Moods of Norway Files for Bankruptcy

Moods of Norway, the brightly colored European fashion brand, has filed for bankruptcy.
“It’s incomprehensibly sad that the adventure is now over,” Moods of Norway founder Simen Staalnacke told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) after he revealed the bankruptcy filing to employees. “We have really tried to make this work. I feel like words aren’t enough in such an extreme situation.”
The brand, which started in men’s wear but moved into women’s, hasn’t done well in the past few years; earlier this week its lead bank, Sparebanken Sogn og Fjordane, stopped further credit, and Moods of Norway hasn’t been able to raise new capital. Last year Varner, a Norwegian apparel chain, bought 25 percent of the company, but that infusion of cash couldn’t turn things around.
For the past few years, Moods of Norway, which was started in 2002, has been in expansion mode, which ultimately led to its profitability challenges.
In 2012, the company hired George Santacroce, an industry veteran whose prior stints included Bergdorf Goodman and Aquascutum of London, to build up the U.S. business. Shortly after that, it tapped Keanan Duffty as a design consultant. At its height Moods of Norway operated 15 stores worldwide. For now, the stores are still open.

Sia Files for Divorce from Husband Erik Anders Lang: Report

Sia‘s split is moving forward.

After announcing her separation from husband Erik Anders Lang earlier this month, the Grammy-nominated singer filed for divorce on Friday in Los Angeles, TMZ reports.

Citing irreconcilable differences, the couple’s marriage is ending after two years.

“After much soul searching and consideration we have made the decision to separate as a couple,” the pair previously told PEOPLE in a statement through her rep. “We are, however, dedicated to remaining friends. There will be no further comment.”

The couple married at Sia’s Palm Springs, California home in August 2014, two months after Lang revealed their engagement on Instagram in June 2014.

Run-DMC Files $50 Million Lawsuit Against Amazon and Wal-Mart for Trademark Infringement

Attorneys for the Run-D.M.C. brand have filed a $ 50 million lawsuit against Amazon Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Co., Jet.com and a few other outlets for trademark infringement and trademark dilution, among other things.
First reported by TMZ Thursday, the legal filing was made in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
The complaint, which includes numerous images of Run-D.M.C.-inspired products as they appeared on Amazon’s and Wal-Mart’s respective sites, alleges that the retailers are advertising, selling, manufacturing, promoting and distributing multiple Run-D.M.C. styled products. Eyewear, hats, T-shirts, wallets and patches are among the items referenced, some of which are said to use the Run-D.M.C. trademark. The complaint charges that the products being sold “confuse the public and suggest that Run-D.M.C. endorses the products.”
Homegrown in Hollis, Queens by Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels and Jason Mizell, Run-D.M.C. helped define hip hop culture in the Eighties. Mizell, better known as “Jam Master Jay,” was shot and killed in his recording studio in Queens in 2002. Simmons, whose brother is the serial entrepreneur Russell, is widely recognized as “Reverend Run.”
Run-D.M.C. has a registered trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The lawsuit claims that the Run-D.M.C. brand has produced revenue in excess

Perrin Paris Files Lawsuit Against Philipp Plein

IN THE CLUTCH: Leather-goods maker Perrin Paris has filed a lawsuit against luxury sportswear firm Philipp Plein, requesting an injunction and significant damages for infringing its so-called “glove-clutch,” a design-patented model that the French firm describes as a marriage between its glove-making heritage and modern chic. The suit is pending at a court in Hamburg, Germany, Perrin Paris said.
Perrin Paris alleges that the Lugano, Switzerland-based firm known for its bejeweled leather and crystal-studded knits copied its Eiffel model glove-clutch. “It’s the exact duplicate, same size, same design, same concept — the hand receiving portion of our bags that we design-patented. They only added a skull,” said Michel Perrin, whose great-great grandmother founded the company in Saint-Junien with gloves as its core business.
Julie Macklowe carried the Philipp Plein clutch on the red carpet at the Met Gala in May.
“In the beginning, we contacted Philipp Plein out of court asking him to stop selling it. We were given the impression that they would remove it from distribution. But recently, we realized that they were continuing to sell them in their outlet stores, at a discounted price,” Perrin explained.
Before the defense was due in court, he said, the German firm contacted Perrin Paris asking for a settlement offer, which

Soccer Player Punished For Giving Middle Finger Files Lawsuit Against UConn

Noriana Radwan was an 18-year-old freshman soccer player at the University of Connecticut when her team won the 2014 American Athletic Conference championship game.

An ESPNU television camera focused on Radwan as she cheered and hugged her teammates on the field, and she enthusiastically threw up her left middle finger. She never imagined this one gesture ― for which she says she has since “profusely apologized” ― would destroy her career as a UConnn student-athlete.

A few weeks after the incident, then-head coach Len Tsantiris called Radwan to let her know her scholarship would be terminated mid-year for what he called a “serious misconduct issue.”

Nearly two years after that phone call, Radwan is still fighting back.

She announced at a press conference on Monday that she’s filing a lawsuit against UConn and three people associated with the decision to end her scholarship: Tsantiris, the university’s former athletic director and the director of student financial aid.

Radwan’s layer, Greg Tarone, said UConn and the involved individuals violated his client’s First Amendment rights and the NCAA Division I bylaws.

Radwan is asking the school for financial retribution, The Associated Press reports

“I loved UConn, but I lost faith in it as an institution when it allowed my scholarship to be illegally taken away so abruptly and crassly in the middle of the school year,” Radwan said. “Nobody should have to go through what I have gone through in the past two years. Only litigation will stop it.”

Watch the press conference below:

Tarone called UConn’s termination of Radwan’s scholarship “atrocious,” and said he believes sexism played a role in the university’s decision.

“We’re here because she’s a female student-athlete who was treated differently than male student-athletes at UConn by the institution,” Tarone said. “One misguided individual, Coach Tsantiris, led the way for a couple of others to complicity violate her civil rights.”

He cited several recent incidents involving male UConn student-athletes who received little to no disciplinary action from the university despite having been accused of more “serious misconduct” than Radwan.

For example, a freshman football player named Brian Cespedes was charged last week with misdemeanor assault and breach of peace for his involvement in an off-campus fight in September. UConn spokesman Kyle Muncy told the New Haven Register that the coaching staff was “made aware of the incident and addressed it,” but that Cespedes had not been kicked off the team.

Tarone said he also believes Tsantiris was motivated to remove Radwan from his team to free up scholarship money and make room for then-Notre Dame mid-fielder Morgan Andrews. (Andrews ended up choosing to play at the University of Southern California.)

Tarone said a section of the NCAA bylaws does permit a school to cancel a scholarship mid-year for “serious misconduct,” but that this type of misconduct is undefined.

“A common sense applied to the word ‘serious’ means misconduct that would that would significantly worry or cause injury to somebody,” Tarone said. “Noriana’s [gesture] could not possibly be characterized in the same realm of unacceptable conduct by a student-athlete on any campus in this country ― none.”

Radwan, who is currently playing for Hofstra University after receiving a partial athletic scholarship, said the psychological and emotional agony of being kicked off UConn’s team had been “overwhelming.”

“Please understand that I did not intend to offend anyone,” Radwan said. “I was making a celebratory statement that was seriously misinterpreted and misjudged.”

UConn spokeswoman Stephanie Reitz told the AP that the school had not seen the lawsuit and wasn’t able to comment on it because of federal privacy laws.

“In an excited moment, as an 18-year-old after winning her first championship, her one little mistake cost her everything,” Tarone said. “Loyalists to the UConn Huskies brand should ask themselves if they want this to happen to their daughter.”

Martin Greenfield Files Lawsuit Against Brooks Brothers

There’s a bespoke battle brewing.
Martin Greenfield Clothiers Ltd. has filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit against Brooks Brothers, charging that the retailer broke its manufacturing agreement with the Brooklyn-based tailor for its Golden Fleece made-to-measure collection.
According to a suit filed in the Supreme Court of the State of New York in Kings County on Monday, Brooks Brothers unilaterally terminated its exclusive manufacturing agreement with Martin Greenfield on Nov. 1, 2014, “without adhering to the one-year notice of termination stipulated in the agreement.”
As a result, the lawsuit alleges, Greenfield sustained significant loss of revenue and other costs, “such as inability to notify its union labor force of the changed circumstances and reduce its manufacturing capability, as well as seek other work to meet its expenses.”
The suit is seeking $ 1.9 million in compensatory damages, lost revenue and other damages, according to Mark E. Seitelman, Greenfield’s attorney.
In response to a request for comment, Brooks Brothers said: “We do not comment on legal matters.”
According to Seitelman, after Brooks Brothers purchased the Southwick manufacturing facility in Massachusetts in 2007, it made clear that it eventually intended to bring the manufacturing in-house. However, the plant was not ready and so Brooks Brothers continued to work with Greenfield on

The Pro Files: How Jo Malone Reinvented Herself After Leaving (then Coming Back) to Fragrance

Lime Basil & Mandarin. Pomegranate Noir. Mimosa & Cardamom. These fragrances, among countless others, have become cult favorites among loyal Jo Malone London lovers, otherwise known as self-proclaimed “Maloniacs.” But while women have hoarded everything from candles to cologne from the brand since 1994, few know the story of its namesake.

Though the fragrance maverick sold Jo Malone London to Estée Lauder in 2006 and walked away from the fragrance world, Malone recently came back to the industry that changed her life, after having a life-changing experience of another kind. After receiving a prognosis of having just a few months to live with breast cancer and beating it, the entrepreneur announced her new venture, Jo Loves in 2011.

RELATED PHOTOS: UPDATED! The Coziest Candles to Give – or Get – This Winter

With her new line of fragrances, Malone admits she’s “more aggressive, courageous, ballsy and bolder in the way approaches the creation” of products, although the core of what she does remains the same. “You do it differently because you’ve evolved,” she told PeopleStyle. “That’s exactly why I love both of those brands in a very different way. They were in different parts of my life, but I am not the same girl I was 20 years ago.”

The perfumer gives the unvarnished truth about her career, from starting Jo Malone London at her kitchen table to her initial regrets about leaving her first brand, in her just-released memoir, Jo Malone: My Story.

“I didn’t skirt over the cracks in this book,” she said. “That’s what makes it so inspirational. I think people identify with that, like ‘If she went through it and I am going through it, I can come out on the other end.’”

In honor of her book hitting shelves this week, we sat down with Malone to learn how she went from dropout to creator of an empire, and the bumps along the way.

When did you realize you had such a keen awareness of fragrance?

My mom worked for a woman called Madame Lubatti, a facialist. As a little girl I would spend time in the apartment in the laboratory where they make all the skincare. That’s where I first fell in love with fragrance. My sense of smell was so strong and powerful. I could tell the difference from rose oils – from the Bulgarian rose to tea rose to English rose – without reading the label, because I couldn’t read yet! I didn’t have to learn it or study it or think about it. It was very natural to me.

Do you remember the first fragrance you owned?

My father bought me my first bottle for Christmas. It was a very, very light French lemony cologne. I don’t remember the name, but I can still smell it today. It’s funny. This is the only fragrance I can’t recall 100 percent. But I actually made one many years ago called Verbenas of Provence , which is inspired by it. When you smell it, it smells like youth. Verbenas of Provence is the nearest thing I probably had for that first fragrance.

What inspires you to create new scents?

If I am happy or sad I create fragrance. So many signify moments in my life. Lime Basil & Mandarin from Jo Malone London was a turning point in my life where I went from running a skincare clinic to suddenly starting to become a very successful perfumer. Smoked Plum & Leather, which is a fragrance we just launched, is riding my horse in Montana up in the mountains when I really lost a sense of who I was and I felt really in touch with my creativity again.

When do you know when a fragrance is finished?

I just know. No one has ever asked me that question, and it’s such a great question. It’s like when a book is finished or when a piece of music is done. The creator knows that. I put a red dot on the bottom of the bottle and go, ‘That’s finished. No one touch it. It’s done.’ My team celebrates with a glass of wine and it’s a really magical moment.

How long does it take you to make a new product?

A fragrance can take me 10 years or one day. Creativity doesn’t have time on it. I won’t ever let someone from marketing … say I need to make something by the spring. It doesn’t work like that. I am going to create fragrances from my emotions and my integrity.

After leaving Jo Malone London in 2006, did you have any regrets?

I was so, so unhappy. But I walked away from that business. No one forced me. No one pushed me out the door. I walked out myself. How often in life do we do something and we know we’ve made a mistake but can’t turn back? I could spend the rest of my life regretting it, or get up and try again. So I tried again with Jo Loves.

Out of all the fragrances you’ve made, can you choose a favorite?

I have to do two. Lime Basil & Mandarin changed my life for Jo Malone London and Pomelo changed my life for Jo Loves, so I think it’s a bit like they’re my two kids. I can’t have one without the other. Without Lime Basil & Mandarin, I would have never created Pomelo. And without Pomelo I would never be able to move on.

Do you have a bunch of those two in your house at any given time?

We scent our house with Pomelo, so it’s a sign of home and safety to me. I only have one bottle of Lime Basil & Mandarin in my closet. Every now and then I just go in and smell it and take myself back to the moment and the memories. I still feel slightly sad when I smell it because it brings back all the memories.

As a fragrance expert, what advice can you give women to find their signature scent?

Test four or five fragrances from the same family – floral, woodsy or citrus – on a section of your arm. Mark where you sprayed each with one of those colored dot stickers you can get from Staples. Then you leave them on for about 20 minutes, go back and smell them again. But ultimately, fragrance is an art. Just like you will attune your eye to art, you have to attune your nose to fragrance.

What’s your favorite Jo Malone fragrance? Have you tried any of her new products from Jo Loves? Tell us below.

English actress Sarah Siddons (1755?1831) was an international celebrity widely acclaimed for her performances of tragic heroines. We know what Siddons looked like?an endless number of artists asked her to sit for portraits and sculptures?but what of her famous voice? In lively and engaging prose, Judith Pascoe journeys to discover how the celebrated romantic actor’s voice sounded and to understand its power to move audiences to a state of emotional collapse. The author’s quixotic endeavor leads her to enroll in a? Voice for Actors? class, to collect Lady Macbeth voice prints, and to listen more carefully to the soundscape of her own life. The Sarah Siddons Audio Files is the first full-scale attempt to address the importance of the voice in romantic culture. Bringing together archival discoveries, sound recording history, and media theory, the book shows how the romantic poets’ preoccupation with voices is linked to a larger cultural anxiety about the voice’s ephemerality. Podcast Review: Kumail Nanjiani’s The X-Files Files

Deconstructing episodes of TV’s The X-Files, cancelled over a decade ago, just got very meta with Episode 9 of Kumail Nanjiani’s The X-Files Files new series, because he brought in the first series alumnus.

2014-08-02-xfiles.jpgFellow comedian and actor Dean Haglund, most famous for playing long-haired, bespectacled Langley, a member of The X-Files conspiracy theorist trio The Lone Gunmen, sat in with Nanjiani for this episode. The reason being that they discussing/dissecting E.B.E., the first season episode featuring the debut of the Gunmen.

Nanjiani’s fanboy excitement is palpable at times as Haglund spins out tales from behind the scenes of the episode. And there are a few Easter eggs revealed that fans of the show never knew to look for before. Such as the style of Langley’s black hornrimmed glasses varied in the first few episodes because the prop master pulled them at random out of a bag of eyeglasses each time. And that the band The Ramones were such big fans of the show that they would time their appearances on stage during nights the show was on so they would be done in time to catch every episode.

This podcast is so focused on the subject matter of The X-Files that the two guys don’t even mention the fact that Haglund has been co-hosting his own podcast, the Chillpak Hollywood Hour, for over seven years. Maybe Dean should have Kumail on his show sometime to deconstruct HBO’s Silicon Valley.
