its shoes if Chinese consumers stopped buying them.
The brand apologized in a statement on Thursday saying, “The house of Balenciaga regrets the incident that took place yesterday morning at a department store in Paris while customers were waiting to enter its corner shop. The security staff acted immediately to restore the calm. Balenciaga sincerely apologizes to the customers who were present and reaffirms its strong commitment to respect equally all its customers.”
One witness wrote on WeChat that every day she lined up to buy Balenciaga sneakers, and on a daily basis French-Albanian shoppers cut in front but she always held her

Female Activists, Antifur Protesters Fight Their Causes at London Fashion Week

BARE NECESSITIES: Topless, or scantily clad, female activists braved the cold February weather to stage protests during fashion week, capitalizing on the media throngs at shows to gain attention.
On Friday, both PETA supporters and advocates for a more body-inclusive runway caused scenes, shouting out for their respective causes. The antifur contingent had “wear your own skin” painted on their bare torsos, and encouraged passersby to stand up for animals by embracing a vegan wardrobe. On the subject of fur, Elisa Allen, director of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said: “It’s not fabric, and it’s not ours for the taking.”
Meanwhile, the pro-curves protesters held plaques that read “fashion rules rewritten” and wore lingerie by Simply Be, a plus-size brand. American model and actress Hayley Hasselhoff led the way, accompanied by eight activists who demanded to know when more curvaceous women will be seen on runways. Angela Spindler, chief executive officeroff N Brown Group plc, which owns Simply Be, said: “This isn’t about ‘skinny shaming.’ We think that shape should be celebrated irrespective of size.”
The women all got their say – and a few goosebumps.

Burberry Foundation Aims to Fight Poverty in Italy With Oxfam

THE ITALIAN CONNECTION: The Burberry Foundation, an independent charity, is handing a three million pounds grant to Oxfam to help struggling communities in the Italian region of Tuscany, once a thriving hub of luxury leather and clothing manufacturing.
The foundation grant has been earmarked to support “community cohesion” and help struggling families in the region which is facing increasing levels of poverty, youth unemployment and economic migration as traditional manufacturing dwindles.
Burberry said the project in Tuscany is also in line with its own responsibility agenda to support one million people in the communities that sustain the wider luxury industry.
The foundation and Oxfam will work toward improving integration between the Italian and migrant communities around Florence. The program will run until 2022 and will develop new and existing community centers that offer help, employment support, educational activities and Italian language classes.
Leanne Wood, a trustee of the Burberry Foundation and chief people and corporate affairs officer at Burberry, said: “Oxfam’s work in the region of Tuscany is vital in bringing local communities together to build a bright and prosperous future.”

Charlie Gard’s Parents Fight to Bring Terminally Ill Son Home: Our ‘Last Wish Is That Charlie Dies at Home’

Connie Yates returned to London’s High Court on Tuesday to request permission for her and her partner, Chris Gard, to bring their terminally ill son, Charlie Gard, home to die — just one day after ending their legal fight over treatment of their 11-month-old son.

London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), where Charlie has been receiving treatment since October, argued that there are no doctors able to oversee Charlie’s death at home and expressed concerns about getting the proper medical equipment into the couple’s home.

Their lawyer, Grant Armstrong, told Judge Nicholas Francis that his clients’ “last wish is that Charlie dies at home.”

“The parents wish for a few days of tranquillity outside of a hospital setting,” he said. “The parents had hoped that Great Ormond Street would work with them.”

Yates added: “We promised Charlie every day we would take him home. It seems really upsetting after everything we’ve been through to deny us this.”

Lawyers for GOSH told Judge Francis they “would like to be able to fulfill the parents’ wishes… if it is safe and practicable and in Charlie’s best interests.” GOSH doctors argued that moving Charlie to a hospice would be the best option.

The court has given the family until noon on Wednesday to find a medical practitioner that is prepared to take up the couple’s case.

Charlie, who was born on August 4, 2016, has a rare genetic condition called mitochondrial depletion syndrome, which causes progressive muscle weakness and brain damage. He is currently on life support and unable to move his limbs or eat or breathe without assistance. His parents wanted to take him to the U.S. for nucleoside therapy. And after a lengthy legal battle, they made the decision to end their fight on Monday.

A lawyer representing Chris Gard and Connie Yates told the High Court that “time had run out” for Charlie after a U.S. doctor said it was too late to give him nucleoside therapy. The parents were given the test results from Charlie’s most recent scans on Friday.

“Charlie has suffered extensive muscular atrophy,” Armstrong said in court. “This is irreversible even with . Chance of improvement can’t now be delivered.”

Speaking in court on Monday, Yates said making the decision to “let him go” was the hardest thing she and her partner had done in their lives, and that they still believed his condition could have improved with treatment had it been administered earlier.

The family’s story has made headlines worldwide, with Pope Francis and President Donald Trump offering support to the grieving parents.

Chanel Scores Win in Legal Fight to Protect CC Monogram Mark

LOGO LOCK: Chanel on Tuesday scored a victory in its fight to protect its trademark double-C logo.
The European Union’s General Court invalidated a decision by the board of appeal of the European Union Intellectual Property Office, or EUIPO, in a case pitting the French luxury firm against Li Jing Zhou, a resident of Spain, and Golden Rose 999 Srl, a company established in Rome.
In 2010, Zhou registered a symbol consisting of two interlocking S shapes, which Chanel sought to have canceled on the grounds that it strongly resembled its monogram, which has been a registered trademark in France since 1989. The EUIPO’s board in 2014 rejected its request for a revocation.
But the Luxembourg-based General Court estimated that the two drawings had “remarkable similarities,” adding that Zhou’s design could be perceived as a creation inspired by the idea of the Chanel monogram, which could potentially create confusion in the minds of consumers.
The Luxembourg court annulled the EUIPO’s decision but rejected Chanel’s request to have the contested trademark declared invalid, saying this was not within the realm of its competencies. The EUIPO has been ordered to pay costs in the case.
Last month, Chanel won a multimillion-dollar trademark infringement lawsuit against more than two dozen

Justin Trudeau Challenges Matthew Perry To A Rematch Of Elementary School Fight

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau playfully challenged actor Matthew Perry to a fight over Twitter on Saturday, just weeks after Perry let the world know that he once beat Trudeau up at their elementary school in Canada.

During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” last month, Perry told the story, as extremely unlikely as it might seem.

“My friend Chris Murray, who was also in the fifth grade in Canada, reminded me that we actually beat up Justin Trudeau,” he said. “We both beat him up. I think he was excelling in a sport that we weren’t so it was pure jealousy.”

“I think he was the only kid in school that we could beat up,” he added. “You know, I’m not bragging about this, this is terrible. I was a stupid kid, I didn’t want to beat him up. In fact, I think at one point I tried to turn it into love play.”

Even though Perry expressed remorse, that wasn’t good enough for Trudeau, who in his challenge on Saturday ― which was April Fools’ Day ― correctly noted that Chandler, Perry’s character on “Friends,” has a very punchable face.

Guys, just one request: If this goes down, just make sure it’s streamable ― not some of that pay-per-view bull crap.

Father Stunned by Son’s Arrest in Murder of Queens Jogger: ‘He’s Never Had a Fight in His 20 years’

The father of Chanel Lewis, the 20-year-old man who was arrested this weekend for the August 2016 murder of Queens, New York, jogger Karina Vetrano, told reporters that he was “extremely surprised” by the charges.

According to the New York Post, Richard Lewis, a 70-year-old former school principal, called his son a good student and “a very humble kid” when he met with reporters on Sunday.

“Chanel would never have gone to do what they say he has done,” the father said. “He’s never had a fight in his 20 years.”

In fact, Richard said his son, who lived with his mother and siblings in East New York, was previously the victim of crimes. He said Chanel was hospitalized last year after being mugged and hit in the head with a piece of wood by three people. Chanel was later mugged again by the assailants.

The dad said he would tell Vetrano’s family, “I’m sorry to hear about , but I’m sure that would not be a part of that.”

Vetrano’s parents, Phil and Cathy Vetrano, expressed mixed feelings to reporters outside their home.

“I’m not going to say it is a good day but we can move forward now,” Phil said after praising police for their investigative work, according to the New York Daily News. “We know who did this.”

“The demon must get his justice,” Cathy said. “We will see to it.”

At an NYPD press conference on Sunday, police said that they do not believe that Lewis knew Vetrano prior to her disappearance. They said he had no prior criminal history aside from some summonses. According to police, Lewis gave a DNA swab to authorities after an interview on Feb. 2. His DNA allegedly matched with DNA found on Vetrano. He has been booked on murder and sexual assault charges, according to police. It is not known how he pleads against the charges or if he has retained an attorney.

On Sunday he was seen leaving a police station in handcuffs while reporters and bystanders shouted at him. In a video from AM New York, Lewis looked around while he was led to a cop car, appearing stunned and confused, as people could be heard yelling “why’d you kill her?”

After six-month long search, the arrest took place Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn, New York, according to the New York Daily News.

Vetrano’s body was found in Spring Creek Park around 11 p.m. on Aug. 2, about a dozen feet from a jogging trail she used daily, according to police.

The 30-year-old was sexually assaulted and strangled after putting up a “ferocious fight,” investigators previously revealed. They further believe Vetrano bit her attacker, because her teeth showed signs of cracking and found DNA under her fingernails.

Diane Loses Everything In First Official Trailer For ‘The Good Fight’

The first official trailer for “The Good Fight” is here with a heavy dose of legal drama to fill the void left by its predecessor, “The Good Wife.”

The roughly two-minute spot follows Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) as she learns all her retirement savings have been lost as the result of a massive Ponzi scheme. Making matters worse, it seems her goddaughter Maia (Rose Leslie) might be connected to it.

If we know anything about Diane, though, it’s that she won’t go down without a fight. And based on the title of this show, that’s precisely what fans are going to get.

The 10-episode series will focus on Diane and Maia after they’ve been ousted from Lockhart & Lee and join forces with Lucca Quinn (”Good Wife” alum Cush Jumbo) at a new firm, according to Uproxx. Justin Bartha, Delroy Lindo and Erica Tazel are also part of the cast.

Since the series will air on the new CBS All Access digital platform, the writers were given a lot more freedom in terms of the dialogue — specifically in regard to cursing. By the looks of the uncensored trailer above, there will be plenty. (There’s also a censored version here.)

The series premieres on Feb. 19 and will only air on CBS All Access.

The first trailer for “The Good Wife” spinoff, “The Good Fight,” is finally here, and by the looks of it, Diane Lockhart and company are getting involved in all kinds of drama.

“Eventually everyone reveals themselves,” she adds, as dramatic music plays over a collection of clips.

The trailer also offers a glimpse at Cush Jumbo, who’s returning to play Lucca Quinn, and provides a look at new character Maia Sindell, played by Rose Leslie of “Game of Thrones” fame. Maia plays Diane’s goddaughter, a young lawyer whose reputation is ruined due to a massive financial scam, according to Entertainment Weekly.

All Couples Fight. Here’s How Successful Couples Do It Differently.

All couples argue, but it’s the way they argue that determines if their relationship will go the distance.

“Instead of attacking the other person’s character, happy couples color inside the lines and express their own feelings,” psychotherapist Vikki Stark, director of the Sedona Counselling Center of Montreal, told The Huffington Post. ”It’s fine to say, ‘I’m furious with you right now!’ It’s not fine to say, ‘You’re a sorry excuse for a human being.'”

What else stands out in happy couples’ approach to arguments? Below, Stark and other relationship experts share eight ways healthy couples argue differently.

1. They don’t run from fights.

Couples in it for the long-haul don’t shy away from discussing topics that could just as easily be swept under the rug. They ask the big, scary questions ASAP — “When, if ever, are we going to have kids?” “What are we going to do if you get that job in another state? I don’t want to move to there!” — so they don’t become bigger isssues in the relationship later on, said Diane Sawaya Cloutier, an author and relationship expert.

“When taboo or uncomfortable topics remain unaddressed, they can turn any benign event into a big drama that could have been avoided in the first place,” she said. “Couples who talk about it can manage potential dramas.”

2. They start slow and take turns talking.

Arguments generally end the same way they began, said Bonnie Ray Kennan, a marriage and family therapist based in Southern California. Couples who’ve mastered the art of arguing fairly take things slow, addressing difficult conversations with a soft, reassuring tone and dialing it down whenever things get too emotionally charged.

“Starting a difficult conversation softly and respectfully dramatically increases the chances of a good outcome,” she said. “Conversely, a ‘harsh start-up’ is very hard to process well, especially for men.”

Couples who argue with finesse also know the value of give and take: “One person speaks and the other person truly listens,” Ray Kennan said.

3. They don’t name call.

Happy couples in long-term relationships rarely get into knock-down, drag-out fights because they don’t lower themselves to school-yard tactics: no matter how heated things get, there’s no name calling, eye rolling or biting sarcasm.

“Both partners understand that contemptuous behaviors are hard to take back and have a corrosive impact on a relationship,” Ray Kennan said. “Over time, they’ve become mindful of the effects of such dirty fighting and so they take it out of their repertoire.”

4. They know how to cool down.

When things do get out of hand, savvy arguers know how to get a grip on their emotions. They value taking a time out, whether that means counting to 10 and taking slow, deep breaths or simply telling their spouse, “Hey, can we revisit this in the morning?”

“These couples know how to acknowledge and honor their emotions without getting overrun by them,” Amy Kipp, a couples and family therapist in San Antonio, told HuffPost. ”They use self-soothing skills to make sure they’re at their best. When both partners are able to soothe themselves and take breaks, they’re usually able to reach a resolution (or agree to disagree!) with more ease.”

5. They set ground rules for arguments.

It’s not that long-time couples have never resorted to low blows or have said something regrettable during an argument. They have in the past — and then they learned from the mistake. Once the emotionally charged fight ends, smart couples lay down some ground rules for arguing so it never gets out of hand again, said author and relationship expert Mario P. Cloutier.

The ground rules could be specific — ”We will not interrupt each other when one is giving his or her perspective” — or more big picture: “It’s not about being right. It’s about getting to a common ground and resolving the problem,” suggested Cloutier.

6. They acknowledge each other’s feelings and points of view.

They may be bumping heads but couples in happy, long-time relationships try their best to see the other side of the argument, Kipp said.

“They may say, ‘I know you see it differently than me, but I appreciate that you are listening to my perspective,'” she said. “These positive moments decrease defensiveness and allow for a more productive conversation.”

7. They give each other the benefit of the doubt.

Partners who are able to have healthy and productive arguments don’t jump to conclusions in the middle of fights. They aren’t quick to assume their S.O. wants to jump ship and leave them just because he or she is a voicing a concern. They quiet their insecurities, listen and try to give their partner the benefit of the doubt, Kipp said.

“Healthy relationships mean that people assume their partner is doing the best they can at the moment,” she explained. “In an argument, this means assuming both partners have the same goal: a mutually beneficial resolution. This allows arguments to be a team effort to achieve the goal rather than an adversarial ‘fight.'”

8. They never forget that ultimately, they’re a team.

Even during their most tense arguments, healthy couples never forget that they’re a team: for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health…  and until the argument exhausts them and both parties agree that they’d rather call a timeout and get a bite to eat.

“Couples in satisfying long-term relationships are able to remember that, no matter how angry they may be, life will continue after today,” said Stark. “Because of that, they don’t want to do lasting damage. Even in an emotional state, they are able to hang on to the long-term value of the couple. They’re a team, protecting their future together.”

Why Planes Crash: An Accident Investigator’s Fight for Safe Skies (Unabridged)

Boarding an airplane strikes at least a small sense of fear into most people. Even though we all have heard that the odds of being struck by lightning are greater than the odds of perishing in a plane crash, it still doesn’t feel that way. Airplane crashes might be rare, but they do happen, and they’re usually fatal. David Soucie insists that most of these deaths could be prevented. He’s worked as a pilot, a mechanic, an FAA inspector, and an aviation executive. He’s seen death up close and personal – deaths of colleagues and friends that might have been prevented if he had approved certain safety measures in the aircrafts they were handling. His years of experience have led Dave to become an impassioned consultant on the topic of airline safety. This includes not only advising the Obama administration, but also taking a leading role in the congressionally funded NextGen interdepartmental initiative in regards to both the department of transportation and the departments of defense, homeland security, FBI, CIA, and others. Find out the truth about airplane safety and discover what the future holds for air travel.

Why Couples Fight: The Top 5 Issues

I love to talk about love — even some of the darker parts of coupledom like arguments, fights and problems. After all, without the dark we wouldn’t have the light!

Most of us don’t realize that there are patterns to how we fight…and make-up if we so choose to work at it. Ask yourself:

Are you having the same fight over and over again?

Your arguments might be more common than you think. Can you relate to this awesome video?

The Science of Fighting

According to Marriage and Family counselor Dr. John Gottman, a true expert in this field, 69 percent of marriage conflicts are never solved. Yes, 69 percent!

That means that we are often having the same fight over and over again.

This is actually good news. Why? If we have similarities or patterns to our fights it means a) we are not alone and b) we can study, predict and course-correct our arguments before they explode.

Dr. John Gottman has over 40 years of research with over 3,000 married couples. He calls these unresolved issues ‘gridlocked’. Watch this video for more:

Gridlocked Issue: A common topic that comes up for a couple that cannot be resolved and typically devolves into a nasty argument.

The Top 5 Issues Couples Fight About:

What do most couples fight about? Here are the 5 most common issues:

  • Free Time

  • Money

  • Housework

  • Physical Intimacy

  • Extended Family

Fighting Solutions:

Here are some ways you can use the science of couples to help your relationship:

1. The New Mindset

How to Fight Better: I want us to shift the focus to fighting ‘better’ as opposed to fighting less. Why? Fighting better is about having discussions, not arguments. It is about respectfully hearing the other person when perpetual problems come up. It’s also a lot of pressure to try to fight less. We all want to fight less, but the point of this article is to deepen understanding and that can mean discussing more.

2. Identify Your Issues

One of the most interesting discussions I have ever had with my husband was identifying our ‘perpetual issues’. We sat down and thought about the problems and topics that have come up recently and looked for patterns. Did any of them fall into the top 5 above? Were there any common threads or underlying themes to our arguments. The answer — yes. We didn’t realize it at first, but we were basically having the same 3 arguments over and over again with different dressing.

  • Sit down with your partner (or with a journal by yourself) and review all of the arguments you have had recently or any big blow-up fights over the last few months. Try to identify the patterns under the arguments.

  • Once you have identified your patterns, clearly delineate each partner’s side of the argument. Do this in non-judgmental terms. For example, an issue could be ‘spending.’ Husband likes to treat himself to little dinners out regularly, whereas Wife likes to save up for big treats. Neither is ‘wrong’ but this way you know where you both stand.

3. Localize Don’t Globalize

One reason that little arguments can erupt so quickly is because a small disagreement can be tagged onto one of your larger arguments and immediately explode into the big fight. You already know your issues and where the other stands, so it is very important to keep small arguments compartmentalized and specific to the situation. This can help you focus on the issue and keep the discussion as just that — a discussion. Since you know you have fundamental differences on the larger argument, there is no reason to bring it into everyday discussions.

  • Try to avoid globalizing the other person or their behavior. Try not to say “You always do this” or “This is your pattern” or “You never…”

  • Don’t call up past arguments or offenses. I know it’s hard, but it will only exacerbate an issue that is gridlocked (devolving into a larger fight).

And by the way, you aren’t the only couple who fights about your issues:

4. Start with Agreement

If a gridlocked issue comes up on a daily basis and you need to approach it, start with agreement. Dr. Gottman noticed that successful couples who have been together for a long time master gentleness. They present issues in a soft way by never starting with criticism. In fact, starting with agreement is the best way to avoid an argument and start a discussion. Find something you can agree upon and start there.

  • For example, if you have family coming in for the weekend and Wife wants a hotel, but Husband wants house-guests, Wife could say, “I know we can agree that family time is important and I know we can both get a little annoyed when we are overrun with nieces and nephews. Let’s try to think of a way to make this weekend work.”

5. Look Underneath the Argument

This is the hardest one, but the most important. Sometimes there are underlying issues beneath the gridlocked issue. I want you to think about what’s happening behind the argument. Are there value-based differences? You might actually be arguing about basic philosophical concepts like someone’s sense of self, power, freedom, care, what family means, what home means or control. Look at your gridlocked issue and ask the question “Why?” 5 times. *Be sure to get buy-in to do this from both people, so it is exploratory not antagonistic. For example:

  • Wife: I am very upset right now.

  • Man: Why?

  • Wife: I need more help around the house.

  • Man: Why do you feel that way?

  • Wife: I feel overworked and overwhelmed with the stuff that needs to be done.

  • Man: Why do you feel overwhelmed?

  • Wife: It just feels like it all lands on me at the end of the day.

  • Man: Why do you feel it all lands on you?

  • Wife: I don’t see you offering to help and that makes me frustrated.

  • Man: Why does that happen?

  • Wife: It makes me feel under-appreciated.

Ok, now they are onto something! Yes, help around the house is great, but it all boils down to feeling under appreciated. If the husband were to make the wife feel more appreciated — perhaps thanking her for what has already been done, that might be even more beneficial than helping. Combining help and gratitude could be the ultimate healer in this fight.

6. Acceptance

Knowing your issues and where you stand can help prevent you from having the argument over and over again. Agreeing to disagree and naming the issue can prevent arguments in the future. For example, I was walking a couple through this exercise and this process happened:

  • Common Issue: Vacationing with the in-laws. Husband doesn’t like to vacation with his in-laws, Wife does.

  • Localize: Trip to Hawaii over Thanksgiving

  • Agreement: We both know we need a vacation and we are due for an in-law visit.

  • Why’s: Wife learns that the reason Husband doesn’t like to vacation with the in-laws has nothing to do with them. He loves the in-laws! But he wants more couple time. “We are so busy during the work week that our vacations are the only alone time we get together.”

  • Acceptance: This is a difference in preference — it is not an attack on the in-laws or a desire not to vacation together. A possible compromise to recognize the underlying need for alone time could be to go on vacation a few days early before the in-laws arrive.

  • Success!

You want your perpetual issues to be more like the crazy uncle who shows up unannounced and less like the hidden rabid dog in the closet. In other words, the more your issue is talked about, tolerated and discussed, the easier and less trap-filled it will be.

Sometimes it feels like talking about the nitty-gritty side of romance is taboo, but I think when we explore the issues we learn and benefit. Let’s bring the light to the dark.

Kittens Make Epic Fight Scene From ‘The Lion King’ So Much Better

Question: How do you improve on an epic scene from a classic Disney movie?

Answer: Swap out the animated characters for live kittens. Keep all the action the same, just with kittens.

Here’s an example, using the climactic fight scene from “The Lion King.”

Grown-up Simba? Bam! He’s a kitten now. Scar? DONE. Kitten-ized.

We can’t imagine how long it took for YouTuber Pasdidée to wrestle his actors into line, but it’s truly a work of art.

It is not, however, the only time someone recreated “The Lion King” with kittens.

French Parliament Passes Draft Law To Curb Public Health Cost And Fight Unhealthy Stereotypes

PARIS (AP) — Too-thin models, too much drinking, sexy cigarette packs: France’s parliament is cracking down on all of these in a sweeping bill designed to improve public health and trim public health costs — while tackling unhealthy stereotypes along the way.

The National Assembly, parliament’s lower house, voted 311-241 on Tuesday to approve the draft law. It now goes to the Senate before a final vote back in the assembly. The Socialist-led government hopes the bill will take effect by the summer.

Health Minister Marisol Touraine, the bill’s champion, said it is “crucial to tackle the challenge of aging and the emergence of new diseases” while preserving France’s generous and highly vaunted health care system.

Here’s a look at some of the key reforms:

ANOREXIC MODELS

In a measure that could cause ripples in France’s famed fashion industry, the bill would make it a crime to use anorexic models or encourage anorexia.

It would forbid anyone with a body mass index, or BMI, below a certain level from earning money as a model. The exact level — based on height and weight — would be defined later by decree if the bill becomes law.

Any modeling agency or individual who pays a model with a BMI below the designated level would face up to six months in prison and 75,000 euros ($ 80,000) in fines if convicted.

Some 40,000 people are estimated to have anorexia in France — 90 percent of them women, according to the Health Ministry.

PLAIN CIGARETTE PACKS

The government’s plan includes a measure that would require manufacturers to package cigarettes in plain containers by May 2016. Packs would have the same shape, size, color and typeset. Brands would still be mentioned, but would be restricted to a small discreet place on the packaging.

The government believes less attractive packaging would help discourage young people from starting to smoke. Around 30 percent of French people smoke — a habit linked to some 73,000 deaths a year in France, according to official statistics.

UNDERAGE DRINKING

People who encourage minors to drink excessively could face a year behind bars and a $ 16,000 (15,000 euro) fine.

The sale to minors of products inciting people to get drunk, such as T-shirts, would be forbidden.

Touraine, the health minister, has cautioned against the ills of binge-drinking, and has used the English-language term to describe the act of excessive imbibing over a short period of time.

As many as 49,000 people die every year in France from the consequences of drinking alcohol, according to a 2013 study published in the European Journal of Public Health.

Other measures, including requiring the labeling of alcohol-related risks in advertising, were scrapped during the Assembly debate, under pressure from the conservative opposition and France’s influential wine lobby.

CHILD OBESITY

In a step that would require changes to the business model of some fast-food chains, the bill would ban free-refill soda fountains in restaurants in a move aimed at combatting obesity.

Touraine, speaking in parliament, noted that the free-refill policy was “common in other countries, … is spreading in our country and could be attractive to young people.”

SUN-BED BAN FOR MINORS

Amid concerns about skin cancer, the bill would bar tanning salons from selling sun-bed services to customers under 18 years old or to engage in advertising targeting minors.

FACILITIES FOR DRUG USERS

The bill would allow for a six-year test period in which intravenous drug users would be given access to clean needles under medical supervision and in the presence of drug counselors.

The conservative opposition — which controls the Senate — has criticized the measure as a “very bad signal” to French youth, saying it trivializes the use of drugs.

Under France’s legislative system, the National Assembly has final say in the passage of laws — so even if the Senate alters or rejects the bill, it could become law.

Protesters Continue to Fight Dolce & Gabbana

D&G STILL UNDER FIRE: The organizers of Thursday’s protest outside of Dolce & Gabbana’s Old Bond Street store in London are rallying more troops to try to pressure Macy’s and Debenhams into dropping the brand. As of Friday afternoon, nearly 17,000 people had signed an online petition to that effect, in response to Domenico Dolce’s and Stefano Gabbana’s recent controversial comments about in vitro fertilization that prompted Elton to call for a boycott of the brand.

Edwin Sesange, director of the LGBT Out and Proud Diamond Group, and Peter Tatchell, director of his own human rights advocacy foundation, penned the Care2 petition. At this point, no further protests are planned, according to a spokesman for the group.

Macy’s and Debenhams had not responded to requests for comment Friday afternoon.

Justin Bieber And Orlando Bloom Maybe, Possibly Just Had The Lamest Fight Ever

You know those fights in baseball where everyone rushes out onto the field and then just sorta gives each other dirty looks for a little while?

Well, here’s one that might be even lamer — the supposed fight between Orlando Bloom and Justin Bieber that went viral Tuesday night.

TMZ, which posted the video, says the “what’s up bitch” you can (barely) hear at the beginning of the clip is Bieber yelling at Bloom, but that’s about as exciting as it gets. Most of the footage shows guys standing around, with a little finger-pointing for good measure.

The incident took place outside Cipriani restaurant in Ibiza, Spain. The joint was packed with celebs such as Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Diddy, according to the New York Daily News.

Justin was at one table, and Orlando was at another,” Page Six quoted a source as saying. “But when Bieber and his party were later walking past Bloom’s table, Orlando refused to shake Bieber’s hand.”

After that, “Bieber said something rude to Orlando, like, ‘She was good,’” the source was quoted as saying.

The “she” was ostensibly Bloom’s ex-wife, Miranda Kerr, who is reportedly friendly with The Biebs.

Another source told Page Six that Bieber didn’t make the comment and didn’t even know Bloom was there.

Eventually, the dispute made its way outside. Both TMZ and Page Six report that Bloom took a swing at Bieber, although that’s not seen in the clip. Bieber either ducked, or the punch missed, or it connected — all depending on which version of events you choose to believe.

In addition to Bieber’s reported friendship with Kerr, Bloom has been seen with the singer’s on-again, off-again girlfriend, Selena Gomez.

After the incident, Bieber sent out this tweet:

Amazon, Warner Bros. Fight Results In Delays Of Pre-Orders For Some Movies

Everything is NOT awesome between Amazon and Warner Bros. The online retailer has pulled all pre-orders for next week’s DVD and Blu-Ray releases of “The Lego Movie.”

The New York Times reports that Amazon and Warner are locked in a contract battle that’s also seen pre-order delays for other upcoming Warner films, including “300: Rise of an Empire,” “Winter’s Tale” and “Transcendence.”

An Amazon spokesperson reached by the Times would not comment on the business dispute, and Warner Bros. spokesman Jim Noonan told Reuters that his company’s “policy is to not comment on contract points or any proprietary issues involving our partners.”

Fans of Warner Bros. movies aren’t the only ones affected by the dispute.

VizMedia, which produces Japanese animated DVDs such as the “Bleach” and “Naruto” series that are distributed by Warner Bros., has noticed customers posting complaints on Facebook about their inability to pre-order upcoming titles from Amazon.

“Our products are distributed by Warner Brothers, and currently they’re in contract negotiations with Amazon. Pre-orders are disabled while that goes on, but we’re hoping it will be resolved soon,” VizMedia stated on May 29.

Other movie fans have taken to Amazon’s forums to vent.

“I guess I can thank Amazon for steering me back towards brick and mortar stores,” a user named John A. wrote while complaining about the inability to pre-order “The Lego Movie.”

Amazon is also currently fighting with the Hachette publishing company, pulling pre-orders for some books and delaying shipments for others. At one point, Amazon suggested that customers who want those titles shop elsewhere.

Although that dispute remains unresolved, Amazon began restocking some Hachette titles last week.

“Lego Movie,” “300: Rise of an Empire” and “Winter’s Tale” were released online ahead of the DVD and Blu-Ray, and as of this writing, the streaming versions remain available via Amazon Instant Video.

Fight Back Against Drone Surveillance… With Fashion

The drones are coming to steal your privacy, but now there’s a fashionable way to tell them to butt out. Join the Stealth War Wear.

Stealth Wear, which was created by Adam Harvey, was designed to “protect the wearer from drone surveillance.” While it seems like privacy has become a privilege, it can now also be quite fashionable –Harvey has designed a scarf and hoodie that are “anti-drone,” limiting the thermal- imaging technology drones use to acquire information. Harvey spoke to Wired about what prompted him to create the collection of outerwear:

“Total surveillance is a term I first heard from Anders Sandberg during this presentation at a Tabula Rasa conference… He predicts that by 2050 a country can execute total surveillance on a population for .01% of their GDP.”

newmuseum

While we’re not quite sure when the drones will take over the skies, we do know that Stealth Wear will hit stores soon, although the clothing won’t come cheap. We have a feeling that their fashion show won’t be anything like Fendi’s, where drones were used to record their autumn/winter 2014 collection in Milan.

But while this mix of drone and fashion may seem out of this world, smart accessories (which are a little less scary) may be the next big “thing.” The Sesame Ring, NFC ring, the Shine and MEMI bracelet are the latest innovations that think for us, but they still can’t block drones — we’ll have to stick to our trusty Stealth Wear scarf and hoodie for that.

New Survey Sheds Light On What Married Couples Fight About Most

It is said that money is the root of all evil, so it’s no surprise that married couples fight over money more than any other subject, according to a new survey.

Money Magazine polled 1,010 married adults ages 25 and over with household incomes above $ 50,000 to find out how couples manage their finances once they’ve tied the knot.

Survey results showed that 70 percent of couples argued about money more than household chores, togetherness, sex, snoring and what’s for dinner.

So what exactly are those financial fights all about?

Couples cited frivolous purchases, household budgeting and credit card debt as the biggest sources of friction.

The survey also revealed that husbands are happiest when their wives earn the same amount or more money than they do. Men with high-earning wives also reported hotter sex lives.

Now for the not-so-fun facts: 60 percent of husbands and wives said they check their bank accounts more than they have sex and 22 percent said they hide purchases from their spouses.

Standard Hotel Fires Employee Who Leaked Solange And Jay Z Fight Video

NEW YORK (AP) — A hotel where someone recorded security video appearing to show Beyonce’s sister, Solange Knowles, attacking Jay Z inside an elevator said Wednesday it had identified and fired the person.

The Standard Hotel said the person had been terminated for “breaching the security polices of the hotel and recording the confidential CCTV video.” Celebrity website TMZ posted the 3-minute video on Monday and said it was shot last week inside a Standard Hotel elevator.

The video appears to show Solange attacking Jay Z in Beyonce’s presence. A security guard intervenes. The footage shows the performers in the outfits they wore to the Met Gala last week. There is no audio.

The hotel said after the video was first aired that it was “shocked and disappointed” by the security breach. It said Wednesday that it will turn over “all available information to criminal authorities.”

Representatives for Jay Z, Beyonce and Solange haven’t commented on the video and didn’t reply to emails sent Wednesday seeking comment.

Jay Z and Beyonce, who were married in 2008, will kick off their co-headlining “On the Run Tour” on June 25 in Miami.

Solange recently performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, where Beyonce joined her onstage.

Virginia AG Mark Herring To Fight Same-Sex Marriage Ban, Reports Suggest

Virginia’s new attorney general Mark Herring is making a major reversal on his state’s same-sex marriage stance, according to The Washington Post and NPR.

Herring will announce on Thursday that he finds Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban to be unconstitutional, The Washington Post reported.

The move would be going against the position of Herring’s predecessor Ken Cuccinelli (R), who once stated, “I cannot support something that I believe brings nothing but self-destruction, not only physically but of their soul.”

As the Post points out, Herring, a Democrat, will also be reversing his own stance from eight years ago, when he voted against same-sex marriage.

“As attorney general, I cannot and will not defend laws that violate Virginians’ rights,” Herring told “Morning Edition.”

After a review of a case challenging the state’s same-sex marriage ban, Herring concluded, “The commonwealth will be siding with the plaintiffs in this case and with every other Virginia couple whose right to marry is being denied.”

Texas, Ohio Fight Over Air Force One Where Lyndon B. Johnson Took Oath Of Office

By Jon Herskovitz

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan 15 (Reuters) – The foundation that backs the library for President Lyndon Baines Johnson is locking horns with the Air Force museum in Ohio over an Air Force One jet that Johnson admirers believe belongs in Texas.

The LBJ Foundation is seeking to have the modified Boeing 707 that came into service under President John F. Kennedy and in which Johnson took the oath of the presidency hours after Kennedy’s assassination, transported to Austin and put on display near the LBJ Presidential Library.

“It would mean so much and it would become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Texas,” said Tom Johnson, chairman emeritus of the LBJ Foundation.

Even though the plane served as the primary presidential jet from 1962 to 1972 – from Kennedy through Richard Nixon – the foundation believes it is inextricably linked to the Johnson presidency.

Along with the move and display at the LBJ library on the University of Texas campus, the foundation also wants to restore the interior of the plane, also known as Special Air Mission (SAM) 26000, to better reflect the state it was in when it was used as the primary presidential plane.

There is a separate Air Force One plane on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library in California, which is on loan from the U.S. Air Force.

The LBJ Foundation, which has identified sources of funding for the move, display and interior restoration, is hoping the Air Force will lend out this plane in a similar fashion.

“They have many, many spectacular planes at Dayton. We just want one of them,” said Johnson, who is not related to the 36th U.S. President.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, said the plane is staying in Ohio.

“The museum is not considering a donation or loan of SAM 26000 to the LBJ Library & Museum or to any other entity,” museum spokesman Rob Bardua said in an email.

The plane was used by U.S. presidents through 1992. The museum sees the plane that carried presidents, heads of state and other dignitaries as an important historic aircraft.

“It was built to indicate American air superiority to the world and was not uniquely identified to one president,” Bardua said.

The plane flew Nixon to China and the Soviet Union for historic meetings at the height of the Cold War. It was also used by former Secretary of State James Baker for talks with Iraqi leaders about removing their troops from Kuwait ahead of the 1991 Gulf War.

The plane is painted to reflect its exterior in 1963 and the interior is configured for its use in 1998, when it was delivered to the museum. (Reporting by Jon Herskovitz, editing by Scott Malone and Gunna Dickson)

Unbelievable YouTube Comment Fight Gets Glorious Reenactment (NSFW VIDEO)

YouTube comments may have hit a new low with the exchange that inspired this latest “Reconstruction” by Dead Parrot.

On a video about the death of Nelson Mandela, one ill-informed mourner sparked the ire of another commenter who actually knew who Nelson Mandela was… and that he didn’t appear in any of the “Almighty” movies.

Their exchange is jaw-dropping enough, but reenacted by Grahame Edwards and Eryl Lloyd Parry, it becomes otherworldly in the best possible way.

As far as we’re concerned, this is the only reason YouTube comments still exist.
