Global Fashion Agenda and IFM Join Forces to Advance Sustainability in Fashion

PARIS — Denmark and France are aligning their efforts on the sustainability in fashion front.
Copenhagen-based Global Fashion Agenda and Paris fashion school, Institut Français de la Mode, or the IFM, on Wednesday signed a memorandum outlining their commitment to establishing more partnership agreements to accelerate initiatives in the field.
The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding took place at the opening of the Economic Forum, with as its backdrop French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Denmark. Present at the event were French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire; Dominique Jacomet, dean of the IFM; and Pascal Morand, executive president of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode.
“Confronting those global challenges requires a united effort,” said Eva Kruse, chief executive officer of Global Fashion Agenda, a leadership forum on fashion sustainability which organizes the annual Copenhagen Fashion Summit as well as the yearly industry report, Pulse of the Fashion Industry. “The French fashion industry is one of the world’s most powerful and influential, which is why we already work closely with sustainability pioneer and leading French luxury group Kering, but signing this MoU is vital to accomplishing broader changes in French fashion companies and to creating concrete initiatives to educate and guide industry

Loretta Caponi Maps Out Global Expansion Plan

The Loretta Caponi brand is seeking global expansion.
After introducing a tailored ready-to-wear line for spring 2018 to mark its 50th anniversary, as an evolution of its handcrafted innerwear, loungewear and home collections, the Florence-based firm born out of an artisanal atelier is banking on profitable yet sustainable growth.
“There is quite a lot going on: The brand is extremely niche and we wish to expand that niche of customers, without compromising, keeping the exclusivity of our products, not expanding like wild fire, selecting relevant locations instead, in order to keep our target clientele and keeping up with the sartorial products we’ve always offered,” said Guido Conti Caponi, chief executive officer of the brand, mapping out organic, slow-paced growth.
The expansion plan includes holding several trunk shows in key cities worldwide, setting up pop-up shops at locations “where we already have a following,” as well as expanding the network of retailers.
Conti Caponi explained that the aim of trunk shows is “to meet with private clients and possibly retailers in their own countries, so that we can help local retailers in building brand awareness and draw curiosity around us.”
“Experiencing customers’ feedback is really gratifying and has given us the courage to keep growing these

Half of Global Online Traffic to Luxury E-commerce Sites Are From Where?

RUSH HOUR: SEMrush, the search engine marketing-solutions provider, crunched data of global consumer traffic to the top fashion e-commerce web sites and found that half of the visitors are from the U.S., while 10 percent hail from Russia and about 8 percent from the U.K. And when the firm looked at when consumers searched for nearby fashion retailers, December had the highest traffic. Additionally, SEMrush found that the top searches for nearby retailers included Macy’s, Foot Locker, DSW, Nordstrom, Zara and the Gap. The latest data follows an earlier report from the firm that found the most-searched fashion item was a “white dress.”
In a separate e-commerce trends report from SEMrush, the firm noted that direct traffic to web sites garners the largest portion of e-commerce traffic, while mobile continues to gain more share. Meanwhile, desktop traffic “prevails for all the industries analyzed in the study.” Researchers at the firm revealed that e-commerce firms need to improve their ability to facilitate consumer reviews as it remains the most popular search engine results pages, or SERP. The company’s analysis was based on 8,000 of the most trafficked global e-commerce sites. And the report examined traffic patterns, marketing, ad size, promotions and the emotional triggers of

Mushroom-Made Fashion Authority Aniela Hoitink Talks Global Change-Sparked Innovation

CAPPING FAST FASHION: Mention of mushrooms conjure all sorts of images, but for Dutch textile designer Aniela Hoitink mushroom mycelium can be a course for fashion.
Among this year’s winners of The Global Change awards, Hoitink is taking part in an incubator program in New York this week. The crash course is made possible through Accenture, KTH Innovation of Sweden and the H&M Foundation. Other winners include Agraloop, which makes sustainable textiles from leftover crop harvests; Swerea, which separates cotton and polyester blends for a new textile fiber; Algalife, which transforms algae into eco-friendly dye; Resortecs, which creates a dissolvable thread and the Early Bird winner Tandem Repeat, which uses self-healing textiles to reduce garment waste.
Four years ago Hoinik started working with mycelium — mushroom roots, but it took two years to figure out a way to create a flexible material. The trick was to figure out how to avoid the brittleness that is a result of drying it. The second step was how to make materials from it without having a standard supply chain. Combined with 3-D technology, they’ve found a way to produce custom-made clothes out of this new natural fiber without the need to cut and sew. Once

H&M Names Five Winners of Global Change Award

PARIS — Hennes & Mauritz AB named the five winners of its Global Change Award, and asked the public to vote online for one of them to help split the 1 million euro prize.
The fashion industry, including fast-fashion groups that offer inexpensive clothing at cutthroat prices, is under pressure to rein in waste as public awareness of environmental issues gains ground.
Winners were: Crop-A-Porter, which makes textile from food crop harvest leftovers; Algae Apparel, which uses algae as a dye; Smart Stitch, which makes dissolvable thread; The Regenerator, which separates cotton and polyester blends for recycling, and Fungi Fashion, which makes clothes from decomposing mushroom roots.
“All industries need to re-think, innovate and challenge status quo,” said H&M chief executive officer and board member Karl-Johan Persson.
The company noted that applicants offered a broad range of ideas, but that most of the solutions came from outside the fashion industry.
“This year’s Global Change Award winners are about disrupting business-as-usual to help transition us to a low-carbon and circular economy,” noted Vikram Widge, who heads climate finance and policy for the International Finance Corporation, and was a member of the award’s jury.

Street Signs: Louis Vuitton x Supreme Stirs Global Frenzy, but a Well-Managed One

Megacrowds — many destined to be disappointed — greeted the long-awaited arrival of the Louis Vuitton x Supreme collaboration in pop-up shops around the world on Friday.
Just as Michael Burke, chairman and chief executive officer of Louis Vuitton, previously told WWD, the brand revealed the location of the pop-ups on Instagram only one day, or sometimes hours, before the release.
“There will be no marketing and no press release. We won’t be pandering to the customer. It’s all about peer-to-peer communication. We provide a very minimum amount of information and let the people judge us from there,” Burke said.
As reported, the collection, unveiled at Paris Men’s Fashion Week in January, is being sold exclusively through eight pop-ups in Paris, London, Miami, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Beijing, Seoul and Sydney. With the exception of the Miami pop-up, located in an exhibition space on the third floor of Vuitton’s Design District store, the stores have no prior connection with either brand. The Sydney pop-up is located at 95 Roscoe Street in Bondi Beach, while the Tokyo space opened in the Minami-Aoyama district, where more than 7,000 people lined up outside starting from the late hours of Thursday night.

Slick Rick Praises The First-Ever Global Hip-Hop Day

June 8 marks Global Hip-Hop Day, during which we celebrate the global and cultural impact of the genre that was started some 40 years ago

The first-ever event, which is held in conjunction with the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, the office of The Bronx Borough President, and New York radio station Hot 97, will take place in the Bronx and will commemorate hip-hop’s ability to unite people and create positive impact around the globe.

During the day, there will be a public proclamation and unveiling of Hip-Hop Boulevard at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, which is the birthplace of hip-hop and home of legendary hip-hop pioneer Kool Herc.

The special ceremony will also recognize Fat Joe, Slick Rick, Kool Herc and The Lox as this year’s of ICON honorees for their vast musical contributions.

For legendary rapper Slick Rick, Global Hip-Hop Day will help solidify the future of the genre’s place in society.

“It’s a good thing, because hip-hop is due recognition,” Rick said in an interview with HuffPost. “And it’s addressing the influence it has over modern day youth and the future of modern society.”

The English-born MC ― who’s known for his charismatic style and vivid storytelling lyrics ― rose to hip-hop prominence in the 80s with the release of his critically acclaimed debut 1988 album, “The Great Adventures of Slick Rick.”

As one of New York’s longstanding hip-hop radio stations, Hot 97’s SVP/Market Manager of Emmis New York, Charlie Morgan said that the station aims to celebrate the extension of hip-hop’s global reach.

“We want to both honor the origins of hip-hop music and the hip-hop culture as being born and bred in New York City, specifically the Bronx,” Morgan told HuffPost. “At the same time, we want to celebrate the global reach and impact of this native New York art form. Hot 97 is proud of our heritage and role as the first hip-hop radio station, as well as the role we are playing in the global expansion of this music with the international expansion of Summer Jam and global distribution of Hot 97 online.”

Rick said he’d like for hip-hop to unite fans on topics such as foreign affairs.

“It could be a pulpit for the modern day youth to express its opinions about issues ― global warming, foreign affairs ― as far as how to get along without all the unrest and stuff like that,” he said.

French TV Host Plays Cruel Joke On Gay Men And Sparks Global Backlash

A French television presenter is facing outrage after poking fun at gay people who responded to his spoof of a dating ad on his show.

On Monday’s episode of “Touche Pas à Mon Poste” (or “Don’t Touch My TV”), host Cyril Hanouna revealed that he’d posted an online ad claiming to be a bisexual man called Jean-José, the BBC reports. Jean-José was described in the ad as being “very sporty and well endowed.”

A clip from “Touche Pas à Mon Poste” shows Hanouna speaking in a snarky, somewhat effeminate tone as he chats with a man who replied to his ad. He’d also used a shirtless photo of filmmaker and YouTube personality Max Emerson in the ad. Emerson, 28, recently made waves when Instagram photos of him and his boyfriend, Andrés Camilo Hernandez, attending a military ball went viral.

The segment quickly landed Hanouna in hot water. Nicolas Noguier of Le Refuge, a France-based LGBTQ advocacy group, told the BBC that one of Hanouna’s guests was “distressed” by the prank since he had yet to come out as gay to his parents. “We were devastated by his tears and his fear of being found out by his parents and those around him,” Noguier said, according to the report.

The controversy prompted a number of high-profile advertisers, including Chanel, Nestlé and Disneyland Paris, to yank advertisements that aired during the primetime show. (BuzzFeed published a running list of companies that have pulled their advertisements from the show.)

On Wednesday, GLAAD announced it was joining the Association of French LGBT Journalists in launching an online petition in both English and French asking supporters to speak out against Hanouna’s actions. Thus far, France’s Conseil Supérieur de l’Audiovisuel, which regulates television content, had received more than 25,000 complaints in response to “Touche Pas à Mon Poste,” according to a GLAAD press release.

“This show not only humiliates gay people in the cruelest of styles, but glorifies a dangerous practice that continues to put gay men in harm’s way in France and around the world,” GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis said in an email statement. Her organization, she said, urged “our global community to speak out against the use of online dating profiles and apps to entrap and harm innocent LGBTQ people.”

Emerson echoed those sentiments, calling the unauthorized use of his photos “entirely unacceptable.” Earlier in the week, he blasted the move on Twitter.

It isn’t the first time that Hanouna’s actions have made headlines. According to The Local, an English language French news site, viewers were angered by an October 2016 episode in which a “Touche Pas à Mon Poste” guest kissed a woman’s breasts on the air. In addition, the host frequently mentions homosexuality, “often to laugh about it in a disparaging manner,” on the program, according to the report

For his part, Hanouna said he was “hurt” by the allegations of homophobia, noting it was “everything he had been fighting against for years,” according to the BBC

Young Royals Launch Global Academy, Take Part in Radio Talk Show

ROYALS ON THE RADIO: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined Prince Harry to launch a school called the Global Academy in West London on Thursday.
The royal trio headed to the school in Hayes, London, met with students and took part in a Heart radio breakfast show, broadcast from the Global Academy. The talk was held with students — and Spice Girl Emma Bunton — and focused on topics pertaining to mental health.
During the talk, the duchess said the first conversations about mental health should start when children are young. She suggested starting “these conversations from a much earlier age but through play, even if their language hasn’t yet developed.”
She also addressed loneliness: “Yes, it is lonely at times and you do feel quite isolated but actually so many other mothers are going through exactly what you are going through. It is being brave enough…to reach out to those around you.”

Thanks to cheap travel and easy communication, immigrants everywhere stay in intimate contact with their native countries, creating powerful cross-border networks. In Borderless Economics, Robert Guest, The Economist''s Business Editor, travels through dozens of countries and 44 American states, observing how these networks create wealth, spread ideas and foster innovation. He shows how: * Brainy Indians in America collaborate with brainy Indians in India to build fridges and 0 houses * Young Chinese study in the West and then return home (where they''re known as sea turtles), infecting China with ideas that will eventually turn it democratic * The so-called brain drain – the flow of educated migrants from poorcountries to rich ones – actually reduces global poverty *America''s unique ability to attract and absorb migrants lets it tap into the energy of all the world''s diaspora networks. So despite its current woes, if the United States keeps its borders open, it will remain the world''s most powerful nation indefinitely. With on-the-ground reporting from Asia, Africa, Europe and even Idaho, this book examines how migration, for the all the disruption it causes, makes the world wealthier and happier.

The Global 1989

The Global 1989

1989 signifies the collapse of Soviet communism and the end of the Cold War, a moment generally recognized as a triumph for liberal democracy and when capitalism became global. The Global 1989 challenges these ideas. An international group of prominent scholars investigate the mixed, paradoxical and even contradictory outcomes engendered by these events, unravelling the intricacies of this important moment in world history. Although the political, economic and cultural orders generated have, for the most part, been an improvement on what was in place before, this has not always been clear cut: 1989 has many meanings, many effects and multiple trajectories. This volume leads the way in defining how 1989 can be assessed both in terms of its world historical impact and in terms of its contribution to the shape of contemporary world politics.

Wild Fire: Global Prospects For Revisiti

Wild Fire: Global Prospects For Revisiti

More than half a century after the advent of the nuclear age, is the world approaching a tipping point that will unleash an epidemic of nuclear proliferation? Today many of the building blocks of a nuclear arsenalscientific and engineering expertise, precision machine tools, software, design informationare more readily available than ever before. The nuclear pretensions of so-called rogue states and terrorist organizations are much discussed. But how firm is the resolve of those countries that historically have chosen to forswear nuclear weapons? A combination of changes in the international environment could set off a domino effect, with countries scrambling to develop nuclear weapons so as not to be left behindor to develop nuclear hedge capacities that would allow them to build nuclear arsenals relatively quickly, if necessary. The Nuclear Tipping Point examines the factors, both domestic and transnational, that shape nuclear policy. The authors, distinguished scholars and foreign policy practitioners with extensive government experience, develop a framework for understanding why certain countries may originally have decided to renounce nuclear weaponsand pinpoint some more recent country-specific factors that could give them cause to reconsider. Case studies of eight long-term stalwarts of the nonproliferation regimeEgypt, Germany, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Syria, Turkey, and Taiwanflesh out this framework and show how even these countries might be pushed over the edge of a nuclear tipping point. The authors offer prescriptions that would both prevent such countries from reconsidering their nuclear option and avert proliferation by others. The stakes are enormous and successis far from assured. To keep the tipping point beyond reach, the authors argue, the international community will have to act with unity, imagination, and strength, and Washington''s leadership will be essential. Contributors include Leon Feurth, George Washington University; Ellen Laipson, Stimson Center; Thomas W. Lippman, Middle East Institute; Jenifer Mackby, Center for Strategic and International Studies; Derek J. Mitchell, Center for Strategic and International Studies; Jonathan D. Pollack, U.S. Naval War College; Walter B. Slocombe, Caplin and Drysdale; and Tsuyoshi Sunohara, Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Jeffrey Rudes Prepares New Men’s Collection for Global Ride

Jeffrey Rudes now has a flagship store in Manhattan’s SoHo section for his fledgling brand of luxury men’s wear, but it’s unlikely to remain the sole brick-and-mortar home for it.
Rudes, often cited as one of the patriarchs of the premium denim business for his founding and stewardship of the J Brand, opened his 5,800-square-foot store at 57 Greene Street Thursday after a presentation of his spring collection and opening party on Wednesday night. Even as he and his team struggled with last-minute details for the presentation and opening, he was already open to discussion of what’s next for what, until now, has been a self-financed enterprise.
“We expect to have a global, multichannel retail footprint,” he told WWD, “but first we want to get it right in our store and on our Web site. Would we use franchisees or finance the rollout internally? It’s too soon to say, but if I’m thinking in terms of a global rollout of the brand, I’m not going to be doing it myself.”
Rudes, who stuck to a wholesale, albeit global, model at J Brand, said “there’s been a little buzz created in the wholesale world. But, as with retail, first things first. We’re thinking in

Gucci’s Chime For Change Teams up With Global Citizen

In an effort to raise awareness about girls’ and women’s issues around the globe, the Gucci-led Chime For Change has secured a long-term partnership with Global Citizen, a group striving to end extreme poverty by 2030.
To that end, Gucci and Chime For Change have signed on as the presenting partners for this year’s Global Citizen Festival that will be held on Sept. 26 in New York on Central Park’s Great Lawn. Thousands are expected to catch performances by Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Pearl Jam and Coldplay.
Beyoncé will be right at home, and not just because she and Jay Z live in TriBeCa. In 2013, she cofounded Chime for Change with Salma Hayek to help raise funds and awareness for girls’ and women’s empowerment with a focus on education, health and justice. Through crowdfunding, the group has raised more than $ 7.3 million to support 409 projects in 86 countries through 144 nonprofit partners.
Never one to shirk the spotlight, Beyoncé helped launch the partnership with Global Citizen with an announcement video. Her cohort Hayek noted that Chime for Change and Global Citizen were both started “with the idea that individuals have a significant role to play in creating global change.” She said, “This partnership will reach millions

Global HIV/AIDS Politics, Policy, and Activism: Persistent Challenges and Emerging Issues

Global HIV/AIDS Politics, Policy, and Activism: Persistent Challenges and Emerging Issues

The HIV/AIDS epidemic is at a critical turning point. Compelling new findings herald the potential to eventually grind the epidemic to a halt through a combination of expanded treatment coverage and new biomedical approaches to prevention. At the same time, the severe global economic downturns have negatively affected wealthy donor nations that have provided the funds and technical support for programs in the developing world. It is against this backdrop that this landmark three-volume set was developed. It provides a broad overview of the critical political issues surrounding HIV/AIDS, inspects key areas of policy and policymaking, and spotlights the most important forms of activism and community mobilization. The volumes reflect an eclectic and wide-ranging set of issues written by an international team comprising dozens of authors from nations including the United States, the United Kingdom, Ghana, South Africa, Brazil, Cambodia, Norway, and Qatar. The international contributors represent a variety of disciplines and bring with them a range of styles and methodological approaches appropriate to their specific topics and disciplines. An important addition to academic and public libraries, this expansive work will benefit students and other readers interested in politics, policymaking, public health, activism, and community mobilization, both in the United States and globally.

The World Market for Base Metal Imitation Jewelry: A 2009 Global Trade Perspective

The World Market for Base Metal Imitation Jewelry: A 2009 Global Trade Perspective

This report was created for strategic planners, international executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for base metal imitation jewelry. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics that appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for base metal imitation jewelry for those countries serving the world market via exports or supplying from various countries via imports. I do so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying base metal imitation jewelry? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of base metal imitation jewelry vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of base metal imitation jewelry? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

Treasure Hunt: Inside the Mind of the New Global Consumer

The essential follow-up to the "BusinessWeek" bestseller "Trading Up" A BMW in a Costco parking lot? A working class family with a 50 inch plasma TV? A 27-year-old Japanese administrative assistant with a collection of Coach purses? An 87-year-old retiree in Ohio exclaiming the value of Aldi brand honey? What’s going on in the mind of the new consumer? Today’s consumers can seem impossible to understand, and even harder to please. For instance, the average mall shopper will spend her 0, then leave when she hits that limit. She’ll probably buy shoes rather than clothing, because she doesn’t want to think about her dress size. And the store most likely to get her money isn’t the one with the nicest display or the deepest discounts… it’s the one closest to her parking spot. In his research with dozens of leading companies, Michael J. Silverstein has interviewed thousands of customers, extracting fascinating patterns about what really drives their purchase decisions. His first book, the acclaimed bestseller "Trading Up," has taught a generation of marketers about the "new luxury" phenomenon, and why consumers will happily pay a steep premium for goods and services that are emotionally satisfying, from golf clubs to bathroom hardware to beauty products. But "Trading Up" only revealed part of the story of the new consumer. The same middle class consumers who are happily trading up at Victoria’s Secret and Panera are going on treasure hunts at Costco and Home Depot. And they are often getting as much emotional satisfaction in the discount stores as in the luxury stores. Silverstein’s new book explains how the new consumer approaches bargain hunting, and how even the most mundane shopping a for things like paper towels and pet food — have become an adventure rather than a tedious chore. It turns out that, in just about every consumer category, both the high end and the low end are growing and innovation rich. Many middle class consumers gladly spend .00 a day for a vente Starbucks latte; others spend 40 cents a day on home brewed coffee, feel good about their frugality, and save up the difference to buy Apple’s newest Nano. World Trade Law after Neoliberalism: Reimagining the Global Economic Order

World Trade Law after Neoliberalism: Reimagining the Global Economic Order

The rise of economic liberalism in the latter stages of the 20th century coincided with a fundamental transformation of international economic governance, especially through the law of the World Trade Organization. In this book, Andrew Lang provides a new account of this transformation, and
considers its enduring implications for international law. Against the commonly-held idea that ''neoliberal'' policy prescriptions were encoded into WTO law, Lang argues that the last decades of the 20th century saw a reinvention of the international trade regime, and a reconstitution of its internal
structures of knowledge.

In addition, the book explores the way that resistance to economic liberalism was expressed and articulated over the same period in other areas of international law, most prominently international human rights law. It considers the promise and limitations of this form of ''inter-regime'' contestation,
arguing that measures to ensure greater collaboration and cooperation between regimes may fail in their objectives if they are not accompanied by a simultaneous destabilization of each regime''s structures of knowledge and characteristic features. With that in mind, the book contributes to a full and
productive contestation of the nature and purpose of global economic governance.

Zombie Banks: How Broken Banks and Debtor Nations Are Crippling the Global Economy

Zombie Banks: How Broken Banks and Debtor Nations Are Crippling the Global Economy

An in-depth look at the problems surrounding zombie banks and their dangerous effect on the global economy“The title is worthy of a B movie, but it''s also apt. Bloomberg News reporter Yalman Onaran, supported by former U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. chief Sheila Bair – who provides a foreword and numerous interviews – urge that insolvent banks both small and too big to fail be allowed to do precisely that.  Reading bank balance sheets is not everyone''s idea of a good time. But Mr. Onaran, with support from Ms. Bair, does the chore and explains what it means.  Mr. Onaran shows that the process of rescuing dead and dying banks is increasing systemic risk in the global banking system. And that is really more frightening than scream flicks from Tinseltown.”  — Financial Post“Yalman Onaran knows of putrid financial institutions, having written about them in his native Turkey so successfully he brought down a few in Istanbul in the late ''90''s.” — Huffington Post“Do We Love Zombie Banks? The new book by Yalman Onaran of Bloomberg News, Zombie Banks: How Broken Banks and Debtor Nations Are Crippling the Global Economy, is a well-organized and clearly written discussion of the use of leverage to provide growth in many different economies. Onaran has carefully researched the zombie phenomenon and makes some important points in this concise volume about both public policy and the concerns of investors. One of the more interesting early threads in the book is the juxtaposition of the experience of the US in the S&L crisis and Japan in the 1980s and 1990s with the US today. Zombie Banks is a good review of the latest thinking about the ebb and flow of the political economy.” — R. Christopher Whalen, author of InflatedZombie banking has become standard operating procedure for big debtor nations. They prop up failing institutions, print money, and avoid financial corrections. But in an attempt to prolong the inevitable, bigger problems are created. The approach used now has not, and will not, work. This timely book reveals why. Zombie Banks tells the story of how debtor nations and failing institutions are damaging the long-term prospects of the global economy.Author Yalman Onaran, a veteran Bloomberg News reporter and financial banking sector expert, examines exactly what a zombie bank is and why they are kept alive. He also discusses how they hurt economic recovery and what needs to be done in order to restore stability. Along the way, Onaran takes an honest look at how we arrived at this point and details the harsh realities that must be faced, and the serious steps that must be taken, in order to get things headed in the right direction.Puts insolvent banks and debtor nations in the spotlight and examines how they are crippling the global economyOn the record sources include Paul Volcker, Joseph Stiglitz, Sheila Bair, and many more bank executives, regulators, politicians, and policymakers in the United States and abroadTakes the complexity of the current situation and translates it in a way that makes it understandableWhile the short-term measures taken to stave off depression and rejuvenate economic growth may offer hope, they are unsustainable over the long term. Get a better look at what really lies ahead, and what it will take to improve our economic situation, with this book.

The Global Search for Education: Shepherd Sound

2014-02-27-cmrubinworldleadshepherdschool3500.jpg

“Musicians are all human, that is, we all have issues and things we want to improve but we also have the same goal, and that is to be the best we can be at what we do.”

– Niccolo Muti

World-renowned violinist, Cho-Liang Lin, Professor of Violin at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, urges all young musicians “to get up in front of people and perform.”

And The Shepherd School Orchestra did – magnificently! Led by their charismatic conductor, Larry Rachleff, the orchestra made its Carnegie Hall debut Tuesday evening, February 18 with energy, artistry and a very distinctive Shepherd sound.

Founded in 1975, The Shepherd School of Music in Houston is widely recognized as one of the nation’s most elite music institutions. The school emphasizes a performance-based curriculum. “I think what’s unique about the Shepherd School is that musicians are given a lot of opportunities to learn in front of an audience and that’s very important when it comes to building self-confidence,” explains student violinist Niccolo Muti.

The performance at Carnegie Hall kicked off with Hector Berlioz’ Le Corsaire followed by American Composer Christopher Rouse’s Violin Concerto featuring a remarkable solo performance by Cho-Liang Lin. The score to this complex and beautiful work was actually composed for Cho-Liang Lin in 1991. The principal orchestral work of the evening was Bela Bartok’s magnificent Concerto for Orchestra featuring numerous solos from the ensemble, giving many of the 103 extraordinarily gifted young musicians the opportunity to shine.

Beyond the dream of all accomplished musicians, which is to perform in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, there are the numerous additional benefits and skills that a music education at this level of the art form can offer students. “Performers achieve incredible levels of coordination and dexterity while simultaneously channeling the deepest emotional expressions of the music. How can this not be of benefit to all studies,” observes professional artist and faculty member, Jon Kimura Parker.

I had the opportunity to chat further with Cho-Liang Lin and Jon Kimura Parker along with students Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille (trombonist), Titus Underwood (oboist), Anatasia Sukhopara (violinist) and Niccolo Muti (violinist).

“Passion for something one holds dear is very important. Beethoven, Tom Edison, Steve Jobs, Michelangelo, Goethe, Jonas Salk, and Lincoln all had passion. Believe in something one loves and pursue that something to the fullest.” – Cho-Liang Lin

You are both veterans of the international concert stage as well as committed educators. What do you think are the most important skills that a young artist must have to be successful in the professional world of music today?

Cho-Liang Lin: Classical music is such an exacting discipline. It takes years of practicing, single-minded training and hours of lessons. Then one enters the real world where competition is stiff and judgment of one’s talent and thus future career can be decided in one single performance or audition. Therefore, apart from talent, a young artist must have the ability to convey artistry, emotion and a real sense of beauty to the audience. This requires natural ability, confidence, clear-minded thinking and lots of experience. By experience, I mean knowing what to do on stage under pressure. This cannot be learned in a practice room. It must be learned by being on stage in front of an audience.

Jon Kimura Parker: I believe that young artists have to understand themselves and to be able to communicate effectively. Forty years ago, it was not remarkable to ask of our audience that they would disconnect from the external world and focus on a 40-minute work. Nowadays, we are stretching the attention span of many. I love to see a young artist be able to engage people around them; to inspire others to discover the incredible joy of great music.

What real world life skills do you believe an educated musician can use in other pursuits?

Cho-Liang Lin: In a word: Passion. I am passionate about music. Nothing is more rewarding than to listen or play a great work. Passion for something one holds dear is very important. Beethoven, Tom Edison, Steve Jobs, Michelangelo, Goethe, Jonas Salk, and Lincoln all had passion. Believe in something one loves and pursue that something to the fullest.

Jon Kimura Parker: Musicians aren’t just creating music; they are also great listeners. An educated musician typically has a highly developed sense of the beauty of mathematics and structure, an endless curiosity, and a deep connection with the humanities. These skills have taken musicians in many different directions.

“An educated musician typically has a highly developed sense of the beauty of mathematics and structure, an endless curiosity, and a deep connection with the humanities.” – Jon Kimura Parker

What real world life skills (other than music) did you gain from your education at the Shepherd School of Music? Do you think music helped you with your other academic studies at Rice?

Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille: Absolutely! Learning music gives you a lot of skills that are precious in life. One important example is discipline! To learn an instrument requires constant effort. You learn that with perseverance you can achieve your dream. And learning to persevere applies to everything in life.

Anastasia Sukhopara: I think gratitude and discipline are some of the most important life skills. The dedication to music and to the highest standards of excellence that are required at the Shepherd School are a priceless life lesson. Settling for nothing but the best is really a critical skill, in music and life alike.

Titus Underwood: I have gained a deeper appreciation for artistry among my young colleagues.

Niccolo Muti: You can be as passionate as you want to be about something but if you don’t put in the work it won’t help you succeed.

“With perseverance you can achieve your dream. And learning to persevere applies to everything in life.” – Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille

So, what advice would you give to freshman musicians coming to the Shepherd School of Music?

Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille: Take every opportunity you can to learn and push yourself farther in your musical development! Shepherd school is such a rich musical environment. There are incredible faculty, talented students and so many opportunities. It’s the best time and the best environment to improve yourself and become a better musician!

Titus Underwood: Stay confident in your abilities but always humble in your ethics.

Anastasia Sukhopara: Know what you want, work hard and be patient!

Niccolo Muti: You are going to get a lot of opportunities to perform at the Shepherd School and performance experience is the most important thing when it comes to building self-confidence.

A lot of professional musicians both teach and perform at your school – what’s it like to be learning from artists/teachers such as Renee Fleming, Jon Kimura Parker and Cho-Liang Lin?

Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille: It’s fantastic that Shepherd School gives us these opportunities. It’s been an incredible experience to have the chance to play for those professional musicians! It’s always been really inspiring even when it was not my specific instrument.

Niccolo Muti: Renee Fleming gave a master class at the Shepherd School. She told us that she is still constantly learning and working at her craft. It made me realize that musicians are all human, that is, we all have issues and things we want to improve but we also have the same goal, and that is to be the best we can be at what we do.

Invisible Hands: Narratives of Human Rights in the Global Economy

The men and women in “Invisible Hands” reveal the human rights abuses occurring behind the scenes of the global economy. These narrators — including phone manufacturers in China, copper miners in Zambia, garment workers in Bangladesh, and farmers around the world — reveal the secret history of the things we buy, including lives and communities devastated by low wages, environmental degradation, and political repression. Sweeping in scope and rich in detail, these stories capture the interconnectivity of all people struggling to support themselves and their families. Narrators include Kalpona, a leading Bangladeshi labor organizer who led her first strike at 15; Han, who, as a teenager, began assembling circuit boards for an international electronics company based in Seoul; Albert, a copper miner in Zambia who, during a wage protest, was shot by representatives of the Chinese-owned mining company that he worked for; and Sanjay, who grew up in the shadow of the Bhopal chemical disaster, one of the worst industrial accidents in history.

Here’s What These Record Low Temperatures Say About Global Warming

As the frigid polar vortex makes itself at home over a giant swath of the country, it’s also serving as fodder for all those equally unwelcome climate change deniers. Despite the fact that 97 percent of scientists agree that man-made climate change is happening, the likes of Donald Trump say many of these record lows are the perfect proof to show that, no, the planet is not warming. Scientific right?

So, does this extreme winter weather prove that our planet is just as cold as it’s always been? No, not at all. But it does say this.

TK gifs

Dear Mr. Trump: Winter is always cold. And sometimes that means unimaginably cold.

Despite wind chills nearing -60 degrees Fahrenheit in Chicago and temperatures that left some parts of Canada colder than Mars, Arctic sea ice is still melting, atmospheric CO2 concentrations are still climbing and climate change is predicted to pose a far greater threat to the planet than many scientists thought.

Winters have become increasingly warmer over the past century, and despite the recent bout of subzero temps, global warming can make extreme weather events like the polar vortex even worse. In layman’s terms, as the planet warms and Arctic sea ice melts, the northern polar region equalizes a bit with temperatures farther south, causing the jet stream that forms a circular band around the northern latitudes to slow down.

This jet stream usually holds the far colder Arctic air in place with winds in excess of 100 mph, but pockets of cold can escape at times when the stream slows down, according to Time. That’s exactly what’s happened this time around, except the amount of cold that’s leaked past the seal is much larger than usual and has pushed farther south (take a look at this interactive graphic from the Guardian for a better visual).

Plain and simple, climate change can’t be proven or disproven by a single weather event. Period. Long-term trends have shown that climate change is happening and the IPCC has said it’s “extremely likely” humans are the dominant cause.

So, although it’s counterintuitive, the current frostbitten state of the country may be further proof that yes, the planet is warming — and climate change is here with a vengeance.

Understanding Global Cultures

Understanding Global Cultures

In Understanding Global Cultures, Fifth Edition, authors Martin J. Gannon and Rajnandini Pillai present the cultural metaphor – any activity, phenomenon, or institution with which the members of a given culture identify emotionally or cognitively – as a method for understanding the cultural mindsets of individual nations, clusters of nations, and even continents. The book shows how metaphors are guidelines to help outsiders quickly understand what members of a culture consider important. The fully updated Fifth Edition includes 31 nation-specific chapters, including a new Part XI on popular music as cultural metaphors, two completely new chapters on Vietnam and Argentina, revisions to all retained chapters, and a more explicit linkage between each cultural metaphor and current economic and business developments in each nation.
