At Least Trump’s Black Music Month Statement Got This Right

President Trump has officially declared June 2017 as African-American Music Appreciation Month.

On Wednesday, Trump continued the annual presidential tradition by issuing this year’s proclamation. In his announcement, President Trump credited the influences of black music pioneers for giving “all Americans” a better understanding of American culture.

“During June, we pay tribute to the contributions African Americans have made and continue to make to American music,” the statement reads. “The indelible legacy of these musicians who have witnessed our Nation’s greatest achievements, as well as its greatest injustices give all Americans a richer, deeper understanding of American culture. Their creativity has shaped every genre of music, including rock and roll, rhythm and blues, jazz, gospel, hip hop, and rap.”

The month-long observance, honoring the vast musical contributions of black artists, was first declared in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter. In 2000, President Clinton signed the African-American Music Bill, which formally established Black Music Month as a national observance.

In this year’s statement, Trump called out such greats like Chuck Berry, Dizzy Gillespie, and Ella Fitzgerald as black musicians who have exemplified how music can bring people together.

“These musicians also remind us of our humanity and of our power to overcome,” the statement reads. “They expressed the soul of blues, gospel, and rock and roll, which has so often captured the hardships of racism and injustices suffered by African Americans, as well as daily joys and celebrations.”

“Their work highlights the power music has to channel the human experience, and they remain a testament to the resilience of all freedom-loving people,” he continued. “We are grateful for their contribution to the cannon of great American art.”

This Is Why You Meet Someone When You Least Expect It (And How To Make It Happen)

Most single people can attest to hearing this advice at least once in their relationship-free lives: “You’ll meet someone when you least expect it.”

Common? Yes. Totally unhelpful? Also yes. For people who are interested in coupling up, “not expecting” to find someone can feel like a seemingly impossible feat.

But why do people say it? According to matchmakers and relationship experts, it’s because it’s true.

“When you’re focused on meeting someone, that stress can be seen from a mile away,” Kelli Fisher, certified life and relationship coach and one half of “The Matchmaking Duo,” told The Huffington Post. “When you don’t have that at the top of your mind and are just enjoying yourself in the moment without any preconceived notions, things can progress organically.”

Instead of actively looking, experts say to focus on these things instead.

1. Pursue your interests and hobbies.

“Get more involved in things that will bring you happiness or peace like hobbies, connecting with friends, family, traveling or reconnecting with your faith. When you’re more fulfilled, the law of attraction kicks in, so people see you with that joy and want that for themselves,” Fisher said.

2. Reconnect with old friends.

“We always see people reconnecting with faith, joining travel or sporting groups, learning something but also being around people with similar values and hobbies as you and also reconnecting with old friends,” Fisher said. There are always “friend-troductions” to be made when you surround yourself with different circles of friends ― you end up meeting people without really even thinking about it.

3. Rethink what you want in a relationship.

Taking a break from actively seeking a partner also gives you the opportunity to figure out exactly what you want from your next relationship, Tana Gilmore, a life and relationship coach (and Fisher’s matchmaking partner), explained. “You can course correct issues and challenges you’ve had in the past with making bad relationship decisions and in turn, attract the kind of mate you deserve and want.”

4. Abandon your checklist.

“I’d tweak the sentence to ‘You find love where you least expect it’ ― in this case, with someone who may not be ‘your type’ or who you were looking for,” Andrea Syrtash, the author of “He’s Just Not Your Type (And That’s a Good Thing”), said. “So many of us get tied to our paper checklists and sometimes overlook great matches who don’t add up on them. But then, you don’t marry a piece of paper.”

5. Look around you.

“In some cases, [the women I interviewed] realized they had chemistry with a friend or officemate they didn’t originally consider romantically, but who made them happy,” Syrtash said. “In other cases, some of these people found love when they took the pressure off of themselves to meet a ‘perfect match.’ They were more present and it made organic connections with people when they weren’t overthinking it.”

6. Don’t deactivate your online dating profile just yet.

Fisher and Gilmore said it’s good to “periodically check” your accounts in the event that while you’re off doing things that make you happy, “someone may be looking for you.”

Trump Will Be Sworn In as the Least Popular President in Four Decades, New Poll Says

When Donald Trump takes the oath of office in just a few short days, he will do so as the least popular president in at least 40 years, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll says.

According to the national poll, just 40 percent of Americans say they have a favorable impression of the president-elect. That’s 21 points lower than President Barack Obama’s departing favorability rating of 61 percent and easily the lowest popularity for an incoming president since 1977, ABC News reports. Trump trails behind former Presidents Obama (79 percent), Bill Clinton (68 percent), George H.W. Bush (65 percent), Ronald Reagan (58 percent) and Jimmy Carter (78 percent).

Even former President George W. Bush — who entered office after a bitter recount fight with Al Gore — was still more popular than Trump at inauguration time, with a 62 percent favorability rating.

Similarly, just 40 percent of Americans polled say they approve of the way Trump has handled the presidential transition. That’s half as many as the roughly 80 percent who approved of the way Obama, Clinton and George H.W. Bush handled their transitions.

On the eve of his inauguration, 52 percent of Americans see Trump as unqualified to be president, compared with 44 percent who say he is qualified. (That’s no vote of confidence, but it’s actually the lowest number of people saying he’s unqualified since he became a candidate.)

True to form, Trump isn’t buying any of it: on Tuesday he took to Twitter to attack the low opinion polling as “rigged.”

The new poll results come as hundreds of thousands of people are preparing to hit the streets of Washington, D.C., to protest the president-elect during his inaugural week, according to NBC News. The Women’s March on Washington — set to take place on Saturday, the day after Trump’s inauguration — is expected to be the largest protest, with hundreds of thousands predicted to participate in the nation’s capitol. Corresponding protests will also be held across the country.

The Department of Homeland Security is estimating an overall attendance of about 800,000 to 900,000 people, including protesters, for Trump’s inauguration. But — despite Trump’s claim of a “record” turnout — that estimate is significantly less than the 1.8 million attendees at Obama’s inauguration in 2009.

How to Handle Divorced Parents at Your Wedding with the Least Drama

Some of my brides and grooms struggle about what to do with their separated or divorced parents at their wedding. The goal, obviously, is for everybody to have fun and avoid any potential drama. As a wedding planner, my goal is to help minimize it so the bride and couple can really enjoy their wedding. To do this often requires some thought and planning ahead so you don’t have to make any decisions on the fly and risk an awkward situation.

If your parents have been divorced a long time and have a copacetic relationship, you might not have anything to worry about. I’ve seated plenty of divorced parents right next to each other – sometimes even with new spouses all in the same row – and everybody behaved appropriately.

The most difficult situation to handle is a recent breakup or divorce – especially if one parent wants to bring their new partner to the wedding and the other isn’t seeing anyone. It can feel like a total slap in the face to the unescorted parents. In these situations, we often suggest that the “single” parent ask a good friend to be their formal escort. It doesn’t fix everything, but it gives them somebody to dance with and they won’t feel like the odd person out.

On several occasions, we’ve had crazy drama because of moms who just couldn’t handle the whole situation. The emotional stress of their daughter or son’s wedding day on top of seeing their ex is hard enough. But when she has to attend the wedding alone and bitter, and he’s there with his new lady friend or wife, it’s like a knife in the back. Sometimes, they compensate with alcohol.

For just that reason, I know of several couples who have asked all parents to leave the dates at home so as to avoid any controversy. Especially when it’s something rather tacky like Dad and his secretary having had an affair that ended the 30-year marriage. The request may cause drama when it’s made – and your parent may have to deal with a shit fit from his new love – but if you let them know early enough that you don’t want them to bring that guest, there’s time for everybody to cool off before the big day arrives.

I’ve had a lot of conversions with inebriated Mothers of the Bride stuck in this sort of situation. They tend to stand, very obviously, apart from the group, or overcompensate by being loud and joking about their ex’s date. When Dad brings someone like the home-wrecking secretary mentioned above, Mom is DYING because the little twit who broke up her marriage is getting a seat of honor next to the man with whom she was supposed to spend the rest of her life. We had one Mother of the Bride get drunk before the ceremony and spend cocktails publicly begging the bride’s father to reconcile. She had to be taken back to the hotel by the bride’s brother in hysterics before dinner.

A couple of moms have fought back, going after men at the wedding to show they haven’t lost their mojo. I don’t care what they do to torture the other wedding guests (except that it embarrasses their children terribly), it’s actually kinda funny to see these cougars stalking prey that went to college with their kids. But when they go after my husband or my staff, it ceases to be cute. Don’t make me ask you to stop touching somebody after he’s already asked you to keep your hands off. That’s just plain tacky. We’re the help.

You need a plan to keep the unsteady parent on solid ground on your wedding day, or through your wedding weekend. Their best friend is your best bet – and talking to your parent’s bestie about your concerns about drama in advance will help them understand you’re asking them to take on the role of babysitter on your wedding day. The bride and groom don’t have time and really, we’re trying to avoid making bad memories that no one will ever forget.

Also, make a point to ask your friends to ask your parents to dance, especially the single parent. A little extra attention from the guests is warranted if it will boost their spirits and keep them distracted.

Plan ahead for the logical questions that come up when handling divorced parents:

– Who will be walking the bride down the aisle?
– Where will everyone be sitting?
– Who should sit with the bride and groom at dinner?
– Who makes the toast on behalf of the bride or groom?

There are simple answers to these questions, but knowing what you’re going to do in advance makes all the difference.

Walking down the aisle
If the bride wants both of her divorced parents to walk her down that aisle, that’s her prerogative. She might not have planned to do that before her parents were divorced, but if she feels like it’s appropriate given the circumstances, she may do whatever she likes. If she wants her mother to walk her down the aisle while her father sits and watches, that’s okay too. But it’s a good idea to let dad know ahead of time so he won’t be surprised and disappointed when it happens. Lots of girls stick to tradition and walk alone with their fathers.

How to Seat Divorced Parents at the Ceremony
If they don’t like each other and prefer not to be in each other’s company, seat the mom in the first row and dad in the second row. That’s what etiquette dictates. It doesn’t matter if they have dates or not, they don’t have to be seated together. Just fill in the row with their own immediate families.

How to Seat Divorced Parents at the Reception
Unless your parents really are good friends post-divorce, don’t try to seat all the parents at a “head table” with the bride and groom. Just give each set of parents (however many there are) their own tables to host and fill them in with your friends who know them and their friends they invited. That way nobody has to awkwardly tread on egg shells through dinner conversation.

Toasting the Bride and Groom
Traditionally, the fathers toast at the wedding, but that’s not really what happens anymore. More often than not, both parents make the toast together, if they’re still married. When they’re divorced, each should be given the opportunity to make a toast. If they decline, that’s fine. But let them decide if they want to offer their own best wished. If one says “oh we can just do it together,” be sure to check with the other one first before assuming anything. Do this ahead of time so nothing embarrassing happens at the main event.

A word of caution: You have to look out for well-meaning (or pot-stirring) family and friends who may introduce uninvited drama into your wedding. My half-sister tried to cause DRAMA at my wedding reception back home when she informed me that our father wanted to dance with my mother. My parents had been divorced 10 years but it was still very acrimonious. When my sister told me about it, I thought it sounded hinky. So I told her I’d check with my mom. Mom said “are you kidding me?” and I told my sister to tell our father not to ask my mom to dance. Problem solved. Five awkward minute delay in my fun, but nothing bad happened. Funny thing is, when I asked my dad about it a few months later, he said he’d never said he wanted to dance with my mom. He’d gotten his licks in by bringing his housekeeper to the reception as a date just to tweak my mom. It worked. So why was my sister messing with her? Hmmm.

Have a plan for how to handle all the usual things – know if you’re going to take full family photos or do separate sets with both sides of your family. Yes, these things do come up and it’s better to be prepared with an answer to the question when it’s asked. If you can clue in the photographer ahead of time about the potential for tension, they can be more sensitive. Make sure your wedding planner is in the loop. If the coordinator at the church is handing the seating, have a private discussion ahead of the wedding rehearsal. An ounce of prevention is worth the peace of mind you can have on your wedding day.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Weddings in Vieques and Sandy Malone Weddings & Events!

Millennials Are The Least Religious Generation Yet, And Here’s The Surprising Reason Why

A large body of research shows that Millennials are significantly less religious than previous generations of young Americans. But as to whether the lack of religion seen in today’s Gen Y’ers (born between 1980 and the mid-1990’s) is transient or lasting, scientists aren’t sure.

But now a new review of surveys of more than 11 million adolescents, conducted over the course of almost 50 years, suggests that the religion divide between Millennials and their predecessors is a true generational one. According to the data, Millenials are much less interested in organized religion — and also less interested in spirituality in general.

“Unlike previous studies, ours is able to show that Millennials’ lower religious involvement is due to cultural change, not to Millennials being young and unsettled,” Dr. Jean Twenge, a psychologist at San Diego State University and of the researchers, said in a written statement.

Twenge is referring to studies like a 2010 Pew survey — which suggested that people may consider religion to be more important as they get older — and a 2014 survey that suggested Millennials do have a strong sense of faith in God, despite identifying less with organized religion.

Religion’s decline. For the new study, the researchers reviewed four surveys conducted between 1966 to 2014 and involving 11.2 million American adolescents between the ages of 13 to 18. They found that Millennials were less likely to attend services, less likely to say religion was important in their lives, and less approving of religious organizations than Boomers and Gen X’ers were at the same age.

Millennials “were also less likely to describe themselves as spiritual, suggesting that religion has not been replaced by spirituality,” Twenge told The Huffington Post in an email.

The decline in religiosity was found to be greater among young women than young men. The decline was also found to be greater among Whites than Blacks, and among Northeasterners than Southerners.

A cultural shift. What explains the religious declines? Twenge believes the changes may reflect a growing emphasis on individualism in U.S. culture.

“We found that religious involvement was low when individualism was high,” she said in the email. “Individualism is a cultural system that places more emphasis on the self and less on social rules. Individualism can conflict with religion, especially as religion usually involves following certain rules and being part of a group.”

As for whether the decline is a good thing or a bad thing, she said “I’d rather leave it up to others to decide.”

Whatever the reason, there’s no doubt “this is a time of dramatic change in the religious landscape of the United States,” as the researchers wrote in a paper describing the research, which was published online on May 11 in the journal PLOS ONE.

Ripping His Pants Was The Least Of This Groomsman’s Worries

When posing for wedding photos, there are a few simple rules to keep in mind. For starters, don’t accidentally kick another member of the wedding party in the head.

Groomsman Tyler Foster recently violated that rule at his cousin’s wedding in Jamaica. During one of those fun jumping shots, Foster accidentally karate-kicked a bridesmaid in the head and ripped his pants in the process. This was the result:

Foster posted the picture to Reddit late last week, where it went viral.

In a recent interview on Good Morning America, Foster assured the world the bridesmaid was not injured.

“She was laughing, I guess, after she picked herself up, but she wasn’t hurt really,” he said.

Maybe less air next time.

For the Least of the Brethren

For the Least of the Brethren

This is the story of St Michael’s Hospital, founded by the Sisters of St Joseph in 1892 to meet the needs of Toronto’s sick poor. Sustained by the Gospel’s assurance ‘What you have done for the least of My brethren you have done for Me’, a plucky little group of fewer than twenty people – sisters, doctors, and nurses – located in an old Baptist church, laid the foundations for what would grow into a major urban university teaching hospital. The book traces the development to 1992 of the first hospital in Toronto under Roman Catholic auspices, and the first Catholic school of nursing in Canada. Within the context of a not-always-friendly political, social, economic, and religious culture, the author has identified the forces – the people, events, struggles, triumphs, and failures – that have shaped St Michael’s into what it is today.
