Iggy Azalea Stirs Up Controversy Over Tweets About Her Britney Spears Collab, ‘Pretty Girls’

Iggy Azalea doesn’t seem too happy with Britney Spears over the success, or lack thereof, of their track, “Pretty Girls.”

During a Twitter Q&A session on Sunday, Azalea appeared to throw shade at Spears over the minimal promotion of their duet, which dropped in May and peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The rapper’s remarks about the duet came after a Twitter user posted: “Even if PG flopped a little bit still getting a lot of views on YT and it’s the summer anthem of 2015, so whatever we love you.”

When a pop music fan board shared Azalea’s tweets and accused her of shading Spears, the Australia native shot back.

She then called out the press for skewing her comments.

Last month, at the Billboard Music Awards Azalea gushed about getting to work with the pop star.

“It’s not something that I ever anticipated happening … And I didn’t know I’d end up making such a crossover mesh of pop and rap where that would be a collaboration that would be possible,” she said. “In the last two years I kind of transitioned my style so much to where that could be plausible. So I didn’t when I was younger, but it’s really quite surreal.”

Iggy Azalea Cancels Entire ‘Great Escape’ Tour

If you had plans to see Iggy Azalea this year, the good news is you’re going to get your money back.

On Friday, ticket holders for the 24-year-old’s “The Great Escape” tour received an email notifying them that all dates had been canceled, reports JustJared:

The Iggy Azalea Great Escape Tour scheduled for this fall has been cancelled and refunds are available at point of purchase. There will be a new tour planned around Iggy‘s new record to be released in 2016 and we apologize for any inconvenience

While there was no reason given for the tour’s cancellation in the email, this isn’t the first snag in the production timeline.

The tour was initially scheduled to start this spring, but in March, Azalea’s label Def Jam released a statement saying that the tour would be delayed until September, so that the rapper could deliver the show that she “envisaged to share” and would require more time to develop it.

Days later, Azalea explained the delays telling AMP 97.1, “It is bumped back because I am a psychopath … I would be making a lot of sacrifices and cuts and changes and compromises would have to be made to get this thing done in time.”

She added, “So I really considered what I wanted to do: keep and honor the tickets and this date for fans but not the show I’d envisioned or kind I’ve promised them, a lesser version of it with maybe not so many people like jumping out of the ceilings and flying all over the place, or do I want to move it and have the absolute best show, the show that I envisioned? And obviously I’ve chosen to move it.”

Q-Tip Offers Iggy Azalea A Hip Hop History Lesson, T.I. & Azealia Banks Respond

A brewing battle between Iggy Azalea and fellow industry artists has found the Australian-born rapper in hot water, yet again.

Following a series of tweets responding to rapper Azealia Banks candid Hot 97 interview where she expressed her much-publicized issues with Iggy, “hacktavist” group Anonymous threatened to release “snapshots” from an alleged sex tape featuring the chart-topper if she didn’t issue an apology for her comments to Banks.

As if that wasn’t enough, veteran MC-musician Q-Tip took to his personal Twitter account on Saturday to give Iggy, and his more than 700,000 followers, a history lesson on the origins of Hip Hop and its connection to sociopolitical movements. Here’s what he wrote:

“HipHop is a artistic and socio-political movement/culture that sprang from the disparate ghettos of NY in the early 70’s Coming off the heels of the CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT and approaching the end of the Vietnam war it was a crossroads 4 America specially for blacks in the US our neighborhoods were PROLIFERATED w/a rush of HEROINE.”

“Our school systems here in NY dungeon traps with light for learning… blk men some of whom didn’t return from tours of duty n the ones who did came w/war baggage (agent orange, addiction, ect..)… these men had families but due to these events and throw into the mix the public emasculation… they proved to be handicapped parents. The surrogate parents? The STREETS… the streets of gangs, crimes, and the hustlers coddled us and swept us up.”

“But! Being a spirited, rhythmic & expressive people music art dance outlined our existence… it proved a way for us to exhault to scream to dance to laugh and find OUR VOICE… we weren’t at the time skilled musicians as kids. We had records, turntables, ideas and INGENUITY being natural chemist we took from whatever was availed to us and we created something mighty and special.”

“We cut breakbeats back n forth we took a hybrid of Jamaican toasting along w/ radio jock rap( hank Spann, Gary Byrd, ect.) and we put our rap down.. it was a neighborhood thing really. Black and Latino Kids were carving out their space and it became infectious… eventually Keith Cowboy coined the phrase hiphop . Yrs later the first rap record was recorded and now we r moving.”

“But during these strides this country still had the monster of racism and racial insensitivity breathing and ruling… believe it or not young black n Latino lives specifically weren’t acknowledged in mainstream American culture unless Of course.. the convo was abt gangs , being criminals or uneducated. And hey! Like I stated early our families were rushed our schools sucked and we were left to put devices to survive… but HIPHOP showed that we had DEPTH, fire, and BRILLANCE… the music was undeniable! It moved from NY N became national and even GLOBAL.”

“Hiphop now was FOR EVERYBODY!! All of those who cld relate to the roots, the spirit, the history, the energy.. It reached YOU… it touched your spirit n took u up. We magnetized you! That’s what BRILLANCE does… now u are fulfilling your dreams … BUT! you have to take into account the HISTORY as you move underneath the banner of hiphop. As I said before… hiphop is fun it’s vile it’s dance it’s traditional it’s light hearted but 1 thing it can never detach itself from is being a SOCIO-Political movement.”

“U may ask why … Well once you are born black your existence I believe is joined with socio-political epitaph and philos based on the tangled and treacherous history SLAVERY alone this is the case it never leaves our conversation… Ever. WeAther in our universities our dinner tables our studios or jail cells… the effects still resononates with us. It hurts… We get emotional and angry and melancholy… did u know president Clinton was the ONLY PRESIDENT to apologize for it? did u know that remnants of slavery exist today thru white privilege? When certain “niceties” r extended your way because of how u look? Isn’t that crazy?”

“I say this 2 say u are a hiphop artist who has the right 2 express herself however she wishes… this is not a chastisement this is not admonishment at ALL this is just one artist reaching to another hoping to spark insight into the field you r in. I say this in the spirit of a hopeful healthy dialogue that maybe one day we can continue… I’ve been on twitter a long time and this will probably be my last series of tweets pretty much but I’m Kool with it as long as I got to share this w u. Zzzzzzz’s up! Peace!”

Following Q-Tip’s 40-plus tweets, Iggy’s label boss, T.I. also decided to jump in to share his thoughts by tweeting a followup response.

And, as expected, Azealia Banks – who has previously had a public feud with T.I. before, too — responded to the rapper’s remarks.

Azealia Banks’ Emotional Explanation For Her Problem With Iggy Azalea

During an emotional 47-minute interview with Hot 97, Azealia Banks explained her much-publicized problems with Iggy Azalea and the music industry in general with regard to how it treats black recording artists.

“I feel, just like in this country, whenever it comes to our things, like black issues or black politics or black music or whatever, there’s always this undercurrent of kind of like a, ‘Fuck you,'” Banks told Ebro in the Morning hosts Ebro Darden and Peter Rosenberg. “There’s always like a, ‘Fuck y’all, niggas. Y’all don’t really own shit. Y’all don’t have shit.'”

Banks referenced Macklemore winning Best Rap Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards as an example, before taking on Azalea.

“That Iggy Azalea shit isn’t better than any fucking black girl that’s rapping today, you know?” Banks said. “When they give those awards out — because the Grammys are supposed to be accolades of artistic excellence, you know what I mean? Iggy Azalea is not excellent. […] When they give these Grammys out, all it says to white kids is: ‘Oh yeah, you’re great, you’re amazing, you can do whatever you put your mind to.’ And it says to black kids: ‘You don’t have shit. You don’t own shit, not even the shit you created for yourself,’ and it makes me upset.”

Banks, who called Azalea’s attempts to appropriate Nicki Minaj’s success over the past two years a “cultural smudging” (Banks cited how Azalea released a reissue album called “Reclassified,” which was similar in title to Minaj’s album, “Roman Reloaded”), later explained why this is all so important to her.

“Everybody knows that the basis of modern capitalism is slave labor. The selling and trading of these slaves. There are fucking huge corporations that are caking off that slave money and shit like that. So until y’all motherfuckers are ready to talk about what you owe me,” she said while breaking down in tears. “At the very fucking least, you owe me the right to my fucking identity. And to not exploit that shit. That’s all we’re holding on to with hip-hop and rap.”

In response to Banks’ interview, Azalea blasted the rapper on Twitter for being “poisonous,” “miserable” and a “bigot.” (Banks has been criticized in the past for her use of the slur “faggot.”)

Banks perhaps knew she was going to get backlash for her words. “In general, whenever I have to say anything about anything, then it’s like, ‘Oh, here goes this crazy black bitch,'” she said. Watch Banks’ full interview — where she also discusses her issues with T.I. — with Hot 97 below.
