Live Action Lion King Footage Perfectly Captures Animated Classic

The first look at Disney’s upcoming live action The Lion King film from director John Favreau was shown at D23 Expo, and goodness gracious, it knocked my damn socks off.

Disney has turned a lot of its animated classics into live action films already, and with new takes on Dumbo, Aladdin and Mulan on the horizon, it’s not stopping anytime soon. But Favreau proved with The Jungle Book that the technology developed to bring these animals to life through CGI did create an immersive new adventure that justified its existence.

Seth Rogen And Billy Eichner To Voice Timon And Pumbaa In Live-Action ‘Lion King’

A live-action “Lion King” is in the works and we couldn’t be more excited for who has been tapped to play iconic duo Timon and Pumba.

Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner are slated to voice the warthog and meerkat we’ve known and loved for the past 20 years, according to The Wrap.

Directed by Jon Favreau, this live-action remake comes on the heels of his other recreation of a Disney classic, “The Jungle Book.”

On staying true to the roots of the story, Favreau told The Hollywood Reporter:

“People grew up with it in an age of video where they’re watching it over and over again. So, I have to really examine all of those plot points. Also, the myths are very strong in that, so you’re hitting something even deeper than the movie sometimes. What I’m trying to do is honor what was there .… There are certain expectations people have.”

In addition Eichner and Rogen, “The Lion King” reboot already has Donald Glover and James Earl Jones in its cast. Glover will play Simba and Jones will revive his role as Mufasa.

Are you internally screaming? Because we’re so AMPED for Rogen and Eichner’s rendition of “Hakuna Matata.”

2019 can’t come soon enough!

HuffPost has reached out to Rogen and Eichner for comment and will update this piece accordingly.

‘The Lion King’ Remake Has A New Simba

Back in September, Disney announced plans to create a remake of its animated classic “The Lion King.” This time around, director Jon Favreau will likely use CGI animation to create a circle of life that looks much more realistic than it did in the 1994 version.

Disney is currently rebooting many of the music-filled movies that dominated previous generations’ childhoods ― including “Beauty and the Beast,” “Cinderella,” “Pete’s Dragon” and “The Jungle Book,” which Favreau also directed.

In very 2016 fashion, Favreau used emojis to reveal his involvement in the new movie on Twitter:

Last night, Favreau tweeted more details about the project, finally revealing that Donald Glover will play Simba and James Earl Jones will reclaim the role of the patriarch, Mufasa.

Glover is becoming reboot royalty. He just landed the role of Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo “Star Wars” movie. Of course, Disney now owns the rights to that franchise as well.

Glover’s two Golden Globe wins earlier this year, for the creation and lead acting role in his new show, “Atlanta,” are contributing to the young actor’s rise.

Jones, meanwhile, has voiced Mufasa multiple times since he first lent his talents to the original Disney movie. His voice appears in a “Lion King” video game, short side clips, and the sequels “The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride” and “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar.”

The actor also recently reprised his speaking role as the villainous Darth Vader in Disney’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

Hopefully Jones and Glover can pull off a father-son dynamic in “The Lion King” that has less of an underlying dark side than the one in “Star Wars.”

It remains unclear when the new version of “The Lion King” will finally debut.

Kristin Chenoweth On ‘LION’ And Adoption

It’s hardly a secret that I was adopted as a baby and quite frankly, there’s absolutely no reason it should be. As I’ve grown, I’ve watched the conversation and perceptions about adopted kids and families shift, but nothing has quite captured the truth, both the good and the ugly, of adoption like the film “LION.” It’s an honest look at adoption and the not uncommon feelings surrounding identity that come up for many people. Without getting on a soapbox, the film stands up to some commonly held misperceptions about adoption, the stigma many families deal with and supports the often life changing impact it can have. When it comes down to it, “LION” is a story of love and family, and the idea that we are shaped by both our environment and our DNA.

If you’re not already familiar, “LION” is the true story of Saroo Brierley, who at 5 years old gets lost on a train, ending up on the streets of Calcutta before ultimately being adopted by an Australian couple. Fast forward 25 years later, Saroo uses Google Earth, when it was still a new technology to try to find his birth home.

The story alone is incredible, but the cast is simply remarkable in their portrayals — and if you’re anything like me, they’ll have you sobbing through an entire box of tissues. This film is an emotional journey boosted by the gorgeous landscapes of India and Australia, and no surprise that I noticed the music, which ties together the longing, heart wrenching, and joyous moments throughout.

When it comes down to it, ‘LION’ is a story of love and family, and the idea that we are shaped by both our environment and our DNA.

Dev Patel plays Saroo as an adult struggling with his identity, something I’ve found to be an experience every adopted kid feels at one point in their lives or another. The results of his search are beyond belief, but it’s his journey that resonated most strongly with my own experience. On the one hand, you share the unconditional love for your parents that they have for you, not to mention eternal gratitude for the life they’ve given you. But as Saroo shows, there’s often a lingering thought about where you came from. We all yearn for our truth; who we are, where we come from, maybe where we get certain quirks or talents (for me I long wondered where my voice came from since my mother very well knows it was not from her). But finding those truths is the most personal of journeys, coming to each of us at different times and in different ways. On top of that, there’s always a part of you that worries this is somehow a betrayal as if your parents and your life are not enough.

“LION” expertly navigates those thoughts. The movie gives you so much time in India, giving you a complete sense of Saroo’s life and family there. As an adult he holds on to those memories, but also can’t bring himself to open up to that part of his identity until it nearly paralyzes and destroys his life.

I can honestly say being adopted was one of the best things to ever happen to me. It was never something that was hidden from me and it is not something I have ever been ashamed of.

Nicole Kidman who plays Saroo’s adoptive mother, Sue, made my heart break. Nicole herself is part of the community of adoptive mothers and it so clearly impacts her performance in this film. She simply nails it. She is the image of an understanding parent, whose love has no limits. In one scene, she explains to Saroo that the children she and her husband brought into their lives enriched it beyond words; that they chose him. In a way, she gives Saroo permission to search, taking away the guilt because at the end of the day, she will always be his mother.

I can honestly say being adopted was one of the best things to ever happen to me. It was never something that was hidden from me and it is not something I have ever been ashamed of. I recognize how fortunate I am to have parents who love and support me unconditionally. The fact that they are not my biological parents does not change the fact that they are simply, my parents.

Not everyone can say that, but I count myself lucky to have a birth mother who loved me enough to know she wasn’t ready to be a mom. I’m lucky that I have wonderful parents who chose me. I often say adoption is a full-circle blessing and I truly believe it. Adopted children were not abandoned, we were chosen. That is one of the core messages of “LION,” serving as a beautiful reminder that love knows no boundaries.

Lion

Saroo Brierley, a five-year old boy from a small town in India, got lost on a train ride, wound up at the massive Howrah Junction railway station in Calcutta and became an orphaned street kid. An Australian couple adopted him, but years later at age 25, his yearning for his birth family took him on a journey back to India. His story became the #1 international best seller A Long Way From Home, which is the basis of this extraordinary and very emotional film.

Dev Patel stars in the drama Lion.

This tale almost sells itself. Once the footage rolls of a five-year-old kid, Saroo (Sunny Pawar), roaming the streets of Calcutta, 930 miles away from home, you’re hooked. So tiny, so courageous, how can anyone not love him? Watching him evade the police, pedophiles and other dangers, will make your heart go out to him and it won’t come back until the end of the movie.

Saroo’s isolation in a busy city is intensified because the locals speak Bengali and the little boy only knows Hindi. By the time he is adopted from an orphanage in Tasmania, you’re ready for him to experience good fortune. That starts when he meets his adopted Australian parents Sue (Nicole Kidman) and John Brierley (David Wenham).

Most of Saroo’s childhood in Melbourne is far better than his life as a vagabond. The one area of friction surrounds his fellow adopted Indian brother Mantosh (Divian Ladwa), who has severe emotional/psychological problems and a negative energy that wears on his parents unmercifully.

Life looks up when the twentysomething Saroo (Dev Patel, Slumdog Millionaire) finds a girlfriend, Lucy (Rooney Mara). They seem happy together, but something bothers him. He yearns to find the brother and mother who once loved him. But he can’t remember the name of his hometown (Khandwa) correctly. Enter Google maps. Where there’s a will there’s a high-tech way.

The premise is enough to make any viewer run through a box of Kleenex. Garth Davis’ sensitive direction makes you feel for the orphan the entire movie. Davis is particularly successful with the earlier chapters, making the streets look perilous, adults suspicious and the future exceedingly grim.

Luke Davies’ screenplay fleshes out the book with vivid characterizations and memorable dialogue that conveys insight in surprising ways. One of the best scenes is when Saroo confronts Sue about why she adopted children. He assumes she was barren, instead she tells him that John and she made a conscious decision to find children who could use their help and not have kids of their own.

The pacing in Act II, when Saroo is older, lags. This is when you might get restless and contemplate the film’s 120-minute length with some trepidation. Also, though on paper Lucy and Saroo are madly in love, something about Rooney Mara’s cool performance and Patel’s distracted character makes their relationship seem hollow. As the final act kicks in, and Saroo plans his mission, the film regains its footing. Saroo: “I have to find home. They need to know I’m alive.” The one hitch in these final scenes is you are never aware of how a 25-year-old with no visible means of support can afford such a journey.

Dev Patel has come a long way since Slumdog Millionaire. He played a very beguiling supporting role in the Exotic Marigold Hotel series. He was stoic as the pioneer Indian mathematician in The Man Who Knew Infinity. And now his stirring portrayal of Saroo, a young man destined to find his home, carries this bio film over the finish line.

Kidman brings a sweetness to the adopted mom role that resonates in all her scenes. It’s as if she is floating on a cloud all her own. Wenham also exhibits a positive serenity that would make him “Father of the Year” in anyone’s book. Divian Ladwa’s interpretation of the disturbed brother adds sympathy to a part that could have been dismissed as a pure annoyance.

The entire cast in India gives the most natural performances, particularly Priyanka Bose as the incandescent mother and Abhishek Bharate as Saroo’s brother who loses him on the train.

The camerawork by Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty), of shanty interiors and overhead shots of India through a Google lens, will keep your visual attention. Minus the slow mid section, editor Alexandre de Franceschi (We Don’t Live Here Anymore) runs a tight ship.

A strong and emotionally fulfilling interpretation of a true event that seems stranger than fiction.

A memorable journey.

PETA To Make A Killing Off Dentist-Slaying Lion Costume?

Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer has been chewed out since he killed Cecil the Lion in in Zimbabwe in July.

Now animal-rights group PETA has turned it into their own big game with a Halloween costume that depicts a dentist getting attacked and eaten by the king of the jungle.

The costume, called “Cecil’s Revenge,” sells for $ 139,99 and includes a bloody lab jacket with a stuffed lion pouncing on the back, according to a press release.

Customers can add to the effect by accessorizing with their own toothbrush, dental drill or bow and arrow.

“As animals continue to die in agony at the hands of trophy hunters, it’s only fitting for people to make fun of Palmer for his illegal, violent pursuit,” People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals president Ingrid Newkirk said in the release.

The carnivorous costume is a fundraiser for the organization.

A few days ago, Costumeish.com, a southern California-based costume company revealed it’s selling  an outfit depicting Palmer killing Cecil.

Newkirk approves of that costume even though it depicts Palmer killing Cecil.

“Nasty little people try to make themselves feel good by killing wild animals who are minding their own business, so we at PETA think it most fitting that people make fun of the dentist for his sick, illegal pursuit by fashioning a hideous Halloween costume after him, as they would after Freddy Krueger or Jason,” she told HuffPost by email.

Am I Actually a Lion or a Sheep in a Lion’s Body?

As I fell down the rabbit hole of Instagram late one night, as many of us unhealthily do, I found myself staring at the pictures of people who once were friends, good friends, and I couldn’t shake a feeling of contempt, annoyance and a general disdain.

One photo led to a different person’s profile, which lead to another photo, which led to another person’s profile, and before I knew it, I forgot how I had even gotten to the profile I landed on, especially because I in fact do not follow any of these people. However, curiosity killed the cat, or lion as this story would have it, and I always find it beyond fascinating how people we tend to not enjoy seem to find one another. My guess is they share a similar quality that we’d actively not wanted to be a part of, and like attracts like.

Sitting in the dark, staring at the glowing screen on my phone, the recently popular saying, “A lion doesn’t lose sleep over the opinion of sheep,” came to mind. Here I was a lion, and there they were, a herd of sheep. Yet, I was up later than I wanted to be, and it was in fact because of people I would relate to as sheep.

However, something about that saying felt somewhat unfair, not quite right, and made a lion somehow better than sheep. And while I do not necessarily like all these people because of past interactions, I find it healthier to let things go, and not think myself better than anyone else.

Sure, lions are technically more alpha to sheep, and in a head to head match a lion would greatly out preform a sheep in every possible way, but who’s to say that the lion doesn’t care, or is in fact better? That’s what the statement is implying after all, right?

We’ve all seen the amazingly adorable, and somewhat astonishing videos of animals that shouldn’t be getting along, interacting in such friendly manners, gently playing with each other, caring for one another, and cuddling. There’s the hippo and the dog, the chicken and the cat, the baby deer and the lion.

It was this last duo that seemed to relate somewhat perfectly to what I had been pondering, and got me thinking. How were the two able to interact in such “unnatural” ways? What could possibly be different about this interaction? How had they “befriended” each other?

Then it hit me: Hunger.

Hunger and thirst are what motivate us to act in such “animalistic” ways, and can completely change the interactions that we have. When we aren’t hungry, or hungry for something someone else has we tend to play nice as a whole. Both animal kingdom and mankind are able to shift primal forces into civilized needs.

While a deer and a sheep are in fact not the same, the idea correlates quite easily that normally we’d expect the lion to simply kill and eat the deer, or sheep, but when the lion is not hungry, she sees the deer differently, more complex, more equal.

Primal urges are replaced with an intricate thought.

I don’t know what came of the two animals, but considering this interaction opened my eyes in two specific ways, and helped me identify why I had such a negative reaction to people I once cared deeply for.

Firstly, I had felt hurt because I had been left behind by sheep, a herd, a group of people. Secondly lions are more than meat hungry death eaters.

As I pondered lions and sheep and deer, oh my, I began to understand why my emotions had initially been so strong, and why that specific quote can feel quite empowering. Ultimately, it’s because no one likes to feel left behind.

Here I was late at night, unexpectedly staring at my ex, my ex-friends, and a really promising, but bad first date all hanging out together, appearing to be happy. They had created their herd. Whether or not they’re all friends, in fact happy, or just using the same person for an awesome beach house is unknown to me, but I understand that being a part of a group, or a herd, if you will, feels safer, better, more comfortable.

As I realized the deeper emotions of hurt, loss, and a tinge of sadness I realized it was time to turn off my phone, and to not wish these guys anything but happiness, and if they had found it together than great.

I also came to the realization that while I may feel left out at that one trivial moment late night, I was in fact not alone, and like the lion far more complex. I had allowed myself the moment of hunger, but realized I was not hungry for anything they had at all. I was and am beyond full.

By being left behind by the large herd of sheep, I have been able to find my smaller, but stronger pride of lions. I have been able to satisfy my hunger, and at moments even play nice with the sheep. In general, I have been able to understand that it is ok to still be a lion, and care about the opinion of sheep, but not let it be what affects me, drives me and keeps me up a night.

My pride of lions is one of strength, honor, understanding and a civilized sense of hunger. We treat others as equals, look past our primal thirst and take pride in our pride.

Ultimately, what I have realized is that we aren’t just lions or just sheep, but as we interact with each other, we have the opportunity to take the courage of the lion and marry it with the gentleness of a sheep to move forwards both proud and humble. For if one can be such differing ideas at once then they truly live a life of love.

Empire State Building Pays Tribute To Endangered Animals, Remembers Cecil The Lion

Cecil the lion, a majestic black-maned beast who once roamed the woodlands of Zimbabwe’s Hwange, was found dead last month on the outskirts of the national park. He had been killed by an American dentist for tens of thousands of dollars, then skinned and beheaded for a hunting trophy.

Cecil’s death has sparked outrage worldwide, as people everywhere lament the damage that humans continue to inflict on the populations of not just lions, but the planet’s many endangered creatures. On Saturday night, the Empire State Building served as a timely, sky-high reminder of this devastating impact, as images and video of threatened animals were projected onto the façade of the iconic New York City skyscraper.

Cecil was one of the animals featured.

For three hours, “insects, sea creatures, mammals, and birds crawled, swam, and flew over” the Empire State Building “as spectators ‘oohed’ and ‘awed,’” said The Verge. Snow leopards, tigers, lemurs, and manta rays were among the creatures on display.

The spectacle, achieved with the help of 40 projectors, was organized by the Oceanic Preservation Society and the filmmakers of “Racing Extinction,” an upcoming documentary about humans’ impact on threatened species.

“I’m hoping with this film and this event, we can raise awareness and start a movement,” the film’s director Louie Psihoyos (of “The Cove” fame) told The Verge.

NBC New York says the projections were a first for the Empire State Building, which is typically lit up with colors or, on occasion, light shows.

In total, 160 species were featured on the skyscraper. The New York Times says the production cost $ 1 million.

Kittens Make Epic Fight Scene From ‘The Lion King’ So Much Better

Question: How do you improve on an epic scene from a classic Disney movie?

Answer: Swap out the animated characters for live kittens. Keep all the action the same, just with kittens.

Here’s an example, using the climactic fight scene from “The Lion King.”

Grown-up Simba? Bam! He’s a kitten now. Scar? DONE. Kitten-ized.

We can’t imagine how long it took for YouTuber Pasdidée to wrestle his actors into line, but it’s truly a work of art.

It is not, however, the only time someone recreated “The Lion King” with kittens.

Stephen Colbert Calls Jon Stewart A ‘Liberal Lion,’ Praises ‘Rosewater’ And Gives Him A Kiss

On his umpteenth stop of his press tour for “Rosewater,” Jon Stewart, the person, sat down with Stephen Colbert, the character, for an endearing meeting of the old friends/nemeses.

In part one of the Thursday night interview, Colbert reminded Stewart to soak up his “Colbert Report” experience because there are only 12 episodes left, then chided him for being the “voice of the left” but failing to increase the youth voter turnout during the midterm elections.

“How does it feel to know that your entire career could have just as well been shouted into a sock and thrown off an overpass?” Colbert asked.

In part two, Colbert put his politics aside and praised Stewart for his directorial debut, even going so far as to say he should “stay in his lane” instead of doing both TV and film so well. Stewart opened up about the inspiration for “Rosewater,” showed a clip and told the story of Jason Jones being mistaken for an actual U.S. spy.

But the best part of the interview has to be the ending, in which Stewart shows how exhausted he is from doing interviews and receives a hug and a kiss from Colbert in return.
