Lady Gaga Shares Message Before Grammys About Transforming ‘Grief’ That Inspired Joanne Into ‘Hope’

Just hours before the 2018 Grammy Awards, Lady Gaga shared a touching message about the late aunt who inspired her latest album Joanne.

“I have carried a deep grief in my heart over my family’s tragedy,” she wrote on social media, referring to her late aunt, Joanne Stefani Germanotta, who died of lupus complications at age 19.

“The loss of Joanne affected my father so deeply that it affected me. When he cried, I cried. When he was angry, I was angry. When he was hurt, I hurt,” she continued.

She added, “Today I transform this grief to hope and healing. After 10 years with you I still get nervous before the Grammys, but I know I have an angel with me.”

The 31-year-old songstress also shared the heartfelt message alongside a picture of “me and @MarcRonson writing #Joanne.”

“I love you little monsters,” she added.

Be sure to check out PEOPLE’s full Grammys coverage to get the latest news on music’s big night.

In addition to performing at the Grammys this year, Gaga has been nominated for best pop solo performance (“Million Reasons”) and best pop vocal album (Joanne).

The singer had previously shared how “honored” she felt to be performing from her deeply personal album at the award show.

“I’m so honored to be singing from #Joanne,” she wrote on Saturday, adding, “This album and moment with little monsters means so much to me.”

Though the pop star was born nearly 12 years after Joanne’s death, she remains one of Gaga’s biggest influences.

“When Mark and I wrote it, the decision to name the album that was in tribute to my father’s sister who died when she was 19,” she told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe of her poet/painter aunt in September 2016, one month before her album’s release.

She went on to reveal that the album encompassed “everything about Joanne, which also happens to be my middle name.”

“It’s all the toughness of the pain of losing her that made us all strong and made us who we are,” Gaga added. “She is the woman of my past who is becoming and helping me bring more of my honest woman self into the future.”

On Saturday, the 31-year-old was also spotted stepping out hand-in-hand with  boyfriend Christian Carino as they made their way to Marta Italian Restaurant in New York City following Grammys rehearsals on Saturday.

PEOPLE confirmed Gaga and Carino’s romance in February 2017, weeks after the budding couple was spotted getting affectionate at a Kings of Leon concert and cuddling on the Super Bowl LI field.

The 60th annual Grammy Awards, hosted by James Corden, are broadcast live from Madison Square Garden in New York City on CBS starting at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.

It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

SPECIAL TIP UPDATE!

Before He Disappeared, Richard Simmons Was A Beacon Of Hope To Thousands Of Fans

Upon hearing the name “Richard Simmons,” you’re likely reminded of a handful of things: the hair, the outfits, the dancing.

Yet none of these associations ― these bits of iconography connected to Simmons and his exercise legacy ― speak to the multifaceted and goodhearted person Simmons truly is.

Dan Taberski’s podcast, Missing Richard Simmons, is attempting to change that.

“Missing Richard Simmons” launched earlier this month, asking viewers a simple question: What happened to Richard Simmons? The exercise sensation has seemingly fallen off the face of the earth in the last few years, abandoning his workout classes, devotees and, most unfortunately, his friends. The public intrigue behind this question, percolating for the past three years, has driven the podcast to the top of iTunes’ charts.

Taberski, as he explains in the podcast, was friendly with Simmons ― he regularly attended his Los Angeles classes and has, on occasion, visited Simmons’ home. After a bit of digging, Taberski found that potentially thousands of others had established similar relationships.

In short, Simmons was this bubbly, friendly guy who would prolong going to the hospital for an injury just to take a photo with a fan. He’d make daily calls to someone he’d met one time, who lived across the country, just to check in on them. He’d drive elderly fans to classes when they couldn’t make the trip at night.

So, how does someone who gives the world so much goodness decide to make a complete 180 and disappear? I talked to Taberski on the phone about his endeavor to find Simmons and what drove him to embark on this podcast.

“I think there’s a lot of answers to that,” Taberski explained. “I am extremely worried. I am concerned. I do think something’s going on. I don’t know what it is. I don’t mean to get grim here ― I’m hoping everything’s great. I’m hoping at the end of this process Richard and I reconnect and get to talk and he gets to go live the life he wants. I hope the hundreds of people who loved him and are his friends and don’t understand what’s going on, that they get an answer too. I hope that’s what happens.”

He took a pause before elaborating further.

“There are countless stories of celebrities who just want to be left alone,” he added, “and people have thought there’s something wrong [when there’s not]. But then there are others where you hear about the horrible ending that they’ve had. I’m not saying that’s what’s going to happen to him … He’s not just retired. He’s not just taking time off. He’s not still working behind the scenes to continue the work he’s been doing for the past 40 years. That’s all been abandoned and [his management and publicist] are not acknowledging that. There’s something scary about this that I think is worth pursuing.”

The thing about Simmons that Taberski kept coming back to in our discussion was his empathy. Simmons had seemingly boundless amounts of it. According to Taberski, Simmons would wake up at 4 a.m., spending his morning calling up to 50 people a day who “were isolated, alone and lived in the middle of nowhere.” They might have been experiencing problems with their weight, health, self-esteem or levels of happiness. Simmons would listen to their stories and “give to them just empathy ― for free!”

“He did that for a decade,” Taberski said. “He helped thousands, if not tens of thousands, of people with that empathy.”

One can imagine how much effort it takes to be present for so many individuals; how much energy it must take to forge those bonds. In light of this, I asked Taberski if he felt that Richard owed us (the podcast listeners, his friends, etc.) his presence now.

“We’re not owed anything. Straight up,” Taberski replied. “Richard Simmons owes us nothing … I have a feeling that Richard Simmons is isolated and alone and needs some empathy. I think, and how I see this project, this is a chance for us to return that favor. Sometimes, that requires being a little pushy, but sometimes the best friends are the pushy ones. It comes from love. And I hope he sees it that way.”

Taberski explained that Simmons’ intense relationships with people are what help make the podcast so much deeper than just finding out what he’s been up to.

“This isn’t just Richard Simmons’ story,” he said. “This isn’t a story about a celebrity and the fans who miss him. This is also about people who know him and miss him. This is their story, too.”

Taberski said that just as Simmons gave so much to these people, they gave something to him in return. And the general concern for Richard is one that stems from “sheer love, respect and confusion.”

“There’s not a vindictiveness, no one’s like, ‘That asshole!’ It comes from a complicated place, but it comes from a place where people really feel for him and want him to be OK,” Taberski said. “I just want to understand. I feel like what I’m doing is what I hope I’d do for any friend. If they’re doing something weird, you push it a little bit to make sure they’re OK. I envy his ability to connect with people … I really think he’s a superhero in that sense. It astounds me how giving he is to other beings.”

According to Taberski, the podcast is currently planning to roll out only six episodes, despite his ability to talk about Simmons “until he turns blue.” And he wants everyone to know that his plea to Simmons at the end of each episode to reach out and get in touch with him is genuine.

“There’s no secret like, ‘We know how it ends!’ and we’re just playing coy. This is an open investigation. And ‘investigation’ sounds so serious. But this is an open-ended project,” he said. “I want this to create enough of a ripple that it moves Richard to respond. Just a phone call or something. I’m trying to get his attention. That’s the end goal right now. We don’t know how it ends.”

When I asked Taberski if he’s hoping for a Richard Simmons renaissance at the end of all of this, he said that no, he wasn’t. Instead, he’s hoping for Richard to find peace.

“I don’t feel like [Richard] has it now,” he concluded. “I don’t feel like anyone who knows him has it now. It’s a sinking feeling that I’m just not quite willing to put aside yet.”

Facing A Mixed Orientation Marriage With Gratitude And Hope

Many little girls, often daydream of walking down the aisle, on the most joyous day of their life – their wedding day. Heart racing, nervous smile plastered across her glowing face, never once thinking that the man she’s walking towards is hiding a secret that he’s too afraid to share.

Many young men envision meeting their soulmate, sharing their life with the person of their dreams, having a family, and living the life that’s expected of them – married to a beautiful woman and being a supportive husband and father. Yet some men are torn apart inside by the secret they keep that leads to heart wrenching guilt, shame, and fear of failing everyone they know.

Regardless of the scenario, whether it’s a man or a woman hiding their secret, at some point, the pain of pretending to be someone they’re not becomes greater than the transparent truth of living and being who they’re meant to be.

In that moment, all the years of love, parenting, and life building are diminished to a rubble of memories. Tortured wails of “How could you do this to me?” by an unsuspecting spouse, are just the tip of the betrayal iceberg that sinks the life once known by all concerned.

On the other hand, many couples in a mixed orientation marriage bravely join forces, standing tall in love, vowing to get support for overcoming the wicked temptation of same-sex attraction. Prayer, therapy, retreats, hard work, and tear-stained conversations litter the landscape of a marriage in defense mode, all in the name of “make it work, just make it work!” However, even the most resolute attempts to stay afloat in the life ring of “Until death do us part,” find many couples surrendering to the truth that fixing the same-sex attraction, or fixing it enough, as Matt the husband your about to meet said in his TEDx talk, isn’t going to happen. To quell the truth of a spouse embittered in their own internal tug of war with who they are vs. who the rest of the world expects them to be, is practically a death sentence in and of itself.

While both in-the-know spouses may give a mixed orientation marriage a fair shake, many are faced with the harsh reality, that denying the truth of the same-sex attraction only leads to deeper levels of guilt, shame, anxiety, depression, and more often than not ugly embittered relationships that lead to divorce. Matt and Luanne Nightingale are trying to walk the road less traveled, one of gratitude and hope, for unraveling their 25-year relationship.

Granted, it’s a common, and a completely acceptable, rationale human emotion to want to lash out, be angry, and desire the betrayer, pay, pay, pay for the lies they’ve laden into a 23-year marriage, that never really was the storybook version of the storybook marriage they thought they were living. However, by changing perspectives a little and dramatic shifts of thought, one begins to see the beauty of diversity, if one chooses to do so.

Even though the wounds are still freshly cut, and like many heterosexual spouses, Luanne is getting the raw end of the deal (a justifiable feeling that most heterosexual spouses feel) by having her little girl dreams of happily ever after shattered, the question remains, “Why me, why now, why to begin with?” As understanding, compassionate, and loving as she can be, it doesn’t take away the gut wrenching blow to the heart, self-esteem, and trust that Luann built in her marriage to the man that she loved.

When faced with the harsh truth, Luann and Matt faced eerily similar circumstances and questions that thousands of other same sex couples caught in this mixed-orientation marriage turmoil have faced. Heart-wrenching questions like, “Do we try to make this work?” or “How do we undo the damage, un-tell the lies?” and the ever so popular, “What does the future hold for either of us, our kids, our family?” Yet, they found a path.

Through open, honest, transparent communication, Matt and Luanne have chosen to accept the truth of Matt’s same-sex attraction – him a little more easily, her a little more painfully. Leaning into their relationship built on love, respect, support and brutal honesty, they’re now, in their own words, “Trying to do this well.” The “This well” being, creating an environment for themselves and their children where the family thrives rather than survives as their marriage unravels – she as a single, pained and saddened heterosexual mother, he as a single, excited yet sorrowful, gay father.

While brutal honesty and truth often slice deep into the jugular of life, transparency for being known for who you are is a blessing that eradicates guilt, shame, and self-loathing, opening one’s self, and hopefully others to the light of living truth for truths sake. In the light of Matt’s truth, his real truth, he and Luanne are building a new foundation that embraces the reality that who you are is who you are even though at times it hurts and brings up anger and confusion. However, both Matt and Luann have found that any attempt to fight your truth only compounds the darkness, hurt and pain which in turn, eventually manifests as a person living a pretend life having pretend relationships.

On Saturday, November 6, 2016 Matt and Luanne bravely, both in their own unique way, took the stage at TEDx Sonoma County to share their story, their journey, and their truth – a truth that demonstrates with respect, support, honesty, and a deep dive into forgiveness and understanding that both of them are trying to navigate the waters of unraveling a marriage of deception and lies, with dignity and love.

Selecting gratitude and hope as their guideposts, Matt and Luanne’s TEDx talk demonstrates their ability to find common ground in what could easily be a chaotic war of love gone wrong. Yes. This is their path of choice, but it does beg the question, “What’s possible when gratitude and hope are chosen over bitterness and you done me wrong thoughts?”

Robert L. Lynch Speaks of Hope, Unity, and Resilience at the End of This Presidential Election

I congratulate President-Elect Donald Trump and all of the national, state, and local elected leaders across the country who won their elections last night. I also thank Secretary Hillary Clinton for her hard-fought campaign, along with all the candidates who did not win but participated in our great democracy by running for elected office.

The historic election of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States brings some uncertainty in terms of federal support for the arts. President-Elect Trump, in answering questions co-developed by Americans for the Arts during the course of the campaign, deferred to Congress on supporting increased federal funding of the National Endowment for the Arts and other federal funding for culture in general. He also deferred to state and local school districts on maintaining or increasing support for arts education funding. While he does express appreciation for arts education and the arts in his own life, specific policy positions are unknown or undeveloped.

We do know that the President-Elect is very interested in growing the U.S. economy and improving international trade deals. Arts and cultural industries contribute 4.23 percent, or $ 704.2 billion, of the nation’s GDP. The value added by arts and culture to the U.S. GDP is greater than that of several other sectors, including the construction industry, transportation and warehousing, mining and extraction, utilities, and agriculture. In contrast to U.S. goods and services as a whole, arts and cultural commodities are yielding a trade surplus–of $ 24 billion. The arts and cultural sector supports 4.7 million jobs, with more than 2.2 million people in the U.S. whose primary occupation is as an artist.

Americans for the Arts, with the support of hundreds of thousands of grassroots arts advocates in every state, will reach out to the Trump transition team and administration to share these economic numbers on the arts and culture. We will work hard to advance pro-arts policies and strengthen our efforts to transform communities through the arts. It is more important than ever that we use the arts to help the economy, our communities, families and children, and our nation to seek hope, opportunity, and ultimately to come together.

President-Elect Trump has said, “…supporting and advocating for appreciation of the arts is important to an informed and aware society. As President, I would take on that role.” We hope for a White House and administration that supports the nonprofit arts community, the local and state arts support infrastructures, as well as independent artists and creative entrepreneurs. Arts policy recommendations that the Americans for the Arts Action Fund has put forward and will continue to fight for include:

• Increasing federal funding for the arts to $ 1.00 per capita (an increase from 46 cents per capita);

• Fully funding and implementing the “well-rounded education” provisions within the Every Student Succeeds Act by strengthening equitable access to learning in the arts;

• Preserving or expanding charitable tax deduction incentives for giving to nonprofit arts and culture charities; and

• Establishing a cabinet-level position for the arts and culture to advise President-Elect Trump on matters such as how the arts impact the economy, diplomacy, education, and the overall well-being of citizens and the nation at large.

As the 115th Congress is sworn in this January, it is also possible that we will see more conservative and bold policies emerge with a single party controlling the House, Senate, and White House. Complex challenges may be ahead that will impact funding decisions and policy priorities, including a possible tax reform overhaul that hasn’t happened since 1986 that could impact charitable giving for nonprofit organizations. However, we look to our bipartisan congressional partners, like the long-standing Congressional Arts Caucus, the Congressional STEAM Caucus, along with new Senate Cultural Caucus leadership with the retirement of Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), to grow their ranks and press for supporting arts and culture in America. Together with all of America’s pro-arts elected officials and continued grassroots advocacy, we look forward to continuing to build upon legislative successes when the next session of Congress begins in 2017.

Further, last night, pro-arts results came in from a number of ballot initiatives at the state- and local-level. For instance, in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Denver, Douglas, and Jefferson Counties in Colorado, a ballot initiative–Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD)–dedicates one-tenth of a 1 percent sales and use tax to cultural facilities throughout the seven-county Denver, Colorado metropolitan area. Voters overwhelmingly supported extending this through 2030, which currently generates about $ 55 million a year. The SCFD was first authorized in 1988 and has since been reauthorized twice in 1994 and 2004, respectively. It is local efforts like these that can make real impact in communities all across America. Several arts education funding referendums were also overwhelmingly passed last night by voters in Pinellas County, Florida and Tucson/Pima County, Arizona.

Americans for the Arts will continue to recognize and advance support for the arts and arts education among the nation’s bipartisan state legislators, county officials, mayors, lieutenant governors and governors through a robust set of partnerships that promote leadership in the arts each year.

It’s also important that those of us in the nonprofit arts sector remember the great strength and resiliency that binds us together. For more than 60 years Americans for the Arts has worked with the infrastructures and governments of our communities to make people’s lives better. And of course the arts have helped our communities in different ways for thousands of years before that.

As President-Elect Trump’s administration takes shape, we will remain engaged to ensure that he and his transition team hear from arts leaders, community leaders, and activists and keep the arts central to the many pressing needs of the country. We will unite and strengthen our efforts to show that the arts represent the best of humanity, and urge President-Elect Trump’s administration to advance pro-arts policies that will impact our society, communities, and generations to come.

Haunting Photos Show The Real New Orleans, Through Hope And Despair

David Spielman’s New Orleans is solemn and still, a place where cat’s claw vines creep up walls and consume entire houses. A staircase leads to an empty lot where a building once stood; a piano sits outside on a sunny day, unplayed and sharing space with a pile of tires. The photographer captures scenes from around the city, and the lingering effects of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation are everywhere.

“I wanted to create a sense of what it was like and how it impacted everybody,” said Spielman, whose photographs are collected in the book The Katrina Decade: Images of an Altered Citywhich was released this summer. Some of the images are currently on display in an accompanying exhibition at the Historic New Orleans Collection.

Spielman set out to capture the overlooked areas of the city.

“One of the things that I think is very, very important, is, sadly, the media has kind of construed Katrina’s primary damage to the Lower 9th Ward,” he told The Huffington Post. “They fail to fully capture the fact that over 80 percent of the city of New Orleans was flooded.”

“Hopefully,” he added, “people will start to realize that Katrina was an equal and ecumenical destruction.”

The 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina won’t mark the end of Spielman’s efforts to depict a long and wide-ranging view of a changing New Orleans. He has been photographing his city for four decades and says he plans to continue “until the day before I die.”

“The event was the hurricane. The story was the aftermath,” Spielman said.

A few of Spielman’s photographs depict people, but his focus is mostly on the city’s architecture and “the battle between nature and the destruction.”

“Although there are no people in the pictures, you know when you look at those houses covered in vines, that was somebody’s home,” he said. “So when you think about these houses that have been around for well over 100 years, you think of the generations of people.”

The collection of black and white images (shot on film, with a Leica camera) is ambiguous, evading easy description. That’s partially intentional for Spielman, who contrasts his quiet scenes with some of the more dramatic portrayals of New Orleans after the storm hit.

In his book, Spielman quotes the photographer Robert Frank, one of his major influences. He recited the quote from memory in our phone interview: “Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.”

Through the rich and numerous shades of gray in his photographs, Spielman captures a blend of that hope and despair: The storm has passed, but left an indelible mark on New Orleans.

Kendrick Lamar To Geraldo Rivera: ‘How Can You Take A Song That’s About Hope And Turn It Into Hatred?’

Kendrick Lamar’s opening performance of his new single “Alright” at this year’s annual BET Awards sparked some debate over at Fox News last week.

During a June 29 episode of Fox News’ “The Five” co-hosts Kimberly Guilfoyle, Dana Perino, Eric Bolling, and Fox News contributor Geraldo Rivera took aim at Lamar’s performance, saying that the song’s lyrics are “not helpful at all” in improving police relations in the black community.

Rivera stated:

“This is why I say that hip-hop has done more damage to young African-Americans than racism in recent years. This is exactly the wrong message. And then to conflate what happened in the church in Charleston, South Carolina with the tragic incidents involving excessive use of force by cops is to equate that racist killer with these cops. It’s so wrong. It’s so counterproductive. It gives exactly the wrong message.”

Rivera’s claim that Lamar “conflates” police violence and the June 17 massacre of nine black Americans by a white gunman misrepresents “Alright,” which appears on Lamar’s sophomore album “To Pimp A Butterfly” released in March. Following Rivera’s comments, Lamar responded during an interview with TMZ Live in which he clarified the song’s message.

“How can you take a song that’s about hope and turn it into hatred?” he said. “The message, the overall message [of ’Alright’], is, ’We gon’ be alright.’ It’s not a message of ‘I want to kill people.’”

After asked by TMZ Live host, Harvey Levin if the symbol of Lamar performing on top of a vandalized cop car validates Rivera’s claim of “sending the wrong message,” Lamar said the problem has more to do with the reality of the police killings and than his BET Awards performance.

“I think his attempt is really diluting the real problem, which is the senseless acts of killings of these young boys out here. And I think for the most part, it’s avoiding the truth,” the Grammy Award-winner said. “This is reality. This is my world. This is what I talk about in my music. You can’t dilute that.”

kendrick lamar reality
Lamar went on to explain how he hopes to influence change among young people through his music.

“Hip-hop is not the problem. Our reality is the problem of the situation…This is our music. This is us expressing ourselves. Rather [than] going out here and doing the murders myself, I want to express myself in a positive light the same way other artists are doing. Not going out in the streets, go in the booth and talking about the situation and hoping these kids can find some type of influence on it in a positive manner.”

Comedian Jim Breuer’s Father’s Day Message of Hope and Healing

“If we don’t find the funny, there’s not too many other ways of healing.”

— Jim Breuer

Jim Breuer knows funny. The comedian who was named by Comedy Central as one of the greatest standup comedians of all time has been entertaining us since his days on “Saturday Night Live” to his recent Epix special, “Jim Breuer: Comedy Frenzy.” But it was his movie “More Than Me,” a documentary of Breuer’s experience taking his elderly and sick father on his comedy tour, which was perhaps one of the pinnacles of his career.

At the end of the movie, Breuer tearfully contemplates losing his father. Breuer’s father died of cancer in August 2014, making this Breuer’s first Father’s Day without his father. And Breuer is sharing a simple but powerful message that he learned from, and with, his dad:

You don’t have to hide from life’s uncomfortable truths — sickness, death, fear — you can look them in the eye, laugh and move on.

Breuer described how his relationship with his dad changed over time. “Well, with my dad, he was a solid-rock man. For me, fearless. I’m going to assume that came from his World War II days. And really quiet. We never had big talks. They were always short conversations,” he explained. “But every pivotal move in my life, he gave the perfect man, fatherly advice. Leaving school, chasing my career, to getting married — everything. One little line here, one little line there. He was so big and powerful.”

But as time went on, Breuer’s dad became older and struggled with his health. The comedian was taken aback as his father appeared to be aware of his own waning health. “So when he started getting old, I remember being in this kitchen, and he looked a little off, and I’m like, ‘What’s the matter, Dad?’ And he goes, ‘I think I’m coming into my last days,'” he recalled. “So, why would you say that? ‘Do you feel like you’re having a heart attack or something?’ [He said] ‘No. I’m just coming into the end of my days.'”

This was a powerful lesson for Breuer. His dad was calmly and assertively facing sickness and death. And this may be the healthiest choice. Studies suggest that far from improving well-being, suppressing or avoiding one’s experience can actually worsen mental and physical health.

And it meant that Breuer himself had to face that reality. “It was so profound. He just knew. ‘I want you to know, I’m out of here soon,'” he said. “When I heard my dad say that, he was the one thing where I was like, ‘Oh, he’s going to live forever.’ Then I went, ‘Oh, my G-d, he’s leaving.’ And I didn’t know when or what.”

It was then Breuer started to see a different side of his father. Breuer describes: “[F]or the first time, I saw him vulnerable. Never saw him vulnerable,” he explained. “And I’d get him in the shower and get over that whole ‘I’ve got to get over looking at my father naked, and clean his rear end and scrub him.’ I know he’s embarrassed. He’s not going to say he’s embarrassed. But I can tell by his face he’s embarrassed. He’d be completely humiliated.”

So Breuer took the lesson from his dad and explored how to make the best of a terrible situation. The comic started by remembering how what his dad had done for him. “And then as he started deteriorating, I just remembered all the little things he’d do for me to keep me going. And they were so little. But they were huge,” he recalled. “And so when he started going down, it’s those moments when you look at what’s really important. I’m going to start lifting him up.”

And so Breuer turned to what he knew best — humor. This was a wise choice; not only because of his chosen profession, but also because of the evidence that humor can improve many aspects of functioning from mood, to immune functioning to learning.

“[W]e’re going to laugh about it. I’m going to drive him nuts. I’m going to do what I do best. I’m going to drive you nuts. … I would laugh so hard, busting his chops,” Breuer said. “And he loved George Carlin. That would be the only thing that would make him belly-laugh. It’s just something you take on. And I did everything in my power, and I think I succeeded to make that the best I could. We laughed. We’d make it a project. We’d laugh about it. It sucked at first. But then I’d overcome it.”

And it was a two-way street. “As much as I’d bust his chops, he’d bust mine in different ways. He knew I’d get mortified when I’d say certain things in public. He got off on that,” Breuer recounted. .”The laughing was always the healer.”

For Breuer, the laughing was not an attempt to avoid the truth, but rather what made it easier to embrace truth. “Sometimes, people don’t want to acknowledge the raw truth. Sometimes the truth is dark and ugly and hurts,” he explained. “And that goes with death and everything else. And sometimes it’s not pretty. Some of it’s just plain evil.”

And there’s one raw truth that Breuer found he was able to accept over time.

“Men like that don’t say ‘I love you so much.’ They say, ‘I did the oil in your car.’ That means, ‘G-d damn. I love you.'”

‘There’s $ 20 on your bed means ‘G-d damn. I love you.’ That’s their way.”

“And that’s up to you to figure out what that means.”

A Seed of Hope

The world we live in appears so full of upheaval and uncertainty. Turn on the news, pick up a newspaper, and each day seems to bring new revelations of chaos and of man’s simple inhumanity to man.

Who can really be blamed for sometimes thinking that the world itself is going – to use that dangerously unfashionable word – quite mad?

We live, as the Chinese curse goes, in truly interesting times.

With such an atmosphere of uneasiness, a zeitgeist of misgiving and mistrust, where those values we learned to hold dear are being challenged on so many different fronts, it is easy to loose hope, to experience feelings of despondency.

But there is always a reason to hope. Always.

As I child I heard the story of the tiny seed scattered on the ground and seemingly stuck there. Uncaring feet trample on it, driving it down into the dirt, the cold and the wet.

In spite of all this it does what it can. What it must. Its roots reach down into the darkness where nourishment somehow lies. And the smallest of shoots strive tentatively upwards towards the warmth of the sun.

It does not give up and it does not give in. Despite the wind and the rain it continues to grow until it transforms into the tree that stands the test of time, anchored in itself and in the good earth.

If you are feeling down, discouraged, or hopeless, remember that little seed. Resourceful and resilient though it is, you are even more so.

Remember that regardless of what is happening in the world, or in your life, there is always a reason to hope. Find that seed within yourself and you and life will be all right.

‘Hope is being able to see that there is light, despite all of the darkness.’
— Desmond Tutu

The 7 Killers of Hope

Why Hope Doesn’t Float

  1. If you have no gratitude, you’re disappointed
  2. If you have no confidence, you’re doubtful
  3. If you have no faith, you’re pessimistic
  4. If you have no belief, you’re skeptical
  5. If you have no trust, you’re cynical
  6. If you have no respect, you’re disdainful
  7. If you have no forgiveness, you’re bitter

And if you’re disappointed, doubtful, pessimistic, skeptical, cynical, disdainful and bitter, you have no hope… and then you are hopeless.

Inspired by Thad’s self-supporting and hope engendering community where the God they believe in is all inclusive, all forgiving, all loving and even loves evil doers, because occasionally even some of those will see the light.

Losing Dad, Paranoid Schizophrenia: A Family’s Search for Hope

Losing Dad, Paranoid Schizophrenia: A Family’s Search for Hope

Losing Dad, Paranoid Schizophrenia: a Family’s Search for Hope,” is the compelling true story of a family grappling with the stranglehold of severe mental illness. The ordeal began innocently enough. “Joseph” was happily raising a middle class family in the California suburbs when he was diagnosed with cancer. The operation was successful and prognosis good until a routine follow-up procedure was botched. Doctors corrected the issue and sent “Joseph” home from the hospital, but he was never the same again. At age 53, Joseph suddenly became prone to fits of rage and hallucinations. His new and disturbing religious obsessions and proselytizing alienated his grown children and got him fired from his job, while his wife began to fear for her life. Depression, anxiety, and paranoia overtook this once-vibrant man. Frequent hospital stints and a persistent refusal to stay on medication ultimately led him to flee his home and travel the world homeless as a self-proclaimed religious prophet, eschewing wealth, belongings and family. Joseph’s colorful descent into psychosis featured a journey that stretched across thirty countries, four continents, and thirteen wives. He faced down drug dealers and prostitutes, advised the Italian Mafioso and was hailed as a prophet in Africa. Losing Dad not only features Joseph’s harrowing – and still ongoing – flight from reality amidst anosognosia, but also valuable information about severe mental illness, a crippling disease that affects 1 in 17 people and can develop inside any mind at any time. It provides a list of resources, a discussion of current mental health laws, and plenty of food for thought. The Foreword is written by Dr. Xavier Amador. “I highly recommend ‘Losing Dad’ both as an educational tool and as a heartfelt tale. Beautifully woven between the facts are the feelings. Amanda LaPera] shows that behind every severe mental illness there is a human being.” – Xavier Amador, Ph.D, Founder, LEAP Institute Author, I am Not

‘Where Hope Grows’: A Review

As the parent of a child with Down syndrome, when you hear about a movie where one of the main characters is a young man with Down syndrome, you get excited to watch that movie. Where Hope Grows tells the story of two men: one afraid to embrace his lot in life and do something with himself, while the other has a dream and is working hard to chase it.

2015-05-11-1431355188-1368080-WHG.jpg

Calvin Campbell (Kristoffer Polaha) is a former Major League Baseball player who is struggling with alcoholism and low self-worth while raising a rebellious teenage daughter. While in the grocery store to restock his liquor supply, Calvin meets “Produce” (David DeSanctis), a young man with Down syndrome and an infectiously positive attitude. An unexpected friendship takes root in the produce section.

Both men see something in each other that they need: Hope. When a tragedy strikes, their lives are forever bound together.

The International Down Syndrome Coalition staff had the privilege of a private screening of Where Hope Grows. Staff members were impressed and moved by the film.

IDSC Executive Director Michelle Slape said, “This movie tugged at the heartstrings and I was rooting for ‘Produce’ the whole time.”

IDSC Secretary Leslie Sieleni said the movie covers, “Real, hard subjects brought to the forefront like alcoholism and bullying. Tough to watch, but even harder to live.”

Several on the IDSC staff noted their expectations going into the movie were little more than hoping to watch a sweet movie starring an individual with Down syndrome — but were unprepared for the strong message, excellent acting and moving moments.

“If you go into this movie expecting little more than a quaint movie that gives a part to someone with Down syndrome, you will have greatly underestimated this movie,” noted IDSC Chairman Beth Sullivan. “The movie runs much deeper. It’s about love, forgiveness… and making your life count.”

This inspiring movie shatters stereotypes of those with Down syndrome and illustrates the power of friendship, love… and hope.

A story that is real and honest with an ending that you didn’t see coming, Where Hope Grows is a movie you will want to see. Be sure to find it at your local movie theater when it opens on May 15!

Independent Spirit Award Nominee Andrea Suarez Paz: “I Hope to Play Something Impossible”

2014-12-22-AndreaBWNEW.png
Actress Andrea Suarez Paz. Pic: Andrea Suarez Paz

Currently, up-and-coming actress Andrea Suarez Paz takes on the role of an immigrant mother in New York City, whose autistic son, marvelously depicted by Jesus Sanchez-Velez, wonders off into the baffling depths of the city’s subway system — a means of transportation that in so many ways resembles the complexities this metropolis throws at her patient residents. The New York Times calls Sam Fleischner’s tranquil account Stand Clear of The Closing Doors, a “small miracle of a film.” Suarez Paz was recently nominated for the much-sought after Independent Spirit Award for best supporting female, alongside Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone, Patricia Arquette and Carmen Ejogo. In an interview she reveals passions and insights.

What was your first reaction to the nomination for the Independent Spirit Award and how are you feeling now?

I was shocked and ecstatic! I found out about a minute before my four year old son got off the school bus, and it was hilarious trying to explain to him why I was jumping up and down. I now feel a really luxurious sense of relief that my work actually translated, that it was felt by the audience.

While acting, you have a very strong presence, on stage as well as now in your first feature. Where is that place of strength within yourself you seem to draw from?

Actually, I always try to remain conscious of the tools I have at hand: breath, body, voice — and I just incorporate them as I perform a particular story, or lines. I strive to be purely honest and I think there’s a lot of power that comes with that.

Why did you come to New York City to pursue this career? Had you also considered alternative places, as well?

I am really bad at alternatives. I get confused picturing all kinds of different scenarios. So I decided on New York City, because I was young and I fell for the mystique of Scorsese and De Niro, acting conservatories, the grime, the subway and the streets of New York. I was feeling empowered when I made the decision to make a radical change and move to New York City, without having any money or knowing anybody out here. That was over ten years ago and these have been some of the hardest, most grueling years of my life.

What drew you to your part in “Stand Clear of the Closing Doors”?

Everything. It was a movie about being lost in New York City. The child is lost, the mother is lost and the vastness of the city is the backdrop of their drifting. You see the subway and the beach and they are both limbs of the same monster and it just made me wonder, what the hell is this merciless, amazing universe of a city? Where you are afraid to be found, even if nobody sees you? What would it be like for me to lose my precious child and to have to keep my cool, because my only chance of ever touching him again, relied in me not being deported? Not calling attention? Parts like these are an actor’s blessing!

How was working with director Sam Fleischner and what particular qualities does a good director have, in your opinion?

I think the quality I identify with the most when it comes to working in a team, is flexibility. In my opinion, a great director has a nice balance of a well set vision and the willingness to have that vision molded and changed by circumstances, the environment, other people’s input, etc. Sam actually taught me that. He made me realize how nurturing an attitude of flexibility is and how expanding. This also permeates into every cell of the process.

Who would you like to work with next and what type of character would you like to play?

It’s hard to say. I hope to be able to play something really multilayered, something impossible, that’s what I always wish for.

What part of the experiences as a mother in real life were you able to integrate in your part?

Well, I am a relatively new mom, but I remember when Sam and I started talking about the character and how he wanted to keep her very naturalistic and internal and sort of calculating. I thought, “Sure! That sounds very interesting, no problem,” and my son was about 9 months at the time. Then the film was postponed for a year for a few reasons and I was kind of bummed and he said to me that this time would be important, because I would have more experience as a mother. I thought, “a mother is a mother.” I didn’t think there’d be much difference. The months passed and I had been thinking about my character and how I would want to do things, considering she had to act so thoughtfully, so not from her gut, because she has so much at stake and she wants and has to keep it all together and I was having fun just making random cerebral choices here and there. In the meantime, my son had gotten better at walking, and one day while shopping at the supermarket, I suddenly lost him. Immediately my mouth went dry and my heart started pounding in my throat. It was a matter of seconds before I was screaming his name down the aisles and saying, “Please help, lock the doors, call the manager,” to other customers. I found him smelling coffee a few yards and I thought, “Oh, keeping it in is going to be harder than I thought.” Subsequently, I used that a lot, that having to quiet myself down, because that was my only option and what worked best, in order to find my son.

What type of preparation do you undertake to get into character?

I usually read the script many times and make many notes and then I spend my time ridding those notes of what comes from my own opinion rather than the character’s according to the story. That’s the hardest part, usually, letting go of my judgment. I try to work hard on staying true to the story and away from “what I would do.” It’s not what I would do it’s what this person is actually doing. That helps me free myself up.

In the film, your son Ricky is suffering from autism. What did you know about Asperger’s/autism beforehand?

I knew nothing about Autism or Asperger’s when I started the process. I read a lot of books in the subject, all varying widely in information. Nobody really knows what Autism is exactly or what to do about it in order to get the best outcomes as the child grows. I learned that no two brains are alike, autistic or otherwise, so in my research I found all kinds of stories and realized that even though every parent’s journey is different and personal, there is that common ground of not knowing how your child will develop. That is very stressful and it can, and usually does completely take over your life.

How do you feel are Latin American/Hispanic actresses represented in Hollywood these days? What are the perks, what are the obstacles?

I see mostly a lot of typecasting but I also see a lot of change happening and a lot of opportunity being shaped up. There are actresses doing a fine job of the sexy Latina stereotype and stuff like that but there are also women willing to push those boundaries and present the wider spectrum of what a Hispanic woman is, or are simply saying, “I am a woman with life experiences, I’ve lived a life that involves everything,” or you know, many of us are New Yorkers whether by birth or by transplant. We live in a city full of people from every corner of the world and we share the same experience of living, struggling and falling in love in the city, or whatever. I try not to see my ethnicity as an obstacle and I hope I can find empowering roles to play, just as many others like me. I think we have a good thing going and I’m willing to keep searching for those roles.

Hope in a Jar

Hope in a Jar

How did powder and paint, once scorned as immoral, become indispensable to millions of respectable women? How did a “kitchen physic,” as homemade cosmetics were once called, become a multibillion-dollar industry? And how did men finally take over that rarest of institutions, a woman’s business? In Hope in a Jar, historian Kathy Peiss gives us the first full-scale social history of America’s beauty culture, from the buttermilk and rice powder recommended by Victorian recipe books to the mass-produced products of our contemporary consumer age. She shows how women, far from being pawns and victims, used makeup to declare their freedom, identity, and sexual allure as they flocked to enter public life. And she highlights the leading role of white and black women—Helena Rubenstein and Annie Turnbo Malone, Elizabeth Arden and Madame C. J. Walker—in shaping a unique industry that relied less on advertising than on women’s customs of visiting and conversation. Replete with the voices and experiences of ordinary women, Hope in a Jar is a richly textured account of the ways women created the cosmetics industry and cosmetics created the modern woman.
