Concept Korea Expands Support for Korean Designers in U.S. Market

Concept Korea wants to help Korean designers beyond New York Fashion Week.
The organization, which is formed out of Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism agency, came to New York 10 years ago with the goal of providing Korean designers with the resources to have a show during New York Fashion Week. Successful alumni from the program include Kai, Beyond Closet and Juun.J.
But according to Misun Song, project director of Concept Korea, the designers have requested more help in the U.S. market, which is why Concept Korea is launching The Select, a showroom that opened this week that will feature the spring collections from 10 Korean designers including Nohant, Lie, Wnderkammer, Bmuet(te), Kye, Beyond Closet, The Centaur, SWBD, Hidden Forest Market and Heohwan Simulation. The showroom is located at 62 Greene Street in New York.
“We allow designers to do a show twice a year and then after that they disconnect from the market,” said Song. “We heard from a lot of designers that they would like a more permanent space in the U.S.”
The showroom will serve as a space where buyers can discover brands and conduct business, but it will also be a venue for pop-ups that will be open

Watch Otto Warmbier’s Wistful Graduation Speech Before North Korean Captivity: ‘This Is the End of One Great Show’

Otto Warmbier showed off his warmth, humor and humanity in an evocative speech the salutatorian delivered at his 2013 high school graduation.

The 22-year-old Ohio native, who was released from imprisonment in North Korea in a coma on Tuesday, waxed nostalgic about their tight-knit community during his speech to his fellow Wyoming High School graduates.

“We know where everyone is going next year. We know where everyone has come from. We know how to make each other comfortable,” he said. “We know when someone is struggling, and we come together as a class to make things better.”

Warmbier, a University of Virginia student, was sentenced to 15 years hard labor for allegedly stealing a North Korean propaganda poster from a staff-only area of his Pyongyang hotel. He was in the country as part of a four-day, three-night tour with Young Pioneers Tours, a Chinese company that markets itself as providing “budget travel to destinations your mother would rather you stayed away from.”

Doctors who examined Warmbier at University of Cincinnati Health determined that he has “extensive loss of brain tissue” and shows “no signs of understanding language.” They described his current condition as “unresponsive wakefulness.”

North Korea reportedly told a U.S. official that Otto contracted botulism and slipped intothe coma after taking a sleeping pill. The country said they released the college student on “humanitarian grounds.”

His father, Fred Warmbier, broke down during a press conference Thursday while talking about his son.

“Otto, I love you and I’m so crazy about you, I’m so glad you’re home, you are such a great guy,” he said. “My family has been rock solid throughout this, we have supported one another.”

Back in 2013, Warmbier’s graduation speech displayed his love of school and community when he spoke about his attempts to find the perfect quote to sum up their high school class — and was shocked when he found it while watching the series finale of The Office and heard a phrase uttered by actor Ed Helms.

“I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them,” Warmbier says, quoting Helms’ character, Andy Bernard.

“To me, that one sentence completely captures the feeling of this graduation,” he says. “This is our season finale. This is the end of one great show, but just the beginning to hundreds of new spin-offs.”

Later, Warmbier ended his speech on an equally wistful note.

“This isn’t our last day together as Wyoming’s High School class of 2013. Tomorrow morning we will all belong to another class, another job or another city. No matter where we go or what we do, though, we will always have this group here … We’ll have the support of all of these people around us. We’ve have the knowledge we gained as a group. And we’ll have the reruns, the memories we created to be played over and over again.”

This K-Pop Band With No Korean Members Is Making People Angry

An unconventional K-pop group is attempting to dominate the Korean music industry, but the genre’s fans aren’t exactly singing its praises. 

EXP Edition, a K-pop boy band that doesn’t have a single Korean member, just released a new music video for their song “Feel Like This.” While the mostly-white, American group’s video made headlines, the release also opened up a discussion about the band’s place in the Korean music industry. 

After seeing the band sing in Korean and adopt K-pop style, Asians across the internet definitely weren’t afraid to sound off on the subject. And let’s just say, many of them won’t be listening to EXP Edition on repeat. 

The band, which calls itself “a fresh hybrid of K-pop,” actually started out back in 2014 as South Korean artist Bora Kim’s master’s degree thesis project at Columbia University. Kim explained that her goal was to explore identity politics, masculinity and other topics. 

“I was thinking about cultural flow, or the relationship of dominant culture and peripheral culture, and how that is interwoven with one’s identity or one’s national identity,” Kim, who initially pulled in friends Karin Kuroda and Samantha Shao to help with the band, explained. “I wanted to see what would happen if I made American boys into K-pop performers, by teaching them how to sing in Korean and act like Korean boys, and complicate this flow/appropriation even more…”

But since then, the band has grown to be much more than a college project and its members have even relocated to Seoul to infiltrate the Korean market. With this new single, however, dedicated K-pop fans don’t seem happy with the American group. Many called EXP out for appropriating Korean culture, since none of the members have Korean roots. In fact, shortly before moving to Korea, they admitted that they knew very little about the culture. 

“We haven’t been introduced to much of the culture,” Koki Tomlinson, the sole Asian, half-Japanese member of the group, told Fusion last year. “We have a very basic understanding of it, just because we’ve really only listened to K-pop.”

Several also criticized the group’s performance quality, asking why the band didn’t incorporate any choreography, an iconic element to K-pop, in their video. But one of the most vocalized criticisms was the way in which the all-American group decided to enter an Asian music industry when Asian artists and those of Asian descent barely ever make it in America’s. 

Indeed, Asian artists have had a tough time succeeding as they’ve often been rejected for “looking” Asian. Harlemm Lee, an artist of Chinese and Filipino descent, won the NBC reality show “Fame” in 2003 and even scored a record contract. However, he still struggled to have a successful career.  

“In terms of finding an advocate in the industry, the Asian thing has been the critical factor,” Lee told The New York Times years ago. “You don’t fit.”

The Korean music industry is one place where Asians dominate and some K-pop fans feel there’s a double standard at play when a completely non-Korean band just slides in. 

The criticisms haven’t deterred Kim and her crew from continuing their work, though. She told The Huffington Post in an email that she admits cultural appropriation is an issue, but insists that’s not what her group is doing. She feels the band isn’t appropriating because they are immersed in the K-pop scene. 

“K-pop has become an important part of our identity (professionally and personally) and that no one can deny. We are living, breathing, creating K-pop, collaborating with people in the K-pop industry every day,” she said. “So to conclude, if you ask me if we’re appropriating K-pop, I’m going to say No … We are already genuinely a part of K-pop.”

Well, if the new music video serves as any indication of their style and vibe, the band is undeniably off to a rocky start.

Four South Korean design talents are gearing up to present their fall collections at men’s fashion week in London. The Korea Creative Content Agency, a government-sponsored organization, is staging the showcase, which runs Friday to Monday at 180 The Strand.

Korean American Artist Nam June Paik Inspires Elementary School Students

They filed in, one by one, a long line of fourth- and fifth-grade students, quiet and well-behaved until they crossed the threshold of the Asia Society gallery. And then, one by one, they gasped, cried out, and– in the case of one young boy– jumped and nearly fell on landing. “Oh, man!” said one of the students. “Check out my robot!”

A months-long project culminated May 19 when children from four New York City public schools saw their own work on the walls and the gallery floors of a major cultural institution. Each fall, Asia Society invites students and teachers to a major exhibition at the museum, then works in partnership with Studio in a School to help the students craft their own art inspired by the show. This year marked the 22nd year of the program, and the original exhibition featured the work of technology-obsessed contemporary Korean American artist Nam June Paik, whose work with robots and televisions starting in the 1960s and 1970s presaged many social and technological advances of the 21st century. The students from P.S. 297 in Brooklyn, P.S. 75 in Manhattan, and P.S. 87 and P.S. 182 in the Bronx used materials and concepts that the late Korean American artist would have recognized to create robotic suit jackets; a “pet” made from the chassis of a vacuum cleaner; a tree showing the evolution of the telephone; and other imaginative works.

“I’m famous,” said one young boy as adults snapped photos of him and the robot he had helped design.

Among those on hand for the opening was Agnes Gund, President Emerita of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), long-time arts patron and founder and chair of Studio in a School. In the Asia Society auditorium prior to the gallery tour, Gund congratulated “these brilliant young artists” for their creativity and skill. She praised the “thoughtful collaboration” among Studio in a School, the schools’ teachers and principals, and Asia Society, and gave special thanks to Nancy Blume, head of arts education at Asia Society.

Gund singled out the piece Baby from the series Robot Family Sculptures, the creation of five boys from P.S. 75 in Manhattan. The piece was built with, among other materials, a basketball for a body, a videocamera lens hood for its mouth and energy-efficient light bulbs for hands.

“I think it’s a terrific work of art,” Gund said, “and I happen to have an interest in basketball.” She explained, to laughter from the students, that she was a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers and had watched their win over the Atlanta Hawks the previous night.

“We fought a lot about how to make it great,” said Isaac, one of the students who designed Baby. “I think Mr. Nam June Paik would have liked it.”

Just a few feet away from Baby lay Dog, also part of the Robot Family Sculptures series and a creation of Chloe and Stephanie from P.S. 75 in Manhattan. This piece, it turns out, had been inspired by something missing from Asia Society’s Nam June Paik show.

“There were robot moms and dads but no pets, no animals,” Chloe said. “So this is kind of based on his art, but kind of our own idea, too.”

The students’ art will be on display at Asia Society Museum until July 19 in an exhibition titled Inspired by Nam June Paik: Becoming Robot. The show and this partnership with Studio in a School is one of the coolest things we do, and just as much a part of our mission as the visits of Asian leaders to our stage. The idea behind both is the same — building bridges of understanding between the people of Asia and the U.S.

“You are the youngest artists to exhibit at the Asia Society Museum,” Peggy Loar, Asia Society’s Interim Museum Director, told the children. “And this is a museum where some of the artists were born three thousand years ago.” Loar spoke of the power of a young person’s creativity and working as a team. Before the children left, she invited them to return with their families and receive free admission to see the exhibition and share their accomplishments with their loved ones. “Just come in,” she said, “and say you are one of the artists featured in Inspired by Nam June Paik.”

Kim Jong Un is an extraordinary human being if a teacher’s guide being sent to North Korean schools is any indication.

The guide, Kim Jong Un’s Revolutionary Activities, includes a lot of facts about the North Korean dictator that are — spoiler alert — hard to believe.

For instance, the guide suggests that teachers tell their impressionable students that Kim was able to drive a car at 3, and beat the chief executive of a foreign yacht company in a boating race when he was 9, UPI.com reports.

Korean Coed Street Fashion at Ewha Woman’s University!

This is the second installment in a series introducing key fashion neighborhoods in Seoul, Korea, which has become quite a fashion hub and a hotbed of street fashion, although you may not have heard  this yet. It’s my goal to familiarize Western readers  with the fact that parts of Seoul are now hotter than Harajuku in terms of fashion creativity and dynamicism, even if it lacks the Cosplay flash. But that’s what makes the street fashion in Seoul all the more real and interesting. These are the fashions of everyday Koreans and those who follow them sartorially, and these are streets worth watching.
After one of the student interns bravely grab her and combine her to pose, turns out she was with one of the many Chinese tourists who are legion at the Ewha front gate, which is apparently a major tourist destination for the Chinese who come to Korea, an

Ewha Woman’s University is one of the oldest universities in Seoul, founded as many were by American Protestant missionaries, and considered to be one of the top universities a woman can attend in general, right behind what Koreans call the “SKY” universities, which is short for Seoul National, Korea, and Yonsei Universities. Doesn’t fit into the acronym, but it’s up there bumping shoulders of those universities in terms of quality and reputation. Now, despite being a women’s University, one has to remember that Korea is still defined by the gender norms of America in the 1960s. Boys are boys and girls are girls, especially at a women’s University, with the social norm being to wear heels and a dress, full-on makeup, and have every hair on the head in perfect place. Ewha Woman’s University is infamous for what’s students only half-jokingly called the “9 a.m. morning fashion show” in which the front gate is stormed by freshly dressed and fashionable women rushing to their first class of the day amidst a cacophony of click-clacking high heels. This is not to say that every woman in Korean college dresses this way, but I think it would be safe for the non-initiated to completely eliminate any idea of the American-style undergraduate rolling out of bed and into class in one’s pajamas and slippers or without at least a long session spent in front of the makeup mirror.

I started out shooting a bit of Ewha Women’s University front gate for this story, with three student interns in tow, when a lady with the best Korean-style sports jersey dress ever pops into view. This is one of the most popular styles on the Korean streets this summer and it was apropos that she appeared on the scene just as we arrived, so I had to snap a surreptitious shot of her outfit just in case she decided not to pose for camera willingly.

Was out shooting a bit of Ewha Women's University front gate for a story on that neighborhood I'm planning for the Huff Post, with 3 student interns in tow, and a lady with the best Korean-style sports jersey dress ever pops into view.

After one of the student interns bravely grabbed her and got her to pose, it turned out she wasone of the many Chinese tourists who are legion at the Ewha front gate these days, which is apparently a major tourist destination for the Chinese who come to Korea, which made sense since we spotted entire tour groups led by guides with flags right in the area we started shooting.  This young lady turned out to be a confident  street fashion model possessed of a Mona Lisa smile. Turns out she’s an exchange student studying somewhere and Seoul and bought her sports jersey dress in Korea.

Her and her companion were quite the couple and comfortable with the camera. We were actually pretty wise to arrive on campus around noon time, since we are able to find several real students to shoot in their natural environment actually going and coming from class. The Idae area (as it is known to Koreans by its Korean abbreviation of “Ewha” and University” (ewha+dae-hak-kyo=”idae”) is renowned for its young female fashion, but this is often a misleading place for street fashion photographers to shoot since is a major watering hole for women wanting to be fashionable, whether their students are not. So after school hours or on the weekends, most of the women in the area are not representative of young Korean female student fashion. We made sure to be on the spot during the prime hours for actually catching students attending the campus.

We immediately spotted some girls in a coffee shop we went to have a quick meeting and noticed the “West Coast” sports jerseys and were debating whether not to approach them for picture when I noticed that they were wearing matching jerseys T-shirts and that’s cinched it. We had to get them. Find and it turned out they were also Chinese tourists who had just bought T-shirts in Dongdaemun, which they let us know through Google translate, and were eager to show us the very store where they had just seen these shirts earlier and were eagerly pointing it out as I was taking the pictures. They actually wanted to walk us over and show us the shirts on the rack. However, we didn’t have time.

It seemed like we were mostly catching Chinese tourists, and we were hoping to get more actual students from the University. Since it was lunchtime, we decided that moving in toward the center of campus would yield more Korean students actually attending the university, who would be walking out of classes toward the surrounding area. However, given the fact that most of the Chinese tourists and exchange students we were catching seemed to be very big fans of Korean fashion and were actually better models for current trends than even the Koreans were, this turned out to be a good thing. All of the young Chinese women we caught on film were eager to tell us where they had bought their clothes — and the new Dongdaemun Design Plaza seemed to be a major stop on the fashion train for all of them.

No matter how far we got into the campus, tourists were still legion. Korea, at the very least in Asia, has definitely become a place known for being modern, fashionable, and very cool.

She’s a natural model, like many Korean girls who were trained on a diet of sticker pictures, private photo booths, and cell phone cams. South Korea coined its own word for “selfie” back in around 2004. Young Korean girls our well-trained in the fine art of “selca” (SELf+CAmera) and were uploading their super selfie portraits to eoljjang (best face) sites that became popular around that time as well. The average female Korean college student has about as much de facto amateur modeling experience as the average Western amateur model who has seen the inside of a photo studio.

We ended our little foray into the Ewha Woman’s University with a bit more conservative, representative fare for the Koreans students these days. And her heavily-ornamented gladiator sandals are definitely the thing with the kids these days.

As soon as the day ended and I was sitting in my office, as if on cue, our “awesome” model from a few hours earlier sent me a message about her pictures and we quickly decided that it would be cool to do an impromptu studio session since I had my studio equipment sitting in a box in my office ready to go and all you would need to do is find a white wall in a hallway somewhere. Considering what we had to work with, but also the find the picture we came up with but also surprising. but also, considering the natural talent and these which our model possessed, it’s not really any surprise we got what we did. Definitely one of the best street fashion models I’ve ever bump into — and I don’t think it’s any coincidence that she is a true-blue Ewha student.

Our best model wanted to do a bit of studio after her great street shoot. She is indeed awesome.
