‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Director Masterfully Trolls Marvel Executive Impersonator

The plan was simple: Open an Instagram account under the name Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios and producer of a gazillion blockbusters, and begin messaging James Gunn, director of the fantastically popular “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, thinking no further about a producer and a director of such caliber using Instagram’s chat feature as a standard medium of communication.

And yet whoever hatched it likely underestimated Gunn’s appetite for internet trolling. Both sides appeared locked in a surprisingly lengthy battle of one-upmanship over Marvel secrets in the ensuing conversation.

The director shared screenshots over Facebook Thursday afternoon to document his encounter with the mysterious Feige impersonator, including many attempts to offer false information about current Marvel projects.

Gunn announced in April that he will be helming a follow-up to “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.”

Rest assured, Groot will not lose his head, probably.

Reporter’s Reaction To ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Ride Is A Joy To Behold

Cory James will likely think twice about broadcasting live from a theme park ride again.

The news reporter for ABC30 gave viewers a preview of the revamped “Guardians of the Galaxy”-themed ride at Disney’s California Adventure Park on Friday.

But it’s his terrified reaction to the experience that’s now going viral.

Hilarious video shows him screaming as the elevator-style ride goes up and down. Making it funnier still is the composed nature of his fellow passengers, who appear totally tranquil in comparison.

“This was not a good idea,” says James once the ride, which opened Saturday, has “thankfully” ended.

He later lightheartedly tweeted about the ordeal being “traumatic.”

‘Alien: Covenant’ Just Barely Beats ‘Guardians’ At The Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – As this weekend approached, the question lingered if “Alien: Covenant” would be able to unseat “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” from the top spot at the domestic box office.

Now, we have an answer. As of Sunday morning, “Covenant,” from 20th Century Fox and Scott Free Productions, looks to be the winner with a three-day estimate of $ 36 million (27.6 million pounds) from 3,761 locations. That’s just above Disney’s “Guardians” sequel which is raking in an additional $ 35.3 million from 4,347 spots. The super sequel is seeing only a 46% drop from last weekend, and its total domestic earnings now exceed $ 300 million.

While “Alien” may have won, the film’s price tag in the $ 100 million range and marketing costs detract from the victory. The sixth installment in the Alien franchise (not counting the two Alien vs. Predator films) was directed by Ridley Scott and stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, and Danny McBride. It holds a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is in line with 2012’s “Prometheus.” Although it came in already having made $ 42 million overseas and $ 36 million was enough to land in the top slot, “Alien” grossed less during its first weekend in the U.S. than “Prometheus” did in 2012 ($ 51 million). Its final domestic earnings also came in below earlier projections, which pegged the horror flick at least $ 40 million.

Fox’s president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson chalked the lower totals compared with “Prometheus” to the “normal course of business.” He added that “Alien: Covenant” gives fans of the franchise since the 1979 original the chance to share with the younger generation (60% of the opening weekend audience was in the 18-34 demo). “Teenagers likely haven’t seen ‘Alien,’” he said, “This movie creates a generational bond.”

While the “Alien” franchise is still able to generate decent interest, the same cannot be said for Fox’s other release this weekend, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul.” The fourth live-action movie based on Jeff Kinney’s middle school-centric book series opened to $ 7.2 million from 3,157 locations. David Bowers, who directed movies two and three, returned to the helm nearly five years after the last iteration, and anointed a new titular wimp in Jason Drucker.

The only other major release of the weekend was “Everything, Everything,” from Warner Bros. and MGM. The sick-lit adaptation will earn $ 12 million by the end of the weekend from 2,801 locations. That’s enough to land in the top three. “Hunger Games” standout Amandla Stenberg stars as a girl with an autoimmune disease that keeps her locked up indoors. Nick Robinson plays her love interest named Olly. “Everything, Everything” earned the highest CinemaScore of the new released (an A- overall). 82% of its audience was female, and 74% were under 25 years old.

“Along with our partners, MGM, we’re thrilled that we hit our key demo,” commented Jeff Goldstein, domestic distribution chief at Warner Bros.

Amy Schumer’s “Snatched,” also from Fox, will see an additional $ 7.6 million in earnings from 3,511 theaters, putting it in the fourth slot, ahead of “Wimpy Kid.” Also in its second weekend, “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” continues to flop miserably with a weekend total of less than $ 7 million.

With Memorial Day weekend on the horizon, the overall domestic summer box office is ten percentage points lower than it was at this time last year. That means all eyes are fixed on a duo of splashy summer releases ― Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and Paramount’s “Baywatch” ― to hopefully make up some ground.

“The dominance at this point by Disney and Marvel’s early summer entry “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is impressive having earned more than all the other films combined,” said Paul Degarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore, who noted that “Captain America: Civil War” accounted for more than half of the summer take at this point last year. “However, a slow start does not portend a slow overall summer as many have predicted,” he added, “though if the ebb and flow of this season’s fortunes thus far is any indication we may have to buckle up for a pretty bumpy ride.”

James Gunn Will Direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

After directing both Guardians of the Galaxy and its upcoming sequel, James Gunn has confirmed he’s on board to helm the series’ third installment.

“I’m returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” Gunn said in a post on Facebook.

Gunn spoke incredibly highly of his partnership with Marvel Studios, saying it is “has been the best of my professional career.” He also expressed his passion for the characters from Guardians of the Galaxy, adding that his love for Star-Lord, Rocket, Groot and the rest of the crew “goes deeper than you guys can possibly imagine.”

As such, Gunn is very excited to get started on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the existence of which he all but confirmed last month. “I can’t fricking wait to get started,” he said of the project, noting that “like in both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect.”

James Gunn Randomly Makes Huge ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 3’ Announcement

When it comes to “Guardians of the Galaxy,” expect a lot Ga-more-a.

OK, admittedly, that’s not the greatest pun, but we’ll have plenty of time to work on them, since James Gunn just announced he will return for a third “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie.

That means, barring something catastrophic happening in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, Vin Diesel’s Groot, and the rest of the crew are likely coming back!

Gunn made the announcement on Facebook Monday, saying he wanted to share the news with the fans, aka the “most important people in the Guardiansverse.”

“Yes, I’m returning to write and direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’” he wrote.

Gunn credits his relationships with Marvel and Disney as big factors in his decision to return, saying, “I can’t fricking wait to get started.”

Even though “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” isn’t out until May 5, Gunn teased the newly announced movie, revealing that the third “Guardians” would come after “Avengers: Infinity War” and “conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy,” helping to “catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond.”

See Gunn’s full post below. It appears the galaxy will be in good hands for many years to come.

Baby Groot Is Too Cute In New ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ Teaser

It’s no secret Baby Groot has become everyone’s favorite character from “Guardians of the Galaxy” and judging from the newest teaser for the franchise’s second installment, the film’s creators are well aware.

On Saturday, Marvel posted a new look at the upcoming film, and it’s filled with plenty of scenes featuring the tiny superhero. You’ll want to watch it over and over again just to see the cute tree-like creature screaming “I am Groot!”

The clip also provides a look at the rest of the crew, including Star-Lord, Gamora and Rocket, involved in what looks like a pretty intense battle against the very toothy, very slimy Abilisk, and gives us a glimpse at Mantis, played by Pom Klementieff.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” hits theaters in May 2017.

Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga’hoole (blu-ray 3d) (3-d)

Director Zack Snyder teams with screenwriters John Collee and John Orloff to adapt author Kathryn Lasky’s popular series of children’s books about a group of kidnapped owlets who take flight to save their kingdom from an ancient evil by locating the legendary Guardians of Ga’Hoole. As a young hatchling, Soren would sit transfixed whenever his father would tell the tale of the Guardians of Ga’Hoole and their tireless efforts to defeat the malevolent Pure Ones, whose aim was to exterminate the entire owl population. After hearing the high-flying tales of adventure, Soren would fantasize about gliding through the clouds with the brave owl soldiers while his jealous older brother, Kludd, attempted to gain their father’s favor by becoming a skilled hunter. One day, Kludd’s anger gets the best of him, and the next thing he knows he’s tumbling over the edge of the nest with Soren. But instead of falling to the ground, the siblings are quickly snatched up by the dreaded Pure Ones, and are taken to a place where their parents will never find them. Incredibly, Soren and group of fearless young owls manage to stage a daring escape. With the future of the owl kingdoms hanging in the balance, brave Soren and his newfound friends travel to the ends of the earth in hopes of finding the mythical Great Tree and convincing the Guardians of Ga’Hoole to help defeat the Pure Ones once and for all. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Zaki’s Review: Guardians of the Galaxy

You can pinpoint the exact moment in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy that actor Chris Pratt, best known until now as an affable supporting player in films such as Delivery Man, Moneyball, and TV’s Parks and Recreation, morphs into a genuine movie star. It’s about five minutes in. We see Pratt’s character, Peter Jason Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord, a legendary (in his own mind, at least) outlaw who’s landed on the derelict planet Moraga to avail himself of its hidden treasures. Making his way through an ancient Raiders of the Lost Ark-esque temple, Quill pulls on earphones from a 1980s-era Walkman and dances his way across the ruins to the tune of Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love.”

And just like that, the Marvel factory — which previously worked its mojo on Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Evans — has sprinkled fairy dust on top of its latest leading man.

Of course, it’s not just Pratt’s presence as Quill, a dashing rogue in the proud Han Solo tradition, that makes the James Gunn-directed Guardians worth watching. Rather, it’s the entire machine-works Marvel has constructed around him. At this stage, I’ve simply run out of superlatives for the practiced precision with which they bring each of their opuses to the screen. That “flipping pages” logo up-top has become an immediate signifier of quality, and for this, their tenth release, they’ve channeled all the goodwill built up over six years of Iron Mans and Thors and Captain Americas into an original property with a potentially unwieldy premise and a potentially laughable title, and turned it into the most confident bit of sci-fi world-building I’ve seen since the original Star Wars.

If the superhero jam pic The Avengers two summers ago was the culmination of a long-held fanboy fever dream, Guardians of the Galaxy surpasses that in some ways by delving into corners of the Marvel Comics universe so arcane it’d never even have occurred to me I’d one day see them realized on-screen. In addition to Pratt as Quill/Star-Lord, the cast includes Zoe Saldana (done up in green bodypaint, as opposed to her blue-skinned Na’vi configuration in Avatar) as assassin Gamora, WWE wrestler Dave Bautista as strongman Drax the Destroyer, and the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel as, respectively, Rocket (a gun-toting, ass-kicking raccoon) and Groot (a sentient tree). Read the last part of that last sentence again and let it sink in. A raccoon. And a tree.

That right there perfectly sums up for me everything that makes Guardians such a late summer feast: how unapologetically it brandishes its comic book bona fides. As deftly helmed by Gunn (from a script by himself and Nicole Perlman), the film bounces between moments of heft and moments of hilarity, all without a hint of reflexive embarrassment over its four-color origins. Bear in mind, we’re talking about a genre where “Bruce Banner” became “David Banner” on TV’s The Incredible Hulk because alliterative names were deemed “too comic booky.” Heck, the makers of 1990’s execrable Punisher flick were too terrified to even have star Dolph Lundgren wear a skull t-shirt lest they alienate mainstream auds (because there was nothing wrong with that movie otherwise).

In a testament to how far away those days now seem, Guardians puts its most outlandish elements front-and-center and dares the audiences not to take them seriously — doubly interesting given that mere months ago Captain America: The Winter Soldier gave us the studio’s most grounded effort yet. Note also that I haven’t even gotten into the nitty-gritty plot details, and a big part of that is because there isn’t anything particularly original here. Ne’er-do-well misfits find common cause to save the universe from pending annihilation (said annihilation being threatened by blue baddie Ronan the Accuser, played by Lee Pace). That’s pretty much all you need to know before forking over the ticket price, but the difference is all in the execution.

Guardians of the Galaxy definitely exists within the elastic confines of the reality that producer Kevin Feige and Co. have spent six years and nine prior films (plus a TV series or two) filling in, but its marching orders are less about tilling the same old Earth than they are about staking out an entirely new field for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to plant seeds in. While cosmic space opera has been a mainstay of the modern comics since practically their inception in the ’60s, the movies have largely kept such conceits at arm’s length until now. But with what Star-Lord and crew accomplish here — as well as what they tantalizingly point us towards — it’s fair to say that not even the sky is the limit anymore for what to expect from Marvel. A

‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 2’ Officially Coming On July 28, 2017

This month, Marvel Studios announced plans to add six films to its always expanding slate of features. It was expected that the studio would perhaps announce a few of those titles during its Comic-Con presentation on Saturday night, but only one name was revealed: “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” will arrive on July 28, 2017. James Gunn will return to write and direct the sequel, which follows next week’s “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

As for the rest of the Marvel schedule, “Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron” is out on May 1, 2015. Peyton Reed’s “Ant-Man” arrives two months later, on July 17, 2015. “Captain America 3” comes next on May 6, 2016. After that and excluding “Guardians 2,” there are seven unnamed or unannounced films on the calendar: July 8, 2016, May 5, 2017, Nov. 3, 2017, May 4, 2018, July 6, 2018, Nov. 2, 2018 and May 3, 2019. (“Doctor Strange” is expected to arrive on that July 8, 2016 slot, but Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige made no reference to the film during the Comic-Con panel despite rumors that Joaquin Phoenix would be announced as star of the film during the event.)

“Guardians of the Galaxy” is out on Aug. 1.

‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Trailer Introduces A Bunch Of A-Holes

Marvel has debuted the first official trailer for “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the upcoming sci-fi super-hero adventure starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, John C. Reilly and the voices of Bradley Cooper (as Rocket Raccoon) and Vin Diesel (as Groot, an alien tree). The James Gunn film looks like one of Marvel’s funniest features to date thanks to Pratt’s comic timing and a geeky sensibility that knows just how to rock Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling.” The second of two 2014 Marvel blockbusters, following April’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” arrives in theaters on Aug. 1.
