Fla. Woman Caught on Camera Asking Man to Kill Husband Gets 16 Years, But Lawyer Claims it Was Reality TV Stunt

A Florida woman accused of hiring a hit man to kill her husband in 2009 has been sentenced to 16 years in prison — but her attorney tells PEOPLE his client will appeal the case.

Dalia Dippolito was convicted last month of solicitation of first-degree murder. According to prosecutors, she was recorded on video and audio as she plotted to have Michael Dippolito killed. During her trial, jurors heard her telling an undercover detective she was “5,000 percent sure” she wanted her husband dead.

Circuit Judge Glenn Kelley imposed the sentence on Dippolito, saying that she had acted in a “cold and calculated manner.”

No money ever changed hands between Dippolito and the undercover detective, and Michael Dippolito was unharmed.

Dippolito has maintained that she never intended to go through with the murder-for-hire plot. Her attorneys say the recordings were part of a video project that she was doing along with Michael and her former lover so that the trio could land a reality TV show.

Dippolito’s attorney, Brian Claypool, told jurors that officers with the Boynton Beach Police Department failed to properly investigate the situation because they were eager to capture video footage for the TV show Cops.

Dippolito remains hopeful her conviction will be overturned on appeal, Claypool tells PEOPLE. A 2011 conviction was thrown out on appeal. A retrial last fall ended with a 3-3 hung jury.

“She’s doing surprisingly well, considering,” Claypool says. “She is clinging to her faith during this time.”

Claypool tells PEOPLE that Dippolito’s team has several avenues for appeal.

Throughout the trial, Claypool alerted the judge that one of the jurors was allegedly falling asleep. “She was almost snoring,” he says. “We made two trial complaints on the record, and submitted five affidavits from people who saw her sleeping. Florida caselaw is clear that this is grounds for a new trial.”

If that doesn’t work, the defense will appeal on the grounds that X-rated text messages between Dippolito and her lover — who has since died — were prejudicial hearsay and should not have been read to the jury. Claypool also says that jurors heard unsubstantiated allegations that Dippolito had once tried to kill her husband with antifreeze, and that she had previously tried to hire another hitman.

“There are several grounds for appeal,” says Claypool, “and we intend to pursue them all. My client is not perfect, but she is a mother who didn’t do what they said she did. A lot of the evidence that was introduced was not only irrelevant, but it was extremely prejudicial.”

Prosecutors did not return PEOPLE’s calls for comment.

‘Bachelor In Paradise’ Star Corinne Olympios Hires Top Lawyer Following Scandal

After days of speculation on the “Bachelor in Paradise” scandal, Corinne Olympios, a contestant who allegedly took part in a sexual incident during taping in Mexico last week, is speaking out.

ABC halted production of the show on Sunday over “allegations of misconduct” apparently involving Olympios and fellow cast member DeMario Jackson. Olympios has now hired top Hollywood attorney Marty Singer to represent her throughout Warner Bros.’ investigation into the situation.

In a statement released by her rep, Stan Rosenfield, Olympios characterized the incident as a nightmare becoming reality:

I am a victim and have spent the last week trying to make sense of what happened the June 4. Although I have little memory of that night, something bad obviously took place, which I understand is why production on the show has now been suspended and a producer on the show has filed a complaint against the production.

As a woman, this is my worst nightmare and it has now become my reality. As I pursue the details and facts surrounding that night and the immediate days after, I have retained a group of professionals to ensure that what happened on June 4 comes to light and I can continue my life, including hiring an attorney to obtain justice and seeking therapy to begin dealing with the physical and emotional trauma stemming from that evening.

According to multiple reports, a highly intoxicated Olympios had a sexual encounter with Jackson in a swimming pool while crew members continued filming. Following that, a field producer reportedly filed a formal complaint and Warner Bros. suspended production of the show, sending the rest of the cast back to the U.S.

“Once the investigation is complete,” Warner Bros. said in a statement earlier this week, “we will take appropriate responsive action.”

Jackson, who reportedly claims that the sexual acts were consensual, also spoke out, telling Entertainment Tonight, “I have nothing to say. You know, Corinne’s an awesome girl and that’s all I have to say.” He added of his fans, “Love you all, thank you for the support.”

“Bachelor in Paradise” Season 4, which was set to debut Aug. 8, brings together former contestants from “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” for another shot at love.

At this point, it’s safe to say the show probably won’t go on.

Robert Durst’s Lawyer Believes Interview About Meth Use Was Improperly Obtained

Robert Durst’s statement to Los Angeles prosecutors that he was high on methamphetamine during the filming of the HBO series The Jinx was improperly obtained, his lawyer tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Attorney Dick DeGuerin says prosecutors interviewed Durst without his lawyers present, and the interview should therefore be ruled inadmissible at his upcoming murder trial.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Durst allegedly agreed to speak with prosecutors after his arrest on March 14, 2015 for the murder of his longtime friend and former publicist, Susan Berman.

In the interview, Durst, 73, allegedly said he “had to be… swooped” and “speeding” during some of the more than 20 hours of interview he gave during the filming of The Jinx.

“I was on meth, I was on meth the whole time,” he said, according to a transcript obtained by The Times. “And, when I looked at the little pieces of it, I was going like this and like that. And it was — and it should have been obvious.”

While he refused to address the specific contents of the Los Angeles Times piece, DeGuerin told PEOPLE he suspects the entire interview will be “tossed out” by the judge when Durst’s murder trial begins. (DeGuerin successfully defended Durst in 2003 while he was on trial for allegedly killing and dismembering his Texas neighbor, Morris Black.)

“This interview was given at a time when they should have contacted his lawyers, especially since they know full well who his lawyers are,” DeGuerin says, adding he has already started drafting a motion to suppress the substance of Durst’s interview.

“I am concerned by the prosecution’s actions,” DeGuerin adds. “Even though they have criticized us for talking to the press, they put this interview out there. I feel this is an effort by the prosecution to influence the jury pool.”

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office responded in a statement to PEOPLE that read, “This motion is being litigated in a public forum and involves information that is relevant, material and necessary to refute the false allegations and mischaracterizations made by the defense in their opposition.”

According to the Los Angeles Times article, Durst allegedly spoke with prosecutors for nearly three hours. He even allegedly answered questions about why he didn’t flee the country after learning he was wanted in Berman’s killing.

Durst told the prosecution “inertia” kept him from going on the run.

“I just didn’t really, really, really think that I was gonna end up arrested,” he told them, before saying, “I was the worst fugitive the world has ever met.”

Durst was charged with Berman’s murder in March 2015. His apprehension in New Orleans preceded the airing of the damning final episode of The Jinx, which focused on the 1982 disappearance of Durst’s first wife, Kathleen Durst, while examining Berman’s execution-style killing.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

In the HBO finale, he is heard muttering to himself in a bathroom, “There it is. You’re caught! What the hell did you do? Killed them all, of course.” He was allegedly unaware the filmmaker’s microphones were still recording at the time.

Durst was extradited to Los Angeles in early November, where his impending murder trial will begin in 2017, according to DeGuerin.

He is the only suspect to face charges for Berman’s execution-style shooting death. Her body was discovered inside her home in Beverly Hills, California, in 2000.

Durst pleaded not guilty to her killing in November.

DeGuerin tells PEOPLE Durst has a pre-trial hearing set for Wednesday in Los Angeles, and says a preliminary examination of the evidence in the case must happen no sooner than Feb. 15.

Life Goals: You Can Now Become a Fashion Lawyer

If your style prowess is matched only by your penchant for truth and justice, we might have just found your perfect career path: fashion lawyer.

Fordham University has announced that come next fall, it will have students enrolled in a fashion law program—the first of its kind in the world. The program builds on the school’s earlier offerings, including a fashion-specific course and the CFDA-endorsed Fashion Law Institute, and now allows students to receive master’s degrees.

Fashion law, as explained by the Institute’s site, is described as something that:

embraces the legal substance of style, including all of the issues that may arise throughout the life of a garment, starting with the designer’s original idea and continuing all the way to the consumer’s closet. The diverse categories of law that affect the business of fashion include intellectual property, business and finance, international trade and government regulation, and consumer culture and civil rights. From the historical relationship between clothing and culture to current issues involving the globalization of fashion, the newly defined field of fashion law is made to measure for the modern apparel industry.

The new track will result in students receiving their master of laws, or L.L.M., in the fashion field (classes are also set to include modeling law and sustainability). Interested fashion folk who don’t want to necessarily become lawyers can also benefit: a master of studies in law will offer similar insight that can be used by anyone in the designing or retail worlds.

Diane von Furstenberg, president of the CFDA, said she thinks the new offerings will “help us all as an industry, lawyers or not, better understand, grow, and protect our businesses.” A scan of the past few years’ headlines might prove that the degree is needed now more than ever. Just this month, Isabel Marant came under fire for a blouse in her collection that echoes the signature designs of a community of apparel makers in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Broker, Trader, Lawyer, Spy

In this penetrating work of investigative and historical journalism, Eamon Javers explores the dangerous and combustible power spies hold over international business. Today’s global economy has a dark underbelly: the world of corporate espionage. Using cutting-edge technology, age-old techniques of deceit and manipulation, and sheer talent, spies act as the hidden puppeteers of globalized businesses. They control markets, determine prices, influence corporate decisions, and manage the flow of data and information of some of the world’s biggest corporations. In his gripping and alarming book, Eamon Javers takes the reader inside this hidden global industry. Readers meet the spies who conduct surveillance operations, satellite analysts who peer down on corporate targets from the skies, veteran CIA officers who work for hedge funds, and even a Soviet military intelligence officer who now sells his services to American companies. This industry has tentacles in almost every industry in almost every corner of the globe. Intelligence companies and the spies they employ are setting up fake Web sites to elicit information, trailing individuals and mirroring travel itiner-aries, Dumpster-diving in household and corporate trash, using ultrasophisticated satellite surveillance to spy on facilities, acting as impostors to take jobs within companies or to gain access to corporations, concocting elaborate schemes of fraud and deceit, and hacking e-mail and secure computer networks. The work of this industry can be ingenious, but it also raises crucial moral and legal questions in a world where global conflicts are as likely to be corporation versus corporation as they are to be nation versus nation. This globalized industry is not a recent phenomenon, but rather a continuation of a fascinating history. The story begins with Allan Pinkerton, the nation’s first true “private eye,” and extends through the annals of a rich history that includes tycoons and playboys, presidents and FBI op
