All the Times Fast Food Brands Clapped Back at Their Haters on Twitter

Oooh, burn!

In recent years, Twitter has become a major marketing tool for all brands, but it’s also become a great way for fast food joints to clap back at their haters (and their competition).

While Wendy’s quickly gained a reputation for having the sassiest Twitter on the block, especially because of their ongoing feud with McDonald’s over fresh versus frozen beef, other brands took notice and began dishing out their own snarky tweets in response to customer questions, celebrity news, or other brands’ promotions.

Read on for some of the best zingers from the fast food giants.

Taco Bell

While Taco Bell doesn’t typically engage in social media fights, the brand has had a few standout moments from their own Twitter account, including their correction of a grammar error in one of White Castle’s tweets to Chrissy Teigen. The taco joint also fired back at Old Spice when the deodorant company accused the fast food chain of false advertising.

DiGiorno

Frozen pizza company DiGiorno also joined in on the fun, inciting a pizza war with Papa John’s. The frozen pizza chain mocked Papa John’s slogan “Better Ingredients. Better Pizza.” when they tweeted a declining graph meant to represent Papa John’s sales above a tweet that read, “Better Pizza. Better Sales.” The company also briefly changed their bio to the new slogan to spite Papa John’s.

Burger King

Aside from their epic promposal to Wendy’s on a marquee sign outside of one of their restaurants, Burger King has also thrown shade at the company on social media. First, the chain used social media to promote their spicy chicken nuggets, a menu item that Wendy’s had previously discontinued, leaving the Twitter-verse in an outrage. The brand found people’s old tweets asking where Wendy’s spicy nuggets went and used them as advertising for their own spicy nugget addition to their menu.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Then, Burger King promoted a 5 for $ 4 deal just days after Wendy’s announced their 4 for $ 4 deal. Even though they didn’t mention the square-burger chain in their tweet directly, Twitter users were quick to notice the shade in their tweet which read, “Because 5 is better than 4.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

However, Wendy’s never goes down without a fight, so when a Twitter user, who has since switched their account to private, asked what Wendy’s had in response to the deal, they responded with two simple words: “edible food.”

Wendy’s

Of course, Wendy’s has the longest history of roasting people on Twitter, including their iconic tweet suggesting that asking to be directed to the nearest McDonald’s is essentially the same as asking to be directed to a garbage can.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The company also recently called out pro-golfer Tiger Woods when he flubbed his first hole at the 2018 U.S. Open, scoring an unimpressive triple bogey. “Tiger, next time you’re going to get a triple…” the brand tweeted beneath a photo of their triple cheeseburger.

Hot Dog Sushi? Kim Kardashian Invents ‘Creative’ Food to Please North and Saint

Kim Kardashian West isn’t afraid to get creative in the kitchen!

On Saturday, the mom of three shared that she had come up with a brand new type of food for her daughter North, 4 ½, and son Saint, 2, to eat: hot dog sushi rolls.

Sharing a photo of the innovative snack on her Instagram Stories, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, 37, explained that “when your kids LOVE sushi & hotdogs you get creative.”

The reality star and husband Kanye West are also parents to daughter Chicago West, who was born in January.

The KKW Beauty mogul also continued to break her “no jewelry” rule on Saturday as she posted a picture of a series of chain necklaces arranged over her cleavage, including one which read “Pablo,” likely a tribute to her husband‘s last album, The Life of Pablo.

A few of the other layered necklaces Kardashian West wore also seemed to be a testament to her love for West, as they appeared to be from his 12-piece jewelry collection, which consists of thick-band rings and medallion-style pendant necklaces.

“Hey Saturday,” she simply captioned the shot.

Kardashian West recently caused a stir after posting a topless photo to her Instagram feed on Thursday, which she said was taken by her 4 ½-year-old daughter.

In the photo, the reality star wears an unclasped bra, black spandex and she conceals her chest with her hands. Her reflection (as well as North’s) can be seen in the mirror.

Kardashian West’s hair is brunette in the photo, which indicates it’s probably a throwback as the busy mom of three has remained committed to her platinum locks.

TAKING THINGS SLOW: Jussara Lee hasn’t matched Lauren Singer’s zero-waste lifestyle in that two year’s worth of trash can be contained in a 16-ounce Mason jar, but the designer is doing her part to share the upsides of sustainability.
At this weekend’s Slow Food Nations event in Denver, Lee will be part of a roster of speakers that includes Alice Waters, Kimbal Musk and James Beard award-winning chef Alon Shaya. More than 10,000 people are expected at the Slow Food Nations, which Lee described as “a modicum number,” compared to its umbrella organization, Terra Madre in Turin, which attracts half a million people. “But this is a great start in the heart of the country that invented fast food. We hope to change that model for good,” she added.
After first encountering the Slow Food movement in Italy in the Nineties, she quickly took to its philosophy of growing vegetables in smaller scale without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers and raising animals without antibiotics and hormones. In recent years, she aligned her ethos personally and professionally, drawing several parallels between her fashion career and the Slow Food movement. Artist Realizes Only Appropriate Use Of Trump Tweets Is Plant Food

President Donald Trump’s tweets might be polluting the natural environment that is your mind, but they’re finding greater purpose somewhere: specifically, in a subterranean lavender field in New York City.

Austrian artist Martin Roth, now based in NYC, is the mad gardener behind an idyllic new art exhibition, which happens to be powered in part by Trump’s 140-character declarations. Nestled inside the Austrian Cultural Forum of Midtown Manhattan, it consists of 200 lavender shrubs that are nurtured by grow lights whose power corresponds with the activities of several social media accounts.

That’s right, the strength of the bulbs depends on how frequently accounts like @POTUS, @realDonaldTrump, @PressSec and @KellyannePolls issue a tweet. (Other connected accounts: @foxandfriends, @seanhannity, @tuckercarlson, @breitbartnews, @heritage, @CNN and @washingtonpost.)

Motivated by the “heightened anxiety” many have felt in the wake of Trump’s election, the arrangement is meant to turn the chaos of our present political reality into something capable of assuaging our collective terror.

“The pace and tenor of the current political discourse, blasted out through social media 24/7 without respite, affects our psyche in a profound way,” Martin told Mashable. “I’m interested in Twitter because it seemed to be the only news getting through. It’s fast and used as a political weapon, but … it seems overall just to be there to distract us.”

Using eight tons of soil, six rows of lavender and a soothing backdrop of nature-adorned wallpaper, Martin has created what appears at first to be place of refuge, a fragrance-filled spot where art lovers can stop to, quite literally, smell the flowers.

However, they can’t do so without wondering just how many tweets are flying through the digital ether at any given moment. If the lavender is thriving, so too are POTUS and co.’s statuses. The effect, Hyperallergic’s Claire Voon notes, is amplified by “the windowless, concrete space,” which she describes as “claustrophobic.” Even when the air smells like perfume, something capable of transcending the underground sanctuary is probably amiss ― you just can’t see it.

We Pay Low Prices For Chinese Food Because Of Racial Biases About ‘Cheap’ Labor

You may not think it, but there’s a direct relationship between plunging your chopsticks into that white, quart-sized box of cheaply priced Chinese food — and a laborer diligently driving a spike to lay the railroad tracks that became the gateway to the American West.

May, which is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, marks the anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. It was largely built by Chinese immigrants from 1864 to 1869, working at a grueling pace for less money than white workers. And these labor practices have an impact today on how much we’re willing to pay for Chinese food ― rooted in a perception that Chinese labor is inherently “cheap,” historians say.

The earliest Chinese restaurants in America were created for Chinese railroad laborers, who were under contract and lacked negotiating power as they laid tracks from Omaha, Nebraska, to Sacramento, California ― cutting through the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. With Chinese laborers earning an estimated two-thirds of what white workers made, owners had to keep restaurant prices low, Beatrice Chen, programming vice president at the Museum of Chinese in America, explained to HuffPost.

The mainstream American consumer mindset is that there is a ceiling to how much we’re willing to pay for Chinese food.

“This perception of Chinese restaurants has stuck, even though high-end Chinese restaurants in Asia are common and popular,” Chen said. “The mainstream American consumer mindset is that there is a ceiling to how much we’re willing to pay for Chinese food, even if they are made with the same fresh ingredients and intricate cooking techniques as say, French or Japanese cuisine.”

‘Cheap Labor’ And ‘Job Stealers’

The railroad also laid the foundation for perceptions of Chinese people themselves. White workers at the time were unionizing, and were less willing to work for lower wages. Railroad executives had been skeptical of the aptitude of Chinese workers, but the laborers set out to prove them wrong, Chen explained.

“This led to the general perception that Chinese were willing to work for lower wages and were job stealers,” she said.

But what was perceived as a robotic work ethic might have just been survival, Beth Lew-Williams, an assistant professor at Princeton specializing in Asian American history, told HuffPost in an interview in December. She pointed out a discriminatory labor system within the railroad.

Chinese were paid less, given the worst strenuous jobs. People against the Chinese saw this as revealing of their innate nature.

“It was a race-based dual wage system at the time,” Lew-Williams said. “Chinese were paid less, given the worst strenuous jobs. People against the Chinese saw this as revealing of their innate nature. That Chinese were fundamentally ‘cheap’ labor and designed to do this back-breaking labor.”

On top of negative perceptions, Chinese contributions were largely erased through history. Chen said that of the 17,000 railroad workers, 15,000 were Chinese, though estimates vary. A photo below of the final stake being driven into the track at Promontory Summit, Utah, would have people believe they didn’t contribute at all.

“I hope that telling and disseminating American history told from Asian American perspectives will illuminate that Asian Americans are not necessarily quiet (per the stereotype), but rather, Asian American history/stories and perspectives tend to be silenced in the mainstream,” Chen said.

Building A Railroad, And Then Banned

Following completion of the tracks, the U.S. implemented the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, stemming further immigration of Chinese laborers. It was the first major law that banned a group’s immigration to the U.S. based on ethnicity.

“The Chinese were originally seen as racially unassimilable,” Lew-Williams said. “They could not become Americanized. They were simultaneously racially inferior, backwards, savage heathen ― and in some dangerous ways ― superior.”

The act was technically repealed on Dec. 17, 1943, allowing 105 Chinese visas per year. The measure was largely seen as an attempt to maintain U.S.-China relationships against Japan during World War II.

In 1965, the Immigration and Nationality Act fully reversed exclusionary practices, which some historians say was meant to prop up Asians as the “model minority” during the Civil Rights movement ― sending a message to other minority groups.

An Immigrant Story For Today

Much has been written about the dangers in grouping together Asian Americans as a model minority monolith and erasing the experiences of immigrants. Peter Kwong, a former Asian American studies professor at Hunter College, pointed out that the struggles of the original Chinese Americans have persisted.

“Because some Chinese people succeeded doesn’t mean working-class Chinese have the same capability and upward mobility. It’s a class issue,” Kwong told HuffPost in an interview before he died in March.

It may be that food is the easiest lens through which to view such thorny topics as class, race, social mobility and how much value we place on a given culture.

If you take price as a surrogate for prestige … there are some cuisines we are willing to pay for and some we are not willing to pay for, and that is related partly, I think, to how we evaluate those national cultures and their people.

Krishnendu Ray, a professor of food studies at New York University, has written about the topic, and said that we might simply hold less veneration for food from certain countries that we see as less well-off.

“If you take price as a surrogate for prestige … there are some cuisines we are willing to pay for and some we are not willing to pay for, and that is related partly, I think, to how we evaluate those national cultures and their people,” Ray said in Voice of America.

Eddie Huang, owner of Baohaus and a host on Vice, often talks about how mainstream appreciation of food and culture remain a barometer for how conditional your status is as a foreigner, and of your stock value in America.

Huang has expressed dismay that immigrants like his parents feel they have to work harder just to achieve the same pay as non-immigrants. And thumbing his nose to any such established expectation, Huang has said in the past

“I sell Taiwanese gua bao for a full f**king price in America.”

We Tried It: A Baby Food Delivery Service

What It Is: Nurture Life, a food delivery service for babies and toddlers (and their parents)

Who Tried It: Kate Hogan, Digital Specials Director

Why We Tried It: I have an endlessly hungry 14-month-old son and sometimes need a break from the stove

Level of Difficulty: 1 — if you can turn on an oven, you can handle this

When I had my son Henry 14 months ago, I knew that I wanted to serve him homemade food as much as I could. An egg allergy diagnosis made that all the more important once we did start solids at 6 months, since a lot of store-bought and restaurant items are off the table (literally) for now.

That said, there are definitely days when I only have the energy to heat up some chicken nuggets and frozen peas or am serving him baked salmon for the 100th time because I’m severely lacking in creativity (a Pinterest-perfect mom, I am not). So when Nurture Life reached out about sending me a few items from their baby food delivery service, I was super excited for a little break from the kitchen.

The service is subscription-based — you can get eight, 14 or 21 meals per week — and they accommodate all sorts of dietary restrictions (egg allergies included, yay!) and work in a facility free of peanuts, tree nuts and shellfish. You have the option of a strictly vegetarian menu or the standard meat/veggie/fish, and can select your own dishes or leave it to the chef’s choice.

Since Henry is on the cusp of their baby and toddler offerings, they sent me a mix of their stage 3 baby foods and 1-year-old toddler foods, both well balanced. The baby foods were ready-to-eat jars of chopped up veggies and proteins like turkey or salmon, which were perfect for lunch or for popping open when we went out to eat and needed to keep him sated while we waited for our meals.

The toddler foods (packaged to just heat and serve) were legit: he gobbled up a hearty portion of cauliflower mac and cheese (above) in two sittings, and loved the falafel, something I would never think to make him. But more seasoned items — in particular, a chicken tikka masala that Mom and Dad would love —ended up all over the floor.

To me, the one downside was that I did feel I was wasting food — aside from the vetoed chicken tikka masala, Henry didn’t finish any of the jars, all of which were supposed to be consumed within 24 hours of opening. But to have every lunch and dinner taken care of for a week was a big weight off of my shoulders.

The verdict: It’s definitely a luxury — weekly plans start at $ 45 and go up to $ 119 — but if I knew I had a particularly busy week coming up (or a particularly bare fridge) I would try Nurture Life again. Everything was healthy and delicious (I sampled it all) and since you can freeze just about all of their items, you can stretch what they send you for a while

Bon appétit, babies!

Herbal Bioactives and Food Fortification

Herbal Bioactives and Food Fortification

Recent major shifts in global health care management policy have been instrumental in renewing interest in herbal medicine. However, literature on the development of products from herbs is often scattered and narrow in scope. Herbal Bioactives and Food Fortification: Extraction and Formulation provides information on all aspects of the extraction of biological actives from plants and the development of dietary supplements and fortified food using herbal extracts. The book begins with a brief survey of the use of herbs in different civilizations and traces the evolution of herbal medicine, including the emergence of nutraceuticals from the discipline of ethnopharmacology and the Alma Ata Declaration of 1978. It moves on to describe various aspects of the extraction process, including selection of plant species, quality control of raw materials, the comminution of herbs, and the selection of solvents. It also describes the optimization of extraction in relation to response surface methodology before describing uses of herbal extracts in food supplements and fortified foods. With special attention paid to stability analysis and the masking of tastes, the book gives an overview of the formulation of various types of tablets, capsules, and syrups using herbal extracts. It also describes the benefits of foods fortified with herbal extracts such as soups, yogurt, sauces, mayonnaise, pickles, chutneys, jams, jellies, marmalades, cheese, margarine, sausages, bread, and biscuits, as well as some beverages. Herbal Bioactives and Food Fortification covers the fundamental steps in herbal extraction and processing in a single volume. It explains how to choose, optimize, analyze, and use extracts for fortification, making it an excellent source for nutraceutical researchers and practitioners in science and industry.
