If Made in America Isn’t on the ‘Rocky’ Steps, It’s Not Happening in Philadelphia, Jay-Z Rep Says

The controversy between Jay-Z’s Made in America festival and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney’s office stepped up another notch Thursday: Desiree Perez, COO of Jay’s Roc Nation company, tells Variety that the festival, which has taken place on the city’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway every year since 2012, will be held in that iconic location in 2019, […]

Fortnite Has Reportedly Made over $1 Billion from In-Game Purchases

At this point, it’s essentially common knowledge that Fortnite is an outrageously successful video game. But market research firm SuperData Research has now put another quantitative measure on just how successful Fortnite is.

A new SuperData report (via GamesIndustry.biz) shows that Fortnite has made more than $ 1 billion off in-game purchases alone. The report also claimed Fortnite is only growing in popularity overall, with an upward trend since October 2017 that saw a huge spike in February that only started slowing in May while still continuing upwards. That slowed May growth was still good enough for a whopping $ 318 million in revenue.

Morgan Freeman Made a Lewd Comment to Me on a Red Carpet — Here’s Why I’m Speaking Out

Editor’s note: Maggie Parker is an entertainment journalist and a frequent contributor to PEOPLE. In the wake of sexual harassment allegations against Morgan Freeman reported by CNN, she decided to share her story of a red carpet encounter with the actor. In a statement on May 24, Freeman, 80, responded to the CNN report: “Anyone who knows me or has worked with me knows I am not someone who would intentionally offend or knowingly make anyone feel uneasy. I apologize to anyone who felt uncomfortable or disrespected — that was never my intent.”

Who would dare to go up against God? Sixteen people, actually. And I’m going to be No. 17.

CNN released a story Thursday in which reporters, production staff, and others came forward to accuse Morgan Freeman of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior. Eight of them were alleged victims of harassment or inappropriate behavior by Freeman. The other eight said they witnessed Freeman’s alleged conduct.

I fall into the first group.

I was a 25-year-old, green and determined on-camera reporter for a men’s magazine when I first met Freeman at the premiere of Now You See Me in 2013. My videographer and I decided to ask each actor, from Freeman to Mark Ruffalo to Isla Fisher to Michael Caine, “If you could do one magic trick, what would it be?” The answers ranged from disappearing to saving the environment, but Freeman’s was the real outlier.

After I asked the question, he responded, “You want me to say something clean don’t you?” I didn’t really get what he meant, so I said, “You don’t have to.” As in, be yourself, not realizing what I was getting myself into. He looked me up and down and said, “Honey, you wouldn’t have a stitch on…how about that?” I laughed. But I’ll be honest with you, I was not only caught off-guard, I was also confused. Did this seemingly sweet old actor mean what I thought he meant?

According to the Macmillan Dictionary, “not have a stitch on” means “to not be wearing any clothes.”

RELATED: Morgan Freeman Hits on Female Reporter in Resurfaced Video: ‘I Get to Look at You and Drool’

In the moment, it took me a second to process and recover. This at the time 75-year-old Oscar winner just basically told me, a third of his age, he wanted to see me naked…thank you, I guess? Mind you, he knew there was a camera on him, and he was surrounded by other actors and reporters. Still, he said it.

He walked away, and I turned to my videographer; we were both shocked. I wasn’t upset, or, I didn’t know I should be upset. It was more of discomfort and a bit of violation.

But that quickly dissipated, because we got something good. On camera. The clip was funny and juicy. Surely, this will blow up. I went home, excited to see the video live, but also feeling like something was off and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I blamed it on the fact that I didn’t react quicker—“must work on caught-off-guard reaction for the future,” I noted to myself. The only blame I placed that night was on myself. How does that make any sense?

The video went live the next day. But it didn’t blow up.

Almost exactly five years later, I’ll never forget my mint green dress that felt like it was being taken off with Freeman’s eyes. At the same time, I’ll also never forget feeling slightly flattered—a very, very famous actor told me I’m attractive. Not in those words. But, he did. That’s kind of cool…right?

As I got older, I slowly began to realize how wrong his comment was, and embarrassment set in.

I was embarrassed for not being more affected by it, for not taking action after. I didn’t acknowledge the discomfort I felt. I was so used to it; I’d been eyed and catcalled all my life—I was a woman with noticeable body parts. Plus, it could have been way worse.

It never really hit me that it was harassment. There are so many inadvertent boundaries placed on people when it comes to sexual misconduct. Victims often experience guilt for feeling harassed when someone out there has had it much worse than them, or think that they’re overreacting about just some silly comment. That is the last thing a victim should feel.

Then the Harvey Weinstein news broke, and I finally realized there was a legitimate reason something felt off that night. I should never have been exposed to such degrading comments, especially in the workplace, regardless of how minor and fleeting the moment was. I was more than a body, but in that moment, Freeman made me feel otherwise.

Unfortunately, all those years laughing it off have cost me. I didn’t feel I had a right to be mad if I wasn’t then. The worst part was, I wasn’t the only one who felt this way.

When I told people I was writing this article, some questioned the validity of it. Because it “didn’t bother me at the time.” Because I made jokes about it and shared it flippantly when people asked about interesting red carpet run-ins. Apparently, I wore it like a badge of honor.

First of all: No one knows how that affected me but me. Second of all: That’s the exact problem. That I didn’t automatically get offended. Reading the accounts of Weinstein’s accusers helped me realize why I brushed it off—the same reason many women did with Weinstein, and Matt Lauer, and Louis C.K., and so on: that just wasn’t how it worked. Famous men were untouchable. They really could do no wrong. This was OK. If anything, it was good to get the attention of a famous man…whatever kind of attention that was.

I felt it was time to come forward, but there were still some concerns.

This was Morgan Freeman. The beloved man who’s played God and raised money for various charities including the Red Cross. The man for whom everyone stood when he received the SAG Life Achievement Award, and who sort of spoke about gender equality in his acceptance speech.

Like many of the women who’ve spoken out against men in powerful positions, I knew this could affect my career. I interview celebrities for a living, and I know they are human, they make mistakes, so I gave him a second chance. But 18 chances is not something I’m willing to give, especially if that means one more woman, or young reporter, might be negatively affected by his behavior. And it’s not even really about Freeman. It’s about making sure people know this type of behavior is damaging and unacceptable.

Which brings me back to my original question, do I mess with the man who has played God multiple times?

Thanks to the courage I’ve acquired from the women who came before me, I have decided I will. This is no longer a laughing matter, and it never should have been in the first place.

God, you messed with the wrong girls.

Black Man Awarded $10,000 After Toronto Restaurant Made Him Pay Up Front For His Meal

Canada’s Ontario Human Rights Tribunal has ordered a popular Chinese restaurant to pay a black customer $ 10,000 for forcing the man and his friends to prepay for their meals in 2014, reports say.

Emile Wickham tells PEOPLE he was celebrating his 28th birthday with three friends on May 3, 2014, when the group decided to head to Hong Shing Chinese Restaurant —a beloved staple in downtown Toronto —for food.

“We were seated, we ordered food and the waiter immediately asked us to pay,” says Wickham, now 31. “We were skeptical, like, ‘Why do we need to pay before we eat?’ They indicated that it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.”

Wickham and his friends, the only black customers there at the time, did as they were asked. But suspicious of the rule, Wickham began asking other diners whether they’d been asked to pay upfront.

They all said no.

Wickham then confronted the waiter, whom he says quickly became defensive.

“We were confident, like, ‘Yo, this is messed up.’ When we confronted them, they didn’t even deny it,” Wickham says of the staff. “They offered us our money back. They didn’t offer any defense of why they did it.”

RELATED: Starbucks Apologizes After Boycott Erupts Over Video of Black Men Arrested in Philadelphia Store

Upset, the group collected their money and quickly left the restaurant.

“I couldn’t believe that they were so bold in it. I couldn’t believe the boldness of the action,” says Wickham, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago. “I had some hope that they would be like, ‘Guys, sorry we messed up. Please accept our apology.’ They have not showed any ounce of regret.”

He adds: “We have a business who thinks it’s okay to discriminate against its black customers.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Almost exactly one year after the incident, Wickham filed a complaint with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, which handles harassment and discrimination claims. Wickham accused restaurant staff of racially profiling him and his friends.

In a statement submitted to the Tribunal by an attorney for the restaurant, officials said the establishment had implemented a prepayment policy years ago for customers who were nor “regulars” at the restaurant in an attempt to prevent dining-and-dashing, according to the Washington Post. But one of Wickham’s friends, who was present the night of the incident, testified that he had eaten at Hong Shing numerous times.

The Tribunal also found no evidence that any such policy existed at the restaurant, the Post reports.

On April 18, the Tribunal ordered Hong Shing Chinese Restaurant officials to pay Wickham $ 10,000 as a result of the incident.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

However, Wickham says he was simply hoping for an apology.

“ doesn’t really bring me the level of excitement or joy other people might think it may give me. I really just wanted an apology and for the restaurant to be held accountable for their actions,” Wickham tells PEOPLE. “I would’ve been more than happy with them taking responsibility for what they did and showing a commitment to never do it again. That’s something I don’t feel is going to happen.”

But, he adds, he’s relieved that the Tribunal took him seriously.

“When I found out that the decision went in my favor, I was so relieved that we were believed. I didn’t even think about the monetary… I was just like, ‘Wow, she believed us.’ “

See Barack Obama Get Serenaded by Carolers in Hawaii: ‘We Sounded Terrible … But He Made Our Christmas’

Barack Obama just celebrated his first Christmas since leaving office — but a women’s resistance group gave him a reception fit for a president during his annual holiday visit to Hawaii.

When Windward ReSisters, a women’s movement based in Obama’s native Hawaii, heard he was returning to the islands with his family for the holidays, they decided to welcome the former president by singing Christmas carols outside the Paul Mitchell estate in lanikai, where the Obamas were staying.

“We got our group together on Saturday and went with our pussy hats and Santa hats and proceeded to Christmas carol in front of the estate,” group member Darlene Mandel tells PEOPLE.

“We sounded terrible,” Mandel joked.

But their efforts paid off.

Obama, who was hosting a Christmas party at the estate that evening, took a break to come outside and visit with the caroling group.

“After about 10 minutes, he came out with three Secret Service agents and I was ready with my trusty camera,” Mandel says, noting that Obama shook hands with several of the women and hugged one. “He was joking because my girlfriend spilled champagne on him. It was short and sweet and made our Christmas.”

Footage of the former president shows him laughing and joking with the carolers — and even joining them in a few bars of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

Obama can also be heard quipping to the group, “No wonder you’re singing so happy; I didn’t realize there was champagne to go with it!”

“I hope you guys have a wonderful Christmas,” he added before heading back inside.

Mandel later posted the video on the private Facebook group Pantsuit Nation, where it quickly garnered nearly 140,000 likes and almost 7,000 comments.

“As far as I know, this is the only informal Christmas greeting he gave this year, besides the Obama family’s official card,” Mandel says.

“He and Ohana (family) are so missed,” she adds.

Kristen Bell Shares the Cooking Mistake She’s Made So Many Times, It’s Now a Holiday Tradition

In the midst of everything that comes with hosting a holiday, people are bound to forget a thing or two sometimes — and Kristen Bell is no exception.

Bell, who has partnered with Whole Foods Market for this year’s holiday campaign, says for the past two or three years, she’s realized she’s made the same mistake every time dinner has rolled around: “Between me and my mom, we forget to pull the tofurkey out of the freezer,” the vegetarian actress tells PEOPLE. “We were so concerned with the turkey for everyone, so 5 p.m. rolls around and we’re like ‘Oh no, we have a frozen tofurkey.’”

Bell says she now has a new “mini” tradition: enjoying the tofurkey the day after the actual holiday.

The Bad Moms 2 star, who shares several fun tips in a series of videos for the campaign, says hosting people at her house and cooking for them is her “love language.”

“It’s my ideal scenario,” she tells PEOPLE. “I enjoy going out to a good dinner but I prefer an environment where I can control the light and the music and the people that I’m around and have a more intimate experience. I enjoy welcoming people into my home.”

RELATED: The Absolute Best Thanksgiving Side Dishes

Bell, who is married to actor Dax Shepard, says around the holidays they are usually craving a sweet potato dish. “There’s so much you can do with it like twice baking it and adding to it to be sweet or savory by putting fruit like pomegranates on top or putting maple syrup on top of it.”

And while the couple likes to eat what is seasonally available, Bell says it’s also important she knows where the food they eat comes from.

“I think it’s important to make eating not just conscious, but fun, and I think it’s important to pay attention to where your food is from and what food is going into your body,” the mom of two says. “I knew that from a really young age because I became a vegetarian at 11 and my mom’s a nurse so she said if you’re going to be a vegetarian you need to know what foods you need and how to feed your body.”

WATCH THIS: Marshmallow Turkey Leg Treats for Thanksgiving

Bell has been passing her food knowledge down to her daughters, who also enjoy spending time in the kitchen.

“I do like to involve them as much as I possibly can,” Bell says. “I also like that they are interested in the fact that I care so much about food and we can talk about that and why we eat the foods we eat, and talk about a colorful plate when I’m cutting up vegetables for a platter or a dish. We talk about what goes into it and why it’s good for your body. We have a lot of those discussions in our house so they understand that eating is something that should be done consciously.”

Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club Requests to Hire 70 Foreign Workers During Administration’s ‘Made in America’ Week

Trump‘s Mar-a-Lago Club has requested approval to hire a total of 70 foreign employees to staff the Palm Beach, Florida, estate starting in October – a move that, coincidentally, comes during the president’s Made In America Week, the Washington Post and Buzzfeed News have reported.

According to three requests posted to the Department of Labor’s Public Job Registry, Mar-A-Lago is seeking to hire 15 housekeepers, 35 waiters and 20 cooks through H-2B visas.

The H-2B visas would allow the foreign workers to staff the for-profit club – which Trump has visited 25 times since beginning his presidency – from this October until May 2018. Trump’s Jupiter, Florida, golf club made a similar request for six cooks.

H-2B visas are specifically for foreign workers that will fill temporary jobs in the U.S. in fields including tourism and construction, among other things, the Post reported. Just earlier this week, the administration said it was expanding the H-2B program to offer an additional 15,000 visas to foreign workers, reported The Hill.

A Department of Labor spokesman told the outlet that Mar-a-Lago and Trump’s Jupiter golf club are required to attempt to fill the positions with American workers first, before they can ask the Department of Homeland Security to issue visas for foreign workers who want the roles.

Coincidentally, the Trump administration has spent most of its Made in America Week highlighting U.S.-made products and companies.

The week – which is the first of several upcoming themed weeks – kicked off on Monday, and has included a roundtable discussion profiling 20 companies that manufacture their products in the U.S.

The White House also hosted a American Product Showcase, which included U.S. companies from all 50 states.

Joseph Fiennes Says ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Made Him An Even Bigger Feminist

It’s hard to work on a TV show like “The Handmaid’s Tale” and not be “jolted” into a “state of consciousness,” according to Joseph Fiennes.

Fiennes plays Commander Fred Waterford, the leader of the oppressive dystopian republic called Gilead in Hulu’s hit series “The Handmaid’s Tale,” based on the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood. The book has been heralded as a feminist classic and (after some initial back and forth) the show seems to be following suit. So it comes as no surprise that Fiennes says he’s become an even bigger feminist after playing the Commander on a set full of iconic women like Elisabeth Moss (the show’s protagonist Offred) and Yvonne Strahovski (Serena Joy, the Commander’s brilliantly sadistic wife).

In a June 15 interview with Marie Claire, Fiennes said the series has really awoken him to women’s issues ― especially since the “most important people” in his life are his wife and two daughters.

“Certainly the show has jolted me into a much more alert state of the inequality amongst the sexes,” he said. “By virtue of that, I feel much more switched on to feminism, and what it means and stands for. I want my daughters to live in a world where there is equality and parity of pay. We’ve got a long way to go. I read a statistic that if you’re a Hispanic woman it’ll be over 200 years until you achieve parity of pay. So yes, the show has jolted me into a state of consciousness.”

The show has jolted me into a much more alert state of the inequality amongst the sexes. By virtue of that, I feel much more switched on to feminism, and what it means and stands for.
Joseph Fiennes

Fiennes also spoke about the eery way the dystopian future depicted in “The Handmaid’s Tale” has begun to feel closer to real life over the last year. From the U.S. pulling out of the Paris climate deal to the constant war over women’s bodies and reproductive autonomy, Fiennes pointed to the parallels between fictional Gilead and the United States in 2017.

“When you wake up and you see that America has pulled out of the climate deal in Paris, that sends huge messages about putting coal before the planet. Gilead has suffered from a fragile ecology that is now toxic and affecting fertility rates,” Fiennes told Marie Claire. “There is truth to it ― there is connection, themes, and parallels, sadly. It’s getting sharper and sharper, especially for women ― the autonomy of their bodies, and pro-choice vs. pro-life. Look at the administration, the imbalance of the female presence ― there’s a lot to draw on.”

One silver lining? The protests and resistance the U.S. has seen since President Donald Trump took office.

“It was wonderful seeing the woman’s marches, and seeing numbers bigger than the president’s inauguration,” Fiennes said. “It gives one great heart that there are people present, alert, and awake, and voicing their frustrations. We need more of that.”

Head over to Marie Claire to read the rest of Fiennes’ interview.

The World Roger Ailes Made

This op-ed originally appeared in the NY Daily News on May 18, 2017.

When we released “Outfoxed,” in 2004, the clear and present danger Roger Ailes presented to democracy was not as patently obvious as it is today. Back then, even liberals considered what he was doing basically legitimate news with some bad commentators. They assumed people would be able to tell the difference.

Flash forward to 2016 and the rise of Donald Trump. Now we know better. Roger Ailes made Donald Trump President. And if we don’t learn from how that happened, we are doomed to repeat it.

Part of what made Ailes successful was simply talent. He understood what made a story compelling, the importance of visual storytelling. He mastered the art of backing verbal lies with pictures, with video that, while often aggressively edited or taken terribly out of context, nonetheless provides the casual viewer with the comfort of having “seen it with my own eyes.”

He added Hollywood-style mood music to so-called news programming, signaling clearly for audiences who was a hero and who a villain, and exactly how they were supposed to feel about a particular story. He perfected the quick cut, the action-film editing that keeps the heart pumping and the rational reaction and pondering to a minimum. Reality television and news were not always distinguishable, and that was what Ailes wanted.

And of course, he was a bully. He perfected the art of bullying, though it did eventually bring him down. People were terrified of him, women in particular.

We made a film about a news organization where people were so scared of the boss that we had to hide their faces and voices. We could not get anyone to come forward on camera about the sexual harassment, but it was no secret even way back in 2004. Women were scared to come to work, scared to be in a room with him. His comeuppance was nothing compared to the very real psychological damage done.

Ailes made bullying cool. He hired, hyped and promoted infamous bullies — Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly. He made bullying not only acceptable but somehow desirable, as if the ability to yell louder, to interrupt more, to refuse to budge in the face of reality was the mark of a powerful person or a leader. It is not a long walk from Bill O’Reilly to Donald Trump.

Formidable as it was, Ailes’ talents — dubious and otherwise — would not have had the impact they did were it not for his pursuit of an agenda. Ailes did not suggest that his “journalists” use certain language, twist certain facts and omit certain others. Ailes insisted upon it. In “Outfoxed,” we exposed memos proscribing exactly what to cover and exactly how to cover it.

Ailes started with the story he wanted told, and bent everything within his formidable reach to tell it that way. He did so without apology, without qualms.

The result was what we have today: A society inured to lying, where truth is in the eye of the beholder, where being loud and vehement is the same as being correct. Technology helps spread fake news around, but Ailes made it normal, made it acceptable, to believe what one wanted to believe.

Now we are seeing a bit of a bounce back of the traditional values of journalism: getting facts right, digging beneath the surface — particularly in print. That’s heartening but it has to last, and it has to grow. We have to see a commitment from the mainstream media, and broadcast media in particular, to take on Fox News and fake news directly, to call a lie what it is and to refuse to cover the latest Twitter rant even if the ranter is our president.

In the meantime, remember Roger Ailes and pledge ourselves to vigilance in news consumption, in truth-telling and standing up to bullies, bigots and profiteers, be they behind the camera, or in front of it.

Made Gold Nabs Investment to Grow Wholesale, Custom Design Program

A capital infusion has Los Angeles denim and ready-to-wear company Made Gold ready take some big steps toward growth.
The company’s designer and founder Marta Goldschmied, daughter of denim guru Adriano Goldschmied, said the money gives her the breathing room to focus on being a creative. The investment also brings on investor Gary Brifil as chief executive officer.
The brand, which was launched in 2014 and counts about five employees, has gained a following among those who gravitate to its glam-rock-inspired jeans designed with features such as lace-up detailing running along the sides. That lace-up style in particular, called the Betty and retailing for $ 298, has been seen on Bella and Gigi Hadid and Kylie Jenner.
“I feel like I can finally get back into what I enjoy doing, which is creating and being at the laundry,” Goldschmied said. “It’s heavily denim-focused, but I’d like to venture into some knits and some tops and just expand the lifestyle so Gary’s really allowed me to follow my dream. Made for L.A.: Billy Reid Sets Up Shop at Magasin

Billy Reid will plant a flag — albeit temporary — on the West Coast today. The Alabama designer is set to kick off his monthlong pop-up shop at friend Josh Peskowitz’s Magasin concept shop in Culver City, Calif., with a made-to-measure event running through the weekend.
“We think it’s a good opportunity for them to showcase more of who they are in Los Angeles,” Peskowitz said. “It’s a nice, organic partnership certainly and I have an enormous amount of respect for him.”
The temporary installment will carry exclusives including hand-painted graphic shirts and an assortment of tailored pieces, such as shorts made from selvage chambray. This weekend, clients of the brand can come into the store for custom orders, which have about a four- to six-week turnaround.
The designer, while having done trunk shows and special installations within his own stores, has never offered the made-to-measure experience outside of those and Reid said the success of what happens at Magasin will no doubt be weighed for the possibility of doing similar events going forward.
“We do not have a shop out here on the West Coast, but we have several customers out here,” Reid said. “I think once we go through it and figure out

Lyft made these goofy wearables as a prank but they're actually kind of cool

Lyft made these goofy wearables as a prank but they're actually kind of coolWould you believe it if Lyft rolled out an actual, physical product to hail a ride? A one-use wearable, giving you streamlined access to all the service's cars at the lyft (lolz) of your thumb? You shouldn't believe it — well, not completely. The ride-hailing app is currently shilling Mono, a wearable with some legitimately cool specs: it has BLE tech to pair with your phone, a micro-controller synched with the Lyft API that reads gyroscope and accelerometer data to request rides, and motion-triggered LED confirmation indicators to let you know your trip status without having to check your phone.   Just stick your thumb in the air wearing the Mono, Lyft claims, and you'll soon be ferried on your way.  SEE ALSO: Lyft just came out with its biggest innovation yet: buses But you'll (probably) never see someone rocking a Mono to get a ride home after a night out on the town — it's April Fools' Day season again, and the wearable is Lyft's idea of a viral prank, designed to confound the internet and get us all buzzing. The only problem is, Lyft didn't just make a joke prototype for a one-off photoshoot — the company went all the way in, creating actual working Mono devices.  Sure, we have all the hallmarks of a viral prank campaign — a slightly ridiculous concept that's
just believable enough, especially with the hyped-up videos and web presence to back it up. But bringing Mono to life makes it less a prank and more a one-off promotion, like Pizza Hut's pie-ordering sneakers for March Madness.  We're giving away 5 Monos! Post a photo of the Mono on Twitter/Instagram tagging @lyft, #GetMono, and #Sweepstakes. https://t.co/O58NUdhPSh pic.twitter.com/jb4ZjqYaIY — Lyft (@lyft) March 30, 2017 It's almost like Snapchat Spectacles on a small scale: a wearable created to give users a physical extension of an experience typically tethered to smartphones. Mono's little more than a novelty item — obviously, no one's
really gonna walk around with their thumb in the air more than once or twice for kicks — but it is kinda cool looking and, dare I say it, fun.  That's what April Fool's is all about, right? We'll cut Lyft some slack here for the full-out effort even with the botched delivery — just as long as they don't immediately start bragging about how #woke hailing a car with your thumb can be.  WATCH: I tried a self-driving car in London and lived to tell the tale

Francis Ford Coppola Says ‘The Godfather’ Wouldn’t Get Made Today

You haven’t seen devotion until you’ve been in a room with nearly 6,000 “Godfather” disciples. The manic fandom typically reserved for Comic-Con and “Star Wars” assemblies was front and center when Francis Ford Coppola and the cast reunited Saturday at the Tribeca Film Festival’s closing night.

Capping off a nine-hour event that included screenings of “The Godfather” and “The Godfather Part II,” a 45th-anniversary panel discussion found Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro, James Caan, Talia Shire and Rubert Duvall recounting the messy process of making a movie they never expected to become such a defining Hollywood signature.

The sold-out crowd at Radio City Music Hall had been boisterous throughout both films, cheering at iconic dialogue and almost every gruesome death or Corleone victory. Just imagine how enthusiastic they were by the time this A-list group took the stage.

“The Godfather” is one of the most chronicled movies in history, as proven by the nearly 800-page annotated book Coppola published last year. Much of Saturday’s panel retread well-told stories: Paramount’s resistance to casting the crotchety Marlon Brando, the studio threatening to fire Coppola out of fear that his directorial choices would jeopardize the success, the fateful single take in which Coppola added a cat to the opening scene

Frenzy erupted when moderator Taylor Hackford asked the audience to shout out questions. One fan posed something that further explained the film’s fervent following: Could “The Godfather” be made today?

The answer, according to Coppola, is no.

Well, it could be made, he said, but it would be an offer major studios would have to refuse.

The first “Godfather” cost $ 6.5 million, Coppola explained. That’s the equivalent of about $ 38 million today, which would make it a mid-budget project in a market that’s overrun by tentpole titles costing well over $ 100 million apiece, he said. The “Godfather Part II” budget swelled to “$ 11 or $ 12 million,” or about $ 64 to $ 70 million nowadays.

“It would never get through the process of getting an OK, or what they now call a green-light,” Coppola said. Contemporary Hollywood studios, he pointed out, are mostly interested in movies with built-in franchise potential ― “pretty much a Marvel comic,” a comment that provoked chuckles from the audience.

“Basically there’s not enough wires,” Caan joked, referring to the suspension technique used to film superheroes and Hogwarts wizards in flight.

Coppola and Caan’s assessment is painfully accurate: Original movies are no longer Hollywood’s breadwinners. The mid-budget adult release ― ranging from about $ 10 million to $ 70 million ― has become something of a relic over the past 15 years, replaced instead by comic-book adaptations, reboots and pre-determined cash cows.

Even though it’s based on the popular novel by Mario Puzo, were Coppola to pitch “The Godfather” today, he would have a tough time securing the funds and support needed. The first installment made $ 245 million worldwide, which today amounts to $ 1.4 billion. For a film without animation or dazzling technical effects, that seems impossible in 2017.

Coppola said former MGM owner Kirk Kerkorian once asked how one makes a movie that is both financially and artistically successful. “I said to him, ‘Risk,’” he said. “Nobody wants the risk when you get into business.”

Samsung Destroys Guy Who Made A Dick Pic Joke On Twitter

What a tool.

Last week, Samsung posted a photo of its latest phone release, the Galaxy S8, on its Twitter page. In the caption, the company encouraged its fans to share the first photo they took with the new phone.

Many of the tweets were pretty cute.

Then that guy, who goes by the Twitter handle, @savEdward, decided to pipe up and make a that joke.

But Samsung wasn’t having any of that. The company decided to respond to @savEdward with a simple yet effective emoji.

Needless to say, Twitter was quick to sing Samsung’s praises.

Well played, Samsung. Well played.

Danielle Brooks Just Made Women Everywhere Feel Better About Stretch Marks

Like any of us, Danielle Brooks sometimes has a hard time accepting her stretch marks. But she doesn’t let them define her.

The “Orange Is The New Black” actress recently opened up about her stretch marks for People magazine’s 2017 Most Beautiful Woman issue.

“Sometimes I’ll look at myself and be like, ‘Dang girl, you got a lot of stretch marks.’ But then I’m like, ‘That’s just the road map of my strength,’” she said.

The 27-year-old added, “They remind me of things that I’ve gone through. I need to just embrace them and celebrate them. For the most part, I find ways to embrace my body.”

Brooks recently shared photos from her People shoot, where she went make-up free for the mag, alongside fellow actress Nina Dobrev. The “OITNB” star explained why she chose to go barefaced in an empowering Instagram post.

This Little Girl Loves Costco So Much, She Made It Her Birthday Party Theme

When Kimber Walker celebrated her fifth birthday, she picked a pretty unconventional party theme.

The North Carolina preschooler commemorated the occasion with a Costco-themed party at her home in February.

“She is obsessed with Costco,” Kimber’s mom, Niki, told The Huffington Post. “We served hotdogs and pizza, set up sample stations, printed dollars with her face on them, had Costco pizza and Kirkland ice cream. We also had a little shop set up, and everyone designed their own ‘membership cards’.”

Niki said Kimber had been requesting a Costco-themed party for two years, so the family finally decided to bring her dream to life for her fifth birthday.

The Walkers declared their daughter “Employee of the Month” and set up a photo area for guests to take photos with a sign stating that. Their local Winston-Salem Costco even gave them a special employee badge for the little girl.

Kimber had a blast at the party, and her guests enjoyed the celebration as well.

“They thought it was hilarious and quirky, which both describe my daughter,” said the mom.  “One of the little girls that came said that it was the best party that she had ever been to, including all of her own. “

Why ‘Shots Fired’ Made An Unarmed White Student The Victim Of A Police Shooting

Filmmakers Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood are aiming to uncover the complexities of America’s criminal justice system with their new Fox drama series “Shots Fired.”

Starring Sanaa Lathan, Tristan “Mack” Wilds, Stephan James, Helen Hunt and Aisha Hinds, the 10-episode series chronicles the aftermath of two racially charged shootings in a small North Carolina town following African American police officer Joshua Beck (played by Wilds) killing an unarmed white college student.

The decision by the husband-wife team to reverse the narrative of police brutality came during the early stages of the show’s development, according to Prince-Bythewood.

The “Love & Basketball” director tells The Huffington Post that the story was inspired by George Zimmerman’s much-publicized 2013 trial in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, in which the former neighborhood watch coordinator received over $ 200,000 from supporters to help fund his legal defense.

“What struck us after the Zimmerman trial was how they kept reporting on how much money was being donated to George Zimmerman,” she said. “And it was a shock that so much of the population was empathizing with him and not the 17-year-old boy who was killed for absolutely no reason. And it shocked us, but not everyone was seeing that. And the fact that when these shootings happen, it seems like the first thing that happens is that people start to demonize the victim and make excuses for what happened.”

“So we felt if we flipped it, it would give people who normally don’t deal with this an opportunity to feel what it’s like to be in our shoes, so to speak,” she continued. “And hopefully empathize and understand so that when it happens you’re not desensitized anymore.”

The show’s recurring themes of race and social justice also delve into the related economic effects of federal private prisons and America’s school-to-prison pipeline.

Through the years, privately owned prison facilities have faced scrutiny over safety and security, especially in comparison to federally run prisons.

Various reports have concluded that students of color face harsher disciplinary action and are more likely to be pushed out of school than their white counterparts ― all of which contributes to America’s increasing mass incarceration rates and the disproportionate number of black and Latino prisoners.

“We don’t think people understand and know about the pipeline and what private prisons do and how they make money and how corrupt it is and how it absolutely affects policing,” Prince-Bythewood said. “That was one of the things that we wanted to do with the show is be able to open it up and show this issue from every seat in the house, not just the victims and the families and the police, but how it rises up into the politics and how laws are made and why they’re made to benefit people in power.”

“All of this affects the people on the ground. The private prison complex is a horrifying thing,” she added. “And also what happens in our schools and the equity in schools can absolutely affect a child’s chance of living life.”

In addition to her hope for the show’s characters to spark more activism in America, the 47-year-old filmmaker also wants politicians and law enforcement officials to take note of the show’s underlying messages to help create a more unified America.

“We hope that we give a blueprint,” she said. “Our show isn’t just ten hours of venting, but hopefully at the end of the ten hours we’re offering some thoughts on how things can change.”

“Shots Fired” airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on Fox.

Awesome Teen Made Her Sister A Shirt That Exposes The Sexism Of Dress Codes

When 13-year-old Grace Villegas wore a long-sleeve, off-the-shoulder shirt to school this week, she didn’t expect her teachers to comment on it. But that’s exactly what happened.

Villegas told Yahoo Style that her Charlotte Russe shirt led teachers at her Kansas middle school to give her “looks that made me uncomfortable in my own skin.” The teen also said that several teachers made comments about the amount of skin she was exposing.

According to her older sister, Isabella, 18, one teacher told Grace that “she was revealing too much chest and shoulders,” and another told her, “You’re just making bad decisions today, Grace.” Isabella told The Huffington Post that Grace eventually changed outfits due to the shame she felt.

When the teen got home and told her older sister what had happened, Isabella was angry. So she decided to channel that frustration into a statement-making T-shirt.

I wanted girls to know that they don’t have to stay quiet.
Isabella Villegas, 18

The shirt Isabella made outlines her issues with school dress codes and the way they are enforced ― specifically when it comes to young women. The tee reads:

DRESS CODE:

-promotes the objectification & sexualization of young bodies

-blames the wearer for the onlooker’s perceptions/actions

-perpetuates rape culture

-is BS

Later that evening, she tweeted about it:

The tweet gained significant traction. As of Friday, it has nearly 1,200 retweets and 3,000 likes. And hundreds of people have tweeted back at Isabella.

The 18-year-old told HuffPost that while she doesn’t think dress codes should be completely abolished, they shouldn’t exist as tools of shame.

“Young girls should not be shamed for showing their shoulders and other non-sexual parts of their body for non-sexual reasons,” she said. “[Grace] went in feeling confident, and left feeling like her teachers no longer view her as the good student she is. I wanted girls to know that they don’t have to stay quiet.”

This Bride-To-Be Made A Wedding Dress Out Of 200 Taco Bell Wrappers

One bride-to-be is taking her love for Taco Bell to the extreme.

Diane Nguyen is going viral after creating a wedding dress from 200 (new, not used) Taco Bell wrappers. The delicious stunt is for Taco Bell’s new “Love and Tacos” contest, which will send one lucky couple ―hopefully Nguyen and her fiancé, Nick Ward ― to get married at a Taco Bell in Vegas.

“It’s time to spill the beans. We have been engaged for 4 years, and together for 10,” Nguyen wrote in an Instagram post for the contest. “Taco Bell has been there through the years, from the after school runs, to late meals after work (or a night of partying). Our love for each other is as cheesy as a quesadilla.”

She added, “We’re nachos getting married, it’s going to be a Las Vegas tacover. Lettuce celebrate our love at the Taco Bell Chapel in Vegas, cuz we are ready to guac and roll.”

Nguyen told The Huffington Post via email that the gown was inspired by the likes of “Project Runway,” “Ru Paul’s Drag Race”  and “Face Off.” It took roughly five to six hours to make. Her fiance’s sister, Patra, also helped create the dress, as did a kind Taco Bell manager.

A very nice manager donated 400 wrappers to us in exchange for a combo meal purchase,” she said. “We already had the other materials (hot glue, an old corset, and a white sheet) on hand, so it cost around $ 10!”

Nguyen said that she and Ward became friends in high school, though they only started dating at the end of college.

“When the time was right, I asked him out and we are still tormenting each other ten years later!” she said. “We’re always goofing around and love to incorporate our friends into our shenanigans.”

#relationshipgoals achieved.

A post shared by Diane Nguyen (@dianesaurusrex) on

Though the two didn’t originally set out to get married in a Taco Bell, it’s now become their mission to win the contest and make it happen. But even if they don’t win, they have their whole lives ahead of them, probably filled with tons of fun shenanigans and Taco Bell runs.

“It’s been a fun ride and we’re both excited to see where life takes us,” Nguyen said. “Crappy high-five partners for life.”

If you’d like to vote for the “nacho average couple” in the Taco Bell contest, head here. Voting ends on March 5.

Someone Made Tomi Lahren A Website She’d Definitely Hate

Tomi Lahren is a contentious political commentator.

The host of “Tomi” on TheBlaze has spoken out against abortion, the Women’s March, President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and so-called liberal privilege. She’s asks the hard questions, like, “Can white people do anything?” and delivers advice like, “If you don’t want to be attacked, keep your clothes on.”

So, naturally, someone made her a website that fits her beliefs quite perfectly: TomiLahren.org.

The site is a single page that has links to donate to the Environmental Defense Fund, the ACLU, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, and Planned Parenthood ― all overlaid on a wallpaper of a Tomi Lahren tweet that reads,”Anyone else need a drink?”

TomiLahren.org was created by 23-year-old Sam Hopkins, a software engineer, who was inspired to put this whole thing together after listening to Kellyanne Conway’s post-inauguration talk about “alternative facts.”

“I spent a good amount of time on Sunday looking up political themed domain names to buy and stumbled across TomiLahren.org,” Hopkins told The Huffington Post. “I originally wanted to buy alternativefacts.news and turn it into a satirical site.”

Because alternativefacts.news was taken, Hopkins bought TomiLahren.org for $ 18 and here we are.

Currently, the site has more than 191,000 visitors and counting.

The irony here, of course, is the organizations the site links to. Lahren is passionately pro-life, committed to the Second Amendment, has a distaste for the “liberal agenda,” doesn’t believe climate change is of high importance, and frequently criticizes Black Lives Matter along with those who speak out against police brutality.

Well, like many other things in the world, Tomi will most likely hate this website. Nevertheless, Twitter seems to like it:

George Clooney Remembers His Late Cousin Miguel Ferrer: He ‘Made the World Brighter’

George Clooney is paying tribute to his late cousin Miguel Ferrer, who passed away Thursday after a battle with cancer.

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, Clooney remembers the actor, who he was fortunate to call a family member.

“Today history will mark giant changes in our world, and lost to most will be that on the same day Miguel Ferrer lost his battle to throat cancer. But not lost to his family,” Clooney said in the statement.

“Miguel made the world brighter and funnier and his passing is felt so deeply in our family that events of the day, (monumental  events), pale in comparison,” Clooney continued. “We love you Miguel. We always will.”

PEOPLE reported Thursday that the NCIS: Los Angeles and Crossing Jordan actor died at the age of 61 his home surrounded by friends and family.

Ferrer is survived by his wife Lori, and sons Lukas and Rafi, whom he felt were his most important accomplishments in life, according to an obituary released by NCIS: Los Angeles.

These 15 Viral Beauty Tricks Made 2016 Even Weirder

Yes, 2016 was weird. And it had the beauty trends to match. Luckily, nothing lasts forever, even if those 100 coats of nail polish videos felt like they might.

As the year comes to an end, there’s no better time to revisit the trends that inspired a whole lot of head scratching, wonderment and just as many YouTube tutorials.

Check them out below and stay weird, beauty lovers.

1. Succulent nails

Because the only thing more painfully hip than nail art is succulent nail art.

2. KFC’s chicken-flavored nail polish.

Edible, chicken-flavored and oh so weird.

3. The V-Steam.

This Gwyneth Paltrow-approved treatment involves a tube that blows hot steam onto your vagina that allegedly “balances female hormone levels” (dubious). We’re not so sure about paying upward of $ 50 to give our vaginas steam “facials,” but who are we to judge!

4. Hologram lips.

OK, this one, that requires just one $ 14 lip gloss, is just as cool as it is weird.

5. Lisa Frank hair.

Because rainbows make everyone smile. #lyssdidmyhair #rainbowhair #hairvideo #allthecolors #lisafrankhair

A video posted by Connecticut Hairstylist (@lysseon) on

The Lisa Frank obsession this year prompted a clothing line, coloring books and this mesmerizing, psychedelic trend in hair dye. Rainbow hair isn’t necessarily weird, but the fact that it’s inspired by 90s-era school stationary is a little unusual.

6. Crystal lips

They’re made using “heavy glitter, base color and clear gloss” and they are so intense.

7. 100 layers videos.

Starting with “polish mountain,” beauty vloggers spent hours of their lives in 2016 demonstrating what 100 layers of mascara, foundation and liquid lipstick look like (to name a few). Jenna Marbles took it about 500 steps further when she did them all, plus hairspray and false lashes, because why not?

8. The edible chocolate manicure

OK, this mani made with icing may have been a joke, but that didn’t make it any less weird (or fun to watch).

9. Nutella hair dye.

As if we needed another reason to idolize Nutella: it allegedly lightens hair (we are highly skeptical) in addition to being the most delightful snack on the planet. Have we mentioned we’re skeptical? Of course, pretending to use Nutella as a hair dye would be pretty weird too.

10. Cheeto Curls

YouTuber Grav3yardgirl actually achieved some enviable ringlets from wrapping her hair in puffy Cheetos, but we’d still advise against trying this one at home.

11. Penis-imprinted highlighters.

Makeup brand Bitch Slap Cosmetics crafted these genitalia-themed highlighters that no one ever asked for.

12. Neck contouring.

So… Will this be a new trend? What do you guys think? #neckcontour ( @mwhairstyles) #fdbeauty

A video posted by Female Daily Network (@femaledailynetwork) on

Maybe useful for a red carpet you’re planning to walk down backward? Otherwise, this one just seems difficult to maneuver and a waste of time.

13. Boob masks.

You know those sheet masks you put on your face? Well, these are those but for boobs. They even have nipple cutouts. Reminder: Your boobs are perfect the way they are, sheet mask or otherwise.

14. Glow-in-the-dark hair.

Celebrity hairstylist Guy Tang created this high-octane dye job that legit glows in the dark. Black lights have never been more needed.

15. Vagasil as a primer.

Vagisil treats yeast infections, sure, but its ingredients do wonders for filling in your fine lines and acting as a great base for makeup, according to a bunch of beauty bloggers.

‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ Almost Never Made It To Television

In 1965, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” debuted on CBS, with over 15 million people tuning in for the first showing. Over the next five decades, millions more watched the story of a few, still mostly hairless, kids who go on a quest to find the true meaning of celebrating Christmas.

Although the multigenerational resonance of this television special now seems fated, the fact that “A Charlie Brown Christmas” even made it on TV was actually so serendipitous that it’s almost easy to believe some divine, jolly red-suited figure intervened to guide its path.

The Huffington Post spoke on the phone with producer Lee Mendelson about how CBS execs, animator Bill Melendez, and Mendelson himself thought the final product was a disaster before it aired.

“When it was all finished, we thought we’d ruined Charlie Brown,” said Mendelson, who now ― comfortably sitting atop half a century of “Charlie Brown” success, acclaim and syndication money ― can talk openly about the time he thought he’d irrevocably tank cartoonist Charles Schulz’s franchise.

This special was the very first time Schulz had allowed an animator — in this case, Melendez — and producer to try to turn the Charlie Brown–centered “Peanuts” comic strip into a video feature. The stakes were high to not destroy Schulz’s successfully syndicated comic about a kid who couldn’t kick a football or learn to switch up his wardrobe from a yellow and black shirt.

In the alternate timeline where “A Charlie Brown Christmas” actually was a flop, the Halloween and Thanksgiving specials certainly would’ve never been made.

“If you go back and look over the years, very, very few comic strips ever went beyond one network special,” said Mendelson, explaining the concern this apparent disaster of a special could cause for the brand. “They’d get one shot and be gone.”

Adding to Mendelson’s guilt at the time was that he was the one who roped Schulz into the deal with advertising group McCann Erickson to create this special, which Coca-Cola would sponsor.

(As an aside, Schulz, Melendez and Mendelson were fully aware that it was strange their movie was championing anti-commercialism, while a corporate giant made that movie possible. “The whole thing was a paradox,” said Mendelson. “It was all kind of mixed together and we all went marching forward realizing the paradox involved, as did Coca-Cola.”)

Mendelson had first become friends with Schulz after he cold-called the cartoonist to pitch making a documentary about him. Both of them happened to live in the San Francisco area, and the producer simply found Schulz’s number listed in the phone book. The two bonded over a love for baseball, in particular San Francisco Giants star Willie Mays, who was the subject of another of Mendelson’s documentaries.

Nobody ended up buying the film Mendelson made about Schulz, but their known relationship caused McCann to give Mendelson a call to see whether Schulz had any interest in making a Christmas special.

“I frankly just lied and said, ‘Oh, yes, we’ve talked about it quite a bit,’” said Mendelson. McCann wanted an outline for Coca-Cola by the next week, which Mendelson promised he could give them ― based on nothing.

“I hung up the phone, stared at the phone for a few minutes, then I picked it up and called Mr. Schulz and I said, ‘I think I just sold “A Charlie Brown Christmas,”’” explained Mendelson. “And he said, ‘What in the world is that?’ And I said, ‘It’s something you’re going to write tomorrow.’ And again, there was another 10-second pause and he said, ‘OK, come on up, we can do it.’”

They called up Melendez and the three made the outline for the special in just one day. “The final show that came out was just about the same show we outlined that first day, never really changed it at all,” said Mendelson.

The final major component of the movie was filled in an equally happenstance way, as Mendelson heard a song by San Francisco musician Vince Guaraldi in a cab. He hired the local for the project.

“It was just one of those surreal things that comes together,” said Mendelson. “Like Vince Guaraldi ― where does he live? ― he lives in San Francisco. What’re the odds of that happening? I don’t know if you call that fate or serendipity or what, but why we all ended up in San Francisco, I will never know.”

But if, in retrospect, the combination of these people seems like destiny, at the time it certainly felt like a mess.

Mendelson and Melendez both thought that the special was too slow and that the inclusion of religion would not go over well.

“When [Schulz] said, ‘You know, we’re going to have Linus read from the Bible,’ Bill and I looked at each other and said, ‘Uh oh, that doesn’t sound very good,’” said Mendelson. “But then Schulz said, ‘Look, if we’re going to do this, we should talk about what Christmas is all about, not just do a cartoon with no particular point of view.’”

Schulz also vehemently opposed Mendelson’s suggestion that there be a laugh track, given this was a cartoon.

The execs at CBS ended up having the same thoughts as Mendelson and Melendez, while also believing the music was a bad fit. But Schulz’s team turned in the finished work just a bit over a week before the scheduled airdate, and so changes weren’t an option.

“[The CBS execs] thought the kids were using big words,” said Mendelson. “They didn’t get the jazz music, and so they said, ‘Well, we’ll put it on the air, not much we can do about it. It’s in TV Guide, we’ll put it on, it’s not going to hurt anything.’”

It may seem strange that Schulz agreed to risk the longevity of his career to make such a unique special that went against the conventional wisdom of the time, but Mendelson explained it was a move in line with Schulz’s nature.

“He was very competitive always ― in sports, or being the best comic strip or whatever,” said Mendelson. “So looking back, I can see where he would say, ‘Come on, we can do it.’ He was very confident in it, but he took an enormous risk.”

Just like Charlie Brown fought for his authentic Christmas tree, or just like Schulz fought for his vision, sometimes you’ve got to believe you’re the one with the right idea in a room full of doubters.

“Charlie Brown endures bullying and keeps fighting back ― [this message] is so important today,” concluded Mendelson. “Over the past 50 years, I’ve heard from so many different minority groups that identify with Charlie Brown and his struggle. His struggle is like their struggle. If there’s any way that Charlie Brown’s success can wave the flag for the bullied, then I think that’s a good thing.”

As all the characters yell at the end of the special, “Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown.”

Greg Lauren, Banana Republic Partner for Made in L.A. Men’s Collection

Banana Republic is following Greg Lauren down the path of artisanally crafted, domestically sewn fashion for its new men’s collaboration.
Lauren, who’s known for designing clothes that meld Old World tailoring with resourcefulness in incorporating vintage fabrics at his namesake Los Angeles-based label, is offering 16 pieces that have undergone multiple washings and hand-done techniques in local factories. In a partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Gap Inc.’s Banana Republic is embarking on the new capsule collection to follow a women’s project designed with Timo Weiland last March.
“We want to challenge our customers, the ones that are forward thinking,” said Michael Anderson, the retailer’s senior vice president of design. Having observed Lauren’s emergence in the industry, he added, “What really interested me in him is: His reference points in his collection are very similar to our reference points.”
Fond of whimsical details, such as inserting a red whipstitch on a denim jacket as it’s being slipped into a box for shipping, Lauren recalled that his initial response to the CFDA’s proposition from Banana Republic was: “Wow — that’s interesting. Are you sure they really want to work with me?”
Banana Republic did. Hoping to reverse a 10 percent drop in
