Kay Jewelers Launches Investigation Into Service Policies After Customer Accuses Company of Stealing Diamonds

Kay Jewelers is launching an internal investigation into diamond servicing practices after an Illinois woman accused the jewelry store of stealing her diamond engagement ring when she took it in to get serviced.

Requitta Darshae East slammed the jewelry chain in a lengthy Facebook post that has since gone viral with over 1,500 shares, claiming that Kay Jewelers tried to give her the wrong ring and failed to track down her actual one. Since her post, hundreds of other Kay shoppers shared their own similar stories in the comments on Facebook. This isn’t the first time the retailer has faced these allegations: A 2016 Buzzfeed exposé also uncovered a similar case of a woman whose $ 4,299.99 diamond was swapped with a different stone when she brought it in for a repair.

Now, Kay Jewelers’s parent company Signet Jewelers — which also owns Zales, Jared the Galleria of Jewelry, H.Samuel, Piercing Pagoda and more — is working to rectify the situation by launching an internal investigation and working with Darshae East directly to resolve the situation and address her specific concerns.

In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, a representative for Signet Jewelers said: “We’ve been working diligently on the customer complaint you reported on to understand the underlying concerns. I’m pleased to share that we reached a resolution that has satisfied the customer and we continue to work to resolve other concerns that were posted in connection with her post.”

In an effort to understand the concerns, Signet has launched an internal investigation: “Our goal is to treat all customer concerns with a high level of integrity, seriousness, and care. Once we become aware of a customer complaint, we run it to ground until a resolution has been reached. We are continuously re-evaluating our policies and practices to ensure we are providing the highest levels of service at all points of the repair journey. Like all customer complaints, we have launched an investigation into this particular matter and remain in close contact with the customer in question as we work toward a resolution.”

As for what the internal investigation entails, a representative said: “The internal investigation retraces every touchpoint of the customer’s jewelry journey. The customer’s jewelry stays within our jewelry Design and Service Centers or, is shipped to the manufacturer that created the item. We have 241 Design & Service Centers internally, with 2,000+ employees are skilled artisans held to our exact standards.”

Representatives from the company also detailed the servicing process, writing in the statement: “Our policies and procedures ensure that Signet has the right skilled people to do the right skilled work to treat each of our customer’s pieces with care and professionalism.”

Signet also noted that work is completed at multiple touchpoints: “Virtually all of our work is shipped to and cared for by Signet’s jewelry artisans at our 241 Design and Service Centers, and two Signet manufacturing centers. A small percentage of work is completed by expert Signet-approved manufacturers and specialists. All packages containing customer jewelry are closely tracked and monitored throughout the process by a third-party as part of our chain of custody process.”

There are also three phases of servicing, they say, (1) take-in to log the details of the piece, (2) inspection upon completion to confirm repairs have been done, and (3) delivery to make sure it satisfies the customer. At that point, the company says it “performs a side-by-side comparison of the original photo to the repair image under a Digital Gemscope, obtains a customer signature expressing 100% satisfaction with the quality of the repair work, and provides a six month guarantee on the repair workmanship.”

The company noted that employees who handle jewelry are required to participate in ongoing training, which begins with multiple training systems within the first 180 days of employment.

“To ensure that our entire repair team intimately understands our process and policies, the majority of our leadership has been promoted from within the Company. Every one of our Design and Repair Service center managers and leaders have deep experience as jewelers, each with a high level of training and relevant accreditations,” representatives for Kay Jewelers said.

Darshae East described her experience in detail on Facebook.

“Where do I begin…?? There are so many layers to this,” Darshae East began her post. “July 2nd, 2018 – I take my wedding ring (both the engagement ring and band) to Kay Jewelers In River Oaks Mall to have it serviced. My ring is white gold, which needs to be dipped in rhodium to keep it from yellowing. Anyway, I take it in, the employee is supposed to check the diamonds before sending it out to have it dipped. Oddly enough, the diamond checkers aren’t working. She looks at the ring under a microscope and says that the diamonds look fine. Sends the ring out and says that the repair will take about 2 weeks to complete.”

“I receive a call from an employee at the store about 2 weeks later. My ring is back, but apparently I have two chipped diamonds in my center stone that need to be replaced. (Isn’t that what was supposed to be checked before the ring was sent out in the first place??” FYI: There are NO chipped diamonds indicated on the receipt I received on July 2nd.) She asks if its ok to go ahead and send the ring to corporate for repairs. Of course it is. So she sends it back. She tells me that it will take about 8-10 weeks for repair.”

She continued, “Fast forward 8-10 weeks… I receive a call on a Friday from Kays, “Hello Mrs. East, your repair is back in the store.” I get to the store only to find that the ring that was returned is NOT MINE. I explain to the employee (who happens to be the store manager) that the ring is not mine and proceed to show her pictures. She looks at both rings and agrees that the ring is not mine. She tells me that she will call corporate on Monday to figure out what happened.”

After going back and forth to the mall store multiple times to pick up her ring, at the final visit, the employees tried to give her a ring that looked like her own, but in fact, was not hers.

“Are you ready for this?? I make my way to the store only to find that the ring is…. (you guessed it) NOT MINE,” she wrote. “Not only is the ring not mine, but it is the exact same ring that I went to pickup the first time, only now its engraved…!!”

Darshae East alleged that not only had her engagement ring been taken, but her mother’s LeVian diamond ring had been too.

“To top this all off, the day I dropped off my ring, July 2nd, 2018, I also dropped off my mom’s $ 4,000 chocolate Levian diamond ring. We haven’t received that ring back either,” she wrote.

According to Darshae East, instead of returning her original ring, a representative from the jeweler called and offered her the cost of the ring, plus an additional $ 650, which she called “absolutely not enough.”

She added, “In my opinion, there is a way to rectify any and every situation. Kay Jewelers has failed miserably to do so. This is NOT OKAY. And they keep insisting that the rings were NOT stolen!! SO where are they!?!?!!?! What really happened?!?!?!”

Corinne Olympios’ Lawyers: ‘Our Own Investigation Will Continue into Bachelor in Paradise Sex Scandal

The Bachelor in Paradise controversy is far from over if you ask Corinne Olympios‘ legal team.

Shortly after Warner Bros. released a statement Tuesday announcing that an investigation had produced no evidence of sexual misconduct on the show’s set last week, an attorney for the 25-year-old business owner and former Bachelor contestant has confirmed she will continue to pursue the allegations.

“It needs to be made clear that production of Bachelor in Paradise was shut down because of multiple complaints received from BiP producers and crew member on the set,” Olympios’ attorney Martin Singer tells PEOPLE in a statement. “It was not shut down due to an complaint filed by Corinne against anyone.”

The statement continues, “It comes as no surprise that Warner Bros., as a result of its own internal investigation, would state that no wrong doing had occurred. Our own investigation will continue based on multiple new witnesses coming forward revealing what they saw and heard.”

On Tuesday, 10 days after announcing production had officially been halted, Warner Bros. confirmed that filming will soon resume.

“As we previously stated, we recently became aware of allegations regarding an incident on the set of Bachelor in Paradise in Mexico. We take all such allegations seriously. The safety, security and well-being of the cast and crew is our number one concern, and we suspended filming so that the allegations could be investigated immediately and thoroughly. Our internal investigation, conducted with the assistance of an outside law firm, has now been completed. Out of respect for the privacy interests of those involved, we do not intend to release the videotape of the incident. We can say, however, that the tape does not support any charge of misconduct by a cast member. Nor does the tape show, contrary to many press reports, that the safety of any cast member was ever in jeopardy.  Production on this season of Bachelor in Paradise will be resuming, and we plan to implement certain changes to the show’s policies and procedures to enhance and further ensure the safety and security of all participants.”

ABC confirmed the news with its own statement to PEOPLE on Tuesday: “We appreciate the swift and complete investigation by Warner Bros. into allegations of misconduct on the set of Bachelor in Paradise. Given their results, the series will resume production and will air this summer on ABC.”

PEOPLE sources previously confirmed season 4 production was suspended after a producer raised concerns about an alleged sexual encounter between contestants DeMario Jackson and Olympios, both of whom had reportedly been drinking heavily all day.

Bachelor in Paradise will return later this summer on ABC.

Infamous Fyre Festival Under FBI Investigation For Fraud

The disaster known as Fyre Festival has been surrounded by controversy for basically the entirety of its short existence. Now, the music festival intended to take place over two weekends in the Bahamas this spring is reportedly the subject of an FBI investigation.

The FBI has launched a criminal investigation into the infamous festival, looking at “possible mail, wire and securities fraud” committed by parent company Fyre Media in relation to the festival, The New York Times reports.

According to the outlet, “The investigation is being conducted by the United States attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York and the F.B.I.; it is being overseen by a prosecutor assigned to the complex frauds and cybercrime unit.”

Billy McFarland, one of the festival co-founders, did not comment on specific allegations to The Times, but did apologize for the failed event.

“I’m committed to, and working actively to, find a way to make this right, not just for investors but for those who planned to attend,” he told the outlet.

A lawyer for McFarland’s co-founder, rapper Ja Rule, told the paper he “would never participate in anything fraudulent; it’s simply not in his DNA.”

A representative for the FBI declined to provide a comment to the paper, but HuffPost has reached out and will update this post accordingly. A representative for the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment to HuffPost.

The investigation comes after numerous lawsuits have been filed against Fyre, McFarland and Ja Rule since the end of April.

Festivalgoers paid between $ 5,000 and $ 250,000 per ticket to attend the festival, which was advertised as a luxurious island getaway. Attendees were promised a glamorous event, complete with gourmet food and posh accommodations, but as photos and personal accounts on social media showed, the organizers did not deliver

The festival was ultimately canceled, with organizers placing blame on multiple factors, including the weather.

One concertgoer, named Daniel Jung, filed a $ 100 million proposed class-action lawsuit against festival organizers earlier this month, claiming a “lack of adequate food, water, shelter, and medical care created a dangerous and panicked situation among attendees — suddenly finding themselves stranded on a remote island without basic provisions ― that was closer to ‘The Hunger Games’ or ‘Lord of the Flies’ than Coachella.”

Another lawsuit, filed by National Event Services (which was hired to provide medical services during the festival), claimed the accommodations at the festival were “uninhabitable, including bug infestation, bloodstained mattresses, and no air conditioning.”

At this point, there have been at least seven lawsuits filed against Fyre and its organizers.

Stephen Colbert To Face FCC Investigation Over ‘Homophobic’ Donald Trump Joke

Stephen Colbert pissed off lots of people this week with a controversial rant against President Donald Trump on “The Late Show” and now he might have to pay for it ― literally.

Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai revealed that the agency would investigate the comedian’s reference to Trump on Monday’s show as Russian President Vladamir Putin’s “cock holster.” Many called the comment “homophobic.”

“I have had a chance to see the clip now and so, as we get complaints, and we’ve gotten a number of them, we are going to take the facts that we find and we are going to apply the law as it’s been set out by the Supreme Court and other courts and we’ll take the appropriate action,” Pai said on The Rich Zeoli Show on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT on Friday.

Pai added the FCC would follow the standard operating procedures and “make sure we evaluate what the facts are and apply the law fairly and fully.”

Colbert’s fiery two-minute routine, titled “Stephen says everything journalists wish they could,” included jokes about Trump’s tiny hands and missing tax returns. But it was the “cock holster” line that drew the most ire and subsequently inspired a #FireColbert hashtag on Twitter.

The late night show host responded to the controversy on Wednesday night, telling viewers he didn’t regret what he said because he believes the president “can take care of himself.” But Colbert did note if he were to do it again, he would “change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be.”

Addressing the claims of homophobia, he added, “I just want to say for the record, life is short, and anyone who expresses their love for another person, in their own way, is to me, an American hero.”

Variety reported that Pai’s response to Colbert’s monologue is “surprising” as “’The Late Show’ airs outside the FCC’s long-established ‘safe harbor’ time frame of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. in which the commission has the authority to police allegations of indecent and obscene material on the airwaves.”

Pai told The Rich Zeoli Show that if the commission finds Colbert violated FCC regulations he would most likely face a fine.

Still, Colbert probably isn’t sweating the investigation too much. “The Late Show” drew its best ratings on Thursday night since its premiere week in 2015.

Duff and the former hockey player wed in 2010. They officially divorced in 2016 after separating in 2014.

Which Stars Had the Most Fashion Collaborations in 2015? An In-Depth Investigation

When we started looking back at the biggest and best style moments of 2015, one thing stood out: Pretty much everyone had a collaboration. (Here’s where you imagine Oprah yelling “You get a collab! You get a collab! YOU get a collab!”) But some celebs were on a whole other level when it came to their partnerships. So much so that we felt it was our duty to round up the most sought-after celebrity collaborators of the year, and you’ll never believe who came out on top (Okay, fine, you totally will).

Kendall and KylieMatt Baron/Getty

Note: We had to set some parameters here. We only included collaborations with fashion and beauty brands that were active and/or announced in 2015, as well as the celebrities’ own brands when applicable. If the celeb is the face or ambassador of a brand but didn’t design something specifically for them, that doesn’t count. Also, although we love and respect Kendall and Kylie Jenner as individuals, many of their partnerships include them as a duo, so we counted them as one. Phew!

Celeb collaboration graphic 2015Jenners, Port and King: Getty; Chung and Olivia: S

And the winner is…Kendall and Kylie Jenner! Together, these two stylish sisters have clothing collaborations with Topshop, PacSun and Forever New (in Australia) as well as a shoe line that they announced this year. Kendall also has a lipstick with Estee Lauder (she is also the face of the brand), while Kylie has her Hair Kouture extension line with Bellami and, of course, Lip Kit by Kylie, which sold out in minutes…twice.

First look at Kendall + Kylie for @topshop holiday. The collection is available this Friday!

A photo posted by King Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Olivia Palermo also had an impressive showing this year. The fashion plate acts as Ciaté London’s creative director, has a jewelry collection with BaubleBar, a line of sunglasses with Westward Leaning and a shoe collection with Aquazzura (technically late 2014, but we’ll count it). Lastly, she announced in October that she’ll be teaming up with Nordstrom for a collection slated to hit stores in February 2016.

Whitney Port had a big year — from that whole getting married thing to her four collaborations. As you know from The City, Port has her clothing line Whitney Eve (which also teamed up with FabFitFun this year — it’s a collab within a collab!). Plus, she has a partnership with Wella hair care, a line for QVC and designed a charitable tank top for that helps send children to school.

Jaime King, who gave birth to her second child this year, was all about the motherhood-themed collaborations. She had a collection with A Pea in the Pod, a children’s line with Sapling Kids and “mother-and-child-inspired” jewelry with Juno Lucia. Finally, revealed just last week that she’s launching her first makeup line with ColourPop.

Jamie Chung rounds out our list with three big team-ups, with Havaianas, Make Up For Ever and Sachi jewelry. We have to give her a special shoutout though, because she’s also worked with everyone from Ralph Lauren to Fossil to Pandora jewelry this year in less official roles.

Which celebrity designer is your favorite? Who would you like to see team up next? Let us know in the comments!

Duggar Family Reportedly Under New Investigation By Arkansas Department Of Human Services

Josh Duggar recently confessed to molesting five minor girls when he was a teenager, and now In Touch reports the Duggar family is currently under investigation by the Arkansas Department of Human Services.

The magazine reports that on May 27, the Washington County Department of Human Services was called to investigate at the family’s home. When the Duggars refused to cooperate, the DHS representative called 911 to request police assistance, explaining they were prevented from seeing the child they were concerned about, according to a transcript of the emergency call obtained by In Touch.

It’s not clear what provoked the investigation since DHS records are not available to the public. “All child maltreatment investigations in Arkansas are confidential by law,” DHS director of communications Amy Webb told In Touch, adding they could neither confirm nor deny they were involved with investigating any specific family.

This isn’t the first time the Duggars have been uncooperative with the authorities or DHS. According to a 2006 police report, Jim Bob Duggar refused to bring his 18-year-old son Josh in to be interviewed by the police, and in 2007, Josh hired a lawyer and sued the DHS, but the contents of that lawsuit have been sealed.

Since In Touch first broke the story that Josh had been investigated for child molestation, his parents also admitted to keeping the matter from police, and in an interview with Megyn Kelly, they revealed he confessed to molesting his sisters three times before they got him any sort of “help.” Additionally, Josh’s sisters Jill and Jessa broke their silence and confirmed they were two of their brother’s five victims.

TLC told The Huffington Post they had “no comment,” while request for comment from the Duggars has yet to be returned. (Since the scandal broke, the family has disabled their media request page by redirecting visitors to an empty page. However, the media request tool still exists here and is functioning).

Joan Rivers Death Investigation Says Clinic Made Multiple Errors During Medical Procedure

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A New York City clinic where Joan Rivers suffered a fatal complication during a medical procedure made several errors, including failing to keep proper medication records and snapping cellphone photos of her while she was unconscious, state health investigators said Monday.

Rivers, who was 81, died Sept. 4. New York City’s medical examiner found she died of brain damage due to lack of oxygen after she stopped breathing during an endoscopy days earlier.

A report released by the state Department of Health on Monday cited Yorkville Endoscopy for numerous deficiencies related to the Rivers case, although negligence is not alleged. The comedian’s death was classified as a therapeutic complication.

As a result of the state investigation, the federal Department of Health and Human Services has given Yorkville Endoscopy until Jan. 7 to correct deficiencies to avoid losing Medicare accreditation.

In a statement to NBC News on Monday, Yorkville said it has submitted a plan to state and federal accreditation agencies addressing all issues raised. It said the physicians referenced in the report no longer provide services there.

The state report said the Manhattan clinic “failed to identify deteriorating vital signs and provide timely intervention” in Rivers’ case.

Investigators found conflicting information in Rivers’ medical records regarding the amount of the sedation drug Propofol she was administered and about the time resuscitation was initiated. They also faulted the clinic for allowing a surgeon who was not a member of the medical staff to perform two nose and throat scoping procedures.

Investigators also noted that a staff member took cellphone photos of Rivers and a surgeon while she was under anesthesia without her consent and in violation of the facility’s cellphone policy.

The Death of Meriwether Lewis: A Historic Crime Scene Investigation

The Death of Meriwether Lewis: A Historic Crime Scene Investigation

Even after more than two centuries, mystery continues to surround Meriwether Lewis’s death—did the famous explorer commit suicide or was he murdered? Recently revealed truths and deconstructed myths are woven together in this fascinating account to form an unforgettable tale of political corruption, assassins, forged documents, and skeletal remains. New research implicating General James Wilkinson—commanding general of the U.S. Army and coconspirator of Aaron Burr—as the assassin is thoroughly discussed, while riveting testimony from 13 leading experts in wound ballistics, forensic anthropology, suicide psychology, grave-site exhumation, and handwriting analysis offers new insight into what Lewis’s exhumed remains might reveal. The new evidence not only destroys the foundation of suicide arguments by proving the primary evidence is a forgery, it also proves the Indian Agent escorting Lewis lied about his activities on the day of Lewis’s death. The book also contains evidence of a previously unknown plot by Aaron Burr to seize New Orleans and invade Mexico in 1809, a repeat of his 1806 plot. It explains why Lewis suddenly changed his plans to travel to Washington, DC, by boat, and instead chose to go overland on the Natchez Trace, where he met his untimely death on October 11, 1809, at age 35.

Philip Seymour Hoffman Investigation Suspect Had Actor’s Phone Number, Authorities Say

NEW YORK (AP) — At least one of four people arrested during an investigation of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman’s suspected fatal heroin overdose had the actor’s cellphone number, two law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

Investigators zeroed in on the four after a tipster, responding to publicity about Hoffman’s death, told police he had seen Hoffman at the lower Manhattan apartment building where they were arrested on Tuesday and he believed that’s where Hoffman got the heroin, the officials said. In searches of two apartments in the building, police found hundreds of packets of heroin in one of them, according to a criminal complaint. But prosecutors declined to pursue charges against one of the four, saying there was no evidence that he had control of the drugs or the apartment in which they were found, and two of the others were charged only with a misdemeanor charge of possessing cocaine, not heroin. Only one, jazz musician Robert Vineberg, was facing a felony charge of heroin possession with intent to sell.

Lawyers for the three people charged vigorously denied their clients had any role in Hoffman’s death and suggested they were being swept up in a maelstrom of attention surrounding the actor’s demise.

“This case and the charges against Mr. Vineberg have absolutely nothing to do with the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. … We’re hoping the (district attorney) will not use Mr. Vineberg as a scapegoat,” said his lawyer, Edward Kratt, who declined to say whether Vineberg knew Hoffman.

The arrests came two days into the high-profile case, reflecting the attention and urgency it has attracted. All three of the people charged were indicted within a day after their arrests, a fairly unusual step, and were being held without bail. The two charged with cocaine possession, Juliana Luchkiw and Max Rosenblum, a couple who are neighbors of Vineberg’s, were visibly dismayed when a judge denied them bail, though their lawyers hoped to revisit the issue Thursday.

“She’s not a drug dealer. She’s a college student,” attending a design school, said Luchkiw’s lawyer, Stephen Turano.

Rosenblum’s lawyer, Daniel Hochheiser, said his client “has nothing to do with Philip Seymour Hoffman.”

Luchkiw and Rosenbaum had two bags of cocaine, while investigators found about 300 packets of heroin, a bag of cocaine and about $ 1,200 in cash in Vineberg’s apartment, according to criminal complaints.

Investigators have determined that the “Capote” star made six ATM transactions for a total of $ 1,200 inside a supermarket near his home the day before his death, law enforcement officials have said. Investigators are examining a computer and two iPads found at the scene for clues and recovered syringes, a charred spoon and various prescription medications, including a blood pressure drug and a muscle relaxant, law enforcement officials have said.

Police learned from phone records that one of the suspects had Hoffman’s number, strengthening the theory that they may have supplied him with drugs, the law enforcement officials said. The officials, who weren’t authorized to speak about evidence in the ongoing investigation of the death and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, didn’t identify which of the suspects had the number.

Some of the packets found in Hoffman’s apartment were variously stamped with the ace of hearts and others with the ace of spades. Those found in the building where the arrests occurred had different brand names, including Black List and Panda, the officials said.

Police were waiting for a cause of death for the Oscar-winning actor from the medical examiner’s office, which said on Wednesday that more tests were needed.

There was no timetable for Hoffman’s autopsy to be finished, said medical examiner’s office spokeswoman Julie Bolcer, who declined to discuss the pending tests. Toxicology and tissue tests are typically done in such cases.

Hoffman, 46, was found dead Sunday with a needle in his arm, and tests found heroin in samples from at least 50 packets in his apartment in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, law enforcement officials have said.

Courts have found that under state law drug dealers can’t be held liable for customers’ deaths.

A 1972 state appellate division case found a dealer can’t be found guilty of manslaughter or criminally negligent homicide for selling heroin and syringes to a customer who later dies because, the court ruled, legislation enhancing punishment for drug crimes didn’t redefine homicide to include the sale of an illicit drug that results in death.

And holding a drug dealer criminally liable for a customer’s overdose death could prove difficult for the district attorney’s office, said James Cohen, a Fordham University School of Law professor who runs a clinic that represents federal criminal defendants.

“It’s not just enough that you know, if you will, theoretically or academically, that heroin could kill,” he said.

Former police detective Scott Prendergast, who worked on the high-profile investigation into the 1996 heroin overdose death of Jonathan Melvoin, a keyboard player touring with the rock band Smashing Pumpkins, said it’s not uncommon for investigators to track down dealers following suspected overdose deaths especially when the drugs are stamped with telling names.

A private funeral for relatives and close friends of Hoffman is set for Friday, and a larger memorial service will be held later this month, his publicist Karen Samfilippo said.

On Wednesday night, Broadway theaters dimmed their lights in memory of the Tony Award-nominated actor, and members of the theater community held a candlelight vigil for him.
