Toronto Film Review: ‘Kursk’

For many of us of an impressionable age and frame of mind in the year 2000, the Kursk submarine disaster occupies a uniquely chilling part of the imagination. Even far removed and only getting updates via news reports, the real-time experience of the excruciating 7-day delay between the explosions that sent the Russian nuclear submarine […]

What Did Naughty Dog Think of Fillion’s Uncharted Film?

Actor Nathan Fillion and director Allan Ungar appeared on IGN Live at Comic-Con 2018 on Thursday to promote their new Uncharted fan film, which has taken the internet by storm since it was posted online July 16.

One question fans have had about the film is what Uncharted game developer Naughty Dog would think of Ungar and Fillion’s unofficial movie treatment of their franchise.

According to Ungar, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive: “Amy Hennig, who I guess created the characters, she tweeted me. And she thought it was fantastic. It warmed her heart to see this 13 years later. Said ‘our baby,’ something like that.”

Scream Mega Fans Rent Out the House from the Film to Recreate the Iconic Final Party Screen

Scream lovers can have the scare of their life — at a price.

Die-hard fans Anthony Masi and Nate Ragon reportedly spent $ 22,000 to rent out the 5 bedrooms, 4 bathroom Santa Rosa, CA home from the horror movie Scream to recreate the final party scene for a Halloween celebration, according to TMZ.

But the duo plan doesn’t plan to keep the horror nostalgia to themselves, they are throwing a big spooky bash — just like the characters did in the film.

However, while many who attended the party in the 1996 film paid with their lives, this party will be a ticketed event named Scream Comes Home.

Taking place the weekend before Halloween, the party will allow guests to experience the movie in real life as Masi and Ragon plan to fill the house with scary surprises and memorabilia from the film.

“The movie, SCREAM, was filmed in Santa Rosa, California, and the last act of the movie was filmed in a single location… a large house in Tomales, a little town adjacent to Santa Rosa. This house was known as ‘Stu’s house’ in the script, and the screenplay referred to the length showdown ending as SCENE 118,” Masi and Ragon wrote on the event’s website.

When filmmakers finished filming it, they had T-shirts made up that said, ‘I survived Scene 118.’”

Tickets start at $ 200 for basic entry, but fans also had the option to purchase the overnight package for $ 1750, which sold out in just two days. And for those who really want to be scared, they can have the guy behind Ghost Face’s voice actually call their cell phones.

“Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Ghost Face gave YOU a call? Now you’ll be able to find out because voiceover artist Roger Jackson– the voice of Ghost Face in all four SCREAM films- has agreed to call fans and talk to them just like he does in the movies!” the site explained.

The original film — which spawned three sequels and an MTV television series — starred Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David ArquetteDrew Barrymore also had a cameo in the iconic movie.

Salma Hayek to Receive Franca Sozzani Award at Venice International Film Festival

IN THE NAME OF FRANCA: Salma Hayek will be the second recipient of the Franca Sozzani Award, which recognizes women who stand out for both their artistic careers and their social commitment.
The Mexican actress and movie producer will receive the award, established by late Vogue Italia editor in chief Franca Sozzani’s family, on Aug. 31 during the 75th edition of the Venice International Film Festival. The ceremony will take place at Sozzani’s favorite Belmond Hotel Cipriani, a five-star hotel on Venice’s Giudecca island.
“Her example and her teaching live on in a countless number of little everyday actions, which still punctuate life in the firm today,” said Fedele Usai, chief executive officer of Condé Nast Italia, which supports the Franca Sozzani Award. “This tribute to Franca is an opportunity to celebrate a person who was unique and unrepeatable, and who is a constant and challenging benchmark for all of us at Condé Nast.”

Chanel Sponsors Restoration of Sixties Film Featuring Costumes by Gabrielle Chanel

COSTUME PARTY: Chanel has sponsored the restoration of Alain Resnais’ 1961 masterpiece, “Last Year at Marienbad,” starring Delphine Seyrig in a series of dresses designed by Coco Chanel.
Poignantly, Studio Canal’s newly restored digitized version of the film will premiere as part of the classic film section at the Venice Film Festival where the original film was awarded a Golden Lion close to 60 years ago.

The process included cleaning up flaws and readjusting the color grading to highlight the photography and lighting developed by Sacha Vierny and Alain Resnais using a Dyaliscope lens. The soundtrack was also restored using the original 35-mm. mix.
Accessorized by pearls, the film’s costumes were based on “a wardrobe tethered to everyday life but that evoked the allure of 1920s cinema stars, as well as a modern and timeless elegance,” according to Chanel.

Vanessa Paradis, Johnny Depp’s Ex, Marries Film Director Samuel Benchetrit in France

Vanessa Paradis has a ring on it.

Johnny Depp’s former companion married film director Samuel Benchetrit in a discreet ceremony on Saturday afternoon.

This is the first marriage for the French singer and actress. Paradis and Depp’s two children — daughter Lily-Rose, 19, and son Jack, 16 — were also in attendance.

According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, the couple married in a small schoolhouse town hall in Saint-Simeon, a commune located one hour west of Paris in north-central France.

The bride, 45, carried a bouquet of pink roses while wearing a lacy cream-colored gown with an embroidered veil. Her hair was styled down, with flowers among her tresses.

The couple became engaged last November, a source tells PEOPLE, after they worked together on the film Chien, which screened this May at the Cannes Film Festival.

Approximately two dozen guests were invited to the ceremony, according to eyewitness reports.

Since the couple went public last fall, several locations were thought to have been on the short-list for the ceremony this summer.

Saint-Simeon, a tiny country village of less than 900, was selected for its discretion as well as the attachment Paradis has for the village. She has a country estate nearby, and until his death last year, her father owned a small restaurant in the quiet country commune.

Paradis is a superstar in France, where she began her career as a 14-year old child pop star following the international success of her single “Joe le Taxi.”

WATCH: Go Inside the Cannes Film Festival’s Most Exclusive Party Spot — the Hôtel du Cap

Want to vacation among Hollywood’s most glamorous? Just head to the Hôtel du Cap.

With the 2018 Cannes Film Festival getting under way, stars are gathering at what is often dubbed the most exclusive hotel on the French Riviera — its full name is the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc — to mingle and party throughout the nearly two-week long fest. And PEOPLE Deputy Editor J.D. Heyman is giving you an inside look.

“This has been a Hollywood hotel since the beginning of the 20th century,” explains Heyman.

RELATED: All About the Utah Resort Where Kourtney Kardashian and Younes Bendjima Celebrated His Birthday

The hotel is a hot spot during Cannes. Last year, everyone from Uma Thurman and Will Smith to Jessica Chastain and Tobey Maguire stepped out at the amfAR Gala, held at the hotel every year. And models including Emily Ratajkowski and Coco Rocha shared glam photos of themselves enjoying the iconic property on social media.

The previous year, on-again couple Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry all but confirmed their relationship with a cheeky Instagram post snapped on the hotel’s famous steps.

The property has also been a fixture in literature and a getaway spot for some of America’s most iconic luminaries.

Fitzgerald based the hotel in Tender is the Night ” says Heyman, adding that the Kennedy’s often chose the oceanfront hotel as a vacation destination. ” John F. Kennedy was here when he was 21 years old.” (The hotel is located just off the Boulevard John F. Kennedy.)

During the festival, the hotel serves as the site of numerous parties, including the amfAR benefit and the De Grisogono jewelry party.

And with Hollywood guests as hotel regulars, it’s no wonder rooms can cost at least $ 2,000 a night. In fact, up until 2006, Hôtel du Cap was a cash-only hotel, meaning guests had to either bring wads of bills in their suitcases or wire money to pay for their stay.

But the price is well worth the extravagant amenities and breathtaking views.

“It stretches over 20 acres here of pines and tropical gardens,” says Heyman. “The Hôtel du Cap is the jewel of the French Riviera.”

They Are Wearing: Sundance Film Festival 2018

Before the #OscarsSoWhite controversy a few years back put a spotlight on racial homogeneity in Hollywood, encouraging more diversity, the same could be said of the streets of Park City, Utah, a tony mountain resort tailored for skiing, snowboarding, hiking and mountain biking, depending on the season. The state is also the center of Mormon cultural influence.
As the movie industry has worked to make people of color more visible on screen, the effect could also be seen in the Sundance Film Festival’s entries as well as the industry types who descend on the festival to acquire titles, make deals and support the actors appearing in the films. (The indie showcase has always nurtured counter-culture and world cinema — with Oscar-caliber films like “Twelve Years a Slave,” “Birth of a Nation,” “Beasts of No Nation” and “Mudbound” premiering here.)
This year’s festival crowd, at least on the bustling blocks of Main Street in Old Town Park City, looked more like a melting pot, bringing with it more actual “street-style” fashions that went beyond tan shearling coats, black down jackets and furry boots. The floppy wide-brimmed hat has been supplanted by the knit beanie, and animal textures and patterns, whether real or man-made, abounded in

“It was time for me to take a new presentation direction with my collection,” said Ning. “The influencer has grown to huge importance with retailers and consumers. Patrick has a great eye and the past client experience I am looking for in shaping my brand to a more international retailer and consumer.”
Ning’s fall collection blends streetwear and tailoring with pieces that provide what he described as “a twisted dream state,” consisting of  unusual proportions and fabrics that range from flannel tartans to plaids.
Welde is part of the growing Parisian avant-garde scene and has worked with brands and publications including Balenciaga and Antidote Magazine.

Cannes Film Festival to Start a Day Earlier Next Year

SWITCHING DATES: The Cannes Film Festival will start a day earlier next year, a change that moves the awards ceremony to Saturday, rather than Sunday as in previous years, in a bid to increase the exposure of the event.
The festival will run for the same amount of time as before, and is now scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, through Saturday, May 19.
“The festival is beginning a new period in its history,” said Pierre Lescure, who runs the event. The new schedule is intended to “rebalance the two weeks of the event” as well as bring “new energy to the proceedings,” after celebrating the 70th anniversary last year, organizers of the film bonanza said in a statement.
“We intend to renew the principles of our organization as much as possible, while continuing to question the cinema of our age and to be present through its upheavals,” Lescure also said.
The Tuesday start also means an additional gala evening before the festival weekend.

Cara Delevingne Premieres Puma’s ‘#DoYou’ Campaign Film

PUMA AFTERNOON: Cara Delevingne talked about women’s empowerment and female issues as a part of Puma’s “#DoYou” campaign during an event held at Central Saint Martins in London on Sunday.
“I see, and I am more aware, of my own ignorance,” Delevingne said. “Of what people say and how spoiled we are in the West — and obviously myself included. Even the way I actually treat myself sometimes, and how much I put myself down and how much I made myself feel bad about myself.
“Now I am starting to understand women’s empowerment a lot more and how I want to lift other women up. But you can’t do that unless you lift yourself up. I’m still growing every day. It’s a constant reminder.”
The “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” actress, one of Puma’s faces, premiered a short film, part of a series linked to the campaign and meant to “highlight stories of female empowerment and change.”
Earlier this year, Delevingne traveled to Africa with the United Nations’ Girl Up foundation and met with refugees in Uganda and members of a female literary group where she participated in poetry sessions. She also took part in female self-defense lessons and spent time with young adults affected by bullying.

Charlize Theron Says She’s Enjoyed Gaining Weight for Film Roles: ‘Heaven Would Be Just Potato Chips’

When Charlize Theron has had to put on weight for a movie role, she’s tried to make the most of it.

The actress, 41, transformed her body for her Oscar-winning role in Monster, gaining weight to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos, and more recently, she reportedly put on 35 lbs. to play a mom with three kids in the new comedy-drama Tully, which filmed last year.

Theron opened up about the experience on Sirius XM’s Howard Stern Show on Wednesday.

“Every time I’ve had to do it, I have thoroughly enjoyed it,” she said. “Walking into a place with food and not having any restrictions. No thinking, “this is not good for me.’ It’s a f—– free for all. It’s amazing.”

Some of Theron’s foods of choice? “I love pasta and bread and potato chips. Heaven would be just potato chips for me,” she said.

Although the star has admitted that gaining weight for a role is more difficult now that she’s in her forties.

“It was brutal in every sense,” Theron told Variety of putting on weight for Tully. “This time around, I really felt it in my health. The sugar put me in a massive depression. I was sick. I couldn’t lose the weight. I called my doctor and I said, ‘I think I’m dying!’ And he’s like, ‘No, you’re 41. Calm down.’ ”

Now, Theron, whose new movie, Atomic Blonde is out July 21, is back to her healthy habits.

“ I’ll have a V8. I’ll have three V8s. I love me a V8. I love tomato juice,” she said during  her Howard Stern interview. “That’s also because I’m making two lunch boxes and trying to get two kids ready. I can’t … I can only do … I have to feed them!”

As for her new go-to beverage:  “I’m off coffee right now. I drink a lot of green tea,” Theron said. “I used to love coffee but now I’m into tea now.”

Sofia Coppola Becomes Second Woman To Win Cannes Film Festival’s Directing Prize

Ending a 56-year gap, Sofia Coppola became the second woman to receive the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival as the gala wrapped up on Sunday.

Russian Yuliya Solntseva won for “The Story of the Flaming Years” in 1961. Coppola was honored for “The Beguiled,” a Southern Gothic horror that updates the 1971 Civil War drama starring Clint Eastwood. Three of the director’s previous features ― “The Virgin Suicides,” “Marie Antoinette” and “The Bling Ring” ― also competed at Cannes.

“I was thrilled to get this movie made and it’s such an exciting start to be honored in Cannes,” Coppola said in a statement.

Along with praising “my great team and cast,” she thanked Universal Studios and one of its speciality divisions, Focus Features, “for their support of women-driven films.”

Nicole Kidman, a star of “The Beguiled” and three other Cannes selections, received a special prize marking the French festival’s 70th anniversary.

The coveted Palme d’Or, one of filmmaking’s most lauded honors, went to “The Square,” a surprising choice for a festival that typically favors intense dramas. “The Square” is a farce about an art museum staging a radical exhibition that sparks a social crisis.

Pedro Almódovar, the acclaimed director of “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” and “Talk to Her,” headed this year’s jury, which also included Will Smith, Jessica Chastain, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, South Korean director Park Chan-wook and Italian director Paolo Sorrentino.

Here’s the full list of winners. Many of the hits at Cannes factor into the Oscar race.

Palme d’Or: “The Square,” a Swedish art-world satire directed by Ruben Östlund

Grand Prix: “120 Beats Per Minute,” an AIDS drama directed by Robin Campillo

Jury Prize: “Loveless,” a Russian missing-child drama directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev

Best Actress: Diane Kruger, “In the Fade”

Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix, “You Were Never Really Here”

Best Director: Sofia Coppola, “The Beguiled”

Best Screenplay: a tie between “You Were Never Really Here” (written by Lynne Ramsay) and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” (written by Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthymis Filippou)

Camera d’Or, honoring the best debut feature: “Jeune Femme,” directed by Léonor Sérraille

Best Short Film: “A Gentle Night,” directed by Qiu Yang

70th Anniversary Prize: Nicole Kidman, who starred in four Cannes titles (”The Beguiled,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” and “Top of the Lake: China Girl”)

Rihanna And Lupita Nyong’o Are Officially Making A Film With Ava DuVernay

It all started with a tweet.

The Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o movie dreamt up by Twitter users and propelled to viral fame is set to become a reality. Netflix nabbed the rights in “a very aggressive bid” at the Cannes Film Festival, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Back in April, @blaquepink shared an iconic 2014 photo of Rihanna and Nyong’o seated together at Paris Fashion Week.

User @1800SADGAL responded that the pair looked like the perfect duo.

And thus a movie idea was born. Rihanna and Nyong’o were game.

Ava DuVernay will direct and Issa Rae is set to write, according to EW. DuVernay and Rae were also recruited by determined Twitter users.

“I really think it shows the power of people wanting to see stories that are women-centered, women of color-centered that are made by women of color,” DuVernay told TIME last month. “I think it was really interesting that after Rihanna and Lupita were in the picture and the story went viral, it wasn’t about who’s the male lead or who’s the sidekick, it was about who’s going to write it? Who’s going to direct it?”

“I think that is really interesting about people’s interest in who’s creating and who’s telling the story and especially on Twitter where everyone is telling their own story,” she continued. “We’ll see what happens.”

Reps for Rae told Vanity Fair that the Twitter users who came up with the idea “will be credited and included in some form.”

Needless to say, everyone is pretty excited.

Robin Wright’s Stylist Explains the Star’s Cannes Film Festival Fashion — Including Her No-Bra Look!

Robin Wright is the epitome of flawless right now at Cannes Film Festival.

The 51-year-old hit the festival in the south of France this week to promote The Dark of Night, a short film she directed. So far, she has attended a handful events with her fashion-forward style in full force — like this braless slip dress look above — which is why we caught up with her stylist Kemal Harris to get all the details on how she picked her ensembles.

“Cannes is a very traditional event but it takes place in a very bohemian, romantic, vacation-style location, so I tried to align the looks with that energy,” Harris tells PeopleStyle. (Harris also dresses Wright for her gig as Claire Underwood on House of Cards.)

First up, she went to the Opening Gala Dinner in this sheer deep-V look with plain black pumps. “Effortless, sexy and strong outfits” were the goal, notes Harris.

Then, she hit the premiere of Ismael’s Ghosts in a Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello mini. “I loved the contrast of the sharp, tailored shoulders with the stone-encrusted fabric,” says Harris. “Sexy meets strong!”

Then she attended the Women in Motion event in a Stella McCartney suit. “I’m a huge fan of Stella’s tailoring and thought a suit would be a nice way to break up the dress story,” explains Harris. “I flipped the cuffs of the jacket and pants to show a bit more skin and added the leopard Schutz heels to keep it feminine.” (And you can get the shoes — they’re $ 170 on schutz-shoes.com.)

And, finally, what inspired the supersexy green slip dress by Los Angeles designer Michelle Mason for the Loveless premiere. “I loved its vintage feel but the fabric and fit is totally modern,” says Harris. “The jewel tone of the green inspired me to accent with the raspberry Stuart Weitzman heels and the royal blue velvet Hayward clutch. I topped it off with the Cartier Panthere bracelet because its green emerald eyes matched the dress.”

While this look is incredible body-conscious, it’s also “the most comfortable dress there is because it’s unstructured and the fabric is very light,” says Harris.

Though, she has one stipulation — you have to feel good enough to go braless, as Wright did. “You must have a confident attitude to wear a backless version — it means no bra,” says Harris. “I would also recommend seamless underwear by Commando or Calvin Klein.”

A Black Lesbian Horror Film From ‘Get Out’ Producer Is In The Works

Screenwriter Dee Rees is to heart-rending films about black lesbians as producer Jason Blum is to eerily relevant social horror movies ― and the two are joining forces for what should be a one-of-a-kind movie that speaks to the terror of homophobia, sexism and racism, at the very least.

Rees is the director of the 2011 Sundance film “Pariah,” about a young black lesbian coming to terms with her sexuality and familial rejection, and the Golden Globe-nominated biopic “Bessie” about 1920s queer blues singer Bessie Smith. Blum produced the second highest-grossing R-rated horror film in North American history with 2017’s “Get Out,” a social thriller that intertwines components of the genre with the experience of being black in America.

Both have mastered the art of using cinema as insight into painful everyday American realities, and, according to a New York Times Magazine article published Thursday, will soon be combining their storytelling talents.

Blum, who is a fan of Rees’ critically acclaimed Sundance movie “Mudbound,” said Rees recently pitched a horror film centered on a black lesbian couple who just moved to the countryside together, and he was all for it.

They met at a recent event in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Bel Air, where both gave speeches to a room of Sundance Institute benefactors. After Rees and Blum both spoke to the other’s brilliance, they connected after Blum’s speech for a meeting of minds.

Rees’ pitch to Blum went as follows: “You’ve got me and my wife, two black lesbians, and when we first moved in, we fought every day over all these little things: ‘Why is this over there? Did you move that?’ ” she said.

“Maybe it was a ghost,” Rees continued. “Or maybe it was some other force — like us not wanting to be there or fitting in. Anyway, that’s my horror-movie pitch,” Rees said.

Blum was sold. Just a few weeks later, the two met for lunch and began talking business.

“I can’t tell you how rare it is that people mean what they say in this business,” Rees told writer Ryan Bradley of Blum. “He’s just letting me make the best possible version of what I want to make.”

We don’t know how long this will take, but in the meantime, let’s imagine Jordan Peele is somewhere satisfying a screenwriting itch.

Kardashian Sisters Get Political, Film Visit To Planned Parenthood

The Kardashians aren’t exactly known for their political activism, but we’re living in crazy times.

Kim, Kourtney and Khloe were spotted holding hands as they walked into a Planned Parenthood clinic in West Los Angeles on Thursday.

Sources told TMZ that the reality stars met with the organization’s leaders and discussed the health care services offered by the nonprofit and how President Trump’s administration is affecting them.

According to TMZ’s sources, the goal of the Kardashians’ visit, which was taped for their E! series “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” was to find out how the family can raise awareness for Planned Parenthood and how they can contribute in the future.

No word as to why the Kardashians decided to pick this moment to get involved, but it may have something to do with the fact that earlier this month, the House of Representatives voted to defund Planned Parenthood as part of the GOP’s American Health Care Act. The bill, which still has to go through the Senate before its passed, would prevent Medicaid from reimbursing Planned Parenthood for preventive health services such as birth control, Pap smears and sexually transmitted infection screenings.

Dark Phoenix Film Officially Happening, Releasing in 2018

2018 will be a major release year for the X-Men film universe, as 20th Century Fox has dated three mutant movies for next year.

IGN can confirm that the New Mutants film will be released in theaters on April 13, 2018. Fox will then debut Deadpool 2, which recently had Josh Brolin cast as Cable, on June 1, 2018. Finally, the third and final X-Men film of the year, Dark Phoenix, will be released on November 2, 2018.

The dating of Dark Phoenix confirms earlier reports that suggested the next upcoming X-Men film, reportedly first known as X-Men: Supernova, would revisit the Jean Grey/Phoenix saga, with Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner returning to her role as Grey following 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Turner recently discussed when the next X-Men film might start shooting.
