Alec Baldwin Says ‘SNL’ Invited Donald Trump to Return

President Donald Trump declined an invitation to return to “Saturday Night Live” this season, according to Alec Baldwin. In an appearance Wednesday on Ellen DeGeneres’ daytime talk show, Baldwin, who impersonates Trump on the NBC late-night series, said that Trump was asked to appear on the Feb. 11 episode that Baldwin hosted. “When we did… Read more »

All the Scoop on the Big D.C. Dinner President Trump Is Boycotting — AND the Other One He’s Not Invited to

This time last year, President Obama joked about the election, bid the Washington press adieu, and finally dropped the mic at his last White House Correspondents Dinner in office. Too bad nothing of major political significance has gone down since then and nobody will have anything to talk about this year, right?

Just kidding! American politics are utter chaos right now! That can be distressing to a lot of people on a day-to-day basis, but this weekend, there’s an opportunity for you to try to just enjoy it: The annual mutual roasting of the Washington media and the politicians they cover has rolled around once again. Here are all the details about where to watch and what you’ll see at this year’s “nerd prom” — and it should be an interesting one.

When is the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and how can I watch it?

The White House Correspondents’ Association’s annual dinner takes place this Saturday, April 29, held in the ballroom at the Washington Hilton Hotel. The event will stream live on C-SPAN beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT.

Who is delivering the keynote?

The Daily Show correspondent Hasan Minhaj will drop political zingers as this year’s speaker, a role that was filled in 2016 by Larry Wilmore. Minhaj joined the satirical news program during Jon Stewart’s tenure as host, and reports primarily on religious and Muslim issues. “Hasan’s smarts, big heart, and passion for press freedom make him the perfect fit for our event, which will be focused on the First Amendment and the importance of a robust and independent media,” White House Correspondents’ Association president Jeff Mason said in a statement. If you’re not familiar with Minhaj and want a preview of his comedy before the big night, check out some of his best Daily Show segments here.

Who will be there?

The big story here is who will not be there: Donald Trump, who has made no secret of his loathing for the news media — or the “enemy of the American people,” as he likes to call it — has said he will not attend the event, which celebrates the free press and honors the First Amendment. The President isn’t the only big name who’ll be sitting this one out, either; the normally star-studded affair is expected to be much more low-key this year, and many media outlets are extending their invitations to journalists rather than celebrities. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be any stars in attendance. We do know Alyssa Milano, Chad Lowe, Matt Walsh, Elvis Costello, and Billy Bob Thornton will be there.

But wait! If you’re bummed about the party’s lack of a POTUS as well as its celebrity shortage, there might be a solution for both losses! Alec Baldwin “wouldn’t say  not lobbying” to perform his impression of the President and stand in for Trump at the dinner. Wouldn’t that be tremendous?

Why won’t Trump be there?

“I am not a hypocrite, and I haven’t been treated properly, and that’s okay, that’s fine,” he explained on Fox and Friends soon after he announced he would skip the dinner. Instead of schmoozing with the press, he’ll spend Saturday — which, in a remarkable coincidence, happens to be his 100th day in office — “holding a BIG rally in Pennsylvania,” he tweeted.

Has the President ever skipped it before?

Yes, but it’s been 36 years since the Commander-in-Chief sat one out. Trump will be the first POTUS to skip the dinner since Ronald Reagan, who missed it once, in 1981, because he was recovering from an assassination attempt — but he did call into the event to deliver remarks from the hospital. Before Reagan, Jimmy Carter did not attend in 1980 or 1978, and Richard Nixon opted out in 1974 and 1972.

This whole thing sounds super lame. What else can I watch that night instead?

Funny you should ask! Late-night maverick Samantha Bee will be hosting the first annual Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington that very same night. The event will air as a special episode of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee at 10:00 p.m. ET on TBS, and stream on Twitter at 11:00 p.m. ET/8:00 pm PT, with a red carpet stream beginning two hours earlier.  “We’re throwing a party to toast the free press — while we still have one,” Bee says in the promo video. Raise a glass!

Why I Invited Marc Maron to Speak at Princeton University

Several months ago, I decided to invite the comedian Marc Maron, host of the popular podcast WTF and the star of the television show Maron, to speak at Princeton University. The popular stand-up comedian might not be the most predictable choice to deliver a lecture in our public event series. When I tweeted out that he will be speaking in McCosh 50, the same room where Albert Einstein delivered lectures about the Theory of Relativity, Maron himself seemed a little surprised, tweeting back: “Cool. No Pressure Man.” “Thanks for telling me that guy who’s running the lecture, oh man, not a lot of pressure,” he said on the October 5 podcast.

The truth is that, in my mind Maron, is a terrific and important figure who students and faculty should hear. The idea of inviting him to the university occurred to me before he announced that he was going to interview the president of the United States, a show that greatly bolstered his standing.

Besides the fact that stand-up comedy often provides some of the most insightful commentary about American culture, Maron is living proof of the great potential in modern communications technology. We have all heard the standard litany of complaints about what has resulted from the modern media world: the voices in broadcasting are increasingly shrill, quality control seems to have virtually disappeared along with tight production and editorial standards, and the hyper-fragmentation of broadcasting has made it difficult for any single voice to gain a sizable audience.

Yet since first airing in 2009, WTF has demonstrated that new technology has created important space for innovation.

Through his podcast, Maron has shown how the medium offers a type environment for conversation and discussion that was not always possible in the formal setting of traditional television and radio broadcasting. By literally conducting the interviews in his garage, Maron has convinced a huge number of guests — ranging from comedians like Robin Williams to public figures such as President Obama — to open up about their personal lives and their professional experiences in ways that have been absolutely riveting to listeners. The ease of contemporary technology helped him to create a “studio” space in which Maron nurtures a style of informal and intimate conversation that shatters the walls usually separating the listener from the show. As he told The New Yorker, “Guests sit within a history of me, artifacts from different times of my life.” Maron likens his interviews to the “ongoing conversations” that his grandfather (Grandpa Jack) had with the locals at a hardware store where he worked.

Without the large infrastructure of a network around him, podcasting also gives Maron the flexibility to move about and to interview a wide variety of guests, some of whom have proven to be extraordinarily interesting (such as a series of conversations with comedians about “borrowing” or stealing material from each other) that might otherwise not have found support in traditional broadcasting outlets. Indeed, he was able to follow his show with President Obama by interviewing comedians like Rich Vos.

Podcasts are also attracting younger listeners who are often turned off and tuned out to the traditional networks. Studies have shown that podcast audiences lean toward younger listeners, which creates an opportunity to provide quality shows to generations of Americans who are otherwise not listening. One can imagine how hosts interested in politics might take the Maron model to over political news in ways that attract disenchanted youth to this subject matter.

Part of the reason that they can do this is because podcasts embody the trend of narrowcasting that began back in the 1970s when the networks started to lose their monopoly. When shows can thrive within a certain niche and only have to appeal to certain audiences, they have the ability to refine their stylistic approach and substantive foci rather than feeling the need to do a little of everything but nothing with much depth.

Podcasts open up the constraints of time in a way that facilitates more open-ended and in-depth conversations. Podcasts can vary greatly in length. The host does not have to feel the pressure of finishing within a certain time frame imposed by commercials and radio or television airspace. The extra time, as well as the ability to go shorter, can liberate conversations to move in all sorts of directions when the host and producer don’t have to keep their eye on the clock.

So inviting Marc Maron was actually a no-brainer. Maron has done something truly spectacular with this new technological form. For those who constantly lament what each new innovation brings, they should download his app and listen to some of the exciting directions the media might take. Today, I’ll be enjoying what he has to say the old-fashioned way, sitting in my seat for his lecture right here at Princeton.

Twelve-year-old Sadie loves helping her mom with her wedding planning business, and with Sadie’s mad organizational skills, she’s a natural! That’s why it’s so devastating when her mother fires her after a Little Mermaid themed wedding goes awry. Enter Sadie’s best friends: sporty Vi, ace student Lauren, and boy-crazy Becca. The girls decide that in order to get Sadie’s mom to reconsider, they have to make her see how amazing Sadie is at party planning. Except no one’s gonna hire a twelve-year-old to plan a wedding. A birthday party, though? Definite possibility. Before long, RSVPyour one-stop shop for the most creative parties in townis born. Of course, Sadie can’t wait to prove herself to her mom, but the other girls also have their reasons for enlisting: Vi has her eye on the perfect gift for her hardworking dad, and Becca’s all aflush at the thought of connecting with Ryan, the new Irish cutie in town. And though Lauren thinks she’s too busy with summer studies to officially join, she’s willing to help out in any way she can. But in this particular party-planning business, nothing goes according to plan! Sadie’s mom is a perpetual no-show, Vi’s archrival is dead set on ruining her summer, Becca can’t seem to get Ryan to glance in her direction, and Lauren keeps choosing studying over her friends. Is the girls’ friendship strong enough to survive a business? Or does RSVP spell the end of these BFFs?

Bill Murray Is Cordially Invited To Washington, D.C., For A Groundhog Day Party

How hard could it be to get Bill Murray to show up to at an annual Groundhog Day celebration in the nation’s capital? Aaron DeNu says that, even with short notice, “I think we have a chance.”

DeNu launched D.C.’s now-annual tribute to the soothsaying animal two years ago. He’s hoping this year’s event will entice Murray, who starred in the classic, and profound, “Groundhog Day,” to attend.

“I think one in 100,” he tells HuffPost, putting the odds that high because Murray is out promoting a new film — “The Monuments Men” — for which he’s been undertaking some unorthodox publicity stunts, and because an exhibition relating to the movie will be opening at the Smithsonian on Feb. 7, a mere five days after the big day itself.

DeNu has convinced a handful of local businesses to donate goods and services which would make Murray’s visit more appealing: a quirky boutique hotel has offered to put him up and a bookstore/restaurant frequented by the president has offered to feed him.

In 2011 when DeNu launched the event, he originally had a more feral star in mind: a live groundhog, which he planned to call Potomac Phil. DeNu thought he’d tell people that Potomac Phil is a brother of Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil; that the two are both genetically blessed weather-rodents.

That plan eventually petered out. DeNu contacted various groups he thought might have a spare to lend out, and learned that groundhogs may be common, but this time of year they are also mostly hibernating. A stuffed groundhog, purchased from a D.C. vintage store — yet also said to be able to see its shadow, and thus to adjudge the sort of winter Washington will enjoy — has stood in a live animal’s place.

Regarding this endeavor, while DeNu doesn’t mark his chances of luring Murray as especially promising, “I’m going to keep at it,” he says. “As Bill Murray’s best friend said, ‘Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!‘”

The attempts, thus far, have mainly entailed looking for the 1-800 number on which Murray is said to check messages. GQ reported in 2010 that the actor will return calls for propositions he finds “interesting.”

Easy enough, except this time the problem is that DeNu doesn’t know, specifically, what 1-800 number to call.

“So, I’ve been on a quest to find that number,” he says. “Along the way, I’ve left some awkward messages on different 1-800 numbers that I believed to be his. I spoke into the AT&T toll free line for 30 minutes searching different names. Using search criteria such as names of characters Bill Murray has portrayed in film. And I’ve reached out to an accountant in New York that is rumored to be in contact with him. I try every day, but it seems like I’m having the same day over and over again.”

Still, it could be so easy for Murray to help DeNu make things right. “Bill can email me at DupontFestival@gmail.com,” he says, “and if he can be in Dupont Circle Park on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 a.m. it would be beautiful.”
