Demi Lovato Breaks Silence After Overdose and Hospitalization: ‘I Will Keep Fighting’

Demi Lovato has broken her silence for the first time following her overdose on July 24.

“I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction. What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet,” she wrote on Sunday in a message shared on her Instagram account.

“I want to thank God for keeping me alive and well,” she added, before praising her fans for standing by her through this difficult time.

“To my fans, I am forever grateful for all of your love and support throughout this past week and beyond. Your positive thoughts and prayers have helped me navigate through this difficult time,” she remarked.

Lovato’s note came one day after sources told PEOPLE that the 25-year-old “Sorry, Not Sorry” singer has agreed to enter a drug treatment center following her release from the hospital, where she has been for the past 12 days.

“Demi is well enough to leave the hospital this weekend. She has agreed to rehab and will go straight to an in-patient facility,” a source explained. “She wants to be sober. She wants to get help. She understands that it will take a lot of work and commitment to stay healthy, but this is what she wants.”

In her note, Lovato also went on to “thank my family, my team, and the staff at Cedars-Sinai who have been by my side this entire time.”

“Without them I wouldn’t be here writing this letter to all of you,” she explained.

“I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery. The love you have all shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side,” she added.

“I will keep fighting,” she continued, adding a heart emoji.

Lovato was rushed to the hospital on the morning of July 24 following the incident at her Hollywood Hills home. Her publicist released a statement that evening confirming Lovato “is awake and with her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers and support.”

“Her whole family and Wilmer are just there to support her through recovery,” a source told PEOPLE last week, describing the singer’s support system as she continued her recovery process.

“Wilmer has spent hours at the hospital with Demi every day,” a second source added. “He seems very concerned about her.”

A source previously told PEOPLE the 38-year-old actor, who dated the singer for six years before their split in June 2016, rushed to Lovato’s side on July 25. He was also seen visiting Lovato again on July 26, when a photo of him at the hospital emerged.

Lovato has long battled addiction, mental illness and disordered eating.

The Disney Channel alum entered treatment in 2010, where she received professional assistance for bipolar disorder, bulimia, self-harm and addiction. Lovato relapsed after she left the treatment center, then entered a sober living facility for a year.

But even after treatment, insiders say she still struggled with her private pain. “Demi was never really clean and sober from all of her demons,” a Lovato source previously told PEOPLE. “She has been fighting depression and anxiety for quite some time — and is still in such a dark place. She was sober for a while, but not completely sober for six years.”

In March, Lovato revealed she celebrated six years of sobriety, but three months later, in June, she released a new song, “Sober,” in which she suggested that she had relapsed.

Sarah Hyland Excited to Get Back to the Gym After Hospitalization: ‘Strong > Skinny’

Sarah Hyland is ready to get her strength back after dealing with a health scare that landed her in the hospital.

The Modern Family star, 27, was hospitalized on June 18 for an unknown health issue, but one week later, she shared that she was cleared to get back in the gym.

“Workout before work,” Hyland wrote on her Instagram Story, telling the camera, “I’m normally shaky, but I’m even shakier from working out.”

Hyland posted in another slide that she plans to build up her muscles.

“Finally have clearance to workout,” she wrote. “Abs here I come. It’s been a while. Strong > skinny.”

Hyland revealed on Friday, for National Selfie Day, that she was forced to leave work on Monday for her hospital visit.

“Sometimes a selfie is more than just a good angle and feelin cute. This time for #nationalselfieday I’ve decided to share my truth. As painful as it is,” she wrote, alongside a picture of herself.

“So here is my face that was torn from work against my will. But I’m very grateful it was. Health should always come first,” she said, with the hashtag, “#stayhealthymyfriends.”

The actress, who was in the middle of shooting the upcoming film The Wedding Year, was able to return home on Saturday, a source told PEOPLE.

Hyland has a history of health issues, including kidney dysplasia, which required a kidney transplant in 2012. Her condition also affects her body composition, and in May 2017 she addressed the frequent skinny-shaming she hears from people on social media.

” ‘Eat a burger,’ ‘your head is bigger than your body and that’s disgusting,’ ” she quoted on Twitter. “And you’re right! … No one’s head should be bigger than their body but considering I’ve basically been on bed rest for the past few months, I’ve lost a lot of muscle mass. My circumstances have put me in a place where I’m not in control of what my body looks like. So I strive to be as healthy as possible, as everyone should.”

“I have been told that I can’t work out. Which, for me, is very upsetting,” she said. “I love to be STRONG. (I’ll be using that word a lot) Strength is everything. Being strong has gotten me where I am. Both mentally and physically. I am not a fan of ‘being skinny.’ ”

Sharon Osbourne Says Simon Cowell Is ‘Doing So Much Better’ Nearly a Week After Hospitalization

Simon Cowell is on the mend after his hospitalization.

Early Friday morning, the America’s Got Talent judge, 58, was rushed to the hospital after fainting and falling down the stairs at his London home. His rep said he couldn’t sleep and was trying to get a glass of hot milk.

Now that he’s had nearly a week to rest  — he missed the first live episodes of the current season of X Factor UK in England on Saturday and Sunday — fellow judge Sharon Osbourne said Cowell is “going to be okay.”

“He’s doing so much better,” Osbourne, 65, shared on Wednesday’s The Talk. “His partner, Lauren, came down to on both nights, so she was there flying Simon’s flag.”

“She was just saying that he suffers from low blood pressure anyway,” Osbourne said of Cowell’s partner Lauren Silverman, with whom he shares 3-year-old son Eric. “Because of the concussion, that’s why he couldn’t come back.”

Following the scary incident, Cowell admitted that the moment was a wake-up call reminding him that he needs to take better care of himself.

“I’d gone to get some hot milk because I felt ropey. On the way back upstairs, I just remember feeling really dizzy,” Cowell told The Sun.

He continued, “Next thing I know someone was putting a neck brace on me and I had a terrible headache, which must have been from me hitting the stairs. I was worried at first that I’d done some real damage.”

“Sometimes we get a reminder that we’re not invincible and this was certainly mine. It was a huge shock,” said Cowell, who returned to his London home hours after his hospitalization on Friday afternoon. “They think I fainted because I had low blood pressure and so I have got to really take good care of myself to sort that out. After all I am a dad and have more responsibility than ever.”

Cowell concluded: “I know I was very lucky I didn’t hurt myself seriously. It could have been a lot worse. I must say, everyone at the hospital were incredible. I’m truly grateful.”

Charles Manson Had Over 100 Infractions in Prison Before Recent Hospitalization: ‘Not a Model Prisoner’

Charles Manson, the 82-year-old serial killer serving nine life sentences for the grisly killings of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six other people during a two-day spree in 1969, is “not a model prisoner,” says a California prison official.

“He has had over 100 violations since he was incarcerated, which has been a very long time,” Kristina Khokhobashvili, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, tells PEOPLE.

On Sunday, Manson was taken from California’s Corcoran State Prison and transported to a hospital in Bakersfield for gastrointestinal bleeding, the Los Angeles Times reports. The Times reports that Manson is seriously ill.

Manson’s most recent rules violations at Corcoran — where he has been since 1989 — have included getting caught with three contraband mobile phones, failing to provide a urine sample for random drug testing, threatening prison staff, possession of a weapon and assault.

“He was a nasty prisoner,” retired Los Angeles County prosecutor Stephen Kay, who helped convict Manson, tells PEOPLE. “He threw hot coffee on a guard and spit on a guard’s face. He had a saw blade in the sole of a shoe. He was making little dolls, but they were like voodoo dolls of people, and he would stick needles in them hoping to injure the live person the doll was fashioned after. He said his main activity was making those dolls.”

Manson, Kay says, had a particular dislike for female prison guards. “He was especially nasty to the female guards,” he says. “He never had any respect for women. Women were to be used.”

On one occasion in 1982, prison guards searching Manson’s cell at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville found a hacksaw blade, marijuana and LSD, according to the Times. Also discovered were a nylon rope and a catalogue indicating how to purchase a hot-air balloon, objects that made officers believe he might have been planning a prison escape, the paper reports.

Kay says Manson, who was known for his outlandish and violent behavior behind bars, had enemies in prison.

“They were in the model shop and Manson got into a religious argument with a Hare Krishna, and the Hare Krishna poured lighter fluid on him and lit him up,” Kay says about the Vacaville assault.

• Pick up PEOPLE’s special edition True Crime Stories: Cases That Shocked America, on sale now, for the latest on Casey Anthony, JonBenét Ramsey and more.

Kay adds, “He has a lot of scarring on his upper body. I don’t know if he started it but he didn’t finish it. He was in the general prison population, and after that incident they decided they couldn’t have him in general population anymore. He was at risk of being severely injured.”

Manson first came to the public’s attention after he was arrested for the series of gruesome murders that he and his followers committed in 1969. The murders were part of a twisted plot by Manson to start a race war he called “Helter Skelter,” after the Beatles song. Manson and his so-called “family” of followers were convicted in 1971.

He has been denied parole 12 times and has spent time in San Quentin, Vacaville and Corcoran prisons.
