Selfridges Opens Eyewear Pop-up With Lily Cole’s Brand, Wires

THROWING SHADE: Selfridges is teaming with model and social entrepreneur Lily Cole to unveil a new collection from Wires, an eyewear brand cofounded by Cole and Yair Neuman.
The pop-up will run until July 15 in Selfridges’ personalization area on the lower ground floor.
For the second collection, Neuman took a modular approach to the design: An invisible hinge was added on the wire frame to allow the wearer to collapse and store the sunglasses with ease.
The sunglasses are created to be completely customizable, with lenses that can be switched and interchanged. “It’s a nice way to marry off a desire for newness and new designs and allow people to experiment and play — but to do so in a way that is less demanding on the material,” Cole said.
The wire frames — handmade by a family-run business in Italy — retail between 140 pounds and 270 pounds and the interchangeable rims retail at 50 pounds.
To mark the opening of the pop-up, Cole and Neuman have created a special-edition pair of glasses inspired by Selfridges’ heritage, priced at 220 pounds.
Sustainability was also a driving force behind the design. “We minimize waste in the production process because we 3-D print the rim instead

Kim Jones’ Crew, Including Kate Moss and Lily Allen, Pack in to Dior Homme Show

IN FASHION: Paris rarely gets to see so many designers in one place. Karl Lagerfeld, Virgil Abloh, Victoria Beckham, Giles Deacon, Haider Ackermann, Kenzo Takada and Chitose Abe were just some of the talents who attended Kim Jones’ debut show for Dior Homme on Saturday at the Garde Républicaine. Guests were greeted by a towering floral statue of KAWS’ BFF character reimagined as Christian Dior and his pooch, and covered in some 70,000 blooms.
Sweeping in on the arm of Lenny Kravitz, Naomi Campbell said she was feeling “very proud, very happy.”
“Kim is the one that embraces all the young designers and brings them into the fold and I think that’s really rare. He’s a special human being,” she said, breaking off to catch up with Kate Moss front row.
Kelly Osbourne said Jones had given her a preview of the set two days prior to the show. “To be here today, it’s a dream come true for him but also for all of his close friends. We’re all so proud, we all think we’re going to have a Virgil [Abloh]-Kanye [West] moment day today — with all of us; it might be the entire front row,” said Osbourne, who is currently

Lily Allen Covers Rufus Wainwright’s ‘Going To A Town’ At Women’s March

As the world grapples with a new U.S. president bent on stripping away American freedoms, we’re at least getting some damn good protests songs out of it.

On Tuesday, musician Lily Allen released a haunting cover of Rufus Wainwright’s already somber song, “Going To A Town.” The song, first released in 2007, seems more lyrically relevant than ever.

“I’m going to a town that has already been burnt down / I’m going to a place that has already been disgraced,” Allen croons in a video that shows the singer performing at the Women’s March in London. “I’m gonna see some folks who have already been let down / I’m so tired of America.”

Last weekend’s march drew millions of people from all over the world in protest of Trump’s xenophobiaracism, misogyny and proposed policies.

Artists across the musical spectrum have made their opposition to Trump clear. After a six-year hiatus, the Gorillaz introduced an anti-Trump song last week called “Halleujah Money.” And Father John Misty’s new song, “Pure Comedy,” mourns the state of the world in a video that prominently features Trump.

How Dolly Parton’s Nails Helped Lily Tomlin Predict Their Comedy 9 to 5 Would Be a Success

Lily Tomlin can still remember the moment she knew her comedy 9 to 5 with Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton would be a success.

“I remember Dolly came out on set and played the 9 to 5 song for us on her fingernails. I just thought this movie is going to make it because that song will make it,” Tomlin tells PEOPLE.

The 1980 hit comedy followed three working women living out their fantasies of getting even with their sexist boss.

Tomlin, who currently stars opposite Fonda in her Emmy-nominated role on the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, often keeps in touch with her 9 to 5 costars and says the friendship they formed while making the film is one of her fondest memories.

The three women will be reunited at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 29, where Fonda and Parton will present Tomlin with the 53rd SAG Life Achievement Award.

For more on Tomlin, check out this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.

“These two girls are still buddies,” Tomlin tells PEOPLE. “Dolly is whatever you see is what you get. She is a darling person, fun and lively. Jane is so innocent and sweet and kind. I just laugh when I am around her.”

Tomlin says it was Fonda who brought the three of them together in 9 to 5 and adds that she changed the tone of film after she saw Tomlin perform at the Ahmanson theater in Los Angeles one night.

“It was going to be a serious movie, but when she saw me she said, ‘It’s got to be a comedy and I have to have Lily in it.’ On the way home, she heard Dolly’s song on the radio and the rest is history.”

The 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Grace Elizabeth, Lily Aldridge Pose in Carolina Herrera Spring Campaign

ARTFUL YOUTH: For her company’s spring global advertising campaign with photographer Mario Testino, Carolina Herrera was inspired by the French neoclassical painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and she recruited up-and-coming model Grace Elizabeth to help relay his artistry.
Setting out to examine the juxtaposition between the muse and the protagonist, the images are meant to blur the lines between the main characters and supporting role. Most widely recognized for his portraits, Ingres worked in Paris, Rome and Florence, specializing in paintings that used delicate yet precise contouring and impeccably capturing his subjects expressions. The artist also favored bold colors for added ambience.
In her campaign debut for Herrera, the 19-year-old Elizabeth joined Lily Aldridge. In individual photos, each model looks relaxed in evening gowns and flat shoes, leaning against a naked man — an apparent reference to the male torsos that Ingres pictured in his own work. Not too long ago, Testino photographed another unclothed posterior — Kendall Jenner’s for a V magazine cover. Equally risque are some of the photos in his new limited-edition book “Sir” that Taschen has published. But Testino’s images for Herrera are meant to highlight the designer’s stand-alone mission, “to design clothes that make women feel and look beautiful.”

Lily Tomlin May Be A ‘Grandma,’ But This Is Her Year

It’s been 39 years since Lily Tomlin’s first Oscar nomination and 44 years since her first Emmy nod. But if headlining a film is what makes someone a movie star, then Tomlin is only now earning her due. And if top billing on a series makes someone a television star, then Tomlin didn’t accomplish that either, until just a few months ago. Now she has a lot to show for it: Her film, “Grandma,” which opened this weekend, has attracted glowing reviews and Oscar buzz since it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and the first season of her Netflix series, “Grace and Frankie,” led to Tomlin’s umpteenth Emmy salute

“I’ve never thought of myself as a movie star,” Tomlin said when I sat down with her at a Manhattan hotel during the Tribeca Film Festival, where “Grandma” screened in April. “I’m considered a little eccentric in a way.”

It’s not hard to pinpoint the origins of Tomlin’s self-assessment: Her breakout stint on “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” in the early 1970s included such characters as fast-talking, nasally 5-year-old Edith Ann and the condescending telephone operator Ernestine. She smoked pot with Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton in the 1980 feminist comedy “9 to 5” and became a fixture of Robert Altman’s sprawling ensemble films about the idiosyncrasies of the American experience (“Nashville,” “Short Cuts,” “A Prairie Home Companion”). “Grandma” fits in nicely with that catalog. Tomlin portrays a crusty, weed-smoking lesbian poet who assists her teenage granddaughter in cobbling together $ 600 for an abortion. And in “Grace and Frankie,” she plays a breezy, weed-smoking painter whose longtime husband leaves her for another man.

These eccentricities don’t always extend to Tomlin’s real life, however, as much as her reputation may assume otherwise. She and Fonda, who portray “Grace and Frankie’s” title characters, did take peyote to prepare for a pilot’s hallucinogenic scene, but Tomlin has repeated time and again throughout the “Grandma” press cycle that she rarely smokes pot and certainly doesn’t consume heavier drugs with any regularity. (“I’m too wacky and nutty and foggy anyway,” she told The Daily Beast. “I don’t need to get too blissed out.”)

What does factor into Tomlin’s real life is the excellence of her “Grandma” performance, which the actress said is the closest she’s come to playing herself onscreen.

“I don’t know why I didn’t think of this a long time ago,” she said of portraying a semi-analogue. “I identified with many things in the script: the fact that she was a lesbian. I’m not a poet, but I kind of wish I was.”

I told Tomlin that comedy could be considered a form of poetry. She beamed.

“Well, that’s true,” she responded. “Thank you! Bless you. You sound like Diane Keaton. She said, ‘Comedy deserves something good,’ and then she got an Oscar for ‘Annie Hall.'”

Part of the reason “Grandma” hit home may be that Paul Weitz, who directed her in the 2013 Tina Fey-Paul Rudd comedy “Admission,” wrote the script with Tomlin in mind. (The same goes for “Grace and Frankie,” which “Friends” scribe Marta Kauffman co-created for Fonda and Tomlin.) She’s shared the screen with the likes of Bette Midler (“Big Business”) and Steve Martin (“All of Me”), but this is the first movie in which Tomlin is the one true lead. At 75, that sounds like a feat, especially when she reveals that “not very many” scripts drift her way anymore.

“It’s an age thing for me right now,” she said when I asked why more casting directors aren’t ringing her up. “What’s going to come across your desk is not going to be a lead role, and you’re not going to be a romantic interest in a conventional movie. I didn’t get a romantic lead when I was 30, though. I was thought of as a comedian.”

She doesn’t see herself as the lead of “Grandma” either, though. Tomlin was “over the moon” when she learned that Julia Garner had been cast as her granddaughter, Marcia Gay Harden as her stuffy daughter, Judy Greer as a doting ex-girlfriend and Laverne Cox as a tattoo-artist pal. Oh, and she got to clobber “Paper Towns” star Nat Wolff with a hockey stick in one scene, too.

But “Grandma” is Tomlin’s movie. Perhaps she’s taking a modesty cue from her own mother. I asked whether the film’s family dynamics resonate, and Tomlin launched into an account about sometimes needing to act as a parental figure while growing up. Like that time she called a door-to-door salesman who’d duped her mother, too intimidated to tell him no, into purchasing 10 vacuum cleaners at about $ 300 a pop. She ordered him to come to their home and refund her mother’s money.

“I was all piss and vinegar,” she recalled. “I was just cursing him and telling him that if he didn’t come I would throw it in the street. He finally came out and said, ‘Your mother bought that vacuum cleaner’ and all this stuff. And I pitched it out off the stairs. I was forever doing stuff like that. I just railed against it. In the early years, my mother would have been more concerned about what the neighbors — or the relatives in the South — would think. I was a Detroit kid, a street kid, so I was kind of tough. I would stand up for myself.”

That resolve worked in Tomlin’s favor over the years, including the many times she’s said she has no regrets about turning down an offer to reveal her sexuality on the cover of Time magazine in 1975. The same forces that prevented her from accepting the deal — potential career suicide at the time — would have stymied a pro-choice, pro-weed, pro-sexuality, pro-aging movie like “Grandma” from being made even a decade ago.

“I just feel like so much progress has been made on those fronts, although a lot has been a pull-back, too, in certain regions,” she said. “And I know that because my family is Southern. My generation has come around tremendously. My mom’s generation, they’d just be negative, negative, negative: ‘Did you hear about that Mary Jean?’ That’s my real name. My mother would be 100 years old by now, and even though my mother came to terms with my brother and me both being gay, my relatives would have been gossiping about us for days. But my younger relatives are much more lenient, much more tolerant, much more accepting. Their minds are just open to things. And yet I can’t even talk about this in a way because so much other stuff is so horrible in the world — the inequities and the prejudice and the hate and the killing.”

She’s right, of course, but “Grandma” is a phenomenal signpost of the incremental progress this country has seen in recent years. It’s also one of the year’s best indies to date — a yarn about old connections resurfacing and disparate generations merging their value systems. In an ideal world, Tomlin would add an Oscar nomination to her list of 2015 successes.

After our 20-minute chat, the publicist said it was time to part. I instantly protested, not wanting to end a great conversation. Tomlin stood and threw her arms around me for a hug. She would never admit it, but somewhere, she must know, 44 years after her first Emmy nomination, that this is her moment.

”Grandma” is now in limited release.

How Supermodel Lily Aldridge Discovered Her Mom Was A Playboy Playmate (VIDEO)

Supermodel Lily Aldridge isn’t the only famous face in her family. Her mother Laura was a Playboy Playmate in the 1970s, as Aldridge found out when rooting around her father’s studio as a child.

“I found out because my dad’s an artist,” she told HuffPost Live’s Josh Zepps on Monday. “So I was in his studio rifling around, causing trouble, and I come across a Playboy. And I’m like, ‘Oh my God, Dad is cheating on Mom. He’s got Playboy.'”

“So I run upstairs and I’m like, ‘Mom, Dad’s cheating on you! He has Playboy!’ And she [responded], ‘Well, I’m in it.'”

Aldridge said she was fascinated by her mother’s photos, which were for the magazine’s February 1976 issue.

“She showed me and I was like, ‘Wow, this is so cool.’ The next day I told all my friends and couldn’t have been more proud. My [older] brother was traumatized, but I thought it was awesome,” the Victoria’s Secret Angel said.

Zeke and Lily (Book Six): Dream Catching

Zeke and Lily (Book Six): Dream Catching

Winter in Lancaster County is over. well almost. Maybe one more snowstorm yet to deal with. Zeke couldn’t be happier to see the cold weather leave while Lily could stand a few more opportunities to make snow angels before spring arrives. So much is happening as Lily’s sister enters the end of her pregnancy. The couples which Lily and Zeke have befriended are all married and making plans to expand their own families soon. Zeke and Lily are just a few months from their wedding day. As Lily’s illness remains so does the concern for her health. Zeke splits his time between New York City (attending meetings with a publication company for his book) and Lancaster (tending to Lily’s frail condition while getting ready for marriage).Marriages, pregnancies, health – all issues on Lily’s mind that culminate into nightmares she begins to have about people she loves being hurt or killed. The nightmares intensify and after a few deja vu moments prove her nightmares to be premonitions, she seeks help from a psychologist before she loses her mind. Her greatest fear is losing every good thing in her life – a scenario which has played out many times before in her life, leaving her heart broken and empty. When her nightmares begin to include Zeke getting harmed, she comes to the brink of a nervous breakdown. But the ever-patient Zeke – the Daddy in her life, walks her through each trial as it arises. She comes to appreciate the things she may have been overlooking all along. Will a half moon amulet from a trinket shop bring Zeke a protection he never knew he needed? Will Lily’s magic touch be strong enough when she needs it to be the most?Follow Zeke and Lily (and Pretzel), Grant and Keira (and Nittany), Billy and Taylor (and baby on the way), a dragon-tattooed man, Mr. Woody and Erica as the catching of dreams leads to a final chapter that couldn’t be seen coming.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover 2014: Chrissy Teigen, Lily Aldridge AND Nina Agdal Strip Down!

This year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue has finally been revealed — and there is not one, not two, but THREE cover girls! The stars of the highly anticipated 50th anniversary issue will also be announced on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Thursday night.

The cover, which the magazine is calling “the happiest cover in swimsuit history,” features Chrissy Teigen, Lily Aldridge and Nina Agdal scantily clad in just neon bikini bottoms. The very fitting theme of the 50th anniversary issue is “Past, Present and Future.” People Magazine reports that a trio has not appeared on the cover since 1994.

Teigen, who made her debut in 2010 as “Rookie of The Year” is the veteran of the group, with Agdal following two years later and Aldridge making her first appearance this year. Covering the Swimsuit Issue can catapult a model’s career — and has a long-standing reputation for empowering the women who appear in the issue. Teigen has been known to praise them for their minimal use of Photoshop. Add that to the fact that the three women look absolutely gorgeous, and it’s really no surprise they were chosen as a trio.

The models join a long list of beautiful women (Christie Brinkley and Tyra Banks, to name a few) who have had the honor of covering the magazine, and it’s completely well deserved. We’ll have to wait until Feb. 18 to see the entire spread, but for now, take a look at the cover below and on the Sports Illustrated Swim Daily blog and let us know what you think!

‘Hard Out Here’: Lily Allen Skewers the Music Industry

If the past few months in the music industry have left you demoralized — what with the white supremacist capitalist patriarchy and all — Lily Allen might make you feel better, emphasis on might. Her single, with the sarcastic refrain “It’s hard out here for a bitch,” satirizes all of it and takes some ugly missteps along the way. In doing so, she reinvigorates an important conversation about satire, race politics, and feminism.

    1. Surrounding herself with twerking black women, she makes a reference to Miley Cyrus’ use of women of color as props in her VMA appearance:

    2013-11-14-LA1.png

    2. She points to the extreme standards of beauty for pop stars, singing the lyrics “You should probably lose some weight/’Cause we can’t see your bones” and beginning the video in surgery alongside a discussion about her “terrifying” post-baby body:

    2013-11-14-LA2.png

    3. She refers to the “rape-y” lyrics of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” singing:

Don’t you want to have somebody who objectifies you?
Have you thought about your butt?
Who’s gonna tear it in two?

This is a retort to Thicke’s line, “I’ll give you something to tear your ass in two.”

    4. She refers to the Sinead O’Connor/Amanda Palmer debate about whether women in the music industry have agency. Breaking the fourth wall, the video features a middle-aged, white male executive in a suit telling her to treat a banana like a penis and showing her and her dancers how to twerk.

    2013-11-14-LA3.png

    2013-11-14-LA4.png

    5. Finally, she goes after materialism and product placement:

    2013-11-14-LA5.png

    Her final lines:

Inequality promises that it’s here to stay
Always trust in justice ’cause it’s not goin’ away

What to Make of It All?

Not everyone is loving this video. Some are arguing that she is using her race and class privilege to take advantage of the debate; her use of women of color as props, for example, is no different than Cyrus’. Even if the frame is satire, the visual is the same.

Some of her lyrics mock rap and hip hop generally, making it a racialized scapegoat for everything that’s wrong in the world, which happens. She sings, “I won’t be bragging about my cars/Or talking about my chains.” In one scene she washes rims surrounded by champagne, in another she mocks the car culture associated with hip hop.

    2013-11-14-LA6.png

    2013-11-14-LA7.png

Even if her satire were straight on, there’s always the risk that people won’t get it, despite the fact that she refers to it directly. This is a serious risk as indicated by the fact that a significant proportion of politically conservative viewers of The Colbert Report don’ t know he’s kidding.

I’ll be interested to see the conversation about the song and video as it plays out. In the meantime, I’m pleased for the reminder that the music industry isn’t monolithic.

First, there are people in the industry that object to racism, sexism, and materialism: Lily Allen, I think, but also likely many of the people who worked with her to make this song and video happen.

Second, there’s money in fighting back. This highly produced single and video would not be here if executives didn’t think it would be profitable. They think there are people out there who are sick of exploitation in the music industry… and they’re right.

Alternatively, this is just a modified version of the same exploitation that Cyrus is guilty of: a feminism that serves white women well, but continues to marginalize women of color.
