The True Legacy of Stan Lee at Marvel Comics

The pop culture world was dealt a huge blow today with the news that Stan Lee passed away at the age of 95. Lee is widely celebrated as one of the primary architects of the Marvel Universe. He co-created many of the company’s most famous heroes and villains and managed to become the public face of Marvel for decades. But ultimately, Lee’s true legacy at Marvel Comics isn’t any one character or franchise, but the deep inspiration he provided for generations of creators that followed.

Lee’s resume includes a laundry list of iconic superhero characters – Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers and on and on. That said, Lee isn’t singlehandedly responsible for creating any of the characters he’s so closely associated with. Spider-Man was a joint creation with Steve Ditko. Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men were all developed alongside Jack Kirby. But that’s the beauty of comics – it’s generally a collaborative medium. If you didn’t have Kirby’s boundless imagination and superhuman work ethic paired with Lee’s sense of humor, grandiose storytelling style and marketing skills, none of these characters would be what they are today. It’s safe to say many of them might never have left the drawing board in the first place.

Christopher Bailey Reflects on Legacy – and Life After Burberry

Winding down his 17-year tenure at Burberry with a colorful collection that had a streetwise edge, Christopher Bailey was in a “chipper” yet reflective mood before his show.
In a wide-ranging chat, he spoke about his achievements, a few regrets, his future in fashion, and his role in Burberry’s creative transition:
WWD: How did it feel to design your last collection?
Christopher Bailey: It felt poignant. I had a lot of reflection, but I’m so serene with the decision and it just feels right. I feel extraordinarily privileged that I’ve been able to be somewhere that I have loved so deeply for 17 years. I just feel very calm and chipper about it.

What to Expect from Pandemic Legacy: Season 2

Pandemic is one of the most acclaimed board games of all time. Released in 2008, it casts players as a team of medics fighting deadly diseases around the globe, and its combination of cooperative gameplay and steadily mounting tension made massive hit with fans and critics.

Over the years it has spawned an ever-expanding line of spin-offs, with one recent entry standing out above the rest: 2015’s Pandemic Legacy: Season 1. Legacy takes the original game’s blueprint and adds a story-driven campaign mode where your successes and failures permanently alter the game. Cities are lost, scrubbed from the game board. Cards are torn up.  Co-created by design partners Matt Leacock and Rob Daviau, its twisting episodic plot sees characters suffer trauma and death. Many players have called it the greatest board game ever made.

How JFK’s Only Grandson Stepped into the Spotlight This Week — and Honored His Family’s Legacy

He’s named after one of the most mythic figures in American politics, but John “Jack” Kennedy Schlossberg has kept a relatively low profile over the years. But all that changed this week when he made headlines with his first red carpet at the 2017 Met Ball and first live TV appearance on NBC’s Today.

Growing up in New York City’s Upper East Side, the 24-year-old youngest child of Caroline Kennedy and Ed Schlossberg (and only grandson of JFK and Jackie Kennedy) was largely left alone by the photographers that followed his uncle John F. Kennedy Jr. from the day he was born — allowing Jack to grow up primarily outside of the public eye.

A 2015 graduate of Yale with a major in history and a concentration in Japanese history, Jack spent this past year living in Japan while his mother was serving as the U.S. ambassador. There, Jack studied the Japanese language and worked at the Suntory distillery company, where he assisted the CEO’s office with research and speechwriting.

Next year, he’ll head to Harvard Law, where his cousin — Representative Joseph P. Kennedy III — is listed among the institution’s most famous alumni. (His grandfather completed his undergraduate degree at the prestigious Ivy League school.)

Friends say Schlossberg is low-key, funny and “very much his own person” — though he’s apparently a lot like his uncle John F. Kennedy Jr., who died tragically in 1999. The two also share a remarkable family resemblance — down to that thick, sometimes wild brown hair.

“Jack is very much interested in John ,” a friend previously told PEOPLE. “He has an ease and a sense of humor. And he loves being compared to him. John was a rare kind of celebrity who grew up with being famous and had fun with it and didn’t let it take over his life.”

Added a college friend to PEOPLE in 2015: “He’s not walking around with a big sign over his head. He’s not spending a lot of time thinking about his family’s legacy. It’s something he’s proud of, but it doesn’t define him.”

Schlossberg may not be spending a lot of time thinking about his family’s legacy, but that doesn’t mean he’s not living up to it.

Sisters Rose and Tatiana have found their own paths — Rose, 28, launching a comedy web series offering women tips for surviving an apocalypse, while Tatiana, 26, reports for The New York Times. Jack has emerged as the sibling most vocal about politics, writing an essay for TIME about the Syrian refugee crisis, speaking out about climate change, and publicly supporting democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

He’s also served on the committee that chooses the recipient of the annual John F. Kennedy New Frontier Awards and the annual John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Awards — the latter of which is an honor that has been given since 1989 to someone who shows an act of political courage.

Here, a recap of Jack’s fabulous week in the spotlight so far (and what’s still to come this weekend).

MONDAY: THE MET GALA

Caroline’s return to the Met Gala red carpet — and her “sphere like” oversized floral Comme Des Garcons dress — might have made made news on Monday night, but it was Jack’s red carpet debut that had many people talking.

Dressed in a simple suit and camo-patterned tie, Jack proved to be the perfect companion for his mother, who was also chairing the event. He posed with her for photographers, towering over her with his tall, slender frame.

FRIDAY: THE TODAY SHOW

On Friday, Jack and Caroline made a visit to the Today show — Jack’s first live TV interview.

It didn’t take long for Today anchors Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie to grill him about whether he’d pursue a full-time career in politics.

“I’m inspired by my family’s legacy of public service. It’s something that I’m very proud of,” Jack said. “But I’m still trying to make my own way and figure things out. So stay tuned — I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

RELATED VIDEO: JFK’s Only Grandson Makes First Live TV Appearance

Elsewhere in the chat, Jack looked back on his grandfather’s words — which he says still motivate him today.

“My favorite speech of his is his speech he gave at Rice University explaining to America we should go to the moon,” Jack confessed. “And in that speech he said that great challenges are actually great opportunities. I think that’s a really important thing to remember today for my generation when it seems like things couldn’t be any worse and we’re going to inherit a world where’s there’s a lot of unsolved problems.”

“When it seems like things couldn’t be any worse, it’s important to remember those are opportunities and we can rise to the occasion if we choose good leadership,” he said.

UPCOMING: THE PROFILE IN COURAGE AWARDS

On Sunday, Jack will host the annual John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Awards — live from the JFK Library in Boston. This year, the prize goes to former President Barack Obama, who will receive it as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s birth.

Coverage of the ceremony will be seen on MSNBC’s Hardball at 8 p.m. ET.

“Faced with unrelenting political opposition, President Obama has embodied the definition of courage that my grandfather cites in the opening lines of Profiles in Courage: ‘Grace under pressure,’ ” Jack said in a statement.

“Throughout his two terms in office, he represented all Americans with decency, integrity, and an unshakeable commitment to the greater good,” he continued. “On key issues during his presidency, President Obama put policy above politics — expanding health security for millions of Americans, restoring diplomatic relations with Cuba, and leading a landmark international accord to combat climate change.”

He added: “Our country owes a debt of gratitude to President Obama, not just for the many important policy achievements made during his tenure, but also for the example of leadership he provided all of us, which we may draw upon in the years to come.”

Alexis Arquette’s Sister Patricia Celebrates the Transgender Pioneer’s Legacy 6 Months After Death: ‘I Wouldn’t Change a Thing’

Alexis Arquette was undoubtedly one of the first transgender activists in Hollywood.

Coming from a family of actors, Alexis was accepted when she came out. Her sister Patricia was concerned about the impact her sister’s revelation would have on her career — though Alexis was not.

“Alexis was really also very powerful, and strong, and really brave, very brave,” Patricia told PEOPLE while at the Let’s Toast the Extraordinary Achievements of Alexis Arquette pre-GLAAD Media Awards dinner sponsored by Ketel One in Hollywood.

“We had a long conversation when Alexis told me that she was transgender, and I said, ‘Okay. So what do you do about Hollywood? How will you get work? People are not progressive in Hollywood and it could really negatively impact your career. Are you thinking everything through?’ ” the Academy Award Winner recalled.

Patricia affirms that despite the obvious risks, Alexis was confident in her decision to come out in Hollywood.

“Alexis was very brave to make that decision,” her sister continued. “She really wanted to help progress the world and move the world forward.”

Alexis died last September at age 47, but childhood memories of Alexis are still vivid for Patricia.

“Alexis and David both had these beds that sort of look like space pods. They were like these tubes that you could get in,” the 48-year-old recalled. “My mom was making Alexis’ bed and realized that a big chunk of the mattress was missing out of the corner. She said, ‘Alexis what happened to your mattress?’ Alexis said, ‘I need the foam to make a puppet.’ So she pulled out this puppet with this little sparkly dress on it and my mom said, ‘Oh, my god, it’s gorgeous. My kids are so creative.’ “

Patricia was joined at the event by brothers David and Richmond along with her boyfriend Eric White. Not only were they there to remember their sister, but also to honor the many lives that she touched.

“We’ve gotten so many letters. I’ve had letters from people all over the world who said their first experience of a trans person was with Alexis,” Patricia shared in awe of her late sister.  “Watching Alexis in Last Exit to Brooklyn — which was Alexis’ first movie — she played a trans person in the 1950s which was considered really a crossdresser at that time. That’s what people called trans people then.”

Patricia also noted ,”Alexis was incredibly creative our whole lives. I grew up with Alexis putting on makeup, trying on high heels …. Alexis was my best friend when we grew up, so I wouldn’t change one thing about Alexis.”

Tilikum’s Legacy: How the Late SeaWorld Orca Changed the Park and Whale Captivity Forever

On Friday morning, Tilikum the orca whale died at the SeaWorld park in Orlando, Florida.

Long before his passing, the 36-year-old killer whale made headlines for his part in the controversial documentary Blackfish, in which his behavior was profiled — and for killing SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010.

These events encouraged a new era at SeaWorld, where the interest shifted from breeding whales and making them perform to focusing on the animals’ natural behavior, and also bolstered the movement to end whale captivity.

In a timeline of his brief life, it is easy to see the challenging world Tilikum lived in, and how his struggle has forever changed SeaWorld and how we view captive whales.

1983: Tilikum the 2-year-old bull orca is captured from the wild in the waters near Reykjavík, Iceland, and is taken to a tank at a local zoo.

1984: After a year in Iceland, Tilikum moves to Sealand of the Pacific in South Oak Bay, British Columbia, Canada.

Here, Tilikum is put into a tank with two other older and larger female orcas, Haida II and Nootka IV, leaving the male newcomer at the bottom of the social hierarchy. Because of his standing with the group, Tilikum endures continued bullying from both of the female whales, who often forcibly herd him into a smaller medical tank.

Feb. 20, 1991: Keltie Byrne, a 21-year-old marine biology student working as a part-time trainer at Sealand, slips into the pool containing Tilikum, Haida II and Nootka IV. All three whales submerge Byrne, a competitive swimmer, in the water and prevent her from surfacing. For minutes, the whales drag her around the pool and prevent her from reaching the sides or receiving help from fellow trainers. Eventually, Byrne drowns in front of guests. Several hours pass before the park can safely remove the woman’s body from the whales’ pool.

Jan. 9, 1992: Harassed by his pool mates for years and partially responsible for the death of one person, Tilikum is transferred to SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida, to continue training and performances. Sealand of the Pacific closes shortly after Tilikum’s departure.

During his time at SeaWorld Orlando, sperm removed from Tilikum by trainers is used to sire 21 orca calfs, 11 of which preceded their father in death.

July 6, 1999: On this morning a dead man, 27-year-old Daniel P. Dukes, is found naked and slumped over Tilikum’s back. SeaWorld discovers later that Dukes had visited the park the previous day, hid until it closed and then snuck into Tilikum’s tank. An autopsy determined Dukes’ cause of death was drowning by Tilikum.

Feb. 24, 2010: Tilikum becomes responsible for his third death — making him responsible for three of only four recorded deaths by orca attacks on humans. After performing a ‘Dine with Shamu’ show with veteran trainer Dawn Brancheau, Tilikum grabs the trainer and drags her into the water, drowning her in front of guests. Tilikum is removed from performances after this incident, but remains on display at the park.

March 30, 2011: SeaWorld decides to use Tilikum in performances again, adding a few security measures to prevent further trainer injuries.

December 2011: Tilikum is removed from performances due to illness.

April 2012: SeaWorld starts using Tilikum in performances once more.

January 2013: The documentary Blackfish premieres, profiling Tilikum’s experience in captivity, arguing these unnatural conditions (tiny cages, close quarters to other whales, performance training) caused the whale mental and physical anguish, which contributed to the deaths he was involved in.

August 2014: SeaWorld starts building new, larger killer whale tanks, but states that the choice is not a response to Blackfish. Animal advocates openly argue that the changes are not enough to satisfy the intelligent creatures, who swim dozens of miles a day in the wild, and that all of SeaWorld’s orcas should stop being used for breeding and get to live out the rest of their lives in sea sanctuaries.

October 2015: Tank expansion plans in San Diego halt after California Coastal Commission rules that construction can only continue if the parks end their captive breeding program.

November 2015: Plans to phase out killer whale shows are announced. SeaWorld states that killer whale performances will cease at the San Diego park in 2017 and at other locations in 2019.

March 2016: SeaWorld reveals that Tilikum has a bacterial infection in his lungs that is resistant to treatment and is greatly affecting his overall health.

March 17, 2016: SeaWorld announces its plans to end its captive breeding program, which means the current orcas living in the parks will be the last killer whales in captivity at SeaWorld, unless a whale comes in as a rescue.

May 2016: The parts of the orca performances that include kissing, dancing or posing cease at SeaWorld.

Jan. 6, 2017: Tilikum dies at SeaWorld Orlando.

The Legacy of Debbie Reynolds

Artistic gifts aside, Debbie Reynolds made it her mission to help preserve Hollywood history by collecting iconic costumes.
The multitasking actress died Wednesday at the age of 84 in Los Angeles.
Deborah Nadoolman Landis, director of The David C. Copley Center for Costume Design at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, said she suffered from whiplash while reading the tags walking down the aisles of Reynolds’ San Luis Obispo storage facility. “Anyone would,” she wrote in an e-mail, singling out Cecil Beaton’s “Ascot Dress” for Audrey Hepburn in “My Fair Lady” and Irene Sharaff’s gold gown for Barbra Streisand in “Hello Dolly” as examples.
Further building her case, Landis noted designs worn by Greta Garbo in “Anna Karenina,” Norma Shearer in the 1937 film version of “Marie Antoinette,” Joan Crawford in “Mildred Pierce,” Donna Reed in “It’s A Wonderful Life,” Gene Kelly in “Singing’ in the Rain,” and Marilyn Monroe in “Bus Stop” and “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.”
Landis referred to how Reynolds once sat on her sofa and cried after her dreams of a costume center had been crushed by a series of setbacks. “To her lifelong frustration and disappointment she received little respect from our industry (and Los Angeles) for this valiant

Public Financing And Delivery Of Hiv/aids Care: Securing The Legacy Of Ryan White

Public Financing And Delivery Of Hiv/aids Care: Securing The Legacy Of Ryan White

Each year it is estimated that approximately 40,000 people in the U.S. are newly infected with HIV. In the late 1990s, the number of deaths from AIDS dropped 43% as a result of highly active antiretroviral therapy. Unfortunately, the complex system currently in place for financing and delivering publicly financed HIV care undermines the significant advances that have been made in the development of new technologies to treat it. Many HIV patients experience delays in access to other services that would support adhering to treatment. As a result, each year opportunities are missed that could reduce the mortality, morbidity, and disability suffered by individuals with HIV infections. Public Financing and Delivery of HIV/AIDS Care examines the current standard of care for HIV patients and assesses the extent the system currently used for financing and delivering care allows individuals with HIV to actually receive it. The book recommends an expanded federal program for the treatment of individuals with HIV, administered at the state level. This program would provide timely access and consistent benefits with a strong focus on comprehensive and continuous care and access to antiretroviral therapy. It could help improve the quality of life of HIV/AIDS patients, as well as reduce the number of deaths among those infected.

Apollo Theater Celebrates Its Rich Legacy With 10th Annual Spring Gala

Monday night marked the 10th anniversary of the Apollo Theater’s annual Spring Gala, which was met with much fanfare.

The event, which featured a celebratory benefit concert, was hosted by Extra TV correspondent AJ Calloway and featured star-studded performances from Nile Rodgers and his pioneering disco-funk group Chic, Ne-Yo, Luke James, Rosanne Cash, “The Voice” season 8 contestant Kimberly Nichole and South African a capella trio The Soil.

During his opening monologue, Calloway shared some of his personal experiences and memories of the Apollo.

“I used to sneak into the Apollo when I was in high school,” Calloway said. “I was in [New] Jersey, my parents didn’t know I was here, but I used to watch Amateur Night so I’m very happy to be on this stage. And I started my career here. The first time I was on this stage was ‘106 & Park’ and that was 15 years ago. So I’m really, really happy to be here.”

In addition to Calloway’s return to the Apollo stage, the event also served as a homecoming for Rodgers, who landed his second professional gig performing with the theater’s house band. Prior to taking to the stage to perform a medley of Chic’s biggest hits, Rodgers opened up to The Huffington Post about the significance of headlining this year’s annual gala.

“When I played here I was 19-years-old,” Rodgers said. “I had just finished a year with ‘Sesame Street,’ which was my first professional job. And I was just telling the band how it was the first time I walked out onto this stage. It’s amazing for me to be here now, all these years later playing my own music, which is crazy.”

For Apollo Theater President & CEO, Jonelle Procope the Gala has served as an important part in the theater’s growth for the past 10 years.

“Although the Apollo is now in its 81st year, we have only been a nonprofit since 1991 and I would say it has really been over the last 10 years that the institution has experienced tremendous growth as a nonprofit with expanded artistic, educational and community programs,” Procope said to the Huffington Post.

“The Gala, which is one of our largest fundraisers, has provided crucial support toward those initiatives. It also allows us to celebrate and honor the Apollo’s rich legacy as the musical home for so many legendary artists like Nile Rodgers and the opportunity to continue that legacy as an important springboard for the next generation of artists.”

The benefit, which raises funds for the theater’s education and community outreach programs, also honored James Dolan, President and CEO of Cablevision Systems Corporation and Executive Chairman of Madison Square Garden, who accepted the Corporate Award on behalf of The Madison Square Garden Company, and Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, who accepted the Percy C. Sutton Civic Leadership Award on behalf of The Ford Foundation.

Check out a collection of Apollo Gala performers through the years in the slideshow below.

Motown Gratitude A Legacy Of Love

25 thumbs up!!!!!

After being raised in the suburbs of Detroit and growing up on oldies but goodies, it made complete sense for the coolest manager in the world to ask me to go see Motown the Musical at the Pantages Theatre. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a must! I loved it so much, that I went the following week with my music partner. In addition, I gifted tickets to dear colleagues in my life! You will laugh, cry, and dance all in one throughout the show! I love musicals, and I’ve been to a hand full of shows but I must say that Motown is truly its own magical gem.

Maybe it’s because I’m from the D and that I grew up on oldies because of my mother. Thank you mom! Wow, I always gave credit to my musical ears from growing up attending underground rave parties and listening to the classics like Mozart, Chopin, Janis Joplin, Sade and Sinatra. After watching/hearing the show, I know for a fact something came full circle for me and I pay deep gratitude towards my mother for influencing me and gifting me the sound of oldies!

It was all there right in front of my face: The Supremes, The Temptations, and all the songs I used to listen to while growing up My Girl, My Guy (lol) and the remarkable inside scoop on their legendary stories…so clever, so sensational. Let’s talk about the best pipes and harmonies you will ever hear! It’s mind-blowing with an all-star cast. The decibels in my ears have been taken to a whole new level! So healing, so enriching.

Winner winner to the costume designer who put the gents in classic suits and the ladies in flawless body shaped dresses. OMG and it does not stop there!
Not only is it a laugh/cry of a great time but it’s so educational too. They touch on Stevie Wonder, his story, The Jackson Five, JFK, and Dr. Martin Luther King Junior to name a few.
Thank goodness for Barry Gordy and his creative but business like vision. BG certainly revolutionized the way we integrate with music and all humans.
I am so enthralled that I might just need to slip in one more time before the show closes in LA, but not to worry, I checked the schedule and it’s touring for the next year, so you will have moments to catch it! Also, if you want to send someone an amazing gift in another state, send him or her to see Motown The Musical. You and they will be so happy that you did! It’s a historical story you do not want to miss!

Get ready to be in spirit and inspired~

Grateful for My Mom’s Legacy this Mother’s Day

As both a mom and a daughter whose mother has passed away, Mother’s Day is always a bittersweet time for me. While I enjoy being celebrated by my son and husband, I miss my mother dearly. Each day of my life her legacy and influence live on through my parenting, family traditions, cooking, education and style. So many of our viewers reach out to me asking about the necklaces I wear on my show. What they might not know is that my mother is the inspiration behind the statement necklaces I wear each day.

I have to wear a robe, but I still like to be a jazzy judge! I inherited my love of jewelry and interesting statement necklaces from my mom. My late mother was very stylish in an understated, classy way, but she loved wearing beautiful, interesting neckpieces. A bold necklace is a great way to create a stylish focal point for any kind of outfit.

I carry on my mother’s flair for fashion by wearing some of her pieces and designing almost all of the others. And, almost every piece I have worn on the show is a one-of-a-kind creation. For me, the necklaces hold a special meaning and are more than just a fashionable piece of jewelry. My necklaces not only remind me of my mother, they are a symbol and reflection of the colorful, bold, unique woman she raised me to be. All of the words of encouragement and affirmation concerning my necklaces has inspired me to create a line of necklaces and other statement pieces.

I hope you enjoy your Mother’s Day! I’d love to hear how you celebrate your mom or keep her legacy alive limitlessly.

The Musical Legacy of Wartime France

The Musical Legacy of Wartime France

For the three forces competing for political authority in France during World War II, music became the site of a cultural battle that reflected the war itself. German occupying authorities promoted German music at the expense of French, while the Vichy administration pursued projects of national renewal through culture. Meanwhile, Resistance networks gradually formed to combat German propaganda while eyeing Vichy’s efforts with suspicion. In The Musical Legacy of Wartime France, Leslie A. Sprout explores how each of these forces influenced the composition, performance, and reception of five well-known works: the secret Resistance songs of Francis Poulenc and those of Arthur Honegger; Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, composed in a German prisoner of war camp; Maurice Durufle’s Requiem, one of sixty-five pieces commissioned by Vichy between 1940 and 1944; and Igor Stravinsky’s Danses concertantes, which was met at its 1945 Paris premiere with protests that prefigured the aesthetic debates of the early Cold War. Sprout examines not only how these pieces were created and disseminated during and just after the war, but also how and why we still associate these pieces with the stories we tell – in textbooks, program notes, liner notes, historical monographs, and biographies – about music, France, and World War II.

A Legacy of Faith

A Legacy of Faith

‘A Legacy of Faith’ is a compiled writing of the last few years of Linda’s life. There is a blend in this book of her journal entries during the time of ALS, Debbie’s observations, and a caregiver’s description involved in her daily care along with others who offered support to Linda while learning to cope with ALS. Linda’s trust in God and her belief in reward in Heaven is the one thing that made any real sense to her. Bible verses continually came to mind which gave comfort. Debbie chronicled Linda’s decline in health, with compassion, trying to depict her with her sense of humor despite grave obstacles. Linda’s faith was expressed in her words, ‘I don’t look into mirrors very often these days but when I do, the reflections has changed. There is, however, one thing that remains the same, my eyes. When I look in the mirror, I see the same eyes I saw when I was a terrified little girl looking in the mirror. I see the eternal me and there is no fear, there is total peace. I know who I am, I know where I will spend eternity and so can you.’ ‘A Legacy of Faith’ is a graphic description of the ravages of ALS and recounts the life changes that affected Linda’s entire family. Yet, despite her death, the story strikes a positive chord which the reader will not soon forget.
