The Salting Lands the September Cover of O, The Oprah Magazine, But Founders Plan Growth Carefully

PROCEED WITH CAUTION: While many brands fortunate enough to land the cover of O, the Oprah Magazin” tend to ramp up production, The Salting has taken a much more measured approach.
Eighteen months after the sharply edited unisex label was launched by Michael Smaldone and Michael Ward, Winfrey donned a gold-colored fedora and caftan on the September cover of her magazine. After O’s creative director Adam Glassman e-mailed to share the news, Smaldone said, “I think I almost fell off my chair. It was pretty great.”
Glassman, whom Smaldone has known for years, liked the looks of The Salting and sent a few of his colleagues in to photograph the collection, and later pulled some items and requested a few hats to be made in Winfrey’s size for her personally. Additional clothes were later sent. About a month ago, Smaldone and Ward were tipped off that a cover shot was a possibility with the caveat that nothing is ever certain.
Trying to be prepared, The Salting launched its e-commerce site earlier this week. There was also considerable discussion about the potential sales ripple triggered by the Oprah effect. “We thought what the jackpot would be, that would be her on the cover in

Marks & Spencer, Founders Factory Form JV to Support Retail Start-ups

START ME UP: Marks & Spencer is embracing the future with a joint venture aimed at finding and developing retail start-ups. M&S has teamed with Britain’s Founders Factory, a well-funded incubator for start-up businesses, on the project.
M&S said Monday the partnership will give it “direct access to cutting-edge technologies” through investment in talented entrepreneurs and businesses. M&S will become the majority shareholder in the JV, which wants to build a portfolio of investments that it will seek to grow and scale.
The retailer will become Founders Factory’s exclusive U.K. retail partner, and invest in a number of start-ups that will be sourced through Founders Factory’s global network.
M&S said it’s looking to discover new technologies, business models and entrepreneurial thinking as it seeks to put digital at the heart of its transformation strategy.
Steve Rowe, chief executive officer of M&S, said he’s hoping the start-ups and entrepreneurs “will provide disruptive thinking and questioning to the way we work at a time of critical transformation within the business. By investing in new innovative technologies and products we hope to change the way we work and operate.”
Founders Factory was cofounded by Brent Hoberman, who started Lastminute.com, and is focused on launching and scaling start-ups across a

Happy Socks Founders Map Out Expansion Strategy

“I thought it was going to be a multibillion-dollar brand in one year and it’s ended up being a disappointment,” said Viktor Tell when asked what was his initial goal for Happy Socks.
Tell, who cofounded Happy Socks in 2008 with Mikael Söderlindh, was joking. He and Soderlindh, whose cheery dispositions match the name of their brand, were both in New York to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the sock company they started in Sweden.
Happy Socks began during an economic downturn when customers couldn’t splurge on a jacket or coat, but could afford a bright pair of printed socks, which, at the time, were hard to find. They filled a void and built a brand message that resonated with artists and companies ranging from The Beatles and Pharrell Williams to Rolex, which have all collaborated on Happy Socks capsule collections.
Over the past 10 years, the company has grown into an international sock design brand that is sold in 90-plus countries, with more than 10,000 points of sale. The business includes an online site and a growing portfolio of company-owned stores. In 2016, the brand generated retail sales of 100 million euros, or $ 106.4 million, and in 2017 it was acquired by

Trove Founders Mary Orton and Rich Scudellari Win Hilldun Business Innovation Award

WHY WAIT: The Fashion Group International’s Rising Star awards is still a few weeks away, but this year’s winner of the Hilldun Business Innovation Award will be Trove’s Mary Orton and Rich Scudellari.
A few years back while working on Wall Street at Deutsche Bank, Orton started the style blog Memorandum for professional women much like herself in need of where-to-work options. After switching coasts for San Francisco, she built up her Instagram followers and focused full-time to style blogging.
With the help of her husband Scudellari, she created a style blog aggregator that pulls in outfit posts from top bloggers and lets users save favorite pieces, or click to buy them. The way she saw it, fashion bloggers were creating all this professional content, but there wasn’t an ideal platform for them in terms of discovery. The affiliate link remains the same, so the relationship between the recommending blogger and the merchant stays intact. Trove helps bloggers monetize through affiliate links, gain new followers and get insight into which content resonates. Users can save items to a digital “closet,” and Trove provides corresponding analytics into elements such as how many users clicked through the images and the number of people who

Proenza Schouler Founders Talk Paris Move for Creativity’s Sake

NEW YORK — After 15 years of personal and professional partnership, Proenza Schouler founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez seem close to becoming a single creative entity.
It’s impossible to tell who drew which sketch for their most recent collection and they even dress in a similar, staunchly normcore fashion; like Larry David, if he were a young aesthete. During Thursday night’s talk with former CNN host Alina Cho at the Metropolitan Museum of Art here as part of the museum’s “Atelier With Alina Cho” series, McCollough dressed in a red pullover and black Adidas Gazelles, while Hernandez wore a black pullover and black Nike Air Force 1s. They had on almost identical charcoal skinny jeans.
This “morphing,” as McCullough put it, started in design school and probably lent itself to what seems to have been a conflict-free decision to move their runway presentations to Paris after spending their entire careers in New York.
“It was bittersweet for us to leave New York,” McCollough said. “I think New York is so good at fostering the young and up-and-coming and I think if we’d lived in one of the other fashion capitals, we wouldn’t have necessarily had the same opportunities that we had being

Chanel Buys Founder’s Villa La Pausa

HOUSE PROUD: Chanel said Wednesday that it has purchased Gabrielle Chanel’s villa La Pausa in the south of France. It is the only one of her homes that she entirely imagined, constructed and decorated.
During the Twenties, the designer had visited the area with the Duke of Westminster. She decided to build a home overlooking the Mediterranean and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin.
Chanel bought the land on Sept. 30, 1928, and the construction of the villa ended in January 1930.
The house’s architecture has numerous references to that of Aubazine, the orphanage (and former abbey) where Chanel spent her adolesence. The furnishings were “new, simple and modern,” and caused an immediate sensation, according to the house of Chanel.
Its founder informally hosted the likes of Misia Sert, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dalí and Paul Iribe at La Pausa.
Following the death of the Duke of Westminster in 1954, Chanel sold La Pausa and its contents to the American author and editor Emery Reves, who welcomed friends such as Winston Churchill, Greta Garbo and Jacqueline Onassis there.
“It is therefore an essential witness to the life of Gabrielle Chanel, which today joins the patrimony of Chanel,” the house stated.
La Pausa is to be renovated in the spirit of its origins.
