The Babadook Is The LGBTQ+ Icon 2017 Needs

In case you missed it, the Babadook is now an LGBTQ+ icon. After being mistakenly listed in the “LGBT” section on Netflix, the terrifying villain of the 2014 horror film was embraced as a queer icon by the internet. These are truly strange times we’re living in but perhaps the Babadook is exactly what Pride Month needs.

He may not be the ally we wanted but he’s the ally we deserve. For those of you out of the loop, The Babadook is an Australian horror icon (and a damn scary one at that) who stormed into theatres three years ago. The monster is a fictional boogeyman from a children’s story book who torments its victims until they become aware of its existence.

Now, he’s a LGBTQ+ icon who showed up at the Stonewall Riots.

Often LGBTQ+ heroes emerge from pop culture in strange ways. Sometimes all they need to be are revolutionaries or tragic figures who inspire the community regardless of their professed sexual orientation. Like many other icons, the Babadook has endured hardship and protest. Although it’s probably not clear how or why unless you’ve seen the film. The fictional character represents a embodiment of loss and perseverance in the face of harsh outside forces.

And yes, while it may be a horror villain and the road to becoming an icon wasn’t exactly straightforward, the Babadook’s status as an LGBTQ+ ally is still incredibly potent. The Babadook’s existence provides a strong metaphor for the hardships of being queer: existing in defiance and breaking down barriers regarding its own existence.

We know it’s silly but it’s also awesome. Embrace the Babadook and get shook this Pride Month.

Some Facebook users are seeing a rocket icon in their app. Here's what it does

Some Facebook users are seeing a rocket icon in their app. Here's what it doesIn recent weeks, some users have started noticing a rocket-shaped icon in their Facebook mobile app.  The icon, positioned right next to the main news feed icon, gives you a different type of news feed, one which displays popular posts from people and pages that you haven't befriended or liked.  SEE ALSO: Facebook's new emoji are finally available to everyone I've had the new feature on my Android phone for at least three weeks now, though it tends to disappear and reappear every now and then. (I’m based in Croatia, but there are also reports of users seeing the new icon in the UK.) The rocket feed offers a great deal of local content, so it's possible that it's showing posts that are popular near my geographical location. However, I'm also seeing some posts that are relevant to my interests, so it might not be completely disassociated from my likes/friends.  Most of the posts I'm seeing in the new feed are from pages (some of which I've liked), and some are from users that aren't my friends. Image: Stan Schroeder/Mashable The new feed seems to be remarkably similar to Instagram's Explore tab, which shows you posts that the company's algorithms have determined to be relevant to your interests.
UPDATE: April 3, 2017, 2 p.m. CEST A reader (thanks, Petar) sent us a few screenshots of the new feature as seen on the iPhone, where it is slightly different. Here, the new feed (labeled "Explore") has more of a magazine vibe to it, with two news items laid out side by side.  The new Explore feed looks a little different on the iPhone. Image: Petar Zivkovic This isn't the first time Facebook is testing a different type of news feed on a (typically small) subset of its users. For example, in April 2016 we've seen a new style of news feed which shows stories clustered around certain topics.
Mashable has contacted Facebook for more details on this new feature and will update the post when we hear back from them.  WATCH: Check out WhatsApp's new Statuses

Jane Austen Has Become An Alt-Right Icon, Somehow

Life as a Jane Austen fan can be, occasionally, infuriating. Male classmates deride her as subliterary fluff, pop culture uses her as a shorthand for romance novels, and, for women, professing to love her turns you into a cat-possessing cliché. The latest insult, however, is the most egregious yet: Alt-right thinkers have appropriated Austen as a symbol of white nationalism, according to a Chronicle of Higher Education article by Nicole M. Wright.

Wright, an assistant professor of English at the University of Colorado at Boulder, noticed an Austen cameo in a Milo Yiannopoulos speech in January. “As a Victorian novelist might have put it,” she quotes him, “it is a truth universally acknowledged that an ugly woman is far more likely to be a feminist than a hot one.” Amusingly, Wright points out, Yiannopoulos, an alt-right “fellow traveler,” was incorrect about Austen’s era: the Regency-era author died some 20 years before the Victorian period commenced.

More to the point, however, is that Yiannopoulos is not being very careful with his references. The “truth universally acknowledged” in Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, that “a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife,” is delivered with gentle sarcasm, not earnestness. In parodying the language of philosophical treatises, the author mocks the very simplistic assumption she’s putting forth.

Austen’s scathing wit, often directed at the shallow societal mores of her time, is often overlooked, so it’s little surprise that alt-righters would take superficial and misguided lessons from her work. Diving deeper into the overlap between the author and the alt-right, which is by no means new, Wright found several standard interpretations of Austen’s significance in a variety of alt-right forums she perused: “1) symbol of sexual purity; 2) standard-bearer of a vanished white traditional culture; and 3) exception that proves the rule of female inferiority.”

Given that Austen wrote marriage-plot novels set in the early 19th century, when chastity and advantageous marriages were middle- and upper-class women’s primary objectives, she’s easily appropriated as a symbol of premarital abstinence and valorization of traditional marriage. Jane Austen girls don’t hook up, they settle down; they don’t forge their own way, they build their lives around husbands. In a novel such as Emma or Mansfield Park, the casts are nearly, if not entirely, white, and their social encounters are governed by clear hierarchy and a shared culture.

Though absurd, the deployment of Austen to argue for the idyllic nature of an all-white, patriarchal state makes sense. Using white women as justification for egregious racism is one of the oldest tricks in the bigot’s book, a way of arguing that discrimination and violence against non-white people is necessary to protect fragile white women’s safety and purity. As perhaps the single most famous woman writer in Western history, Austen and her heroines are easily turned to this purpose. “Of course the one female author who has name recognition on par with Shakespeare is the one who gets dragged into debates like this,” Juliette Wells, an associate professor of English at Goucher College, told The New York Times.

Literary critics can and have critiqued Austen for the whiteness and apparent conventional morality of her novels, but the case is by no means simple. As biographer Paula Byrne argued in 2014, there’s substantial textual evidence that Mansfield Park obliquely but pointedly condemned colonial slavery and anti-black racism. In her unfinished novel, Sanditon, a West Indian heiress described as “half mulatto” appears yet never speaks; however, she is presented as a highly eligible maiden.

To use Austen as an alt-right icon, these thinkers must either read the author’s work poorly or not at all, relying on our cultural association of her work with chaste courtship, romantic marriage, and overwhelmingly white British society to imply an endorsement of those values. In fact, white nationalists would do well to realize, her work has endured largely because it cleverly and subtly skewered them.

Eyewear Icon and Champion Skiier Jean Vuarnet Dies at 83

Jean Vuarnet, French Olympic skiing champion and namesake of the leading eyewear brand, died Monday at the age of 83. The cause of death was a stroke.
Vuarnet took the gold medal in downhill skiing at the 1960 Winter Games in Squaw Valley, Calif. He was also a seven-time French champion in the sport.
In 1960, he licensed his surname to a range of eyewear, which went on to become a trendy style, particularly in the Eighties. The brand is in the midst of an overhaul and is fronted by the French actor Vincent Cassel. Vuarnet recently unveiled a collaboration with Rag & Bone.
Vuarnet glasses are known for their bold, athletic-inspired aviator shapes. The brand’s lenses are often brightly colored and are made from mineral glass.
Vuarnet himself defined a skiing technique called l’oeuf, or the egg — in which a skier becomes more aerodynamic by squatting down and leveling their torso perpendicular to the ground.
Vuarnet endured tragedy in 1995 when his wife, Edith Bonlieu, and son, Patrick, were found dead in a mass suicide alongside fellow members of the Order of the Solar Temple cult. They had been discovered, along with some dozen others, in a star formation around a campfire in the mountainous

11 Un-Boring Ways to Wear Black This Fall, Courtesy of Style Icon, Kate Moss

Though this fall is all about rich, jewel-tones (think ruby, topaz, and sapphire), if you’re a. in a rush and don’t have time to contemplate what colors match before speeding out the door, or b. just simply aren’t into color, a black outfit tends to be your go-to.

The trouble is, sometimes black can read a bit boring.

Leave it to Kate Moss, whose style we pine over by the day, month, year, and decade (seriously, we’re still trying to copy her outfits from 1992), to find fresh ways to wear black for fall. Whether you’re aiming for a head-to-toe look, or just want to include few simple black pieces in your outfit, here, Moss offers 11 innovative fall outfits that are guaranteed to have you out the door and looking fabulous in 5-minutes or less. Hey, they don’t call her a style icon for nothing!

The supermodel tops a basic black top and trousers with a spotted coat and matching belt. Easy!

01-kate-moss-jeans-august-2015

She makes black jeans look more put-together with a fine-striped T-shirt, a black blazer and a mini scarf.

11-kate-moss-striped-shirt-red-bag

Here she rocks a striped T-shirt again, this time it’s with black trousers, thigh-high boots and a peacoat.

07-kate-moss-utulity-jumpsuit-february-2014

We love a good utility jumpsuit and here, Moss cinches her’s with a black belt and tops it with a black jacket, giving it a bit more edge.

06-kate-moss-bomber-jacketnovember-2014

For another un-boring black jeans outfit, pair a white or blue button-down shirt and top with a bomber jacket in army green, black, or navy.

08-kate-moss-printed-pants-september-2013

Moss tones down a pair of leopard-print pants with a gray T-shirt and a black blazer.

02-kate-moss-jeans-casual-outfit-june-2015

A printed skinny scarf adds some dimension to an all-black look. Be sure to choose accessories with texture or embellishment, like these fringed booties.

12-kate-moss-cape

Capes can be a bit dramatic, so by pairing her fringed black cape with skinny black trousers, she makes the look less runway, more real.

04-kate-moss-loepard-coay-black-jeans-march-2015

If you love wearing head-to-toe black, consider investing in a statement coat to make every single one of your outfits pop. Leopard may seem like a busy print, but it takes on a neutral vibe when paired with black.

09-kate-moss-leather-pants

Pair your leather trousers with a subtly-printed silk blouse and a faux fur jacket.

13-kate-moss-green-pants

When in doubt, choose one item in your outfit to focus on and keep the rest to black. Moss makes her high-waisted army green trousers more tame with a black top and shoes.

Ode to a Royal Fashion Icon: 15 Princess Diana Outfits That You May Not Have Seen Before

It’s hard to believe that Monday, August 31, will mark 18 years since the tragic death of Princess Diana. And while the People’s Princess died at the young age of 36, she certainly left her mark on the world and of course, on style.

Diana is famous for having fun with fashion. In the ’80s is was all about bold colors—fuchsia! cerulean! amethyst!—prints, and the most decadent collection of diamond tiaras, befitting of a princess. Later on in the ’90s she went for a sleeker look in line with the times. With Gianni Versace as a close friend and go-to designer, she transformed into Di 2.0. Her look got ultra sophisticated with elegant suits in sherbet hues and body conscious tank dresses in stark white or midnight blue, accentuating her piercing blue. Here, we look back to one of the great fashion icons with vintage photos of our favorite looks, that inspire us still.

Making of a Style Icon: The Stylist Behind Laverne Cox’s Fashion

She’s beauty, she’s grace, she’s ruling the red carpet. Actress Laverne Cox, star of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, wherever she goes, is turning heads and wowing the press with her elegantly unique style.

After being named one of Time‘s 100 Most Influential People, scoring a coveted spot on People‘s Most Beautiful People list, and appearing on numerous magazine covers, it’s hard to keep up with this megastar.

But even a great deal more is going on. Laverne Cox is establishing herself as not just a leading figure promoting the transgender community, but also as a style icon.

It is often thought that behind most exceedingly successful individuals is a person helping navigate the tricky waters of stardom. So who’s the stylist working with Laverne to perfect her sophisticated aesthetic? Christina Pacelli, stylist to Laverne, shares with us the process of elevating someone into style stardom.

As most fashion boys and girls do, this Huntington Beach, California native discovered her love for fashion at a young age. She says she first became fixated on clothes in fourth grade. Back-to‐school‐shopping was the highlight of her year. With a mother from Mexico and a first-generation Italian father, Pacelli says her upbringing was anything but conventional, as she has been on her own and financially autonomous since the tender age of 15.

Clueless‘s Cher and My‐So‐Called‐Life‘s Jared Leto have all provided inspiration to Pacelli, who admires their hard-to-achieve “I don’t give a damn” look.

After studying Communications and Law at UCLA, she began her professional career as an entertainment and lifestyle publicist. She then transitioned to her love of fashion and began apprenticing for stylists such as New York‐based Anna Katsanis, who has styled editorials for major magazines around the world.

Through her publicist relationships, Pacelli was introduced to Laverne and it was fireworks from the start.

Pacelli says:

Laverne and I share the same stylistic approach. She has an admirable sense of fashion, and a great point of view when it comes to personal style and the fashion industry. She is very involved in her styling, which I believe comes through in her looks. In Laverne’s words, ‘I follow the guiding pillars of FFPS in fashion — Fit, Fabric, Proportion and Silhouette. If all are right, then the look will translate well’

But how do all of the buzz-worthy looks come together? From custom Marc Bouwer to Viktor Luna, Cox and Pacelli have procured show‐stopping styles.

Pacelli says:

When Laverne and I first began working together, we briefed one another on our individual stylistic philosophies. With Laverne, it is not simply about wearing a designer garment. What she wears embodies her personality, confidence and her role for the occasion, or it will feel out of place and naturally won’t be worn.

With so many notable moments, Pacelli says that some of her proudest times with Laverne include the 2014 Emmy Awards in custom Marc Bouwer, the Creative Arts Emmys and Entertainment Weekly party in Donna Karan and the White House Correspondents Dinner in Ines Di Santo. Pacelli notes, “Laverne’s style has always been feminine and pretty. Our work together has built upon that, to take her style to non-obvious places and further showcase her confidence, grace, strength and sophistication.”

Landing spots on countless best‐dressed lists, Christina does not disregard the strides they have made together.

Pacelli describes:

She has been called a style icon on the rise. I do not disagree with that. She is making history with her presence in the industry and I do not take the job lightly. As a transgender black woman who has already pioneered so much, and broken barriers, the way Laverne looks and dresses has an impact and influence upon so many people, LGBT or non‐LGBT. People have shared with me they have been moved to tears observing Laverne because of what she stands for and how she inspired them with her visual presence.

Christina herself has been tapped to be featured in a Viacom series, which will air on MTV and Netflix.

As Laverne continues to gain meteoric success and notoriety, it’s clear we have a great deal of fierce fashion to look forward to. And not only will the fashion be beautiful, but Cox and Pacelli will together be defying cultural norms and changing the world’s perception of the transgender community.

“I knew that styling Laverne Cox came with more responsibility than just vanity. She inspires people simply by what she is wearing. And then she speaks and inspires them more. I understand and take my responsibility very seriously. I know eyes are on Laverne from all over the world.”

Anna Wintour: Vogue Magazine’s Editor-In-Chief and Fashion Icon

Anna Wintour: Vogue Magazine’s Editor-In-Chief and Fashion Icon

This book is part of Hyperink’s best little books series. This best little book is 3,800+ words of fast, entertaining information on a highly demanded topic. Based on reader feedback (including yours!), we may expand this book in the future. If we do so, we’ll send a free copy to all previous buyers. ABOUT THE BOOK The paparazzi follow her around, hoping to catch a glimpse of her smiling. What she wears makes the style section of New York Times every time she goes out. She dines with celebrities, gets the best seats at sporting events, and is invited to all the best parties. Am I talking about the next Hollywood “It” girl? Not at all. I’m talking about Anna Wintour, the 62-year-old Editor of Vogue. Wintour, who has been the Editor of Vogue for the past 23 years, has somewhat unprecedented fame for a magazine editor. She is undoubtedly the inspiration for the maniacal editor Miranda Priestly in “The Devil Wears Prada,” as well as the focus of the 2007 documentary “The September Issue” which studies the making of Vogue’s largest issue ever. Credited with being the most powerful woman in fashion, Wintour’s decisions on the editorial content of Vogue can set the trends and tone of fashion for months to come. Designers clamor to show her their collections, while simultaneously admitting to being afraid of her. MEET THE AUTHOR Kate Kastelein has over 10 years of experience writing, researching and editing articles, eNewsletters, web content, press releases, and resource books. She’s a huge nerd, and is interested in everything from science and the latest technology to crafts, food and celebrity gossip. Kate’s a native Mainer, and when she’s not shoveling snow or writing, she’s huddled near the fire with her daughter, husband, and dogs. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Dubbed “Nuclear Wintour” when she took over as Editor of British Vogue, many of her close friends and co-workers quickly come to her defense and say that though she is a decisive, firm boss, she certainly isn’t the mon

Meet Your New Style Icon: Marilyn Monroe, Circa Her College Years

marilyn-monroe-coat-picture-1950

The show notes for Max Mara‘s fall 2015 collection taught me something I didn’t know: that Marilyn Monroe attended college classes (and loved reading, leaving behind a 400-book library when she died). The above snap of Marilyn is from a 1950 photo shoot in the backyard of a Hollywood agent, one of the years right before her career really took off, and, according to The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe by J. Randy Taraborrelli, a time period when she was taking literature classes at UCLA.

The majority of photos we’ve all seen of Marilyn are either movie stills or promotional pics and they all play to her sex-bomb persona. There’s a whole other strata of her personal style though—less documented but worth paying attention to—where she’s off the clock and wearing classic basics that are less curve-hugging.

I dug through a lot of vintage snaps, and these were the most inspiring I saw. If you’re craving more, Life shared images from a shoot 24-year-old Marilyn did when she was still relatively unknown (so much so that the magazine declined to publish them). Her clothes, monogrammed shirt included, hinted at that bookish side, as did the photographer’s note that the images were taken when “we’d go out to Griffith Park and she’d read poetry.”

I’m a big fan of the way the star’s cerebral side has been reinterpreted for now. “Marilyn’s ‘me’ time menswear classics are reinvented…silhouettes are shrunken or maxi-sized,” the Max Mara notes read. “A vision which is brainy, sexy, and modern.” The show opened with Gigi Hadid, a modern-day bombshell of Marilyn caliber, pulling a camel coat around her. Joan Smalls followed in a chunky cardigan sweater that was inspired by one Marilyn wore in an iconic 1962 beach photo shoot, and Lindsey Wixson wore a camel set that turned the sweatshirt into something any sex kitten would covet.
