Olivier Lapidus to Headline French Fashion Week Event — in New York

FRENCH TOUCH: His time at Lanvin may have been short-lived, but Olivier Lapidus remains committed to his mission of establishing a “conservatory of French savoir-faire” reconciling “ancient craftsmanship with technology.”
Dedicated to his own “maison” since exiting Lanvin in March after two seasons, following the brand’s acquisition by Chinese conglomerate Fosun Fashion Group, the designer is set to headline the inaugural edition of French Fashion Week — in New York.
Scheduled to run March 27 to 29, 2019, at a venue in Midtown Manhattan, the event, organized by French Touch USA, will present a selection of established and emerging men’s and women’s brands from across the fashion, jewelry, accessories and fashion-tech categories, according to a statement.
Participating brands will present collections in the venue’s French Fashion Room and be given access to a dedicated space for shows as well as networking events.
The program will also include a French Fashion Week awards ceremony, book signings, film screenings and an exhibition of fashion photography, as well as a French pop-up space open to the public.

Olivier Lapidus on His First Day at Lanvin

PARIS — He’s vocal about his passion for new technologies. But will Olivier Lapidus, in his new role as artistic director of Lanvin, succeed in rebooting the house?
The appointment of a relative unknown — unlike his predecessor, Bouchra Jarrar, who parted ways with the house after only 16 months in the job — has been met with head scratching from the fashion community. The unexpected choice has also ruffled the feathers of some of Lanvin’s top brass as a house that’s been through its fair share of turbulence since the ousting of Alber Elbaz in 2015 after a stellar 14-year tenure.
For Delphine Dion, a professor of marketing at the ESSEC Business School in Paris specializing in luxury brand management, Lapidus represents a “very weird” choice. But it’s one that possibly reflects a shift in strategy by the brand’s majority owner to focus on the Chinese market. Especially as Elbaz is proving such a difficult act to follow.

Lanvin Taps Olivier Lapidus as Artistic Director

PARIS — Olivier Lapidus, a designer not well known outside certain Paris fashion circles, is being thrust into the international spotlight as the new artistic director of Lanvin.
His hire was effective Monday and he is expected to show his first Lanvin collection in September for the spring 2018 women’s ready-to-wear season, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.
Lapidus takes over from Bouchra Jarrar, who left Lanvin after only 16 months, as reported on July 7. WWD had already identified Lapidus as a possible successor.
He arrives at the French house as it manages challenging times for wholesale-driven busineses, and multiple internal woes. The company, founded by Jeanne Lanvin in 1889, has been majority owned since 2001 by Taiwan-based media magnate Shaw-Lan Wang. It has seen sales erode for several years after peaking at more than 250 million euros in 2012, according to sources. Last year, the house posted its first loss in more than a decade.
According to sources, orders for women’s collections have been falling at a steep double-digit rate. The brand has also struggled to build a handbag business, a chief pillar for most European fashion firms.
