A Deadly Trap? After Journalist Reportedly Killed in Consulate, Shocked Friends Vow to Fight for Justice

As increasingly horrific reports continue to emerge about the fate of dissident Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi, shocked friends of the missing Washington Post columnist are vowing to push for justice on his behalf.

“We’re fighting like hell,” Karen Attiah, Khashoggi’s editor at the Post, tells PEOPLE. “Like absolute hell.”

The 60-year old Khashoggi, a Saudi native who had been living in self-imposed exile in Virginia, vanished on Oct. 2 after walking into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

He reportedly went there to obtain divorce papers so that he could marry his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz. But Turkish authorities believe that instead of being handed the promised papers, Khashoggi was lured there to be tortured, killed and even dismembered inside the consulate by a hit squad flown in from Riyadh, the Saudi capital.

A well-known journalist in his home country, Khashoggi — a one-time insider with the ruling House of Saud — had grown increasingly critical of the policies imposed by the country’s 33-year-old de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, also known as MBS.

Khashoggi fell afoul of Saudi authorities, American intelligence sources tell PEOPLE. He fled to Virginia in 2017.

“He knew he was in danger,” says David Ignatius, Khashoggi’s friend and Post colleague. “He felt he should not go back to Saudi Arabia.”

• For more on the life and sudden disappearance of writer Jamal Khashoggi, subscribe now to PEOPLE or pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday.

In the United States, Khashoggi soon took up a column for the Post, where he continued to criticize bin Salman.

He was aware that his work was being translated and read overseas, colleagues say, and that his views provoked ire in some royal quarters. “He was often scared,” Ignatius says. “He was worried.”

Attiah says Khashoggi was “excited” and “proud” to have the platform of the Post.

“Still,” she tells PEOPLE, “it was painful for him to have to write about the repression in his country. He said Saudi Arabia was always harsh, but never like this.”

An impending marriage was enough to send the usually wary Khashoggi — whom friends describe as “lonely” — inside Saudi territory abroad, to the consulate in Istanbul.

What happened after he entered the building more than two weeks ago is still the subject of official dispute, though Turkish authorities, quoted anonymously in various news articles, have described a grisly end orchestrated by the Saudi government, apparently in retribution for Khashoggi’s open criticism.

Saudi authorities, meanwhile, previously denied any wrongdoing and said that Khashoggi had left the consulate that day unharmed.

It remains unclear if the crown prince had any direct knowledge of what happened to him, though some sources have reportedly said it would be unlikely he would have been unaware given his position.

Under international scrutiny and amid further damning news reports, sources told CNN and other outlets this week that Saudi Arabia was possibly preparing to concede that he had been killed in an interrogation or planned abduction gone wrong.

The case has cast a harsh light on the U.S.’s years-long, if controversial, support of Saudi Arabia. Various politicians, including those in the Trump administration, have sounded their concern. (Khashoggi was a legal U.S. resident.)

While officials scramble to address what has become an international crisis, the missing man’s friends and colleagues agonize over his fate — and vow to find answers.

“I hope that this story turns out to have a better outcome, but with this much time and no answers, it seems increasingly unlikely that he is alive,” Attiah says. “I hope I’m wrong.”

Says Ignatius: “I’m hoping and praying, but more and more it’s looking like he was killed and in a horrible way.”

Khashoggi’s Post colleagues remember a tall man who was amiable and engaging, with a “sweet moon face” and a “gentle” spirit.

On his values, though, he could be stubborn.

“He had an inability compromise,” Ignatius says. “He believed in telling the truth. Some people don’t know how to compromise. He was one of them.”

In the wake of his vanishing and reported death, Attiah says, she is re-reading Khashoggi’s columns that she herself edited.

“He put himself in the feelings of other prisoners sitting in cells,” she says. “Now that we’re all imagining what was going through Jamal’s mind, I wonder: Did he overestimate how safe he was?”

Attiah keeps going back to the day Khashoggi walked into the consulate and her first inkling that something wasn’t right.

“That morning I was brushing my teeth and I thought, ‘I haven’t talked to Jamal in a while,’ ” she recalls.

She senses now that she will never talk to Khashoggi again.

“The truth is Jamal is not here,” Attiah tells PEOPLE. “The truth is he went into the embassy and never came out.”

It’s a devastating reality — and a motivating one. The Post has published excerpts from some of Khashoggi’s columns on a tribute page to the missing writer.

“If anything, this has energized me to continue this mission,” Attiah says. “Whoever did this, they can’t kill a mission.”

Little Women Cast Member Sentenced in DUI Crash That Killed Coast Guard Member Picking Up Wife for Her Birthday

Former Little Women: Atlanta cast member Melissa Hancock was sentenced Wednesday to 16 years in prison after she pleaded guilty earlier this year for her role in a fatal car crash, PEOPLE confirms.

Hancock, 26, admitted to four crimes in connection with the November wreck, court records show: aggravated involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, driving the wrong way and failing to obey a highway sign.

On Nov. 5, 2017, about 2 a.m., Virginia State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash involving a wrong way driver in Virginia Beach, a police spokesperson previously told PEOPLE.

Hancock was driving westbound on I-264 in the eastbound lanes when her 2011 Cadillac struck Daniel Dill’s 2009 Mazda head on.

Her “blood alcohol content tested at 0.112 percent two hours after the crash,” authorities told told CBS News.

Dill, a longtime member of the U.S. Coast Guard, was transported to Virginia Beach General Hospital where he died the following day from severe blunt force trauma to his neck and torso, according to the Virginian-Pilot. He was 29.

Dill’s wife, Natalie, had been celebrating her birthday with friends, Dill’s sister, Kelly Vazquez, told PEOPLE at the time. She said Dill arranged to pick his wife up so that “she didn’t drink and drive.”

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Dill was en route to get Natalie when Hancock hit his car.

“He was the type of man who would do anything and everything to help others,” Vazquez told PEOPLE last year of her brother. “Just recently he had returned from Puerto Rico where he was assisting with the hurricane relief efforts.”

At her sentencing on Wednesday, Hancock, who appeared on season 2 of Lifetime’s Little Women: Atlanta, described her remorse to Dill’s family and friends.

“Words cannot express my sympathy,” she said, according to the Virginian-Pilot. “I can’t believe what I have done. I could never mean to hurt anyone.” (Reached by PEOPLE, her attorney did not immediately provide a comment on her sentencing.)

Dill’s wife, his friend and five of his family members reportedly read victim impact statements about his character and the loss they suffered.

“He and Natalie made all the right decisions that night,” Dill’s friend Aaron Goh told the judge, the Virginian-Pilot reports. “She made all the wrong decisions. And yet they’re the ones suffering the consequences.”

Mom of Woman Killed in Horrific Limo Crash Alongside Boyfriend Speaks Out: ‘There’s Nothing Worse’

When she heard news about the horrific limousine accident that left 20 dead in upstate New York on Saturday afternoon, Martina Wieblitz Halse desperately tried to contact her daughter, Amanda Halse, who she knew was traveling with a large group in that same area.

Martina and her daughter, Karina Halse, repeatedly texted and called Amanda, but with each message sent and number dialed, their attempts went unanswered.

Then, their worst fears were realized when an investigator appeared at their door.

“I don’t even know what injuries she had,” Martina tells PEOPLE of finding out Amanda, 26, was in the limo when it crashed. “They told me that they took her out of the limousine and put her in an ambulance to go to the hospital and she still had a heartbeat.”

Amanda ultimately died from her injuries, which she suffered as she was celebrating her friend Amy Steenburg’s 30th birthday on October 6. The group of friends were in a limo that failed to stop at a T-intersection in the rural town of Schoharie in upstate New York. The limo flew into a nearby parking lot and crashed into an unoccupied SUV, killing the driver and all 17 passengers. The accident also claimed the lives of two pedestrians, who were struck by a parked SUV after it was slammed into by the limo.

“It’s terrible. I lost my baby. I last saw her the week before on a Saturday,” Martina says. “There’s nothing, nothing worse than this.”

RELATEDCouple Killed in Limo Crash Were ‘Amazing Parents:’ They Were Devoted to Their Kids’

Martina, who is paralyzed, says she she saw a lot of herself in her daughter, Amanda, including her love of arts and crafts. Because of Martina’s condition, Amanda would spend time helping her mother tend to the flowers in her garden. The two had initially planned to go to a fall festival on Sunday, after Amanda returned from her trip with her friends.

“She was way too young ,” Martina says through tears. “She was such a kind person, everybody loved her.”

Amanda also shared a close relationship with her siblings.

“I am hanging in there. Taking it one step at a time,” says Amanda’s sister, Karina. “I feel a sense of strength when I talk about my sister so I believe she is helping me through this, but overall, I feel empty, devastated and just sad.”

During the drive, Amanda had been accompanied by her boyfriend, Patrick Cushing, 31, who was also killed in the crash.

“Patrick was such a passionate and good-hearted person. He had such empathy and kindness,” his brother, Justin Cushing, tells PEOPLE.

Patrick was a gifted athlete and played dodgeball for Team USA, Justin says, but most of all, he deeply loved those closest to him.

“He loved, hugged and cried with his friends and family like their problems were his,” he explains. “ celebrated with those same family and friends like our successes were his personal goals.”

RELATED4 Sisters, Their Husbands, Newlyweds & Parents Among 20 Killed in Tragic Limo Crash

While he was passionate about photography and sports, Patrick was also devoted to his role as a godparent to Adam and Abigail Jackson’s two young daughters, Archer, 4, and 16-month-old Ellie.

“He took it like he was an adopted third parent,” Justin says. “He kept her pictures in his phone to show off like they were his own.”

Adam and Abigail also lost their lives in the crash, which is still under investigation. A GoFundMe page has been set up to provide for their daughters, which has raised more than $ 65,000.

With nearly two dozen people lost in the accident, the pain of the tragedy is felt far and wide. For Justin, who served as best man for Adam in his wedding to Abigail, the devastation is unimaginable.

“I lost my two best friends in this, in my brother and Adam. I lost my cousin in Erin ,” he says. “This was all so hard to write and I’m shaking knowing I’m missing something important to his life.”

‘Heartless Psychopath’ Husband Allegedly Killed His Pregnant Wife and Daughters: Victim’s Brother

The brother of a slain Colorado mom vented his grief on Facebook against the woman’s husband, who is suspected of killing the woman and the couple’s two young daughters.

“I just want 30 seconds alone with that heartless psychopath,” posted Frankie Rzucek, the brother of Shanann Watts, who was 15 weeks pregnant.

According to the post, Shanann was going to have a son and name him Niko.

“My blood is boiling and the pain and anger and sadness I have in my heart,” Rzucek wrote.

In another post, Rzucek also shared a photo of himself and his two nieces, Celeste, 3, and 4-year-old Bella, to whom he described in a separate post as “absolutely adorable, precious, harmless.”

According to a family friend, Shanann and Chris “were having marital problems and she was getting ready to leave him.”

Shanann, Celeste and Bella were reported missing on Monday. On Wednesday night, the Frederick Police Department, working with the FBI and Colorado Bureau of Investigation, arrested Chris Watts, who had given multiple media interviews pleading for their safe return.

He has been charged with three counts of murder in the first degree and three counts of tampering with physical evidence, according to court records.

Multiple outlets, citing police sources, have reported the husband confessed, but police have not confirmed or denied such reports.

It was not immediately clear if Chris Watts has an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

The body of Shanann was found on Thursday, police said at a press conference, though no cause of death was revealed.

The bodies of the children have not been found, but Colorado Bureau of Investigation director John Camper said at the press conference, “We have strong reason to believe that we know where the bodies of the children are and recovery efforts are in process on that.”

PEOPLE has not been able to reach Shanann’s family, but CBS Denver reported the family said in a statement, “It is with deep hurt, confusion and anger to confirm our beautiful cousin Shanann Watts, her unborn child, and her two angelic daughters, Bella (4), Celeste (3) were viciously murdered by husband Chris Watts; who confessed to the killings. Please keep Shanann’s parents and brother in your prayers.”

Shanann’s family has launched a fundraiser page on Facebook to help with expenses for services.

New Jersey Mom Who Survived Car Crash That Killed Husband and Daughters Learns Family’s Fate

The brother of the New Jersey man who was killed along with his four daughters in a multi-car crash on Friday says that “they were the most special family” and were beloved by everyone who knew them.

The sole survivor of the crash, mother Mary Rose Trinidad, is recovering in the hospital and is in stable condition.

Audie Trinidad, 61, and their daughters — Kaitlyn, 20, Danna, 17, and 13-year-old twins Allison and Melissa —were killed on a Delaware highway in their minivan when a pickup truck going the opposite direction crossed over the median and slammed into their vehicle, ABC News 7 reported.

Audie’s brother, Daniel Trinidad, tells PEOPLE that he saw Mary Rose on Monday morning before she went into another surgery for her right shoulder.

“She wasn’t on medicine then so she wasn’t groggy and was able to cry,” says Daniel, 59. “She said it was finally sinking in that they’re gone forever. She said, ‘Now I’m by myself’ and I said, ‘You’re not alone. We’re here.’ It’s going to be painful for her, emotionally and physically. We will give her a lot of love.”

It took this tragedy, says Daniel, for him to realize how much the family’s community valued his brother and nieces.

“I live in Miami and when I came here everyone on the street said Audie was the sweetest and nicest neighbor,” he says, 59. “This is his legacy. He was full of love and compassion. Classmates came over to pay their respects and were just sobbing. They said that the girls could never say no to someone who needed help. They didn’t know the definition of no.”

He added: “It’s so heartwarming. My brother was so well loved.”

Just hours before the crash, Audie sent his brother pictures of the crabs they were eating for lunch before heading back home to Teaneck, New Jersey.

“That was the last time we texted,” says Daniel, who visited the family once a year. “But we spoke on Father’s Day.”

The family is waiting for Mary Rose to heal so that she can be present for the viewing and funerals.

“We’re in no rush,” says Daniel. “It won’t be that soon.”

According to an initial investigation, the incident took place on Friday “at approximately 3:47 p.m.,” and involved three cars: a 2007 Ford F-350 — which was traveling southbound — a 2002 Mercury Sable, and a 1998 Toyota Sienna, which were both traveling northbound. The family of six was driving in the 1998 Toyota Sienna.

“For unknown reasons, the F-350 failed to remain in the southbound lanes of travel and exited the roadway, crossing over the grassy median and into the northbound lanes of travel,” read a statement shared on the Delaware State Police website by public information officer Melissa Jaffe.

“The front driver’s side of the F-350 struck the left rear side of the Sable, causing the Sable to spin out of control and come to a rest in an embankment. The F-350 continued out of control southbound in the northbound lanes, when the front of the Sienna struck the passengers side of the F-350. The impact caused both vehicles to be displaced off the edge of the roadway and into a ditch,” Jaffe added.

While Audie and his 53-year-old wife were properly restrained at the time of the crash, their four daughters were not, said Jaffe. Audie and his daughters were pronounced dead at the scene. His wife was transported to a local area hospital where she was admitted with serious injuries.

Wash. Teen Was Lured into Woods for Camping Trip Before Friend Allegedly Raped, Killed Him

The Washington 16-year-old who police allege was raped and beaten to death by his childhood friend and the friend’s brother was lured into the woods on the premise of a camping trip and then assaulted for nearly 45 minutes, according to charging documents obtained by PEOPLE.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office has charged Jonathon Adamson, 21, and his 16-year-old brother Benito Marquez with first-degree rape and murder in the death of Benjamin Eastman, who was last seen alive on June 23 before his body was found on June 28 on a remote parcel of land owned by Marquez’s relative.

According to the charging documents, Marquez, who is being charged as an adult, was a childhood friend of Ben’s. He and his brother allegedly lured Ben into the woods for a camping trip on June 24, but then knocked him to the ground and assaulted him for nearly 45 minutes.

The charging documents allege Adamson told police he and Marquez sexually assaulted Ben with a stick while he was still alive.

Before burying Ben, the brothers allegedly beat him in the head with a rock to ensure he was dead.

The brothers are also both charged with tampering with physical evidence and unlawful disposal of remains and are currently being held on $ 10 million bail. Information about whether they have entered a plea or retained attorneys was not immediately available.

Victim’s Father: ‘My Son Is Loved’

Ben lived with his father in Randle, and his father, Benjamin Eastman, sat in the front row Monday during the suspect’s court appearance, reports KOMONews.com.

“I wanted them to look at me, I wanted to look them in the eye,” the father told the outlet.

Ben’s father told the outlet that Ben was a joyful, happy teenager, and the two enjoyed camping, fishing and dirt biking together.

Ben’s father said there are “evil people out there. I don’t know what makes them tick. I don’t want to know. I’m loved, and my son was loved and that’s all I’m about.”

According to local station KIRO7, hundreds gathered for a vigil at the White Pass Junior and Senior High School in Randle. Principal Chris Schumaker said it was fitting the service began in the gym because Ben loved sports so much and was always in the gym.

Ben and his family were fans of the Miami Dolphins, and during the vigil, the family released aqua and orange balloons representing the Dolphins team colors, the outlet reports.

Santa Fe Shooting Victim Was Planning to Have 17th Birthday Party the Day After He Was Killed

Days before he was fatally shot in last Friday’s mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas, Jared Black turned 17 years old, according to multiple reports.

He planned to celebrate his birthday with family and friends that Saturday, the New York Times and KTRK report. But what was supposed to be a celebratory week for Jared and his family became a tragic one when Black became one of 10 fatal victims — eight of them students — of the massacre.

“It’s hard,” Jared’s brother, Nick Black, told KTLA. “I still don’t believe it happened. It’s horrible.”

Jared was in first period art class when shots were fired inside the classroom, a man named Travis Stanich wrote on Facebook Friday morning, before he knew Jared was dead.

Jared loved art, his family told KTLA. A friend paid tribute to the teen with a Facebook post and picture.

“It’s wonderful memories like those that will remain in their hearts forever! I’m thankful for that time they spent,” family friend and spokesperson Elizabeth McGinnis wrote on a GoFundMe page to help Jared’s family.

McGinnis was with Jared’s father, Bobby, when he learned his son had been killed.

“Such a rough day for all,” she wrote on the GoFundMe page.

“ sat in misery for 13 hours not knowing if was one of the victims,” McGinnis continued. “Then he got the devastating news after 6 p.m.”

Mom of Carolina Panthers Employee Who Killed 2 Kids Says She ‘Has Never Shown Any Signs of Being Depressed’

The mother of a North Carolina woman and Carolina Panthers employee who killed her two kids and committed suicide by jumping from an interstate highway bridge on Saturday says she saw no red flags to suggest her daughter would be capable of such a crime.

“Our daughter has never shown any signs of being depressed,” said Patricia Treadway, the mother of Christina Treadway, 34, and grandmother to Christina’s two children, 7-year-old son Isaiah Miller and 3-year-old daughter Iliyah Miller, in brief comments to Charlotte TV station FOX 46 WJZY.

“I want people to know she is a loving mother and would not have done this if she wasn’t so trapped and so alone,” Patricia Treadway said.

In a post on a GoFundMe page created by Christina’s parents, Allen Treadway wrote: “I am her father and we are struggling to understand how something like this could have happened, they were all beautiful souls.”

Writing on his own GoFundMe page, where he supported the Treadways fundraising efforts on behalf of their daughter and grandchildren, the children’s father, Antoine Moore, said: “Just know these kids were treated very well and loved emensley by their mother and father.”

“Christina was a loving mother who loved those children dearly,” he added. “Please allow them to Rest In Peace and allow us time to mourn this horrible event without the negativity. No one will ever know what myself and both families involved are going through. Please keep us all in your prayers.”

Antoine’s father, Greg Moore, said his son and Christina had been in a relationship for about 10 years, and that his son was out with friends when he received a text from Christina saying “she was going to end it all.”

“My children’s mother decided to end her life,” Antoine Moore wrote on his GoFundMe page. “And end my two beautiful kids lives. I am beyond hurt and sad.”

He added: “You never know what a person is going through mentally. My kids were my everything I truly don’t know how my life will go on.”

Christina Treadway put her children’s singing and dancing talents on display in a series of YouTube videos that also featured Christina herself, going by the name Tina Lateena. She worked as a seasonal ticket-taker employed by the Carolina Panthers football team at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Authorities say that after Christina jumped from the bridge of Interstate 485, where she died at the scene, they learned information that directed them to her residence. Police forced their way inside to find the children alone and fatally injured. They later died at Carolina Medical Center.

Police have not shared a motive or revealed the type of the injuries suffered by the children.

Antoine Moore’s mother and the children’s paternal grandmother, Tina Moore, said that Christina “was a great mom. She was really, really a great girl.”

She added: “I love Tina to death, but she was just troubled. I don’t know what happened because she came and stayed at my house for the summer. I don’t know what happen, she just lost it.”

The maternal grandmother, Patricia Treadway, said of her daughter and grandchildren: “They were loved so very much in life and so very much in death.”

Florida Man Killed Ex, Her New Boyfriend and Her Parents — Then Left His Son Alone With Their Bodies

On Thursday, a 32-year-old Florida man was convicted of the 2014 quadruple murders of his ex-girlfriend, her new boyfriend and her parents, according to news reports.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that Adam Matos fatally shot two victims and beat the other two to death with a hammer. He now faces the death penalty for the slayings in Hudson, Florida.

Matos showed no visible reaction to the guilty verdicts, which came a day after he confessed to the killings from the witness stand, the paper reports. Sentencing in the case begins Monday.

Matos committed the crime with his 4-year-old son inside the home, reports the Morning Call. Matos fatally shot ex-girlfriend Megan Brown, 27, who is the child’s mother, along with Brown’s 52-year-old father, Greg Brown, according to WTSP.

Megan’s new boyfriend, 37-year-old Nick Leonard, was beaten to death with a hammer. Matos also used a hammer to fatally beat Megan’s mother, 52-year-old Margaret Brown.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Matos testified in court on Wednesday that paranoia played a part in the killings, which he also claimed were in self-defense.

The bodies of the four victims were found stacked on a berm alongside a nearby road.

The paper claims Matos left his child, who has autism, at Megan’s parents’ home with the corpses while he went to purchase a shovel he planned to bury them with.

Woman Killed by Husband at Football Party Shooting Left Him Because of His Drinking: Friend

Meredith Hight, the Texas woman whose estranged husband fatally shot her Sunday along with seven other people during a football watching party at her Plano residence before being fatally shot by police, left the man because of his drinking, a friend tells PEOPLE.

“She me that Spencer had an alcohol problem and she wanted him to go to rehab but she couldn’t get him to,” Meredith’s friend and hairdresser, Adriana Vaga, tells PEOPLE. “She told me that a doctor said if he would not stop drinking in a year he would die.”

In July, Meredith filed for divorce from her husband of six years, according to Collin County court records. Vaga says her friend realized she had to take care of herself first.

“I told her to do what was best for her so she could move on with her life, because I didn’t want her to feel trapped in this marriage that she didn’t have to stay in,” she says.

According to Meredith’s mother, Spencer was having trouble moving on from the separation.

On Sunday night, Meredith, 27, who was hosting a cookout and football watching party, was fatally shot along with seven of her friends.

Police arrived at the scene and fatally shot Spencer.

Besides Meredith, the deceased victims have been identified as Anthony Michael Cross, 33; Olivia Nicole Deffner, 24; James Richard Dunlop, 29; Darryl William Hawkins, 22; Rion Christopher Morgan, 31; Myah Sade Bass, 28; and 25-year-old Caleb Seth Edwards.

Vaga met the Hights six years ago through a friend, she says. Immediately, she and Meredith hit it off, while Spencer, she recalls, was distant.

“Spencer never talked to me very much but it was kind of weird. I tried talking to him but he kept to himself. I think he was very detached,” Vaga says.

Vaga says when she met Meredith, the couple, who wed in May 2011, were newly married and seemed very much in love. However, things became strained when Spencer was laid off from his job in 2013 and began drinking excessively, Meredith told Vaga.

Meredith, who worked at home for Coca Cola Industries, tried to remain positive but found it difficult because of Spencer’s negativity.

After a few years of trying to make it work, Meredith decided to separate from Spencer, who spent most of his time playing video games or building cigar box ukuleles to sell.

• PEOPLE’s special edition True Crime Stories: 35 Real Cases That Inspired the Show Law & Order is on sale now.

Newly single, Meredith was able to host parties like she had done when she first was married, Vaga says.

“She just had a really positive energy,” Vaga says. “He would hold her back from doing so many . She was being a free spirit.”

The cookout and party Meredith hosted on Sunday was the first party she had hosted since her separation, says Vaga, who was invited but had to work.

Despite everything the couple had been through, Vaga says she knows Meredith was having a hard time with the divorce.

“That had to be hard for her, whether or not she was excited , it was hard. She loved him,” Vaga says.

Spencer’s father, Chester Hight, said his family is devastated by the shooting — grieving the deaths of his son, daughter-in-law and those killed at the party.

“I’m so sorry,” Chester said, according to CBS News. He told the Dallas Morning News, the family is living a “nightmare.”

Vaga says, “I just don’t think anyone deserves to go that way. I don’t understand it and probably none of us ever will.”

Meredith and Spencer’s families could not be reached for comment.

Grandmother, 2 Grandchildren and Good Samaritan Killed When Man With Beer Cans in Trunk Hits Them On Side of Road

Two children and their grandmother were killed Friday after a man who had beer cans in his trunk crashed into them after the family pulled its car over on a California freeway because it was overheating.

Good Samaritan, Jose Prieto, was also killed when he stopped to help the family and exited his car in Fontana off the 10 Freeway at about 12:30 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Jesus Garcia tells PEOPLE.

Authorities say 12-year-old stepsiblings Ailyn Miguel and Isacc Briseno were seated in the backseat when 64-year-old Luis Sanchez’s white Nissan truck slammed into the children’s grandmother, Maria Rodriguez, 58, and Prieto before continuing into the Honda containing the children.

The impact smashed the entire back section of the Honda, Garcia says. “They were stopped on the right shoulder and he hit them at freeway speed,” he says, adding that the Honda’s trunk and back seat ended up in the back of the front seats.

Rodriguez and Prieto were standing outside the Honda with the children’s mother, Maria Briseno, at the time of the accident. Briseno was the sole survivor and was transported to the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.

“You can’t put into words,” Briseno’s cousin Rocio Ramirez told ABC News. “She’s not stable. It’s something that I think is going to take a long time for her to cope with it. It’s tough, she lost both of her kids and her mom.”

Garcia says the family members were on their way to nearby San Bernardino to visit relatives when the crash occurred.

Garcia says Rodriguez had called her husband to tell him that the car had overheated and when he arrived he discovered the horrific aftermath.

“She was the love of my life,” Conrado Rivera, Rodriguez’s husband, told NBC.

Garcia says they found opened beer cans inside of Sanchez’s truck and are waiting for toxicology tests, which could take as long as one month, to determine whether he was under the influence during the crash. He has not been charged.

“He wasn’t arrested at the time so it is going to take a little bit,” says Garcia. “There were some cans in the truck but it doesn’t mean anything really. The impact was so great those cans could have been anywhere. We don’t know. It is part of the investigation.”

Garcia says Sanchez was on his way home from work when the incident occurred.

According to a Gofundmepage, Prieto was described as someone who “was always there to help others. He was a man of God and believed in helping others in need. His love for God always showed on his face.”

Garcia says Prieto’s car, which was on the shoulder and had no passengers, was hit as well. It crossed over several lanes and hit the center divider wall, but no injuries resulted.

“It was weird nobody else got hit,” he says. “The road was packed. On Friday the 10 Freeway in this area is heavily traveled.”

Bill O’Reilly’s ‘Killing Patton’ Movie Gets Killed By Fox’s NatGeo

Bill O’Reilly’s film “Killing Patton” has officially been killed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, O’Reilly’s latest movie adaptation of his best-selling “Killing” book series has been scrapped by the National Geographic Channel ― but apparently not for the reasons you’re thinking.

Despite multiple sexual harassment claims against him, and Fox News, which is also owned by 21st Century Fox, severing ties with O’Reilly, NatGeo told THR the movie was just “a difficult project to crack creatively.”

The statement continued, “Like most projects in development, it didn’t go the distance, so we passed on it.”

The movie, which is about World War II General George S. Patton, was announced in 2015 and scheduled to premiere in 2019. Four of O’Reilly’s other “Killing” films ― “Killing Jesus,” “Killing Kennedy,” “Killing Reagan” and “Killing Lincoln” ― have reportedly done well for NatGeo since 2013. THR called them “ratings drivers.”

Still, the network reportedly did not mention the allegations against O’Reilly in its statement. So, yeah, “Killing Patton” was just tough to “crack creatively.” Sure. Totally.

Family of 5-Year-Old Boy Killed by Atlanta Restaurant’s Revolving Wall Speaks Out: He ‘Had a Hug for Everyone’

The family of Charlie Holt, the 5-year-old boy who was killed after he became caught in a rotating wall at a restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday, is speaking out after their son’s tragic death.

“Charlie Holt was the sweetest, most accepting, and lovable child who had a hug for everyone. He never met a person or an animal whom he did not immediately love,” the family said in a statement. “Everyone was his friend. His thirst for knowledge and adventure was infectious. Everyone so loved sweet little Charlie.”

At 3:26 p.m. on Friday, the Atlanta Police responded to a call about an injured child at the Sun Dial restaurant located on the 72nd floor of the Westin Hotel.

“The floor of the restaurant rotates clockwise to offer views of the city. The family was seated at a window table. At some point the child wandered away from the table,” the police confirmed in a written statement to PEOPLE. “Somehow, the child became lodged between the wall and a table as the dining area rotated. The rotating floor automatically shut off. The Westin’s security staff and employees were able to dislodge the child. However, the child sustained critical injuries and later died at the hospital.”

The young boy was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries that afternoon. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Charlie and his parents were visiting from Charlotte, North Carolina.

The restaurant is expected to remain closed until further notice, a spokesperson told the outlet.

“In lieu of flowers and to honor him, the Charlie Holt Memorial Fund has been established to preserve his memory and to allow children to fulfill the dreams that Charlie himself was unable to experience,” the family said.

Eli Roth On Being ‘Almost Killed’ By Fire While Filming ‘Inglourious Basterds’

Quentin Tarantino films have a distinctive style, most recognizably characterized by a crazy amount blood and guts. In one of the more memorable scenes from his 2009 revenge-on-the-Nazis movie “Inglourious Basterds,” Sgt. Donny Donowitz, aka “The Bear Jew,” literally shoots Hitler’s face off in a burning French cinema. The sequence is unforgettable, but it almost came at the cost of several lives, according to Eli Roth, the actor who played Donowitz.

When Roth dropped by HuffPost Live to discuss his Shark Week talk show “Shark After Dark,” host Josh Zepps asked about the scene and the danger it created for the cast and crew.

“Yeah, we were almost killed doing that sequence,” Roth replied casually.

With the set being built on a “fire-stage,” the fires in the scene were supposed to be controlled. But when the scene was actually filmed, with all the final set pieces like flags and seats actually in the room, the fires grew much bigger and hotter than expected.

“[The flames] were spreading so exponentially,” Roth remembered. “They said if we were in there another 15 seconds, the stage we were on would have collapsed and we all would have been killed.”

Roth and the crew luckily got out right before the situation could have taken a turn for the worst, but clearly no one is safe in Tarantino’s world.

Watch Roth discuss this near-disaster in the video above, and click here for his full HuffPost Live conversation.

Tracy Morgan Settles With Wal-Mart Over Fatal Crash That Killed Actor’s Friend And Injured Three Others

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Actor-comedian Tracy Morgan has settled his lawsuit against Wal-Mart over a New Jersey highway crash that killed one man and left Morgan and two friends seriously injured.

A filing in federal court in Newark on Wednesday refers to a confidential settlement reached by the two sides.

Morgan’s lawyer hasn’t responded to a message seeking comment.

Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. calls it an “amicable settlement.” Details haven’t been disclosed.

A Wal-Mart truck slammed into the back of a limo van carrying Morgan and the others back from a show in Delaware last June. Comedian James “Jimmy Mack” McNair was killed. Morgan suffered head trauma, a broken leg and broken ribs.

Wal-Mart reached a settlement with McNair’s two children in January.

The truck driver, a man from Jonesboro, Georgia, faces several criminal charges, including death by auto, in state court. He has pleaded not guilty. He wasn’t a defendant in Morgan’s federal lawsuit.

‘COPS’ Crew Member Killed By Officer’s Bullet While Filming Armed Robbery In Nebraska

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — When the call came from an officer who needed help facing an armed robber at a fast-food restaurant, two members of a reality television show riding along with Omaha police hustled to record the confrontation.

In the chaotic scene that unfolded, one crew member was struck by “friendly fire” from one of the officers, a bullet slipping past his bulletproof vest and killing him, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said Wednesday. The robbery suspect was also killed. The weapon he was carrying turned out to be a pellet gun, though it looked and sounded so real that both witnesses and officers were fooled, Schmaderer said.

Bryce Dion, 38, of Boston, the audio supervisor for “Cops,” is the first crew member of the long-running TV show to be killed while filming police in action, executives with the show’s production company said. Police identified the robbery suspect as 32-year-old Cortez Washington, who was on parole from Missouri for a robbery conviction.

Schmaderer told reporters that police and prosecutors have reviewed the “Cops” video of Tuesday’s shooting and found that the officers “had no choice” but to open fire, though a grand jury will still be tasked with investigating.

Schmaderer said the incident began when drive-thru customers alerted Detective Darren Cunningham — on his way to a different robbery scene in midtown Omaha — to an armed robbery at a Wendy’s. Cunningham called for backup, and Officers Brooks Riley and Jason Wilhelm — along with Dion and a “Cops” cameraman — arrived at the restaurant within 15 seconds, Schmaderer said.

The “Cops” crew followed the officers into the restaurant. There, police confronted a hooded and masked man. The cameraman darted into the dining area, crouched behind a low wall and held up his camera to record the confrontation. But Dion didn’t make it past the glass-enclosed entrance to the restaurant. Almost immediately, Schmaderer said, the suspect raised his gun and fired twice.

Schmaderer said three witnesses described Washington firing his gun directly at Cunningham and Riley. “The witnesses described hearing the suspect’s handgun being fired and seeing the slide recoil with the shots,” he said.

Officers returned fire, hitting Washington, who still managed to run from the store. Officers continued firing as Washington — his gun still pointed at police — entered the glass vestibule, Schmaderer said. It was then that a bullet hit Dion in the chest, Schmaderer said.

Washington collapsed in the restaurant parking lot.

After the shooting, police discovered that Washington’s weapon was an air gun that shoots only plastic pellets.

Washington’s criminal record included an accessory to robbery conviction from Missouri for which he was on parole. He moved to Nebraska in September 2013, and his parole was due to expire in June 2017.

“Cops” started on Fox in 1989 and is now shown on the Spike network. According to the “Cops” website, the show has been filmed in at least 140 U.S. cities and three foreign countries.

Langley Productions President John Langley and Executive Producer Morgan Langley described Dion as talented — “one of our best” — who had worked for the show for seven years.

“He did something that he loved and was passionate about,” Morgan Langley said. “We’ve been very fortunate over the years; we’ve never had an incident like this. Now we’re dealing with it, and it’s a very sad day for us.”

In 2010, a TV crew for the A&E reality show “The First 48” recorded a Detroit police raid in which a 7-year-old girl was accidentally killed by an officer. That incident highlighted concerns about whether TV cameras influence police behavior, perhaps encouraging showboating. But some experts and officers believe TV crews increase accountability.

Schmaderer bristled at the suggestion that his officers overreacted knowing that cameras were recording them, calling it “absolutely ridiculous.”

The police chief said he accepted the invitation from “Cops” to film in Omaha in the name of transparency. “Personally, I will live with this forever,” Schmaderer said. “If I’d have known that this would happen, of course, I wouldn’t have done it.”

Archie Killed: Adored Comic Book Character To Die In ‘Life With Archie’ (VIDEO)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Not even Archie Andrews is immortal in the world of comics.

Archie Comics announced Tuesday that the famous comic book character will heroically sacrifice himself while saving the life of a friend in a July installment of “Life with Archie,” a comic book series that tells the story of grown-up renditions of Archie and his Riverdale gang. “We’ve been building up to this moment since we launched ‘Life with Archie’ five years ago and knew that any book that was telling the story of Archie’s life as an adult had to also show his final moment,” Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater said in a statement.

Archie’s final moments will be detailed in “Life with Archie” No. 36, while issue No. 37 will jump forward a year and focus on his friends Jughead, Betty, Veronica and Reggie honoring the legacy of their red-headed pal.

Archie first appeared in comics in 1941 and went on to become a colorful icon of wholesomeness.

In recent years, Archie Comics has tackled such issues as gay characters and the zombie apocalypse in Archie’s fictional hometown of Riverdale. However, Archie himself won’t need to rise from the grave. The freckle-faced character will still be alive and well in other series.

That Time My Toaster Tried to Killed Me

Devil Toaster of Death

In my daily life, I take a lot of modern conveniences for granted.

If a webpage takes more than two seconds to load; I start to lose it. If my cell phone doesn’t get absolutely perfect reception everywhere I go; it’s a travesty.

Even though it might feel like it sometimes, my life doesn’t exactly hang in the balance if these products don’t work perfectly. There is, however, a whole host of technology, big and small, that I, like most of us, rely on to get through my daily routine both alive and unscathed.

Take the toaster for example.

This wonderfully simple machine turns regular bread into delicious, hot toast at the push of a button. Even more amazingly, it automatically turns off when it’s finished, making that ubiquitous “pop” or “ding” noise to let me know that it has completed it’s task. This fact allows me to do other things whilst making toast without the worry of potentially burning the house down.

That is, until that time my toaster tried to kill me.

Yesterday, my toaster didn’t pop. While I was in another room browsing the internet looking at pictures of cats working, it continued to cook, burn and nearly ignite my precious toast and — more importantly — my apartment.

Luckily for me, my smoke detectors have working batteries — you’d be surprised how many don’t — and I was able to rush in and unplug the smoldering toaster before it completely caught on fire. My toast, however, was, well, toast. It resembled a bread-shaped charcoal briquette in a BBQ, a completely red-hot ember.

As I opened windows, set up fans and tried to force the significant amount of smoke out of the apartment, I chuckled to myself.

“I can’t believe I almost set my apartment on fire making toast. What kind of idiot can’t operate an everyday, benign appliance like a toaster? Did I really just have a brush with death by toaster?”

Well, since I already had my browser open, I decided to check. What I found was pretty startling. It turns out, I’m not the only toast-challenged person out there.

It seems that toasters and toaster fires are responsible for more than 700 deaths per year worldwide. That’s right, toasters kill more people than sharks, snakes — in the United States, at least — and spiders combined.

A search for “toaster” in the recalls section of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website reveals 32 notices of toaster recalls. A whole host of dangers are represented from spontaneous ignition to electrical shock hazard.

Does this mean I should fear my toaster in the way that many people fear the aforementioned insects and animals? Of course not.

It does mean that I should pay more attention to it when it’s in use and look for signs that it’s not safe. This particular toaster had been periodically jamming and burning toast — albeit to a much lesser degree — for a while now. Had I realized how dangerous this actually was, I would have been in the market for a new toaster a long time ago.

I wonder if this one is still available?
