Report: Rockets and Carmelo Anthony ‘discussing’ veteran’s status going forward this season

Carmelo Anthony hasn’t been the answer for the Rockets so far this season. In news that no one could have possibly seen coming, it appears Carmelo Anthony and the Houston Rockets might be re-evaluating their relationship after a slow start to the season for both parties. With Anthony out for the Rockets’ game against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday, the team and player are engaged in ongoing talks on how they “might still be able to proceed together for the rest of the season,” according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Going Trick-or-Treating on Wednesday? Bring Your DIY UNICEF Box to Raise Money for the Cause

Remember those little orange boxes you could take trick-or-treating to raise money for UNICEF? They’re back — and you can even make one by yourself before you go collecting candy on Wednesday night.

The Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign kicked off in 1950 and has raised nearly $ 177 million to help the organization provide children with healthcare, nutrition, safe water, emergency relief and educational services.

While some might not see the difference some spare change can make, it’s huge: 50 cents provides one packet of ready-to-use therapeutic food to help a malnourished child, $ 2 provides 10 bars of soap and $ 5 provides one UNICEF backpack for a child to use at school.

Can covers are available to download at TrickorTreatforUNICEF.org, along with more information on this year’s #BeScaryGood campaign, featuring Slappy from the movie Goosebumps 2. Those who have their hands full with chocolate but still want to help can contribute at unicef.org. It’ll feel just as good as that post-holiday sugar high.

Mila Kunis Recalls Having ‘Fun’ with Ashton Kutcher Before Going Serious: ‘Let’s Just Hook Up’

Mila Kunis says she experienced a serious case of déjà vu with husband Ashton Kutcher back when they were starting out.

The actress, 34, recently appeared on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast where she shared some little known details about her relationship with her fellow That ’70 Show star.

“I did a movie called Friends With Benefits. He did a movie that was very similar called No Strings Attached. We lived our movies out,” the actress said. “We were just like, let’s just hook up. Let’s have fun. We’re both single. We both trust each other. Everything’s great.”

Much like the films the two starred in, what was once a casual relationship inevitably escalated to something more serious. After attempting the Friends with Benefits/No Strings Attached route, Kunis took charge when she realized her feelings for the actor after he told her about someone he was dating.

“I felt like I got punched in the gut, literally overnight,” she said on the podcast.

“I was like, you know what, I actually care about you. I don’t want to mess anything up so I’m just going to walk away before it becomes too much,” she remembered. “And he was like, ‘Got it.’ And the next day, he showed up to my house and he was like, ‘Move in with me’ and I said, ‘OK.’”

The adorable couple was destined to be together since Kutcher, 40, was Kunis’ first kiss on That ’70s Show. Kunis was only 14 when she was cast, while Kutcher was 19.

RELATED: Ashton Kutcher Dishes About First On- and Off-Screen Kisses with Mila Kunis: ‘It Was Obvious Things Were Happening’

Kunis recalled seeing Kutcher at an award show where he caught her eye years after they had worked together.

“I was looking around, and there was a really beautiful man from the back,” she said on the podcast. “I was literally like, ‘Oh, he’s kinda hot.’ … And then he turned around, and I was like, ‘Oh, my God, it’s Kutch.’ I thought it was the weirdest thing that I was checking this guy out, and it was someone that I had known forever.”

The Bad Moms star remembered telling her mom in 2012 that she and Kutcher were dating. Recently the actress told the story while on Dax Sherpard’s Armchair Expert podcast.

“We were driving up Laurel Canyon, and I was like, ‘Mom, I have to tell you, I’m dating somebody,’ ” Kunis recalled. “And she was like, ‘Oh, tell me! Who are you dating?’ And I was like, ‘You’ve got to brace yourself for this one. I’m dating Ashton Kutcher.’ And she literally was like, ‘Shut the f— up’ in Russian. I was like, ‘No, I’m serious. I also may be in love with him, so…’”

The couple married in July 2015 after getting engaged in Feb. 2014 and welcoming daughter Wyatt, 3, that October. They later also welcomed son Dimitri, 1, in Nov. 2016.

New Garments Going on Display at ‘Diana: Her Fashion Story’ Exhibition

FASHION HISTORY: Historic Royal Palaces, the charity that manages Kensington Palace, has been working toward adding new, never-before-seen garments for the reopening of the popular “Diana:Her Fashion Story” exhibition, later this month.
The exhibition charts the sartorial history of Princess Diana and highlights important moments in her life through her clothing.
Some of the outfits going on display include the Armani chinos and white shirt she wore to visit the landmine fields in Angola with the International Red Cross in 1997 and a violet body-hugging gown created by Gianni Versace, a dear friend of Diana’s, for a fund-raising dinner at the Museum of Natural History in Chicago.
The pink David Sassoon dress Princess Diana wore en route to her honeymoon with Prince Charles will also be exhibited, alongside pieces by Catherine Walker, Caroline Charles and Victor Edelstein, a leading London couturier in the Eighties.
Princess Diana was also known for championing local designer names during State visits, as illustrated by a cobalt blue pleated gown by the London-based Japanese-born designer, Yuki, worn to a State Dinner with Emperor Hirohito in Tokyo.
The exhibition will reopen on April 26 at Kensington Palace and it’s predicted to attract large crowds as interest on the British Royals is peaking, with

Roseanne Barr Thought She Was Going Blind for a Whole Year — But It Was a Misdiagnosis

After a whole year of thinking she was going blind due to macular degeneration and glaucoma, Roseanne Barr received some good news: She was no longer losing her eyesight, and it was a misdiagnosis all along.

“I went to a new doctor about a year ago,” Barr tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s issue, on stands Friday. “She told me I don’t have macular degeneration, but rather a mole on the inside of my eye that’s growing, and that’s why my vision is narrowing. Probably in the next year or so I can get it removed. I have a bad eye, but I’m not losing my eyesight.”

“My dad has macular degeneration so I thought it was genetic,” she adds. “I just accepted it. It was a way better diagnosis than some of my friends were getting. It’s not deadly. I didn’t take it too badly.”

In 2015, the 65-year-old actress was given the news of her deteriorating eyesight and immediately took to her own treatment plan.

“I have macular degeneration and glaucoma, so is good for me for that because I have pressure in my eyes. It’s a good medicine for a lot of things,” Barr previously told the Daily Beast.

For more on the Roseanne revival, pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on stands Friday

While Barr admits that she was scared at first, she eventually learned to accept the health scare.

“I’m positive that nothing will go right in life,” she says. “That lets me off the hook. You never know. It’s never what you think and it’s never what you dread – it’s always something else that you didn’t expect. So you might as well live every day and have as much fun as you can. Do at least one good deed a day anonymously. Have as much fun as you can have.”

to get our best stories of the day delivered straight to your inbox.

Now, Barr, who spends a lot of her free time babysitting her grandkids and working on her macadamia nut farm in Hawaii, just finished wrapping the revival of Roseanne as a limited ABC series.

“The first day in the writers room, I thought I was in heaven,” she says. “Every idea I had all this time, I had pitched to them and they picked them right up. It was kind of like a machine – it worked so well. The first day on the set, I hadn’t seen John (Goodman) or Laurie (Metcalfe) for a long time, and there we were. It was really exciting to watch them rebuild the set — it’s just perfect. It still felt new, but very familiar.”

The Roseanne revival premieres Tuesday on at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Matilda Lutz on Going From Scream Queen to Goddess of Revenge

Among the guests at Giorgio Armani’s Emporio Armani show on Sunday was Matilda Lutz, the face of the brand’s Because It’s You fragrance.
The “Rings” star has been creating buzz on the festival scene for her performance in “Revenge,” French director Coralie Fargeat’s feature debut, in which the Italian actress plays a young woman who travels to a remote desert villa with her married boyfriend. The trip ends in a bloodbath after one of the man’s friends rapes her.
Lutz said she first realized the film was hitting a nerve when it bowed at the Toronto Film Festival in September. “All the audience was, like, going crazy and they’re rooting for the character and they were screaming,” she recalled. The saga of female vengeance also won plaudits at the Sundance Film Festival last month.
“It’s definitely a metaphor for what’s going on right now, and I’m sure that the director didn’t really think about #MeToo or all the movements that are happening in the world, but she basically thought that women always had to adjust to the society,” Lutz remarked.
Her next role represents a 180-degree turn. She plays Simonetta Vespucci, believed to have been a muse of Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli, in season

Couple’s Bathing Suit Photo Is Going Viral For An Inspiring Reason

One body positivity advocate, wife and mom is inspiring others with a viral Instagram post about growing to love her body just the way it is ― curves, stretch marks, rolls and all.

On Friday, Instagram user Jazzy (@a_body_positive_jazzy) posted a photo of her and her husband in their bathing suits holding hands on the beach. In the caption, Jazzy opened up about what it’s like to be married to someone with a different body type (her husband was “born fit,” as she puts it) and how she struggled for years to embrace her larger frame.

“Over the years this man has loved every curve, every roll, and every stretch mark on my body,” she wrote on Instagram. “I never understood why! How could he love something that isn’t ‘perfect?’ How could a man who was ‘born fit’ love someone like me!”

Since embarking on her body positivity journey, Jazzy’s confidence has soared.

“I don’t have a flat stomach, I jiggle when I walk, hell if I run up the stairs too fast my body claps (lmao)!!” she continued. “But now I see I do have the ‘perfect’ body!! Every roll, every curve and every stretch mark is put on me just perfect to make both of us happy!!! I love my body and I finally see why he does too!!”

Some commenters fat-shamed her and condemned her for “promot[ing] being physically unfit” (insert eye roll here), but many others shared their support and words of encouragement.

“Girl, my body claps too, can I get a round of applause?! Love this,” one commenter wrote.

“I also have a very fit husband, and I’ve always been very insecure about it,” another woman wrote. “Especially when meeting all of his fitness friends for the first time…I know he loves me and my curves, and I’m slowly accepting myself for all that I am! Thanks for the wise words!”

“You’re beautiful. It’s plain to see in everyone’s eyes, not just your husband’s,” another said.

We couldn’t agree more. Keep doing you, Jazzy!

HuffPost reached out to Jazzy for comment, but had not heard back at the time of publication. This story may be updated.

Michael Phelps And Allison Schmitt Get Real About Going To Therapy

Olympic athletes Allison Schmitt and Michael Phelps know what it takes to win in the pool: Train hard, push yourself and listen to your coach.

But both swimmers say they also had another source of support that made all the difference ― a psychologist.

“Every time that I came out of that office, I felt so much better,” Phelps told HuffPost. “I was so much more relieved just talking…it didn’t matter what I was talking about. I was getting it out and I was communicating.”

Phelps and Schmitt were presented with special recognition awards at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s annual event to recognize National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day in Washington, D.C. on May 4.

The pair have partnered with SAMSHA to encourage kids to view mental and behavioral health as a core component of their overall wellness.

Schmitt says not asking for help when you are struggling with a mental health condition is akin to getting swallowed “in the rip tide.”

“Get that lifeguard out there,” she said. “It will make it a lot easier even during those rough water times.”

The swimmers have a long history of friendship and support. Schmitt entered treatment in early 2015 to help manage depression and she credits Phelps with encouraging her to ask for help.

“[Michael] said to me, ‘I can tell there is something wrong,’” Schmitt told The Detroit Free Press. “‘I don’t know what it is. I’m here for you. I can help you or I can find someone else to help you.’”

“That was the turning point for me,” Schmitt said, adding that she sought help soon after that conversation.

Phelps has long been open about working on his personal life outside of the pool. As a child, he was diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and more recently, the Olympic champion entered treatment for substance abuse in 2014 after a drunk driving arrest.

“We’re taught to persevere,” Schmitt told HuffPost. “It works in the pool: [If] you don’t get a time you want, swim faster. But life is a lot bigger than that.”

Schmitt says that when you’re hurting from any sort of life stressor or a mental health condition, it’s essential to ask for help.

Research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that among children ages 2 to 8, one in seven experiences a psychological disorder, which is classified as a mental, behavioral or development problem. Approximately one in five adults, or 43.8 million American adults, experiences a mental illness in a given year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

“A lot of these people suffer silently,” Schmitt said. “[But] it’s okay to not be okay.”

Words to live by, we think.

As part of May’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re focusing on treatment and the stigma around getting help. Check out our coverage here and share your story at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

They’re Finally Going To Close Rikers Island, America’s Monument To Jail Cruelty

Rikers Island, the gigantic island of incarceration in New York City that serves as an embarrassing emblem of violence, cruelty and neglect in the American jail system, is finally on its way to shutting down for good.

Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed Friday that a plan was in place to shutter the complex ― the nation’s second largest ― within the next 10 years. Many of the details are yet unclear, but at least part of the plan includes moving inmates to new, smaller jails scattered across the boroughs, according to The New York Times. Building those jails could cost around $ 10.6 billion.

An independent commission, created by City Council and headed by New York state chief judge Jonathan Lippman, reportedly plans to release more details on Sunday.

“New York City has always been better than Rikers Island,” de Blasio said in a press release. “[Its closure] will require that our state government, and each component of our criminal justice system, contribute to the reform efforts critical to reducing our jail population and improving re-entry services and educational programming.”

A draft of the Lippman’s report recommends reducing the Rikers population from 10,000 now to less than 5,000 in the near future, according to the New York Post.

“From 1991 to 2016, the daily jail population declined from more than 21,000 to 10,000,” the report states. “The recent history of New York City clearly demonstrates that crime and incarceration can be driven down simultaneously. Contrary to what many people believe, more jail does not mean more public safety.

If it takes 10 years to close the facility completely, it may take a lifetime to shake off Rikers’ reputation.

Several federal reports over the years have found overwhelming evidence of systemic violence, excessive force and neglect at the facility. HuffPost’s Chris Mathias reports that solitary confinement is doled out like candy on Halloween. Assaults on inmates are a dime a dozen, and they’re often covered up. There are nearly 500 inmates between the ages of 16 to 18 there on any given day. It’s been called a revolving door for people of color and the poor.

Rikers also houses a disproportionate number of mentally ill inmates ― at one point, it had more mentally ill inmates than all of the state’s 24 psychiatric hospitals combined ― and critics have long said there’s not nearly enough treatment.

For many, its closure can’t come too soon.

“For too long, New Yorkers ― especially poor people of color ― have languished in this grist mill, where human rights abuses are routine,” Glenn E. Martin, president and founder of JustLeadershipUSA, said Friday. “Countless failed attempts at incremental reform have proven that the only viable solution is to close Rikers. I am grateful that Mayor de Blasio has joined the progressive majority.”

Here’s A Toad Wearing A Top Hat, Because What Else Do You Have Going On?

Chris Newsome, a 43-year-old from Alabama, knows how to make an amphibian feel fancy.

This past summer, a toad took up residence in Newsome’s flowerbed and would visit his porch every night.

Not only did Newsome decide to give his guest a proper name — Mr. Toad — he also decided to start making hats for the little critter in the hopes of making another small fry happy.

“I made hats to cheer up a friend’s son after his pet toad died,” Newsome told The Huffington Post. “He asked if my porch toad was still around, so I put some pictures of the toad with hats on Facebook to make him laugh.”

Newsome fashioned the hats out of foam paper, which he said seemed like “toad-friendly material.”

They’re also pretty small — perfect for a toad, but quite silly-looking on Newsome’s dog, Daisy, who is wearing the hat below for scale:

Newsome also told HuffPost that it seemed Mr. Toad wasn’t bothered by modeling the hats, either.

“Even after many hats and pictures, he still returned,” Newsome said. “Either he liked the hats or he couldn’t be fazed.”

Recently, Newsome decided to post the pictures of Mr. Toad working it in his fab hats on Reddit and the pictures soon went viral, receiving more than 1.1 million views.

“Hopefully, it or another toad will visit once the weather warms up,” Newsome said.

Here’s hopping that happens!

Canadian Fur Designer Lysa Lash Going Extra Miles to Court Customers

FUR CANADA: As a fourth-generation furrier, Lysa Lash’s customized service is surprisingly similar to the attentiveness her relatives showed to their customers years ago.
Rather than wholesale her collection of easy-to-throw-on fur pieces, she sells limited-edition items at invitation-only trunk shows. Now holding these events at the Mark Hotel in New York and the Ritz-Carlton Residences in Montreal and 13 other cities, Lash said 50 to 60 women will typically show up. On-the-clock professionals blitz by for 20-minute purchases and nonworking mothers are more inclined to linger for an hour or more over a glass of wine. Regardless of their schedules, repeat shoppers know that what you see is what you get, and if they choose to wait, they very well may lose the item to a more decisive customer. On average, 85 percent of attendees buy something from the line which is offered at wholesale prices. Fox vests retail between $ 2,000 and $ 3,000 and mink jackets are in the $ 4,000 to $ 5,000 range. Her on-the-go options include a forest green short jacket, fur ponchos, a sheared beaver jacket and a rex quack with toggles, and nonbasic colors are offered.
Many of her loyal customers have busy lives like her own. “I

Lily Allen Covers Rufus Wainwright’s ‘Going To A Town’ At Women’s March

As the world grapples with a new U.S. president bent on stripping away American freedoms, we’re at least getting some damn good protests songs out of it.

On Tuesday, musician Lily Allen released a haunting cover of Rufus Wainwright’s already somber song, “Going To A Town.” The song, first released in 2007, seems more lyrically relevant than ever.

“I’m going to a town that has already been burnt down / I’m going to a place that has already been disgraced,” Allen croons in a video that shows the singer performing at the Women’s March in London. “I’m gonna see some folks who have already been let down / I’m so tired of America.”

Last weekend’s march drew millions of people from all over the world in protest of Trump’s xenophobiaracism, misogyny and proposed policies.

Artists across the musical spectrum have made their opposition to Trump clear. After a six-year hiatus, the Gorillaz introduced an anti-Trump song last week called “Halleujah Money.” And Father John Misty’s new song, “Pure Comedy,” mourns the state of the world in a video that prominently features Trump.

J Lo and Drake ‘Seem Really Happy’ but ‘Friends Have No Idea Where the Relationship Is Going’: Source

Jennifer Lopez and Drake‘s are-they-or-aren’t-they romance continues to keep fans guessing as the two musicians spend even more time together. And a source close to both stars tells PEOPLE that they are “happy.”

“Jennifer and Drake seem really happy,” the source says. “Friends have no idea where the relationship is going.

The source continued, adding that Lopez is over her relationship with on-again, off-again beau Casper Smart.

“But the one thing that’s certain— is that there is no way she is going back to ,” the source says, citing previous reports that her former boyfriend is trying to win her back. “She moved on months ago. He keeps trying to convince her he should have another chance but that door closed months ago. That door is not only closed, it’s sealed.”

A source close to Lopez previously told PEOPLE that things are heating up for the musical pair.

“Jen is looking forward with excitement to the new year. She keeps hanging out with Drake, and he has visited her house,” the source said. “She has nothing but nice things to say about Drake.”

Last week, another insider told PEOPLE the duo were just friends and were working on music together, but also spending plenty of time together.

And while Lopez, 47, and Drake, 30, have not officially commented on their hangouts, both stars have shared photos of each other on social media.

And the Lopez source said that while they “do work on music together,” the pair also “clearly enjoy each other on another level, too.”

“Jen loves the attention and she seems very happy to be spending time with him,” the Lopez source continued. “Drake is very charming. He treats Jen with lots of respect. She seems very smitten.”

5 Powerful Questions to Ask When Things Seem to be Going Wrong

When things seem to be going wrong and you’re stuck in a pit of fear, start getting curious and ask yourself some of these questions:

1. What opportunity is this giving me for growth, healing, evolution, or learning?
2. What would happen If I didn’t label this as bad?
3. What meaning am I adding to what’s happening?
4. Am I letting this situation define me?
5. What action is this situation asking me to take?

Using awareness to respond instead of react to the situations of your life creates the magic, change, shift or transformation you desire. Keeping yourself awake inside a mindset of curiosity, positivity and possibility will guide you. The five questions above can be used when you feel stuck or paralyzed about something that’s happening and you want a fresh perspective.

If something happens to you and the reaction in your mind is negative, judgmental or otherwise gloomy, take a giant step back and observe what’s happening. There might be a better way to think, believe or act that’ll serve your desire for health and happiness. There’s a giant spectrum of intensity when it comes to life’s events and the reactions they invoke, but if you look at things with awareness and curiosity, you’ll begin to have the secret to your joy.

The questions above all create more awareness, which is how you’ll be able to choose different thoughts, beliefs or actions in response to a situation. I tend to look at most of my daily events, especially the ones that feel negative, with this kind of curiosity. When I begin to feel sad, depressed, angry, fearful or frustrated I know that’s a signal to slow down and get more curious. It’s the slowing down and feeling that’s the key here.

After speaking with my almost ex-husband on the phone the other day I found myself triggered by his words. Our conversations are strained. Attempting to sort out custody and financial issues after twenty years of marriage is enough to test both of us. But this time I found myself feeling different. Even though my little powerless girl was sitting inside, ready to run and hide when she was told she was wrong, my current day warrior goddess stood firm and used awareness as her weapon.

I asked myself, “What if you don’t react but just listen instead? What if you don’t need to be right today, but instead chose to be love?” I asked some powerful questions that instantly shifted the feeling of powerlessness to confidence. This was a game changer for me, and for our conversation, which actually ended abruptly when he hung up, frustrated with my unwillingness to back down.

A feeling fully felt is the pathway through that feeling to something better. If we shove it down, numb it up or ignore it chances are it’s just laying dormant waiting for the next opportunity to trigger us. So I’ve learned to stop and feel when certain emotions, feelings, or symptoms show up. Slowing down and feeling before I rush to react is magic when it comes to dealing with the most difficult situations.

Because most of us were taught in some way that we shouldn’t feel, or that we should tough it out or not cry – feeling has become very difficult. We associate feeling with weakness, when it’s really this very vulnerability that’s our strength. We avoid it at all costs and are embarrassed when we can’t help ourselves and the tears fall.

Reality is, when we’re brave enough to feel everything, we end up having the most direct path to healing and experiencing the relief, shift or transformation we seek. So looking at the tough situations as opportunities for brave healing is how I roll…because I know it’s what I need to do to gain a perspective everyone else is missing.

Asking big questions is one way to practice this badass kind of awareness. Rather than shouting out the first thing that comes to your mind, try getting more interested in the feeling you’re having, and asking some of these questions to help you shift your perspective. “Wow, this is making me really mad, I wonder what’s up with that?” Is one I ask myself a lot. Observing yourself and your thoughts this way really changes how you respond because you’re taking responsibility for how you feel.

When we label things as bad we put extra meaning on it that may not be the truth. Look to your situations and figure out when and where you do this the most. What are your worst triggers or patterns of unconscious behavior? When do you react without thinking? Where are you so boxed into your feelings you can’t slow down? What triggers you so badly you react without thinking?

Many times the events of our lives feel like defining moments. Something we achieved, or failed at becomes who we are. This’s a chance to step back and be curious. Is this (event, situation or result) really who I am? The answer will always be no. It’s your attachment to it that makes it feel that way. The roles we play and the successes or failures we experience become who we are and when that ceases to be the case, we fall apart. What if who we are is way more than these things? (Another powerful question).

And lastly, in many situations that seem wrong, bad or negative, we’re instantly paralyzed, feeling out of control in our lives, depressed about our lack of influence on our own situation and made to feel worthless. The problem here is we aren’t seeing the nudge for action. Many times fear takes over and we forget we can move through it just by using awareness, choosing different thoughts, calling a friend, journaling about it, meditating, breathing, or moving our butts.

Action is the magic potion for all desires and for all pain. The definition of action is what gets us confused. Sometimes action is just slowing down, clearing our minds, feeling our feelings and processing what’s happening in a more calm, grounded, centered way. That’s some powerful action. And sometimes it’s getting motivated to speak or express ourselves. Action can be about reaching out to someone and it can be about drawing or painting through your feelings.

When things are going wrong and you realize you’re stuck in a pit of desperation, sadness or fear; remember to get curious. Feel what’s there. Step outside of yourself and observe your thoughts. Start to ask questions that’ll shift your perspective, and create healthier ways to think, believe and act. Then make the most powerful move you can make; take positive, on-purpose, inspired action, and sit back and wait for the shift.

Join me in the comments and let me know what other big questions you like to use!

50 Cent Tried Yoga — but It Wasn’t What He Expected: ‘I Thought I Was Going to Stretch in a Sauna’

Yoga is harder than it looks!

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson got that rude awakening when he took his first yoga class, and finally learned the truth behind the deceptively difficult practice.

“I didn’t know what I thought I was going to do.  You know, you go to yoga. I thought I was going to stretch in a sauna, just stretch and have a good time,” 50 Cent tells Harry Connick Jr. during Thursday’s episode of Harry.

“It started out good and then the ladies started going faster and faster. It was difficult moves for you to put your body in different spaces and I was like, ‘what?’ and I’m looking around to see if other people are having the same experience. I ended up in a class that was a little to advanced for me,” the rapper admits.

50 Cent says he overestimated his fitness ability going in.

“You can’t just step in thinking you can do what they do because you see these hot girls going in the room with the yoga mat,” he says. “You’re like, ‘I can do that, whatever they doing in there.’ No, you can’t.”

50 Cent is no stranger to exercise, though. In 2010, he spent three hours on the treadmill a day and followed a strict liquid diet to drop over 50 lbs. for his role as a football player who is diagnosed with cancer in All Things Fall Apart.

‘One Million Moms’ Is Going Totally Ballistic Over This New Zales Ad

Protesters in Standing Rock are being brutalized, white supremacists are rallying in Washington, D.C., and we’re hurtling toward a climate disaster. But don’t worry, anti-gay group One Million Moms is tackling the real problems facing our nation. Namely, a jewelry commercial showing a nice lesbian couple getting married.

The moral panic-enthusiasts released a statement this week decrying Zales for the new ad that, in a montage of couples and families, includes two women in wedding dresses happily exchanging vows.

“Zales is using public airwaves to subject families to the decay of morals and values, and belittle the sanctity of marriage in an attempt to redefine marriage,” wrote One Million Moms, apparently unaware that the actual definition of marriage already includes same-sex unions.

Their statement instructs fellow bigots to travel to Zales stores and tell managers (who surely have absolutely nothing to do with the company’s advertorial decisions) that they won’t shop there due to the commercial.

There are, of course, some legitimate reasons to criticize Zales, like promoting the huge scam of diamond engagement rings in the first place. But their inclusive commercial isn’t one of them.

A Shark Going Inland Is My Chief

Tracing the origins of the Hawaiians and other Polynesians back to the shores of the South China Sea, archaeologist Patrick Vinton Kirch follows their voyages of discovery across the Pacific in this fascinating history of Hawaiian culture from about one thousand years ago. Combining more than four decades of his own research with Native Hawaiian oral traditions and the evidence of archaeology, Kirch puts a human face on the gradual rise to power of the Hawaiian god-kings, who by the late eighteenth century were locked in a series of wars for ultimate control of the entire archipelago. This lively, accessible chronicle works back from Captain James Cook’s encounter with the pristine kingdom in 1778, when the British explorers encountered an island civilization governed by rulers who could not be gazed upon by common people. Interweaving anecdotes from his own widespread travel and extensive archaeological investigations into the broader historical narrative, Kirch shows how the early Polynesian settlers of Hawai’i adapted to this new island landscape and created highly productive agricultural systems.

Going Indie: 25 Things You Should Know Before Self-Publishing Your Book

Self-publishing used to be the last resort when an author had exhausted all other channels. Self-publishing meant that your book wasn’t good enough for a traditional publisher. Even if you knew your sales would be virtually nil, you self-published because your vanity required it; you self-published so that you could say that you had published a book, even if it never sold a single copy. Since the e-book explosion, self-publishing no longer carries the stigma it did a few years ago; it is no longer considered equivalent to vanity publishing. If you choose to go independent, your luck is that self-publishing has become a whole lot easier in the last few years since the advent of the digital age. Self-publishing is no longer a last resort, but a conscious choice that comes with many advantages over traditional publishing. The technology available today has made it possible to self-publish in both electronic and paperback versions, even if you don’t have a penny to invest in the process. The electronic book market is growing, and publishers have traditionally paid lousy royalties on electronic books. Despite your lack of publishing experience, you might have a better chance making money if you self-publish rather than pursue a traditional publisher. But knowledge is power, and it is crucial to educate yourself on the process and be aware of the factors that might influence your decision. Going Indie: 25 Things You Should Know Before Self-Publishing Your Book, offers a number of tips that will raise your awareness of the benefits of self-publishing over traditional publishing.

When Dyson makes a hair dryer, it’s going to be quiet, powerful, and pricey

In a few months, the hum of hair dryers at your local salon might get a little lower if Dyson has its way. From vacuums to fans to hand dryers, Dyson certainly likes to focus on suction and airflow. It’s not really a surprise, then, that its first beauty product is a very pricey hair dryer. The company unveiled its $ 399 Dyson Supersonic hair dryer today. Gray and purple, the blow dryer looks Dyson-made and resembles a handheld showe rhead or microphone more than a traditional hair-styling tool. It took Dyson four years and $ 71 million to develop the device, which includes its new V9 digital motor. In 2013, patents revealed the company was working on a “silent” hair dryer. While it’s not calling the Supersonic hair dryer soundless, Dyson does say the device’s pathway cuts down on agitation and its 13 motor impeller blades emit a tone that’s inaudible to the human ear.Related: Dyson is looking beyond vacuum cleaners to developing electric cars It’s less noisy, but it also won’t scorch your hair, Dyson promises. The device contains a thermistor, which is a resistor that measures the temperature 20 times per second, so the microprocessor can adjust the amount of heat delivered, depending on which of the four settings you select. Air is delivered in a high-pressure stream at a 20-degree angle and there are three different strength settings. There’s also a setting to deliver a blast of cold air when hair is dry. The three attachments — a concentrator for a “blade” of air, smoothing nozzle for a wider airflow, and diffuser for defrizzing — snap on magnetically to the hair dryer. Ultimately, the 1.82-pound Supersonic solves four problems often encountered with traditional hair dryers, company founder James Dyson said it a statement: They’re heavy, inefficient, loud, and damaging. The Dyson Supersonic doesn’t go on sale until this fall and will only be available through Dyson or Sephora. We’ll have to wait until then to see if the nearly $ 400 dryer does all it promises.

Going for What I Need

When I was a pre-teenager I attended an “adults only” class in – German. The threshold was set at 16 and I was about 12, but they made an exception since they had no groups of my age and skill level. The downside was that the assignments were way over my head. I recall one paper we had to write that asked us to give our opinions about a statement of playwright Bertolt Brecht, “First the food, then the moral”. At my age, I was simply unable to ‘get it’. What was this all about? Many years later I learned that humans go through specific stages of moral development, and that some things that seem nonsensical at one age, become more relevant or meaningful sometime later in life.

What the German novelist was suggesting was that basic needs, like food, trump moral decisions. In other words, people can be ethical or fair only after they have met their basic needs. Not before.

This story was brought back to my mind by a news comment on how the California drought was causing farmers to dig deeper into the groundwater reservoirs. The reason is clear, as any farmer involved would explain: I simply need the water! If we have to dig a bit more, so be it. The crops are at stake. If we don’t water, they don’t grow. No crops, no business. No vegetables (or fruit, or wine, or raisins, or well fed cattle) to sell. No income. Consumers should see the point too. According to California law, anyone has the right to drill a well on their property and groundwater pumping is expected to replace 75 percent of the surface water deficit.

But something else is happening. With this increased sourcing of deeper groundwater, we are creating a vacuum in the deeper layers of the earth – and what happens when you take a brick out of a pile? The pile sinks. So the ground is sinking – at the scary rate of 2 inches a month in some places. This is two feet in a year.

Let me be share with you the candid question that I asked myself first: If my ground is higher or lower, what does it matter? Unless there is a sinkhole, of course. But those things don’t happen in California, only in Florida – (or do they?)

The answer came rapidly: sinking ground means that the very well sinks too. And so well owners just do what’s common sense – they dig deeper. “We are reaching into water levels that have been stored there for millions of years”, reflected Kim Hammond, a representative of Arthur and Orum Well Drilling Inc. in Fresno. It doesn’t stop there. Structures like roads and bridges also sink and break. This means that road safety is at stake, and insurance companies may take a look at this and, before going broke, review their premiums! Which may affect car owners and the trucking companies. In addition, the loss of roads will have an impact on transportation of goods, on the mobility of people, and on emergencies. Sinking grounds have exhumed pipelines that are supposed to be protected under the earth; moreover, the slope of the land can be altered, thus changing drainage patterns. Which can mean flooding. Which in turn can lead to the urgent necessity for additional money from tax payers. How much? No one knows. “No agency is tracking the sinking statewide, little public money has been put toward studying it and California allows agriculture businesses to keep crucial parts of their operations secret”, writes Nathan Halverson in Mother Jones.

And then, when the underground water sinks even a few inches upstream, it inhibits the flow downstream, making the picture even worse. Something I, as a Californian farmer, may not think of, since I am busy digging my well deeper because I need the water.

The big lesson that we are being taught is that thinking of what I need is never -ever- disconnected from considering what is best for us all. Until we learn this, we will be experiencing — and struggling to deal with — more and more systemic consequences.

You may call it moral or not. It’s simple connectedness, a law which we, self-centered as we are, cannot escape. The reason? That’s just how nature works.

Keywords: water, California, drought, farmers, Bertolt Brecht, water wells, Fresno, nature.

Love Kim Kardashian West’s Style? This Budget-Friendly Line Is Going to Be Your Everything

Over the past few years something chic has been happening to Kim Kardashian West‘s style (and it may or may not have to do with the Kanye closet rehaul that left her in tears). Gone are the loud animal prints and sparkle of her 2009 closet, replaced by sleek, minimalistic outfits in neutral and monochrome palettes. And while the majority of Kim’s actual wardrobe is high-end designer, Australian label Bossa has captured the same vibe with wallet-friendly prices (and the brand ships to the U.S.!).

kim-kardashian-body-suit-pencil-skirt-outfit

Last summer Kim lived in a bodysuit, showing favoritism to the American Apparel style she rocked several times. Bossa’s got an equally steamy version, plus an elongated faux suede pencil skirt that really finishes off the look (the entire outfit will run you a little over $ 150 in U.S. dollars).

kim-kardashian-turtleneck-black-dress

Kim’s LBDs usually hit at her calf, and while some have plunging necklines, others are actually pretty covered up. She foreshadowed this fall’s favorite neckline (get ready for the turtleneck trend!) by rocking a slim-fitting frock with a mock neck. Bossa’s similar version is online here.

kim-kardashian-long-vest-outfit

And while KKW loves her some pencil skirts and tight dresses, she’s also cut a stylish figure in wide-leg trousers. She covered up her creamy pair with a long vest in the same palette, but the look works in contrasting colors too. The Aussie brand created the same ensemble with a tank dress that doubles as a vest when worn open.

The coup de grace for Kim style lovers? There’s a high-gloss pink dress on offer that looks to be very much inspired by the latex looks she’s rocked.

Louis C.K. Debuts New Special Online Before Going On Hiatus

Louis C.K. announced Friday that he’ll be taking an “extended hiatus” from his much-loved series “Louie” in order to pursue other projects. But Saturday, the comic revealed a consolation prize for fans: He’s released a new special on his website called “Live at Madison Square Garden.”

Sure, it’s not all-new material. Some of the Madison Square Garden show, he explained in a letter to fans, was repeated from his last special, “Live at the Comedy Store.” BUT some of it wasn’t. So if you didn’t make it to New York City to watch any of the last three shows he did at MSG — most of you, probably — parts of it will be new to you. It costs whatever you feel like paying, anywhere from $ 1 to $ 85.

Louis C.K. continued on in his letter to let us know he’s having a good summer, and feels pretty good about the world, even though parts of it are “a huge mess.”

“I hope you’re all relatively okay or better,” he wrote. “I hope that nobody shoots anybody today. What are the odds of that? Low. But I hope it.” Same.

Going Head-to-Head With Your Inner Enemy: Using ‘The Tools’ to Unlock Your Full Potential

2015-07-01-1435779923-4689171-stutz_p_michels_b_web_0.jpg

Therapists Barry Michels and Phil Stutz are creators of “the Tools,” a set of practices to help you move past self-limiting behaviors and transform challenges into opportunities. Here’s how the Tools can help with that part of you–often referred to as the saboteur, the shadow, or your inner enemy–that Michels and Stutz call Part X.

Omega: You describe how people can use the Tools to do battle with Part X, also known as their inner enemy. Does there come a time in using the Tools where it feels less like a battle and more peaceful?

Phil: I have a saying that peace is an active state of mind. We’re trying to combine the sense of peace with the necessity for constant work. Peace was often defined as something languid and laid back, a state where you can fold your tent up, stop making an effort, and stop being vigilant. That’s not what peace is.

The only infinite thing about a human being is their ability to keep on struggling with no end point. If you’re willing to do that, you’ve tapped into an infinite part of yourself that can then connect to the infinite forces in the universe, and that is peace. As far as I’m concerned that’s the only peace. That’s why I say peace is an active state of mind.

Barry: I like to illustrate this with a triangle. The lower part of the triangle is an eternal battle between you and this inner saboteur. If you engage in the struggle and keep fighting it, what happens is the top of the triangle emerges and at the top of the triangle is your higher self. It’s a part of you that transcends the lower level and can view the struggle from a higher perspective and be at peace with it. These two levels happen simultaneously, the struggle and feeling integrated and completely at peace.

Omega: How can you be sure Part X hasn’t taken over the Tools and is using them for its own end, like posing as your Inner Authority?

Barry: Part X doesn’t want you to use tools at all. Its first strategy is to get you to forget them entirely. In my case, I was always amazed at how I could work all day with patients, exhorting them to use the tools, and then somehow “forget” to use them when I went home at night.

Once you come up with ways to remind yourself to use the tools, Part X still discourages you from using them. When you use them and you get a good outcome, it suggests you no longer need them. When you experience a failure or setback, it tells you they didn’t “work,” so there’s no point in using them.

If all else fails, it likes to pose as a powerful inner authority who knows you better than you know yourself. If you study it carefully, you’ll notice it uses a harsh, finger-pointing, punitive, judgmental tone. When we work with people, we try to shift that tone to one that is supportive of every effort you make — whether you succeed or fail.

Phil: If the voice inside you is telling you to quit, it’s almost definitely Part X. It’s either going to tell you that you don’t need to do it anymore, that you’ve got this solved, or you don’t have to make anymore effort because you or the situation is hopeless and helpless, so why bother.

Omega: Is it easy to learn how to use the Tools if you’re not used to being self-reflective or self-aware?

Phil: I try to focus on what someone wants to change and just bang on that over and over again. I try to give as little theory as I can and instead give them tasks that include what I like to call student study — I ask them to study themselves. I also get people to draw pictures. When I ask people to draw a picture of Part X, no one has ever said, “What the hell is that?”

Omega: What’s the biggest thing to watch out for with Part X?

Phil: There seem to be three basic rules in the universe: part of life is pain; part of life is uncertainty; and part of life is endless work. And none of these ever go away. What we see in almost everyone is the idea of a realm of illusion where you will be exonerated, or exempt from these three rules of the universe. I call this the “snapshot realm,” because we have a picture of this perfect place in our mind, but this place doesn’t exist. Part X wants you to believe that this illusory realm is real, and once it does it can pretty much have its way with you because it’s making you a false promise.

Barry: An example of the realm of illusion might be romantic relationships. Most young people go into romantic relationships expecting to walk hand-in-hand into the sunset with the music swelling. People expect this moment to last forever. But that’s Part X’s demonic way of inflating someone’s expectations to a point where they will inevitably be crushed. It’s like commercials for exercise equipment that tell you you’re going to lose weight just by buying a treadmill but don’t mention that you’re going to have to get yourself to use the treadmill. The Tools will get you to use the treadmill.

Almost Going to Jail Taught Me How to Give!

I have learned about giving through the experience of receiving. There have been a lot of people in my life that gave to me, when they didn’t have to, when there wasn’t anything in it for them.

I haven’t always known how to give in my life, I spent a lot of it, not knowing how to give love, not knowing how to give my gifts and talents not knowing I had anything to give.
I learned slowly from a few very special people in my life how to give.

My teachers come to mind. I’ve never really had a relationship with my father, he’s always seemed like a ghost, somewhere out there, but just out of my reach.

I think subconsciously I created a lot of my teachers to be men, strong healthy role models of the healthy masculine to heal the old father wound. They were all available, attentive and loving.

I needed that. It has been very healing for me.

I ran away from home as a really young teenager and moved to Hawaii. I never knew there were people out there that wanted to help me just because, just to help, when I ran away that wasn’t my experience. Everyone wanted something.

Before I found my calling God sent me an angel named Sean, I was struggling and had gotten into some trouble with the law, and I honestly didn’t know what was going to happen. Out of desperation, fear and intense emotional pain I started going anywhere spiritual!

I met Sean in a spiritual community, he took me under his wing.

Every time I went to court it was so demeaning and scary, everyone treated me like I was already guilty, but not Sean, he was an amazing loving teacher. He taught me how to sit with people, how to love them and be there for them when things got hard.

I remember telling him, I’m so scared, I don’t know if I’m going to jail! I have no idea what I could do to help another person right now!

He would say “Yeah just come with me, we’re all going to go sit and be with some people who are suffering, just talk from your heart and give them what you can in the way of love.”

I thought what’s wrong with him! Doesn’t he see I’m messed up! Doesn’t he see I’m the one that needs help!?

But I just kept showing up whenever there was an opportunity to talk with someone struggling with cancer, or a teenage girl who had been molested. I just showed up and tried to help.
It changed everything, I just couldn’t wait until Sean and our little team of helpers went out to be with another hurting soul. I suddenly felt I wasn’t an awful person, I wasn’t so lost.
It gave me a reason to live again.

When I first met Sean I was so worried about the case that I spent hours of many days crying on my bathroom floor, then Sean would call and say “Hey what are you doing, wanna sit with some hurting folks?”

I mean, I thought it couldn’t be any worse than sitting on my bathroom floor crying. That gift he gave me of being able to give love to another soul was like medicine for my spirit.

I began to feel like, Hey Ama, you might be able to really help people! And you Really love it!!!”
I started thinking less and less about my situation and more and more about the next time I could get back out there with Sean and the team!

A seed was planted in my soul.

I learned from Sean that no matter how much you are hurting inside, how dark things get, you can still give, that in fact that IS the medicine that will give you the will to live again! To bring meaning back into your life! That’s what happened to me.

I found that in life you can make mistakes and lose everything and in losing can be great winning.

I ended up taking a plea that the DA offered in my case, I was just too terrified to go to trial and gamble and maybe win but maybe lose.

I was on probation for awhile, lost all my money spending thousands of dollars defending myself and in fees.

I lost a lot of friends that couldn’t handle the intensity of my situation. But I wasn’t as focused on me and my situation anymore, I had found this new world of giving and being of service, and I couldn’t get enough!!!

I remember going to endless court hearings thinking, I can’t wait to get out of here and go sit with someone that’s hurting! It’s the only thing that saved me and kept me from the deepest despair and from giving up.

I kept going out with Sean and the team. I started to realize when I was sitting with hurting ones, I would get information about them, I had a gift, I could tell what was going to happen or what had happened to them before.

I would touch them on the hand or their head and they would start to feel better. I found that I knew how to talk with them and somehow they would be feeling better and filled with hope after we talked.

I began to find my calling as a healer.

The worst thing that I thought had ever happened to me, turned out to lead me to the best thing that ever happened… finding my gifts and my calling…. and the joy of being of service and giving!

That experience of receiving unconditional love from Sean taught me not to judge people too harshly, as you never know their story and how they got to be where they’re at.
Sean knew my situation but he chose to see something good in me, he chose to see that I had something to offer and I started to believe him!

He didn’t talk to me about giving, he made me go out and do it!

It was extraordinary! Sean taught me that the way to heal is to GIVE!

It was the most amazing thing, at my lowest point, I was asked to serve another human being and it healed MY hurting soul!

Yeah, I’ve learned a lot from my teachers. I’ve learned how to give, really give and the absolute joy that comes from giving is addictive!

Once you reach out to help another person, no matter what is going on for you in your life, you’ll never stop, and you’ll always know how to find your way back to yourself by reaching out and finding someone that needs your help. You’ll find that you’ll get hooked on that feeling of love and giving and you’ll never turn back!! I didn’t!

People Are Going Crazy for This Supermodel With Legs the Length of an Average 7-Year-Old

chinese-supermodel-long-legs-dong-lei

The world’s going crazy for Dong Lei, a model who was on Chinese reality show Supermodel and has legs that clock in at 45 inches—a.k.a. the approximate size of a seven-year-old girl. In China, the average height for a woman is 5’3″ (63 inches), meaning Lei’s legs would be over 70 percent of their total stature. In the U.S., the typical female is 65 inches.

To put those super stems in perspective, we present the below:

35 inches: The average height of a mature Great Dane, measured from shoulder to floor.
40 inches: Karlie Kloss’s legs.
53 inches: Tyrion Lanister (a.k.a. Peter Dinklage), fully standing.

NBC Told Marta Kauffman That ‘No One’s Going To Watch A Show About People In Their 20s’

Showrunner Marta Kauffman had to deal with quite a few obstacles in creating “Friends” (including, but not limited to, misogyny). One of the comments she received from NBC early on nearly nixed the now iconic setup for the cast.

“We were told by the network, ‘No one’s going to watch a show about people in their 20s,'” she said. “[They said], ‘You have to have an older person.'”

Of course, the show had nearly 25 million viewers in its first season. Though you, dear Internet, need no reminder of how beloved “Friends” was and always will be.

That concern from higher-ups was one of the reasons Kauffman almost had to bring in “Pat the Cop,” aka, as moderator Ben Blacker put it, “America’s favorite lost character.”

As the lore would have it, Pat was suggested by one executive as an older figure who would provide the characters with relationship advice.

Kauffman was vehemently against bringing on Pat or a similar figure — one of the other ideas was a “Coffee Joe” — and insisted that she could make audiences care about such a young set of characters without a more mature presence.

“We kept saying, ‘If the stories are universal enough, you don’t need it.'” She eventually met executives’ requests by bringing in Rachel Green’s parents. (Later, Monica’s and Ross’ parents were also a big presence.)

“It felt more natural,” Kauffman said. “That’s how we decided to deal with the note. And this is what I always tell writers: you’ve gotta deal with the note somehow.

R.I.P. Pat the Cop. May you live on forever in “Friends” trivia posts.

Natalie Portman Explains What She Learned Going Through ‘Dark Moments’ At Harvard

Attending Harvard University, said actress Natalie Portman, “changed the very questions I was asking.”

Portman, a 2003 graduate of Harvard, was the keynote speaker at Harvard College’s Class Day on Wednesday. Portman joked up front that she had wanted some comedy writers for her speech because at her Class Day, Will Ferrell was their hilarious speaker. She didn’t get anyone to help her craft jokes, she said, and so Portman’s speech largely focused on her explaining how she confronted her own doubts when she went to Harvard.

In high school, she was voted most likely to be a contestant on “Jeopardy,” which Portman said was “code for nerdy.” But when Portman came to Harvard, after the 1999 release of “Star Wars: Episode I” that she starred in, she was worried she’d be viewed as unworthy and only gotten in because of her fame.

“I got in only because I was famous — this is how others viewed me and how I viewed myself,” Portman admitted. Portman said she would have some “pretty dark moments” as a Harvard student.

“There were several occasions I started crying in meetings with professors, overwhelmed with what I was supposed to pull off when I could barely get out of bed in the morning,” she recounted.

Bouncing between researching about underground groups for her role in “V for Vendetta” and making the stoner comedy “Your Highness,” among other films, Portman said she learned to find her own meaning and not have her success determined by box office receipts.

Portman learned as she studied for her role in “Black Swan” that “the only thing that separates you from others is your quirks, or even flaws.”

“There was a reason I was an actor,” Portman said, “because I love what I do and I saw from my peers and my mentors that was not only an acceptable reason, that was the best reason.”

Going to a Wedding? Don’t Be That Guest

‘Tis the season for attending weddings! Are you going to a wedding (or five) this summer? You too can flawlessly navigate the unspoken rules of weddings and avoid any guest gaffes with these tips from real-life brides and grooms.

Couple Conundrum: Late or Missing RSVP’s
Recent bride and groom, Emma and Adam, had large extended families and a wedding venue with a small capacity, meaning they weren’t able to include some friends on their original guest list simply because of space. When a sizeable chunk of RSVP’s failed to arrive, they assumed those guests weren’t planning to attend and decided to extend invitations to those they didn’t quite have room for originally. Unfortunately, their assumption was incorrect. More responses than they bargained for eventually rolled in and affected guest counts — which ultimately affected their budget and caused some serious stress with venue capacity.

Pro Tip: RSVP on Time
Do the couple a favor and RSVP as quickly as possible, and certainly before the requested date. The RSVP card is one of the most important planning tools the couple has, but they need your cooperation for it to be effective. Show your enthusiasm and excitement for their big day by responding promptly. Texting doesn’t count! And don’t assume you have a plus one, unless the invitation specifically says so.

Couple Conundrum: Duplicate Gifts
Last summer, brides-to-be Danielle and Stephanie spent weekend upon weekend meticulously curating their registries at various department stores, only to be gifted not one, but three of the same gift that wasn’t on their registry. After trying to return two of the three identical gifts, they discovered that the credit had been applied back to the gift-giver’s credit cards, much to their dismay…and embarrassment!

Pro Tip: Use the Registry
The registry is there for a reason. Stick with it to avoid putting the couple in a potentially awkward situation. If you can’t find the couple’s registry ask a member of the family or bridal party. There are exceptions, of course, like personal and meaningful gifts, gift cards and cash.

Couple Conundrum: Specific Dress Codes
When Becca was invited to an Indian wedding last year, she did her research on what to wear (at Indian weddings brighter is better!) and found a beautiful jewel-toned dress as opposed to something with a more neutral or conservative tone. She had an amazing time, felt beautiful and fit right in with the party. Three cheers for doing homework in advance!

Pro Tip: Do Your Homework
A wedding is not the place to flaunt your new avant-garde look! If you’re unsure of the dress code, use the season or the wedding venue as a cue. Be sure to do your research, too, in case there are any important cultural preferences you should be aware of. And if all else fails, just ask a bridesmaid! They can always give you the scoop.

Couple Conundrum: Unwanted Social Sharing
Facebook and Instagram may be great ways to share life’s special moments, but be careful. In many cultures it’s considered bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding. Last fall one groom, John, unintentionally saw his bride, Juanita, before she walked down the aisle. One of Juanita’s bridesmaids had posted a photo of her getting ready on Instagram before the wedding had begun!

Pro Tip: Post with Caution While the overzealous bridesmaid certainly didn’t mean any harm, it’s a good lesson for us all. Be mindful with social media — especially at weddings — as posts can have unintended but serious consequences. Even though it’s tempting to post throughout the event, remember it’s the couple’s special day, so look for any guidelines. If you don’t see any instructions, just follow the couple’s lead!

Regardless of the situation, you can be sure that you don’t want to be that guest! You know the one. Avoid anything that makes you the center of attention. It’s never fun to have regrets the next morning. Pace yourself with the bubbly, participate in the activities, dance your heart out and have a blast celebrating. Just be sure to keep yourself in check. Soak in every moment of this special day and show your support for the newlyweds!

Why The Itsy Bitsy Bikini Trend Isn’t Going Anywhere Anytime Soon

Hawaii gets a lot of flak for being behind on trends, but when it comes to swimwear, the Aloha state is definitely ahead of the curve.

And we know something mainland beaches don’t: cheeky bikini bottoms are about to sweep the nation.

The Brazilian bikini bottom — the barely-there style of the ’80s — has been resurrected in new and more modest ways, and this time, bikini experts say, it’s here to stay.

“The [Brazilian bikini] trend is growing,” Debbie Wilson, owner and designer of Maui Girl Bikinis, told The Huffington Post. “I don’t see it losing popularity.”

everyone

You Can Thank/Blame Social Media

Wilson has been designing all types of bikinis for 30 years. When she first opened her boutique on Maui, Brazilian-cut and thong bikinis weren’t in much demand. Now, Wilson says, they make up 75 to 80 percent of her overall sales.

The resurgence has swept Hawaii over the past five years, and signs of it are just now beginning to pop up on the mainland. Victoria’s Secret, perhaps the most mainstream swimwear brand, has introduced an “Itsy” option as well as a “Cheeky” option, and San Lorenzo, the Hawaii-based boutique that specializes in the Brazilian-cut, has recently branched out with stores in Newport Beach and Malibu as well as a pop up shop in the Hamptons — the paragon of East Coast prep and propriety.

Those in the industry say the surge in popularity may be related to the rise of social media.

Sabra Krock, creative director for the swim boutique Everything But Water, told The Daily Beast that the recent “fitness craze” is to thank for the cheeky trend, “as well as the Instagram and selfie voyeurism that’s online,” she said.

“I definitely point to Instagram as a key reason for a desire to emulate celebrities,” she said.

Once You Try It…

The trend may have only recently reignited, but Mariella St. John, marketing director for San Lorenzo Bikinis, says that this style “is one that you can never go back on.”

Today’s line-up of Brazilian-cut bikinis offers more modest designs, making the style more accessible. While veterans and daredevils might still opt for super thin thongs or the showy v-line swimsuits of the late ’80s and ’90s, more modest options like cheeky boy shorts now exist.

These new designs, Wilson says, are “turning into g-strings again, but with more details, like a waistband, or shorts that still fit you in a way a [thong] would.”

Contrary to what you may think, Wilson explained, smaller bikini bottoms have a “slimming effect” on your rear end.

“Women are starting to realize that the [smaller cuts] are more flattering,” she said.

Finding Your Fit

When choosing the right cut, Emma Wo, fashion blogger at AlohaBabe.net and Miss Hawaii 2015, says “it’s important to find a style that works well with your body type. Brazilian-cut bikinis can seem daunting at first,” she told HuffPost, “but if you’ve got curves, full-coverage bikinis can actually make you look wider.”

“When customers, who have never worn our bikinis, come into the store, we tell them, ‘We’re going to convert you,'” St. John said. When her customers find the right fit of a cheeky bikini and then go back to a traditional cut, they often tell her that the regular bottoms feel like a “diaper.”

For comparison, here’s a traditional cut next to a Brazilian cut on the same model at a San Lorenzo boutique:

slbikini

If you’re shy about jumping in to a full Brazilian bikini, Naomi Newirth, co-designer of Acacia Swimwear, says to find somewhere in between and start there — “not full coverage and not a total Brazilian cut,” she told HuffPost, “no extra sag or fabric.”

Acacia Swimwear’s 2015 collection features cheeky bottoms that still maintain moderate coverage, like the ones featured below. Bikini model Chelsea Yamase also suggests Mikoh Bikinis, for a similar style.

If you’re still nervous about making the switch, bikini blogger Rebekah Steen of Gold Fish Kiss says, “Just give it a shot. At least once. Life’s short, try it out, and get some sun on your buns. You’ll be surprised how wearing just a little less fabric on your bum makes it look just that much better.”

Below, we’ve rounded up some of the best in-between cheeky bikinis so you can try the trend out for yourself.

All I care about is Paige now, I can’t help it. Well, also Henry. He’s is just the cutest, dumbest little brother that ever lived, and I should know because I have one. But Paige! I love that Elizabeth hates her church so much. Best quote? “Potluck, poster making, sing-a-long” is the best description of church groups I have ever heard.

And then the tension. Granny’s back. Stan is at Marthas. We are heading into a finale and the stakes are higher than ever before. Are we all having mini strokes every Wednesday? Here are some of my favorite freak outs:

I do hope they don’t kill Martha because they think she tattled. Next week is the finale and I don’t know if I’ll breathe during it all. But never fear, they’re already working on next year:

16 Shocking Allegations In Scientology Documentary ‘Going Clear’

The Church of Scientology has long been a controversial institution among both the religious community and entertainment business. But the latest documentary from Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney, “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” explores the secrets of the organization through interviews with former high-ranking officials and former members in a way never seen before.

Based on the 2013 book of the same name by Lawrence Wright, “Going Clear” not only exposes details about Scientology but also serves as an in-depth explainer for those unfamiliar with the group. The Church has spoken out against the film (read their full statement here) as have its celebrity members. But whether you’ve studied Scientology closely or merely know it as “the religion with Tom Cruise,” watching “Going Clear” is a powerful, stunning and emotionally overwhelming experience that will likely leave you with your mouth agape. Here are the most shocking allegations put forth in “Going Clear,” which made its HBO debut on Sunday night:

1. L. Ron Hubbard’s Scientology creation story
When Scientologists reach level OT III, they are shown the “secret materials,” as director and former member Paul Haggis described them: Hubbard’s hand-written account of the creation myth. According to this, 75 million years ago a galactic dictator named Xenu froze people and dropped their bodies into volcanoes. From there, the disembodied spirits, or thetans, apparently jumped into newborns bodies. According to Hubbard, these multiple thetans crowded in our bodies are the source of our anxieties and fears.

2. Hubbard spent time in a black magic cult
Before founding Scientology, Hubbard befriended rocket and chemical engineer Jack Parsons who was a part of black magic cult Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO), which followed the teachings of Aleister Crowley. According to “Going Clear,” Hubbard became Parsons scribe and assistant on a magical operation to impregnate a goddess-like woman to create the anti-Christ.

3. Members were allegedly thrown overboard as punishment
Hubbard created Ethics, or punishments for his auditors who made mistakes during sessions. They were then pushed overboard on his ships into the water, which was “30 feet, 35 feet” below, according to Hana Whitfield, one of the original Sea Org members.

4. Hubbard told his second wife he murdered their daughter
When Sara Northup, Hubbard’s second wife, threatened to leave him unless he got psychiatric help, he reportedly kidnapped their daughter Alexis. According to written accounts from Northup, Hubbard told her he “cut [Alexis] into little pieces” and dropped her in a river. Then he would call back and tell Sara that their daughter was alive.

5. There was a Scientology “prison camp”
Former Church member Sylvia “Spanky” Taylor, who was once the liaison between the Church and John Travolta, was sent to the Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF), or what she described as the “prison camp where you’d go for re-indoctrination.” According to the film, when sent to the RPF, people would have to do hard labor for “30 hours on, 3 hours off,” eat table scraps and sleep on dirty, wet mattresses.

6. The FBI raid on the Church was the biggest in history at the time
On July 8, 1977, the FBI raided Scientology’s Los Angeles, Hollywood and Washington, D.C. locations, which at the time was the bureau’s biggest raid ever.

7. The Church stole government documents
According to the film, in the ’70s, many Scientologists were directed to get jobs in Department of Justice and IRS offices in order to steal documents against or relating to the Church.

8. The Church apparently has a blackmail folder on John Travolta
According to Wright in the film, when there were rumors of Travolta wanting to leave Scientology, the Church created a “black PR package” that has “all the damaging material” from his private auditing sessions. Travolta also reportedly refused to have his sessions video taped, but secret cameras were hidden anyway.

9. The Church investigated the IRS
One of the Church’s goals was to be recognized by the IRS as a fully tax-exempt religion, according to former senior executive of the Church Mark “Marty” Rathbun. Thousands of Scientologists reportedly filed 2,400 total lawsuits against IRS employees, and private investigators were sent to IRS conventions to obtain information. According to journalist Tony Ortega, Scientology leader David Miscavige told the IRS commissioner that the lawsuits would go away if the Church was given tax-exempt status. The Church was granted exemption in October 1993.

10. Tom Cruise and the Church allegedly wire-tapped Nicole Kidman’s phone
According to the film, the Church noticed Tom Cruise slipping away from Scientology during his marriage to Nicole Kidman. Cruise reportedly said he wanted to have Kidman’s phone wiretapped, which the Church did at his request.

11. Cruise may have had employees pimp his cars for 40 cents an hour
Sea Org members make 40 cents an hour, according to Ortega, who says, “I don’t think there’s any way Tom Cruise is not aware of that.” According to the film, they have “tricked out his cars and motorcycles” and hanger in Santa Monica, California, and installed the audiovisual equipment at his home.

tom cruise

12. The Church supposedly found Cruise a new girlfriend
According to Wright, Cruise was “overheard to complain that he needed a new girlfriend” when he was in Spain at the opening of a new Scientology center. The Church then found a young Scientologist, Nazanin Boniadi, and reportedly had her braces removed, bought her $ 20,000 of clothes and colored her hair “to Cruise’s liking.” She was then told she would be Cruise’ girlfriend, but the relationship soon ended. Boniadi apparently signed a non-disclosure agreement with the Church and has since become a well-known actress in “Homeland,” “Iron Man,” among other films and shows.

13. Paul Haggis left because of the the Church’s homophobic stance
Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis (“Crash,” “Casino Royale”) left Scientology in 2009 after 30 years when his two gay daughters told him how they were being treated and harassed by the Church. According to Church doctrines, the religion views homosexuality as a disease. Haggis then wrote a now-famous letter of his resignation from the Church.

paul haggis daughter

14. Scientology’s book value is about $ 1.5 billion
Ortega obtained recent tax records that revealed the main three tiers of the Church (which is a non-profit organization) have a combined book value of $ 1.5 billion.

15. Sea Org members were allegedly tortured to the sounds of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”
In 2004, Miscaviage apparently ordered the top members of the Sea Org to live in what was known as The Hole in the Chuch’s secret Gold Base in California. In the film, former members say they were told to confess their crimes against the Church in order to leave The Hole. Beyond beatings and one man being ordered to “mop up the bathroom floor with his tongue,” another method of abuse was when members were forced to play musical chairs to “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Those participating were “fighting to stay” in the Church: whoever didn’t have a seat when the music stopped was expelled from the Church.

16. If members leave the Church their friends & family are forced to “disconnect”
The biggest reason to not leave the Church for many Scientologists is fear of “disconnection.” This is when all friends and family members still with the Church are told to cut ties with those who leave, or those deemed Potential Trouble Sources (PTS), or Suppressive Persons (SPs). Many former members included in the film haven’t seen or spoken to their family or friends since they left.

“Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief” airs again on Monday, March 30 at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO.

The Loft Is So Much Better Than You Think It Is Going to Be

The Loft is a surprisingly entertaining film that keeps the audience in the dark as to its villain(s) until the very end. The fact the ending is logical and difficult to anticipate makes this movie an above average feature. There is also some solid acting from a cast not particularly known for the type of roles they are inhabiting.

The premise of the film is that five friends partner up to buy a loft where they can have complete privacy. Vincent (Karl Urban) is the man with the plan but his buddies Luke (Wentworth Miller), Marty (Eric Stonestreet) and Philip (Matthias Schoenaerts) eagerly commit to their share of payment and accept their keys. All of the men are married but this does not seem to be a problem except for Chris (James Marsden) who intends to be faithful to his wife (Rhona Mitra). His fidelity lasts until he meets Anne (Rachel Taylor) and falls completely in lust.

Now all five men are using the lift for their various trysts. Everything is going smoothly until one morning they discover a body in the bed. Since there is no sign of a break in and the alarm code has been entered they become suspicious of each other. Still all claim complete innocence, but in this film no one is who or what they claim to be.

Both Urban and Marsden have more screen time than the others so they could be considered the leads. However in this movie the supporting players get to have the meatier scenes. Stonestreet who is best known for his current role on Modern Family as Cameron, is a complete surprise here as the drunken, woman chasing Marty. Equally good is Miller, who once starred in the Fox series Prison Break. Here he is an intellectual and also a shy man.

The movie operates with a present day story interspersed with numerous flashbacks. In many movies this has proven to be an annoying way of telling a story and I generally prefer a linear approach. In this film, however, the back and forth storytelling works. Each flashback provides another peeling back of a layer of deception. There is one “aha” moment after another.

In The Loft movie the women are not the prominent players but Isabel Lucas and Taylor, who play Sarah and Anne, manage to make their presence known. Both are beautiful women and that adds to the validity of their roles.

The movie is rated R for violence, profanity and nudity.

The Loft arrived with little advance fanfare so it might not even be on your entertainment radar. If you like movies that keep you in the dark until the reveal then this is a movie you want to see. Believe me, it is so much better than you think it is going to be ,

I scored The Loft a high up 7 out of 10.

Can artists Procreate Without Going Bankrupt?

I’m a member of two different Facebook groups that have frequent postings; one of them is a group for moms, many of whom also happen to be artists. The other one is a forum for classical singers, a few of whom happen to be parents. There isn’t a lot of crossover topics between the two groups — but this week, unrelated to one another, I read a post on my classical singer group asking whether people who had kids felt that it affected their careers as singers, and another post on my mom’s page asking whether any artists that were also parents were managing to keep their artistic careers going while still staying afloat financially. Where the crossover between these two queries occurred was mostly in the comments section, where people who were artists and parents explained how they managed to keep from moving their families into cardboard boxes, and what sacrifices they had made in order to add children to their lives. Everyone said that whatever sacrifices they had made were worth it, and they wouldn’t change a thing. But almost all of the commenters with kids mentioned that either they or their spouses had moved into some sort of academia or other work in order to pay the bills and remain at least somewhat financially stable. The number of people who had moved in different directions than their original artistic intentions was almost everybody. Most people said they were content with where their choices had led them, but it lead my mom’s group to start a discussion about why it’s next to impossible to be an artist — and especially a couple in which both people are artists and self employed — and make a go of having a family.

For opera singing parents, the challenges are quite extraordinary. Because not only are there all the challenges of being a self-employed artist, whose income is sporadic and difficult to predict, and who has no health or retirement benefits from their job, but we must factor in the concern that our jobs require constant travel, which makes adding a child into the mix pretty insane. Not only do we have to arrange extra plane tickets and different accommodations than may be provided by the company for whom we are working — usually at our own expense — but we have to arrange childcare in a strange place, ahead of time, without even having a chance to meet with the candidates. So a mother must bring her child with her to a strange place, and the very next day leave them with a strange person while they go to rehearsal. Or we leave our child with someone back home for a long period of time. The fees of opera singers have notoriously dwindled in recent years, and the competition has made jobs less available and less frequent. After a singer pays a coach to help them learn their role, and lives in a strange city for several weeks without pay, they then get a lump sum for their performances, of which 10-20 percent gets paid to an agent, and another 15-30 percent should be set aside for taxes. After deducting the costs of monthly health insurance (probably at least $ 700-1000 per month for the singer and child) and any retirement that could be set aside (ha ha — we wish) that doesn’t leave the singer a lot to work with. And I’m not only talking about struggling singers, I’m talking about singers who sing in the major opera houses around the world. And if you’re adding onto that the extra expense of travel, accommodations and possibly childcare, you are left wondering why you bothered to leave your house in the first place. And while other types of artists have different challenges, almost all of them face rising expenses and dwindling profits, and share similar concerns to we opera singing parents.

Which leads me to the question; should artists even bother to procreate? Is it fair to our children that we lead such financially itinerant lifestyles? If someone wants to have a family, shouldn’t they just do the responsible thing and get a “real” job?

The problem with this line of questioning (which so many artists face from friends, family and strangers sitting next to us on airplanes and in coffee shops on a daily basis) is that it really does question whether being an artist is of value to a society at all. Because if having children is so impossible for someone who works as an artist — and I’m not even talking about a struggling “wannabe” artist, but someone who actually makes a living as one — then it suggests that it is not a career worth being compensated for, but merely an avocation for a young and untethered person who doesn’t mind living la vie boheme, using old chairs for firewood and eating sardine sandwiches.

I bring this up because there are other countries who consider these problems. There are countries who provide health care and education to all their citizens (Sweden, Denmark, Norway — most of Europe actually), who provide paid maternity leave to expecting mothers (and fathers) even if their jobs don’t (Canada), who give stipends to every family for each child they have (Germany), and who even have government sponsored excellent childcare as well as insurance for artists who are between jobs (France). Many of these countries also have state sponsored arts funding, coincidentally. So artists are paid pretty well, and don’t have to go around worrying all the time about how they are going to make ends meet. Artists are acknowledged as being participating, contributing members of society, and their worth isn’t taken for granted. Yes, the citizens of these countries also pay higher taxes — but not that much higher considering all the benefits they are offered.

So we’re back to the same question I ask so often in my blog posts — why doesn’t America value artists more and allow for them to continue to contribute without constantly worrying about financial collapse? I’m not talking about handouts — I’m talking about extensive tax breaks for childcare, and access to truly affordable health care, and community support to the organizations that create art so that they can pay artists fair wages. I’m talking about wage earning that is commensurate with education, and acknowledgement that arts organizations enrich communities both fiscally and socially.

Coming full circle back to my Facebook forums and where they intersect — parents all over this country are struggling to make ends meet because of things like childcare and healthcare. Artists all over this country are struggling because of lack of income, lack of jobs and lack of government support. In a way, artists are prepared to make excellent parents because they are used to finding creative solutions to financial hurdles, something most parents have to do many times in their child’s lives, regardless of their occupation. But this isn’t the only thing that can make artists great parents. Artistic parents can’t help but encourage artistically minded children, whether that means artists or merely arts supporters. And we desperately need more people who believe that creativity is a vital arm to our society. So we need artists to keep procreating so we can make a new generation of people who are willing to think creatively and who think of artists as necessary members of their community.

So I say to all artists; go forth and procreate. You are creative. You will figure out a way around the financial and logistical hurdles which you will encounter. And you will hopefully become part of the village so essential to other artists in your community also raising families.

And also; nothing inspires creativity quite like trying to have a conversation with a toddler.

‘The Interview’ Porn Parody Is Really Going To Upset Kim Jong-Un: Hustler Boss

Nothing screams freedom of speech like a good ol’ American parody porn film.

Hustler boss Larry Flynt announced that he’s producing a parody version of ‘The Interview’ as a response to the film being pulled from theaters amid threats by hackers linked to North Korea.

Sony’s move was criticized by President Barack Obama, as well as Hollywood A-listers like George Clooney and Sean Penn.

But Hustler Video is not backing down. The parody, which is titled “This Ain’t The Interview XXX,” will be released first quarter of 2015.

In “The Interview,” Seth Rogen and James Franco travel to North Korea in a plot to kill leader Kim Jong-un with an exploding tank shell that blows off the dictator’s face. What raunchy surprises will the Hustler treatment of the film have in store?

“If Kim Jong-un and his henchmen were upset before, wait till they see the movie we’re going to make,” Hustler founder and chairman Larry Flynt said, according to AVN. “I’ve spent a lifetime fighting for the First Amendment, and no foreign dictator is going to take away my right to free speech.”

Is this the debut of Ben Affleck’s penis on-screen?” MTV’s Josh Horowitz asked the star during a recent interview.

“I try to get it in every movie,” Affleck joked before talking about the importance director David Fincher placed on letting it all hang out, literally. “There may be some very brief nudity,” he said. Watch the interaction below.

5 Realistic Ways to DIY Your Wedding Without Going Into the Red

It’s no secret that wedding planning can be a rabbit hole to an empty bank account if you allow yourself to get too carried away. That’s why more brides (and even their supportive grooms) are turning to do-it-yourself projects as a way to cut costs and create a completely customized aesthetic. But it’s easy to underestimate the amount of work (and precious time) it takes to achieve a certain look. Before taking the DIY plunge, it’s important to establish a creative vision for your big day. From there, you can then separate the details into “to DIY” or “not to DIY” categories before embarking on a craft supply spending spree, only to realize you could have saved money by renting or hiring someone to execute certain elements.

For those of us who aren’t queens of crafting (let’s be honest, that’s most of us) or don’t have bottomless budgets, making wedding décor can be a daunting task. Here are five simple elements you can DIY that are (practically) foolproof and won’t break the bank:

1. Centerpieces and Table Décor. Collect various vessels of different sizes, shapes, colors and heights such as vintage bottles, teacups and drinking glasses from your cupboard. Group them in interesting ways, placing anywhere from three to seven in the middle of the table, and fill them with different florals, feathers, berries, pinecones and even pods, acorns or sticks collected from your yard. For example, one table might have a vintage brass pot with a succulent planted inside, a low ceramic vase can hold large bright blooms, while a delicate glass beaker with long ethereal greenery adds a lush feel. One of our favorite couples collected miscellaneous vessels for months, saving bottles from grocery items, perusing flea markets and dusting off family heirlooms. They grouped them at each table with florals of different heights and shapes hand-cut from their garden in addition to loose ones from the florist. The result: a boho-chic menagerie that delighted guests and made for great table conversation.

2. Favors. Invite guests to take one of your handmade table setting arrangements with them at the end of the reception. If you want something more uniform, baked goods in brown paper bags tied with baker’s twine and a tag have a homemade feel. One of our couples knew there would be excess dessert at their wedding, so they placed brown paper boxes near the table towards the end of the night, and invited guests to take treats to go, sealed with a custom sticker ordered inexpensively online. Favors don’t have to be extravagant, just thoughtful.

3. Programs. You don’t have to be a graphic designer to make eye-popping programs. While you may want to get some design inspiration from an Etsy vendor, or a website like Wedding Paper Divas, it’s easy to add that little something extra to your printed pieces. One of our couples glued one side of their card-stock program to large popsicle sticks for instant fans — perfect for their orchard wedding in the heat. They had their program file printed, and painted the sticks for added pizzazz.

4. Photo Booth Props. Lots of couples are opting for photo booths to capture images of their guests on their special day. The best part of the photo booth is, of course, the props! We’ve found it’s so simple to cut out bow ties, mustaches and lips from funky patterned paper and attach to striped paper straws. Collect old hats from friends, family or thrift stores along with boas and glasses. You can also make crowns out of paper, and embellish them with rhinestones, ribbon or feathers from your local crafts store. Put all your props in a basket with a hand-drawn sign or chalkboard.

5. Cake Topper. Forgo the porcelain bride and groom figurines. Think about what is special to you as a couple. If you met at a baseball game, that ball you caught, causing you to fall into your destiny (literally), might make the perfect topper. Fresh flowers from the rose garden you so lovingly tended together, or fresh pine branches from the spot he proposed are all easy, inexpensive and meaningful ways to add that finishing touch to your cake. Some of our favorite cake toppers have included fresh cut greenery with a few well-placed blooms on a plain white cake and a bird’s egg found outdoors in a nest, embellished with the couple’s name and a few craft feathers.

Remember, your guests are there for you — not to be wowed by an over-the-top affair. Above all, have fun and know that all these little things add up to one special day that signifies the beginning of your new life with the one you love the most.

Eat Your Way Out Of Going Gray

While we love seeing Kelly Osbourne’s hair walk the line between ‘Hitchcockian’ tones of grays and lilacs, we all know the dirty truth — most grays don’t look as chic as her hair does on the red carpet. And so gray hair will forever be something we wash out, cover up and altogether deny.

Going for an AHA Moment: From Manolos to Meditation

When I decided I wanted to learn how to meditate, I went on a search to find the perfect place to do it. What I found was that it was not as easy as I thought it would be. Learning to meditate the right way was expensive; time-consuming (often two-hour time slots or six- to eight-week programs); and inconvenient (late-night classes). I wondered why there was no drop-in meditation studio for people like me with young children, jobs and limited time resources. Talk about an AHA moment! Suddenly, I could think of nothing else. In one split second — goodbye, fashion editor. Hello, spiritual entrepreneur.

The meditation studio I wanted to create would be clean, modern, secular and effortless to attend, with inspirational and user-friendly teachers. It would be a happy, friendly environment for both those who had never before meditated and those who understood it well, but still wanted to learn more. Never mind that I was hardly a yogi — or that my previous career had been as a fashion editor at Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, and Glamour magazines. True to my optimistic nature, I figured, if I wanted such a place, so would everyone else.

I was on a mission to not only learn to meditate for myself, but to create the perfect place for others as well. Research was the best part. I took a four-day intensive Vedic meditation course, a six-week mindfulness course at UCLA, did four of Deepak and Oprah’s 21-day meditation series and took classes anywhere I could. I did one-on-one sessions with superior teachers like Steve Ross and Will Dalton, and consumed every book, blog and podcast I could find.

My meditation went something like this: breathe, focus, let go, fantasize (about how to make the classes better, shorter, more powerful), then back to my focus point.

So, with a limited budget, I gave myself a year to make this happen. I used my career as currency. In exchange for invaluable advice and services from my talented friends, I offered everything from hours of free media training to closet makeovers. Meetings about opening a new business are always stressful, but I sandwiched them in between interviews with prospective meditation instructors (the benefit being free, guided meditation for me). I’m sure I had the equivalent of two MBA degrees and a master’s in construction, but it was all worth it.

Unplug Meditation is the tangible result of a whirlwind year of planning and working to make an “AHA Moment” a reality. But the intangible results are immeasurable. I am much calmer than I ever was in my previous fashion life and far more passionate about what I am doing. And even though another side effect from meditation has been a lessening of my desire to shop, I can’t deny that I still appreciate a pretty pair of Manolo’s.

Unplug meditation studio opens next month. Check it out at unplugmeditation.com.

Relax, You’re Going to Be Criticized

What are you bracing against?

The Practice:
Relax, you’re going to be criticized.

Why?

The title of this practice is a little tongue-in-cheek. What I mean is, most of us — me included — spend time worrying about criticism: past, present, and even future. Yes, try hard, keep agreements, “don’t be evil,” etc. But sooner or later – -usually sooner — someone is going to point out the error in your ways. Often in subtle versions that still have an implicit criticism, such as giving advice, helping or teaching when you don’t really need it, making corrections, comparing you negatively to others, or focusing on the one tile in the mosaic of your actions that’s problematic while staying mum about the 99 other good tiles.

In other words, criticism is unavoidable. Sometimes we take it in with good grace, other times it stings, and sometimes both are true. As profoundly social human animals, it is natural for criticism to sting sometimes. But whatever sting is inherent, we add to this pain with the jabs we give ourselves.

This “bonus pain” — a self-inflicted wound — includes continuing the criticism inside your head long after the other person has moved on. Or pounding o n yourself way out of proportion to what happened; on the highly technical 0-10 Messing Up Silly Scale (MUSS), what you did was a 2 but on the related 0-10 Fiercely Undoing Self-worth Scale (FUSS), you are lambasting yourself at a 5 or even 10: not fair at all. Or ignoring all your many other good qualities — the other 99 tiles — while ruminating about the criticism.

We also jab ourselves with needless pain when we brace ourselves against possible future criticism, or play needlessly small to avoid it. In many cases, the criticism is never going to happen or it’s very unlikely or even if it did happen it would not be a big deal. We tend to transfer into adulthood expectations we acquired as children, or as younger adults. Maybe there was a lot of criticism from someone back then but you’re probably in a different place today. I’ve spent way too much of my life hunkering down or over-preparing to preempt an anticipated shaming attack… that would not occur anyway.

And even if the criticism does come, will it actually be the terrible experience you dread? Usually not. You can roll with it, take what’s useful, form your own conclusions about the person making the criticism, learn and move on. Accepting criticism as inevitable and refusing to live under its shadow will free you up and make you happier.

How?

When criticism, even subtle, comes your way, pause and try to sort it out in your own mind so you’re sure you understand it. Sometimes criticism is narrow and specific, but often it’s vague, general, and has multiple things mixed up in it (e.g., some statements are accurate but others are exaggerated, tone, content, rationale, values). Slow down the interaction so it doesn’t go off the rails. The ancient emotion centers in the brain get about a two second head start over the more recent logical centers, so buy yourself some time for all the resources inside your head to come on line. Meanwhile, shore yourself up by thinking about people who like or love you, and by remembering some of the many ways you do good and are good.

Once you understand the criticism in its parts and aspects, make your own unilateral decision about it. A fair amount of the criticism that comes your way is flat out mistaken. The other person is wrong on the facts or doesn’t understand the larger context. Think of the many scientific theories that were initially scorned but have proven correct over time.

Of the criticism that remains, some is preferences or values disguised as thoughtful suggestions. For example, when you’re driving, suppose the passenger says you should slow down or speed up when actually you are perfectly safe and the other person just likes it slower or faster. Some people value closeness more than others; just because you like more cave time than your partner doesn’t make you cold or rejecting; nor is your partner smothering or controlling; it’s just a difference in values: grounds for inquiry, compassion, and negotiation, but not criticism.

Another chunk of criticism coming at you is thoughtful suggestions disguised as moral fault finding; now your passenger says you should be ashamed of yourself for endangering others when in fact all you need to do is back off another couple of car lengths from the car in front of you on the freeway; you’re not reckless but could be more skillful.

Then there is that which is worthy of healthy remorse. It’s up to you to decide what this part is. Feel what’s appropriate, learn the lesson, make amends if they’re called for, know that you’ve done what you could, ask yourself how much remorse or shame you’d want a friend to bear who did whatever you did, and then see if you can ask no more or less from yourself.

Knowing that you can handle criticism in these ways, let yourself be more open to it. Don’t stonewall or intimidate others who have a criticism for you; then it just festers or bursts out in other ways.

But also don’t walk on eggshells to avoid trouble (unless you’re in a dangerous situation, which is a different sort of problem) or obsess or over-plan to make sure you make no mistakes. A close friend is an extremely successful professor at a top-of-the-food-chain elite university, and I asked him once what led to his success. He said that while his colleagues/competitors were perfecting their one paper, he was finishing three of his own; one of these would be rejected for publication, one would come back with corrections he could make, and one would be accepted immediately; then when the inevitable criticisms did come down the road, he’d already moved on to his next three papers.

Mostly, just recognize that criticism in its various forms and flavors (and smells) is a fact of life. So be it. Our lives and this world have bigger problems, and much bigger opportunities. Time to live more bravely and freely.
