Lingua Franca Teams With Artist-Activist Diana Weymar

Textile artist Diana Weymar has teamed with Lingua Franca for her “Tiny Pricks” project. For the first time, Weymar’s collection of subversive series of antique textiles, embroidered with short quotes by Donald Trump, is going on public display in New York. The Lingua Franca boutique on Bleecker Street will display works from the project from June 13 to early September, during which time the brand will also offer a series of limited-edition “Tiny Pricks” T-shirts, made from recycled materials.
“When Diana and I found each other on Instagram, an immediate connection was forged. We both picked up the needle as a way to cope during troubling times and I was so inspired by the community of resisters she’s helping to build,” said Lingua Franca’s Rachelle Hruska MacPherson.
Since starting the community-sourced project in 2018, the artist has amassed contributions from more than 400 people. The project is a nod to the women’s suffrage movement, and offers an antithesis to the fleeting quality of Twitter. Also, it’s cathartic: Weymar and Lingua Franca are encouraging others to add to the archive by adding their own hand-stitched work in line with the series, which include phrases such as “I want great climate” and “I’m the

Lingua Franca Opens First Store on Bleecker

NEW YORK — Lingua Franca is among the new storefronts on Bleecker Street here.
Rachelle Hruska MacPherson, who founded the brand of cashmere sweaters embroidered with phrases in 2016, opened her first store at 382 Bleecker Street earlier this week. The space is one of the seven storefronts Brookfield Properties bought earlier this year with plans to revive the neighborhood, a once-booming retail destination that became a bit of a ghost town in recent years. Lingua Franca, along with Prabal Gurung, Slightly Alabama and Bonberi and Fleurotica, are the tenants involved in the Love, Bleecker project done with Skylight and Brookfield to bring art, music and cultural programming to the neighborhood along with retail.
Hruska lives in the neighborhood with her family. Her husband Sean MacPherson owns the Waverly Inn, located on Bank Street. “We’re super committed to the neighborhood, and I’ve always been interested in what happened on Bleecker,” said Hruska MacPherson. “When I moved to New York 15 years ago, that’s where I went to hang out and shop and pretend to be cool. It was sad to see it be dead and fall to all these crazy high rents.”
The 560-square-foot store was designed by Sean MacPherson and features custom

Salma Hayek to Receive Franca Sozzani Award at Venice International Film Festival

IN THE NAME OF FRANCA: Salma Hayek will be the second recipient of the Franca Sozzani Award, which recognizes women who stand out for both their artistic careers and their social commitment.
The Mexican actress and movie producer will receive the award, established by late Vogue Italia editor in chief Franca Sozzani’s family, on Aug. 31 during the 75th edition of the Venice International Film Festival. The ceremony will take place at Sozzani’s favorite Belmond Hotel Cipriani, a five-star hotel on Venice’s Giudecca island.
“Her example and her teaching live on in a countless number of little everyday actions, which still punctuate life in the firm today,” said Fedele Usai, chief executive officer of Condé Nast Italia, which supports the Franca Sozzani Award. “This tribute to Franca is an opportunity to celebrate a person who was unique and unrepeatable, and who is a constant and challenging benchmark for all of us at Condé Nast.”
Julian Moore was the first to receive the Franca Sozzani Award last September.

A Look Back At Franca Sozzani’s Iconic Style

Franca Sozzani, the longtime editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue, died Thursday at age 66 after battling an illness.

Beloved by the industry and fashion enthusiasts alike, Sozanni was forward-thinking and passionate, catapulting Vogue Italia into the global spotlight with powerful imagery from the day she took the reigns as editor-in-chief in 1998. Her iconic and important magazine world moments include releasing a famous “black issue” in 2008, marking the first time a major glossy exclusively featured models of color.

As Hamish Bowles wrote on Thursday, Sozzani “turned her Vogue into a magazine that not only celebrated the power of the image, but also used fashion stories as a platform to discuss broader issues, and the obsessions of the fashionable world. Franca had a passion for, and a deep knowledge of, fashion and its history, but an ability to keep an amused distance from its modern day excesses.”

Beyond her admirable career, Sozanni was known for the impeccable personal style she displayed on many a red carpet and at various events through the years.

Here, in remembrance, a peek back at some of her most iconic looks:
