Einstein Fans Can Dress, and Smell, Like a Genius

IT’S ALL RELATIVE: Dressing like Albert Einstein is one thing, but now true devotees can smell like him, too.
Levi’s Vintage Clothing has introduced a limited run of a replica of the Nobel Prize winner’s favorite leather jacket — Levi’s Menlo Cossack Jacket and a complementary Einstein-inspired scent. Levi’s plunked down 110,500 pounds for the pungent, well-worn leather jacket at Christie’s Valuable Books and Manuscripts sale in July 2016. At the time of the Christie’s sale, specialist Thomas Venning commented about the aroma of the pipe smoking-physicist favorite jacket — more than 60 years after his death. The esteemed scientist who became a U.S. Citizen in 1940 often appeared in photographs at the height of his fame in the mid-Thirties wearing his Menlo Cossack.
There are now 500 sheep leather pieces of the Italian-made piece and each is hand numbered. The Brooklyn-based perfume house D.S. & Durga developed the Levi’s-approved bottled scent — a blend of burley pipe tobacco, papyrus manuscripts, and vintage leather. Consumers who buy the $ 1,200 jacket and GWP at Levi’s online store or at select locations will also receive a No. 97 auction paddle as a wink at the one that was used to bid on the actual

Original Penguin Bets on Genius, Wale to Remain Relevant With Customers

Original Penguin, like many other brands, is trying to figure out how to speak to the Millennial consumer in an authentic way. According to Kristin Dicunzolo, the vice president of marketing and communications at Original Penguin, working with Genius as its only media outlet for the entire season was a way to do that.
“In the past we’ve used a variety of media partners, but we wanted to go all in with Genius to have 100 percent of the shared voice,” said Dicunzolo, who added that it was important for the brand to work with a platform outside of the fashion space.
Genius, which was founded in 2009, primarily focused on publishing lyrics to rap songs — it was originally called Rap Genius. The platform has since expanded its content — lyrics, news, videos, artist interviews, etc. — to cover all music genres.
In 2016 Genius signed a deal with Spotify, the music streaming service, to integrate annotated lyrics into the music playback experience. Brands are beginning to play with selling merchandise on these platforms. Pat McGrath recently launched a line of beauty products with pop star Maggie Lindemann over Spotify.

This Woman’s Solution To Finding Nudes On Bae’s Phone Is Genius

Savage.

On Monday, Twitter user @bonnntle posed an important question to the social media site:

Rebaneilwe, a 19-year-old from South Africa, saw the question and was struck by an immediate, funny and pretty petty response.

“It was off the top of my head,” Rebaneilwe told HuffPost. “[I] have never done that in my life. [It was] purely hypothetical.”

Though she came up with her advice spontaneously, people on Twitter were certainly intrigued by it.

Rebaneilwe did admit that some of her past experiences did influence her response, however.

“Shady things have happened to me. Men have deceived me many times so I’ve become a little more petty,” she said.

Moe & Me: Encounters with Moe Norman, Golf’s Mysterious Genius

Moe & Me: Encounters with Moe Norman, Golf’s Mysterious Genius

Spotlighting Moe Norman, a golfer admired by Tiger Woods himself, this memoir by a sportswriter who knew Moe Norman for 40 years details Moe’s unique and controversial life. The record investigates how, despite winning almost every title in Canada and having his name celebrated in golf circles around the globe, Norman failed to make a mark in the wider world of golf yet still referred to himself as “the happiest guy on two feet.” His uncommon swing, mannerisms, and lifestyle are explored, illustrating how he played very quickly, never took a practice swing, often repeated phrases when talking, and lived in motel rooms most of his life. Norman’s crippling insecurity and introversion are revealed, documenting how these conditions kept him from publicly succeeding at the highest levels of play. Penned by a sports journalist who knew the subject for 40 years, this study examines Moe Norman’s utterly exceptional technique, his character, how he lived his life well in spite of his significant handicaps, and what this most sensitive and peculiar man meant to those who knew him.

Here’s A Genius Way To Respond To Anti-Semitism

Combat anti-Semitic graffiti by getting creative.

Since Donald Trump’s presidential election victory, there’s been a reported rise in bigoted and racist crimes across the country.

But here’s one way to react if you spot a swastika daubed on a nearby building.

Just strategically add a few lines and boxes and the threatening Nazi motif suddenly becomes Microsoft’s iconic Windows 95 logo:

Redditor that_tim_guy first shared the above photograph online in 2013, although it’s unclear exactly where it was taken. The Huffington Post has reached out for further details.

The image began circulating again over the weekend in the wake of the increase in hate crimes against minority groups.

While vandalism is illegal in most places and people obviously shouldn’t even have to think of ways of camouflaging prejudiced graffiti in the first place, it does show how it’s possible for love to trump hate ― even on a seemingly microcosmic scale.

Shakespeare at 400, Jack London at 100: Genius Lives

In William Shakespeare’s comedy, “As You Like It, a traveler named Jaques waxes poetical in lines that have achieved literary immortality.

“All the world’s a stage,” he says. “And all the men and women merely players;/ They have their exits and their entrances,/And one man in his time plays many parts.”

Three hundred years later, Jack London, another melancholy traveler, might well have spoken nearly the same lines and meant them to be about himself. Indeed, he once observed that he had half-a-dozen different “selves” and proved it in a short, brilliant life that spanned the end of the nineteenth and the start of twentieth century.

A writer, vagabond, sailor, farmer, public speaker, playwright, playboy, war correspondent, and a Bernie Sanders-like socialist, Jack London was born John Griffith Chaney in San Francisco in 1876. He died in Glen Ellen, California in 1916 at the age of 40. (London ran for mayor of Oakland twice and twice lost.)

Around the world this year, theatergoers and thespians, are celebrating the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare in 1616, his age unknown.

There’s another big literary anniversary afoot, as well. In 2016, fans of Jack London, one of the most popular American authors of his day, are celebrating the 100th anniversary of his death.

Both anniversaries are well worth celebrating.

Indeed, if Shakespeare’s plays illuminate the Elizabethan Age better than the plays of any other writer, Jack London’s novels, including “The Iron Heel,” illuminate the Gilded Age and its aftermath better than most of the novels of his contemporaries, including those of Henry James.

To many, it will sound like hyperbole, but to the faithful London was the Shakespeare of his day. Like the Bard, he wrote tragedies as well as comedies.

Like the Bard, he was exceedingly prolific; in 17 years be wrote more than 50 books. Like Shakespeare, he created immortal character: Buck, the dog who devolves into a wolf; White Fang, the wolf who evolves into a dog; Wolf Larsen, the brutal sea captain who reads Shakespeare and analyzes his most famous character, Hamlet.

There’s also Martin Eden, the sailor who becomes a famous writer. And perhaps London’s best character of all: himself. As the literary critic, Alfred Kazin famously observed, “the greatest story Jack London ever wrote was the story he lived.”

For one hundred years, biographers have tried repeatedly to capture his elusive identity and to fix the nature of his nature as well as the nature of his art. Dozens and dozens of biographies have been written about him, including “The Mystery of Jack London” by his friend Georgia Loring Bamford.

Rose Wilder Lane beat Bamford to the typewriter. “Life and Jack London,” her fictionalized biography, in which she borrows from Jung and Freud, appeared in “Sunset Magazine” in eight installments in 1917 and 1918.

More biographies are on the way; conferences are forthcoming.

Biographers know more about London than they do about Shakespeare; thousands of London’s letters survive, along with voluminous documents, though as in the case of Shakespeare there’s no known birth certificate. With London as with Shakespeare mysteries abound.

Fans may never know all they would like to know about London’s biological father, William Henry Chaney, his mother, Flora, or what it meant to be a white boy raised as he was in the Bay Area’s African American community by an African American ex-slave named Virginia Prentice.

The evidence suggests that London felt like an orphan in the world and that he also had an abiding fear of falling into a kind of abyss, both physical and psychological, that derived in part from the poverty and emotional insecurity of his early years.

London himself embraced mystery and in his best work produced poetry worthy of Shakespeare. “Men, mere motes of light and sparkle,” he wrote in “The Sea-Wolf,” “ride their steeds of wood and steel through the heart of the mystery, groping their way blindly through the unseen.”

Like the archetypical man that Shakespeare’s Jaques describes in “As You Like it,” London was “Jealous in honor, /sudden and quick in quarrel,/ Seeking the bubble reputation.”

One hundred years after his death, the bubble hasn’t burst yet.

Jonah Raskin is the editor of “The Radical Jack London: Writings on War and Revolution.”

Hip Hop Genius

Hip Hop Genius

Many educators already know that hip-hop can be a powerful tool for engaging students. But can hip-hop save our schools? In Hip Hop Genius, Sam Seidel introduces an iteration of hip-hop education that goes far beyond the usual approach of studying rap music as classroom content and looks instead at deeply honoring the knowledge of urban students. Seidel lays out a vision for how hip-hop’s genius-the resourceful creativity and swagger that took it from a local phenomenon to a global force-can lead to a fundamental remix of the way we think of teaching, school design, and leadership. Through stories about the professional rapper who founded the first hip-hop high school and the aspiring artists currently enrolled there, Hip Hop Genius invites readers to think outside the (boom)box about what hip-hop education can mean and to consider the implications that a broader definition of hip-hop education could have on their teaching and learning experiences. This book is for all of the educators in need of new solutions and all the hip-hop heads who know hip-hop is far more than music. It is for everyone who refuses to watch brilliant young people slip through the cracks and is down to take action. View Sam’s YouTube trailer for the book here

You may not know its name, but we know you’ve seen the classic squiggly design that’s most recognizable from paper cups.

Yeah, you know what we’re talking about — that purple and turquoise pattern that hits you with giant pangs of nostalgia. The “Jazz” design began showing up on paper cups about 23 years ago. Recently, an AMA request came in from a Reddit user who wanted to know who the designer was. That pushed reporter Thomas Gounley of Missouri’s Springfield News-Leader to do some digging.

After much investigation, Gounley was successful and last week he discovered that 50-year-old Gina Ekiss, who lives in Aurora, Mississippi, is the iconic design’s creator, according to his piece in the News-Leader. Ekiss, who’s now a custom frame shop manager at a Hobby Lobby, was met with Internet acclaim as the discovery spread across social media outlets.

“I’m just still pretty stunned about the whole deal,” Ekiss told ABC News in reaction to her Internet stardom. “I’m thrilled that it’s still popular.”

http://solojazz.tumblr.com/post/121874087614/meet-gina-the-designer-of-the-solo-jazz-cup

The path to finding Ekiss wasn’t an easy one. The reporter only knew the designer’s first name as well as the fact that she had worked for the Sweetheart Cup Company, which was later bought by Solo Cup Company. He eventually found a tweet from a person claiming to be the creator’s daughter, according to his article. After looking through public records and coming across Ekiss’ name and address, Gounley drove to her house and confirmed his suspicions.

Turns out, Ekiss had created Jazz as part of an internal cup design contest at the Sweetheart Cup Company in 1989, after outside design firms had came up with unsatisfying results. Ekiss said that Jazz was among three or four different designs she had submitted, and its colors are just ones she felt meshed well.

“I just did turquoise, or teal, because that’s one of my favorite colors,” she told ABC News. “I wanted another overlapping color that would work well together. I just liked the purple with it and everybody seemed pleased with that.”

The 50-year-old still keeps a few products with the Jazz design in her house, and says it’s “insane” that her artwork has become such a memorable part of ’90s culture.

Phew! We can all breathe easy now that this pressing mystery’s finally been solved.

A Guy Secretly Recorded An Argument With His Parents In 1985; Some Genius Has Now Animated It

For 16 years, from the age of 12 to 28, Mike Cohen secretly recorded his interactions with his parents. Years later, Cohen’s friend, Rodd Perry, decided to take one of these vintage recordings and animate it.

The result is pure gold.

In the video above, which has racked up more than 230,000 views this week, watch the drama unfold when Cohen’s parents walk into his room and give him an earful. The audio in the clip is said to have been recorded in 1985, during one of Cohen’s visits home during college.

In a post on Reddit this week, Perry explained that the video was his “first attempt” at animation. He said he used both Photoshop and Final Cut to create the viral clip.

Genius Makeup Artist Transforms Himself Into Kim Kardashian, Dakota Johnson, Other Female Celebs

Paolo Ballesteros, a 32-year-old Filipino actor, model and makeup artist, wowed the Internet last year with his jaw-dropping ability to transform himself into seemingly any female celebrity under the sun — with little more than some deftly-applied makeup.

Ballesteros is making waves yet again this month with several new transformations. He made himself up as Kylie Jenner and as the newly-blond Kim Kardashian, as well as Dakota Johnson, the star of “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Ballesteros, host of the Filipino variety show “Eat Bulaga,” told The Huffington Post in an email Tuesday that he started experimenting with celebrity makeup transformations after watching tutorials on YouTube. He made a few attempts, he said, and was “surprised” at how quickly he took to it.

Over the past few months, Ballesteros has transformed himself into several female celebrities. They include Cate Blanchett…

Ballesteros told HuffPost that the hardest part of his metamorphoses is getting the nose just right.

“My nose is smaller and shorter [than most celebrities],” he said. “It took me a while to figure out how to do it. By drawing new nostrils, it made my nose more pointy or bigger.”

Here’s How To Get Every Last Bit Of Peanut Butter Out Of The Jar (This Is Genius)

The worst, worst, worst, worst, worst thing about peanut butter is the construction of its jar. Nothing else is bad about peanut butter; it’s one of the world’s most divine edibles. It satisfies a salty craving, it makes for exquisite sandwiches and it can help keep you full for long periods of time.

But, when you reach the last licks of a jar (which is devastating on its own), the remnants of the nutty spread are near impossible to wrangle. No utensil is agile enough to scrape the remaining bits, and not even a toddler’s hand is slim enough to fit all the way through the jar. In most cases, this quandary results in tossing out the jar while there’s still some perfectly good peanut butter inside. It doesn’t feel right, but it seems there are no other options.

Worst. Thing. Ever.

But there are alternatives to discarding the jar while there’s still a bit of nutty goodness leftover. In fact, there are two tricks. We’ve already discussed overnight oats, which soak up the peanut butter into a mixture of oats, milk and other delectable toppings to craft a perfect breakfast. But overnight oats require patience and a bit of elbow grease. For instant gratification, saw the jar in half. Really!

crack open pb
Facebook/Chandler Bolt

Hallelujah, right? It’s so simple, so obvious in hindsight. Just locate an X ACTO knife or a regular kitchen knife and carefully slice the jar in half on a cutting board. Be careful not to scrape your hands on the rough plastic edges. Of course, this trick won’t work with glass jars (sad). You could smash it against a wall, but then you’d be eating more glass shards than peanut butter, and from a medical perspective that just isn’t safe.

Free Books: Marketing Genius or Devaluation of Writers?

2014-07-29-Buymybookitsfree_r.jpg

Heard at a recent garage sale: “I always take free stuff even when I’m not sure I want it. I mean, it’s FREE; I can always throw it out!

Contemporary culture seems to have a conflicted relationship with free. People will hip-check each other to get to a neighborhood “free box” first, then get suspicious when eager salesmen dangle promotional freebies to close a sale. We all love a free meal but will still wonder what’s wrong with business that the restaurant is offering it. We can rationalize downloading music without payment, yet barely blink when art is auctioned for millions on the basis of “perceived artistic value.”

Then there are books, given away by the boatload in “free book promotions” in hopes of snagging that ever-more desirable demographic: the e-book reader. As the format surpasses all others in global book sales, the seduction of this burgeoning audience has become the mission statement of all book sellers, including indie authors, making Amazon’s brainchild promotion the Holy Grail.

To the uninitiated, the “free book promotion” is a strategy whereby writers offer their e-books free-of-charge for a number of days during their Kindle Select enrollment period. The objective is to entice readers in hopes they’ll download your book, leave a review, stir up positive word-of-mouth, then come back to buy your other books that aren’t free. This presumes, of course, that you have other books; it also presumes those planned objectives are met.

Are they?

Depends who you talk to. Some authors report getting thousands of free downloads, winning higher Amazon rankings and heightened name awareness as a result. Others tout similar stats but lament the cost of sites like BookBub and others that charge $ 200+ to promote those free promotions. Still others contend that the strategy’s value has peaked, as the sheer glut of free product has lowered incentive for readers to ever pay for books (despite e-books already being cheaper than other formats). Writers themselves are conflicted.

I asked indie author, Martin Crosbie, who’s had tremendous success with his books, particularly his novel, My Temporary Life, his view of the strategy:

“If I had not had the ability to offer my book for free I would not have found the readers I have. Reduced and free pricing has been the difference for me between connecting with hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of readers each month as opposed to just a handful. Hopefully some of these tried and true methods will remain effective for a little while as we all scramble to increase our readership, because really, we’re not just selling books. We’re building our reader base; that’s where our real focus is.”

Most would agree, yet some believe the proliferation of freebies has permanently altered the landscape, both in the perceived value of writers and their work and the mindset of readers who’ve become habituated to not paying for books. Literary agent, Jill Corcoran, makes that point in her piece, “The Devaluation of Writers, By Writers“:

“I get it, we all want our books to be read… getting your foot in the door/getting your e-book on anyone and everyone’s e-reader is the first step to [hopefully] selling these buyers your second book. BUT, if your self-pubbed book is free, and, according to bookgorilla, John Green’s THE FAULT OF OUR STARS e-book is worth $ 3.99, then all of us in publishing will need to downsize our houses, our food bill, our lifestyles because unless you are selling a heck of a lot of books, at $ 3.99 or 1/8th of $ 0.99 or at the golden ‘price’ of FREE, we have all just devalued ourselves to a point of below the already pitiful American minimum wage.” [Emphasis added.]

And what about the readers? Where are they in all this? Seems they’re as conflicted as everyone else! Some readers have been quoted as saying they’re not likely to read all the free books on their Kindles, having hundreds they’ve never even opened; others admit they haven’t gone back to buy from writers from whom they’ve downloaded free books. Some say they don’t worry about the quality of what they’ve downloaded because “they were free… I can always delete them”; others say they do prefer better books but can’t rationalize paying for them when so much free product is available.

My opinion? I’ll see your contradictions and raise you some!

One can understand scrambling for readership any way possible; as an indie author marketing my own novel, I get it! But beyond the loss of income, there’s also — at least in my opinion — that issue of quality. With countless sites built on the free/bargain book paradigm, product demand has increased exponentially. Which means for every high-quality writer like Crosbie, there are scores of lesser writers flooding the marketplace with poorly written and produced books that still find ready readership more focused on cost than quality. That bodes ill.

And, frankly, the strategy is limited. If readers don’t return to pay full price for your book, you’re out (and why would they if they’ve already gotten it free?). If readers download that free book but never read it, they won’t be talking about it; hence, no word of mouth. And if you don’t yet have other books to sell during a free promotion… well, that’s as far as it all goes until, maybe, you do.

Which is why writers are endlessly admonished to not spend too much time on marketing but “write, write and WRITE MORE!!” And while it’s always important for writers to write (and when you’re self-marketing a book, balancing those two tasks can be formidable!), too often the rather vigorous push to do so suggests that cranking out book after book is the paramount goal, ratcheting pressure to the point that some writers actually question if “it’s OK to forego professional editing just so I can get this new book up before my promotion.”

NO. It’s not. Not ever. But if the strategy bullies any writer into cutting corners and delivering sub-par books to feed the beast (and we all know there are lots of those out there), it has become counter-productive.

Donna Tartt took over ten years to write her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Goldfinch (and it’s only her third book). The great Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, published only one book in her lifetime (albeit, a masterpiece). Many of our most respected authors take years to hone their finely crafted literary works before ever thinking of entering them into the marketplace. Unless one is satisfied just cranking out unspectacular books, indie writers should hold to the same literary standards. Because, ultimately, it’s the quality of what we create that endures, that makes us truly successful writers, not our ranking, not how many free downloads we get; not how many books we post on our Amazon page.

And lastly, why should writers be expected to give their work away on such an expected and persistent basis? Writing is our commodity, our trade. Many of us have spent years honing our craft and gaining the necessary experience to attract meaningful work and appropriate remuneration. Other skilled professionals aren’t expected to repetitively work for free, why should writers? Bestselling author Dean Wesley Smith takes on that question with so many common sense points in his Killing Sacred Cows series, I’ll just leave you with this link: Killing the Top Ten Sacred Cows of Indie Publishing: #9… You Must Sell Books Cheaply. Once you’re done here, go read it; it’s very illuminating!

I remain an optimist, though, hopeful that the more judicious and market-savvy amongst us will realize there’s something culturally essential in supporting quality writers and their work… and with marketing dollars! Until then, I hope readers will, both, enjoy their freebies and repay the favor by fulfilling their end of the deal: reading the book, spreading the word, leaving a thoughtful review… and paying full price for their next one!

The Boy Genius and the Mogul

The Boy Genius and the Mogul

The world remembers Edison, Ford, and the Wright Brothers. But what about Philo T. Farnsworth, the inventor of television, an innovation that did as much as any other to shape the twentieth century? That question lies at the heart of The Boy Genius and the Mogul, Daniel Stashower’s captivating chronicle of television’s true inventor, the battle he faced to capitalize on his breakthrough, and the powerful forces that resulted in the collapse of his dreams. The son of a Mormon farmer, Farnsworth was born in 1906 in a single-room log cabin on an isolated homestead in Utah. The Farnsworth family farm had no radio, no telephone, and no electricity. Yet, motivated by the stories of scientists and inventors he read about in the science magazines of the day, young Philo set his sights on becoming an inventor. By his early teens, Farnsworth had become an inveterate tinkerer, able to repair broken farm equipment when no one else could.
