How a Simple Mistake Helped Night of the Living Dead Become a Classic

George Romero’s horror classic Night of the Living Dead is where the modern concept of the zombie as we understand it today really started. The film didn’t just essentially launch the zombie sub-genre, but it remains to this day eminently re-watchable — truly one of the giants of horror cinema.

And indeed, as the film hits its 50th anniversary this year, it continues to inspire new fans, new works, and new critical evaluation. The new book Journey of the Living Dead: A Tribute to Fifty Years of Flesh Eaters, by Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg, celebrates 100 years of cinematic zombies with an analysis of how Night of the Living Dead permanently impacted the media landscape. Blumberg, who is an occasional contributor to IGN, has provided us with an exclusive excerpt from the book which delves into the curious case of NOTLD’s copyright, of lack thereof, and how it helped to contribute to the film’s massive success. Read on for the full excerpt…

STREET SIGNS: A Ma Maniére Living Merges Streetwear Retail With Hotel Suites

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A Ma Maniére is officially open, but it’s not open. Because of the hordes that lined H Street in Northeast D.C. on Friday, store owner James Whitner told the crowd that he’d postponed the opening, even as a few still meandered about hoping he would change his mind.
“We will never release a sneaker from this location again,” said Whitner, who on that day was releasing the Nike Off-White Prestos, the Adidas Yung-1s and several Jordans. “I’m going to try to tie releases to community outreach initiatives and if you participate, you can buy. I can’t change anything if I don’t change anything.”
For brands such as J.W. Anderson, Greg Lauren, Comme des Garçons Play and Visvim, Whitner’s A Ma Maniére concept is a chance for the brands to introduce themselves to a covetable customer. In most cases, Whitner opens shops in secondary markets such as Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C.; Pittsburgh; Houston, and Tampa Bay, Fla., and is the first person to bring these brands to a particular region. He also runs stores in Atlanta.

Velocity Honolulu Offers New Take on Luxury Living

Think about retailing in Honolulu and the first thing to come to mind is the Ala Moana shopping center, the seventh largest mall in the U.S. and home to Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and a long list of specialty stores.
But there’s another development making strides in the city — at least among the luxury community: Velocity Honolulu, a 235,000-square-foot mixed-use development at 888 Kapiolani Boulevard that sports an unusual offer.
The development, which is located less than a mile from downtown, features upscale boutiques and restaurants as well as a luxury car dealership and auto concierge program along with 388 high-end condominiums. It opened in 2016.
One piece of the project is Sixty-One Hawaii, a men’s boutique that focuses on boutique American brands such as Jeanshop, Slightly Alabama, 7 Diamonds, Jack Mason and others. The store also has a four-chair barbershop that offers Old School cuts and classic shaves. The store opened at the end of last year.
“Our specialty is making special retail places,” said Brad Nicolai, president of JN Group, which developed the Velocity project with Oliver McMillan LLC. JN Group was founded by Nicolai’s father, Joe, more than a half-century ago and is one of the oldest automotive companies

Halle Berry Is On a Picturesque Bora Bora Vacation — and Living Her ‘Best Life’

Halle Berry has escaped Hollywood — albeit briefly.

The Kidnap actress extensively documented her Thanksgiving week trip to Bora Bora on Instagram, writing that she was “distancing myself from the bulls—.”

She began sharing her vacation snaps before even arriving to the French Polynesian island, taking a photo of the surrounding beautiful, crystal-blue waters which she added to her Instagram Story alongside multiple airplane emoji stickers.

Upon arrival she added, simply, “Yass Yass Yass.”

The 51-year-old actress later gushed over the tropical retreat’s beauty, writing that “Mornings are amazing…” alongside a picture of herself taking in the sights.

Berry also revealed the trip’s secret purpose on social media: “distancing myself from the bulls—

Relaxing while taking in Bora Bora’s spectacular views wasn’t the only activity the Academy Award-winning actress had planned for her vacation. “Cheers to pour decisions 😂 ,” she cheekily captioned a photo of two drinks next to a pair of shot glasses.

Michelle And Barack Obama Are Living Their Best Lives As Tourists In Italy

Michelle Obama’s vacation style just keeps getting better and better.

The former first lady looked effortlessly casual and cool while walking around Montalcino, Italy over the weekend.

Obama chose a $ 397 one-shoulder pink-and-white striped top from Teija with frayed white jeans that cut off at the ankle and white sandals. She accessorized with hoop earrings, black sunglasses, bracelets and a white cross-body purse.

She’s truly living her best life:

Former president Barack Obama gave a talk on climate change earlier this month and it appears the Obamas made the work trip into a vacation. The two are reportedly staying at the incredible Borgo Finocchieto villa in the Tuscan countryside.

Barack Obama is clearly loving his time in Italy, as he’s transformed into a rock star and played a few rounds of golf:

After Obama left office in January, the couple has traveled all around the globe. They’ve made stops in Palm Springs, the British Virgin Islands, an island in the South Pacific and even enjoyed a little yachting with their famous friends.

While many people have lamented the Obamas’ absence during this turbulent time, Michelle promised the two would be back soon during a recent appearance in Washington, D.C.

“We’re not gone, we’re just breathing, y’all. Let us breathe,” Obama said, per People magazine. “We’ve got to get our new lives set up.”

Luna Legend Is Living Her Best Life In Morocco. You Can Do The Same.

Who wouldn’t want to live like Luna Legend and visit Morocco?

The daughter of Chrissy Teigen and John Legend accompanied her parents on vacation to this land of mosques, medinas and markets, and the photos and videos are precious.

Ah!!! So many firsts

A post shared by chrissy teigen (@chrissyteigen) on

Even if Luna isn’t your travel buddy, Morocco is worth a trip. The teeming city of Marrakech was named TripAdvisor’s top destination in the world in 2015, and Fez is equally mesmerizing

Here are some sights to plan your own jaunt around:

Jemaa el-Fnaa

This iconic, action-packed market in Marrakech offers everything from snake charmers to fresh-squeezed juices to ostrich eggs, kebabs and musical performances.

Chefchaouen

Alleyways, walls and doors come in various photo-ready shades of blue at this historic village in the Rif Mountains.

Ben Youssef Madrasa

Students came to this school in the UNESCO World Heritage-approved Medina of Marrakech to study the Quran. You may find yourself inspecting the school’s intricate architecture, too.

Chouara Tannery

This working tannery in Fez still operates much as it did in the 11th century. Watch the action from a leather shop on a nearby terrace.

Casablanca

Hassan II Mosque and its sky-high minaret await in this city that inspired the famous movie.

Happy travels!

WATCH: Living in Interesting Times

Ever hear the expression, “May you live in interesting times”…? I think there’s little doubt that we are doing so. I hope this video will help you not only survive but also thrive, no matter the challenges.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

No Shortcuts For Yuja Wang, The World’s Greatest Living Pianist

Yuja Wang was still an undergraduate at Curtis when she got the call: piano soloist Murray Perahia was under the weather. Could she jump on a plane to southern California and perform the next day with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields?

She could, and she did.

The pianist, barely 22, played with authority and sensitivity, wowing the musically literate in the Orange County audience (yes, there are some even in Costa Mesa).

She also astonished the ensemble’s legendary conductor, Sir Neville Marriner. The audience was treated to the unique tableau of this towering figure on the music scene, 82 and approaching retirement, gazing with fascination at a young woman in the first throes of her career playing breathtaking, breakneck encores.

Wang captivated another top conductor, Michael Tilson Thomas, at another impromptu performance, this time at Carnegie Hall, filling in for yet another ailing soloist. Her playing moved Thomas, a mentor figure in Wang’s career, literally to bow down to her on the famous stage.

Word got around and piano virtuosi most likely started taking better care of their health.

Seven short years later, Wang has become an international star in her own right, touring the world, named 2017 Musical America Artist of the Year, and signed to Deutsche Grammophon, classical music’s most respected brand.

Last week, Wang took her talents to Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall, where she performed a sold out recital with violinist Leonidas Kavakos. Wang could have taken the easy road and performed an evening of hummable crowd-pleasers, but that’s not what you do when you’re one of the most talented, enthralling, and even mesmerizing performers on the world scene.

Instead, Wang and Kavakos performed four extremely difficult pieces by Janacek, Schubert, Debussy, and Bartok. They are rarely performed because most touring musicians don’t want to work that hard. The majority of the top dogs have a repertoire of concertos they can play in their sleep, and with some of their performances it sounds that way.

It used to bother Wang, when she was younger, that audiences initially compared her to Lang Lang, the Chinese prodigy known more for his showmanship than his technical skills. European audiences in particular held a prejudice against Asian performers, believing them capable of technical greatness but lacking the emotion that great music ushers forth.

They don’t make those complaints any longer. Wang won over Europeans, Asians, North Americans, and probably also Martians and Venetians with her ability to play with both drama and dexterity.

Wang certainly blew the minds of her Lincoln Center audience. She played with urgency, brilliance, color, energy, and emotion. The Washington Post calls her “arguably” the hottest pianist in the world; they won’t get an argument out of me.

The pairing of Wang and Kavakos seems odd to the eye and sometimes to the ear. He’s world class, yet her talent comes from another planet. Wang dresses as elegantly as she plays; in New York, her jaw-droppingly elegant Atelier Rosemarie Umetsu gowns matched the music.

The good news is that you get to hear four pieces seldom played, and you get to experience Wang’s fiery virtuosity. If you missed the show in New York, you can catch it in southern California and Western Europe over the next few months (YujaWang.com for details).

One of their dates is at Segerstrom Concert Hall in Orange County, where the then-unknown Wang astonished Sir Neville Marriner, back when his career was winding down and hers had just begun. Just seven years later, she has become the ultimate must-see musician for anyone who loves blindingly great performance.

In what is best described as a digestible approach to 2017 consumer predictions, Euromonitor International has run through a series of factors certain to affect worldwide consumption.
Along with slow juicers, robotic vacuum cleaners and Shopkins, the consumer market research company is banking on an increase in Millennials living with their parents due to rising real estate prices, steep college tuition and escalating personal debt. Around the world, 55 percent of the population will live in cities — a 5 percent hike compared with 2007. The median age will hit 30.1 years — another upswing compared to 27.9 years a decade ago. Despite rising incomes, better standards of living and improved health care in many parts of the world, obesity and diabetes are on the rise as a result of higher caloric diets and increasingly sedentary lifestyles.

How to Earn a Better Living in Real Estate

How to Earn a Better Living in Real Estate

This is not a book which tells real estate agents how to do their job – there is plenty of training available which already does that. This book has a laser focus on showing agents how to use very different and easy strategies to get many more referrals, and many more listings, in a way that eliminates competition, no matter how entrenched they may be in the market. It achieves this by:* Assisting with systematisation and accountability* Sharing new and simple wordtracks that are phenomenal at getting referrals* Teaching simple sentences that stick potential vendors to you like glue, so that no other agent can get a look in* Eliminating the stall, so that you close more listings first visit* Eliminating even your most hated objections, before they come upThe book also includes crucial extracts from our NLP training program specifically for sales people, which can be used to enhance business relationships as well as personal relationships. The icing on the cake is the free support site, where readers can access both online and offline support to master and implement the very powerful strategies detailed in the book.

Rather you should use it historically, as an indication of what was known and believed at time it was written. “Despite the fact that much has been written during the past two or three years with reference to Eugenics, it is quite evident to any one interested in the subject that the average intelligent individual knows very little about it so far as its scope and intent are concerned. This is not to be wondered at, for the subject has not been presented to the ordinary reader in a form that would tend to encourage inquiry or honest investigation. • Whose Truth Are You Living?

    “Believe nothing.
No matter where you read it,
    Or who said it,
Unless it agrees with your own reason
    And your own common sense.”
    ~ Buddha

I wonder how many of us are basing our lives on someone else’s truth? Many people take what has been given to them as “the way it is” and automatically live within the confines of that idea, never challenging that idea or looking at the possibilities that may lie beyond it. It requires courage to challenge and question the traditions and relative “truths” that, over the years (centuries), have been generationally passed down and blindly accepted. Whether we are talking politics, religion, race or any other area of our lives where we tend to simply accept the opinions of others without considering how it really rests in our own hearts, Buddha’s admonition is worth exploring.

Whose truth are you living? What truth has shaped the life you call your own today? Does it agree with your own reason and common sense, or is it based on someone else’s? With conscious self inquiry you need go no further than your own mind for the answer because it’s your truth that you are seeking, not another’s, yes? Something to reflect upon.

Jake Owen: Living the Good Life

It’s hard to get Jake Owen away from the water.
Even on a day off from his nationwide tour with Kenny Chesney, the country music star made a side trip to Lake Tahoe.
“It’s my first time here, so I’m going to see what the lake has to offer,” he said.
An avid boater, fisherman, wakeboarder and surfer, Owen has built a following with good-time anthems such as “Beachin’” that connect with a youthful, fun-loving audience.
So it makes  sense that Owen has teamed up with the Salt Life apparel brand that will be cosponsoring his tour this fall.
He’ll also serve as one of the company’s “team members,” which include fishermen, surfers and divers.
“I’ve been a fan of what the brand has to offer for a while. It complements the life I live,” Owen said. “I like to spend my free time on the water. That’s how I unwind.”
The singer said he’s a “big clothing guy and I enjoy getting dressed up,” and at award shows he likes to “look nice and dapper.” But he’s most comfortable in board shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops. “My day-to-day life is very casual,” he said.
It’s that sensibility that will be reflected in a Jake Owen collection he’s currently

    Living Life to the Fullest

    2015-07-06-1436190059-1207332-BirminghamphotoNAR7615.jpg

In John 10:10 we find the reported words of Jesus, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” These words have been translated into several different languages by many people. Although the words are written in various ways, the essence of Jesus’s words is that he came so that we can have better lives.

Jesus was an exemplary human being — God manifested in human form. God has, does, and will manifest himself in different forms until he decides otherwise. This is the omnipotence and greatness of our God who lives in us and manifests himself through us and various other forms. By studying the life of Jesus with an open mind, we can learn many things that will help us personally and professionally in the journey of life. We can have life to the full or life more abundantly. We can be more successful and enjoy our lives more.

“I want you to enjoy the rest of your journey and live a better, more successful life with abundance in the areas of your choice. You can have abundance in several areas, such as more love, joy, peace, new experiences, health, and wealth, and you can be more successful. Success means different things to different people. For example, to some, success means a significant amount of money, while to others it means better health and fitness, loving relationships, freedom from worry, promotion at work, or the achievement of various goals. Some also refer to success as progress on the journey to achieving one’s goals. What does success mean to you? If you are not living a happy, full, or successful life or the life of your dreams, then it is time to transform your life and live a better one.

Transforming your life is an interesting, exciting process. You may experience delays along the way and have to take some detours, but do not get disappointed and or be discouraged for these things are only temporary. Do not let anything or anyone deter you from your God-given destiny to live a full, wonderful life. It is not too late to start doing so. Some things take time to accomplish, so the sooner you start, the sooner you will get what you want. Wherever you are in life, you can transform your life and live a better life if you begin by creating and maintaining a strong, burning desire to do so.”

Your Primal Body: The Paleo Way to Living Lean, Fit, and Healthy at Any Age

Your Primal Body: The Paleo Way to Living Lean, Fit, and Healthy at Any Age

Your Primal Body is a book that will transform how you think about your body. Not just another fitness/weight-loss book, Your Primal Body shifts the paradigm for how to achieve a lean, muscular, vibrantly healthy body according to your genetic inheritance. This is the same body your Stone Age ancestors had, expressed through the human genome that evolved over a period of 2.6 million years. It’s the body you too can have when you learn how to follow ancestral dietary and activity habits in your 21st century life.Scientists studying the remains of early humans tell us how our ancestors were in far better shape than we modern humans, their bodies free of disease and painful conditions. Natural adaptation and selection occurred over millions of years when they lived in caves, hunted wild game, and foraged for plants and berries to survive—a way of life very different than ours today. But one thing has not changed: our DNA. The human genome has evolved so slowly that our genetic blueprint is almost exactly what it was 40,000 years ago when our ancestors still hunted and gathered their food. Lifestyles may have changed, but our modern bodies are no different in their basic DNA—a startling fact that revolutionizes how we think about and approach diet and exercise. The thesis of Your Primal Body is that we modern humans can follow the diet and activity patterns of our Paleolithic hunter-gatherer ancestors for optimal health and weight-loss. When you do eat and move as they did, you are healthier, more muscular, leaner, and pain-free; when you don’t, you run into trouble. The “diseases of civilization”—heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, arthritis, to name a few, are all linked by researchers who study health and longevity to sedentary lifestyles and eating habits. Eating highly processed food and performing minimal activity, you become susceptible to the health problems that plague our modern society—none of which our ancestors had.In this book, you will read the argument for switching to a more “primal” way of life and how it is scientifically valid, based in the latest research done by exercise physiologists, evolutionary fitness theorists, and scientists in university laboratories.Your Primal Body goes beyond theory and science to give you a practical plan for implementing primal fitness into your modern lifestyle. In Mikki Reilly''s 5 Step Primal Body Program, central to the book, she shares her 20 years of experience in training people from all walks of life about how to lose weight, become fit, stay healthy, and condition their body for athletics. Reilly''s clients span a range of ages, from 18 to 74, and the book includes their inspiring stories, along with their “before and after” pictures, placed throughout the text to illustrate the book''s points and instructions. Their stories are not fictional composites but actual words of people who got the results they wanted from “going primal,” telling exactly how they did it. The Primal Body approach is not a quick-fix, but a complete overhaul in habits that have been stopping people from taking advantage of their natural inheritance, a fit and healthy body for life.

How City Living May Be Harming Your Mental Health, And What You Can Do About It

City life can take a serious toll on your mental health. Research has shown that urban dwellers are more likely to suffer from chronic stress and mental illness, particularly depression.

But according to new research, the antidote to those city blues could be as simple as a walk in the park.

A Stanford University study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that walking in nature reduces rumination — the type of obsessive negative thinking and self-criticism that plays a central role in depression and anxiety disorders.

“Cities are known for higher levels of mental illness such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia,” study co-author Greg Bratman, a doctoral student at the university’s School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, told The Huffington Post in an email. “While the underlying causes are doubtless complex and multifaceted, our findings and those of others highlight the benefits of nature experience.”

Take a hike. For the study, the researchers asked 38 mostly healthy men and women to answer questions about their tendency to ruminate, and had them undergo brain scans measuring activity of a particular brain region that tends to light up during this type of thinking. Then, each participant went on a 90-minute walk in either a green space or an urban area.

After walking in nature, participants reported experiencing less rumination, and brain scans revealed less activity in brain regions associated with repetitive negative thinking. Walking through an urban areas, however, had no effect on rumination.

The findings suggest that spending time in nature may improve improve mental well-being by warding off stress and negative thinking.

“Nature experience may help ‘buffer’ against the stressors of urban life, and might thereby contribute to a lowered risk factor for the onset of depression,” Bratman said.

Sadness and the city. If you live in a fast-paced city, you don’t have move to the country or plan a camping trip to improve your well-being — spending time in your city’s parks can still be beneficial. A 2013 British study found that walking through urban green spaces can put the brain into a state of meditation.

By bringing more pockets of nature into cities — whether on rooftops, in empty lots or even along old railroad tracks — urban planners and policymakers can help improve the mental health of their inhabitants.

“City planners are starting to take account of mental health, in addition to all the other values of nature,” Bratman said. “It’s important to incorporate these ‘psychological ecosystem services’ into urban design, to help bring nature to the city, and to improve easy access to these landscapes and nature experience.”

It’s an issue that will only continue to become more pressing. Today, more than 50 percent of the world’s population lives in urban areas, and that number is only growing. By 2050, more than 70 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities, and many of those people will have little to no contact with nature, Bratman noted.

“We’re in a unique moment in human history,” he said. “Never before have so many people lived in cities, and never before have people been so disconnected from the natural world.”

How Living Apart Has Made My Spouse And Me Closer Than Ever

Nearly five miles into a Smoky Mountain hike, with family vacation nearing a close, we discussed the next time we would see each other. As we did, a rain-fed stream cascaded beneath the short, wooden footbridge on which we paused to admire butterflies swirling, dancing and darting in a half-dozen hues.

One year after my wife moved 800 miles east for a great opportunity with her long-time employer, we planned our next moments together. The butterflies’ delightful interaction drew some of our attention amidst the majestic mountain terrain and our discussion. Still, even with this distraction, we maintained focus on what really matters.

“I think we’ve spent more real time together in the past year than we had in many years,” Cathy proffered as we walked and planned. “Before, there was always tomorrow.”

During 27 years of marriage, we had long passed the point of taking each other for granted. It didn’t help that we worked opposite schedules for so many years — becoming almost alternating parents. Her nights and weekends in retail often came during the limited hours I wasn’t working or traveling for work. In the unusual hours when we were both together and electronically disconnected from any real or perceived work crisis, we focused on quality time with our children rather than with each other.

In the past year, we’ve made a conscious effort to change that focus. Every three to four weeks, we find somewhere to enjoy time together. Even when those gatherings include our adult children or others, we focus on each other in a way we seem to have missed for many years.

A hand to hold is more important when you know it won’t be there tomorrow. A hug is easier to treasure when the next one is three weeks away.

Looking back, it’s easy to see we didn’t put enough effort into our relationship. It’s also easy to find excuses. Workaholic behavior. Exhaustion from my untreated sleep apnea. Disagreements allowed to remain in roiling boil rather than confronted and settled directly. Treating compromise as lose-lose rather than win-win.

    Those excuses don’t matter now.

Time matters. Connection matters. Love matters.

During our first year of living apart, we’ve managed to strengthen our marriage; an outcome I wasn’t sure would happen when the year started. Increased flexibility and adaptability aided our strengthening.

A year ago, I would have laughed if you had predicted my wife would join me on a strenuous five-mile mountain hike, but she did just that in the Smokies. She would have also bet that at least one piece of the Ikea furniture I voluntarily spent three days assembling for her New York apartment would have collapsed by now. I’m no longer annoyed at losing time to her passion for judging figure skating, in part because she only does it on weekends I’m not around. She’s no longer annoyed to come home after a long day at work to find the house in greater disorder than when she left. When she comes home from work, her apartment is exactly as she left it.

It doesn’t mean it’s always easy to be apart. When three weeks stretches into four or more, I sometimes struggle to remain upbeat. On these occasions, I remind myself that at least some studies show “absence makes the heart grow fonder” to be more than a platitude. As our next time together approaches, marking one year apart, I can feel the validity in that phrase.

Butterflies kick in — swirling, dancing and darting in the range of hues I felt when we first met. One year apart but, perhaps, closer than ever.

My Husband Was Living in the Wrong Body

My husband has felt like he was living in the wrong body for as long as he can remember. As a little boy, he always wanted to be a girl. He wanted to wear girls’ clothes and have long hair that could be styled in curls and pinned back with pink plastic barrettes. He wanted to roll strawberry lip gloss onto his lips. He wanted to be pretty.

My husband mustered up the courage to share this innermost part of himself with me back in 1984, one year after we got married. As a young bride, I was confused and did not understand what was wrong with him. I was angry and hurt that he would have such desires. I hoped he wasn’t a sexual deviant. I wondered why being married to me and starting a new life wasn’t enough for him. I simply did not know about a condition known as gender dysphoria. My husband was at odds with his birth gender. At the time, we had no resources. There was no Internet to turn to. His secret had become ours, and we continued wrestling with his unexplained desire to dress as a woman, a need so great it was unstoppable.

Our marriage became one that had two stories. One story was the story of success shown to the outside world — the story that unfolds with two beautiful sons, accomplished careers, vacations, cars and the house on the hill. And then there is the other story, a private tale of confusion, hurt feelings and resentment. There are chapters of our marriage when my husband’s desire to cross-dress was too great not to act out on, followed by dark periods of depression for having to live a life that felt wrong; times when I was threatened as a wife by the woman inside of my husband; moments when I was angry at this inner woman that dwelled within him, and lashed out at him because I didn’t know how to get to her. We had a story that was kept private, unable to share with the outside world.

    2015-06-18-1434658725-6919970-ScreenShot20150618at4.16.13PM.png

After 25 years of marriage, our two stories had become blurry and it had become emotionally draining to keep the narratives defined. Our worlds were changing, and more information regarding gender dysphoria and transgender individuals had become available. I was able to understand better that there was nothing wrong with me, or with us. The only thing wrong was that my husband strongly felt he was a woman, and that fact was slowly destroying his spirit. The need to be a woman had become too great.

Together, we decided to rewrite our marriage and to live one true story. We agreed that my husband would transition fully into a woman. In the last three years, the husband that I married revolved into a woman with the use of hormones and surgery. It has been a whirlwind of couples therapy, legal papers and name changes. There have been many conversations with friends, coworkers and family members, both positive and negative. It has been a time of many changes.

My life as the wife of a transgender person is a roller coaster. There are many ups and downs, yet not once have I felt like I want to get off this ride. I am still in love with the person I married back in 1984. A person who today is a she. She has transitioned successfully into a woman both physically and emotionally. Most importantly, she is who she is today, and because of that, I have witnessed true joy in the person I’ve grown a life with — a person whose blue eyes shine because she feels right in her own skin.

Our story is still being written, and is far from over. This essay is just a blurb to the deeper story. There are more words to come. Words of how I feel as the wife. Words of love and acceptance as well as words of complicated grief while I stood by the person I married and wanted more than anything to have this story finish with a happy ending. Words I will write that will continue to tell our story, our one true story, for the world to see.

It could not have happened without the involvement of all levels of government. It could not have happened without the cooperation of the police and a compliant media. Only conspiracy bloggers reported the murders, and they weren’t believed at first. But as the body count rose through the summer, it became clear that more than one serial killer stalked the streets of Chicago, and for those willing to believe the impossible, it became obvious that thousands roamed after dark, culling the population and deliberately swelling their ranks. As order crumbles into chaos, unlikely heroes must rise to the challenge of saving civilization from a horrible end. Bertrand Allan, a tech support worker grieving the recent loss of his parents, joins with Joyce, a financial planner and part-time fitness instructor. Artist Susan Sweet Talks About Painting And Living In Rural Nova Scotia

Perhaps it was inevitable that I would eventually end up interviewing family – as I am not the lone artist in our bloodline. So, as a photography and arts blogger, it made sense to corner my aunt, painter Susan Sweet, and try to squeeze a little more than an artist statement out of her. Here is my attempt.

Michael Ernest Sweet: Why paint? I always ask this of painters and they usually don’t like the question, but too bad, I want to know?

Susan N. Sweet: I paint because I can’t stop. I will often do almost anything to avoid getting started, but then once the paint hits my brush, it is what I want to do and where I want to be. It is the form of art making I am most interested in. I look at everything and imagine how I might paint what I see. The more immersed I am in a painting, the more the world around me breaks down into colours and planes of light, and how I might describe them.

Michael: My grandmother (your mother) was a creative person in many ways, having operated a business, Lady Martock Fashions in Sleepwear, for a couple of decades after retiring from teaching. She both designed and made these often elaborate, almost Victorian, nightgowns. It wasn’t painting or photography, but she certainly was designing. Do you think she had any influence on your life as an artist?

Susan: My mother, Muriel, was the only art teacher I ever had in my first thirteen years of school. She taught art in the basement of Windsor Elementary, and was my teacher in Grade five. I think she was a bit hard on me as I was her child and she never wanted to appear biased. She was supportive of everything her children pursued and not that concerned with how much financial success we achieved, as long as we were happy and doing okay. I think that was her influence on my career in art making – just do what you want and try to be happy. Her true impact on my life, all our lives, as you know, is very hard to articulate.

Michael: Your maternal grandfather was also an artist. In fact, he was a wood carver of some note that depicted domesticated animals. Could some of your animal art be genetic, or is it simply a product of growing up in the Nova Scotia countryside?

Susan: Probably a bit of both. I did not know either of my grandfathers, both died long before any of us were born, but I was very familiar with his wood carvings, a very primitive style of Nova Scotia folk art. I like the idea of continuing the subject matter that was such a part of all of our lives.

Michael: Familiar indeed! One advantage to interviewing a relative is that I know some of the stories. For example, many of those wood carvings of your grandfather’s encountered some damage. Could you tell us about that and the ensuing irony?

Susan: That story featured prominently in my 2008 solo show “Broken Horses, Spotted Cattle”. When I was five and my brother, your dad, was four, our mother had gone back to teaching and left us with the housekeeper. I was not happy about that. So, I enlisted the help of my brother and we quietly went upstairs to the flat my grandmother lived in and got into her cabinet full of the wooden carvings and broke the legs and tails off of as many as we could. My mother was furious and, of course, wanted to punish us, but my grandmother, also a teacher, said no, they are just little children and they don’t know what they’ve done. Of course, I did know what I intended to do, and that was hurt my mother for leaving us to return to work, but what I didn’t know was the hurt I had caused my grandmother and how she understood my feelings. I still have many of the broken carvings. A few years after the incident we did attempt to repair them, but of course it was too late.

Michael: All of your animal paintings are exquisite. Many people tell me that you are able to capture the personality of their pets. When you paint horses I, personally, find something really magical about them. Do you think your relationship with real horses growing up helps you in your artistic work? Are you able to talk, or whisper, to horses?

Susan: No, I am not a horse “whisperer”. I do talk to horses, all of us horse people do that. For many years I breathed and lived horses. I do think my personal relationships with horses have helped me when drawing and painting them. Having grown up with horses and been around them daily for a very long time, one understands how they are built and how they move. There is a long history of equine art throughout the centuries, humankind has had an important relationship with horses that enabled our ancestors to travel, hunt, work the land, etc.

Michael: Indeed, we see beautiful examples of equine art from prehistoric times in the caves at Chauvet, for example. So, yes, we do seem to have been drawing them from the very beginning. You were recently commissioned to paint the official 250th anniversary commemorative painting for the Hants County Exhibition. My grandfather (your father, Ernest Sweet) was President of the exhibition for many years, including the 200th anniversary, how do you think he would feel about this if he were alive?

Susan: Oh, I think he would be delighted and quite pleased that I was approached to paint such a special commission. He loved Exhibition week. This fair is the oldest fair in North America and moved to its present location in 1951. My dad would have participated in livestock competitions beginning in the late 1930s, when the fair was held at the Fort Edward Hill in Windsor, Nova Scotia.

Michael: Grandad was an avid supporter of rural life and agriculture – having held other positions at The Atlantic Winter Fair and the NS Agriculture Association, for example. He also farmed (in some way) most every day for likely close to 70 years. What impact does this heritage have on your work?

Susan: I do find most of my subject matter comes from rural life. Horses, cattle, and the land, all figure prominently in what I paint. I am always interested in how we treat our domesticated animals, both the ones we eat and our companion animals. I feel very fortunate to live in a rural area where I am close to where our food is grown and where we are concerned with what happens on the land. Urban areas are so exotic to me! My father was an avid horseman. He worked the woods and the fields as a young man with horses, and his love of these things influenced me greatly. I also saw what happened to so many people as the family farms slowly disappeared. As my father slowly sold his own farming assets over the years, I became involved with horses and competing at the same fairs where he had shown his own cattle years before.

Michael: During your BFA, at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, you worked in painting and photography as well as printmaking. The photography stuck with you for some time afterward, and of course you still paint, but what about the printmaking?

Susan: Printmaking became just too hard after I left the open studio environment of university. I found both intaglio and lithography a fascinating form of art making, but technically overwhelming, and I don’t feel my work was all that memorable from my university years. I do still find myself drawn to prints, especially intaglio. Nova Scotia has some fabulous print makers thanks to the department run by Ed Porter and Bob Rogers at NSCAD University for many years.

Michael: I often marvel about the lifespans of so many artists (and photographers too) it seems (from my casual survey) that so many live such long lives. I think about Alex Colville, whom I knew, and how he worked into his nineties. Do you think there is something therapeutic or particularly healthy about a life as an artist?

Susan: Oh my goodness no! I do know of many older artists, in fact the gallery where I work summers represents a 92 year old who is still painting, but I am sure many other professions can offer up such individuals too. I often think there are so many toxic materials artists use in their work and that we are putting ourselves in danger! I don’t have a sense of calm when I paint. Painting for me is always a struggle and a challenge when it is being pulled from my heart. I find no relaxation in painting. I am focused though, and I can paint in public with no problem. It doesn’t bring me contentment though, not really. I am happy when I am painting, but it is the hardest thing in the world.

Michael: For a while you went in a direction that was a bit more commercial with your Animal Art business (earrings, brooches, ornaments, even small drawings of pets) but more recently you seem to have returned to fine art. What inspired this shift away from business woman, if you will, back to les beaux-arts?

Susan: I needed to say something in my work that could not be achieved through a commercial practice and taking a risk to paint what matters to me seems to be working. I also worked very small for many years and my body was rebelling against the ten hours of sitting every day. I still produce commercial portraits of animals for clients, but I follow my heart and luckily people do respond to my current body of work.

Michael: Often many artists reach a point in their career where teaching becomes an option – that is, schools seek you out. This can also be an important income supplement to support personal projects. Have you ever thought about teaching part-time, perhaps a class at your old alma mater?

Susan: I would be the worst teacher ever. I have conducted an occasional workshop, and those are fun. Many people in our family are teachers, and really good ones – I am not one of them.

Michael: Not only living in a more remote rural area, but also working in a home studio can become quite isolating, I would imagine. How have you dealt with this, perhaps more negative, aspect of the creative life?

Susan: It does mean that one must work very hard to be noticed. We’ve become reliant on the internet to communicate so much. I like living and working in a rural area, and even my rare excursions into civilization only involve small towns and cities. I think we sometimes miss the positive aspects of peer criticism working so isolated, but the area where I live has many other artists working in various media. I can also have my studio right in my home.

Michael: In the years when you and I both lived at the family home in Martock, we often fought like brother and sister, or cats and dogs. I think this has a lot to do with my obsessive compulsive tendencies and your “artistic” messiness, If I can express it this way. Oddly enough, we both ended up as artists, and would likely live under the same roof more easily now. Or would we?

Susan: Oh, we are much more mature now. Or at least I am! We would easily get along. I am still extremely messy though, be warned, that hasn’t changed. Come here anytime, there is lots of room to work!

Michael: I’d love to, believe me. New York City is wonderful, but it’s a very BIG kind of wonderful and sometimes I long for the quiet of the countryside. To finish up, tell me, who has influenced your work as an artist?

Susan: I admire the work of Rosa Bonheur. She could really paint a horse! Joe Fafard of Saskatchewan is fabulous. Mary Pratt of Newfoundland. Edward Hopper, David Hockney, Tom Thompson (and any of the group of seven) and Emily Carr. There are so many I admire, but in the end, I find I can only paint the way I do.

Photographer Carolyn L. Sherer Documents ‘Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South’

Carolyn L. Sherer began photographing lesbians and their families in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2011.

Still one year before President Barack Obama even announced his support for same-sex marriage, the risks for these queers in the south — which could (and still can) range from intimidation to physical violence — were high. In fact, many of the subjects chose not to reveal their faces in Sherer’s photos.

Now, “Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South” has become an important historical document that shows the public LGBT families exist and thrive in all parts of America — even its most conservative pockets.

The Huffington Post spoke with Sherer this week about the legacy of the project and what she was trying to accomplish by bringing visibility to these experiences. Check out photos from “Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South” along with Sherer’s interview below.

What was your overarching vision for this “Lesbians Living In The Deep South”?
In terms of content, my work is about authenticity and a search for common humanity in marginalized groups. I am interested in exploring issues of identity and always work in series to document individual stories to create a composite portrait of a community.

In this case, a specific incident inspired me to put a face on my previously invisible lesbian community in Birmingham, Alabama. When my friend was keeping vigil by her partner’s hospital deathbed, the brother of her beloved locked Kay out of their home. The police had to let her into the house to get a change of clothes to wear to the funeral. Worse, at the memorial service their close heterosexual friends said they did not know the couple was gay — or that gay people could be treated that way in Alabama. I realized that the distinctly southern “don’t’ ask, don’t tell” culture had to end.

    ilian andrienne
    Ileana and Adrienne

Conceptually, I fretted about how to make the work in a way that the participants could feel safe. I departed from my tradition of environmental portraits to make studio shots. Yes, the format provides the viewer the opportunity to focus on intimacy and relationships, but it was also a practical decision in terms of protecting participant privacy. It’s important to understand that this work was created in 2011 in a deeply conservative southern state. I did not know the potential for consequences, and at the time it felt quite risky to many of the women I approached. Each family decided to face the camera or not, and whether to include any children in the family. They were given complete control of their environment, choosing what to wear and how to stand. While being photographed, participants were asked to focus on their feelings about three words delivered in series: Lesbian, Pride and Prejudice.

Who are the individuals featured in these photographs?
40 lesbian families with diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds — all with roots in the Birmingham, Alabama area. The act of participation in most cases was a decision to come out of the closet — at least in more public circles.

It was my coming out story too.

    kay barbara

    kc diedra
    KC, Deidra and Christian-Taylor

Did these families have any hesitation or worries about taking part in this series?
Initially, yes, many of my friends refused to participate due to fear of consequences. After the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) agreed to show the work and I got public endorsements from the Birmingham Museum of Art and Southern Poverty Law Center, things loosened up considerably. The value of the early support of BCRI can’t be underestimated. Remarkably, this work was already on the walls in 2012 when President Obama and the NAACP endorsed gay marriage. It attracted nearly 17,000 visitors in a two-month run and prompted much private and public dialogue about who is entitled to equality.

    mary polly
    Mary and Polly

Why is visibility such as this important for LGBT people living in the south?
The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is hosting travel of “Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South” as part of its mission to advocate for human and civil rights. In spite of the fact that they live in the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, the LGBTQ community in Alabama lacks a single law protecting them from discrimination. People do still lose jobs and child custody because of their sexual or gender identity. I hope that individuals living in liberal areas of the country can remain aware of the implications of making equality a state’s rights issue.

I want the viewer to feel a quiet intimacy, and wonder about the reality of the lives of the people they see.

Any Resemblance To Persons Living Or Dead

It’s the end of a long day and, at last, you are in bed snuggling down with a book you hope will lull you into sleep. As you turn the pages you realise, with growing horror, that you are reading about yourself. Not only that, but this book is revealing things about you which you thought no one else knew. What a dreadful invasion of privacy that would be. I am ashamed to say it is an invasion I almost made on a dear friend of mine. Not quite, but very nearly. If I hadn’t sent her a copy to read first. And if a publisher had been interested in publishing it.

It was my first novel and I suspect, like many first novels, was a little too autobiographical for its own good. I had described an incident very close to one from my adolescence involving a friend. As I was fine-tuning and polishing I began to think that publication might be a possibility. And yet I hadn’t shown the book to my friend or indeed even told her I was writing it. If she read it I knew she would recognise herself. Why hadn’t I thought about it before? I suppose I was caught up in the process, single-minded about finishing, selfish, thoughtless — all attributes, or failings, considered useful if you want to be a writer. Once I had thought about it though, I sent it to her and waited. Nervous, anxious. I didn’t want to hurt or offend her. Thankfully I did neither and she gave me her blessing. And, as it turned out, no publisher was interested in publishing it anyway, but it got me thinking. There’s nothing like a bit of anxiety and shame to fuel creativity and so I came up with the idea for Disclaimer.

Hand on heart, Disclaimer is true to its title: any resemblance to persons living or dead is purely coincidental. There was no need to send out early copies to friends or family for approval. The events described in it are products of my imagination and I suspect that that is the difference between it succeeding in being published and my first novel being rejected.

It is complicated though, this notion of fiction. Writers become frustrated when readers assume their novels must, in some way, reflect their lives or the lives of people they know. I admit it irritates me. Writing fiction is the work of the imagination — that is what writers do — they make stuff up. Disclaimers are put in the front of books for good reason. But then… is it a little far-fetched to claim “any resemblance” and “purely coincidental”?. Most writers I know (and I include myself in this even given my past form) adhere to the belief that it is wrong to mine the lives of family and friends, but surely sometimes things can’t help but spill over? Even unintentionally? Rather than be irritated, perhaps writers should be flattered when readers ask them whether a character is based on them or someone they know: they should see it as an indication of the work’s authenticity. And yet it is hard not to see such questions as undermining creative endeavour. Is it really so hard to imagine that someone can make up a story that feels so real the reader thinks it must be based on actual events or people?

Perhaps this is why many writers are drawn to the work of Norwegian Karl Ove Knausgaard. He has grasped the nettle and, along with his family and friends, has flushed something else out into the open. Of course Knausgaard is not claiming his work is fiction, but his writing feels as if it comes from the same place, or at least, the place where good fiction should come from. Honesty, truth.

In the end of course, like a lot of things, it’s about balance and judgement. I heard a writer on a recent radio programme proclaim that he would never use family or friends in his work. He was evangelical in his outrage at the idea. There was a line and he would never cross it. I heard him loud and clear. I also heard the gentle chuckle of another writer on the same programme. He responded by saying that for him writing was like bicycling downhill without any brakes — exhilarating, scary — knowing that you, the writer, would probably arrive at the bottom safely, but that there might be a few casualties on the way down. And then he roared with laughter. He was being mischievous, deliberately provocative yes, but I believe the essence of what he said is true and given the choice, I know which of those two writers I would rather read.

Renée Knight is the author of the debut thriller Disclaimer (Harper, May 19, 2015).

Dr Seuss’ first book was rejected by 27 different publishers by age 33. He’s now one of the most popular children’s authors of all time. Vera Wang failed to make the U.S. Olympic figure-skating team and struggled as an editor at Vogue. She started designing wedding gowns at age 40 and went on to become a premier clothing designer in a multi-billion dollar industry. What would you do if you had no fears and nothing holding you back? There is life before winning the lottery. In order to live your dream life, you do not need to hold the winning ticket. One girl proved it. Ashlee Bratton turned her ‘someday’ bucket list into a real life challenge with a real life expiration date crossing off 29 of the 30 items on her 30×30 list. all before turning 30! If she can do it, so can you! Take a walk down the Failure Hall of Fame and follow the flops of those who have failed miserably and yet have soared into impossible success and risen beyond embarrassment and defeat. We all have those ‘someday’ dreams rolling around inside us. Call it a bucket list, call it a someday list, call it a life list (call it whatever you want). So much more than a bucket list, take the 30×30 challenge and learn to live beyond the bucket. Dreams weren’t meant to stay in your head. You can live your dreams. On Mother’s Day, Remembering Mothers Without Living Children

Mother’s Day evokes bittersweet emotions in bereaved mothers everywhere. The pain of loss may be especially poignant for mothers without living children. Memories of loss transposed onto a world awash in flowers and greeting cards leaves women reeling. Too often, their experience of motherhood is largely unacknowledged by society. Taking place in May, a month that pulses with such tremulous beauty in long-awaited spring, Mother’s Day can threaten to break the best of us.

Says Toni Brabec, whose only baby daughter Olivia died in 2013:

Before, I saw Mother’s Day like most people do. A special day to honor our mothers… [I]’d pick out cards, a small gift… Now on Mother’s Day, I would rather stay in or just have a small gathering… [F]or me, who has no evidence of children other than the photos in my house, I am overlooked and/or it is assumed I am not a mother at all… it is difficult because in my heart, I know I am a mother. But the world doesn’t always see it like that.

This is what loving family and friends can consider doing to help support mothers without living children coping with loss.

    1. Do acknowledge and affirm her standing as mother.
You can absolutely include bereaved mothers in Mother’s Day events. This may feel initially awkward, but it truly is both appropriate and helpful. The tone of inclusion may feel a bit more subdued, but the mother without living children should have her heroic struggle to mourn, remember, and find meaning marked. She will decline if she is not comfortable, but she will appreciate the invitation.

    2. Do send a card.
It is comforting to receive an acknowledgement in the mail regarding loss. These cards are evidence of the existence of babies gone too soon, and these apparently slight things carry precious love to shore up mothers mourning and remembering.

    3. Don’t try to talk her out of grief.
Resist the impulse to try to make her feel better. Instead, let her miss her child. Most expressions of grief that tow with them an undercurrent of the “at least,” will only inadvertently push the bereaved away.

    4. Do ask her questions about her loss/her birth/her stillbirth.
Depending upon your relationship to the bereaved, dialogue can be helpful. It promotes the integration of grief and complex healing. Loss, when processed, can reveal phenomenally painful truths about being alive. However, the other side of the pain is the recognition of the beauty that is also inherent in living. Bereaved mothers don’t take much for granted. They can teach a great deal in this regard.

    5. Do take care to acknowledge the loss of their baby.
If you see a Facebook post pertaining to loss, the mother is reaching out. Go ahead and comment — add your voice to the supportive community. You may not know what to say, but “I am thinking of you,” is a powerful statement.

Part of the isolation born of perinatal loss is the lack of shared memories. It is for this reason that efforts to invite the sharing of memories have great import. The bereaved mother is working to find her place in a whole new world. It is a lonely journey and she does appreciate the company.

The same is true of nutritional knowledge and how we can best supplement the holes in our traditional diet. Stress, too, use a factor that affects both our longevity and our happiness. This will also affect our youthful appearance in both our posture and our tendency to smile. This book brings the latest research into an entertaining and readable form. It was written by two former professors of health education. For those who follow the advice book but are still not happy with their faces and figures, plastic surgery is discussed as a possible doorway to the fountain of youth.

He Asked 1500+ Elders For Advice On Living And Loving. Here’s What They Told Him.

Karl Pillemer has spent the last several years systematically interviewing hundreds of older Americans to collect their lessons for living.

Pillemer admits he’s an advice junkie. He’s also a Ph.D. gerontologist at Cornell University.

Some years ago, after turning 50, he wondered whether there is something about getting older that teaches you how to live better. “Could we look at the oldest Americans as experts on how to live our lives?” he asked. “And could we tap that wisdom to help us make the most of our lifetimes?”

His first book, “30 Lessons for Living,” synthesized advice from over 1,000 elders on topics like happiness, work, and health.

Now Pillemer has followed up with “30 Lessons for Loving,” which features practical wisdom from over 700 older Americans with 25,000 collective years of marriage experience. One couple he profiles was married for 76 years. Another interviewee describes divorcing her husband, then remarrying him 64 years later.

I spoke with Pillemer for Sophia, a HuffPost project to collect life lessons from accomplished people that was partly inspired by his work.

Pillemer shared seven key pieces of advice he’s heard repeatedly from older Americans — about their greatest regrets, finding fulfillment, and keeping relationships healthy through life’s ups-and-downs.

    1. Stop worrying so much.

I asked these oldest Americans what they think people tend to regret at their age, and what they would advise younger people to do to avoid regrets.

I expected big-ticket items — an affair or a shady business deal, something along those lines. I really didn’t expect to hear the one answer that was among the most frequent and certainly among the most passionate and vehement: stop worrying so much.

One of the biggest regrets of the very old was, I wish I hadn’t spent so much time worrying. They weren’t talking about planning, but the kind of mindless rumination that all of us do over things we have no control.

One of the people who said that summed it up this way. It was a woman who said, “I knew there were going to be layoffs at my job. I did nothing over the coming three months except worry about being laid off. I poisoned my life. I didn’t think about anything else, even though I had no control over it.” And she paused and said, “I wish I had those three months back, because that was just lifetime lost.”

    sophia project

I’m sort of a chronic Woody Allen-esque worrier. Hearing hundreds and hundreds of older people saying that when you get to our age, you’ll see time spent needlessly worrying as time wasted, it really had a profound effect on me.

People have asked me, “What do you do with that insight? How do we stop worrying?” For me, when I start to get into the mindless rumination, I will remind myself that it’s an almost absolute certainty that everybody, when they get to the end of life, will say to themselves, “I wish I hadn’t spent so much time worrying about something that wasn’t going to happen.” After doing this for so long, I kind of have this feeling of a thousand grandparents in a room yelling at me [laughs].

A related insight of older people comes through very strongly in their advice about marriage. Very often a lot of their advice revolves around lightening up. We allow things, like marriage or other domains of life, to become extremely grim.

Their viewpoint from later on — this may sound like a cliché, but they mean it — is most of the things they worried about didn’t happen, and the bad things that happened to them were things they hadn’t considered.

    sophia project

    2. In relationships, sweat the small stuff.

If I learned one thing about how to keep the spark alive over many decades, there’s a point that the elders make that aligns very closely with research. It is an emphasis on thinking small — the small, minute-to-minute, day-to-day interactions that make up a relationship.

We tend to think of relationships globally. But all relationships are made up of hundreds or thousands of daily micro-interactions where you have the opportunity to be positive and supportive to your partner, or to be dismissive and uninterested.

There’s been research showing, for example, that how you respond if your partner interrupts you while you’re doing something is very diagnostic of how good the relationship’s going to be. If you’re actively involved in reading the paper or doing something, and your partner wants to show you something of interest to him or her, whether you respond dismissively or you briefly stop what you’re doing and engage with your partner is very diagnostic of positivity in the relationship.

    sophia project

Other research has shown that it takes around 10 positive interactions to make up for one nasty one, so the ratio of positive to negative small interactions in a relationship is really critical. And that’s exactly what older people say. Many of their lessons embody this same concept.

For example, one of the things that older people argue is that we ought to be polite in our relationships. You know, the old things that people learned in elementary school, to say please and thank you and observe normal civility, is something people forget to do all the time in their relationships, mostly because we feel comfortable.

They argue using politeness and tact, but also making a habit of positive things, of compliments, of small surprises, of doing a partner’s chore, if you have a fairly rigid division of labor. Many people described that. I had more than one woman — perhaps it’s quote from someone else — but they jokingly said that their husband doing the dishes was the best aphrodisiac they could think of. So I would say that for a good relationship that lasts a long time, one of the absolute keys is attending to being positive, cheerful, supportive in the small aspects of the relationship.

    sophia project

Another thing which is closely related: many couples begin to develop divergent interests and one partner then becomes hostile to a passionate interest. I had many older people say, “Our relationship changed when I gave my partner’s interests a chance and embraced them.”

One guy in his mid-80s, he was astonished. He said, “I started going to opera and ballet. Me! Opera and ballet! But it was worth it to engage with my partner.” Or wives who took up golf or developed an interest in football. At some point, people begin to say that positivity in the relationship is more important than fighting over these kinds of like minor differences.

People who have very positive relationships consciously tend to maximize these small positive interactions. And that is a place where elder wisdom completely or very closely aligns with what we know from research about good marriages.

    3. Don’t sacrifice your relationship for your children.

There’s a very strong research finding in family social science. It is called the U-shaped curve of marital happiness. Basically, marriages start out pretty happy. Marital happiness drops precipitously at the birth of the first child and usually never completely recovers until the last child has left the house.

So even though kids are great — they satisfy our existential longings, and we love them, and it’s one of the most profound experiences — they are stressful for marriages. You probably don’t need a social scientist to tell you that, because anybody who’s been through it knows that.

There’s no question that a lot of marital arguments and difficulties revolve around children. It’s one of the paradoxes of marriage that good things, like having kids or having a really good job, even owning and taking care of a house, also can be sources of marital stress. It’s the double-edged sword of marriage.

The elders had one really strong recommendation in terms of adjusting to kids. Put your marriage first, put your relationship first, and don’t let kids distract you from having a good relationship with your partner.

Couples lose themselves in the mix of kids and work and fundamentally abandon attention to their relationship. The advice of the oldest Americans is very similar to that famous instruction on airplanes — put your own oxygen mask on first and then put it on the kids. If you aren’t attending to your relationship, you aren’t going to be very effective as child-rearers.

It’s very unusual that people have an awful relationship and wind up being good parents. If you sacrifice your relationship for your children, you have a reasonable chance of losing both.

    sophia project

Now, they aren’t saying, of course, that you don’t love your kids and that you wouldn’t hurl yourself in front of a train to save them. But they argue that a marital relationship needs constant attention in spite of the kids.

I was shocked, in focus groups I did in preparation for the book, how many young parents couldn’t even remember when they’d gone out on their own or spent much individual time together. The oldest Americans’ argument is: Carve it out. Impose on grandparents. Develop a babysitting exchange. Even if you don’t have any money.

I had people who grew up in the Depression. One couple said, “We returned our disposable soda bottles and went to McDonald’s. It was just an opportunity to be away.”

Even if it’s something as artificial as a weekly date night where you scrimp and arrange for babysitting and go off on your own, you simply must do it. If you lose yourself in this middle-aged blur of work and kids, you really won’t do your kids any good.

    sophia project

    4. People who share core values typically have better marriages.

One hallmark of these long and harmonious marriages — and this is a piece of advice, too, that older people explicitly give — is to marry someone a lot like you.

We have in our popular culture this vast amount of examples of where opposites attract and make for great relationships, from “Romeo and Juliet” through “The Little Mermaid” through “Pretty Woman” and on and on.

Both the elders and research say, not so much. Marrying somebody who is very similar to you — in the trade, we call it homophily. Homophilous marriages, where the partners are pretty similar across a range of domains, tend to last longer and be happier.

What seems to really make the difference are core shared values. For example, work and the importance of work, the number of children and the way children are to be raised and goals for children, how important money is, spiritual and religious values to some extent. If there’s core value similarity, that seems to really make for these longer and happier marriages.

There’s no magic bullet. But marrying someone who’s fundamentally similar to you, especially in outlook, worldview, and values, really does seem to make a difference. It makes everything else much easier.

You might ask, in our complex multicultural society, is that really a good thing to recommend? What they would say is, you can have differences. Sometimes differences do spice up a relationship. But if you have two people who are, for example, strongly committed to two different religious traditions, you’ve got to be aware that you’re going to have to work around that in your relationship. If you have other kinds of strong value differences, it’s important to be aware of those and deal with them.

    sophia project

    5. Communicate early, communicate often.

I’ve spent a lot of time interviewing young people. Of course, I’m speaking anecdotally. I know a lot of them as a college professor. One thing I’ve learned is that even in long dating relationships, it’s actually relatively unusual that they have a deep discussion about child-rearing values or even having children.

I think that’s a problem. I think the elders would say it’s a problem. Understanding how your values align is very important early on.

This is related, and it may seem obvious, but virtually all of the elders in long marriages say the key to their success was learning how to communicate effectively on important issues.

People who were divorced very typically attribute it to a communication breakdown. I had several couples in the study who had gotten divorced and then remarried. One couple was actually remarried almost a half century after they were first divorced and began to have a very positive relationship. Almost always that was attributed to learning how to open up, to have open and successful communication and to really talk to one another.

    6. Approach marriage as a discipline.

The unspoken, unquestioned, and underlying assumption, especially of people 75 and older, was that marriage would last forever.

They viewed marriage as an unbreakable bond; they simply had to work within those parameters. That means, for example, you live through rough patches and don’t just try to get out of the relationship. You come to accommodations and acceptances of the other person. You see this unit as something that is bigger than two people and their immediate individual satisfaction.

When they got married, they were making a commitment to the concept of marriage as a worthwhile institution, rather than the partnership based on immediate satisfaction of the individuals involved.

I got from them the idea of marriage as a discipline — not a punishment kind of discipline but the way it’s used if you’re learning music or a martial art. Marriage is a lifelong path, one that you never perfect and that you continually work to get better at. You’re continually working to improve communication and overcome problems and establish more interest.

This worldview — that once you were in marriage, you were in it for good — shaped people’s day-to-day experience and view of it. It’s one of the things which those who do articulate it recommend to younger people. They say, even if the reality is that you may not stay married, you ought to have this attitude, because it will make you work harder to get through difficult times. And there are such benefits to doing that that you ought to do it.

    sophia project

    7. Take time to craft the story of your life.

There’s been considerable research on the importance of reminiscence, life review. Most old people would like to be able to see their lives as a meaningful whole, to be able to sum it up into a coherent narrative.

I don’t want to wax too poetic, but I have really been struck by something which the famous psychologist Erik Erikson said. At some point you realize that you’re given this one chance — he words it this way — ‘this one chance in all of eternity to enact an identity and to play it out in the real world.’

Towards the end of life, what’s really important to people is to be able to see how their life mattered, how it was meaningful, how there was a story to it that wraps up in a good way.

People who are able to create that kind of narrative, and think of their life in that way, are typically happier. They’re more generative. They’re much more serene and open to the end of life. So that is really good work for people to do. Writing about it is something that a number of my interviewees did. Often my best interviewees were people who had done some writing of memoirs.

There is a concept which some of them also did, it’s called the “ethical will,” where people will write down what they would like to leave to younger generations about their values and principles and morality, how someone should live a life.

    sophia project

It’s so critical for older people to record their memories. I would go one step further. Stop me if — actually, I’m going to go ahead and say it. We’re in the midst right now in our society of a very dangerous experiment. That’s one where young people, outside of intermittent contacts in their own family, have no meaningful contact with older people in any other dimension of their lives.

Whereas old people were often much more integrated and were sought out as sources of wisdom and advice and life experience, now they really aren’t, because our society is so age-segregated.

I think that we place young people in peril without these kind of intergenerational contacts. This is something that’s so natural for the human race. It’s really only been about the last hundred years that people have gone to anyone other than the oldest person they knew for advice about something, say like marriage or child-rearing.

Even though it sounds artificial, it’s important for older people to record their own thoughts and memories, but it’s really critical for younger people to ask them for them, and not just for stories, but for guidance and practical advice for living. I’m not against professional help. I think it’s great. But sometimes people might go and ask the elders in their lives for advice on finding a meaningful career or improving a relationship first.

So I think that it’s both older people doing it themselves, nurturing these memories and reflecting on their lives, but it’s also our role as younger people to help them to do it, to express interest in it and be a part of their reminiscing and summing up their life into a meaningful story. That’s what we really risk losing now. It’s a large reason for these projects, I have to say, and why I’m writing these books.

The Living We Do While We’re Dying

I can’t stop thinking about the fact that I’m dying.

    You are, too, you know.

    That’s not drama — that’s fact.

From the moment we arrived here, we began the process of dying. And because I’m a person, I’ve become quite competent at pushing that truth away. I have plenty of time to make an impact. My kids love me, and everyone says that’s the thing they’ll remember most. Don’t worry — ‘It’ won’t happen to you.

You can see how trite those thoughts are, can’t you? How flat the clichés fall? I’ve become increasingly wary of my default being I’ll do it eventually. When is eventually? Why is tragedy so often the impetus that moves us to action, instead of recognition of our desire to live more fully?

At 1:00 this morning, I couldn’t sleep. I was heaving with tears, and being near my children was the only thing I could think to do to ease my sadness. I crawled into bed with my daughter. I put my head to her feet, crawled under her warm, purple blanket. As we settled seamlessly into each other, the pillow under my head became damp, tears collecting, hot and fast.

Because here’s what I know: I am a good mother. I know this is true. My kids love me like all children love their mothers, no matter what. Which is precisely the thing that had me in tears: My kids will love me even if I don’t earn it.

And I don’t always earn it. Sometimes, I talk to my kids in ways that I talk to no one else on Earth. I yell. I scold. I breathe deep out-breaths of annoyance, frustration and please-just-hurry-up. I often show more focus and determination in my marriage — on speaking kindly and with love and purpose to my husband — than I do in showing my children those same courtesies.

The sadness, it was born right there, in the shame of that truth.

It’s up to me and my husband to make sure our children know that they are treasured. Not that they are survived each day, or “put up with.” It is our job as their parents to buoy their spirits with a sense of certain worth and deep, noble love.

The kind of love they’ll never be able to shake.

My tears came from the knowing that I don’t give them that kind of love as often as I want. From the knowing that, as people living human-on-Earth experiences, I am dying and they are dying and what do I want these dying days of this gorgeous, possible life to feel like?

I want less “no.” I want more laughter. I want less rushing and I want more intention. I want to work together. I want to hear the things they think about. I want to know who my children are, as much as we can know such things.

I want less, “You won’t get ketchup with your dinner if…” and “There will be a consequence in 1… 2…” I want to trust that they’ll make the right decisions and want to do the right thing if I believe that they will, all the way.

I want robust love, burning love, oozing-dripping-glistening love. I want to see it leaking out of them. Because what are we here, living for, if not to give the kind of sure, vast love that won’t die when we do?

My husband’s arm was tight around me, his body warm against mine, when I crawled away from him and into my daughter’s bed. I didn’t have enough room. I was awkwardly covered by blanket.

I put my hand on her ankle and fell asleep almost instantly.

Pretending that this will go on forever, or that somehow, magically, enough of the mistakes will be righted in the end?

I want them righted in life.

I want them righted right now. Because right now is all there is.

And that is not some New Age jargon.

    That is the truth.

I can’t give my love and focus, my determination and clarity to my husband and my work and assume that my kids will be fine. Because while they will be fine — of course they’ll be fine — I don’t want them to be fine.

    I want them to thrive.

I want them to thrive like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

I want really see what love can do.

I want to know that the best work I’ve ever done, I did in the hearts and the minds and the bodies of the two people that came from mine.

If I can’t get it right there, the rest is more inconsequential than I’d like to admit.

The living I do while I’m dying? I want to make it sparkle.

I want to make it last.

    The Act of Truly Living

The most beautiful moments in life come from taking risks, making every breath count, and choosing to live. I mean truly live. To be present in every moment. To feel: love, pain, heartache, joy, gratitude. To feel: everything.

As I stare into the candles that cast a beautiful glow upon my cake, I think about what they really mean. As I take a moment and look around at the people I love next to me, I can’t help but wish to stop time for just a moment: to imprint the feeling of this very moment forever into my memory. I look back at the candles flickering on the cake and and am weighed by the meaning of this birthday and all it represents. Meaning for the past, the present, and the future. It represents life and every moment I’ve been so graciously given, and every moment I have yet to be gifted.

    Endless Hope
For a moment I didn’t want to blow out the candles. I wanted to bask in the glow of their hope and the gracious gift that I had been given yet another birthday. I just wanted to exist and be thankful for being allowed this very moment, for all the people in my life, and how completely beautiful it all was. But I knew that taking in that breath and blowing out those candles also represented another day Cystic Fibrosis had not won. It represented the beauty of tomorrow, my next birthday, and the hope that can never be extinguished.

It would be an understatement to say that I have been overwhelmed with emotion these past few weeks: assaulted beyond recognition by cystic fibrosis and the toll it has taken on all our lives. The fragility of life, the incredible love, generosity, and support of so many amazing people, the realities of CF, decisions about the future, and such immeasurable goodness amidst uncertainty have all sent endless tears streaming down my cheeks. These past few weeks have proven themselves to be stronger than my ability to contain my emotions: leaving me to feel every moment, relive every memory, and whole-heartedly give thanks for the beauty and people life has given me. I have been gifted beyond measure with such beauty and goodness.

The candles on my cake represent the life I have lived and the life I have yet to live: all a beautiful gift. They are all filled with immense hope and goodness. Each day I am stronger, more grateful, and filled with more love. This will be a birthday that will live with me always.

    2014-12-24-IMG_20141217_141643.jpg

Here is to a beautiful year 28. I promise to live in each moment, be present in every beautiful breath gifted to me, and be grateful for it all. I will truly live.

Are you living? I mean truly living?

    Living the Hiplife

Hiplife is a popular music genre in Ghana that mixes hip-hop beatmaking and rap with highlife music, proverbial speech, and Akan storytelling. In the 1990s, young Ghanaian musicians were drawn to hip-hop’s dual ethos of black masculine empowerment and capitalist success. They made their underground sound mainstream by infusing carefree bravado with traditional respectful oratory and familiar Ghanaian rhythms. Living the Hiplife is an ethnographic account of hiplife in Ghana and its diaspora, based on extensive research among artists and audiences in Accra, Ghana’s capital city; New York; and London. Jesse Weaver Shipley examines the production, consumption, and circulation of hiplife music, culture, and fashion in relation to broader cultural and political shifts in neoliberalizing Ghana. Shipley shows how young hiplife musicians produce and transform different kinds of value-aesthetic, moral, linguistic, economic-using music to gain social status and wealth, and to become respectable public figures. In this entrepreneurial age, youth use celebrity as a form of currency, aligning music-making with self-making and aesthetic pleasure with business success. Registering both the globalization of electronic, digital media and the changing nature of African diasporic relations to Africa, hiplife links collective Pan-Africanist visions with individualist aspiration, highlighting the potential and limits of social mobility for African youth. The author has also directed a film entitled Living the Hiplife and with two DJs produced mixtapes that feature the music in the book available for free download.

    Mephistopheles in Your Living Room

When I mention to non-aficionado friends that I’ve been to the opera–most recently, to San Francisco Opera‘s wondrous Norma, by Vincenzo Bellini, with the dazzling, “once-in-a-generation” soprano Sondra Radvanovsky–they rarely say, “Oh, I don’t like opera.” More often, it’s “Ooh, opera is so expensive.” Well, yes and no. There are certainly other ways to see a production than paying for an orchestra seat.

You can buy a cheaper seat or a standing-room ticket; in San Francisco, you can even see a simulcast at the ballpark! Sometimes you can catch an HD-filmed production at a movie house that has good sound, like my little neighborhood theater, the Lark. Occasionally, you can watch a filmed production on TV; for instance, San Francisco public television station KQED recently showed Arrigo Boito‘s 1875 opera Mephistopheles (Mefistofele), filmed and recorded last fall, when I saw it at the War Memorial Opera House. And now, you can see this production on Blu-Ray and DVD.

If you’ve never seen an opera, this is an excellent way to begin: stretched out in a comfy chair in your living instead of sitting upright with a hard-back seat in front of you; table with popcorn and beer (or cheese, fresh sourdough, and wine, or whatever) at hand. Plus, you can stand up when it’s not intermission.

Mefistofele is San Francisco Opera’s fourth DVD/Blu-ray release, after productions of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s Moby-Dick, Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia, and the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. I was lucky enough to see all of them.

With Mefistofele, I was waiting for my photographer friend Tracy Johnston to meet me for a Sunday matinee. It was a fine, sunny day, and Tracy was going to join me after taking pictures at the Folsom Street Fair, an annual, perhaps only-in-San-Francisco celebration. As the organizers described last year’s event, “Dressed in leather harnesses, or galloping with Edwardian carriages and the most fabulous of horses, or in latex and rubber, or in sequins, beads, and feathers, or swinging suspended on hooks, or dancing in the cage, or with the skimpiest of outfits, or with nothing at all, we came together.”

I happened to mention Tracy’s plans to someone and laughed, saying, “So she’s going to experience the widest range of what San Francisco has to offer today.”

The woman arched an eyebrow and said to me, “Have you seen this opera?”

Now that I have, I totally get what she meant. With different costumes, Folsom Street Fairgoers could have populated the opera’s ribald town carnival, complete with a frisky Adam and Eve and serpent, in the first act and the wicked Witches Sabbath, with its well-simulated nudity, in the second. They could have, that is, providing they could sing. In what must have been one of its most fun experiences ever, the stellar San Francisco Opera Chorus, led by Ian Robertson, sang and performed as both the colorfully clad townspeople and the witches and warlocks of Walpurgis Night. Masked and costumed in white, they also sang in the angelic choir that bookends this drama about Devil versus God, heaven versus hell. They were simply outstanding.

The terrific Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov was devilishly charismatic as the title character, and Mexico-born tenor Ramón Vargas a sweet-voiced Faust, the scholar who bargains away a peaceful afterlife to experience the true nature of this life. The dynamic soprano Patricia Racette was Margherita, the village girl Faust seduces and destroys; and her solo as, half mad with grief and remorse, she awaits execution for killing her mother and the baby Faust left her with is heart-stopping.

I would have liked Boito, who wrote the libretto as well as the music, to have dropped the tacked-on Act IV, in which Faust, traveling on Mephistopheles’ magic cape to classical Greece, meets up with Helen of Troy. This gives him a chance to contrast loving a mortal (a tragedy) with loving a goddess (an illusion), but I would rather he had enlarged a bit Faust’s truncated relationship with Margherita. I know, it’s opera; but still.

Then again, it was fortunate Margherita has only two scenes. That summer, while Racette and company were rehearsing Mefistophele, mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick, who was set to star in a world premiere based on Stephen King’s 1992 novel Dolores Claiborne (an SFO commission from Tobias Picker), had to withdraw from the production. This was in late August, and Racette learned the new part in time for opening night, September 6. As she said at the time, “The only breaks I’ve had are my performances of Mephistopheles.”

That was just one reason Racette received a San Francisco Opera medal–awarded from time to time to great performers, conductors, and others who have been important to the company–last month. This was at the end of a performance of Susannah, composed and with libretto by Carlisle Floyd, in which a Tennessee town’s small-mindedness affects a young girl, her brother, and the preacher who ruins all their lives. It’s a highly accessible, emotionally engaging, powerful work, and here’s hoping SFO brings it back again soon. Not to mention Norma (preferably with Radvanovsky), which pretty much knocked out everyone who saw it.

Meantime, there’s Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera and Handel’s Partenope this month, followed by Puccini’s Tosca and Rossini’s Cinderella. And don’t forget the DVDs of Mefistophele and the others I mentioned. In fact, Vargas, who is here performing in Un Ballo in Maschera with Dolora Zajick, will be signing DVDs and CDs after the Oct. 19 performance.

Pope Francis Marries 20 Couples, Including Some ‘Living In Sin’

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Forty “I do’s” — or “Si” in Italian — were pronounced in St. Peter’s Basilica Sunday as Pope Francis married 20 couples, with one bride already a mother.

Francis in his homily likened families to the “bricks that build society.” Among the couples, all from the Rome area, is one in which the groom’s first marriage was annulled by the church and the bride has a daughter from an earlier relationship. Some of the other couples already were living together.

The Vatican views sex outside marriage as sin, but Francis stresses the church should be a forgiving one.

He said marriage was “real life, not some TV show.” He told the couples love of Jesus can help whenever their love “becomes lost, wounded or worn out.”

Many rank-and-file Catholics have pressed the Vatican to allow divorced faithful who remarry to receive Communion. The Vatican has stood firm, contending only if remarried Catholics forsake sex can they receive Communion. Catholics can only remarry in the Church if their first marriage is annulled, essentially a declaration the initial union never existed.

Some hope a major Vatican meeting next month on family concerns might lead to permission for divorced Catholics who remarry to receive Communion. Francis has reportedly told a woman in his Argentine homeland whose husband’s first marriage wasn’t annulled she was free of sin and should take Communion anyway. The Vatican quickly clarified that the pope’s private conversations don’t reflect church policy.

Sunday’s weddings performed by Francis could also be seen by status-quo defenders as the Vatican’s way of stressing that marriage, because it is a sacrament, should endure. One by one, the 20 couples were called by name by Francis, who asked if they’d be faithful for the rest of their lives.

Urban Living and the Necessity of the Arts

American cities are thriving in ways unimaginable a generation ago. Once the places people wanted to flee, cities are now where more and more families and individuals want to live, work and play. Interesting architecture, historic brownstones, shorter commutes between work and home, all serve to increase the allure of city living between Live-Work-Play.

Often overlooked though in city development is the need to foster vibrant arts opportunities for our residents. In coping with many of the issues we face, urban mayors spend much time focusing on the live and work part of growing their cities, but the play portion is similarly important, especially when it comes to the arts.

That’s why in Jersey City we are committing public dollars with ample support from area developers to complete renovation of a grand 3000-seat theater and provide residents with a world class arts venue. Built as one of five Loew’s Wonder Theatres in the 1920s, this venue has regional potential beyond the city. By bringing in two companies – one, a leading design firm to rebuild the theater to its former grandeur and the second, one of the world’s largest concert promoters to book popular entertainers, we are helping complete the live, work, play equation in Jersey City. We have also emphasized the need for local arts programming for the young and older alike and a local university will be managing this end of the theater. Once re-opened, the Loew’s will serve its neighborhood, the city at large, and the region as well.

New York City’s great mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia, believed that art was a concern of government and should provide as many opportunities as possible for all city residents, especially those less well-off, to experience the joy of taking in concerts, shows and exhibits. Of course, he was right, though in tough budgetary times this emphasis has too often been lost.

Not only will the newly renovated Loew’s spur further development in the neighborhood, but just as important, it also will serve as an arts hub focused on broad community programming for the entire city, one of the most diverse in the nation.

As American cities enjoy a renaissance, spending on arts must not be overlooked. No doubt, it can be hard to justify when public safety and education demand increasing public investment. But without attention being paid to the arts, cities will suffer in the long run.

5 Lessons from New Motherhood on Living the Good Life

I wouldn’t call my pre-baby outlook on life misguided, but like most 20-, er, 30-something-year-old professionals (especially those here in New York), the concept of work-life balance was far-fetched, to say the least. Perhaps I was looking too far away — like France or back to my grandparents’ generation — for a practical way to apply the concept to my own life. Or maybe there was some truth to the notion that the “good life,” was only attainable by certain groups of folks. Or, maybe, I just hadn’t become a mother yet.

Who knew that the thing everyone says is supposed to turn your world upside down would actually shift it into balance. Granted, you might not be able to tell — well, with my home consistently towing the line between new parenthood and an episode of “Hoarders” — but where my husband and I may lack in magazine-worthy digs, we’re making up for it in lessons learned about truly living the good life.

Here are five that we’ve gleaned so far… in no particular order:

    1. Savor Every Sip (…Or Bite…Or Moment, For That Matter)
This isn’t one of those things experienced parents say in rosy-hued retrospect, it’s the lesson I learned on Valentine’s Day 2014, one of our first night’s out with baby, which ended with a change of clothes in a gross public men’s room and a sleepy child with shoes on her hands. As for the cocktail shown here? I drank it…alone…before hurrying past judgmental restaurant patrons and dumping its boozy byproducts down the drain so baby could eat.

    2. Make Nice With Mother Nature (Or, Better Yet, Invite Her In)
Winter 2014 sent many of us reeling into hibernation, a place that I previously imagined cozying into with my new baby until Spring arrived. But let’s face it, there are only so many gingerbread lattes you can drink, and two weeks in, I was over it. Plant life isn’t anymore entertaining than a sleepy newborn is, but if I were to go back in time, I’d stop waiting for Mother Nature to have some compassion and bring in some natural elements — like this herb garden — instead.

    3. Invest In Good Bedding
Somewhere, someone’s living the good life off the profits of all the baby gear we’re practically buried under. But as most new parents learn, no matter how cool the gadget or how soft the blankie, nothing compares to our lap, in our bed, when it comes to nap time.

    4. Make The Most Of The Mundane
My first day alone without baby wasn’t as glamourous as I’d imagined. It involved a trip to the doctor, a wait in line at the post office, and a lonely, mommy-guilt-ridden lunch at Panera Bread. But in the spirit of making the most of my “free time,” I swung by the hair salon for a treatment, where I spotted this little oasis of grown-folk goodness. I’m sure it’ll be a choking hazard and otherwise impractical at some point, but for now, I say yes to any little luxury that will help our apartment-sized playpen feel like a home again.

    5. Life Is Better When You Can Unplug
So maybe I did learn something from the French after all, and every time my daughter whines at the sight of my cell phone or laptop, and even more so when she smiles at me, I’m reminded of this fact.

Living and Breathing Gabriel García Márquez

    2014-04-22-Erendira3.jpg

I met Gabriel García Márquez 30 years ago.

By 1984 I had read many of the novels the Colombian writer had published until then.

The year before, the theater group Comunidad de Lima had assigned me to adapt the tale The Incredible and Sad Story of Candida Eréndira and Her Heartless Grandmother.

It was a simple and exquisite novel, full of contradictory adjectives and out-of-this-world scenes that made my imagination fly farther than it had ever flown.

To get to know Eréndira, the grandmother, the swamps of the past, the Amadises and the wind of misfortune, I had to meet García Márquez. I spent months in libraries researching and reading as many magic realism books as I could find.

I moved to Macondo. I met the Colonel, the patriarch, the Big Mama, the castaway, the blue dog, the foretold death. I spoke with the handsomest drowned man, the ghost ship and Blackaman. I found part of the screenplay version of Eréndira in a Cuban magazine. I just looked at it but did not read it.

I wanted to write my own adaptation.

The biggest challenge for Eréndira was not only to pay her grandmother the debt of 872,315 pesos. For me, it was to convince the audience that the images and texts do justice to the beauty of the García Márquez prose. How could I put into context the time and space without being obvious, keeping the magic without being descriptive?

The grandmother and granddaughter were sound characters, with irreplaceable dialogues. It lacked a common thread to become an effective translation into theater, and the photographer character, assumed that role who, like a Greek chorus, led us through the Colombian desert.

Still, images of ostriches, thirsty graves, luminous and flying stingrays, nuns with tuberculosis, oranges with diamonds, needed to preserve the disbelief and the exaggeration to the point of admiration.

How to do justice to such imagination?

We just had to look around. We lived in Latin America, in countries with intersecting stories, military coups, disappearing people, fraudulent elections, absurd rituals and ossified customs.

We decided then to incorporate original songs to the play, trying to keep a light environment within the depth of the abuse, oppression, contrivance, the nerve and madness of the grandmother.

When writing his novels and short stories, García Márquez was inspired by his own life and the people who crossed his path. We did the same, digging into our own local realities.

The first and second acts were ready. The third was the only one still in progress. One night, at the end of a group discussion, the director of the play Carlos Padilla Pardo said: “I think Elio could play the role of the grandma.”

You can imagine my surprise. A man playing the grandmother in a conservative society? Besides, I was not sure I could do justice to that role.

At that time, Peru was experiencing an inflation that would become rampant, scarcity — I remember how precious sugar was — terrorist bombings, constant blackouts and political disorder.

To Padilla, the grandmother was a man: a dictator, abusive and oppressive, disguised as a woman, who in order to convince and reach her goals would use the unscrupulous wiles of a sneaky female. She was the sum of defects of both genders, made up with musk, dressed in satin and perfumed with the yellow roses García Márquez admired.

I already knew the character but the challenge was not to turn it into a cartoon.

I accepted the challenge. I had nightmares of violent fires, melancholic fevers and windy nights with hungry moths that served to calm the storms of that challenge.

The grandmother was a white, huge whale. I had to age 50 years and put on 100 pounds. I had to experience delusions, refine my voice and shave my beard, which at that time was black.

There was nothing that two silver wigs, makeup, and jewelry could not achieve. A super-sized body, with flabby and lopsided breasts, opulent buttocks and a Botero-like belly completed the facade, along with three colorful cotton, taffeta and lace dresses, and square-heel boots that made me reach 6’2″ height.

The conversion would take me two hours every night.

The set design was masterful: Two truckloads of sand in the center of the seating. The stage got covered with XIX century adobe bricks we got from a demolished building. The enormous grandma’s house with painted backdrops, which were destroyed during the fire every night. The fire was real.

It was a real marvelous mise-en-scène. It was our best way to pay García Márquez tribute.

The season lasted three months, four shows per week. For the last show, more than 50 people were left outside in the middle of the damp and cold Lima winter. We extended the season for an additional month.

Gabo made us acknowledge Latin America, this magic and wonderful land where a blind person gets his sight back, someone without legs runs a marathon and a whore ends up being canonized.

Thirty years ago I lived García Márquez. Maybe I need 70 more years to get to know the solitude.

How To Stop Waiting and Start Living

In this video, Eckhart Tolle explains that “Presence,” is a state of consciousness. Many of us spend our lives waiting… for the next moment, because we believe the next moment will be better than the present moment. When we are waiting for the next moment, we miss the present moment. Since life only happens Now, we end up waiting for an illusive something that never arrives.
