Brother-in-Law Surprises Groom in Wedding Dress During Couple’s First Look: ‘It Was So Funny!’

Heidi Zherelyev, of Tempe, Arizona, has always been a prankster. So she just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get a laugh out of Val Zherelyev before they wed on June 30.

For the couple’s first look — just before they said their “I dos” in a sweet ceremony at The Gathering Place — Heidi enlisted the help of her older brother, Eric Dodds, to slip into a wedding dress, stand in her place, and surprise her unsuspecting husband-to-be. Photos of the funny moment showed Val laughing with a shocked expression when he saw Dodds in the white, form-fitting gown and brown tennis shoes.

“I was totally convinced it was gonna be Heidi. As I turned around, it was just so unexpected. It took me about five or six seconds to process what was happening. It was just so funny,” Val, 26, tells PEOPLE. “I’ve known Eric almost 10 years … seeing him like that was totally out of his character. It was hilarious.”

Heidi says she and her friend Chelsea had been cooking up the prank for several months before the big day, intending for the joke to “break the ice and get rid of the wedding-day jitters.” Chelsea even lent her own wedding dress from her big day for the joke, and Dodds didn’t join in on the fun until the day of the ceremony, Heidi, 25, says.

“I sprung it on him last minute,” Heidi recalls. “He was a little apprehensive at first, but of course he obliged. Because he’s my big brother and he has to. Once he started putting on the dress, he transformed into the character of the bride.”

She adds: “He had fun with it. We were making jokes. He was putting on my deodorant and perfume so he’d smell more girly.”

In the silly shots, Eric is shown playfully touching the gown. And he and Val even posed for a wedding photo of their own.

“I’ve never seen him do anything remotely close to something like that,” Val tells PEOPLE. “Being a big brother, he kind of stepped up. I was anxious to see … and having that happen threw everything off the rails for a second. But then it put the cherry on top of the day.”

The photos quickly made their way around the interview, amassing thousands of “likes” on Facebook since they were first posted last week.

But Heidi says Dodds still doesn’t understand just how “famous” he is as a result of the viral photos.

“He’s in disbelief,” Heidi says of her brother. “He hasn’t even really seen how far this has spread. We tried to explain to him … girls are even asking who the guy in the dress is. He can’t believe that something so silly and normal for our family, that people think it’s so great.”

She adds: “He’s always been such a good older brother to me. This was just natural of him to help his little sister out and make her wedding day the best that he possibly could and do his part, as silly as it may have been..”

Emotional Groom Loses It When He Sees His Bride Coming Down The Aisle

When groom Conner Courtney saw his bride Hannah make her way down the aisle, he was overcome with an intense rush of emotion, breaking down in tears.

The groom’s mom Kara recorded the powerful moment from the couple’s wedding earlier this month, and uploaded it to Facebook where it has been viewed more than 1.8 million times at the time of publication.

“I had to turn my back and breathe or I was going to lose it once the music started,” Conner told The Huffington Post. “I told Hannah’s brother [who was officiating the wedding] to tell me when she was there so I could turn around. The moment I saw her was like seeing my entire life right in front of me.”

“I’m usually good with handling my emotions, but after seeing her and her smile, it was tears of pure happiness and a radiance of love,” the groom said. “I wanted to express that to her, and that’s how it came out.”

Conner and Hannah — who first met at the gym in 2013 — tied the knot at the bride’s uncle’s home in Arcadia, Oklahoma on June 13 in a rustic-style celebration. Hannah told HuffPost that she “figured [she] would get a few tears out of Conner” at the ceremony, but was still taken aback by his passionate reaction.

“All I could do was smile the biggest smile and cry the happiest tears,” she said. “The look on Conner’s face made my heart feel like it was going to burst because I felt so full of love. But when I look back at that day now, I really am not surprised by his reaction because he shows me that much love every day.”

Groom And His Mom Go Head-To-Head In Epic Dance Battle

Every Saturday morning when Evan Hegge was growing up, he, his sisters and his parents would do their chores while listening to the radio and dancing around the house to pass the time.

“We would make fun of my parents for how they danced and they would make fun of how we danced,” Hegge told The Huffington Post.

So when Hegge tied the knot with Jenna Van Heek on Saturday in Yankton, South Dakota, he and his mom Pam incorporated the family pastime into the big day and went head-to-head in a surprise dance-off in front of all of the guests.

“The only people who knew were my immediate family and the DJ,” Hegge said. “In fact, Jenna told me the day after the wedding that after my mom and my slow dance to ‘What a Wonderful World,’ she was really bummed we didn’t do anything. She thought we were lame until the dance-off took place.”

At the reception, Hegge and his mom hit the dance floor, bustin’ a move to a medley of popular songs including “Get Up Offa That Thing” by James Brown, “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls, “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” by Wham and “Teach Me How To Dougie” by Cali Swag District.

“Everyone seemed to love it and kept asking if someone recorded it,” Hegge said. “It was great watching people smile and laugh. That’s what I love most about the dance-off is that it makes people smile and laugh, which everyone needs in their life.”

To find out which Hegge is the reigning dance champ, watch the video above.

This Creative Bride And Groom Had A Bunch Of Puppets Officiate Their Wedding

Los Angeles couple Tammy Caplan and Joe Gold are actors, writers and independent filmmakers. Needless to say, they both share a colorful imagination.

So when the couple of 15 years tied the knot in April 2015, they let those imaginations run wild and opted to surprise guests by having puppets officiate the wedding ceremony. Six puppets to be exact — a main officiant, a rabbi, a judge, a ring bear, a captain and a wedding crasher.

The bride and groom wrote the script for the puppets together. Caplan told The Huffington Post that they both were fans of “Sesame Street” and the Muppets growing up.

“Joe and I wrote the ceremony fairly quickly,” she said. “After we talked out what we wanted to do, the first draft took about a day. It was a blast to write! We’ve written several scripts together, but this was one of the most fun writing projects.”

The couple worked with the Puppet School of Los Angeles to make their puppet officiant dreams a reality.

“Our parents kept asking us, ‘Who’s the officiant?’ and we said, ‘It’s a secret,'” Caplan told HuffPost. “We were a little nervous they wouldn’t like the idea but they loved it. The guests had tons of fun which was exactly what we wanted for our wedding.”

After the ceremony, the puppeteers walked around with their puppets and interacted with the wedding guests. Later during the breakfast reception, guests were invited to make their very own puppets. And at the end of the day, the couple hosted a special dance where everyone brought their puppets onto the dance floor.

India May Have Just Published Its First ‘Gay Groom Wanted’ Ad

An newspaper in India — where gay sex was made a criminal offense in 2013 — just ran what may be the country’s first man-seeking-man matrimonial ad.

The ad, which ran this week in MiD DAY, an English-language newspaper in India, seeks a husband for Mumbai-based equal rights activist Harish Iyer. Iyer’s mother submitted the ad and was rejected by three other publications before MiD DAY accepted it.

In a Facebook post, Iyer thanked MiD DAY and its editor, Sachin Kalbag, and shared an image of the ad originally posted by Gaysi Family, an India-based gay rights group.

thanks Mid-day, thanks Sachin Kalbag

Posted by Harrish Iyer on Tuesday, May 19, 2015

The ad, which reads, “Seeking 25-40, Well-placed, Animal-Loving, Vegetarian GROOM for my SON (36, 5’11”) who works with an NGO, Caste No Bar (Though IYER Preferred),” was rejected by The Times of India, The Hindustan Times and the website dna, Iyer told BuzzFeed.

None of those publications responded immediately to HuffPost’s request for comment.

The ad has sparked some criticism for its closing parenthetical, “Though IYER Preferred.” Iyers are an upper-class rank of India’s caste system with which Iyer shares a name. He defended that portion of the ad to HuffPost India, saying it was a way for his family to try and match him with someone of a similar upbringing.

“My Mom would be happy if it was a Dalit Muslim yet vegetarian and animal loving guy,” Iyer said. “But she would love it if he happens to come from a familiar territory that she knows about. So, not really caste discrimination. It’s like you (author) saying that I would love people from any caste as an alliance, but I would love to enjoy machher jhol (fish curry, a Bengali staple) with him if he was Bengali.”

Although The Times of India refused to print the ad, it interviewed Iyer about his decision to create one.

“My mom worries about me too much,” he told the paper. “She is constantly thinking that I am getting old, will be alone, and all those concerns a mother has. So, she and I had a discussion last week and decided to go ahead with placing a matrimonial ad looking for a gay person.”

“My mum called me this morning saying three people have responded so far,” Iyer continued. “She asked me what to do next, how to proceed, so I told her, ‘proceed like you would have if you were looking for a girl for me.'”

In a statement to BuzzFeed, Kalbag said running the ad was a no-brainer.

“A marriage is a meeting of minds, of souls,” he wrote. “At mid-day, we believe that human rights should be applicable to all, regardless of religion, caste, colour, sexual orientation, etc. Therefore, a mother seeking a union for her gay son is perfectly normal. Why should it be any different? In fact, why should we even be talking about it? In an equal society, which we all strive for, this should be routine.”

5 Things the Bride and Groom Must Do for Themselves Even if They Have a Wedding Planner

A wedding will not plan itself with little attention from the bride and/or groom, even if you hire an experienced, professional wedding planner. I’m sorry, but that’s the facts of life. You can find the best planner in the world and pay her a ton of money and give her an unlimited budget (which rarely, if ever, happens), and she can do the vast majority of the planning for you; however, there are some decisions the bride and groom must make.

Some couples reading this must think it sounds crazy that some brides and grooms have so little interest in their own wedding details because they’re up to their necks in every last detail of their own wedding plans. But some engaged couples don’t have time — legitimately — to take on the minutia of dealing with all the decisions, contracts, vendors, etc. They want to hire somebody to do everything for them.

And we can do most of it. While it makes me uncomfortable to choose certain things on behalf of a client whom I’ve never met that lives thousands of miles away, if they tell me it’s my choice and they don’t want to deal with it, it’s my job. With that said, there are five things that brides and grooms MUST do for themselves, even if they have a wedding planner:

1. You must plan your own wedding ceremony. We give our clients a planning guide that’s easier than Mad Libs but some of them still put it off to the very last minute and are surprised they have to do it themselves. I cannot choose the vows a couple will exchange during the wedding ceremony. These are serious promises you’re making before your friends and God (or whatever/whoever you believe in) and you have to decide what you want to say. The “charge to the couple” — basically the instructions for married life — is something else important for the couple to select based on their own beliefs about marriage. The one and only time I was left with absolutely no vows from a groom, the bride and I substituted some Dr. Seuss vows that were hilarious. It worked, but did it really mean anything for their lives together?

2. You have to decide whether you’re taking your spouse’s last name or not, and how you want to be introduced to your guests at the conclusion of the ceremony and when you make your grand entrance at the reception. I can name you if you want me to, but seriously folks, that’s a pretty major thing. If she’s not taking his last name, there can be blowback from older, more traditional guests if we make it obvious so there are ways around that. And with same-sex weddings, it’s even trickier because they have more options. I have to know what you want to be called or I can’t do it properly at your wedding. Neither can the minister.

3. Even if you don’t know anything about flowers, you have to show me a picture of a bridal bouquet you like, and give me some sort of clue about how you want your wedding décor to be planned. There are literally thousands of example pictures on our Facebook, Instagram and other social media pages — look and pick something you like. You can really send me a picture of anything from anywhere and I’ll work with you on that, but telling me that you want it to be “simple” and you “hate pink” does not give me enough information to plan a “dream wedding” you’ll have to look at in pictures for the rest of your married life.

4. Honorees who are being asked to give toasts at your wedding must be selected by the bride and groom, in advance. Otherwise, you’ll have a never-ending, round robin of wasted guests jumping up to grab the microphone and add their two cents about you in front of all your family and friends. After a few cocktails, everyone thinks they’re a comedian. Toasts become roasts. And it can go on forever, burning up precious dance and party time at the reception. Obviously, as the wedding planner, I have no idea who you’d like to have toast and without that information, I have no way to control what will actually go down at your wedding. You should discuss your selections AS A COUPLE and give your wedding planner the exact names of who you’d like to have say a few words. If this is hard for you, stick to tradition and have the best man, maid of honor, parents of the groom and parents of the bride offer toasts, in that order. And of course, the bride and groom should toast and thank their guests when everyone is finished.

5. Your wedding planner cannot choose your wedding music. I will not take responsibility for selecting the songs you will process and recess to at your wedding ceremony. I won’t choose your entrance or first dance song for your reception. If you forget a last dance, I’ll figure something out, but the others are too meaningful for a complete stranger (because that’s really what I am even if you have met with me once in person when you visited the island) to choose them for you. Beware the wedding planner who leaves your blanks in the hands of a bad DJ — you could suddenly hear “Pour Some Sugar on Me” blasting after you cut the cake, or bonafide stripper music during the garter removal and toss. Funny as we think it is, you don’t want “Closing Time” to be your last dance song even if that’s how the staff is feeling when your event finally ends. But if you didn’t take the time to fill out the music request forms (and the “do not play” list) ahead of time, you just never know what you’ll hear playing at your wedding.

Trust me when I say this blog is oversimplified — I have a lot of clients who eventually do want to make decisions they initially put into my hands. And then we have to redo all the work we’ve already done. Be sure that you truly don’t care when you say you “don’t care” or you’re putting everybody through hell planning, and re-planning, your wedding details.

And just for the record, the next time a bride tells me that she “doesn’t care” what her wedding cake looks like or what flavor it is, I’m going for something incredibly weird and whacky just so I can blog about it and prove a point. Maybe chocolate with peanut butter filling, decorated with their names and wedding date spelled out in mini Reese’s cups would be fun? Enough of me being nice and finding them neutral cakes I can decorate with pretty flowers. They said it was up to me, right? I’m going to have some fun with it.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Weddings in Vieques and Sandy Malone Weddings & Events.

This Bride And Groom Have Mastered The Art Of The Geek-Chic Wedding

This couple just proved that when it comes to weddings, the terms “geek” and “chic” are not mutually exclusive.

Actress-singer Saab Magalona and musician Jim Bacarro tied the knot on January 25 in Baguio, Philippines. The pair found some cute and clever ways to incorporate their favorite things — books, comics and superheroes — into every part of their wedding…

“I made these myself from my old and beloved Archie comics,” the bride told The Huffington Post. “Some people are outraged about the fact I cut up some pages of comic books, but I grew up with these comics. I have so many, and I thought of it as recycling something that was dear to me. Something new out of something old.”

“Jim wanted to incorporate ‘Star Wars’ in the reception by doing a light saber entrance,” Magalona said. “We were on the fence about it because it might be too much. But exactly a week before the wedding, we decided to go for it. I said if he wanted to do it, he should do it because it’s our wedding day and we could do whatever we wanted!”

“Our event stylist’s parents happened to have a lot of old medical books,” the bride said. “As soon as I told my stylist that I wanted it to be a library theme but that I didn’t want any books harmed, she said, ‘Perfect, my parents’ medical books got flooded in the garage last year!’ She only nailed the hard covers to the backboard. The pages, though yellow and mostly unreadable, were untouched.”

Magalona told HuffPost Weddings that despite the nerdy details, she wouldn’t quite call it a “geek-themed wedding.”

“If we had a theme it was more of ‘Jim and Saab’s favorite things,'” she said. “I love books, he loves superheroes. It was all chop suey, but we were lucky it ended up coming together nicely.”

Groom Makes Wedding Vows To 3-Year-Old Stepdaughter In Emotional Video

On his wedding day last January, NASCAR driver Brian Scott recited vows to not one, but two of the important ladies in his life: his bride Whitney Kay and her then-3-year-old daughter Brielle.

The couple tied the knot on a snowy day in McCall, Idaho. At one point during the ceremony, Scott bent down so he could be eye-to-eye with Brielle and made a heartfelt promise to love and care for her, no matter what.

“I promise to always hold your hand and skip with you down the street and bring comfort to your life,” he said. “I vow to make you say your prayers before you eat. I promise to read you stories at night and to always tuck you in real tight. I vow to show you how a man should treat a woman in my relationship with your mother. And above all else, I vow to protect you, care for you and love you forever.”

The emotional video — shot by wedding videographer PenWeddings — was posted to YouTube last year, but recently resurfaced and went viral with more than 350,000 views at the time of publication. HuffPost Weddings caught up with Scott on Wednesday and reminisced about that snowy day last year, which he called “emotional and surreal.”

“I always felt like my vows to my wife Whitney would maybe affect me more and I would get more choked up during those, making those promises to her,” he told The Huffington Post. “But I misread that one. It was really when I was reading my vows to Brielle that I got the most choked up. It really all just hits home in that moment — you’re there and dressed up and all the people around. You’re living in the moment. It affects you more than when you write it or plan for it or practice it. You get engulfed by it.”

The Scotts, who live in Charlotte, North Carolina, first met through mutual friends in 2011. In November 2014, they welcomed a baby boy named Joseph. So far, Scott says he’s really enjoying fatherhood.

“Just being there for [the kids] and enjoying family moments together and playing with them and hearing them laugh and seeing them smile — all of those things are so much better than any of the negative aspects people like to bring up about having kids. It’s not baggage — it’s great addition [to my life].”

I hope one day he knows this feeling…

Groom Goes All 1849 And Pans For Gold To Create Wedding Bands

Scottish groom John Greenwood has set his own kind of gold standard for wedding rings.

Instead of visiting his local jeweler like most guys, Greenwood, an explosives technician, spent 18 months panning for gold in the Scottish mountains to make wedding bands for bride Morag Shearer and himself in time for their September 25 nuptials in Antigua. He used just a simple gold pan, trowel, shovel and rake to collect the tiny nuggets and specks.

“They talk about gold fever,” he said. “I was panning for gold in my dreams. I was driven by it. I reckon I spent 20 full days getting enough gold for the ring.”

Over the course of a year and a half, he found about 70 grams of gold, which he then gave to goldsmith Grant Logan to create the two rings. According to Logan, that is a lot more than most people in Scotland are able to find in a lifetime.

“Everybody says I must have beginner’s luck. I’ve always been interested in the idea of gold panning but I never actually did it until 18 months ago,” John said.

The approximately 22-carat rings are considered “Scottish gold,” which is a rare type and one that is not commercially available.

“I feel very proud of John and very lucky,” the bride said of her hubby’s efforts.

In 2011, Greenwood also spent three months panning for gold to create an engagement ring for Shearer.

“I’ve been incredibly lucky to find so much gold to make a ring but I was out there every weekend and in the evenings before it got dark in freezing cold water. I certainly put a lot of effort in,” he said at the time. “Some days I’d be camping next to the river and I’d start as soon as the sun was up and carry on for 14 or 15 hours a day.”

We’re just so glad it panned out for these two.

6 Things The Groom Secretly Wants At Your Wedding

By Sarah Zlotnick, Editor, WeddingWire

It takes two people to get married—which means two people get to weigh in on their wants for the wedding! You may have had a secret Pinterest board dedicated to the big day since high school, but that doesn’t mean your groom’s opinion is only worth half a vote. Make sure he feels just as satisfied by recognizing these wedding day desires—and then delivering on them.

1. To have his voice heard—from the beginning
You’re in this together, and that means planning together. What that doesn’t mean: having perfectly equal input in every decision made. Take a look at a planning checklist (WeddingWire has one that is organized by month), and divvy up the tasks. Trust him to complete his to-dos with your best interests in mind, and you’ll have a happy groom who will feel proud of his prep work when the big day arrives.

2. Respect for his guests (including those rowdy college roommates)
Sure, some of your groom’s long-time friends might have a rambunctious reputation—and the last thing you need is for one of them to plow over Grandma on their mad dash to the dance floor. But, banishing his people to the far corners of the reception space is a sure-fire way to make him feel second rate at his own wedding. If you’re truly worried about their behavior, try this compromise: save the plum tables for the wedding party and close family, then seat your friends and his friends at a similar spot in the room, like right by the bar. This will give them a chance to mingle, and it will show your groom that your respect for his friends is on par with your respect for yours.

3. A moment that’s all his
Which can be…wait for it… the rehearsal dinner! If his idea of a good time veers drastically from your agreed upon wedding vision, let the party before the party be his time to shine. BBQ, lawn games, a beer tasting—whatever makes him happy. Added bonus: guests will love the variety!

4. A flash of personality
We get it—your guy looks dreamy in a tux. But that doesn’t mean he loves the idea of wearing only black and white! If your wedding is formal but the groom has a more colorful sense of style, gift him brightly patterned socks, kooky cufflinks, or even a fun pair of boxer shorts before the wedding. Also an option: a playful tie, pocket square, or boutonniere. These mini shots of color will personalize his attire without veering too far from the original wedding vision.

5. To loosen his tie (literally)
The vows have been said, the formal portraits have been taken—it’s time to celebrate! As the night gets later, the last thing any groom wants is pressure to look perfect in every photograph. Pick a point in the reception with your groom ahead of time (after the cake cutting, before the bouquet toss) and agree that appearances don’t matter after that. You’ll get the photos you want, and he’ll get to have fun without worrying—everyone wins!

6. A sick send-off
Even if he’s not a car kind of guy, your groom will likely get little giddy at the idea of exiting the wedding in a memorable fashion. Whether it’s a speedboat, bicycles, or a vintage Bentley, arrange for unique end-of-the-night transportation. He’ll feel a lot better about posing for kisses while surrounded by sparklers if something he thinks is awesome comes next.

The Sexiest Lithuanian Yogi Bride And Groom We’ll Feature Today

Hang on. Lina and Mindaugas had such a sexily gorgeous wedding in Kaunas, Lithuania, that I’m still fanning myself. The couple own a yoga studio together, so let’s start with how hot that is. Then let’s examine the bad-assery of getting matching wedding-ring tattoos. Next, let’s take into consideration how stunning the two-part ceremony was: Lina and Mindaugas exchanged vows both outdoors at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers and inside a Gothic church. St. George’s Church is still undergoing restoration (building is OLD, y’all), but you’d never be able to tell from these airy, light-filled photos.

Wedding Saves Bride And Groom From Deadly Tornado

When a tornado with 200 mph winds ripped through Mark Patterson’s Arkansas home on April 27, he and his family were spared an almost certain death due to a strange but wonderful miracle.

Instead of spending that Sunday night at home like they always do, Patterson and his fiancée were several towns away getting married.

(Story continues after photo.)

“There’s a definite, 100 percent chance we would have been home,” Patterson told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. “No question about it. We wouldn’t be alive.”

Patterson and his family live just outside Mayflower, Arkansas, where the recent EF4 tornado destroyed an estimated 328 homes and killed 15 people statewide.

Luckily, their wedding took place in Roland, Arkansas, where the couple and their three kids avoided danger. And in another twist of fate, April 27 wasn’t always the date they had in mind; according to the report, Patterson says he and his fiancée first settled on April 26 but changed their minds.

Now, instead of heading off to their honeymoon in Mexico, the couple is sorting through their home’s wreckage, hoping to find important sentimental items like photographs and family heirlooms. Luckily, they already found their two dogs, Daisy and Dixie, who both managed to survive the winds.

Despite the damage, Patterson says he feels lucky and told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that when people ask him about his wedding day, he’ll have the perfect answer.

“I’ll just say it saved our lives,” he said.

No Brazilian Waxes Necessary: Survey Finds 51 Percent Don’t Groom That Hair At All

If you dread your regular visit to the waxer, you might find some solace in knowing you’re not alone: A new study has found that more women are choosing to go au naturel these days.

Commissioned by British pharmacy site UKMedix.com, the survey polled 1,870 women across the UK ages 18-30, asking them, “Do you style or groom the hair in your bikini region?” The answer: 49 percent said yes, while 51 percent said no.

Of those women who have decided to forego grooming, 45 percent said they “used to, but don’t any longer,” while 14 percent said they couldn’t afford all of those pricey waxes. That’s a pretty high attrition rate, if you ask us.

Perhaps these ladies got wind of the fact that men are also shifting their preferences toward a more natural down-there aesthetic. However, pleasing men wasn’t the women’s chief concern — the survey also found that 30 percent of women simply preferred the “natural look.” (Plus, 62 percent of respondents reported that their partners had the same preference!)

This should come as good news to all of the women anxiously popping aspirins and sipping glasses of wine before their monthly appointments (i.e. us). Also, when you skip waxing, you can finally put all of those awkward bikini line questions to rest (seriously, can you get a wax during your period?). But less grooming certainly does come with its own series of issues — just ask Gwyneth Paltrow.

Moral of the story? If you’re over waxing, you have options — and you’re certainly not alone.

At least waxing isn’t as awkward as these beauty procedures:
