A Deadly Trap? After Journalist Reportedly Killed in Consulate, Shocked Friends Vow to Fight for Justice

As increasingly horrific reports continue to emerge about the fate of dissident Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi, shocked friends of the missing Washington Post columnist are vowing to push for justice on his behalf.

“We’re fighting like hell,” Karen Attiah, Khashoggi’s editor at the Post, tells PEOPLE. “Like absolute hell.”

The 60-year old Khashoggi, a Saudi native who had been living in self-imposed exile in Virginia, vanished on Oct. 2 after walking into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

He reportedly went there to obtain divorce papers so that he could marry his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz. But Turkish authorities believe that instead of being handed the promised papers, Khashoggi was lured there to be tortured, killed and even dismembered inside the consulate by a hit squad flown in from Riyadh, the Saudi capital.

A well-known journalist in his home country, Khashoggi — a one-time insider with the ruling House of Saud — had grown increasingly critical of the policies imposed by the country’s 33-year-old de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, also known as MBS.

Khashoggi fell afoul of Saudi authorities, American intelligence sources tell PEOPLE. He fled to Virginia in 2017.

“He knew he was in danger,” says David Ignatius, Khashoggi’s friend and Post colleague. “He felt he should not go back to Saudi Arabia.”

• For more on the life and sudden disappearance of writer Jamal Khashoggi, subscribe now to PEOPLE or pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday.

In the United States, Khashoggi soon took up a column for the Post, where he continued to criticize bin Salman.

He was aware that his work was being translated and read overseas, colleagues say, and that his views provoked ire in some royal quarters. “He was often scared,” Ignatius says. “He was worried.”

Attiah says Khashoggi was “excited” and “proud” to have the platform of the Post.

“Still,” she tells PEOPLE, “it was painful for him to have to write about the repression in his country. He said Saudi Arabia was always harsh, but never like this.”

An impending marriage was enough to send the usually wary Khashoggi — whom friends describe as “lonely” — inside Saudi territory abroad, to the consulate in Istanbul.

What happened after he entered the building more than two weeks ago is still the subject of official dispute, though Turkish authorities, quoted anonymously in various news articles, have described a grisly end orchestrated by the Saudi government, apparently in retribution for Khashoggi’s open criticism.

Saudi authorities, meanwhile, previously denied any wrongdoing and said that Khashoggi had left the consulate that day unharmed.

It remains unclear if the crown prince had any direct knowledge of what happened to him, though some sources have reportedly said it would be unlikely he would have been unaware given his position.

Under international scrutiny and amid further damning news reports, sources told CNN and other outlets this week that Saudi Arabia was possibly preparing to concede that he had been killed in an interrogation or planned abduction gone wrong.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

The case has cast a harsh light on the U.S.’s years-long, if controversial, support of Saudi Arabia. Various politicians, including those in the Trump administration, have sounded their concern. (Khashoggi was a legal U.S. resident.)

While officials scramble to address what has become an international crisis, the missing man’s friends and colleagues agonize over his fate — and vow to find answers.

“I hope that this story turns out to have a better outcome, but with this much time and no answers, it seems increasingly unlikely that he is alive,” Attiah says. “I hope I’m wrong.”

Says Ignatius: “I’m hoping and praying, but more and more it’s looking like he was killed and in a horrible way.”

Khashoggi’s Post colleagues remember a tall man who was amiable and engaging, with a “sweet moon face” and a “gentle” spirit.

On his values, though, he could be stubborn.

“He had an inability compromise,” Ignatius says. “He believed in telling the truth. Some people don’t know how to compromise. He was one of them.”

In the wake of his vanishing and reported death, Attiah says, she is re-reading Khashoggi’s columns that she herself edited.

“He put himself in the feelings of other prisoners sitting in cells,” she says. “Now that we’re all imagining what was going through Jamal’s mind, I wonder: Did he overestimate how safe he was?”

Attiah keeps going back to the day Khashoggi walked into the consulate and her first inkling that something wasn’t right.

“That morning I was brushing my teeth and I thought, ‘I haven’t talked to Jamal in a while,’ ” she recalls.

She senses now that she will never talk to Khashoggi again.

“The truth is Jamal is not here,” Attiah tells PEOPLE. “The truth is he went into the embassy and never came out.”

It’s a devastating reality — and a motivating one. The Post has published excerpts from some of Khashoggi’s columns on a tribute page to the missing writer.

“If anything, this has energized me to continue this mission,” Attiah says. “Whoever did this, they can’t kill a mission.”

Why Justice League Ditched Superman’s Black Costume

Despite teases ahead of Justice League’s release, Superman doesn’t wear a black suit in the film, and costume designer Michael Wilkinson has revealed why that is.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Wilkinson said the idea of including the black suit in Justice League fascinated the filmmakers. In the Death and Return of Superman story, the superhero sports a black outfit after being resurrected, and this is the direction Zack Snyder and the rest of the creative team wanted to go with at first.

“When we were prepping Justice League, at first it seemed that it might be a logical choice for the look of Superman when he’s resurrected,” Wilkinson said. “Zack is extremely respectful and passionate about the depiction of Superman in comic books and graphic novels, and traditionally when he is resurrected, he is in the black suit.”

Opinion: The Justice League Comics Need Saving

Regardless of the critical reception to the Justice League movie, the team is currently in the midst of its biggest ever multimedia push. Now even the most causal of moviegoers are familiar with characters like Cyborg and Aquaman and concepts like Mother Boxes and the Speed Force. So with the Justice League becoming such a big deal in the Hollywood realm, why does it seem like the team has become such an afterthought in DC’s comics?

In general, the quality of DC’s comic book line has improved drastically since the start of the DC Rebirth relaunch last year. Rebirth reinvigorated all sorts of characters and franchises. Greg Rucka, Liam Sharp and Nicola Scott greatly elevated Wonder Woman. Tom King and his artists are crafting what has already become one of my favorite Batman runs of all time. Everyone from Green Arrow to Flash to Aquaman is in a drastically better place thanks to Rebirth. That’s to say nothing of all the fun, unexpected ways DC’s publishing line has grown in other areas, from the Hanna Barbera line to Gerard Way’s Young Animal imprint to the upcoming “New Age of DC Heroes” line.

Victoria Justice Says New Meme Is ‘Dredging Up Non-Existent Drama’

I think we ALL know about the Victoria Justice/Ariana Grande meme, but just in case you don’t, here’s a refresher.

Last week, an intrepid Twitter user unearthed an old video of Victoria Justice and Ariana Grande from their time on the Nickelodeon show “Victorious.” In the clip, actress Elizabeth Gillies heaps praise upon Grande for her “beautiful” singing voice, at which point Justice adds, “I think we ALL sing.”

The video became an instant sensation, sparking a viral meme in honor of Justice’s comment.

You may have thought the meme was just a bit of lighthearted fun, but Justice feels differently. The actress addressed the hubbub on Twitter Friday, saying the meme was “dredging up” old rumors.

“I think we ALL have better things 2 do than dredging up 7 yr old non-existent drama,” Justice wrote. “That said, I’m kind of excited to finally be a meme.”

We’re glad to see Justice has a sense of humor about the whole thing, especially since her response seems to have only added fuel to the fire. Fans replied to her tweet with their own hilarious versions of the meme:

No word yet from Grande about the controversy, but we can wager a guess as to how she’s feeling about all this.

Official ‘Justice League’ Trailer Shows Off Wonder Woman, Her Sidekicks

When the planet is under attack, there’s only one group of melancholy heroes to count on ― Wonder Woman and her friends.

The new “Justice League” trailer dropped Saturday, showing audiences what’s to come in D.C.’s cinematic universe. We’ll watch Wonder Woman unite her powers with superheroes including Batman, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg to take on an as-of-yet unknown threat.

“We have to be ready, you, me, the others. There’s an attack coming from far away,” Batman tells Wonder Woman.

“Not coming Bruce,” she replies. “It’s already here.”

The Zack Snyder-directed film will be a major play for D.C. after previous films like “Suicide Squad” and “Batman vs. Superman” were ripped to shreds by critics.

The trailer promises lots of action ― and even more brooding. Oh, and we also find out what Batman’s superpower is! We won’t spoil it for you, though.

In the meantime, get hyped for the official “Wonder Woman” movie, coming to theaters in June.

Rose McGowan Seeking Help From Department Of Justice After Nude Photo Hack

Rose McGowan is among the group of female celebrities who recently had her personal photos leaked online by hackers, and she’s not taking the situation lightly.

Gossip Cop reports nude photos and a sex tape with the actress were published online. Early Sunday morning, McGowan addressed the anonymous hackers on Twitter, calling them “little hacker boys” (though it should be noted the hackers responsible for the recent leak may or may not be men). Her message was loud and clear.

McGowan also told Gossip Cop, “I’m going to go to the Department of Justice.” The Huffington Post has reached out to a representative for the actress for further comment and will update this post accordingly.

Other stars who recently fell victim to online hackers include Amanda Seyfried, Emma Watson and Analeigh Tipton

Watson’s representative responded to the hack, saying, “Photos from a clothes fitting Emma had with a stylist a couple of years ago have been stolen. They are not nude photographs. Lawyers have been instructed and we are not commenting further.”

Tipton’s spokesperson also issued a statement to HuffPost, noting the photos of the “Crazy, Stupid, Love” actress “were obtained illegally and are a tremendous invasion of her privacy. She is cooperating with authorities in an effort to locate the people responsible in the hopes that this never happens to her or anyone else again.”

Justice League #49 Review

Justice League #49 brings the “Darkseid War” saga one step closer to its epic conclusion. This is certainly an eventful issue, as the Justice League and Crime Syndicate come together to stop the all-powerful Mobius from ravaging another world. Gods continue to rise and fall, though the frequency at which Geoff Johns reorganizes the battlefield in this issue diminishes the impact of these twists somewhat.

The weird, back-and-forth, Dragonball Z-esque approach to storytelling is reminiscent of Johns’ work on Green Lantern #20, which also featured a major showdown between good and evil and a plot that saw both sides constantly trying to one-up each other with their displays of power. After nine issues and assorted tie-in issues, it’s enough to wonder what the real focal point of “The Darkseid War” actually is. Why spend so much time building up the battle between Darkseid and the Anti-Monitor if neither villain is the real endgame here? Grail’s reintroduction into the story here feels abrupt (and presumably even more so if you’ve didn’t read the recent Darkseid War Special one-shot).

FDR and Chief Justice Hughes

FDR and Chief Justice Hughes

By the author of acclaimed books on the bitter clashes between Jefferson and Chief Justice Marshall on the shaping of the nation’s constitutional future, and between Lincoln and Chief Justice Taney over slavery, secession, and the presidential war powers. Roosevelt and Chief Justice Hughes’s fight over the New Deal was the most critical struggle between an American president and a chief justice in the twentieth century. The confrontation threatened the New Deal in the middle of the nation’s worst depression. The activist president bombarded the Democratic Congress with a fusillade of legislative remedies that shut down insolvent banks, regulated stocks, imposed industrial codes, rationed agricultural production, and employed a quarter million young men in the Civilian Conservation Corps. But the legislation faced constitutional challenges by a conservative bloc on the Court determined to undercut the president. Chief Justice Hughes often joined the Court’s conservatives to strike down major New Deal legislation. Frustrated, FDR proposed a Court-packing plan. His true purpose was to undermine the ability of the life-tenured Justices to thwart his popular mandate. Hughes proved more than a match for Roosevelt in the ensuing battle. In grudging admiration for Hughes, FDR said that the Chief Justice was the best politician in the country. Despite the defeat of his plan, Roosevelt never lost his confidence and, like Hughes, never ceded leadership. He outmaneuvered isolationist senators, many of whom had opposed his Court-packing plan, to expedite aid to Great Britain as the Allies hovered on the brink of defeat. He then led his country through World War II.

Despite the passage of more than thirty years, two regime shifts, and a contested U.N. intervention, only one former Khmer Rouge official has been successfully tried and sentenced for crimes against humanity in an international court of law to date. It is against this background of war, genocide, and denied justice that Cathy J. Schlund-Vials explores the work of 1.5-generation Cambodian American artists and writers. Drawing on what James Young labels “memory work”-the collected articulation of large-scale human loss-War, Genocide, and Justice investigates the remembrance work of Cambodian American cultural producers through film, memoir, and music. Schlund-Vials includes interviews with artists such as Anida Yoeu Ali, praCh Ly, Sambath Hy, and Socheata Poeuv. Alongside the enduring legacy of the Killing Fields and post-9/11 deportations of Cambodian American youth, artists potently reimagine alternative sites for memorialization, reclamation, and justice. Traversing borders, these artists generate forms of genocidal remembrance that combat amnesic politics and revise citizenship practices in the United States and Cambodia. Engaged in politicized acts of resistance, individually produced and communally consumed, Cambodian American memory work represents a significant and previously unexamined site of Asian American critique.

Bedroom Justice

Bedroom Justice

When there is no Justice in the Bedroom, rarely will there be Justice in the entire relationship. And there is only one logical Justice that could be dished out within the confines of the Bedroom and within the confines of Bedroom Politics. The notable Justice is: Optimum Dose of Sex. In this book, you will see that mere sexual intercourse and ejaculation(s) does not necessarily mean Orgasm. Orgasm is rather an intense feeling of relief with the attendant physical and emotional release and surrender, to the cellular level, of the entire body system. It is the kind of relief and surrender that endures when you feel you are about to explode with ecstasy: when almost all the cells and tissues of your body system indulge in the said surrender and release of heightened sexual energy in exchange for the ensuing ecstatic explosion. And that is called Bedroom Justice – Optimum Dose of Sex/Ecstasy. The steps to achieve this sexual gratification are laid out in the pages of this edition of the book. It is just true that without Bedroom Justice, all logic of a relationship, Domestic Politics and Bedroom Politics will be lost. Any and all factors that may inhibit you from having a perfect dose of sex and sexual gratification are trashed out in the pages of this book. Mr. Justice Raffles

Mr. Justice Raffles

Raffles had vanished from the face of the town, and even I had no conception of his whereabouts until he cabled to me to meet the 7.31 at Charing Cross next night. That was on the Tuesday before the ‘Varsity match, or a full fortnight after his mysterious disappearance. The telegram was from Carlsbad, of all places for Raffles of all men! Of course there was only one thing that could possibly have taken so rare a specimen of physical fitness to any such pernicious spot. But to my horror he emerged from the train, on the Wednesday evening, a cadaverous caricature of the splendid person I had gone to meet. “Not a word, my dear Bunny, till I have bitten British beef!” said he, in tones as hollow as his cheeks. “No, I’m not going to stop to clear my baggage now. You can do that for me to-morrow, Bunny, like a dear good pal.”

Justice Department Probes Possible Price-Fixing In Music Publishing

July 15 (Reuters) – The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating possible pricing coordination among music publishing companies as it reviews the decades-old rules that govern the cost of licensing songs, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Justice Department has sent out requests for documents from Sony Corp’s Sony/ATV Music Publishing and Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Publishing, along with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and Broadcast Music Inc (BMI), the Journal said.

The DoJ is seeking materials related to a wide range of licensing issues, including the two publishers’ efforts to withdraw their rights from ASCAP and BMI’s licensing agreements with Internet radio company Pandora Media Inc, the newspaper said, citing the people. (http://on.wsj.com/Uaeo9W)

The request, formally known as civil investigative demands, are part of the DoJ’s sweeping review of its rate-setting agreements with ASCAP and BMI, the Journal said.

ASCAP, BMI, Universal Music and Sony/ATV did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.

Last month, the DoJ said it was considering changing or scrapping agreements it reached with two music licensing giants more than 70 years ago to freshen them up for the Internet age.

Any dispute over the cost of a license goes to “rate courts,” which are based in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Songwriters use music publishers to promote their works, and to do certain licensing tasks – for example, the licensing of “mechanical” rights, for the sale and distribution of recordings.

Publishers use BMI and ASCAP, both not-for-profit entities, to collectively license works for public performance to major music users like Pandora Media. (Reporting by Supriya Kurane in Bangalore; Editing by Gopakumar Warrier)
