Adidas Releases Arkyn Sneaker With Gender Talk, Kendall Jenner Visit

MANY HATS — To launch its new shoe, called Arkyn, Adidas staged a discussion centered on women and the different hats they wear, the latest example of how sneaker brands are muscling into female territory.
Kendall Jenner showed up at the end of the conversation, which took place in a back room of the Adidas flagship in the Marais district of Paris, with a small gathering of a mostly French and largely female audience.
Jenner’s arrival was announced by a noisy crowd outside the store that had gathered for a glimpse of the model and social media star.
“I know how to say bonjour,” she said. “That’s pretty much it,” she added, referring to her French language skills.
She joined Daniëlle Cathari, a 23-year-old Dutch designer who is working with Adidas Originals, launching the second drop next week on the small stage.
“I’m super excited for you,” Jenner said, addressing Cathari who had just outlined her swift career rise to the audience.
Cathari, who learned how to sew from YouTube clips and was discovered by Adidas on Instagram, reconstructed vintage Adidas tracksuits while studying fashion in Amsterdam, a project that has landed her an official collaboration with the sportswear brand. While her design career is taking

CFDA Reminds Voters to Consider Race, Gender and Inclusivity for This Year’s Fashion Awards

GET OUT THE VOTE: The Council of Fashion Designers of America has reminded voters for its Fashion Awards to give some thought to race, gender and inclusivity.
In an e-mail sent out Monday, CFDA president and chief executive officer Steven Kolb advised recipients, “We truly want the event to celebrate the full creative spectrum and richness of American fashion. Just think of how much fashion is changing, and the diversity of our industry. Designers with broad cultural backgrounds and political ideas are expressing their experiences and beliefs in their collections. Their work deserves greater acknowledgment, acceptance and visibility.”
Nearly 1,000 people are invited to participate and roughly 700 to 750 actively participate in the process for the CFDA Fashion Awards, which calls for nominations and then a vote for winners.
“Over the years, a lot of people have always said that they felt like the same people, over and over, are getting the same awards. Awards are really based on talent. Hopefully, people are nominating and voting based on who they think are doing the best things. But the power’s with the people — with the nominating committee, with the awards’ guild. If they feel there are people who are more deserving then

Common Gender Aims to Tap Underpenetrated Men’s Market in China

SHANGHAI — It was a case of the venue determining the launch city of men’s wear label Common Gender rather than Shanghai’s burgeoning reputation as an international fashion hub.
When looking at locations for the label’s first fashion show, Lea Chan, vice president and marketing director of parent company EPO Fashion Group, searched for venues in Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu, but settled on the former after discovering West Bund Art Center. Once an old aircraft factory, the industrial space has held onto much of its raw, urban interior, which was in keeping with the brand’s Nineties Berlin-inspired pop-up shop and edgy, angular fashion show on Tuesday.
The pop-up store and fashion show were attended by key Chinese influencers and business partners of the brand and featured a cast of international and local male models purposefully storming down the catwalk with a performance by American twin brother electro punk rock band The Garden.
EPO Fashion Group, parent company of women’s wear brands Mo & Co. and Edition 10; cosmetics brand REC, and children’s wear label Little Mo & Co. posted group sales of 3.5 billion yuan in 2017, or $ 555 million. Common Gender’s launch marks the Chinese company’s move into the domestic men’s wear market.

School Pulls Book About Gender Non-Conforming Kid After Backlash

A pair of children’s authors is firing back after a North Carolina school district scrapped plans to incorporate their book about a gender non-conforming boy into its anti-bullying curriculum.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg school administrators had been planning to use Jacob’s New Dress, about a young boy who likes to wear dresses, in first-grade classes as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month in April. On Friday, however, Superintendent Ann Clark told The New York Times that the 2014 book had been replaced “due to some concerns” about content. Michael Hall’s Red: A Crayon’s Story, which follows a blue crayon misidentified with a red label, would be read instead.

Written by Sarah and Ian HoffmanJacob’s New Dress had been criticized by the N.C. Values Coalition, which supports “standards in higher education that do not violate religious freedom and free speech rights of students” and is opposed to same-sex marriage, according to its website.

“The purpose of our elementary schools is to teach writing, reading and arithmetic, not to encourage boys to wear dresses,” an N.C. Values Coalition official wrote in a statement to The Charlotte ObserverJacob’s New Dress, the official argued, was “not appropriate for any child whose parents support traditional family values.”

The Hoffmans, who reside in California, said the furor that Jacob’s New Dress had generated was “confusing,” telling The Charlotte Observer that their book’s message was one of “love and acceptance.” The couple based the book on their experiences raising their 14-year-old son, Sam, who favored pink and once asked to wear a dress to preschool.

Speaking to The Huffington Post, Ian Hoffman dismissed the N.C. Values Coalition’s claim that Jacob’s New Dress encouraged boys to wear dresses. “Our hope, when we wrote this book, was that someday it would be considered quaint,” he said. “We imagined future generations saying, ‘What was the fuss about?’ Clearly, there’s more work to do … our book is a small piece of a much larger effort to build a more empathetic, compassionate culture.”

In an interview with The Charlotte Observer, Sarah Hoffman echoed those sentiments, arguing against the implication that the book would somehow turn children gay or transgender. “If a white kid reads a book about Martin Luther King Jr.,” she said, “will they become black?”

The couple’s book has stirred controversy before. In 2015, some parents of kindergarten students in Pennsylvania’s Lampeter-Strasburg School District objected to Jacob’s New Dress being read to their children without prior notification.

An area pastor also spoke out against the book in an interview with Lancaster Online at the time, saying that a family associated with his church was troubled since they had a child in the class where the book had been read.

“I am not suggesting that any of the school officials are pushing the gay agenda, yet their actions give the appearance that they are,” Pastor Jamie Mitchell of Harvest Bible Chapel said. He called upon Lampeter-Strasburg school administrators to “apologize, take responsibility and then publicly promise never to introduce this kind of material with this kind of agenda to our children.”

Handbook of Gender Research in Psychology

Handbook of Gender Research in Psychology

Donald R. McCreary and Joan C. Chrisler The Development of Gender Studies in Psychology Studies of sex differences are as old as the? eld of psychology, and they have been conducted in every sub?eld of the discipline. There are probably many reasons for the popularity of these studies, but three reasons seem to be most prominent. First, social psychological studies of person perception show that sex is especially salient in social groups. It is the? rst thing people notice about others, and it is one of the things we remember best (Fiske, Haslam, & Fiske, 1991; Stangor, Lynch, Duan, & Glass, 1992). For example, people may not remember who uttered a witty remark, but they are likely to remember whether the quip came from a woman or a man. Second, many people hold? rm beliefs that aspects of physiology suit men and women for particular social roles. Men’s greater upper body strength makes them better candidates for manual labor, and their greater height gives the impression that they would make good leaders ( i.e. , people we look up to). Women’s reproductive capacity and the caretaking tasks ( e.g. , breastfeeding, baby minding) that accompany it make them seem suitable for other roles that require gentleness and nurturance. Third, the logic that underlies hypothesis testing in the sciences is focused on difference. Researchers design their studies with the hope that they can reject the hypothesis that experimental groups do not differ.

This Clothing Line For Kids Is Saying No To Gender Stereotypes

Inspired by her “spirited” daughter, a Kansas mom has developed a clothing line that says no to harmful gender stereotypes and encourages kids be themselves.

In June 2016, Tricia Steffes launched Crossing Arrows, a new brand that sells superhero capes, jeans and shirts with empowering messages for little girls. Steffes told The Huffington Post her 5-year-old daughter, Allie, is the inspiration for Crossing Arrows.

“After two and a half years of navigating her desire to wear boy clothes because her spirited (tomboy) taste didn’t have room for pink and princesses, I decided to design a line that allowed these spirited girls to embrace their individuality and say no to gender stereotyping,” she said.

Steffes, who works in finance and also operates a clothing line geared toward tall women, said she got the idea to launch a brand for kids in 2015. In January 2016, she started the research process, and the website officially went live in June. As founder and CEO of Crossing Arrows, Steffes works with a marketing manager, Hannah Kowalewski, and designer, Kelsie O’Brien.

The Crossing Arrows brand currently offers shirts with messages like “Be Adventurous,” “Future Coder” and “Donut Holes Not Gender Roles.” The website also has a selection of jeans, superhero capes and superhero-themed dresses

“We want all kids to be confident and feel empowered to pursue what they love.  If that is academia, athletics, music, robotics, dance … whatever it is, we want them to go all out ― to get out of their comfort zones to pursue their passions,” Steffes said.

“We want to teach them through our line of graphic tees that progress is more important than perfection and that each child is unique in their own way,” she added. “Our overall mission for our clothes is to give children options that doesn’t force them into a stereotypical box based on their gender.”

Though Crossing Arrows was created with girls in mind, they’re working to expand their intended audience. “The initial concept of our clothing line was specific to what we call the ‘spirited girl’ or sometimes referred to as a ‘tomboy,’ Steffes said.

“However, through the process, we have realized that boys face gender stereotyping in clothing as well, so several of our designs are gender neutral,” she added. Steffes said they look forward to seeing how their business grows and changes over the next year.

But Crossing Arrows is also about more than clothes. “We are also building a community of parents to discuss all things parenting, and more importantly we are building a philanthropic component that surrounds our greatest passion, child advocacy,” Steffes explained.

The brand has pledged to give back a portion of its profits to organizations focused on child advocacy. They are currently working with several nonprofit organizations to build this component of the business model.

Steffes said they also hope to eventually establish a foundation with the same philanthropic goals and plan empowering events to inspire kids to embrace their individuality and take risks. Ultimately, the goal is to have a positive impact on as many children as possible.

So far, they’ve received a lot of positive feedback from parents and kids. “I didn’t realize how much the gender stereotyping in children’s clothing had affected so many families until I launched Crossing Arrows,” the founder said, pointing to reviews from adults who said they wish there’d been a line like this when they were kids.

As for the original target customer, it’s clear she’s a fan as well.

“Allie is very opinionated and confident in what she likes, and she loves our designs and graphic tees,” Steffes told HuffPost, adding, “But what excites her more is knowing that we allow her to be who she is … she appreciates that we don’t make her wear ‘girly’ clothes and dresses.”

Meet our inspiration, Amazing Allie! #spirited #crossingarrows #inspiration

A photo posted by Crossing Arrows (@crossingarrows_designs) on

The mom said both Allie and her older daughter have also been instrumental in shaping the designs.

The Crossing Arrows team is gearing up for some exciting new developments as well. “We’ve had requests to produce other designs and one we are working on is a line of graphic tees for children with autism,” Steffes said.

What else does the future hold? She says you’ll have to “stay tuned!”

These Photos Show The Beautifully Unique Ways These People Express Their Gender

The world is certainly changing for queer people.

From more and more people being able to live as their authentic selves to ensuring rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community via legislation, the last few years have seen especially overwhelming progress in terms of the growing cultural awareness surrounding this community.

A new photography book from Bernd Ott and Emily Besa aims to capture this reality through photos and stories of over 36 individuals who identify at different points along the spectrum of gender identity. Called All The People, the book features individuals from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and the United States who all uniquely transcend traditional notions of gender.

“We hope that some will see that your identity is not defined by socially introduced categorizations,” Ott told The Huffington Post. “Once we can see categories as being arbitrary and meaningless, some may realize that we all share very similar fears and emotions and the same worries and feelings determine our existence. We actually share the same human experience despite what we look like, who we love, or how we love.”

Check out photos from All The People below, as well as an interview with Ott and Besa. All The People is also engaged in a Kickstarter campaign in order to fund its publication — head here for more information.

This Woman Refuses To Shave Her Armpits, And Gender Equality Is Only Part Of It

More and more women are refusing to shave their armpits — and resisting patriarchal beauty standards in the process.

Loyola University of Chicago student Bobby Crowley, who stopped shaving her underarms a few years ago, spoke to the double standard men and women face when it comes to their body hair in a conversation with HuffPost Live.

“It’s not just a body image thing, but it’s also a gender thing,” she said. “This is very clearly a gendered prescription that has been put upon women, whereas men are walking around and no one expects them to shave their armpits, obviously. People will talk about it like it’s a hygiene thing, but really it’s a gender thing. It’s absolutely only prescribed only to women, and there’s no way that women are any messier than [men], that’s for sure.”

While Lizzie Crocker, a staff writer at The Daily Beast, told HuffPost Live’s Nancy Redd that unshaven pits have become “inextricably linked to feminism,” Crowley said her choice to stop shaving was simply a personal one.

“Most importantly for me, when I started, it wasn’t about a movement. It wasn’t about anyone but myself. I would shave [my armpits] and they would be bleeding,” she said. “And really the reason I stopped is because I sort of looked at myself and said, I’m literally hurting myself every day because I have really sensitive skin.”

When she stepped back and questioned why she had been shaving every day, she had an epiphany.

“[I was not shaving] for me. It was a worry that when I lift my arms, I’m going to be shamed for having made a decision about my body that doesn’t go with how other people feel,” she said. “And that, to me, was most important.”

Watch the full HuffPost Live conversation about the female armpit hair movement here.

Women and Gender in the New South: 1865 – 1945

Women and Gender in the New South: 1865 – 1945

In every age and in every culture there have been women who challenged the prevailing gender prescriptions and struck a nerve, resulting in waves of either change or repression. In Women and Gender in the New South, Elizabeth Hayes Turner draws on a multiplicity of sources—part of the great outpouring of works in the field of women’s history that has emerged in the past 40 years—to bring together in one volume the history of conservative, moderate, and even radical women’s groups. The book demonstrates how women and men from different racial and economic backgrounds not only weathered but also shaped the political and cultural landscape of the New South. Employing women''s history, gender analysis, and race and class studies, Women and Gender in the New South shapes this accumulated scholarship into an interpretative overlay that takes southern women and men from the ravages of one war to the opportunities of another.

Body Panic: Gender, Health, and the Selling of Fitness

Body Panic: Gender, Health, and the Selling of Fitness

Are you ripped? Do you need to work on your abs? Do you know your ideal body weight? Your body fat index? Increasingly, Americans are being sold on a fitness ideal — not just thin but toned, not just muscular but cut — that is harder and harder to reach. In Body Panic, Shari L. Dworkin and Faye Linda Wachs ask why. How did these particular body types come to be fit? And how is it that having an unfit, or bad, body gets conflated with being an unfit, or bad, citizen?Dworkin and Wachs head to the newsstand for this study, examining ten years worth of men''s and women''s health and fitness magazines to determine the ways in which bodies are made in today''s culture. They dissect the images, the workouts, and the ideology being sold, as well as the contemporary links among health, morality, citizenship, and identity that can be read on these pages. While women and body image are often studied together, Body Panic considers both women''s and men''s bodies side-by-side and over time in order to offer a more in-depth understanding of this pervasive cultural trend.

High Heels For Men Show Just How Much Gender Expression Has Changed

“Never before have a few inches mattered so much.” The tagline for an upcoming exhibit at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto says everything about guys in heels.

Today, of course, high-heeled shoes are synonymous with femininity. Men who want to add a bit of height have to do so with inserts on the DL, and any non-cowboys wandering around with heels visibly higher than normal might get a few judgy looks. But for about 130 years in the 17th and 18th centuries, Western men wore heeled shoes as an expression of power.

bata 72

Italian, Ferradini, 1972-1975. Worn by Elton John. Celebrities strutted on stage in outrageous outfits and high glittering heels such as this pair, but more conservative men also paired higher heeled shoes with their suits.

It makes sense if you consider the value placed on height. Tall people, particularly men, are associated with confidence and prestige — we actually tend to pay them higher salaries. So one of the questions Elizabeth Semmelhack, curator of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, poses through the exhibit is not why men wore heels at one point, but why they ever stopped.

“We’re so nervous about the idea of men in heels today,” Semmelhack told The Huffington Post. “Hopefully, what this exhibition will do is highlight for people that what’s really curious about the history of men in heels is our current attitude towards it.”

Semmelhack theorizes that heeled shoes were borrowed from Asia, where they were used for horseback riding, in the early 1600s. Persia had been gaining political influence around that time, and exoticism in dress was a symbol of high status. It wasn’t long before women began wearing heels, too. Semmelhack explained it was (somewhat unsurprisingly) trendy for women to borrow from mens’ closets in the 1600s, and there they found high-heeled shoes. Never before in the history of mankind did everyone’s butts look so fantastic.

Persian, 17th century.

The heels themselves became gendered, with slender heels for women and blocky ones for men. Then around the middle of the 18th century, men started to abandon them. But there have been exceptions. John Lennon wore boots with heels, followed by plenty of glam rockers. “Elevator shoes” (with height-boosting insoles) provided a discreet option. And somehow the cowboy boot — which is definitely a high heeled shoe for guys — has stuck around as a symbol of rugged masculinity. As we reconsider notions of gender and its role in society, the heel is a prime example of how arbitrary definitions of gender can be.

Feel free to imagine Ron Swanson in any of the shoes below. If you find yourself in Toronto, the exhibition, titled “Standing Tall: The Curious History of Men in Heels,” runs from May 8, 2015, until May 2016.

English, c. 1690-1715. This pair of men’s mules features high flared heels in keeping with turn of the 18th century fashion. The red leather covering the high heels was meant to bring attention to them and also a conveyed a sense of continental sophistication as red heels were famously worn in the court of French King XIV.

American, Justin Boots, 20th century. The packer boot, like the more iconic pull-on cowboy boot, originated on the frontier and was worn for horseback riding. Evolving from 19th century lace-up boots, packers allowed wearers to customize the fit of the boot. The addition of the low-slung heel enabled the boot to stay stable in the stirrup.

The Gender Gap Persists, Even Among Hollywood’s Most Rich And Powerful

Female actors in Hollywood are earning less than their male counterparts. On Friday, The Daily Beast released information from the Sony hack which reveals that Jennifer Lawrence received a smaller portion of the back-end compensation for “American Hustle” than her male co-stars, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale and Jeremy Renner.

But according to a recent graphic released by The Washington Post (via the New York Film Academy), Lawrence is not alone. In the year 2013, the 10 highest earning male actors earned between $ 32 million and $ 75 million dollars, while the 10 highest earning female actors earned between $ 11 million and $ 33 million.

The Washington Post also notes that the charts points to other forms of discrimination faced by women in Hollywood:

The chart also suggests that age is a bigger factor for female actresses: Their median age is 34.8, while the median age for male actors is 46.5 … Part of the pay gap is undoubtedly due to women’s lower representation overall: Less than a third of speaking characters in the top 500 films between 2007 and 2012 were women, and only 10.7 percent of movies featured a balanced cast where half of the characters were female.

Earlier this month, leaked data also revealed a gender gap among Sony executives: of the 17 employees at the company who earn $ 1 million or more per year, only one is a woman.

“I Like Art by Men Better”: Gender by the Numbers at Art Basel Miami Beach

The last time I spoke with Micol Hebron, earlier this year, she was spearheading Gallery Tally, a project for which she and a small army of volunteers count the numbers of men and women artists on the rosters of art galleries. A week and a half ago, Hebron was in Miami for the art fairs, so she took the opportunity to do some more counting. Walking around Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB), she stopped at various booths to tally the gender breakdowns of the artists on view, engaging dealers, directors, and attendants in discussions along the way.

‘Genderqueer: And Other Gender Identities,’ Dave Naz Book, Explores The Gender Spectrum

A compelling new book showcases the faces of individuals identifying across the trans, genderqueer and gender nonconforming spectrum.

From photographer Dave Naz comes Genderqueer: And Other Gender Identities, a photo and essay book that he hopes will contribute to the emerging global conversation surrounding gender identity and the human condition, as well as show that not all individuals fit into the boxes society deems “correct.”

genderqueer2

The Huffington Post chatted with Naz this week about Genderqueer: And Other Gender Identities, his goals for this project and what readers can expect from the book.

The Huffington Post: Why did you decide this book was important?
Dave Naz: I went into the project photographing subjects that I felt had beauty that defied gender. This all started with Drew DeVeaux, Jiz Lee and Syd Blakovich. They also have great style, which makes for great images. Once I started started meeting people within this small community and hearing their stories, the idea for the book started to take shape. I think it’s important to put it out there and see if something clicks with the reader.

genderqueer

What are you trying to accomplish with this book?
I hope this book adds to the discussion about trans, gender-fluid and genderqueer individuals, as well as others who don’t identify with the gender they were assigned at birth.

Who contributed to make this book a reality?
Morty Diamond, Jiz Lee, Jenny Factor, Ignacio Rivera and Sarah Burghauser all wrote powerful essays about their lives. Those essays make up the book, along with the people who trusted me to photograph them. To make a book of this kind you have to have a unique publisher. Rare Bird / Barnacle believed in this project and made a beautiful book out of it.

genderqueer3

What do you hope people will take away from this project?
I want people to take away that it’s ok to be who you want to be and to be tolerant and understanding of others and how they present themselves. When I started this project five years ago, I had never heard the terms genderqueer, gender-fluid or gender-neutral. I hope others can learn from this book, as I did while I was making it.

Here here to learn more about Genderqueer: And Other Gender Identities. Naz’s exhibit “Identity” will also be at Coagual Curatorial Gallery in Chinatown, Los Angeles until Dec 20th.

Working With Gender: Wage Labor And Social Change In Southwestern Nigeria

Working With Gender: Wage Labor And Social Change In Southwestern Nigeria

Lindsay argues that wage labor became gendered as male because of transformations in the labor process, along with the concrete goals and values of individual Nigerian men and women, which were often influenced by indigenous and imported ideas about modernization. This book provides a view of modernization from a Nigerian, working-class perspective. It points to the tensions and engagement between the practical strategies and ideological assumptions of various colonial administrators and African workers. Gender in Chinese Music

Gender in Chinese Music

Village ritualists, international classical pianists, pop idols, and professional mourners — whether they perform in temples, on concert stages, or in TV shows, Chinese musicians continually express and negotiate their gendered identity in relation to those around them. Gender in Chinese Music draws together contributions from ethnomusicologists, anthropologists, and literary scholars to explore how music is implicated in changing notions of masculinity, femininity, and genders “in between” in Chinese culture. Individual chapters cover music cultures relating to diverse practitioners across space and time, from courting couples in China’s heartlands to ethnic minority singers from the borderlands, and from Ming-period courtesans to contemporary karaoke hostesses. The book also features interviews with musicians, music industry workers, and fans talking about gender. With its wide-ranging subject matter and interdisciplinary approach, Gender in Chinese Music will be the major resource for researchers and students interested in this important subject. Rachel Harris is a senior lecturer in ethnomusicology at SOAS, University of London, and author of several books on the music of Chinese Central Asia. Rowan Pease is a senior teaching fellow at SOAS, University of London, and editorial manager of The China Quarterly. Shzr Ee Tan is a lecturer in music at Royal Holloway, University of London, an active musician in the UK and Singapore, and author of Beyond “Innocence”: Amis Aboriginal Song in Taiwan as an Ecosystem.
