Dolls Kill Arrives on Fairfax Avenue With Concept Shop

WELCOME TO FAIRFAX: Dolls Kill founders and husband-and-wife team Shaudi Lynn and Bobby Farahi saw a nice-looking space on Fairfax Avenue and went for it. The two on Saturday celebrate the grand opening of the company’s second store outside of their hometown of San Francisco, where they opened their first store in the Haight District a year ago.
The Los Angeles location, at 415 North Fairfax Avenue, is designed with an industrial nightclub in mind. To that end, the company imported a sound system from Italian custom audio equipment manufacturer Pequod Acoustics and played up the store’s gritty brick walls.
“Unlike the many retail stores that pop up all over L.A. in locations that over and over serve as some sort of clothing venue, our location on Fairfax had never been a storefront before,” said Shaudi Lynn in reference to the space’s past life as a mattress seller.
The store well exceeds the size of the company’s foray into retail with Fairfax totaling 6,000 square feet and dubbed a concept shop. San Francisco totals 1,100 square feet at 1475 Haight Street.
The Fairfax store’s assortment will include limited drops from the company’s proprietary labels Club Exx, Current Mood, Poster Girl, Widow and Sugar Thrillz

Fla. Woman Caught on Camera Asking Man to Kill Husband Gets 16 Years, But Lawyer Claims it Was Reality TV Stunt

A Florida woman accused of hiring a hit man to kill her husband in 2009 has been sentenced to 16 years in prison — but her attorney tells PEOPLE his client will appeal the case.

Dalia Dippolito was convicted last month of solicitation of first-degree murder. According to prosecutors, she was recorded on video and audio as she plotted to have Michael Dippolito killed. During her trial, jurors heard her telling an undercover detective she was “5,000 percent sure” she wanted her husband dead.

Circuit Judge Glenn Kelley imposed the sentence on Dippolito, saying that she had acted in a “cold and calculated manner.”

No money ever changed hands between Dippolito and the undercover detective, and Michael Dippolito was unharmed.

Dippolito has maintained that she never intended to go through with the murder-for-hire plot. Her attorneys say the recordings were part of a video project that she was doing along with Michael and her former lover so that the trio could land a reality TV show.

Dippolito’s attorney, Brian Claypool, told jurors that officers with the Boynton Beach Police Department failed to properly investigate the situation because they were eager to capture video footage for the TV show Cops.

Dippolito remains hopeful her conviction will be overturned on appeal, Claypool tells PEOPLE. A 2011 conviction was thrown out on appeal. A retrial last fall ended with a 3-3 hung jury.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

“She’s doing surprisingly well, considering,” Claypool says. “She is clinging to her faith during this time.”

Claypool tells PEOPLE that Dippolito’s team has several avenues for appeal.

Throughout the trial, Claypool alerted the judge that one of the jurors was allegedly falling asleep. “She was almost snoring,” he says. “We made two trial complaints on the record, and submitted five affidavits from people who saw her sleeping. Florida caselaw is clear that this is grounds for a new trial.”

If that doesn’t work, the defense will appeal on the grounds that X-rated text messages between Dippolito and her lover — who has since died — were prejudicial hearsay and should not have been read to the jury. Claypool also says that jurors heard unsubstantiated allegations that Dippolito had once tried to kill her husband with antifreeze, and that she had previously tried to hire another hitman.

“There are several grounds for appeal,” says Claypool, “and we intend to pursue them all. My client is not perfect, but she is a mother who didn’t do what they said she did. A lot of the evidence that was introduced was not only irrelevant, but it was extremely prejudicial.”

Prosecutors did not return PEOPLE’s calls for comment.

Pennsylvania Man Allegedly Used Homemade Gun to Kill His Ex-Girlfriend: ‘I Will Forever Hate You’

A Pennsylvania man allegedly became “obsessed” with his ex-girlfriend and fatally shot her last year with a homemade air gun, according to multiple reports.

Josef Raszler, 35, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with criminal homicide in the death of 46-year-old Stephanie Roof, PEOPLE confirms. Roof was found dead in the driveway of her home in Lower Macungie Township, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 13, the Morning Call reports.

Police claim Raszler used part of a metal projectile in the handmade gun to kill Roof more than a year after the mother of four broke off their relationship, according to the paper.

He allegedly used Internet tutorials to make the gun.

Raszler’s attorney was not immediately able to provide a comment to the Morning Call, and it was unclear if Raszler has entered a plea or remained in custody. PEOPLE could not immediately reach his lawyer.

Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Raszler and Roof broke up in the summer of 2015, but Raszler “was angry and not accepting of that breakup,” Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, District Attorney Jim Martin alleged to Lehigh Valley Live.

Officials claim Raszler became fixated on Roof and sent her text messages — which she did not respond to — for months after their breakup.

“I swear it will catch up with you. It happens on his time … not ours,” he allegedly wrote in one message, according to Lehigh Valley Live. “I was a perfectly good person just trying to help and now my soul has holes I can’t mend.”

In October 2015, Raszler allegedly texted Roof, “I will forever hate you.”

He lived directly across the street from Roof and the two began dating in January 2015, Lehigh Valley Live reports.

Roof’s oldest daughter, Tricia Vanderford, told WFMZ that waiting seven months for the arrest was “excruciating” because she had long suspected Raszler to be her mother’s killer.

“Every single day to see him be happy,” she said, “knowing a huge part of our happiness has been gone.”

Your Guilt-Free Guide To Last-Minute Holiday Shopping That Won’t Kill The Rainforest

By Philip Rothrock
This story is cross-posted on Ecosystem Marketplace

Have you seen Gucci’s retro “Jackie” bags, patterned after one of Jackie Kennedy’s favorites?

They’re not only lovely, but they’re made of “deforestation-free” leather.

That’s a pretty big deal, because cattle ranchers are chopping forests by the football field to produce beef and leather, which is one reason agriculture generates almost 30% of all greenhouse-gas emissions worldwide.

In the past decade, scores of companies have committed to delivering “deforestation-free” commodities, and some are already making good on their promises, while others seem to be making an honest effort to do so.

But there’s a new front opening, as Canadian boutique owner Cathy Reid recently found after receiving a holiday shipment of nightgowns.

“Some of the nighties are classic cotton flannel,” she wrote on her blog. “Others are silky fabrics, soft and cozy, perfect for the cooler nights in November.”

But then a customer read the label, and found they contained something called “rayon“, which Reid soon learned is a “cellulosic fiber” made of trees.

Such fibers are more common than you’d think, and they’re supposed to be more environmentally-friendly than cotton, that ravenous vampire plant that sucks the life out of soil.

That eco-friendliness, however, is questionable – and you, as a conscientious consumer, have the power to find the answers.
2016-12-18-1482072520-1389589-TimberPulp.PNG

Seven companies have committed to improve their sourcing of wood fibers for fabrics, but none have reported progress. Here is how that’s reflected in one Supply Change profile.

The “Big Four” Deforestation Commodities

Logging for timber and pulp – which includes cellulosic fibers – is the third-leading driver of deforestation around the world, and cattle ranching – which generates leather – is number one. These, together with soy and palm, comprise the “big four” forest risk commodities responsible for most of the world’s tropical deforestation – and until recently, it was nearly impossible to know if your holiday shopping was contributing to the problem.

That started to change when manufacturers like New Balance and Louis Vuitton, as well as retailers like Inditex/Zara and C&A, started promising to chop deforestation from key commodity supply chains. Then NGOs like CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) started rating companies based on their commitments. Last year, the Forest Trend’s Supply Change project started tracking the progress that companies report toward achieving those commitments – providing in the process a fascinating glimpse into the complex, interlocking global supply chains that stretch around the world, involving cattlemen and loggers, as well as subsistence farmers and indigenous people who harvest the commodities we buy as leather, linen, and lipstick.

Keeping Tabs

Supply Change monitors hundreds of companies from around the world and across the industrial spectrum, but just 26 of these are shoe and apparel companies, and only 22 of these have promised to reduce their impact on the world’s rainforests.

That’s roughly 85% of the companies profiled by Supply Change in this sector, and almost all of those have made more than one promise – meaning that the 22 companies have generated more than 40 pledges.

Good – right?

Kind of.

Fourteen of those pledges apply to packaging – which many companies (and everyone who recycles) has committed to doing right – while just seven of them apply to clothing made with wood fiber fabrics.

By contrast, 16 apply to leather.

Those differences are no coincidence: environmentalists have been campaigning for recycled packaging since the 1960s, and many are just now waking up to cellulosic fibers. Things can, however, move fast – as we learned with leather.

2016-12-18-1482072780-4508714-DCShop.jpg

A typical clothing shop in Washington, DC. How many of those fabrics contain wood fiber? And how much of that wood fiber is harvested sustainably? Photo credit: Philip Rothrock

Responding to the Critics

In 2009, Greenpeace built a campaign around evidence connecting deforestation in the Amazon with cattle products sold to many large public-facing brands. This set off a ripple effect among buyers and suppliers alike, and New Balance immediately committed to stop buying shoe-leather from suppliers in the Amazon biome. ASOS, Coach and Eram Group followed a few years later.

On the cellulosic fiber front, an NGO called Canopy launched the Fashion Loved by Forests campaign, and scores of retailers and manufactures vowed to steer clear of wood products from ancient and endangered forests.

Those consumer-facing companies, however, are at the mercy of suppliers, and Canopy says that the ten largest suppliers, responsible for about 75% of global supply, are just beginning to set and implement their own sustainability commitments. Fortunately, the two largest, Aditya Birla and Lenzing, are close to wrapping up their first desktop audits of global operations. They make up around 35% of global supply and received highest scores in Canopy’s first update on viscose producers and forests.

Frustratingly, companies are only reporting progress on about half of commitments for companies in every sector tracked by Supply Change, and clothing retailer Inditex/Zara is one of those that hasn’t reported any measurable progress on its clothing commitment so far – perhaps because it’s waiting for suppliers (like Lenzing) to provide traceability.

The Design Cycle

When clothing companies decide to purge deforestation from their supply chains, they face the same challenge that we, as individuals do: namely, where to begin? After all, very few apparel companies produce their own raw materials. Instead, they’re consumers themselves, and they tend to go through predictable stages of improvement.

First, they promise something along the lines of making sure that all of their leather is “deforestation-free” by 2020.

Then they scramble to find out where in the world their leather comes from – which involves mapping transactions between ranchers, slaughter houses, packing companies and finally traders.

At that point, they usually examine three strategies: move forward by avoiding purchases from high-deforestation areas, help iffy suppliers improve their practices, and/or look for alternate materials.

Each of these approaches break down further – some companies aim to restructure their entire supply chains, one supplier at a time, while others turn to existing certification programs. Stella McCartney brand products even use vegan leather.

A disturbing number, however simply go silent – and, indeed, of the 24 wood-related commitments tracked by Supply Change, only 11 have any reported progress. On the leather front, progress reports are available on 12 of 16 commitments.

Once they implement a strategy, they establish procedures for monitoring progress; and – if they’re serious – they look for independent third parties who can do it for them.

Tracing the Lace

Many companies, erring on the side of caution, only make commitments they’re confident they can achieve – like making sure commodities are traceable to the region, mill or tannery they came from, and ideally to the ranch or plantation. Even that, however, can be a monumental task.

Most of the apparel companies Supply Change tracks do intend to trace their leather supply, and a few, like New Balance and Coach,   require all their suppliers to submit signed assurances that their cattle doesn’t come from the Amazon. Coach says its suppliers have done so.

Similarly, H&M requires signed partner agreements to ensure compliance with its Business Partner requirements for both its wood and leather commitments, and its going one step further for its commitment on cellulosic fiber by working with suppliers to make their own CanopyStyle Pledges.

That raises another question: can the suppliers be trusted?

Meeting the Dress Code

Scores of companies are embedding environmental and social issues into their procurement guidelines, and some – like Adidas – are hiring third parties to audit all direct suppliers and making it clear that non-compliance could terminate the contract. A few, like Puma (owned by retail giant Kering) are even providing funds to help suppliers meet their environmental standards.

Puma also publicly lists its top-tier suppliers, while multi-stakeholder initiatives like SEDEX, CERES, CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), and IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative aim to help companies find meaningful ways of engaging their suppliers on a range of environmental issues and increasingly land use management.

Other initiatives go even further – and do so in ways that promote real change on the ground.

It’s Fashionable to be Certified

When companies abandon high-risk areas, they often fix their own problem but drive poverty and desperation in the places left behind, according to Rosa Maria Vidal of the Governors’ Climate and Forests Fund.

Certification programs, on the other hand, promote sustainable resource management by ensuring companies maintain minimum environmental and social industry standards.

Roughly 20% of all wood products are certified under either the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Program for the Enforcement of Forest Certification, but certification efforts only began to seriously consider wood fabrics three years ago. As we saw earlier, only seven companies have committed to sustainably source wood fibers embedded in their clothes, and none of them have reported progress.

In leather, the certification of choice is the Leather Working Group (LWG), which audits companies to make sure their leather isn’t associated with deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon biome – making them, in essence, an audited version of the independent commitments made by New Balance, Coach, Eram Group and ASOS. Roughly half of all leather commitments are tied to the LWG, which has already audited more than 14% of leather production.

All of the companies building pledges on LWG certification are reporting progress, ranging from 15% for H&M to around 100% for Nike and Timberland.

These consumer-facing companies rely on LWG-certified tanneries like Couro do Norte, which in turn use lists of bad actors published daily by government agencies and non-profits to keep suppliers honest.

Brazil’s three largest meatpackers – JBS, Marfrig, and Minerva – also supply the leather sector, and they use the same monitoring systems while also publishing third-party audits of their procurement.

All of these efforts are helping to push these hidden supply chains out into the open, across all commodities, so that – hopefully – products like Gucci’s bag will become the norm rather than the exception that proves the rule.

What Can I Do?

Until that day arrives, you can follow the example set by Cathy Reid’s inquisitive customer and ask your own retailers where their clothes come from. Most probably won’t be able to answer, but those questions do filter up. Here’s a list to get you started:

  • Do any of your clothes contain cellulosic fiber or leather? Are there non-leather and cellulosic fiber alternatives?
  • Where does the leather for your purses, jackets, shoes, wallets, come from?
  • How about the forest fibers? Beware, many leather items say made in Italy or China, but this refers to where the products are manufactured, the cows may still be raised in the Amazon or other threatened landscapes.
  • Does your company have a zero deforestation policy(ies) that cover world-wide production of [cattle/leather] and [wood/clothing fibers]?
  • Has your company begun implementing its policy, including supporting and holding suppliers to account?

Take care this holiday season, and remember to read the fine print, because not all gifts may be as caring and thoughtful as you might think when their sources are tainted by deforestation and exploitation.

Facebook hopes to kill the username and password

At its F8 developer conference, Facebook announced Account Kit, a new way for app developers to let users sign up for services with an email or phone number, no username or password required. SEE ALSO: You can now build bots for Facebook Messenger An extension of the existing Facebook login system, Account Kit is designed for developers who want an easy way for users to create accountswithout having to sign in using Facebook. Account Kit lets developers drop in code that will speed up the account-creation process. Instead, a user can use an email address or phone number. Users will receive a confirmation message via SMS or email to get setup. If this sounds a lot like Digits — which is part of Twitter’s Fabric development platform — that’s because it is. The idea is to reduce the friction it takes to sign up for an account within an app. And although we’re sure Facebook would prefer that users sign up for an app with a Facebook account (app developers would probably prefer that too), solving the problem of user sign-ups is important. And if Account Kit can help with that, it ultimately means more developers are using Facebook’s developer tools and platforms. Account Kit is available for iOS, Android and web and mobile web.

How Not to Kill Your Awards Show

David Ahearn is co-founder of Four Day Weekend.

Our comedy group, Four Day Weekend, has had the honor and pleasure of performing at corporate awards banquets for more than a decade. Typically, we were hired to perform after the awards, which meant we were invariably met with a very challenging room. So we were forced to figure out how to take a bit more control of the outcome of the event, and thus our interstitial show was invented.

It’s like the Oscars telecast. We open by interviewing an attendee, transition into an improvised song, and the show is off and running, with the Four Day Weekend hosts handing out the awards.

At various points during the ceremony we take a break from the awards portion of the show to perform one of our comedy routines. The format is a win for everyone, because awardees are honored while the audience is entertained throughout the evening.

Along the way, we’ve discovered some tips, tricks and tools for meeting planners and producers. Here are three:

1. Shrink the Centerpiece

Those large ornamental table decorations look amazing — and also block the action on stage. When the husband’s or wife’s or parent’s or friend’s name is finally announced, that looming feather table piece that looks like a costume Cher wore to the actual Oscars in the 80s might be right in the way.

This creates a giant disconnection with the audience, which makes them ultimately turn to the person sitting next to them and start talking. Soon these amazing table ornaments have single-handedly created apathy for those watching the production. Want to take a picture of your special loved one who is receiving their award after a lifetime of hard work to get to this moment? Not if the NBC Peacock has anything to do with it.

Tip: Keep your centerpieces small and elegant, and allow people to see the production on stage. This is why they came to the event. Consider setting the room for the production and not to make the room look like the most amazing prom night any adult could ever hope for. Let our award winners be the stars and not a headdress Björk would wear for her upcoming concert.

2. Beware the Comedy Moat

When you set up the dance floor in front of the stage you create a huge chasm between your audience and the stage. We like to call this the “comedy moat.” It is the 50-foot space between the people on the stage and the audience that ignores them, because they forgot to bring their opera glasses for the performance. We understand that you want to have the dance floor close to the stage so that at the end of the night when everyone is singing “Sweet Caroline,” our middle-aged dancers can interact with the band. We also know this doesn’t actually happen, and that the minute the band strikes up, the room clears like a Gulf Coast city after a Category 5 Hurricane Warning. That stage looks like Kim Kardashian’s spiritual journal — one empty space after the next. Forget about it.

The awards event, the event that everyone came for, will last between 90 minutes and two hours, and the room gets set to accommodate the 11 people that will dance after that event. Consider moving the stage to the back of the room, and at the end of the awards ceremony have your emcee direct everyone’s attention to the back of the room where the dancing will begin. This way, our closest VIP tables truly will be at the front of the stage and all of the attention of the room will be placed on the most important aspect of the evening: your award winners.

3. Eat First

Nothing, let me repeat, nothing competes with food. Stephen Hawking could take the first step out of his wheelchair in years and if people are eating no one would notice. Nothing kills a performance or an awards banquet more quickly than the clanking of silverware while the VP of sales tries to engage the audience with his/her latest “that’s what she said” joke. (We know you saw “The Office,” Mr./Ms. VP. We all did. And for the record, they were making fun of people who say, “That’s what she said.”)

For all the people at the event who are not receiving an award the highlight is pretty much the free meal and open bar. People are hungry when they arrive. Their teambuilding session took a lot out of them and most of them can’t believe they lost the bike-building contest to the western region. When is the east going to get the respect they deserve?

Let the people coming to the event eat, drink, and impress their co-workers first. Once dinner is out of the way the plus-ones and also-rans will be more inclined to watch the guy who won the award instead of them. (Bitter is better on a full tummy.)

If you pre-set desserts and then have a five-minute Voice of God announcement that the program will soon begin, you can tell your banquet captain to suspend service during the awards ceremony. This will draw the attention of the audience back to the stage where we can now honor all of the awardees and the producers and crew can get back to making fun of the talent with headset chatter. (We know you make fun of us. It’s O.K., we know we are soft and entitled. We can handle it.)

These are just some friendly tips from they guys who take the stage and are out on the frontlines of combat for you. Oh, and one more small note: please try to keep rehearsals to less than an hour. And for the love of God, don’t have a rehearsal to talk about the rehearsal.

‘The Americans’ Recap: Are They Going to Kill Martha?

NOTE: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 3, Episode 11 & 12 of FX’s The Americans, titled “One Day in the Life of Anton Baklanov and “I Am Abassin Zadran”

All I care about is Paige now, I can’t help it. Well, also Henry. He’s is just the cutest, dumbest little brother that ever lived, and I should know because I have one. But Paige! I love that Elizabeth hates her church so much. Best quote? “Potluck, poster making, sing-a-long” is the best description of church groups I have ever heard.

And then the tension. Granny’s back. Stan is at Marthas. We are heading into a finale and the stakes are higher than ever before. Are we all having mini strokes every Wednesday? Here are some of my favorite freak outs:

I do hope they don’t kill Martha because they think she tattled. Next week is the finale and I don’t know if I’ll breathe during it all. But never fear, they’re already working on next year:

What are your finale predictions? Tweet them at me @karenfratti

I Did Not Kill My Husband

I Did Not Kill My Husband

Li Xuelian, married to Qin Yuhe, is pregnant with their second child. Happy news? Not in China, with its one-child policy. It is a crime. What is she to do? Her only option is divorcing before the second child is born. “Once the baby has entered into the household registry, we’ll marry again. The baby will be born after the divorce, so we’ll each have one child when we marry again. No law says couples with one child can’t marry.” Perfect! Except that after the divorce, Qin marries. another woman who is expecting a baby. Mad with rage, Li runs to the judge, begging him to declare the divorce a sham so she may remarry and truly divorce the fool! Liu’s politically charged plot reads like an absurd and hilarious comedy, but couched in his fiction is a harsh indictment of China’s one-child law and a head-on critique of China’s corrupt system. I Did Not Kill My Husband is storytelling and satire of the highest order, sharp-edged and ironic.

But what you can expect is having the same experience if Frank “Pistol Pete” Eaton invited you to: “Hang up yer shootin’ iron, pull up a chair and sit a spell” .with him on the front porch of his Perkins Oklahoma home and listen as he describes in vivid details his colorful life as the Old West’s most UN-famous, famous gunfighter, hired gun regulator and lawman. “The book is great. I have read other so called real west books and a few magazines, but this one tops all the others.”- Franklin Foster, Warwick, R.I.

8 Steps to Kill Writer’s Block and Dance With the Muse

2014-09-04-writinginKip.png

I don’t believe in writer’s block.

There, I said it.

I do believe sometimes you write better than other times.

I was lucky. I grew up in the world of acting and had teachers who taught me that the creative process was not just about listening to your head, it was about listening from a different place, Sandy Miesner called it the impulse. So I learned you find the creative flow by opening the field of vision in order to listen with all of the senses.

After I left the world of acting and eventually learned about spirituality, it was great fun to discover the two disciplines had a lot in common: presence, listening, noticing the voice of the ego vs the voice of spirit.

It was Betty Buckley who opened my eyes to how to be a shamanic creatrix. Of course, she never would have used those words. I was lucky to work as an intern at the Williamstown Theater festival where she was performing. I will never forget sitting in her audience, feeling her song, and understanding for the first time the real power of performance. Betty anchored in the teaching that when you connect to the sacred through your creative act, when you step on to the stage with the intention to connect to the heart of your audience, you can have a profound impact.

I think of it as touching the void, that moment when you allow a universal truth to run through you. You surface something through your words/dance/acting/movement/song that your audience recognizes as true… they can feel it in a place that needs no words, and they experience the inner nod… because you are dancing with the muse.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Elizabeth Gilbert’s great TED TALK, The Elusive Creative Genius, where she discussed how the pressure of believing it is just you creating is enough to drive anyone insane.

But I digress. Lets cut to the chase and focus on the title of this post. If you are living in the illusion that you are creating all on your own and are feeling disconnected from the genius… I hope these tips help you break on through to the other side.

1. Stop Listening to Yourself

If what you are writing is crap, just stop.

Listen. The muse loves to play. All you need to do is be present enough to listen. She’ll come around often and lots when you stop pretending you are the only one creating.

Now that you stopped trying to create, go with the first thing that comes to mind. Even if it seems crazy and out of place, just go with it and see where it takes you. Trust.

2. Do Something That Scares You

I’m not saying jump off a cliff for heaven’s sake. I’m saying step out of your familiar comfort zone. Invite new experiences into your life. See what new conversations take place, what new material presents, what inspiration arises. (This is the quickest way to shake yourself out any kind of rut (right next to doing something good for someone else.)

3. Watch Robin Williams

When Robin died, I did what you did, started watching old videos of his interviews. He was out of control. Some of what he said was hilarious. Some of what he said wasn’t, but the fact that he said it was hilarious. For better or for worse, he didn’t censor what came through him. The result: We loved him for being his wild zany unpredictable self. We’ll probably love you for being your authentic self too… once you start sharing it with us.

3. Listen With Purpose

Imagine yourself surrounded by a muse/guardian angel. All she wants to do is inspire you, but the only way she can speak to you is through the physical things that surround you. NOW the annoying guy in the Starbucks line talking too loudly on his cell phone is about to say the title of your next book, the wind whispering through the pines is going to make you remember a sensation that explains your character in a way you didn’t dare to imagine. You get it. Everything is material. Everything. That little voice speaking…maybe it comes from behind you, inside of you, arrives in your mind’s eye…that is the muse my friend. Just take the first snipit and run like a banshee and don’t look back until you’re done. Edit later. It’s ok. Something will be in there.

4. Step Away

Everyone knows the most brilliant ideas arrive as soon as you get up to go to the bathroom. Why? Because when you’re going on and on for hours with your pals trying to create something epic, your line of vision can become so focused, it becomes narrow. So step away from what you are focusing on and allow your mind’s field of vision to expand again and let the muse in for another spin around the dance floor.

5. Leave No Pencil Behind

Walk with a notebook and pen everywhere you go. Write every little idea that comes to you. Put the ideas for new projects in a special place. Don’t think you will remember them. The muse can be fickle and can take what she offers right after she gives it. So write it all down. Right now. Before you forget. (You can use Evernote for this if you just. can’t. put. down. your. phone.

6. Do What You Love

If you’re still pretending you can’t get through your writer’s block or create anything of worth, then open up a new document, think about that other idea or concept or story idea that totally turns you on, and go for it. You’ll hate me in the morning. Why? Because you’ll stay up all night pacing with new ideas, high as a kite coursing with the passion for this new project, and write the first 17 chapters of your next book. Then you’ll have to decide which one you need to finish first. I apologize in advance. Meanwhile, you played in a river that was flowing and that was fun.

7. Leave Everything Behind And See What You’re Made Of

For an hour, for a day, for a month, for a year. Put the physical things that are taking up your energy aside. Clear all of your psychic debts. Deal with the people you have been avoiding. Clean up your physical space, and there will be so much more room for the muse and the genius to run though you.

8. Just Do It

I thought I had it all figured out until Paul Hawken (who has authored seven books) said something that stopped me in my tracks. He said something along the lines of how he just doesn’t buy it when people say “spirit wrote the book.” He said, YOU write the book. You are the one that sits down every day and writes.

I should add I also don’t believe in waiting for spirit to “move me.” It’s like meditating. It’s a practice, you show up every day and just do it. Some days are great. Some days aren’t as great. (And when spirit does come with a dose of inspiration, you know I right it down asap.)

Confession

Now I’m going to confess something. Last night I had a nightmare that this small being that I was caring for ran out into the street and was stabbed by a pitch fork. When I picked it up, there were holes throughout it’s body, but once it was in my hands, the holes healed. The whole day I was terrified that the dream was about the novel I just launched I kickstarter. I offered to give people one chapter at a time as I complete the final draft of the manuscript. (CRAZY.) I think my dream was pointing out my fear that people mike poke holes in this story that I was put in care of creating. I think of stories like that, as having a soul of their own that we have the good fortune of caring for.

It is inevitable, at some point, when you put yourself out there, people won’t care for your creation. But so what. Don’t let that stop you from creating. Most people don’t like the smell of your breath first thing in the morning either. Does that stop you from brushing? My point exactly.

The only reason anything happens is so the next thing can happen. So just keep on going and see what happens next.

“3 Days to Kill” Proves Costner’s Still Got It

Movie Review Jackie K Cooper
“3 Days to Kill” (Relativity)

Kevin Costner is starring in the new action flick “3 Days to Kill” and he is bringing his charm and charisma with him. Costner has co-stars in the movie, notably Amber Heard and Hailee Steinfeld, but the success or failure of this film rests on his shoulders and his unique talent. At one time in his career every project he touched turned to gold but in the last few years that “Midas touch” has evaporated. This movie however indicates a large portion of the Costner charm is still on view.

Costner plays government hit man Ethan Renner. He is one of the best in his business but his health is deteriorating. Faced with the diagnosis that he is dying Ethan returns to Paris where his wife Christine (Connie Nielsen) and daughter Zoey (Steinfeld) live. He wants to connect with them one last time.

Ethan does not tell his daughter of his condition which means that her hostile feelings towards him continue. To further complicate his life, a CIA operative named Vivi (Heard) tells him she has an experimental drug that can extend his life. She will provide it if he will do one last job for the Agency. He agrees even though he has promised his wife he is out of this business.

The film, which is based on a screenplay by Luc Bresson among others, revs up the violence quotient and keeps Ethan dodging bullets. Bresson is the man behind the celebrated action films “Taken” and “The Transporter.” He definitely knows how to keep audiences enthralled in the action on screen.

As Ethan, Costner creates the same kind of romantic hero he perfected in movies such as “The Bodyguard” and “Field of Dreams.” In this film Ethan picks Zoey up in his arms to carry her to safety. This brings back those chilling moments when he did the same for Whitney Houston in “The Bodyguard.”

Heard, Steinfeld and Nielsen give strong support to Costner in this film. Heard creates a character who is a cool killer but also an alluring ally. Nielsen adds to the emotionalism of the film as the woman who hates what Ethan does but loves him just the same. Steinfeld makes Zoey as complex and adorable as any teen can be.

The film is rated PG-13 for profanity, brief nudity and violence.

This movie is not without its flaws. The violent scenes are a bit redundant and the length of the film is too long. Still for those who have wanted Costner’s star to return to its orbit “3 Days To Kill” is a pleasant surprise.

I scored “3 Days to Kill” a slain 6 out of 10.
