Daredevil: Here’s Why Kingpin Is the Best MCU Villain

Spoiler warning for all three seasons of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix…

Back when Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk burst onto the MCU scene in Daredevil: Season 1, as the towering-yet-reclusive crime lord bent on leveling Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen and rebuilding it as the neighborhood’s secret savior, fans were blown away.

D’Onofrio’s scarily tender performance, as a socially awkward mastermind with a preference for killing people with his bare hands, gave viewers a villain with depth and layers that the Marvel movies simply didn’t have time to afford. Fisk was lauded at the time for being the best bad guy ever produced by the MCU.

And now, two seasons later, he still is.

It’s Finally Fall! Here’s Everything to Know About the Fall Equinox

Despite the fact that the pumpkin spice latte debuted this year in August, fall actually doesn’t begin until Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018. This day not only marks the unofficial start of sweater weather, it it also has a scientific significance: the autumnal equinox.

The equinox isn’t just a day, it’s a minute.

According to The Weather Channel, the autumnal equinox happens at 9:54 p.m. EDT, marking the official end of summer and the beginning of fall. During that minute, the sun crosses the Earth’s equator from the Northern Hemisphere into the Southern Hemisphere and day and night last the exact same amount of time — 12 hours — everywhere across the world.

So why does this happen? Throughout the year, the earth tilts on its axis at a diagonal away from or toward the sun, causing the change in seasons. During the equinox, it becomes momentarily perfectly perpendicular, meaning the sun’s rays pass directly over the equator. Following that minute, the Northern hemisphere begins to tilt away from the sun leading to shorter days and cooler temperatures. It also causes a shift in the jet stream, which affects weather patterns.

Equinoxes happen twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, while the solstices occur once in the summer and once in the winter. During an equinox, the sun is at the closest distance to the equator, while during a solstice it is the furthest distance away.

Here’s What Leonardo DiCaprio Is Serving for Dinner at His Fundraiser in Sonoma

Leonardo DiCaprio’s charity gala on September 15th in Sonoma will be a combination of glamorous guests, a gourmet (and sustainable!) menu and good works — and PEOPLE has an exclusive look at the night!

DiCaprio, who is currently filming Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his foundation. The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation is dedicated to protecting the Earth, including conservation of oceans and wildlife and fighting climate change.

The gala, held at Jackson Park in Sonoma County, will be hosted by DiCaprio and Laurene Powell Jobs, philanthropist and widow of Steve Jobs. The night will include a special performance from Chris Martin of Coldplay and an auction by Sotheby’s. The auction catalog available for bidding includes artworks by Wayne Thiebaud, Richard Prince and David Hockney, all selected by DiCaprio’s art advisor, Lisa Schiff.

The menu will include a three-course dinner and dessert. DiCaprio requested a sustainable menu, which was created by Chef Kyle Connaughton from SingleThread Farms.

The menu’s first course, “Summer in Sonoma”, consists of various vegetables with a creamy tofu sauce and seafood, all from local food suppliers. The vegetable selection includes heirloom melon and goma dare (a Japanese sesame sauce) broccolini, followed by seafood including pickled oysters and smoked scallops.

The second course features heirloom tomatoes with homemade tofu and pickled wasabi leaves, followed by the entrée course of roasted turbot with heirloom squash and Sonoma mushrooms. For dessert, guests will dine on sesame semifreddo, an Italian treat made with heavy cream and sesame seeds. The wine selection, put together by Jackson Family Wines in Sonoma, features a Sauvignon Blanc (pictured below), a Pinot Noir and a Chardonnay all from California vineyards.

The star-studded event will be attended by celebrities including Tobey Maguire, Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo.

DiCaprio has always been outspoken about climate change. In his acceptance speech after winning an Academy Award for Best Actor in 2016 he said, “Climate change is real. It is happening right now, it is the most urgent threat facing our entire species.”

Interested in Adopting a Pet? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

It’s summer, which means animal rescues and shelters are more crowded than ever with kittens, puppies and plenty of other animals looking for homes.

This is a great time to adopt a pet, and with Clear the Shelters approaching on Aug. 18, it’s better than ever. Clear the Shelters is a nationwide adoption initiative supported by NBC Universal and Telemundo stations across the country. Each year, these stations partner with hundreds of animal rescues and shelters to offer pet adoptions for waived or reduced fees.

Before taking part in this event, though, it’s important to do two things: Check cleartheshelters.com to see which rescues and shelters in your area are taking part in CTS, and prepare your home and family for the arrival of a new pet.

To help with the latter, we talked to PEOPLE Pet Vet Dr. Evan Antin about what you and your family should prepare and know before going to the shelter to adopt a pet.

Take a look at his advice below.

What questions should you ask at the shelter to find the perfect pet for you?

There’s no perfect question because everyone is different and has different needs in a pet. You need to ask questions that reflect your lifestyle and what you can offer your future pet. For instance, if you live in an apartment and have no outdoor space, perhaps a cat would be a great option for you.

How can you help prepare other pets for the arrival of a new pet?

One way to help prepare a pre-existing pet is to designate a room or space in your home that’s intended for the new pet for a temporary period and keep the pre-existing pet out of there. When bringing home new pets slow, gradual introductions are ideal to form healthy relationships. New pet needs a “safe space” too.

What can a new pet parent expect during the adoption process?

Meeting adoptable animals one-on-one in an enclosed space, watching adoptable animals interact with other animals in the shelter to see how social they are, an interview to determine if you’re a good candidate to adopt a pet, some paperwork and a small fee.

What are some good ways to know if a pet is right for you?

It’s all about finding the right pet for YOU. Everyone has different lifestyles and space and time so you need to find a pet that accommodates to that.

I want a puppy, but don’t know if I am ready for the commitment. Should I adopt one?

Probably not. You definitely need to be ready. Some vets with children claim that raising their puppy was more time-demanding than raising their children. I’m not sure if that’s the case, but you will need to make a significant time commitment.

What are some of the perks of pet adoption?

Not only are you rescuing a pet in need, this animal will appreciate YOU for giving them shelter for the rest of their lives! It’s a beautiful thing and my dog Henry and my cat Willy show me their appreciation every single day and I reciprocate my love for them every single day too!

Here’s how much Heat’s Dwyane Wade’s ‘monster deal’ to play in China is reportedly worth

News surfaced over the weekend that a Chinese basketball team had plans to offer Dwyane Wade a “monster deal” to continue his basketball career overseas. A contract offer has now reportedly been extended to the Miami Heat’s 12-time All-Star. A report out of China on Tuesday says the Zhejiang Golden Bulls of the Chinese Basketball Association offered Wade a three-year, $ 25 million deal. That’s an average of about $ 8.3 million per year. The Heat is already $ 4 million over the $ 123 million luxury tax with up to three roster spots left to fill. Two of those spots are being held for Wade and Udonis Haslem, 38, to make decisions about their future. Haslem would likely play on the NBA veteran’s minimum

Morgan Freeman Made a Lewd Comment to Me on a Red Carpet — Here’s Why I’m Speaking Out

Editor’s note: Maggie Parker is an entertainment journalist and a frequent contributor to PEOPLE. In the wake of sexual harassment allegations against Morgan Freeman reported by CNN, she decided to share her story of a red carpet encounter with the actor. In a statement on May 24, Freeman, 80, responded to the CNN report: “Anyone who knows me or has worked with me knows I am not someone who would intentionally offend or knowingly make anyone feel uneasy. I apologize to anyone who felt uncomfortable or disrespected — that was never my intent.”

Who would dare to go up against God? Sixteen people, actually. And I’m going to be No. 17.

CNN released a story Thursday in which reporters, production staff, and others came forward to accuse Morgan Freeman of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior. Eight of them were alleged victims of harassment or inappropriate behavior by Freeman. The other eight said they witnessed Freeman’s alleged conduct.

I fall into the first group.

I was a 25-year-old, green and determined on-camera reporter for a men’s magazine when I first met Freeman at the premiere of Now You See Me in 2013. My videographer and I decided to ask each actor, from Freeman to Mark Ruffalo to Isla Fisher to Michael Caine, “If you could do one magic trick, what would it be?” The answers ranged from disappearing to saving the environment, but Freeman’s was the real outlier.

After I asked the question, he responded, “You want me to say something clean don’t you?” I didn’t really get what he meant, so I said, “You don’t have to.” As in, be yourself, not realizing what I was getting myself into. He looked me up and down and said, “Honey, you wouldn’t have a stitch on…how about that?” I laughed. But I’ll be honest with you, I was not only caught off-guard, I was also confused. Did this seemingly sweet old actor mean what I thought he meant?

According to the Macmillan Dictionary, “not have a stitch on” means “to not be wearing any clothes.”

RELATED: Morgan Freeman Hits on Female Reporter in Resurfaced Video: ‘I Get to Look at You and Drool’

In the moment, it took me a second to process and recover. This at the time 75-year-old Oscar winner just basically told me, a third of his age, he wanted to see me naked…thank you, I guess? Mind you, he knew there was a camera on him, and he was surrounded by other actors and reporters. Still, he said it.

He walked away, and I turned to my videographer; we were both shocked. I wasn’t upset, or, I didn’t know I should be upset. It was more of discomfort and a bit of violation.

But that quickly dissipated, because we got something good. On camera. The clip was funny and juicy. Surely, this will blow up. I went home, excited to see the video live, but also feeling like something was off and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I blamed it on the fact that I didn’t react quicker—“must work on caught-off-guard reaction for the future,” I noted to myself. The only blame I placed that night was on myself. How does that make any sense?

The video went live the next day. But it didn’t blow up.

Almost exactly five years later, I’ll never forget my mint green dress that felt like it was being taken off with Freeman’s eyes. At the same time, I’ll also never forget feeling slightly flattered—a very, very famous actor told me I’m attractive. Not in those words. But, he did. That’s kind of cool…right?

As I got older, I slowly began to realize how wrong his comment was, and embarrassment set in.

I was embarrassed for not being more affected by it, for not taking action after. I didn’t acknowledge the discomfort I felt. I was so used to it; I’d been eyed and catcalled all my life—I was a woman with noticeable body parts. Plus, it could have been way worse.

It never really hit me that it was harassment. There are so many inadvertent boundaries placed on people when it comes to sexual misconduct. Victims often experience guilt for feeling harassed when someone out there has had it much worse than them, or think that they’re overreacting about just some silly comment. That is the last thing a victim should feel.

Then the Harvey Weinstein news broke, and I finally realized there was a legitimate reason something felt off that night. I should never have been exposed to such degrading comments, especially in the workplace, regardless of how minor and fleeting the moment was. I was more than a body, but in that moment, Freeman made me feel otherwise.

Unfortunately, all those years laughing it off have cost me. I didn’t feel I had a right to be mad if I wasn’t then. The worst part was, I wasn’t the only one who felt this way.

When I told people I was writing this article, some questioned the validity of it. Because it “didn’t bother me at the time.” Because I made jokes about it and shared it flippantly when people asked about interesting red carpet run-ins. Apparently, I wore it like a badge of honor.

First of all: No one knows how that affected me but me. Second of all: That’s the exact problem. That I didn’t automatically get offended. Reading the accounts of Weinstein’s accusers helped me realize why I brushed it off—the same reason many women did with Weinstein, and Matt Lauer, and Louis C.K., and so on: that just wasn’t how it worked. Famous men were untouchable. They really could do no wrong. This was OK. If anything, it was good to get the attention of a famous man…whatever kind of attention that was.

I felt it was time to come forward, but there were still some concerns.

This was Morgan Freeman. The beloved man who’s played God and raised money for various charities including the Red Cross. The man for whom everyone stood when he received the SAG Life Achievement Award, and who sort of spoke about gender equality in his acceptance speech.

Like many of the women who’ve spoken out against men in powerful positions, I knew this could affect my career. I interview celebrities for a living, and I know they are human, they make mistakes, so I gave him a second chance. But 18 chances is not something I’m willing to give, especially if that means one more woman, or young reporter, might be negatively affected by his behavior. And it’s not even really about Freeman. It’s about making sure people know this type of behavior is damaging and unacceptable.

Which brings me back to my original question, do I mess with the man who has played God multiple times?

Thanks to the courage I’ve acquired from the women who came before me, I have decided I will. This is no longer a laughing matter, and it never should have been in the first place.

God, you messed with the wrong girls.

Here’s What Music Legend Sir Elton John Has to Say About Camila Cabello

Everyone’s in a fever over Camila Cabello, even Sir Elton John! On Jan. 8, the British music legend expressed his love for the Cuban American singer on Apple Music’s Beats 1 with Matt Wilkinson: “I just think she’s going to have an amazing year, cause she’s … just so much fun. She’s got a great voice, and she has a great attitude.”

The Rocket Man singer added that he “just loves” Cabello and if their paths ever cross, he’ll tell her: “You make me happy…your records make me smile.” The pianist confessed that the Havana singer’s music puts him in a buoyant mood. “There’s a vibrancy in her,” he said. “It makes me feel good, makes me want to get up and dance.”

Cabello did not take praise from the music icon lightly. On Jan. 9, she zealously wrote on Twitter: “Oh my God Elton John knows my name?!”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The former Fifth Harmony band member, who went solo in 2016, continued to express her enthusiasm — and disbelief — in an Instagram post on Jan. 10.

“This made my year and it’s only January. I love you @eltonjohn,” Cabello captioned a video she posted of the “Tiny Dancer” crooner gushing over her talent.  Cabello fans were equally stoked by the longtime hitmaker’s compliment: “This is really amazing! And from someone so at the top of the game! Well done chica!,” one follower wrote. “Love him for saying beautiful words about our deserving Queen,” another added.

Cabello’s first solo album, Camila, drops Jan. 12

Here’s Your First Look At The Dragons In ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 7

It appears Dany will no longer be asking, “Where are my dragons?” Because you can’t miss them.

In a new photo from “Game of Thrones” Season 7, courtesy of HBO and Entertainment Weekly, we see Drogon doing his thing. And dude is big. Director Matt Shakman previously told EW that “the dragons this year are the size of 747s.” He wasn’t lying.

It seems Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen is in the middle of her conquest for Westeros and Drogon is just on a path of destruction ― as it should be.

Of course, in the image we only see Dany riding one dragon. Where are the other two?

Yes, this photo’s purpose could just be to hype up the size of the dragons, but the absence of Viserion and Rhaegal may be intentional. There are theories out there that others, including Mr. Jon Snow (Kit Harington) or even Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), could become dragon riders. Perhaps they’re hanging out with the other two while Dany is raining down fire with Drogon? Or maybe they’re all just making s’mores off screen? Either way, that’s something HBO probably wouldn’t want to spoil in a press pic.

It’s looking more and more likely that other dragon riders may appear, though.

Regardless, the new picture of Drogon is fire.

Here’s What You Need To Know About Duchess Kate’s Topless Photo Lawsuit

A court trial regarding a 2012 series of topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge finally began on Tuesday in France, The Telegraph reports.

At the time the photos were taken, Prince William and the Duchess (formerly known as Kate Middleton) were on vacation in Provence, France. The images ran in the French publication Closer, and were met immediately with disdain from the palace.

“Their Royal Highnesses have been hugely saddened to learn that a French publication and a photographer have invaded their privacy in such a grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner,” a statement from the palace read. The statement also called the incident a reminder of the 1997 death of Princess Diana, reminding her family of “the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting for the duke and duchess for being so.”

The royal family threatened legal action in 2012. Now six people, including three photographers, are being questioned in France in connection with the images and their distribution.

According to The Telegraph, a written statement from William was read by the family’s lawyer in French, and it called the photos shocking and unexpected. “We know France and the French and we know that they are, in principle, respectful of private life, including that of their guests,” he said.

He also reiterated that the situation reminded him of what Diana dealt with in her own life. The pair is seeking 1.5 million euros, or a little over 1.6 million U.S. dollars in the suit.

At the time the photos were released, Closer’s editor defended its decision to publish the photos, stating that “ these are pictures that are full of joy. The pictures are not degrading.”

We’ll have to wait and see what the court has to say about that.

Want to Buy Green Beauty? Here’s What All Those Buzzwords Mean

In recent years, the trend towards green beauty has transitioned from “super crunchy” to “majorly mainstream,” with huge retailers including Target and Nordstrom expanding their natural beauty sections to keep up with demand. But how do you know if that natural beauty product you’ve picked up is really as good for you as the label indicates? Does “organic” automatically mean healthy, and who even ensures that all the claims are accurate? The FDA doesn’t implement much strict regulation about what harmful ingredients can’t be used in cosmetics, so it’s up to consumers to sift through the thousands of products on the market to figure out what’s actually good for us.

“Sadly, we are on our own when it comes to finding beauty products (and food for that matter!) that are truly safe,” RMS beauty founder Rose-Marie Swift told PeopleStyle. From dozens of different marketing terms to ingredients you probably can’t pronounce, it can feel overwhelming to find a product you can feel good about. So to cut through the clutter, we talked to some of the biggest experts in green beauty to break down exactly what all the terms and buzzwords you can’t stop hearing really mean.

RELATED PHOTOS: Eco-Friendly (and Amazing) Beauty Finds That Give Back During Earth Month

What does it mean to be a certified organic beauty product?

Just because a product is labeled “organic” doesn’t necessarily mean it really is. “As part of the National Organic Program, you have to have a minimum content of 70 percent organic ingredients to get a ‘Made With Organic’ claim on the label,” said Tracey Favre, director of Quality Assurance International Inc. To be in the big leagues and earn an official UDSA seal, a product goes under even more scrutiny.

“For the USDA seal, you have to have 95 percent or greater organic ingredients, and that extra 5 percent can’t be any ingredient that is listed as not allowed under the National Organic Program,” she added. So what about all those other products claiming to be organic? Stay wary – what you see may not be exactly what you think you’re getting. “The USDA doesn’t have jurisdiction over labeling claims on personal care products (they only do on the agricultural ingredients), so you really need to look for those marks to give you confidence of what you’re getting,” Favre said. “That is really key for consumers to understand.”

What about all-natural beauty?

Although there is no official government organization that oversees the natural beauty market or pinpoints a specific definition for it, many brands go through third parties to get certification. “For us, natural means choosing the purest and best forms of the most effective, nature-derived ingredients available,” said Tata Harper, who created her own namesake natural skincare brand.

Buy It! Tata Harper Clarifying Moisturizer, $ 105; sephora.com

According to Harper, the term “natural” in beauty means the complete formula is 100 percent synthetic free. “I thought consumer products were all tested and strictly regulated, and it was really shocking to learn that wasn’t the case,” she told us.

RELATED PHOTOS: Editors’ Picks: Sustainable/Eco-Friendly Items

Since there isn’t a specific regulating body for natural products, Harper turns to Ecocert, an organization that works to specifically certify ingredients as natural. “Getting certified is optional, but it’s what we do to give our customers more clarity,” she said. Read a product’s website and label closely to see how natural the product you’re using actually is.

Buy It! RMS Beauty Magic Luminizer, $ 38; sephora.com

I’ve also been hearing about this thing called clean beauty. What’s that?

Like natural beauty products, for “clean” products, there is no official body by the government to regulate what’s what. But brands looking to reputably claim a “clean” designation get certified by a third party organization to give consumers confidence in what they’re buying.

“Clean safe, non-toxic and verified by a third party,” C2 California Clean co-founder Christine Falsetti told us. “A lot of things that are clean are also green. When I go in the shower, it all washes off into the ecosystem, so if you think about the larger footprint you have, it’s important.”

Buy It! C2 California Clean Advanced Hyaluronic Hydrating Primer, $ 105; amazon.com

So what’s the difference between “clean” and “natural,” then? “I like to think of poison ivy and poison oak – that is something that is naturally occurring and beautiful in nature, but you’re not going to rub that on your body,” Falsetti said. “Or other things, like natural talc, can still cause allergic reactions in a lot of people, so that isn’t considered ‘clean.’”

What ingredients should I be wary of if I see them on an ingredient deck?

First and foremost, if anything on an ingredient list includes the words sulfates and parabens (which are used as artificial preservatives in cosmetics), it’s not green. “They have possible links to cancer and reproductive issues, and even though the link isn’t fully proven, there is enough doubt that we aren’t comfortable using it,” said Lanolips founder Kirsen Carriol.

Another big one to look out for: fragrance. “A lot of people use the word fragrance to mask bad ingredients in the product,” said Vert Beauty owner and makeup artist Amanda Hume. “Fragrance is a big red flag because you can hide a lot of things in it,” Farelli added. “Companies are allowed to use this term to hide the combination of other chemicals used in the ‘fragrance.’”

Mineral oil feels moisturizing on the skin, but in reality, speeds up aging. “It doesn’t penetrate the skin so it seals it and creates a barrier,” Hume said. “This doesn’t allow the skin to breathe (which is an important function of that organ) so it slows down the process of normal cell development which results in premature aging.”

Buy It! Savor Beauty Truffle Face Cream, $ 74; savorbeauty.com

What’s a good place to get started if I want to go green?

Don’t feel pressure to throw out all the beauty products you own and go all in right off the bat. “I think the best place to start is with products you use daily – whichever they are,” Harper said. “Say you use moisturizer daily but you don’t wash your hair daily. Start with moisturizer. Make a personal commitment and take your time finding the best things for you.”

Are you going green in your beauty routine? Tell us how in the comments below.

Here’s An Old Hollywood Movie You Should Watch If You Loved ‘Get Out’

By now, you’re probably aware that Jordan Peele considers his movie “Get Out” to be a “social thriller” ― a genre he coined himself.

The film has been both a box-office and critical success, earning over $ 150 million in ticket sales and settling at a 99 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (with only one negative review).

During a long media cycle for the movie, Jordan Peele appeared on numerous podcasts, including “Fresh Air” and “Nerdist,” and showed up in print publications, such as GQ and The New York Times. The Huffington Post suggested that “Get Out” is the type of movie the Oscars should pay attention to, and praised the ending as “a reason to go to the movies.”

If you’re reading this, you are probably, like us, already craving another great “social thriller” to watch ASAP.

Although it may be a while before a new movie comes out, it’s already possible to discover an older film that may be brand new to you. During numerous interviews, Peele referenced “The Stepford Wives” as a good choice.

But in any case, it was a welcome surprise when streaming movie service Warner Archive reached out about a new curation by old Hollywood podcast host extraordinaire Karina Longworth, the creator of the popular “You Must Remember This.”

The curated list, which mostly focuses on movies from the mid-1900s, including “West Point” (1928), “Bombshell” (1933), “The Star” (1952) and “The Prince and the Showgirl” (1957), features a flick that might just interest “Get Out” fans.

Here’s Longworth talking to the Warner Archive about the 1942 movie “Cat People.”

I think the most essential film on the list is “Cat People.” It’s definitely something I would recommend for people who think they don’t like horror movies. It’s a masterclass in filmmaking with budgetary limitations, and its political allegory (critiquing the idea of American security as being synonymous with homogeneity, and the fear of the other) couldn’t be more timely.

HuffPost sent a few follow-up questions Longworth’s way to get a further explanation of “Cat People” and its role in culture. Her responses are below.

You said “Cat People” is the most essential film on this list in your mind, due to its ability to create a successful political allegory on a low budget. Could you talk a bit more in length about the message the movie was trying to present and your understanding of how it was received?

Longworth: There’s a part in the “YMRT” episode I did on “Cat People’s” producer Val Lewton, in which Lewton is in a meeting at RKO and an executive says to him, “Remember, we don’t want any ‘messages’ in our movies.” Lewton responded, “Sorry, but my movies do have messages. The message is, death is good.”

That deliberate antagonism of his bosses aside, all of Lewton’s films intentionally used the horror/thriller genre as an excuse to make movies about social and psychological life in the post-war world. In “Cat People,” Lewton depicts a cheerful, peace time America that equates a secure society with a homogenous one.

The “monster” is the foreign other who has infiltrated the American family by marrying a boring American man, and in a foreshadowing of the 1950s’ totally mixed-up ideas about women and sex, this exotic creature has to remain chaste in order to keep the monster locked up inside her.

If I had to explain what Lewton meant by the idea that his “message” is that “death is good,” I’d point to the fact that the harbinger of death in “Cat People” is also the film’s most sympathetic character, and is absolutely a victim of social circumstance. “Cat People” was a massive hit, probably because all of these ideas were subliminal rather than overt.

Do you see parallels between “Cat People” and Jordan Peele’s recent stated goal to make social commentary horror (such as “Get Out”)? Do you think “Cat People” can be considered a urtext for that genre (if not necessarily for Peele specifically)?

I think the genre of horror (or, supernatural fiction) has been frequently used as a vehicle for social commentary and criticism. I wouldn’t call “Cat People” the single urtext, because it’s not part of the first or second wave of socially conscious supernatural films.

Certainly it is a classic, but it was actually probably more innovative in its visual style than in its social content. In terms of looking for other foundational films, prior to “Cat People,” a lot of the monster movies of the 1930s, including “King Kong” and “Frankenstein,” and two of my favorites, “Mad Love” and “The Walking Dead,” use the stories of monsters, and the idea of a porous line between life and death, to critique society.

If there is one single urtext, maybe it’s Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.”

Here’s The Real Problem With Casually Using The Word ‘Depressed’

We need to change the way we talk about mental health.

People often use words associated with mental illness, like “depressed” or “OCD,” in casual conversation as a way to express annoyance, make a joke or explain their feelings. In truth, this is hugely disrespectful to the one in five American adults who experience a mental health condition in a given year.

It’s actually demeaning to those with true illnesses that can’t easily stop these behaviors,” Dan Reidenberg, executive director of the suicide awareness organization SAVE, previously told The Huffington Post. “If we trivialize them into something else or we make that become the person’s identity, we have done everyone a disservice.”

Artist Annie Erskine explains it best in these comics for CollegeHumor: The words you say matter when it comes to mental health. Take a look at the illustrations below:

Head over to CollegeHumor to see the rest of this spot-on series. Bottom line? Mental illness isn’t a punchline, it’s a health condition.

Couples Were Asked If They’d Have A Threesome. Here’s What They Said

Like anything sex-related, you’ll never know if your partner is into threesomes unless you ask.

In the video above, the team over at WatchCut got the conversation started, asking couples if they’d ever be down to share their partner in bed. Some of the pairs have already done it.

“We don’t do it with people we know,” one boyfriend explains. “No kissing! And no spending the night ― [it’s] a one and done kind of deal.”

Some couples aren’t exactly on the same page.

“My wife is for me; I don’t want to share or be part of somebody else’s fantasy,” one husband says. “I’m just not that into that.”

His wife, on the other hand, seems a bit curious about the possibility.

“I don’t know about now but I probably would have before?” she says. “I don’t know! I’d definitely have to be drunk.”

Here’s How Far Your Vacation Fund Will Stretch at 10 Top Spring Break Destinations

It’s that time of year again, when college kids and busy working folk alike flock to the beach for a week of sun, sand and — if you’re this seriously impressive grandma — tequila shots.

But not all tropical getaways are created equal, and trying to decipher which spot offers the best sunbathing benefits for your buck can be more stressful than the job or class you’re trying to escape from.

To help you make the decision, TripAdvisor broke down what the average traveler will get for $ 2,500 in 10 of the most popular destinations, taking into account airfare, hotel rates and length of stay.

Surprisingly, some international vacations are cheaper or equal to domestic trips. Your money will go a bit farther in Barcelona than in Honolulu. You can say “Aloha” for about $ 746 in flights and $ 317 per night for six nights in a hotel. In Spain, you’ll spend a good chunk on your ride over (around $ 857), but you’ll get to stay in the city for a day longer, as the hotel rate is about $ 229 per night.

Here’s Why Your Wife Is Stressed All The Time

You can practically see the stress written all over your wife’s face. Struggling to figure out what’s really bothering her?

Below, couples therapists share the most common issues wives say they’re frustrated about in their marriages.

1. She’s tired from doing it all.

You lovingly call her superwoman but even superheroes have a breaking point. Far too many women with full-time careers and kids are married to spouses who fail to fully recognize how exhausting that balancing act can be, said Ryan Howes, a psychologist in Pasadena, California

“The conflict and stressors from these competing roles are evident on a daily basis and it usually appears in a pair of arguments: Either a mother works hard and feels guilty for not spending more time with her children or she doesn’t work and suffers the scrutiny of her peers for not doing enough. In either case, there is stress and plenty of it.”

In other words, there’s a 100 percent chance that your wife could use your sympathy and support ― even if it just means finishing off a bottle of wine and listening to her rant about her coworkers or the catty clique on the playground.

2. She needs time to herself.

“Me time” becomes non-existent once you have kids. That’s why you both have to carve out time for yourselves. The kids will benefit from well-rested, emotionally and physically restored parents.

“Making time to take care of ourselves is extremely important,” said Talia Wagner, a marriage and family therapist in Los Angeles, California. “Because there is so much on most modern women’s plates, many chose to forgo this time, not realizing how essential it is to their well being and that of their family.”

3. You aren’t doing your share of the childcare.

Who does the lion share of childcare in your house? Who picks the kids up from soccer practice? Who makes sure A Wrinkle In Time is read and reported on by the deadline? If the answer is “my wife,” it’s high time you stepped up, said Laurel Steinberg, a New York-based relationship therapist and adjunct professor of psychology at Columbia University

“Consider what you can do to help make her life easier, whether it’s helping to coordinate carpools, bulk-cooking on Sunday evenings or proactively caring for her and the kids on the weekends,” she said. “Take an active interest in what they are learning in school. Anything helps.”

4. The thrill is gone.

Don’t think that just because you’re married you can short shrift romance. If you’ve put date night on the back burner, your wife has no doubt noticed, Wagner said.

“When women remember the courting phase of their relationship and how different their S.O. was then, it usually brings about disappointment and longing,” she said. “Many feel like their mate has stopped investing in this very important part of their intimacy.”

That’s your cue to call a babysitter and tell your wife about the super exciting plans you arranged for Friday night.

5. She wants you to practice work-life balance.

You both are concerned with your work-life balance  ― but there’s a high chance your wife wishes you’d put more thought into the life part of that equation, Howes said.

“The men in my practice talk a lot about work, but their focus is typically on the deals, the strategy and the financial benefits ― not how it affects their relationships,” he told us. “The women tend to focus on the relational dynamics of their job and home life.”

To put it simply, “men need to understand that work choices aren’t just about the outcome, it’s about how it impacts relationships at home,” Howes explained.

6. She feels like a project manager.

Your home is a well-oiled machine and chances are, it’s due to your wife’s efforts. It may look perfect from the outside, but take a closer look and you’ll find a wife who’s fed up with being the unofficial project manager of her home, Wagner said.

“The wife is frequently the one handing out instructions regarding the many moving parts of their joint life together: She knows where to find missing clothing, remembers the bills due today, and that next Wednesday it is pajama day at school,” Wagner explained. “Essentially, she is managing and troubleshooting the internal workings of their lives. Unsurprisingly, many wives feel burdened by this massive responsibility and wish their husbands would take some responsibility.”

7. Communication is lacking.

Sorry, but “what do you want for dinner?” and “did you pick up Avery from gymnastics?” does not qualify as quality communication. Technology makes it easier to connect, but a few hastily sent texts throughout the day can’t stand in for quality conversation at the end of the night, Howes said.

“Women are generally more collaborative and verbal than men, and texts don’t do a good enough job of allowing a woman to vent and feel heard while she problem solves,” he said. “Technology is good in a pinch, but it doesn’t take the place (yet) of face to face conversation, especially with your spouse!”

There you have it: Put down your smartphone and be a better spouse. Your de-stressed wife will thank you.

Here’s A Toad Wearing A Top Hat, Because What Else Do You Have Going On?

Chris Newsome, a 43-year-old from Alabama, knows how to make an amphibian feel fancy.

This past summer, a toad took up residence in Newsome’s flowerbed and would visit his porch every night.

Not only did Newsome decide to give his guest a proper name — Mr. Toad — he also decided to start making hats for the little critter in the hopes of making another small fry happy.

“I made hats to cheer up a friend’s son after his pet toad died,” Newsome told The Huffington Post. “He asked if my porch toad was still around, so I put some pictures of the toad with hats on Facebook to make him laugh.”

Newsome fashioned the hats out of foam paper, which he said seemed like “toad-friendly material.”

They’re also pretty small — perfect for a toad, but quite silly-looking on Newsome’s dog, Daisy, who is wearing the hat below for scale:

Newsome also told HuffPost that it seemed Mr. Toad wasn’t bothered by modeling the hats, either.

“Even after many hats and pictures, he still returned,” Newsome said. “Either he liked the hats or he couldn’t be fazed.”

Recently, Newsome decided to post the pictures of Mr. Toad working it in his fab hats on Reddit and the pictures soon went viral, receiving more than 1.1 million views.

“Hopefully, it or another toad will visit once the weather warms up,” Newsome said.

Here’s hopping that happens!

Here’s What Disney Couples Would Look Like Older And Still In Love

Your favorite Disney couples really did get their happily ever afters.

In the illustrations below, Pedro Fequiere of BuzzFeed imagines what Disney pairs would be up to after the credits rolled.

Cinderella and Prince Charming, for instance, are still making goo-goo eyes at each other and throw a damn good royal ball for their subjects.

Belle and Adam ― yeah, we forgot that was the Beast’s name, too ― continue to live in their castle with Cogsworth, Lumière and Mrs. Potts, who are thankfully now all retired. (They deserve it.)

Mulan and Shang and are still as sassy and competitive as ever.

“I could imagine them being really competitive at this age and training kids who want to be in the royal army,” Fequiere told The Huffington Post.

Now that Ariel and Eric’s daughter Melody is all grown up (yes, they had a kid. See: “The Little Mermaid II”), the empty nesters are busy traveling the world.

As for Aladdin and Jasmine, they’re in power following the death of Jasmine’s dad. (RIP, Sultan.) The Genie pops into the palace every now and then to sleep on the royal couch. (And of course Jasmine is still rocking the crop top and giving us major hair goals.)

Fequiere said he created the illustrations so fans could get a sense of closure over the fate of their favorite characters.

“Most stories start off with ‘once upon a time…’ and end with a ‘happily ever after…,” he said. “I thought it would be really interesting to see what that looked like.”

Head over to BuzzFeed to see the rest of the illustrations.

Here’s The PwC Employee Responsible For The Best Picture Mishap

The Oscar flub heard ‘round the world may have happened because of a tweet, reports say.

A PricewaterhouseCoopers spokesperson confirmed to The Huffington Post that Brian Cullinan, a managing partner at PwC, was responsible for handing Warren Beatty the wrong envelope, which led to the Best Picture winner debacle.

Three minutes before the envelope was handed off, Cullinan tweeted out a photo of Emma Stone with her new Oscar.

Cullinan shared the since-deleted tweet at 9:05 p.m. PT ― Beatty and co-presenter Faye Dunaway would take the stage to present Best Picture at 9:08pm PST.

The archived tweet can be seen below:

Cullinan accidentally gave Beatty a duplicate copy of the envelope containing Stone’s name as Best Actress. That duplicate was supposed to be thrown away. Not realizing it was the wrong envelope, Dunaway announced “La La Land” as the winner, when “Moonlight” was actually the Academy’s choice.

PricewaterhouseCoopers has already issued a statement regarding the mishap, but there has been no word from Cullinan on what happened or why he deleted his tweets.

The PwC spokesperson would “not comment on Brian’s tweet,” but we will keep an eye out for any other updates.

Here’s The Religious Imagery You May Have Missed In Beyoncé’s Grammy Performance

The walking goddess known to mortals as Beyoncé took a cue from her more celestial siblings during a performance at Sunday night’s 59th annual Grammy Awards.

The artist, who took home awards for Best Music Video and Best Urban Contemporary Album, performed just two songs during the ceremony ― “Love Drought” and “Sandcastles,” from the album “Lemonade.” Throughout her time onstage, she used imagery that appeared to draw from myths about divine motherhood found in several religious traditions.

Twitter fans were quick to point out the religious references. Some suggested that she was embodying Oshun (also spelled Osun), a Yoruba deity associated with love, fertility, and female sensuality. Oshun is often depicted wearing yellow and surrounded by sweet, life-giving waterFolktales told about Oshun claim that she was involved in the creation of the world, and that all living things owe their existence to her.

As a result of the slave trade, a reverence for Oshun and other deities whose origins lie in African spirituality, like Yemonja, was carried across the Atlantic. Yoruban female deities are still worshipped in countries like Brazil and Cuba

Beyonce has channeled Oshun before, in the song “Hold Up” from “Lemonade.”

Others suggested that Beyoncé was evoking the Virgin Mary during her Grammy performance. In the Christian tradition, Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ ― the holy woman who brought God into the world.

In religious art, Mary is often depicted with a halo surrounding her head, symbolizing the fact that she is no ordinary woman.

Another ode to Christian art was reflected in the way the stage was set. For part of the performance, Beyoncé walked on a long table surrounded by chairs ― evoking Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” But this time, it was Queen Bey at the head of the table.

Several other fiercely feminine religious myths made an appearance in the performance. At one point, a special effect made it seem as if Beyoncé had multiple arms. It could have been a reference to Hindu deities like the mother goddess Durga, or Kali, who is associated with death, sexuality, and motherly love.

Later on during the show, Beyoncé lay on a bed of flowers, a possible reference to the Roman goddess of love, Venus.

The performance came days after Beyoncé announced to the world that she was pregnant with twins. Her epic tribute to divine motherhood ended with a quote from the poet Warsan Shire, whose work featured heavily in “Lemonade.”

“If we’re gonna heal, let it be glorious,” she said.

Kristen Stewart Called Herself ‘So Gay’ On ‘SNL.’ Here’s Why It Matters.

Last night’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” was must-see TV for a number of reasons: The Grim Reaper was tapped to play Steve Bannon, Melissa McCarthy showed up and delivered a blistering, pitch-perfect portrayal of White House press secretary Sean Spicer, and host Kristen Stewart said the F-word on live TV during her monologue.

But there was another equally remarkable, though admittedly quieter, moment in the first five minutes of the show that you might have missed: Stewart, for the first time ever, publicly used the word “gay” in reference to herself (see the above video at the 2:26 mark).

Stewart’s sexual identity has been the subject of rumors for years. It’s difficult to avoid speculation about your private life when you’re not just famous but also one-half of one of the most famous couples in the world, as Stewart was when she dated “Twilight” co-star Robert Pattinson for several years. But even after that relationship ended, Stewart was still dogged by the press thanks to her involvement with a number of queer women in the entertainment industry, including Alicia Cargile, singer Annie Clark, who is better known as St. Vincent, and the woman she’s currently dating, model Stella Maxwell

To her credit, Stewart wasn’t exactly secretive about her relationships. In a 2016 interview with Elle UK, the actress used the word “girlfriend” to refer to Cargile, her partner at the time. She also said that “dating a girl” forced her to be more open about her relationships than she was when she was dating a guy. “To hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it, so I had to alter how I approached being in public,” she said, adding, “It opened my life up and I’m so much happier.”

But for all of her candor, Stewart had never used the word “gay” ― or any other label ― to identify herself until last night. And really, that’s fine. In fact, it’s very much on trend with how other young people think about their sexuality. A 2016 survey found that 35 percent of millennials identify as something other than exclusively heterosexual (and a whopping 52 percent of individuals between the ages of 13 and 20 reported the same) but didn’t necessarily use a term like “gay” or “bisexual” or “lesbian” in reference to themselves.

Many people find these labels to be less necessary than they once were. As queer people become more and more integrated into mainstream society, thanks to changing cultural norms triggered by things like marriage equality and higher visibility in the media, many feel less of a need to identify as any one thing ― or to talk about it in any kind of public way, like a splashy tell-all interview. But labels can still be hugely useful, not only for individuals to orient themselves within a community, but also as a way to continue to increase that aforementioned visibility and push the LGBTQ movement forward, especially in times of political and cultural uncertainty, like now.

When one of the biggest movie stars of the last 10 years refers to herself as “so gay” on one of the most-watched late-night television shows on the air, it forces people to reconfigure how they think about what it means to be “gay” and who and what that term includes. Suddenly, anyone who only knew Stewart as “that girl from ‘Twilight’” and “Robert Pattinson’s ex girlfriend,” is confronted by her sexuality in a new and startling way, and it upends assumptions about the community, which is exactly why coming out is still so crucial.

It should be noted that Stewart’s “so gay” comment was made in reference to ridiculous tweets President Donald Trump once sent about her relationship with Pattinson:

And, yes, the phrase was delivered with more than a hint of sarcasm and a certain degree of exasperation, which seemed to be leveled at Trump but also maybe at the world’s obsession with her sexuality. And that’s fair. It can’t be fun having your every move photographed and dissected. But in an era when LGBTQ rights are currently at risk in new and frightening ways, public acts of solidarity with the community, including coming out, are more important than ever.

It should also be noted that Stewart’s “so gay” comment doesn’t necessarily mean that she literally identifies as gay. She did date Pattinson, someone who, as far as we know, identifies as male, which may mean she identifies as bisexual or pansexual or sexually fluid or in some other way than “gay,” which is traditionally thought of as being sexually attracted to someone of the same gender. Perhaps she chose that phrase because it packed the most punch and would be the most instantly recognizable to those watching the show ― and because it’s probably the term most people have used behind her back ever since she started dating women. But she also may have decided at this point in her life that it’s the term that feels the most appropriate. We just don’t know.

Regardless, I had to catch my breath when I heard her say it last night. I’m proud of Stewart for standing up and joining the community in a way she hadn’t before, especially at a time when our community is hurting and scared. Coming out doesn’t happen just once and it’s rarely easy. Because heterosexuality is still the assumed default orientation in our society, every time a queer person meets someone new, there’s the chance they’ll be required to explain who they truly are, and in that moment exists the radical opportunity to challenge and change minds. Last night I believe Stewart probably did both, and I think we’re all a little bit better off because of it.

Here’s Rihanna And Calvin Harris’ ‘This Is What You Came For’ As An ’80s Power Ballad

The ‘80s were a glorious time.

We were given classic jams like Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” and Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.”

There was no better time for music.

Luckily, a YouTube user/genius named Saint-Laurent, with help on guitar by one Daniel Mackay, has taken a modern classic — Rihanna and Calvin Harris’ “This Is What You Came For” — and has turned it into an EPIC ‘80s power ballad.

The song, which usually makes you feel like you’ve had an espresso shot administered via IV, is slowed down and combined with a keyboard in this iteration. The result is a jam that makes us want to grab some leggings and start back-combing our hair immediately.

Enjoy the VHS-style remake of the music video above, complete with Rihanna rockin’ a Whitney-esque do.

Carrie Fisher died Tuesday at the age of 60, days after suffering a heart attack aboard a flight from London to Los Angeles.

In honor of the “Star Wars” icon’s refreshingly honest real-world persona, we’re highlighting this “Good Morning America” interview from December 2015, in which Fisher ― and her adorable dog Gary ― engage in what host Amy Robach calls “one of the most entertaining interviews ever.”

The interview begins with a relatively tame conversation about “The Force Awakens,” the 2015 Star Wars reboot Fisher played a role in, then veers wonderfully of course.

Robach honored Fisher with a tweet on Tuesday, recalling her conversation with a “brilliantly talented and funny” woman.

Ever Wonder Why We Kiss Under Mistletoe? Here’s Your Answer

Outside of gifting fruitcake, kissing under the mistletoe may be the most curious holiday tradition people observe.

So why do people hang up the white-berried plant every year and smooch when they’re under it? In the TED-Ed video above, botanist Carlos Reif schools viewers on the mythology and biology of the mysterious “kissing plant.”

“With its resilience and foliage that stays lush even while the surrounding trees lose their leaves, mistletoe fascinated our ancestors,” Reif explains. “They saw this as signs of the plant’s magical qualities and fertility.”

Watch the video above for more of mistletoe’s fascinating story.

The Most Successful People Meditate, Here’s How You Can Too

What program, habit or change do you think most people don’t do, (but can) that would have the greatest impact on their lives? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Tim Ferriss, author of three #1 New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestsellers, his latest book Tools of Titans is available now, on Quora.

Short but regular morning meditation. I found that more than 80% of the world-class performers I interviewed for Tools of Titans have some form of daily meditation or mindfulness practice. Both can be thought of as “cultivating a present-state awareness that helps you to be nonreactive.”

This applies to everyone from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Justin Boreta of The Glitch Mob, and from elite athletes like Amelia Boone to writers like Maria Popova. It’s the most consistent pattern of them all.

It is a “meta-skill” that improves everything else. You’re starting your day by practicing focus when it doesn’t matter (sitting on a couch for ten minutes) so that you can focus better later when it does matter (negotiation, conversation with a loved one, max deadlift, mind-melding with a Vulcan, etc.).

If you want better results with less stress, fewer “I should have said X” mental loops, etc., meditation acts as a warm bath for the mind. Perhaps you’re a world-conquering machine with elite focus, but you might need to CTFO (chill the fuck out) a few minutes a day before you BTFO (burn the fuck out).

Meditation allows me to step back and gain a “witness perspective” (as with psychedelics), so that I’m observing my thoughts instead of being tumbled by them. I can step out of the washing machine and calmly look inside it.

Most of our waking hours, we feel as though we’re in a trench on the front lines with bullets whizzing past our heads. Through twenty minutes of consistent meditation, I can become the commander, looking out at the battlefield from a hilltop. I’m able to look at a map of the territory and make high-level decisions. “These guys shouldn’t even be fighting over here. What the hell is Regiment B doing over there? Call them out. We need more troops around the ridge. For objectives, we should be going after A, B, and C in that order. Ignore all the other so-called emergencies until those are handled. Great. Now, deep breath, and . . . execute.”

A few options to get you started:

1. Use an app like Headspace or Calm. Headspace’s free “Take10” will guide you for ten minutes a day for ten days. A number of my guests also use Headspace to help them get to sleep.

2. Listen to a guided meditation from Sam Harris or Tara Brach. Maria Popova of Brain Pickings listens to the same recording every morning — Tara Brach’s Smile Guided Meditation recording from the summer of 2010.

3. Take a TM course (Learn about the Transcendental Meditation technique.). It will probably cost $ 1,000 or more, but this option offers a coach and accountability. For me, this is what kicked off more than 2 years of consistent meditation.

4. If you want to try mantra-based meditation without a course, you can sit and silently repeat one two-syllable word (I’ve used “na-ture” before) for 10 to 20 minutes first thing in the morning. TM purists would call this heresy, but you can still see results. Aim for physical comfort. No crossed legs or yoga-like contortion required. The default is sitting reasonably straight on a chair with your feet on the floor, hands on your thighs or in your lap, and back supported.

These 13 Happy Couples Sleep In Separate Beds. Here’s Why

A 2015 National Sleep Foundation survey found that as many as 25 percent of couples reported sleeping in separate beds ― and 10 percent of couples reported sleeping in separate bedrooms. But don’t assume it’s sign of relationship trouble.

While sleeping separately may sound like a 1950s “I Love Lucy” throwback, sleep experts say it might be the best thing you and your partner can do for your shut-eye.

Snoring, overactive sleepers, different temperature preferences or opposite sleep/wake times can ruin a partner’s rest, Phyllis Zee, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, told The Huffington Post.

And while bed sharing does help build emotional comfort and closeness that benefits relationships, sleeping side-by-side is not the only way to achieve that, Zee said. (Couples who sleep apart can try a morning or nighttime routine for cuddling and sex, she added.)

“Getting good quality sleep is important for relationships ― bed-sharing or not,” she said. “It’s a personal decision, not necessarily a sign of marital problems.”

Below, 12 people share why they made the decision to slumber apart and how it’s benefited their relationship.

“We’re both introverts so it’s nice to have our own space.”

“We’ve slept in separate rooms from the start. I have insomnia and I’m an extremely sensitive sleeper, everything wakes me up … We have different sleep/wake schedules ― I go to bed early and wake up late, he stays up late and gets up early. Things are much more peaceful having our own beds. We get much better rest and we still cuddle a ton and are very affectionate when we’re awake. We’re also both introverts so it’s nice to have our own space sometimes. We wouldn’t have it any other way.” – Erin Lidia

“I have severe insomnia and he snores like a beast.”

“I have severe insomnia and he snores like a beast. We typically watch TV/lay in the bedroom together ― then when its time to sleep, he goes to his room. Now I sleep when I am able fall asleep and he sleeps more because I’m not constantly hitting him to roll over.” – Sandie Massagli

“We sleep better.”

“Me and my husband sleep in separate rooms. We have twin boys and started sleeping separate when they were born two years ago. Then every minute of sleep was precious and necessary. We still do because we sleep better ― and he snores like a freight train.” – Brittany Hamrick Mazur

“This is what works for us.”

“My husband and I have slept in separate beds nearly our entire 15-year marriage. He snores, so I don’t sleep. I move around a lot and we have a firm mattress, so he doesn’t sleep. This is what works for us. It doesn’t mean we don’t love each other and aren’t intimate. We have two daughters and he still gives me butterflies.” – Katie VanVleet

“He is late to bed and late to rise, where I am early to bed and early to rise.”

“We have separate rooms. We love it. He is late to bed and late to rise, where I am early to bed and early to rise. I invite him up for sleepovers, but inevitably he heads down to his room. In the morning I take him in a cup of tea and hop into his bed. We just prefer this arrangement ― it does not mean we don’t love each other.” – Nicki Macrae

“I can read and write to my heart’s content.”

“When I worked I had to get up early and go to bed early, it made sense to let each other have that space. When I retired I looked forward to be able to read until I’m good and ready to put my book down. If that means the lights are on and I read all night, so be it. We both sleep better.

“I can go to my room and read and write to my heart’s content. We have been married for 16 years and love each other more than we ever thought possible. Both in our 60s and loving the liberation!” – Sheryl Perez

“We don’t argue about each other’s snoring anymore!”

“For the last year my husband and I have slept in separate beds and it has been amazing! Our relationship is stronger than ever and we don’t argue about each other’s snoring anymore!” – Tracy Ann

“We just sleep so much better without someone else in the bed.”

“Sleep is incredibly important to us both so, yes, separate beds in the same room. We have different mattress preferences, I’m a very light sleeper while he’s a deep sleeper who moves around a lot, I like lots of blankets and he does not, and we just sleep so much better without someone else in the bed to consider.

I like to hop in his bed in the morning to snuggle… We love it!
Kelsey Smith

“I like to hop in his bed in the morning to snuggle (and our beds aren’t that far apart from one another). We love it! I know people think it’s weird and think we don’t love each other or something, but it’s quite the opposite!” – Kelsey Smith

“He works early, I work late.”

“Best move I ever made! He works early, I work late. We are respectful of each other’s schedule. My bedroom is my girl cave, complete with an essential oil diffuser and heated mattress pad (that he preheats for me before he turns in). It is in no way reflective of our love for each other ― in fact quite the opposite. We have very limited time off together and that is [when] we have to get creative. But in the meantime, we sleep like babies.” – Linda Shaffer Fleming

“We really appreciate having our own space.”

“My husband and I have slept in separate bedrooms for the last five years. We both sleep better! We have different waking cycles and temperature fluctuations. And though we adore each other, we really appreciate having our own space.” – Diane Dunnington Hill

“[It’s] really considerate of the other person.”

“We have been married for 35 years ― we [have slept] in separate beds in the same room [for] the last 10 years or so. We are both up and down all night long at different times ― using the bathroom, dealing with some pain or another ― and this way we don’t wake the other one up every time since we sleep so little anyway.

“It doesn’t reflect how we feel for each other ― actually this is really considerate of the other person. We sleep when we can and we both completely understand that. Being together is all that matters. Separate beds might be the key to a long and successful marriage.” – Robin Thomas

“I feel overall more alert and happy.”

“My sleep is MUCH better and I feel overall more alert and happy. I think people assume there are problems in a marriage when you sleep apart. But honestly it’s made our marriage better, and there’s a certain maturity that comes with being able to say I love you and our life together, but from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m, I really need my quiet rest away from you.” – Elle O’Keefe

Here’s Some Surprisingly Positive News About Marriage In The U.S.

Here’s some heartening news about marriage: The U.S. divorce rate fell for the third consecutive year in 2015, dropping to the lowest it’s been in 40 years, according to a report based on Census data released Thursday.

The divorce rate ― represented as the number of divorces per 1,000 married women aged 15 and older ― was 16.9 divorces per 1,000 married women in 2015, a slight dip from the divorce rate of 17.6 in 2014. The rate is down 25 percent from 1980, according to the report, which was released by Bowling Green State University’s National Center for Marriage and Family Research.

“We may have reached the low point in the decline in marriage,” Susan L. Brown, a co-director at the center, told The Huffington Post. “Over the past few years, there has not been a further retreat from marriage among the US population.”

What’s more, marriage rates remain stable, with 32.3 marriages for every 1,000 unmarried women, up from 31.9 in 2014.

Though divorce rates have fallen among young people (35 and under), they’ve increased for middle-aged and older people, Brown said.

“Many of these Baby Boomers experienced the divorce revolution of the 1970s as young adults and then got remarried,” she told HuffPost. “The gray divorce rate for those in a remarriage is 2.5 times higher than for those in a first marriage.”

Meanwhile, younger generations are marrying later in life and being more selective in the process of finding a partner, she said.

“Young adults who get married tend to do so at later ages and they enjoy greater economic resources and they’re more likely to be college educated than their counterparts a generation ago,” she said. “Both of these factors are protective against divorce.”

Of course, the divorce rate varies by state: Washington, D.C. has the highest divorce rate, with nearly 30 marriages per 1,000 ending in divorce, followed by Wyoming (27.9), Nevada (25.7) and Arkansas (25.3)

Hawaii has the lowest divorce rate, with only 11 marriages per 1,000 ending in divorce, followed by Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Delaware, which were all under 13.
