Eckhaus Latta and Ugg Throw an L.A. Dinner Party in Honor of Their Collaboration

“You can see my house from here,” said L.A. native Este Haim on a summit of Montecito Heights overlooking Los Angeles on Wednesday night. Leave it to Eckhaus Latta to showcase someplace new, a part of town in Northeast L.A. — east of Echo Park — unfamiliar to most. “You can also see the high school I went to. This view doesn’t suck.”
The bicoastal brand, founded in New York City by Zoe Latta and Mike Eckhaus in 2011, was throwing an al fresco dinner party to celebrate their recent collaboration with Ugg.
“We listened to a lot of techno in the car,” she said of the ride over with sisters and Haim bandmembers, Danielle and Alana Haim. “We listened to a bunch of Eiffel 65. And do you remember Rockell? She was a late-Ninties techno artist. When we’re on our way to a party or dinner, we like to put on music that helps inform the vibe of the night to come.”
“These are my sisters,” she continued, as Danielle and Alana appeared. The three were donning the same outfit, head to toe.
“It’s legitimately the same garment,” said Este. “We had the opportunity to, and we just kind of grabbed the bull

Pratt Students Help Honor Pyer Moss’ Kerby Jean-Raymond at Annual Fashion Show

NEW YORK — Pratt showcased the work of 17 designers Thursday night at Spring Studios, and honored Pyer Moss’ Kerby Jean-Raymond with the Pratt Fashion Visionary Award.
In an interview Friday, Moss said he hoped students would remember that “the process is supposed to be long and intense, and if they stay the course they will eventually reach the goal and the purpose that was assigned to them by the universe. As artists, we go through the ebbs and flows and sometimes we don’t survive them. I just want them to know that at some point it does get better.”
Jean-Raymond received the award from his mentor Dapper Dan, who can appreciate that sentiment. Over the past four years, the two men have had many conversations and “Sunday talks,” Jean-Raymond said, adding that Dan has always been someone who he could count on pre-Gucci. “We navigated through different fashion industries, but at the end, we ended up in the same place,” Jean-Raymond said.
In addition to researching his next collection for his show in September, the designer said he is working on a signature shoe for Reebok. With his contract with Reebok scheduled to run out this year, the designer said he is

EXCLUSIVE: The Whitney Museum to Honor Michael Bloomberg at Gala and Studio Party

The Whitney Museum of American Art will honor Michael Bloomberg during its annual Gala and Studio Party on April 9.
The centrist politician, who two weeks ago revealed he would not be running for president in 2020, is “a great friend to the Whitney,” according to the museum’s Alice Pratt Brown director Adam D. Weinberg. Bloomberg’s honor stems from his philanthropic work and support for artists and cultural organizations; under his administration spanning 11 years, the founder of Bloomberg LP backed 500 public art projects.
There’s more cause for celebration, though: the gala, which this year will be sponsored by Michael Kors and Audi, marks the four-year anniversary of the museum’s move downtown to the Meatpacking District. Plus folks will be able to celebrate — or perhaps more accurately, mourn — the closing of the oft-Instagrammed exhibit “Andy Warhol — From A to B and Back Again.”
For Kors’ part, he said he’s looking forward to checking out the next thing the museum has to offer.
“I love the building and the fact that there’s always something new and provocative to see,” he said. “Having the Whitney in my backyard is a dream.”

Grieving Dad’s Words of Love After Son Was ‘Lured’ Into Woods in Rape and Murder: ‘I Will Always Honor Him’

In the wake of what authorities described as his 16-year-old son’s brutal rape and murder at the hands of a longtime friend, Washington dad Benjamin Eastman Jr.’s repeated message has been one of “love and togetherness.”

“I want thank the community and friends for all they have done for my family,” Eastman, who goes by “B.J.,” posted Thursday on Facebook, adding that words could not “explain the love feel right now.”

“There’s no way could ever get through this without it,” he wrote. “I would like everyone to remember my son how they want to but most of all how he has made our community and other communities far and wide stop and forget about judgment and hate.”

“Our community is full of love and togetherness right now,” he concluded his post. “My son made the world a better place. He continues to do so and I will always honor him for that. I ask that we all focus on that.”

Prosecutors say it’s too early in the case to discuss a possible motive in the beating death of Benjamin “Ben” Eastman III a week after his birthday — but the details released so far have attracted international attention.

Meanwhile, his community in southwestern Washington has drawn closer together in the shadow of such a vicious crime.

“When you have a county as close-knit and tight as Lewis and a town like Randle, which is even smaller, a tragic incident like this is going to impact everybody,” Lewis County Prosecuting Attorney Jonathan Meyer tells PEOPLE.

RELATED: Slain Boy’s Father Sat Front Row in Court to Face Accused Murderers — ‘I Wanted Them to Look at Me’

Charging documents previously obtained by PEOPLE show how, according to investigators, Ben was tricked into going in the woods sometime after texting early on June 24 with another 16-year-old boy, Benito Marquez, a friend and classmate who had known Ben for years.

Marquez and his older brother, 21-year-old Jonathon Adamson, “lured” Ben “under the guise of a camping trip,” prosecutors said in a probable cause affidavit.

There the pair allegedly carried out an assault they had planned together: striking Ben for some “20 to 45 minutes” and kicking him more than 100 times. During the attack, Ben was sexually assaulted with a stick, according to the affidavit.

Adamson and Marquez beat him in the head with a large rock, just to make sure he was dead, authorities believe.

Finally, they allegedly buried his body on the property of a relative where it was discovered three days later, after Ben was reported missing by his father. His shallow grave was marked with a homemade cross of sticks.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Marquez, who had seemingly posted on Facebook asking for help finding Ben before his body was discovered, was an early subject of the investigation, according to authorities. But he and Adamson then allegedly fled the county, traveling some 200 miles east, before being found by the state patrol on June 29, the probable cause affidavit states.

They were each interviewed by police and subsequently charged with first-degree rape and murder as well as tampering with physical evidence and unlawful disposal of remains, the affidavit states.

Detention records confirm they remain in custody in Lewis County in lieu of $ 10 million bond.

They have not entered pleas and an attorney representing them declined to comment to PEOPLE. They are scheduled to return to court on Thursday.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

While B.J., Ben’s dad, has spoken out about the suspects and sat front row in court at their first hearing, on Monday, he has largely kept the focus on his boy.

“I want everyone to remember the love we feel for each other,” he posted on Facebook Friday, following a vigil for Ben. “My son will live in our hearts.”

He also offered this: “Remember to smile or say hi to a stranger.”

Speaking to local TV station KOMO earlier this week, B.J. said, “It’s easy to get caught up in the negative aspect of this, but I remember my son and his smile.”

“There is evil people out there,” B.J. said then. “I don’t know what makes them tick. I don’t want to know. I’m loved and my son was loved and that’s all I’m about.”

Prosecutor Meyer tells PEOPLE Ben’s death — the violence and intimacy of it — is “hard to put into words.”

“Ben was a nice kid from a good family,” he says.

Others who knew the teen have also paid tribute to his love of the outdoors and sports, especially the Miami Dolphins, and his loyalty and light spirt.

“You’d be in a bad mood and he’d just walk in — you’d just be mad as mad as you could be and he’d just crack a smile and make you giggle just over anything, always,” Ben’s brother Derek Dunaway told KOMO.

“He really liked to stand up for his friends,” Principal Chris Schumaker told the Daily Chronicle after a vigil Tuesday night at Ben’s school, where he was a rising junior.

“A lot of the time, his friends would get in trouble because of his shenanigans and somehow he was able to kind of sidestep getting caught. So then towards the end he would kind of say, ‘Mr. Schumaker, it was kind of me, I deserve the detention,’ ” the principal recalled. “And I would say, ‘No, you know they did the crime, they get the time.’ He tried really hard to plea-deal consequences his friends earned. But in the end, I would just say ‘Ben, go back to class it’s okay. They’ll get through it, you’ll get through it. There’s always tomorrow.’ ”

John Stamos Shares Adorable New Photo of Son Billy in Honor of Father’s Day

John Stamos has played a longtime bachelor-turned-grandfather on Grandfathered and the beloved Uncle Jesse on Full House, but his most fulfilling role yet is being a dad to 2-month-old son Billy.

“My first Father’s Day means that I don’t have to hand a kid back to the parents when someone yells cut. It means when people ask me if I’m a father, I don’t have to use the goofy line, ‘No, but I play one on TV,’ ” Stamos said on Instagram Sunday along with an adorable father-son portrait.

“My first Father’s Day means that from this day forward— I will start to look my age (and older). Most importantly, it means that for the rest of my life, I’ll always be known as someone’s dad. And that’s all I ever wanted. Happy Father’s day,” he added.

Stamos became a father for the first time on April 10 when he and wife Caitlin McHugh welcomed their son William “Billy” Christopher into the world.

“Happy 1st Father’s Day to the best new daddy! I knew you’d be a great father, but you’ve exceeded expectations. You change diapers! Lol, and so much more, of course. We love you most,” McHugh said in a tribute to her husband on Instagram Sunday.

And after a celebratory Father’s Day weekend, Stamos is looking forward to spending more bonding time with his son.

The actor will be bringing Billy along on his first cross-country trip as the Fuller House star/producer returns to host PBS’s annual broadcast of A Capitol Fourth, the national 4th of July celebration in Washington, D.C.

RELATED: John Stamos, Joseph Duggar & More Celeb Guys Who Became Dads This Year

It’ll be baby Stamos’ first cross-country excursion, coming on the heels of a slightly not-so-smooth local road trip.

“It was Mother’s Day and Caitlin’s birthday, so we went down to Laguna , and it was the first time we didn’t have a nanny — that was rough!” he told PEOPLE in late May. “ so far, it’s been a dream, and when I look at him, I feel like I’ve been thinking about that face for a long time.”

RELATED: John Stamos Admits He Never Thought He’d Have a Child: ‘I’ve Cried Most Days’ Since Son’s Birth

Stamos also said that fatherhood has been everything that he expected it would be, and it’s deepened his connection to his country.

“I always knew it was going to be like this,” he explained. “It took me longer than it should’ve, but I knew that I would be a family and be contributing to this country, and holding onto the morals and the values that my parents had, that I like to think of the world having. It’s a time to be kind and graceful to people. It just takes so much energy to block all the negativity. I’m really trying to get people together.”

Olivia Wilde Recalls How Her Water Broke at a N.Y.C. Concert in Honor of Her Son’s 4th Birthday

Olivia Wilde‘s water broke at the most inopportune time when she was pregnant with son Otis Alexander.

In honor of her son’s fourth birthday, the 34-year-old actress revealed that she began going into labor while she was in the middle of enjoying a concert in New York City.

“Four years ago today we were at a @jonbatiste concert at Webster Hall in Manhattan, and this little one decided he wanted to come out and join the dance party,” she wrote on Friday, alongside a picture of her son wearing a birthday crown and holding up 4 fingers.

Wilde and fiancé Jason Sudeikis are also parents to 18-month-old daughter Daisy Josephine.

Continuing, she added, “My water broke somewhere up on the balcony. So next time you’re there, think of us.”

And while the couple could have immediately left to go to the hospital, Wilde says they decided to stay put until the concert ended.

“We obviously stayed til the end of the show. Cuz that’s how we do.) Happy birthday, Otis!!!” she wrote.

The Booksmart director and Chief Brand Activist for True Botanicals recently told PEOPLE that she’s deliberately making a point not to force her son into enjoying gender-specific activities and colors.

“ loves Moana, obviously, and when he thinks about Moana, he thinks of himself as Moana,” explained Wilde. “I love hearing him sing … it’s the best when you can watch them singing in the backseat of your car, and he’s just like, ‘I wish I could be the perfect daughter!’ And he’s just belting it out.”

She continued, “That’s so great because at a certain age he’s going to be like, ‘Well, I can’t, that’s … ‘You know, and he still doesn’t judge things like pink, or dance or gymnastics. These aren’t things that are gender-specific yet.”

“I don’t know why at a certain point we tell them that’s for boys and that’s for girls, but I’m going to do my best to not force that delineation,” Wilde added.

Prince William Hands Richard James a Queen’s Honor

JAMES’ DAY: Savile Row tailor Richard James swung by Buckingham Palace on Friday to collection his Queen’s honor for services to men’s fashion. He received the OBE, or Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, from Prince William, and wore the gold cross-shaped medal on the front pocket of his peacock-blue jacket.
“Prince William was delightful, and he remembered me, which was very sweet,” said James who’d visited Kensington Palace years ago to alter some suits that he’d made for the prince. He didn’t make as much fuss about his own suit. “It’s off the peg,” he said during a celebratory Champagne tea at his store on 29 Savile Row. The soggy snowstorm outside did nothing to dampen the mood inside, as James was pulled in multiple directions by friends and well-wishers.
The past 12 months have been major for James, who last year marked the brand’s 25th anniversary and sold the company to one of his clients, Charles S. Cohen, the American multibillionaire. Later this year, Cohen plans to open the first Richard James store in New York, on Park Avenue and 57th Street.

Hermès to Honor Window Designer Leïla Menchari

WINDOW WORLDS: Regular passers-by of the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris from across the past three decades will be familiar with the traffic-stopping, fantasy windows of Leïla Menchari for the Hermès flagship.
Paying tribute to the Tunisian designer’s love of craft and materials, the French leather goods house this fall is to dedicate a much bigger window to her work with a series of eight tableaux conceived by scenographer Nathalie Crinière in collaboration with Menchari set to go on display at the Grand Palais.
Titled “Hermès à tire-d’aile – Les mondes de Leïla Menchari,” which loosely translates as “The Hermès Worlds of Leïla Menchari,” the exhibition is set to run from Nov. 8 to Dec. 3.
A graduate of the Beaux-Arts, Menchari started working under Hermès’ former head of windows, Annie Beaumel, in the early Sixties. She took over designing the house’s windows from 1978 to 2013, working with a number of artisans from the Hermès universe and beyond, ranging from stone-cutters to sculptors, while also directing the Hermès color committee.
Windows created by Menchari have included giant waves crafted from marble, fantasy Kelly bags made out of metal, multicolored saddles with wings and a Paris-themed window with monuments in organza.

14 Signs From The Women’s March To Honor Roe v. Wade’s 44th Anniversary

WASHINGTON, D.C. ― The Women’s March on Washington (and the hundreds of sister marches around the nation and world) took place the day before the 44th anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Many D.C. marchers proudly held signs calling for affordable and accessible reproductive healthcare for women. From the age-old rallying cry of “My body, my choice,” to more creative slogans such as “Leave your rosaries off my ovaries,” each sign was an important reminder of the positive impact Roe v. Wade had on so many women’s lives.

Get Janet Mock’s And Issa Rae’s Books For Free In Honor Of Women’s Marches

Attention, everyone in the continental U.S.!

Atria Books announced on Friday that it would be offering seven eBooks as free downloads during the weekend of President Donald Trump’s inauguration. No, the free books are not meant as a tribute to our new leader. They are meant to celebrate the various Women’s Marches taking places across the country.

“The seven titles are a collection of books that will inspire and empower women,” Atria, about to celebrate its 15th anniversary, explained in a press release. “All are stories of strong women overcoming adversity, taking second chances, and figuring out their place in the world.”

The free eBooks include:

  • Britt-Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman

  • House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende

  • Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae

  • Girl Who Escaped ISIS by Farida Khalaf

  • Things I Should Have Told My Daughter by Pearl Cleage

  • Niña Alemana (The German Girl Spanish Edition) by Armando Lucas Correa

  • Redefining Realness by Janet Mock.

Judith Curr, president and publisher of Atria Publishing Group, explained that the free downloads will “honor everyone marching and those who can’t participate.” She added:

“[W]e’re giving these ebooks away as a gift because we feel they embody the spirit of the weekend. For those who might be taking public transportation any one of these titles is a reward and a wonderful way to spend some time with strong women in the fiction and non-fiction world.”

The above titles will be available to download ― one title per customer in the continental U.S., while supplies last ― from Friday, Jan. 20, through Saturday, Jan. 21.

Oregon bookstore Broadway Books also opted for solidarity on Jan. 20 by handing out free copies of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s We Should All Be Feminists. For those in Washington, D.C., Sankofa Bookstore and Cafe has its own literary event planned, too.

Atria is an imprint of Simon & Schuster, the same publishing house that’s found itself at the center of a book world controversy due to its decision to ink a $ 250,000 deal with “alt-right” icon Milo Yiannopoulos

If this news makes you queasy, you’re not alone. But know that titles like Redefining Realness and Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl are certainly worth reading.

Maid Of Honor Makes Wedding Unforgettable (But Not In A Good Way)

Brian and Jennifer Butler will never forget their wedding day ― though they’d probably like to.

That because Amanda Willis, Jennifer’s Maid of Honor, took away the focus from the bride after getting arrested for numerous charges including larceny, battery, grand theft of a motor vehicle, and violation of probation.

The Butlers, of Charlotte County, Florida, say that Willis behaved herself during their wedding. It was during the cake ceremony and first dance that she allegedly turned into a Maid of Dishonor.

The bride told WBBH TV that she saw Willis drink an entire bottle of Fireball by herself.

“She was drunk within 20 minutes to half an hour,” Jennifer Butler told the station.

It was then that this “Bridesmaidzilla” allegedly set a standard that will be hard for future inappropriate Wedding Party members to top.

First, Willis allegedly took the groom’s car keys from his pocket and attempted to drive away.

Willis almost ran him over while driving away, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by The Huffington Post. She drove towards the parking lot while the groom was hanging out the passenger side door. He managed to stop the car by grabbing the emergency brake.

Other guests wrestled Willis out of the car and back into the reception.

“She went back inside…grabbed up the big bottle of Captain Morgan and just guzzled it,” Jennifer Butler told WBBH TV.

Best man Robert Templeton told police he tried to calm down Willis, but she struck him in the head.

Deputies were called to the scene and took Willis into custody. On the way to the Charlotte County Jail, Willis allegedly banged her head against the divider in the squad car, according to the police report.

When the squad car arrived at the jail. police said Willis claimed to be having an asthma attack and lay down in the back of the car, shaking as if she were having a seizure.

She was then taken to a local hospital where she allegedly exposed herself to deputies and assaulted two EMTs, one of whom was over 65. Oh, and she kicked over a bedpan, according to the report.

Willis was taken to the Charlotte County Jail after being charged with grand theft of an auto, two counts of battery on an officer or firefighter, battery on a person 65 years or older, intentional battery, petit larceny in the first degree and violation of parole.

She remains behind bars in lieu of $ 25,000 bail.

Oh, in case you’re wondering, Jennifer Butler said she no longer considers Willis to be her friend, according to WBBH TV.

I Was There: Inside Hillary Clinton’s Election Night Party — Without the Guest of Honor

They arrived wearing their red, white, and Hillary Clinton finest: sweaters with their candidate’s name woven into the nap, custom painted “Nasty Woman” leather jackets, yards of sequins that reflected the excitement felt all around. The supporters who came to New York City’s Javits Convention Center were ready for a party on Election Night.

Unfortunately, the party never happened.

Actress Debra Messing had on comfy-looking bright red sneakers — she was in it for the long haul. Scores of young women wore “staff” badges — though many of them were volunteers. Two little girls showed up with their family wearing “Madam President” buttons and with their faces painted red and blue; bravehearts indeed.

With some early Tuesday predictors estimating that Clinton had upwards of an 85 percent chance to become the first female U.S. President, it seemed likely there was an equal chance of showers from the confetti cannons stationed on either side of the main floor where the Democratic candidate was expected to speak.

Two days earlier, the venue was mostly quiet, save for some campaign staff handing out press credentials. I showed up late in the afternoon on Sunday, and with the shift to daylight savings time (really? An extra hour of this election?) the windowed convention center near the Hudson River was aglow in the sunset. It was impossible to miss the symbolism: That was some big glass ceiling.

By 6 p.m. on Tuesday, blocks of 11th Avenue were cordoned off by police and filled with Clinton fans who would be treated to a show by Katy Perry, and speeches from local Democrats. In between acts, election returns came up on the big screens stationed around the space and outdoors. Connecticut goes for Clinton: Cheers! New Mexico: Cheers!

Having taken to heart the “Don’t boo—vote!” directive from President Obama, there was little in the way of jeering when Donald Trump voters turned a state red; instead it just got quiet. Kentucky. Georgia. Indiana. No big deal, people reminded one another, those are usually Republican states. Here, let’s take a selfie with Mayor Bill DeBlasio in the background.

Then Virginia, Tim Kaine’s home state, was teetering. (It eventually went blue.) And Florida. And people began having the Florida flashbacks: “It reminds me a lot of Gore-Bush,” said a woman from the Virgin Islands. “We all went to bed that night thinking Gore had won and woke up and Bush had won. So I’m not giving up hope.”

Her friend, wearing a ‘HillYeah’ button on her hat, added, “I think we thought she would have been ahead more at this stage.”

Small groups gathered around the TV monitors in the basement cafeteria. There was a run on pasta and beer.

“It is definitely nerve-wracking,” said a supporter from Connecticut, smiling insistently. Moments before she had told me, “The energy is fantastic,” and she seemed to be sticking to that. Her friend wasn’t so sure. Maybe they should think about driving home? “I want to see history being made and I’m afraid if I leave I’ll regret it if she does win.”

The night wore on. The cafeteria closed. The beer bottles emptied, the starchy comfort food consumed. The TV monitors continued to bleed red. The young women volunteers were rotating in and out of the ladies’ room, eyes red.

The faithful were trying to hold on to hope, but it wasn’t easy.

A New York supporter whose daughter was about the age of these campaign workers told me, “My heart is hanging on every word here. I’m on the verge of tears. I’m so upset right now. I have a 20-year-old daughter in college, and I just feel if he gets to be president … It’s all over. It’s just … nothing.”

A rumor circulated after midnight that the venue had to be cleared out by 2 a.m. Suddenly it was after 1 a.m., and the dais remained empty. The crowds were still, well, crowded. And they did what crowds do: They huddled, goofed for the cameras when turned on them, and sang along to the piped-in music.

By 1:30 a.m. or so, two things happened: we began to hear that Secretary Clinton would not speak tonight, but instead would send campaign chairman John Podesta, as at least three states were still too close to call.

The PA system blared what is usually a party-pleaser: Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.” On the screen the crowd saw itself reflected, and gamely joined in with Steve Perry’s vocals: “Don’t stop believing, hold on to that fe-eee-lin’. ” Was anyone else thinking about what these words mean? Did anyone else feel that this was as final as the Sopranos finale that had used the song before cutting to black?

Though the big screens, still on closed circuit, didn’t announce it in the moment, Pennsylvania was called for Trump, effectively giving him the win. Podesta took the stage, told us all to go home and get some sleep. There would be more in the morning.

And there was: About eight hours later, the candidate finally spoke. But the party was over, and her supporters — many more than had been at that windowed convention center — gathered in our shared virtual space to hear the first woman to win the popular vote for United States president offer her apologies for not winning the election. “This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for,” said Sec. Clinton. “And I’m sorry we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country.”

No, this was not the outcome that those who had traveled to the Javits Center had wanted.

I listened to the worries, and tears, and frustrations of supporters as they filed out into the New York City night, past a street vendor with a keen market sense selling Hillary T-shirts marked down to $ 5. I didn’t hear anyone asking for their candidate’s apology. There were practical matters to attend to: Would Uber be able to get through the police barricades? Is the subway okay to take at 3 a.m.?

I took a last look at the building, still lit, and that glass ceiling still frustratingly untouched.

Man Plants Endless Lanes Of Sunflowers To Honor Beloved Late Wife, Benefit Cancer Patients

This man’s love for his late wife has only blossomed.

Don Jaquish‘s beloved wife, Babette, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of cancer, back in 2006, according to ABC News. Sadly, she died late last year.

Babette was a huge fan of sunflowers, so Don honored her in the most fitting way possible — by planting a giant stretch of  sunflowers for her. They bloomed this month and Don plans to harvest and sell the seeds to help benefit cancer patients as part of his organization Babbette’s Seeds of Hope, ABC News reported.

“She got to be known as the sunflower lady of the community,” Don told ABC News of his wife. “So after she passed away, I thought it would be a tribute to her to plant 4.5 miles of sunflowers on each side of Highway 85.”

The “sunflower strip” covers the land of five different farms, KARE 11 reported. Don, who planted the flowers over a span of a week, was able to rent land from his neighbors at a reasonable price to complete the project.

He told ABC News that it was Babbette who originally came up with the idea of selling sunflower seeds and donating a portion of the proceeds to cancer research. About a month after his wife’s death, Don formed Babbette’s Seeds of Hope. Through the group, he’ll sell the seeds in bags, which will soon be available for purchase, with Babbette’s face on them along with her story printed on them. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to hospitals, research and patient advocacy, according to the company’s website.

It’s something the loving husband says would’ve made his wife proud.

“I think she would be smiling,” Don told ABC News. “We had an amazing response. We’ve had people all over the world send emails.”

While the sunflowers took a lot of time and effort to plant, Don says it was all worth it — especially for a woman whose spirit matched the beauty of the flowers.

“They fit her personality,” the widower told KARE11. “She’d walk into a room and her smile would light up a whole room.”

Months after her Babbette’s death, Don found a note from his wife stuck in a folder. In light of the sunflowers and their seeds, her words certainly ring true.

“You move on and live each day,” Babbette wrote, according to KARE11. “Feel me in the morning air, and when you wake up and make your coffee. I will be there always.”

Former Marine Travels 15 Miles On Horse And Foot To Honor Late Veteran

There was no horsing around for this man, who stopped at nothing to honor a fellow veteran.

Richard Kowalker, a 66-year-old from Middletown, Connecticut, often attends veteran funerals with his “riderless horses” as part of a tradition to honor a soldier’s service. In this custom, a horse with boots set backwards and no rider in the saddle follows the casket.

The 66-year-old, who served as a Marine in Vietnam, was set to attend a funeral for World War II veteran Norman Varney this past Saturday. But the night before, he realized that his horse trailer was damaged and he would be unable to cart his horses there. That setback didn’t stop Kowalker, however; he alternately walked and rode the two horses through the night, traveling more than 15 miles to make it to the funeral, WSFB reported.

“The Marine Corps motto is “semper fidelis” — Latin for ‘always faithful.’ … I have a lifelong commitment to adhere to. Once a Marine, always a Marine,” Kowalker told The Huffington Post in an email. “Sgt. Norman Varney was at Iwo Jima in World War II, the most famous battle in Marine Corps history. I considered it an honor to be in the presence of such people. … I am quite sure he would have done the same for me if the situation was reversed.”

The extraordinary gesture touched many and a fundraising page was created to help pay for a new horse trailer. Donors have already doubled the original goal, raising more than $ 4,000 for Kowalker.

Police from different towns along the walk escorted him during his trek, according to the fundraising page. Later on, Ken Yavis, who owns a horse trailer, spotted Kowalker, his horse, Melody, and his friend’s horse, Sassy, WFSB reported. Yavis got his own trailer and helped Kowalker for the rest of the way, allowing the animals to take a break at his house and eventually bringing them to the service.

Yavis, like many others, was moved by Kowalker’s devotion.

“I never got a chance to serve,” Yavis told WFSB. “But someone like that who continues to give, you have to help him.”

For the humble Kowalker, his actions weren’t anything out of the ordinary.

“I gave my word and I like to be a person of my word,” he told WFSB.

To learn more about Richard Kowalker or to donate, visit the fundraising page created for him here.

6 Ways to Honor Dad on the Big Day

Calling all Father of the Bride fans! Planning a wedding? Don’t send dad running wildly for the hot dog buns.

Just in time for Father’s Day (which also happens to fall right in the middle of wedding season), here are a few ideas for honoring Dad on the big day. No need to stick to tradition – there are countless ways to include the father figure in your life that don’t include walking you down the aisle.

2015-06-17-1434583689-8321152-MV5BMjM3NzE4NzIxOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODg2NjIyMDE._V1_SY317_CR00214317_AL_.jpg

A Special Note in the Program
Including a sweet note to your dad in the wedding program will not only give him a precious memory he can physically hold onto, but it’s a great way to honor him on the big day. That special, public shout-out will give him some widespread recognition for the role he has played and the ways in which he has influenced you.

Father-Daughter Photos
It is common for couples to do first look photos before the wedding, so why not do a quick series of pre-ceremony photos with your dad? You can share some sweet one on one time together before you walk down the aisle and the photos will help you remember those precious moments forever. Pop a favorite photo in a frame for a great future Father’s Day gift!

Share a Secret Toast
Those final moments before the wedding can be nerve-wracking. An intimate toast with just your dad is a great way to calm your nerves before the ceremony begins and the festivities whisk you away.

Have Dad Officiate
The wedding officiant is such a meaningful role – why not give the honor to your dad? Having dad, or your future father-in-law, perform your wedding ceremony will surely make for an emotional and memorable day for all!

Invite Dad to do a Reading
If you’d prefer to have a rabbi, priest, minister or other loved one officiate, but still want your father involved in the ceremony, invite him do a reading. It can be a poem, a scripture, something he wrote or even a passage from a favorite childhood book. Your dad will still feel included without having to take on the responsibility of getting ordained and officiating.

Keep his Memory Close
Dad can’t be with you for the big day? Keep his memory close by tying a miniature framed photo to your bouquet, mentioning him in the program or playing his favorite song on the dance floor.

At the end of the day your dad (or the special father-figure in your life) wants the best for you and just seeing you glowing and happy throughout your big day, is enough to melt his heart.

Bridget Barkan Puts A Modern Spin On A Judy Garland Classic In Honor Of Homeless LGBT Youth

Among gay audiences, Judy Garland is one of few performers who never seems to go out of style.

New York singer-actress Bridget Barkan proved that point at 2014’s “Night of a Thousand Judys” when she crooned a tender version of “As Long as He Needs Me,” which was introduced in the Broadway musical “Oliver!” and performed by Garland on her television series, “The Judy Garland Show,” in 1963.

Now in its fifth year, “Night of a Thousand Judys” — which is a special presentation of New York- and Los Angeles-based actor, writer and performer Justin Sayre’s variety show, “The Meeting,” and timed to coincide with LGBT Pride Month — will benefit the Ali Forney Center, an advocacy group dedicated to homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) teens and young adults.

As in previous installments, performers from Broadway, television and downtown cabaret will hit New York’s Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Center June 1 to croon songs made famous by Garland during her fabled career. The 2015 lineup includes Melissa Errico, Liz Callaway, Michael McElroy, Lauren Worsham and The Skivvies, among others.

Sayre interviewed Ali Forney Center founder Carl Siciliano for his “Sparkle & Circulate with Justin Sayre” podcast. You can check that out here.

Meanwhile, you can also view some previous performances from “The Meeting” on Sayre’s official YouTube page. For more Sayre, head to Facebook and Twitter, too.

“Night of a Thousand Judys” plays New York’s Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Center on June 1. Head here for more details.

BET Awards Honor Pharrell, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj And August Alsina

LOS ANGELES, June 29 (Reuters) – R&B star Pharrell, rapper Nicki Minaj and newcomer August Alsina led the winners at the Black Entertainment Television (BET) awards on Sunday, which also honored veteran soul singer Lionel Richie.

Pharrell kicked off the show with “Come Get It Bae” and won two awards, including best male R&B/pop artist. Beyonce was named best female R&B/pop singer, and closed the show with a sultry performance of “Partition” with husband Jay Z. The couple also won best collaboration for “Drunk In Love.”

Richie, 65, received the lifetime achievement award for his prolific career as part of Motown group The Commodores and as a solo artist.

“Soul is a feeling, not a color. Talent is a god given gift and not a category, and out of the box is the magical place where true talent goes to thrive and breathe,” Richie said as he accepted the award.

John Legend, Ledisi and Yolanda performed Richie’s classic love songs “Hello”, “Still” and The Commodores’ “Brick House” and “Jesus is Love”. Richie sang “Easy” and “All Night Long”.

The BET awards, held in Los Angeles, celebrates black musicians, actors and athletes. It is hosted by cable TV network Black Entertainment Television, part of Viacom Inc., and the show was preceded by violence at unofficial parties ahead of the show in which one person was killed.

New Orleans singer Alsina was named best new artist and Lil Wayne’s rap collective Young Money scored best group.

Drake won best male hip hop artist, but was not available to collect his award. Minaj was named best female hip hop artist and threw a little dig at other rappers by saying: “When you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.”

Comedian Chris Rock hosted the show, throwing jokes and jibes and handing out chicken and waffles to the audience. The almost four-hour ceremony toplined high-profile performances from some of the music world’s biggest names.

Usher referenced his 20-year career with a medley of his hits, Minaj performed “Pills N’ Potions” on a stage with giant psychedelic mushrooms and R&B star Chris Brown joined Lil Wayne to perform “Loyal”.

Australian newcomer Iggy Azalea joined rapper T.I. to perform “No Mediocre” and her hit single “Fancy”. The show also served up 1990s nostalgia with R&B groups Troop, Color Me Badd and Silk singing a medley of classic hits.

Oscar-winning historical drama “12 Years A Slave” swept the film categories with Oscar-winning newcomer Lupita Nyong’o named best actress and Chiwetel Ejiofor named best actor. Neither were on hand to accept their awards.

Civil rights activist Myrlie Evers-Williams accepted the humanitarian award commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act signed into law in 1964.

Daytime Emmy Awards Honor Steve Harvey, Ellen DeGeneres And ‘The Young And The Restless’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ellen DeGeneres, Steve Harvey and the soap opera “The Young and the Restless” were among the 41st annual Daytime Emmy winners.

“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” received its eighth trophy as outstanding entertainment talk show at the awards ceremony Sunday in Beverly Hills. The “Steve Harvey” show was honored as outstanding informative talk show, while Harvey won as best game show host for “Family Feud.”

CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” captured six awards, including honors for best drama series and best lead actor for star Billy Miller. Eileen Davidson of NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” was named best drama series actress.

ABC’s “Good Morning America” won the best morning program Emmy.

The Daytime Emmys introduced new awards for Spanish-language shows. Trophies went to Telemundo’s “Un Nuevo Dia” as best morning program, to CNNE’s “Clix” as best entertainment show and to Rodner Figueroa of Univision’s “El Gordo y la Flaca” as best daytime talent in Spanish.

CBS, which received eight creative arts Daytime Emmys for technical achievements at a ceremony last week, emerged as the network leader with a total of 14 awards after Sunday’s ceremony.

PBS received a combined 13 awards, with six for HUB Network; five for TOLN.com; four for ABC and three for NBC.

The ceremony, which aired on the cable news channel HLN last year and in 2012 after losing its longtime home on the broadcast networks, this year settled for streaming the proceedings online. The change in fortune reflects the dwindling daytime audience and programming shifts.

Entertainment news program (tie): “Entertainment Tonight,” ”Extra.”
