Concept Korea Expands Support for Korean Designers in U.S. Market

Concept Korea wants to help Korean designers beyond New York Fashion Week.
The organization, which is formed out of Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism agency, came to New York 10 years ago with the goal of providing Korean designers with the resources to have a show during New York Fashion Week. Successful alumni from the program include Kai, Beyond Closet and Juun.J.
But according to Misun Song, project director of Concept Korea, the designers have requested more help in the U.S. market, which is why Concept Korea is launching The Select, a showroom that opened this week that will feature the spring collections from 10 Korean designers including Nohant, Lie, Wnderkammer, Bmuet(te), Kye, Beyond Closet, The Centaur, SWBD, Hidden Forest Market and Heohwan Simulation. The showroom is located at 62 Greene Street in New York.
“We allow designers to do a show twice a year and then after that they disconnect from the market,” said Song. “We heard from a lot of designers that they would like a more permanent space in the U.S.”
The showroom will serve as a space where buyers can discover brands and conduct business, but it will also be a venue for pop-ups that will be open

South Korea Has A New President, But His Hot Bodyguard Is Stealing The Show

After a year-long scandal surrounding South Korea’s former president, the country finally swore in their new leader, Moon Jae-in, this week. Moon represents a turning point for the country whose government was embroiled in a high-profile corruption scandal.

And that’s all well and good, but there’s someone in the new president’s camp who is causing a different type of scandal.

His name is Choi Young-jae, according to the Korea Times, but you may know him on Twitter as the new South Korean president’s hot bodyguard.

Choi is said to be a part of President Moon’s “handsome brigade,” a term coined by Korean media and given to the group of apparently good-looking individuals who have been selected to be the “attractive public face of the new administration,” according to the Korea Times.

Even in the attractive presidential bunch, Choi’s smoldering good looks have captured the internet’s heart.

Twitter user Elena Yip, who was one of the first people to publicly praise the distractingly handsome bodyguard, even imagined a romantic storyline for Choi that would fit right into passionate Korean drama TV.

The way he’s always photographed staring sternly into the crowd makes for the perfect inspiration for fan fiction.

After pictures of Choi went viral this week, South Korean blog AllKpop.com did the internet a favor and unleashed even more photos of the now-famous bodyguard.

No one seemed to mind the additional eye-candy, but, sadly, that’s all that Choi can ever be for most people. Korea’s Special Warfare Command told the Korea Times that Choi is “‘unfortunately’ married and has two daughters.”

Fans of Moon’s bodyguard will just have to find other ways to get the man’s attention.

In addition to protecting one of South Korea’s most prized assets, Choi is also doing the world another favor: He’s obliterating the stereotype that Asian men are weak and unattractive.

Thank you, President Moon, for introducing one of your finest protectors to the internet. Our collective thirst thanks you.

To Dream of Pigs: Travels in South and North Korea

The scariest place on earth.’ So said President Bill Clinton on his visit to the no-man’s land between South and North Korea. The minefields and barbed wire mark the jagged edge of world peace. If the world is to see a nuclear war, Korea is the likely flashpoint. The contrast between the two Koreas – the dynamism of the South confronting the oppression of the North – could not be more stark. North Korea Blames U.S. For Shutting Down Its Internet, Says Obama Was Behind ‘The Interview’ Release

HYUNG-JIN KIM, Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea called President Barack Obama “a monkey” and blamed the U.S. on Saturday for shutting down its Internet amid the hacking row over the comedy “The Interview.”

North Korea has denied involvement in a crippling cyberattack on Sony Pictures but has expressed fury over the comedy depicting an assassination of its leader Kim Jong Un. After Sony Pictures initially called off the release in a decision criticized by Obama, the movie has opened this week.

On Saturday, the North’s powerful National Defense Commission, the country’s top governing body led by Kim, said that Obama was behind the release of “The Interview.” It described the movie as illegal, dishonest and reactionary.

“Obama always goes reckless in words and deeds like a monkey in a tropical forest,” an unidentified spokesman at the commission’s Policy Department said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

He also accused Washington for intermittent outages of North Korea websites this week, after the U.S. had promised to respond to the Sony hack.

There was no immediate reaction from the White House on Saturday.

According to the North Korea commission’s spokesman, “the U.S., a big country, started disturbing the Internet operation of major media of the DPRK, not knowing shame like children playing a tag.”

The commission said the movie was the results of a hostile U.S. policy toward North Korea, and threatened the U.S. with unspecified consequences.

North Korea and the U.S. remain technically in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. The rivals also are locked in an international standoff over the North’s nuclear and missile programs and its alleged human rights abuses. The U.S. stations about 28,500 troops in South Korea as deterrence against North Korean aggression.

U.S. Weighs Response To Sony Hack Blamed On North Korea

By David Brunnstrom

WASHINGTON, Dec 18 (Reuters) – The United States was considering possible options on Thursday in response to a major cyber attack on Sony Pictures blamed on North Korea, amid calls for tougher sanctions on Pyongyang to cut it off from the global banking system.

U.S. experts say options for the Obama administration could include cyber retaliation and financial sanctions but the effect of any response could be limited given North Korea’s isolation.

Hackers who said they were incensed by a film on the fictional assassination of North Korea’s leader attacked Sony Corp last month, leaking documents that drew global headlines and distributing unreleased films on the Internet. It appeared to be an unprecedented victory for Pyongyang and its abilities to wage cyber warfare.

On Wednesday, Sony cancelled next week’s theatrical release of the $ 44 million raunchy comedy, “The Interview”, citing decisions by several theater chains to hold off showing the film. The hacker group that broke into Sony’s computer systems had threatened attacks on theaters that planned to show it.

U.S. government sources said on Wednesday that U.S. investigators had determined that the attack was “state sponsored” and that North Korea was the government involved.

One U.S. government source said Washington may soon officially announce its conclusion that North Korea was behind the attack.

Political analysts, including Joel Wit of the 38 North Korea project at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, questioned how easy it would be to enforce sanctions and to ensure the support of China, which is North Korea’s biggest economic partner, its neighbor and long-time ally.

The United States has a deep economic relationship with China but is sharply at odds with Beijing over Washington’s allegations of cyber spying by Chinese state units on U.S. concerns.

North Korea has denied it was behind the Sony hacking, but security experts in Washington said it was an open secret Pyongyang was responsible.

On Wednesday, the White House National Security Council said the U.S. government was working to bring the perpetrators to justice, and was considering “a range of options in weighing a potential response.”

The Republican chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Ed Royce, said the United States should impose new penalties on the already heavily sanctioned North Korea that would “wall off” the country from the international banking system.

“We have the option … you freeze the accounts at the banks and you tell the institutions ‘you’re either going to do business with the United States, or you can do business with North Korea’,” Royce told the Hugh Hewitt radio show.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation warned theaters and other businesses associated with “The Interview” on Tuesday that they could be targeted in cyber attacks, according to a copy of the document reviewed by Reuters.

Several U.S. national security officials told Reuters the government had no credible evidence, however, of a physical threat to movie theaters. (Additional reporting by Jim Finkle in Boston and Mark Hosenball and Matt Spetalnick in Washington; Editing by David Storey and Grant McCool)

White House Says ‘Sophisticated Actor’ Hacked Sony, Declines To Blame North Korea

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says evidence shows the hack against Sony Pictures was carried out by a “sophisticated actor” with “malicious intent.”

But spokesman Josh Earnest is declining to blame North Korea. Earnest says he doesn’t want to get ahead of investigations by the Justice Department and the FBI.

A U.S. official says federal investigators have linked North Korea to the attack. The official spoke on condition of anonymity earlier this week.

Sony has canceled the Christmas Day release of “The Interview” after many theaters said they would hold off on showing the film.

Threats have been made against theaters planning to show the film, which is a comedy about a plot to assassinate North Korea’s leader.

War is usually portrayed in the popular media as the firing of weapons and the movement of troops, ships and aircraft. Occasionally a movie such as M*A*S*H will show another side of war such as the medical. But we don’t often hear about the logistical operations: the furnishing of food, water, supplies, and laundry and bath facilities.Bob Ringma, as a Canadian officer in the army during the Korean conflict, was assigned to the Mobile Laundry and Bath Unit – the MLBU. It was his responsibility to move huge vans and personnel to locations near the Front where there was some form of running water, so he could provide weary troops with the luxury of a shower and clean clothing. The process of locating these sites was in itself an adventure.
