Somerset House Honors Charlie Brown and Enduring Power of ‘Peanuts’

COMIC RELIEF: Somerset House is bringing print to life with its latest exhibition, “Good Grief, Charlie Brown” which opens its doors on Oct. 25 and runs until March 3.
Spanning two floors, the show highlights George M. Schulz’s cartoons and impact on contemporary culture. On display are more than 80 original illustrations, first-edition comic books and vintage sweaters featuring iconic “Peanuts” screen prints on loan from Kim Jones, Dior’s artistic director.
Elsewhere, there are large-scale comic strips plastered on the walls of the exhibition, while personal belongings of the artist, such as Schulz’s favorite drawing tools, are showcased.
Contemporary artists also speak to the enduring power of the comic in a video screened upstairs in the cinema room. Issues such as feminism, mental health and friendship are highlighted.

Other items include tote bags, a stainless-steel flask, and a selection of notebooks with original illustrations as well as contemporary interpretations of the cartoon characters.

Queen Hands Honors to Jo Malone, Charlotte Tilbury, Caroline Neville

LOCAL COLOR: It’s that time of year again, when Queen Elizabeth doles out her birthday honors and the royals and British military celebrate the monarch’s official birthday with the Trooping the Colour parade.
Although the queen’s 92nd birthday fell on April 21, the official celebration always takes place in June, a tradition that dates to 1748. A great display of British military might, the event involves the guards of the Household Division and Horse Guards in the British Army.
The new Duke and Duchess of Sussex took part for the first time, with Meghan Markle wearing an off-the shoulder rose-colored dress by Carolina Herrera and a Phillip Treacy hat. She also made her first appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, waving to the public as a fully-fledged member of Britain’s royal family.

Emma Stone Honors 50th Anniversary of Billie Jean King’s Triple Crown Win at the U.S. Open

On Saturday Emma Stone performed a very special tribute to Billie Jean King in honor of the 50th anniversary of the tennis icon’s triple crown win in 1967.

Together with Tony nominated singer/songwriter Sara Barellis, Stone paid tribute to King at a pre-match ceremony at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City, where the U.S. Open is currently being held.

In 1967, King won her triple crown by finishing first in the women’s singles, women’s doubles, and women’s mixed doubles championship at the U.S. Open.

RELATED VIDEO: Emma Stone Reveals Her Favorite Movie Moment of All Time

Stone is playing King in the upcoming movie Battle of the Sexes, which tells another remarkable story from King’s career.

In 1973, King famously defeated ex-champion Bobby Riggs at the Houston Astrodome in a match nicknamed “Battle of the Sexes.” Riggs thought there was no way a woman could beat him at tennis, but clearly he was wrong.

At the time so many people turned in to watch “Battle of the Sexes” that it became the most-watched sporting event of all time.

Curiously enough, during filming Stone rarely sought King out to discuss her character, although King had an explanation for that.

“She didn’t want to because I’m in my 70s, and she said I’m more fully formed as a person,” King said. “She said, ‘I want to know what was feeling at 28 and 29 when she played Bobby.’ That’s where she had to concentrate.”

Battle of the Sexes will be released in theaters on Sept. 22.

Diva Devotee Seth Sikes Honors Pride With A Celebratory New Show

Few performers are as perfectly suited for Pride weekend as Seth Sikes.

The 33-year-old cabaret star has been thrilling audiences with his tribute concerts to Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli for nearly three years. On June 24, however, he’ll go all out with a no-holds-barred show at New York’s Feinstein’s/54 Below featuring songs made famous by the aforementioned divas, as well as Bernadette Peters and Barbra Streisand. (Catch a sneak peek of Sikes performing a tune from the musical “Gypsy” above.)

“Usually my goal is to keep the songbook alive and celebrate the ladies,” Sikes told HuffPost. “But this time, the goal is to get people in a happy, happy mood to go out dancing afterward… what celebrates Pride more than a bunch of diva songs?”

What began as a “one-night-only stunt” in 2014 has taken Sikes across the country, and even internationally, since then. Most recently, he celebrated what would have been Garland’s 95th birthday with a performance in London ― a particularly fitting tribute, as the “Wizard of Oz” star capped off her unparalleled career with a string of shows in England’s capital.

Of course, Sikes is aware that his Pride weekend show comes at a time when many LGBTQ people are still reeling from the election of President Donald Trump, who ran on an explicitly anti-queer platform. The performer, who has not shied away from politics on social media, won’t mention Trump during his performance, but rather “have some fun” while reminding people that the LGBTQ community is “mighty and not going away.”

“I talked a little bit about Trump in my last show,” he said. “But frankly, at this point, I’m so sick of hearing about him and talking about him, I probably won’t bring it up at all this time. Let’s forget the asshole for a moment!”

For now, Sikes couldn’t be happier to be honoring Pride with a brand-new show. “I think Pride is about family and community and a celebration of our unique culture. We have a lot of that to celebrate right now ― including our lady icons ― and we have a lot to be grateful for, including marriage equality,” he said. “But we can’t take any of it for granted.”

Seth Sikes performs at New York’s Feinstein’s/54 Below June 24. Next up, he’ll visit the Crown & Anchor in Provincetown, Massachusetts on July 8 and Aug. 7.

NEW YORK — The Accessories Council has revealed this year’s winners for the annual ACE Awards. Topping the list are Betsey Johnson, who will pick up the Style Icon Award; Kendra Scott, this year’s Breakthrough Award winner; Jessie Randall whose Loeffler Randall company will be honored as Brand of the Year, and Monica Rich Kosann, who will take home the Trailblazer Award.
This year’s Fashion and Technology Award will be given to the Black Eyed Peas musician and entrepreneur Will.i.am. His pursuits range from working with Apple Music’s Jimmy Iovine, coaching on “The Voice Kids,” acting as a strategic board adviser for Atom, the app-based bank. Joseph Altuzarra will be honored with the Designer of the Year Award. After Kering took a minority stake in the business in 2013, the designer delved into leather goods, followed by footwear and handbags. As a sign of Altuzarra’s confidence in the category, accessories and leather goods were spotlighted in the brand’s fall campaign.

‘Women Photograph’ Honors The Female Photojournalists Documenting Our World

Photojournalism is far removed from its glory days ― the so-called Golden Age of the 1930s to 1960s ― when photographers toted Leicas and experimented with the first flash bulbs. Back then, behemoths like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa and other founding members of Magnum Photos dominated the field, delivering onto the public historic images of military events, far-away countries, and images of the world people would otherwise never see.

Decades later, after magazines began to decline in popularity, so too did the prestige of photojournalism. Nonetheless, those left on the front lines of professional photojournalism are still responsible for capturing some of the world’s most captivating images. Take, for example, Associated Press photographer Burhan Ozbilici’s photo snapped seconds after the assassination of Russia’s ambassador to Turkey

“Photojournalism is responsible for dictating how the general public sees the rest of the world,” documentary photographer Daniella Zalcman told HuffPost. “The photos in our newspapers and magazines expose people to issues and places and individuals they’ll likely never interact with personally.”

However, much like the early days of Cartier-Bresson, Capa and co., another aspect of the photojournalism scene has persisted: The majority of our chief storytellers are also still white men, Zalcman explained.

According to The New York Times, women have consistently accounted for only 15 percent of the entries to the prestigious World Press Photo awards in the last five years. Furthermore, around 80 to 100 percent of the images contained in publications’ roundups of most significant photos in 2016 belonged to male names. Incredible (and mostly white) female figures like Margaret Bourke-White, Dorothea Lange and Inge Morath managed to overcome the stale assumptions of their time ― that women couldn’t handle the necessary equipment or fend for themselves in conflict-ridden areas. Yet their success stories can register as outliers today.

Women in the 21st century aren’t getting the most valuable assignments from wire services, newspapers or magazines, Zalcman told the Times, suggesting that gender disparities in the industry are alive and well. She cited a few obstacles contemporary women photojournalists face in particular, such as biased hiring practices, a gender-based confidence gap, the difficulties of balancing personal lives with careers, and sexual harassment in the field.

In an attempt to help women overcome these obstacles ― and educate publications unaware of the many, many female photojournalists available for hire ― Zalcman founded Women Photograph, a database promoting 400 women photojournalists from 67 countries across the globe. Described as “a resource for female* documentary and editorial photographers and the people who would like to hire them,” the site links directly to the portfolios of women from Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Cameroon, Chile, Russia, Canada and beyond. It also provides resources and grant information to aspiring photographers who might frequent the page.

(The asterisk denotes that “gender nonconforming, transgender, and genderqueer friends are all welcome” on the site.)

“We can’t just look at war and politics and human rights stories through the eyes of men,” Zalcman told HuffPost. “If we want to be responsible storytellers, our community needs to be as diverse as the voices it represents.”

Zalcman is aware that a mere list of female photojournalists won’t erase the gender-based obstacles women encounter in their line of work. But “Women Photograph” is a succinct retort to any editor who claims not to know any women in the business.

Below is a preview of some of the photojournalists on display at “Women Photograph.” To see more photojournalism from women today, head to the database here

Anna Wintour, Anya Hindmarch, Victoria Beckham Recognized in Queen’s New Year Honor’s List

ROYAL RECOGNITION: Queen Elizabeth II has released her annual New Year honor’s list, with names including Anna Wintour, Anya Hindmarch and Victoria Beckham set to receive accolades in the coming year.
Wintour, the British-born, U.S.-based editor of Vogue and Condé Nast artistic director will be named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire or DBE, for her services in the fashion and journalism industries. She joins women including Vivienne Westwood, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Zandra Rhodes and Natalie Massenet.
The DBE will be Wintour’s second honor, as she was named OBE, or Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, in 2008. The Queen’s cabinet office noted that this second, higher accolade recognizes Wintour’s ongoing contribution to the fashion industry, and her help for emerging designers.
“Anna Wintour has been a tireless advocate for established and emerging designers. In the U.K. alone, she has promoted the careers of such talents as Sarah Burton, John Galliano, Christopher Bailey, Erdem Moralioglu and Christopher Kane,” said a spokesman for the Cabinet Office, the corporate headquarters of the British government.

Victoria Beckham To Be Named in the Queen’s Honors List

ROYAL ACCOLADE: Although Queen Elizabeth’s annual New Year’s honors list is yet to be released, it appears one person is already planning her visit to Buckingham Palace.
According to the Daily Mail, Victoria Beckham will be named an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, or OBE, in the Queen’s New Year’s honors list, which is set to be released on Saturday.
According to the British tabloid, the British designer revealed the news to her family over the Christmas holiday, saying that she is “delighted and humbled for the recognition.” The honor recognizes Beckham’s contributions to the British economy and to charity.
The designer’s husband, David Beckham was handed an OBE 13 years ago for his services to British sport.
A spokesperson for Beckham did not return requests for comment.

The honor would be the culmination of a successful year for Beckham, who launched her first makeup collection in partnership with Estée Lauder last September and watched it fly off the shelves.
As reported last month, she is set to release a second cosmetics capsule collection with Lauder in the new year, as well as a skin-care line with a niche beauty partner.

Natalie Douglas Honors Judy Garland And Homeless LGBT Youth With A Performance Of ‘Stormy Weather’

Judy Garland became the consummate star of Hollywood’s golden age thanks to turns in “The Wizard of Oz” and “Meet Me in St. Louis.” Nearly 46 years after her death, she remains a icon of tenacity whose talent was offset by personal struggles that gave her performances a heartbreaking authenticity.

At 2014’s “Night of a Thousand Judys,” New York cabaret star Natalie Douglas paid appropriate tribute to the legend with a stirring rendition of “Stormy Weather.”

In this exclusive clip above, Douglas tackles the Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler classic, which Garland first performed at her storied Carnegie Hall concert in 1961.

Now in its fifth year, “Night of a Thousand Judys” — which is a special presentation of New York- and Los Angeles-based actor, writer and performer Justin Sayre’s variety show, “The Meeting,” and timed to coincide with Pride Month — will benefit the Ali Forney Center, a New York advocacy group dedicated to homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) teens and young adults.

As in previous installments, performers from Broadway, television and downtown cabaret will hit New York’s Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Center June 1 to croon songs made famous by Garland during her fabled career. The 2015 lineup includes Melissa Errico, Liz Callaway, Michael McElroy, Lauren Worsham and The Skivvies, among others.

Sayre interviewed Ali Forney Center founder Carl Siciliano for his “Sparkle & Circulate with Justin Sayre” podcast. You can check that out here.

Meanwhile, you can also view some previous performances from “The Meeting” on Sayre’s official YouTube page. For more Sayre, head to Facebook and Twitter, too.

Accessories Council Honors FIT Accessory, Jewelry Programs

Class council: On Monday evening, members of the Accessories Council gathered to honor the Fashion Institute of Technology’s accessory and jewelry programs with a Hall of Fame Award. On hand to accept the distinction was FIT president Dr. Joyce Brown, who said that the evening was “a very important honor for the college.”
“The accessories program and our jewelry program have made great strides in recent years,” she said. “We have extremely talented students and the support of the Accessories Council is a real badge of recognition and support.
“It’s very important that the student’s work is recognized; They work very, very hard and they are very talented. It’s very hard to get in to any of the programs, so if we are able to give them scholarships and support to help them get placed in the industry I think it’s a win for everyone.”
Brown also noted that the two programs have recently revamped their curriculums and that the school is currently in the process of building out new laboratory and design facilities for its majors with the Accessories Council’s help.

2014 Foreign Language Film Symposium Honors International Filmmakers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Golden Globe Awards are put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — a group of journalists who cover movies for international publications — so it’s fitting to pay special tribute to international filmmakers.

The HFPA did that Saturday at its 11th annual Foreign Language Film Symposium, which drew the directors of four of the five foreign-language films nominated at Sunday’s Golden Globes. Abdellatif Kechiche of France (“Blue is the Warmest Color”), Thomas Vinterberg of Denmark (“The Hunt”), Paolo Sorrentino of Italy (“The Great Beauty”) and Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi of Iran (“The Past”) discussed their work with each other and an audience of fans at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre.

Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, whose film “The Wind Rises” is also up for a Globe, wasn’t able to attend.

Apart from Vinterberg, who also works in English, each director was accompanied by an interpreter. All said that despite working in disparate languages, film transcends any such obstacles.

“Film is beyond all spoken language,” Vinterberg said. “The more local I get in my writing, the farther my film reaches.”

His nominated film, “The Hunt,” stars Mads Mikkelsen as a lonely teacher whose life is upended by an innocent lie.

“Blue is the Warmest Color” is a coming-of-age love story. “The Great Beauty” explores the indulgence of lavish nightlife. “The Past” deals with family relationships. “The Wind Rises” is about a dreamer who designed fighter planes in World War II.

Trailers for all five films up for the Golden Globe for best foreign-language film were shown at the symposium, where filmmakers also took questions from fans. The winner will be announced Sunday at the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards.
