Kenzo Men’s Spring 2019

Humberto Leon and Carol Lim have turned their performance presentations for Kenzo into something of a tradition. Their coed spring show was no exception, with floral suspensions, a brass band and a laser light show transforming the basement of the Maison de la Mutualité conference center into a magic grotto.
Unfortunately, the clothes they showed didn’t live up to the setting. The brand’s aesthetic, once synonymous with jungle prints and Asian references, has skewed increasingly eclectic of late, with kitschy cool designs that reference the designers’ Californian upbringing.
This lineup was ostensibly informed by summer ceremonies: “gatherings of all sorts and the jubilation of rituals, occasions where New-Romantic hedonists meet British wedding goers and all the in-betweens,” the duo said in their show notes.
Perhaps it was the time slot — the last show on the last day of a marathon men’s fashion week in Paris — but it was hard to pinpoint even a trace of that theme, except for the graphic rose pattern that was a recurrent motif.
Rather, the men’s lineup revolved around a sporty silhouette grounded in acid-bright colors and oversized volumes. A vibrant blue suit with extra-large drawstring pants was paired with a trompe-l’oeil T-shirt depicting an open shirt

EXCLUSIVE: Kenzo Taps Karen O to Record Original Song

HEAR MY SONG: First film, now music. Having commissioned leading filmmakers including Gregg Araki and Sean Baker to create short films, Kenzo has tapped singer-songwriter Karen O to record an original song, and writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour to direct the accompanying film.
Titled “Yo! My Saint,” the track will be released on Jan. 12 across more than 50 streaming services including Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Pandora, Deezer and Google Play Music. A companion limited-edition vinyl is to go on sale on Jan. 22 in Kenzo stores and online.
While championing female talent is nothing new for Kenzo creative directors Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, the project marks the first time the label has released an original song. Others brands which have produced music include Burberry, which supports British artists via its Burberry Acoustic initiative, and Kitsuné, which has its own record label.

Kenzo Unveils Dance-Themed Campaign for Move Sneaker

LET’S DANCE: Kenzo is celebrating its Move sneaker with an online campaign featuring dancers from across the world interpreting each shoe color with a different movement.
A global casting call was held to recruit the performers trained in styles including ballet, modern, hip-hop and electro, who appear in photos and videos shot by the Paris-based collective 5fruits, with choreography by the duo I Could Never Be a Dancer and music by Lafawndah.
“When we dance, we’re trying to connect to the present. And when we are connected to the present we confront life itself. I think fashion needs dance to give life to clothing. To connect it to the now,” a male hip-hop dancer called Feroz said in a statement issued by the brand.

Kenzo Taps Three Young Filmmakers for Season Zero Campaign

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: Kenzo’s Carol Lim and Humberto Leon are known for their experimental approach to campaign films.
This season, for the launch of their Kenzo Season Zero collection, the design duo embarked on an adventure with three young filmmakers – Mati Diop, Baptist Penetticobra and Eduardo Williams – whose work they felt encapsulates the theme of the season: “a singular relationship with the world.” Their brief: “How do we inhabit Earth today in 2017?”
Described in a press release from the house as “mixed, expatriated, nomads,” Williams hails from Argentina, Diop is French and Penetticobra is French but L.A.-based.
Williams’ work, “Tzzd,” follows the dream of an elf who nods off in the metro in Buenos Aires, winding through three countries and two continents and moving from cool to warm colors, with locations ranging from a Buenos Aires fruit and vegetable shop to a dark cave.
Diop’s film, “Olympus,” captures her brother, model Gard Diop, bicycling through Paris in moonlight, and Penetticobra’s “Untitled (Juice),” presented in a vertical format, stars Karmesha Clark playing a modern-day, black Mona Lisa rapping about orange juice.
The films can be viewed on international streaming platform lecinemaclub.com, ending Nov. 9.

Kenzo Exec to ‘Further Develop’ Marc Jacobs as CEO

NEW YORK — LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton has charged Kenzo’s chief executive officer Eric Marechalle with leading the turnaround effort at Marc Jacobs International.
He is to leave Kenzo and become ceo of Marc Jacobs International in the third quarter of the year.
This confirms a report in WWD on June 21 that Marechalle would take over from Sebastian Suhl, who is leaving LVMH “to pursue personal interests.”
Marechalle will continue to report to Pierre-Yves Roussel, ceo of LVMH Fashion Group, which spans a host of brands from Givenchy and Céline to Emilio Pucci, along with Kenzo and Marc Jacobs.
Roussel said Marechalle’s “strong experience in brand management” would “give a new impetus” to Marc Jacobs and “further help us develop it, in collaboration with Marc.”
LVMH reported solid business in the first quarter, with chief financial officer Jean-Jacques Guiony flagging the Jacobs business as “probably one of the few negative performances we have in the group.”
Marechalle’s successor at Kenzo will be announced “shortly,” LVMH noted.
WWD reported on May 26 that Suhl would soon exit Marc Jacobs, which he joined in 2014. It is understood he will remain at the management helm through a transition period. His next move could not immediately be learned.

Façade Drops 40th-Anniversary Issue With Kenzo Takada, Pierre et Gilles

STILL GOT IT: Façade magazine, the cult fashion pub of the late-Seventies and early-Eighties, has gotten the band back together again for a special 40th-anniversary edition.
At a launch party at the boutique Colette Thursday, contributors and subjects of the magazine including designer Kenzo Takada, the magazine’s founder Alain Benoist, and the photographers Pierre et Gilles signed copies of the double issue.
Pierre et Gilles — or Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard — rose to fame through their work for the magazine, including portraits of Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger and Iggy Pop.
A series of portraits of the photographers against bubblegum pink and robin’s egg backgrounds occupy the front and back covers of both volumes of the double issue. “We shot the first covers of Façade 40 years ago,” Blanchard explained. “Now we’re finally on the other side.”
Pierre et Gilles said they had just returned from the opening of a retrospective of their work at the Musée d’Ixelles in Brussels, which will run through May 28.
Jean-Baptiste Mondino — the fashion photographer and director of iconic music videos for Madonna, Don Henley, Lenny Kravitz and Vanessa Paradis — shot the portraits of Pierre et Gilles over the course of an afternoon at the duo’s studio.
