Some Stars May Shun Black at the Golden Globes: ‘There’s Some Backlash to the Wear-Black Mandate’

As stars prepare for Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, the one sure bet is that the red carpet will be going dark, at least as far as the clothing is concerned. In solidarity with Hollywood’s anti-sexual harassment movement, now officially named Time’s Up, the plan has been for actresses (and the actors who support them) to wear black to send a united message. But as buzz has built around the moment and the movement, the inevitable resistance from some attendees has taken hold as well.

According to a PEOPLE source, “There’s some backlash to the wear-black mandate. Some feel women should celebrate their newfound power, strong voices and the future by wearing a wide variety of brighter shades. Instead of distracting from the real issue with a mandate to wear one particular color. There will be big important speeches, no doubt, and they will make a much better statement.”

RELATED PHOTOS: 2018 Golden Globes Nominees at Their Very First Awards

But that doesn’t mean everyone will be wearing brights, either. Stylist Ilaria Urbinati previously confirmed that her clients, such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Tom Hiddleston and Armie Hammer would be taking a stand alongside the female stars, and Johnson confirmed this on his own as well.

“Because everyone keeps asking me… YES, the men WILL be standing in solidarity with women on this wearing-all-black movement to protest against gender inequality at this year’s Golden Globes,” Urbanati wrote. “At least ALL MY GUYS will be. Safe to say this may not be the right time to choose to be the odd man out here… just sayin…”

And actress Eva Longoria, who is one of the founding members of Time’s Up, spoke to the New York Times about the red carpet blackout, saying that many stars planned to participate in appropriately somber attire. “This is a moment of solidarity, not a fashion moment,” the star said. “For years, we’ve sold these awards shows as women, with our gowns and colors and our beautiful faces and our glamour. This time the industry can’t expect us to go up and twirl around. That’s not what this moment is about.”

Golden Globes’ Black Dress Code Means More Creativity, Social Statements

The call for actresses to wear all black to the Golden Globes now has an official name — Time’s Up, an initiative formed by 300 of the most prominent women in entertainment, including everyone from Reese Witherspoon to Shonda Rhimes. And it’s more likely than not that designers will fall in line to accommodate them — even when the overarching message is asking audiences to focus on something other than the dress for one night.
“There are actresses who have called designers directly to request their [previously chosen] dress to be made in black,” said longtime stylist Jessica Paster, who is dressing several Globes-bound women. “Designers have always bent over backward to accommodate an actress if they can, and this is an amazing time to be a woman, so I think they will do whatever needs to be done. It’s not about the designer — it’s about the meaning behind the movement.”
Naeem Khan is one such designer. A dress he custom-designed for presenter Christina Hendricks was originally made in gold.
“This was a big challenge in my world because everything I do is made by hand. As you can imagine, when you have 20 people working on a dress and you only

Kristen Bell isn’t shy about sharing the tips and tricks that go into her red carpet style

The 36-year-old revealed she was wearing butt pads underneath her gorgeous Jenny Packham gown to the Golden Globes on Sunday.

Jimmy Fallon, Takes Notes: 8 Hosting Tips from Past Golden Globes

The Golden Globes hosting gig isn’t always an easy one — even if past hosts like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Ricky Gervais made it look like a breeze. The 2017 ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Fallon, so naturally, we have extremely high expectations. But just in case he needs some last-minute advice, we gathered some tips for him, based on the previous hosts’ appearances.

1. It’s cool to wink at NBC.

Ricky Gervais was a fan of this one, giving a shoutout to The Office and, yes, also joking about the network’s lack of nominations one year.

2. While you’re at it, poke fun at Hollywood.

Tina, Amy and Ricky all loved to lean into the industry’s vanity.

3. Pick the right celebs to call out.

Note: Steve Carell is the master of the faux-displeased face.

4. It’s cool to celebrate the squad.

Amy and Tina’s friendship = iconic — and one of the best parts of watching the Globes.

5. Avoid jokes that are in poor taste.

We won’t repeat them here … but you know the ones.

6. Embrace the industry.

Throwback to that time Ricky light-heartedly joked about movie studios buying actors their awards.

7. Shake off lukewarm reactions.

Not every joke will get a laugh, which honestly just made Ricky laugh.

8. Remind everyone that Meryl Streep is a national treasure.

Win or lose.

The Golden Globes will air live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel’s Grand Ballroom on Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

How To Get More Followers While Live-Tweeting The Golden Globes

The Golden Globes are a time for celebrating the arts and also live-tweeting said celebration. Amid the masses, it can feel like your hilarious commentary is not getting you the thousands of followers you deserve. With the fleeting glory of favorites and retweets in mind, HuffPost Entertainment spoke with Lara Cohen, Twitter Head of Talent, to figure out the best ways to build your numbers during the show on Sunday night.

Tweet at your favorite famous people.
Don’t be scared, maybe Uzo Aduba will finally respond to you! “Tweet at your favorite nominees,” Cohen said. “They’re all on their phones, they’re all checking Twitter while they’re there. A lot of stars will even do things like answer questions during the limo ride to the show.”

Tweet at other not even remotely famous people.
Interaction is a great way to both build your following and find more people to follow. Engage with other people during the event. And don’t just favorite things you enjoy, actually respond to them. Cohen recommended spending more time actually tweeting back and forth with others.

Curate your newsfeed by making or subscribing to a list …
A list provides a fine-tuned feed, without revamping your account. “It’s good to do this in advance for the [specific] show you’re watching,” Cohen said. “Include a healthy mix of friends, comedians, entertainment writers, nominees and presenters who are on Twitter.” (Pro-tip: Retta and Billy Eichner are A+ to follow during awards shows / all the time.)

… And / or by muting annoying accounts.
Muting is a great way to not have to see people who are either not tweeting about the awards or just not being as hilarious as you. And it’s easier than throwing shade with an un-follow. “If there’s, say, annoying ‘Modern Family’ fans, you can always un-mute them when the show is over,” Cohen said.

Search for things that happen during the show.
If something funny happens and you have a really funny thing to say about that thing, it’s likely other people do too. Use the search function to find a specific event or observation (i.e. “Jacqueline Bisset drunk“) throughout the night.

Use the official hashtag: #GoldenGlobes.
This is good for finding other folks tweeting about the show (and can help them to find you). Also, pay attention to what’s trending. “Both the hash tag and trending terms are a good way to find bigger names who you may not even know are on Twitter, because all of the verified accounts will surface to the top of that conversation,” Cohen said.

Finally: Cohen says, “be authentic.”
Always best to just be yourself — kind of like in real life!

The Golden Globe Awards air Sunday at 8:00 p.m. ET on NBC.

Golden Globes Highlights: From Amy Poehler’s Win To Diane Keaton’s Song For Woody Allen

The 71st Golden Globe Awards featured many moments worth their weight in gold.

From Amy Poehler winning Best Actress for “Parks and Recreation” (after making out with Bono) to Emma Thompson walking out onstage with her high heels and martini in hand, the night was full of surprises and fun.

Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler owned the night. From their funny opening bit (“Tam Honks,” anyone?) to Poehler dressing up as Fey’s “son,” Randy, but it was Poehler who ended up being an actual winner. She took home the Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on “Parks and Recreation.”

In addition to love for Poehler, the Hollywood Foreign Press were obviously big fans of “Breaking Bad,” which won Best Drama Series and Best Actor in a Drama Series for Bryan Cranston.

There was a double surprise for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” in the TV Comedy categories when series star Andy Samberg won for Best Actor and the show itself won Best Comedy Series.

Some of the stranger highlights included Jacqueline Bisset’s perplexing acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries, and Diane Keaton ending her acceptance speech for Woody Allen’s Cecil B. DeMille Award by singing the Girl Scouts song, “Make New Friends (But Keep The Old).”

The Golden Globes continued with its annual tradition of having the stars let loose, giving the audience a show to remember — and plenty to talk about until next year.

Golden Globes Facts: A Look Back At Hollywood’s Most Unpredictable Award Show

As we gear up for Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony, which is guaranteed to provide more of the awards’ usual zaniness, let’s take a look back at some Globes trivia.

The Globes used to hand out two New Star of the Year accolades, one male and one female. They were discontinued in 1983. Winners included Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mia Farrow, Diana Ross and Bette Midler.

Unsurprisingly, Meryl Streep holds the record for the most nominations. She has 28 nods and eight wins, for “Kramer vs. Kramer,” “The French Lieutenant’s Woman,” “Sophie’s Choice,” “Adaptation.,” “Angels in America,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Julie & Julia” and “The Iron Lady.”

(Streep and Nicole Kidman celebrate their 2003 wins for “Adaptation.” and “The Hours,” respectively. Streep co-starred in “The Hours” and was nominated opposite Kidman for Best Actress – Drama.)

For many years, the Globes had no host and awards were handed out by journalists in attendance. That changed in 1958 when the Rat Pack stormed the stage and took over unofficial hosting duties. Ricky Gervais was the show’s first hosts since John Larroquette and Janine Turner emceed in 1995.

Four actors have gone home with two awards in the same year: Sigourney Weaver (1989, for “Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey” and “Working Girl”), Joan Plowright (1993, for “Enchanted April” and “Stalin”), Helen Mirren (2007, for “The Queen” and “Elizabeth I”) and Kate Winslet (2010, for “Revolutionary Road” and “The Reader”). Julia-Louis Dreyfus, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Idris Elba are among the stars who have a chance to join that list this year.

The Globes’ first trophy originated in 1945, one year after the inaugural awards. Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association held a contest to design a statuette that would reflect their aim to honor the best in film. The group’s president, Marina Cisternas, crafted a golden globe with a filmstip wrapped around it and mounted on a pedestal.

Miss Golden Globe was instated in 1963. This year, Sosie Bacon (below) will take over the duties. Previous Miss Golden Globes who’ve gone on to see fame include Melanie Griffith, Laura Dern, Joely Fisher, Tara Reid and Freddie Prinze Jr., who is one of only a few Mr. Golden Globes.

The television prizes were added in 1956. Since then, only one other category — Best Animated Feature, which was introduced in 2007 — has joined the roster of awards. “Cars,” “Ratatouille,” “WALL-E,” “Up,” “Toy Story 3,” “The Adventures of Tintin” and “Brave” have since won.

The Cecil B. DeMille Award has been handed out 60 times. Only a dozen women have been the recipients. Judy Garland remains both the first female and youngest winner in the award’s history. The oldest was 90-year-old studio mogul Samuel Goldwyn. Only two African-Americans have won: Sidney Poitier and Morgan Freeman. This year’s honoree, the notoriously awards-adverse Woody Allen, has said he will not attend the ceremony. Diane Keaton will accept in his stead.

Allen is taking a note out of Marlon Brando’s playbook. Brando refused the Golden Globe he won in 1973 for “The Godfather,” using it as opportunity to protest U.S. “imperialism and racism.”

Kerry Washington is the first black female to crack a leading-actress TV category (comedy or drama) since Regina Young was up for “I’ll Fly Away” in 1992.

Six of 2014’s TV actor nominees received film nods in previous years.: Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Don Cheadle, Michael J. Fox, Jon Voight, Janet McTeer. Julia-Louis Dreyfus joins that list thanks to her dual nominations this year, for HBO’s “Veep” and the movie “Enough Said.”

Critics were so shocked when “The Tourist” and “Burlesque” racked up multiple high-profile nominations in 2011 that reports accused Sony, the movies’ distributor, of bribing HFPA voters with an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas and a meet-and-greet with Cher.

The Globes’ reputation for filling nomination slots with critically panned movies didn’t begin with “The Tourist” and “Burlesque.” The most infamous example came in 1982 when Pia Zadora, star of the lambasted movie “Butterfly,” took home New Star of the Year the same year she garnered Worst Actress and Worst New Star at the Golden Raspberry Awards. Reports then surfaced that Zadora’s husband, Israeli multimillionaire Meshulam Riklis, had flown HFPA members to Vegas — sound familiar? — to watch Zadora perform.

Other surprising nods in recent years include Kevin Spacey for “Casino Jack,” Sarah Jessica Parker for “The Family Stone,” “Patch Adams” for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Jim Carrey for “Liar Liar.”

If either “American Hustle” or “12 Years a Slave” — this year’s most-nominated movies — sweeps up all of its categories, it would be the first movie to do so since 1975’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

Christine Lahti had to be summoned out of the bathroom when she won in 1998 for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama.

“Nashville” (1975) is the most-nominated movie in Globes history, with nine nods. (It only took home one trophy, for Best Original Song.) “Cabaret,” “Bugsy” and “Titanic” each received eight nominations.
