Chanel at the Oscars: 13 Iconic Karl Lagerfeld-Designed Red Carpet Looks

Karl Lagerfeld was a master of many things, from design to photography — but his red-carpet looks were especially spectacular. With the Academy Awards coming up on Sunday, WWD looks back at the late designer’s most memorable Chanel looks at the Oscars.
Historically, Lagerfeld’s take on Oscar fashion was about clean silhouettes and a neutral color palette fused with intricate, couture details such as embroidery and beading, as seen on the likes of Diane Kruger, Sarah Jessica Parker and Pharrell Williams.
Julianne Moore wore Chanel couture dresses back-to-back for her best actress win in 2015, and then again to present in 2016. Lagerfeld created a custom look in 2018 for Margot Robbie, for whom he designed a minimalist white gown with off-the-shoulder crystal embroidery, to critical acclaim.
Perhaps the most newsworthy Chanel look at the Oscars, however, came in 2001 when Jennifer Lopez wore a sweeping taupe ballgown with a transparent bodice. Only in Hollywood.
Click through the above gallery to see more of Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel designs on the Oscars’ red carpet.

Julianne Moore picked up the Oscar for best actress in 2015, wearing a Chanel couture gown  covered in no fewer than 80,000 sequins.

Cindy Crawford on What Makes an Image Iconic

FOREVER ICONIC: Swedish brand Acne Studios unveiled behind-the-scene shots of its latest campaign at the Galerie Edouard Escougnou on Friday evening.
Shot by Sam Abell, a photographer known for his work at “National Geographic,” the pictures showed supermodel Cindy Crawford working her magic against the stunning backdrop of Cadillac Ranch, a land art installation in Amarillo, Tex. The exhibition is open to the public until Oct. 2, with proceeds of the sales entirely going to WWF France.
The day of the shoot, the team set off into the desert at 5:30 a.m. to make the most of natural light. “It was freezing cold and pitch black,” recalled Crawford at the opening night of the exhibition. “And then the sun started to come up, and you see these silver cars that look like they are growing out of the earth.”
It was Abell’s first fashion shoot. He was astonished by Crawford’s ability to work the camera. “She would do this kind of dance: She started moving, then slowed down to hold a pose, and started up again,” Abell explained. “She was a true expert at being dynamic in the scene.”

Scream Mega Fans Rent Out the House from the Film to Recreate the Iconic Final Party Screen

Scream lovers can have the scare of their life — at a price.

Die-hard fans Anthony Masi and Nate Ragon reportedly spent $ 22,000 to rent out the 5 bedrooms, 4 bathroom Santa Rosa, CA home from the horror movie Scream to recreate the final party scene for a Halloween celebration, according to TMZ.

But the duo plan doesn’t plan to keep the horror nostalgia to themselves, they are throwing a big spooky bash — just like the characters did in the film.

However, while many who attended the party in the 1996 film paid with their lives, this party will be a ticketed event named Scream Comes Home.

Taking place the weekend before Halloween, the party will allow guests to experience the movie in real life as Masi and Ragon plan to fill the house with scary surprises and memorabilia from the film.

“The movie, SCREAM, was filmed in Santa Rosa, California, and the last act of the movie was filmed in a single location… a large house in Tomales, a little town adjacent to Santa Rosa. This house was known as ‘Stu’s house’ in the script, and the screenplay referred to the length showdown ending as SCENE 118,” Masi and Ragon wrote on the event’s website.

When filmmakers finished filming it, they had T-shirts made up that said, ‘I survived Scene 118.’”

Tickets start at $ 200 for basic entry, but fans also had the option to purchase the overnight package for $ 1750, which sold out in just two days. And for those who really want to be scared, they can have the guy behind Ghost Face’s voice actually call their cell phones.

“Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Ghost Face gave YOU a call? Now you’ll be able to find out because voiceover artist Roger Jackson– the voice of Ghost Face in all four SCREAM films- has agreed to call fans and talk to them just like he does in the movies!” the site explained.

The original film — which spawned three sequels and an MTV television series — starred Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David ArquetteDrew Barrymore also had a cameo in the iconic movie.

Gilbert Baker, Creator of Iconic Gay Pride Rainbow Flag, Has Died at 65

The man who tie-dyed and hand-stitched the rainbow flag that has become the worldwide symbol for gay pride and the LGBTQ community has died. He was 65.

Gilbert Baker, who described himself as a “gay Betsy Ross,” was found dead on Friday in his New York City home, the New York Times reports.

“Gilbert Baker was a pioneer in the gay rights movement,” LGBT Network CEO Dr. David Kilmnick said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

“It is a great loss to the LGBT community and all Americans and he will be greatly missed, but leaves us with a symbol of unity and pride that will carry on forever.”

Cleve Jones, a gay rights activist and friend of Baker, told the Times that Baker had a stroke many years ago but had not been sick recently.

Baker created the flag in 1978. That year, Harvey Milk, a San Francisco politician and gay rights leader, asked Baker to create an emblem for the movement (Milk was assassinated that year).

Along with volunteers, Baker tie-dyed and pieced together the first gay pride flags at a gay community center, unveiling them in a June gay pride parade, the Times reports.

“We stood there and watched and saw the flags, and their faces lit up,” Jones told the publication. “It needed no explanation. People knew immediately that it was our flag.”

Couple Performs Iconic ‘Dirty Dancing’ Scene At Wedding And Nails It

Newlyweds Lindsay Pergola and Richie Guarini skipped a traditional first dance in favor of something much, much better: a phenomenal performance of the most iconic “Dirty Dancing” scene.

At their Dec. 31 wedding in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, the couple surprised their guests with the “Time of My Life” dance that Baby (Jennifer Grey) and Johnny (Patrick Swayze) performed at the end of the 1987 movie. And, of course, they nailed the famous lift

It was my favorite movie growing up and I always had the idea in the back of my head ever since I could remember,” the bride told The Huffington Post. “Then when we got engaged I asked Richie if he would do it with me and he agreed!”

A relative posted a video of the performance to Facebook after the wedding. It has since been viewed more than 12 million times.

The couple’s family and friends were blown away by the big surprise.

“Everyone flipped out and all we could hear was everyone screaming and clapping!” the bride said. “Afterwards everyone was like, ‘OMG I can’t believe you guys did that, that was amazing! Everyone was shocked over the fact that I got Richie to do that and that he pulled it off!”

Lindsay has been a dancer her whole life and teaches classes at Essex Dance Academy in Fairfield, New Jersey. Richie, however, had no previous dance experience. They began practicing a month before the wedding, just a couple times a week — though you’d never know it based on their stellar performance.

Watch the couple bring down the house in the video above.

GANT x Future: Iconic Retailer Partners with Design Students

GANT “Oxford Fitted Shirt” styled by Sophia Charles. Photographed by Danielle Rueda

Steve Jobs and Leo Tolstoy shared a surprising creative belief. The simplest things are the hardest to master. “You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make something simple,” said Jobs. This fall, in the heart of San Francisco, a Menswear Styling class has been working on a project unlike any other in the industry: reinventing the classic white button-down. Except this isn’t an ordinary school project but a collaboration between the iconic US retailer GANT and the Academy of Art University School of Fashion. This unique engagement marked the first time the brand has partnered with an educational institution. The one-of- a-kind incentive is having their work showcased at the GANT flagship store in San Francisco. What a great experience!

Eleven senior styling student were given a GANT shirt and the liberty to reinterpret it for a lookbook. The only direction was to focus on the versatility of the garment without having it resemble another line. Every step of the process was in the hands of the students. In an interview with Fashion School Daily, the Assistant Director of Styling in the School of Fashion, Flore Morton stated that she "wanted students to build full stories, investigate brands, and think like designers.” The students turned for inspiration to the brand’s stylish present and captivating heritage.

GANT was founded in 1949 in New Haven, Connecticut. It has since expanded globally beyond menswear into other market segments creating a name for itself as a premier lifestyle brand with aims to increase its reach by 2020 under the new direction of global CEO Patrik Nilsson. GANT has originally been associated with effortless Ivy League style and quality tailored shirts. In addition to the classic sportswear heritage GANT line they’ve also launched GANT Diamond G and GANT Rugger, contemporary lines reflecting diverse aesthetics.

Back to the earlier simplicity discourse. Tolstoy argued that “the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him.” Students had to start from clean slate. Fangdi Li opted to use the GANT Rugger Indigo denim shirt for her nocturnal vision: draping of the shirt on the body in a linear way over a black hoodie for a restructured silhouette. Teresa Tran kept the focus on layering possibilities. She infused vintage pieces with the GANT shirt that was accented with accessories influenced by the subcultures of the film “This is England”. Sophia Charles drew inspiration from the GANT Instagram account and the French film “La Haine” for her minimalist yet bold version with accessorized with electric red tape. Overall, the results showcased GANT adaptability and immense talent of the Academy students.

The Academy is the only American school with an accredited styling program! It seems like a natural fit for the school and the brand, both of whom focus on quality, innovation and laying a foundation for a more fashionable future. For the creative director Christopher Bastin, it’s all about legacy, “having a legacy is something that sets you apart and gives you authenticity and credibility. And, most importantly, it gives you a platform and security as a brand.” This pioneering collaboration also benefited Fashion Journalism students who were assigned to follow the process closely and report on it via various outlets. Stephan Rabimov, director of Social Media Center and Fashion Journalism, commented: “Opportunities like this benefit all involved. Our students loved working with GANT. We salute the GANT team for their visionary leadership and look forward to providing more professional experiences that are not available at any other institution.”

The finalist looks from the GANT x Academy of Art collaborations will be presented at GANT’s San Francisco flagship store at 552 Hayes Street on January 19, 2017, from 5 to 7 p.m.

A Look Back At Franca Sozzani’s Iconic Style

Franca Sozzani, the longtime editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue, died Thursday at age 66 after battling an illness.

Beloved by the industry and fashion enthusiasts alike, Sozanni was forward-thinking and passionate, catapulting Vogue Italia into the global spotlight with powerful imagery from the day she took the reigns as editor-in-chief in 1998. Her iconic and important magazine world moments include releasing a famous “black issue” in 2008, marking the first time a major glossy exclusively featured models of color.

As Hamish Bowles wrote on Thursday, Sozzani “turned her Vogue into a magazine that not only celebrated the power of the image, but also used fashion stories as a platform to discuss broader issues, and the obsessions of the fashionable world. Franca had a passion for, and a deep knowledge of, fashion and its history, but an ability to keep an amused distance from its modern day excesses.”

Beyond her admirable career, Sozanni was known for the impeccable personal style she displayed on many a red carpet and at various events through the years.

Here, in remembrance, a peek back at some of her most iconic looks:

Watch 2 Guinea Pigs Recreate Iconic ‘Lady And The Tramp’ Spaghetti Scene

Sharing is caring, and these guinea pig sisters care about each other in the most adorable way.

Guinea pigs Grace and Suzie were caught on camera sharing a single blade of grass. The teeny meal eventually results in a friendly game of tug-of-war, filmed in slow motion.

The video, which was shared on Facebook earlier this month, has taken the Interwebs by storm. It’s racked up more than 40 million views as of Wednesday afternoon. But how could you not completely melt after seeing these two munch on their piece of grass?

Just watch as Grace and Suzie civilly snack on their respective ends of grass. When they reach the middle, however, their meal becomes a harrowing quest for the last bit of grass, intensified by the slo-mo effect. Don’t worry, though! After the two split the food, they back to politely nomming on their snack like nothing ever happened.

The clip is pretty darn cute, and some social media users have even compared it to the spaghetti scene from “Lady and the Tramp.”

These guinea pigs are so precious that we totally understand if, after seeing the video, you have a hankering to get one of your own. But if you do choose to get a teeny furry friend, check out some of your local shelters and rescue organizations — many of which have rescue guinea pigs in need of a forever home. Petfinder is also a good place to start looking for that adorable grass-munching critter.

The 10 Most Iconic VMA Red Carpet Fashion Moments, Ever

The Video Music Awards are happening this Sunday and it’s the kind of award show were style memories are made. It’s typically one of those red carpets where anything goes and, as such, stars feel a little more liberty to take risks. Sometimes it’s awesome and…sometimes it involves raw meat.

Back in 1998, Gwen Stefani was in the middle of her No Doubt heyday and her funky style was everything. She eschewed the dress in favor of a fuzzy triangle bikini top because, why not?

Also in 1998: Rose McGowan walked the carpet with beau Marilyn Manson in a dress that was hardly a dress. Skinny chains gave her some coverage, but it was mostly all skin and g-string.

Compared to Miss McGowan, Lil’ Kim’s infamous purple pastie felt like a lot of outfit. The sparkly jumpsuit would have been attention-grabbing enough on its own, but add in that extra skin and wowzee.

In 2000, Jennifer Lopez attended the awards show with P Diddy in a combo of white crop top, jeans, and bandana that really showed her style circa the early aughts.

Before Beyonce was Beyonce, she was on the scene with Destiny’s Child. The trio attended red carpet events in a lot of matching outfits, including the orange and blue looks they rocked at the 2001 VMAs.

When Britney Spears walked the red carpet in this Madonna-inspired outfit back in 2003, it might not have totally registered as being major. It wasn’t until her performance later—and the three-way lip-lock with Christina Aguilera and Madge—that it really became iconic.

Cher showed up at the VMAs in 2010 and brought her signature out-there style along with her. In place of a crazy gown, she wore a sheer bodysuit covered in crystals and topped with a tough leather jacket.

But try as Cher might, there was no way she could’ve eclipsed Lady Gaga in all her raw meat, erm, glory?

The big celebrity news of the 2011 ceremony was the extra curve that Beyonce was rocking. During her performance onstage, the singer slid her hand over her belly to announce, yup, there was an heir coming. You could see it in her red Lanvin gown too.

For last year’s red carpet, Katy Perry did an homage to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake with a denim Versace dress she matched to her date.

A few of our red carpet favorites, along with some infamous performance outfits, have inspired what could be the ultimate tribute of all: Rice Krispie creations. Yup, you totally read that right.

There’s no way that the costume she’s referring to isn’t the super-sexy leggings and off-the-shoulder top she wore to reveal her bad-girl side to Danny at the graduation carnival, right? The pants were so tight that she reportedly had to be sewn into them before filming; after, she took them as a parting gift.

Newton-John’s talked about a desire to sell off the pants to raise funds for her charity before, telling Oprah about her intention while bringing the skinnies along for a show visit back in 2011.

Get the Look: Shop Caitlyn Jenner’s Iconic First Photoshoot

Today, Bruce Jenner appeared for the first time as Caitlyn Jenner on the July cover of Vanity Fair. The unveiling was not only historic for transgender people across the globe, it was also a big moment for fashion designers whose dresses Jenner wore in the epic shoot.

Jenner wears a Zac Posen dress in a still from the Vanity Fair video.

Jenner wore looks from Badgley Mischka, Zac Posen, and Herve Leger in the Annie Leibovitz shoot, which took place in Los Angeles. We spoke to some designers to find out what they had to say about outfitting Jenner for a cover that will go down in history.

“I’m very proud to be included in the roster of chosen designers for such a historic moment captured by the iconic Annie Leibovitz,” Zac Posen told Glamour . “I think the most important message that comes from this is to be who you are and feel beautiful in your skin.”

Upon seeing Jenner wearing a signature Herve Leger bandage dress, Chief Creative Officer Lubov Azria quoted Ralph Ellison in The Invisible Man to echo her sentiments: “’When I discover who I am, I’ll be free. We are honored to be a part of this empowering moment.”
